RESUMO

Black TiO2 formed by introducing lattice disorder into pristine TiO2 has a narrowed band gap and suppresses the recombination of charge carriers. This provides a potential strategy for visible light photocatalysis. However, the microstructural design of black TiO2 for a higher optimization of visible light is still in high demand. In this work, we proposed the preparation of black TiO2 hollow shells with controllable cavity diameters using silica spheres as templates for the cavities and the NaBH4 reduction method. The decreased cavity size resulted in a hollow shell with an enhanced visible-light absorption and improved photocatalytic performance. Moreover, we demonstrated that this cavity can be combined with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to form AuNPs@black TiO2 yolk-shells. The AuNPs provided additional visible light absorption and promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers in the yolk-shell structures. This further improved the photocatalysis, the degradation rate of Cr(VI) can reach 0.066 min-1. Our work evaluated the effect of the cavity size on the photocatalytic performance of hollow and yolk-shell structures and provided concepts for the further enhancement of visible-light photocatalysis.

The Huitang duck (HT), a long-domesticated elite local breed from Hunan Province, China, with excellent meat quality, has not had its population genetic structure and genomic selective sweeps extensively studied to date. This study measured the phenotypic characteristics of HT and conducted comparative analysis between HT and 16 different duck breeds, including wild, indigenous, and meat breeds, to characterize its population structure and genetic potential. The results revealed that HT is a dual-purpose indigenous breed with a genetic background closely related to the Youxian sheldrake and Linwu ducks. In the selective sweep analysis between HT and Linwu ducks, genes such as PLCG2, FN1, and IGF2BP2, which are associated with muscle growth and development, were identified near the 27 selection signals. The comparison between HT and Jinding ducks revealed 68 selective signals that contained important genes associated with ovarian development (GRIK4, MAP3K8, and TGIF1) and egg-laying behaviors (ERBB4). Selective sweep analysis between HT and Youxian sheldrake ducks found 93 selective regions covering genes related to both meat (IGF1R and IGFBP5) and egg-production (FOXO3 and ITPR1) traits. Our study may provide novel knowledge for exploring the population structure and genetic potential of HT, offering a theoretical basis for its breeding strategies in the future.

Treatment of infected wounds remains a challenge owing to antibiotic resistance; thus, developing smart biomaterials for the healing of infected wounds is urgently needed. In this study, a microneedle (MN) patch system with antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties is developed to promote and accelerate infected wound healing. In the MN patch (termed PFG/M MNs), a nanoparticle with polydopamine (PDA)-loaded iron oxide is grafted with glucose oxidase (GOx) and hyaluronic acid (HA) and then integrated into the tips, and amine-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (AP-MSNs) are incorporated into the bases. Results show that PFG/M MNs eradicate bacterial infections and modulate the immune microenvironment, combining the advantages of chemodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and M2 macrophage polarization from Fe/PDA@GOx@HA in the tips as well as anti-inflammatory effect of AP-MSNs from the MN bases. Thus, the PFG/M MN system is a promising clinical candidate for promoting infected wound healing.

RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) radiation has attracted considerable attention in medical imaging owing to its nonionizing and spectral fingerprinting characteristics. To date, most studies have focused on in vitro and ex vivo objects with water-removing pretreatment because the water in vivo excessively absorbs the THz waves, which causes deterioration of the image quality. In this review, we discuss how THz medical imaging can be used for a living body. The development of imaging contrast agents has been particularly useful to this end. In addition, we also introduce progress in novel THz imaging methods that could be more suitable for in vivo applications. Based on our discussions, we chart a developmental roadmap to take THz medical imaging from in vitro to in vivo.

RESUMO

Black TiO2 has received tremendous attention because of its lattice disorder-induced reduction in the TiO2 bandgap, which yields excellent light absorption and photocatalytic ability. In this report, a highly efficient visible-light-driven black TiO2 photocatalyst was synthesized with a mesoporous hollow shell structure. It provided a higher specific surface area, more reaction sites and enhanced visible light absorption capability, which significantly promoted the photocatalytic reaction. Subsequently, the mesoporous hollow black TiO2 with different lattice disorder-engineering degrees were designed. The structure disorder in the black TiO2 obviously increased with reduction temperature, leading to improved visible light absorption. However, their visible-light-driven photocatalytic efficiency increased first and then decreased. The highest value can be observed for the sample reduced at 350 °C, which was 2-, 1.4- and 5-fold that of the samples reduced at 320 °C, 380 °C and 400 °C, respectively. This contradiction can be ascribed to the varied functions of the surface defects with different concentrations in the black TiO2 during the catalytic process. In particular, the defects at low concentrations boost photocatalysis but reverse photocatalysis at high concentrations when they act as charge recombination centers. This study provides significant insight for the fabrication of high-efficiency visible-light-driven catalytic black TiO2 and the understanding of its catalysis mechanism.
