RESUMO

Large-area single-crystal monolayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene1-3, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)4-6 and transition metal dichalcogenides7,8 have been grown. hBN is considered to be the 'ideal' dielectric for 2D-materials-based field-effect transistors (FETs), offering the potential for extending Moore's law9,10. Although hBN thicker than a monolayer is more desirable as substrate for 2D semiconductors11,12, highly uniform and single-crystal multilayer hBN growth has yet to be demonstrated. Here we report the epitaxial growth of wafer-scale single-crystal trilayer hBN by a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method. Uniformly aligned hBN islands are found to grow on single-crystal Ni (111) at early stage and finally to coalesce into a single-crystal film. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that a Ni23B6 interlayer is formed (during cooling) between the single-crystal hBN film and Ni substrate by boron dissolution in Ni. There are epitaxial relationships between hBN and Ni23B6 and between Ni23B6 and Ni. We also find that the hBN film acts as a protective layer that remains intact during catalytic evolution of hydrogen, suggesting continuous single-crystal hBN. This hBN transferred onto the SiO2 (300 nm)/Si wafer acts as a dielectric layer to reduce electron doping from the SiO2 substrate in MoS2 FETs. Our results demonstrate high-quality single-crystal  multilayered hBN over large areas, which should open up new pathways for making it a ubiquitous substrate for 2D semiconductors.

RESUMO

As the dimensions of the semiconducting channels in field-effect transistors decrease, the contact resistance of the metal-semiconductor interface at the source and drain electrodes increases, dominating the performance of devices1-3. Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) have been demonstrated to be excellent semiconductors for ultrathin field-effect transistors4,5. However, unusually high contact resistance has been observed across the interface between the metal and the 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide3,5-9. Recent studies have shown that van der Waals contacts formed by transferred graphene10,11 and metals12 on few-layered transition-metal dichalcogenides produce good contact properties. However, van der Waals contacts between a three-dimensional metal and a monolayer 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide have yet to be demonstrated. Here we report the realization of ultraclean van der Waals contacts between 10-nanometre-thick indium metal capped with 100-nanometre-thick gold electrodes and monolayer MoS2. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging, we show that the indium and gold layers form a solid solution after annealing at 200 degrees Celsius and that the interface between the gold-capped indium and the MoS2 is atomically sharp with no detectable chemical interaction between the metal and the 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide, suggesting van-der-Waals-type bonding between the gold-capped indium and monolayer MoS2. The contact resistance of the indium/gold electrodes is 3,000 ± 300 ohm micrometres for monolayer MoS2 and 800 ± 200 ohm micrometres for few-layered MoS2. These values are among the lowest observed for three-dimensional metal electrodes evaporated onto MoS2, enabling high-performance field-effect transistors with a mobility of 167 ± 20 square centimetres per volt per second. We also demonstrate a low contact resistance of 220 ± 50 ohm micrometres on ultrathin niobium disulfide (NbS2) and near-ideal band offsets, indicative of defect-free interfaces, in tungsten disulfide (WS2) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2) contacted with indium alloy. Our work provides a simple method of making ultraclean van der Waals contacts using standard laboratory technology on monolayer 2D semiconductors.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to draw consensus among an expert panel regarding essential elements of an accessible fitness center guide for people with intellectual disabilities that will enable them to engage in physical activity fully and effectively. The study was situated in the socioecological model of disability. Researchers drew expert consensus regarding the essential features of accessible guides in fitness environments. A three-round Delphi procedure was used, involving repeated circulation of the questionnaire to an expert panel (N = 33). The panel was asked to rate the importance and adequacy of 66 items regarding the accessible fitness guide. A consensus was reached regarding 43 items after three rounds. The items include 7 body-weight exercises, 2 machine exercises, 12 environment-related items, 15 exercise preparations, 4 social etiquettes, and 3 emergencies.

RESUMO

Alternative splicing of RNA transcripts plays an important role in cancer development and progression. Recent advances in RNA-seq technology have made it possible to identify alternately spliced events in various types of cancer; however, research on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still limited. Here, by performing RNA-seq profiling of HCC transcripts at isoform level, we identified tumor-specific and molecular subtype-dependent expression of the USO1 isoforms, which we designated as a normal form USO1-N (XM_001290049) and a tumor form USO1-T (NM_003715). The expression of USO1-T, but not USO1-N, was associated with worse prognostic outcomes of HCC patients. We confirmed that the expression of USO1-T promoted an aggressive phenotype of HCC, both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, structural modeling analyses revealed that USO1-T lacks an ARM10 loop encoded by exon 15, which may weaken the dimerization of USO1 and its tethering to GM130. We demonstrated that USO1-T ensured unstacking of the Golgi and accelerated the vesicles trafficking from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to Golgi and plasma membrane in multiple liver cancer cells. ERK and GRASP65 were found to be involved in the USO1-T-mediated Golgi dysfunction. Conclusively, we provide new mechanophysical insights into the USO1 isoforms that differentially regulate the ER-Golgi network, promoting the heterogeneous HCC progression.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) play critical roles in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. Here, by performing RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) profiling, we sought to identify novel ncRNAs that potentially drive the heterogeneous progression of liver cancers. METHODS: RNA-Seq profiles were obtained from 68 HCC specimens and 10 samples of adjacent non-tumour liver tissues. The functional significance of the potential driver ncRNAs was evaluated by cell experiments. RESULTS: TPRG1-AS1 was identified as a potential driver noncoding RNA that promotes heterogeneous liver cancer progression. TPRG1-AS1 induced tumour suppressor RNA-binding motif protein 24 (RBM24), suppressing tumour growth by activating apoptotic tumour cell death. In addition, we report that TPRG1-AS1 acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) for RBM24, sponging miR-4691-5p and miR-3659 to interfere with their binding to RBM24. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that TPRG1-AS1 is a novel ceRNA sponging miR-4691-5p and miR-3659, resulting in RBM24 expression and suppression of liver cancer growth. Our results provide new insights into the functions of ncRNAs in heterogeneous HCC progression.

RESUMO

In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of mixed phase Nb1+xS2 nanoflakes prepared by chemical vapor deposition. The as-grown samples show a high density of flakes (thickness ∼50 nm) that form a continuous film. Raman and X-ray diffraction data show that the samples consist of both 2H and 3R phases, with the 2H phase containing a high concentration of Nb interstitials. These Nb interstitials sit in between the NbS2 layers to form Nb1+xS2. Cross-sectional Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy analysis with transmission electron microscopy suggests that the 2H Nb1+xS2 region is found in thinner flakes, while 3R NbS2 is observed in thicker regions of the films. The evolution of the phase from 2H Nb1+xS2 to 3R NbS2 may be attributed to the change of the growth environment from Nb-rich at the start of the growth to sulfur-rich at the latter stage. It was also found that the incorporation of Nb interstitials is highly dependent on the temperature of the NbCl5 precursor and the position of the substrate in the furnace. Samples grown at high NbCl5 temperature and with substrate located closer to the NbCl5 source show higher incorporation of Nb interstitials. Electrical measurements show linear I-V characteristics, indicating the metallic nature of the Nb1+xS2 film with relatively low resistivity of 4.1 × 10-3Ω cm.

RESUMO

Metallic transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)1-8 are good catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The overpotential and Tafel slope values of metallic phases and edges9 of two-dimensional (2D) TMDs approach those of Pt. However, the overall current density of 2D TMD catalysts remains orders of magnitude lower (~10-100 mA cm-2) than industrial Pt and Ir electrolysers (>1,000 mA cm-2)10,11. Here, we report the synthesis of the metallic 2H phase of niobium disulfide with additional niobium (2H Nb1+xS2, where x is ~0.35)12 as a HER catalyst with current densities of >5,000 mA cm-2 at ~420 mV versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. We find the exchange current density at 0 V for 2H Nb1.35S2 to be ~0.8 mA cm-2, corresponding to a turnover frequency of ~0.2 s-1. We demonstrate an electrolyser based on a 2H Nb1+xS2 cathode that can generate current densities of 1,000 mA cm-2. Our theoretical results reveal that 2H Nb1+xS2 with Nb-terminated surface has free energy for hydrogen adsorption that is close to thermoneutral, facilitating HER. Therefore, 2H Nb1+xS2 could be a viable catalyst for practical electrolysers.

RESUMO

Electrons commonly couple through Fröhlich interactions with longitudinal optical phonons to form polarons. However, trions possess a finite angular momentum and should therefore couple instead to rotational optical phonons. This creates a polaronic trion whose binding energy is determined by the crystallographic orientation of the lattice. Here, we demonstrate theoretically within the Fröhlich approach and experimentally by photoluminescence emission that the bare trion binding energy (20 meV) is significantly enhanced by the phonons at the interface between the two-dimensional semiconductor MoS_{2} and the bulk transition metal oxide SrTiO_{3}. The low-temperature binding energy changes from 60 meV in [001]-oriented substrates to 90 meV for [111] orientation, as a result of the counterintuitive interplay between the rotational axis of the MoS_{2} trion and that of the SrTiO_{3} phonon mode.

RESUMO

Synthetically valuable chiral (aziridin-2-yl)oxirane-3-carbaldehydes bearing three consecutive functional groups including aziridine, epoxide, and aldehyde were prepared from the stereoselective epoxidation of (aziridin-2-yl)acrylaldehydes with H2 O2 using organocatalyst (2R)- or (2S)-[diphenyl(trimethylsilyloxy)methyl]pyrrolidine as organocatalyst. The regioselective ring opening of aziridines and epoxides enabled us to achieve the highly efficient asymmetric synthesis of the antibiotic edeine D fragment 3-hydroxy-4,5-diaminopenatanoic acid, an intermediate for the formal synthesis of non-proteinogenic amino acid (-)-galantinic acid, and for potent antifungal agent (+)-preussin, and the medicinally important framework 3-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethylpyrrolidine.

RESUMO

Graphene oxide (GO) can be considered as one of the most visible outcomes of graphene research in terms of large scale production and commercialization prospects. Although GO can be easily prepared by oxidation-exfoliation of graphite in agitated solutions, the size of these sheets is generally limited due to fragmentation along fault lines during chemical oxidation and exfoliation in agitated solutions. In this account, we discuss recent strategies which have been developed for the preparation of large sized graphene oxide (LGO) sheets with lateral sizes >10 µm, using chemically expanded graphite as the starting material. LGO has a much lower density of defects than GO prepared using the conventional Hummers' method and can be readily transformed into graphene by chemical reduction. In addition, the unique advantages of using LGO sheets as a performance enhancer are discussed. Finally, this review also discusses recent advances in the chemical and electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide.

RESUMO

The excellent catalytic activity of metallic MoS2 edges for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has led to substantial efforts towards increasing the edge concentration. The 2H basal plane is less active for the HER because it is less conducting and therefore possesses less efficient charge transfer kinetics. Here we show that the activity of the 2H basal planes of monolayer MoS2 nanosheets can be made comparable to state-of-the-art catalytic properties of metallic edges and the 1T phase by improving the electrical coupling between the substrate and the catalyst so that electron injection from the electrode and transport to the catalyst active site is facilitated. Phase-engineered low-resistance contacts on monolayer 2H-phase MoS2 basal plane lead to higher efficiency of charge injection in the nanosheets so that its intrinsic activity towards the HER can be measured. We demonstrate that onset potentials and Tafel slopes of ∼-0.1 V and ∼50 mV per decade can be achieved from 2H-phase catalysts where only the basal plane is exposed. We show that efficient charge injection and the presence of naturally occurring sulfur vacancies are responsible for the observed increase in catalytic activity of the 2H basal plane. Our results provide new insights into the role of contact resistance and charge transport on the performance of two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheet catalysts for the HER.

RESUMO

This investigation was under taken to explore probable mechanisms and signal pathways involved in cytotoxicity induced by bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Herein, we selected muscle precursor C2C12 myoblasts as representative cells to test effect of calpain inhibitor 3-(4-iodophenyl)-2-mercapto-(Z)-2-propenoic acid (PD150606) on LPS induced inflammation and apoptosis. In order to rule out the toxicity of endotoxin, mouse myoblasts were exposed to various concentrations of LPS and viability of cells and morphology were assessed using CCK-8 assay and simple microscopy respectively. Apoptotic cell death was examined by fluorescence microscope at regular time intervals. Additionally, LPS induced apoptosis in C2C12 cells were determined by mRNA expression of µ-calpain, caspase-3 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and were quantified by qRT-PCR. Our results point out that LPS stimulation produced dose dependent toxicity in muscle precursor cells. Pre-treatment with a calpain inhibitor can significantly attenuate LPS-induced inflammation/apoptosis. Results of present research determined that mRNA expression of aforesaid genes was amplified (p<0.05) in LPS stimulated C2C12 cells, whereas a noticeable drop off in mRNA expression of these genes was observed when pre-exposed with calpain inhibitor PD150606. Our study has outlined the current understanding regarding the connection between µ-calpain and caspase-3 in skeletal muscle wasting and as a result provides suitable choice for designing promising chemotherapeutic system for muscle illness and atrophy.

RESUMO

To prevent the development and spread of spoilage/pathogenic microorganisms via meat foodstuffs, antimicrobial nanocomposite packaging can serve as a potential alternative. The objective of this study was to develop a new class of antimicrobial hybrid packaging mat composed of biodegradable polyurethane supplemented with virgin olive oil and zinc oxide via electrospinning. Instead of mixing antimicrobial compounds directly with food, incorporation in packaging materials allows the functional effect at food surfaces where microbial activity is localized. The nanofibers were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD and TEM. The antibacterial activity was tested against two common foodborne pathogens viz., Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium. The present results indicated that incorporation of olive oil in the polymer affected morphology of PU nanofibers and nanocomposite packaging were able to inhibit growth of pathogens. Thus; as-spun mat can be used as prospective antimicrobial packaging, which potentially reduces contamination of meat/meat-products. Moreover, introduced biodegradable packaging for meat products could serve to replace PVC films and simultaneously help to protect natural environment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a common condition and frequently can be annoying to affected individuals. We investigated the prevalence and associated factors for tinnitus in South Korea using the data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) during 2009-2011. METHODS: KNHANES is a cross-sectional survey of the civilian, non-institutionalized population of South Korea (n = 21 893). A field survey team that included an otolaryngologist moved with a mobile examination unit and performed interviews and physical examinations. RESULTS: Among the population over 12 years of age, the prevalence of any tinnitus was 19.7% (95% CI 18.8%-20.6%). Tinnitus was more prevalent in women, and the prevalence rate increased with age (P < 0.001). Among those with any tinnitus, 29.3% (95% CI 27.3%-31.3%) experienced annoying tinnitus that affected daily life. Annoying tinnitus also increased with age (P < 0.001), but no sex difference was demonstrated (P = 0.25). In participants aged 40 years or older, age, quality of life, depressive mood, hearing loss, feeling of dizziness, and rhinitis were associated with any tinnitus (P < 0.05). Age, hearing loss, history of cardiovascular disease, and stress were associated with annoying tinnitus (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Tinnitus is a common condition, and a large population suffers from annoying tinnitus in South Korea. Public understanding of associated factors might contribute to better management of tinnitus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effective age of retirement in South Korea is higher than the average of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Early retirement in Asia may affect mental health differently compared to western countries. Thus, we examined the association between retirement age and depressive symptoms among South Korean retirees. METHODS: We used data from the 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 Korean Retirement and Income Panel Study, including a total of 2998, 3152, 3203, 3154, and 3055 participants, respectively. We excluded those younger than 50 years, non-retirees, those without information on the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale, and those with other missing values. We used a generalized estimating equation model to identify the association between retirement age and depressive symptoms measured using the CES-D. RESULTS: Participants who retired at age < 50 years had significantly higher CES-D scores (ß = 1.764, P = 0.0003) compared to those who retired at age ≥ 70 years. The negative effects of early retirement on depressive symptoms were greater among male participants, heads of households, young involuntary retirees, those who retired within the past 20 years, and those who had no difficulties in activities of daily living. LIMITATIONS: Since we evaluated the association between retirement age and depressive symptoms in one direction, there is a possibility of reverse causality. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of managing depressive symptoms in early retirees, especially young involuntary retirees and those burdened with family care.

RESUMO

Supporting materials for electrocatalysts must exhibit relative chemical inertness to facilitate unimpeded movement of gas, and demonstrate electrical conductivity to promote efficient electron transfer to the catalyst. Conventional catalyst electrodes, such as glassy carbon, carbon cloths, or Ni foam, are commonly employed. However, the challenge lies in the limited stability observed during testing due to the relatively weak adhesion between the catalyst and the electrode. Addressing this limitation is crucial for advancing the stability and performance of catalyst-electrode systems in various applications. Here, we suggest a novel fabrication method for a freestanding conducting film, accomplished through gelation, incorporating 1T-MoS2 and graphene oxide. 1T-MoS2 nanosheets play a crucial role in promoting the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) on the Zn foil. This contribution leads to accelerated film formation and enhanced electrical conductivity in the film. The synergistic effect also enhances the film's stability as catalyst supports. This study provides insights into the effective utilization of MoS2 and graphene oxide in the creating of advanced catalyst support systems with potential applications in diverse catalytic reaction.

RESUMO

With the exploding interest in transition metal chalcogenides, sulfide minerals containing the dianion S2(2-), such as pyrite (FeS2), cattierite (CoS2), and vaesite (NiS2), have recently attracted much attention for potential applications in energy conversion and storage devices. However, the synthesis of the patronite structure (VS4, V(4+)(S2(2-))2) and its applications have not yet been clearly demonstrated because of experimental difficulties and the existence of nonstoichiometric phases. Herein, we report the synthesis of VS4 using a simple, facile hydrothermal method with a graphene oxide (GO) template and the characterization of the resulting material. Tests of various templates such as CNT, pyrene, perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA), and graphite led us to the conclusion that the graphitic layer plays a role in the nucleation during growth of VS4. Furthermore, the VS4/rGO hybrid was proved to be a promising functional material in energy storage devices.
