RESUMO

With the rapid development of performance and long-term stability, bismuth vanadate (BiVO4 ) has emerged as the preferred photoanode in photoelectrochemical tandem devices. Although state-of-the-art BiVO4 photoanodes realize a saturated photocurrent density approaching the theoretical maximum, the fill factor (FF) is still inferior, pulling down the half-cell applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (HC-ABPE). Among the major fundamental limitations are the Fermi level pinning and sluggish surface kinetics at the low applied potentials. This work demonstrates that the plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition technique is capable of addressing these issues by seamlessly installing an angstrom-scale FeNi-layer between BiVO4 and electrolyte. Not only this ultrathin FeNi layer serves as an efficient OER cocatalyst, more importantly, it also effectively passivates the surface states of BiVO4 , de-pins the surface Fermi level, and enlarges the built-in voltage, allowing the photoanode to make optimal use of the photogenerated holes for achieving high FF up to 44% and HC-ABPE to 2.2%. This study offers a new approach for enhancing the FF of photoanodes and provides guidelines for designing efficient unassisted solar fuel devices.

RESUMO

Carbon-based CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells without hole transporter (C-PSCs) have achieved intense attention due to its simple device structure and high chemical stability. However, the severe interface energy loss at the CsPbI3/carbon interface, attributed to the lower hole selectivity for inefficient charge separation, greatly limits device performance. Hence, dipole electric field (DEF) is deployed at the above interface to address the above issue by using a pole molecule, 4-trifluoromethyl-Phenylammonium iodide (CF3-PAI), in which the ─NH3 group anchors on the perovskite surface and the ─CF3 group extends away from it and connects with carbon electrode. The DEF is proven to align with the built-in electric field, that is pointing toward carbon electrode, which well enhances hole selectivity and charge separation at the interface. Besides, CF3-PAI molecules also serve as defect passivator for reducing trap state density, which further suppresses defect-induced non-radiative recombination. Consequently, the CsPbI3 C-PSCs achieve an excellent efficiency of 18.33% with a high VOC of 1.144 V for inorganic C-PSCs without hole transporter.

RESUMO

Nanostructured bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is at the forefront of emerging photoanodes in photoelectrochemical tandem devices for solar water splitting owing to the suitable band edge position and efficient charge separation capability. However, the (photo)chemical corrosion involving V5+ dissolution limits the long-term stability of BiVO4. Herein, guided by DFT calculations, we introduce an ALD-derived NiOx catalyst layer on BiVO4 to stabilize the surface Bi-O bonds, facilitate hole extraction, and thus suppress the V5+ dissolution. At the same time, the ALD NiOx catalyst layer could efficiently suppress the surface recombination and accelerate the surface OER kinetics, boosting the half-cell applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of BiVO4 to 2.05%, as well as a fill factor of 47.1%. By adding trace NaVO3 to the electrolyte, the NiOx/BiVO4 photoanode with an illumination area of 10.5 cm2 shows a record operational stability of more than 2100 h.

RESUMO

Zeolite microspheres have been successfully applied in commercial-scale separators such as oxygen concentrators. However, further enhancement of their applications is hampered by the post-synthetic shaping process that formulates the zeolite powder into packing-sized spherical bodies with various binders leading to active site blockage and suboptimal performance. Herein, binderless zeolite microspheres with a tunable broad size range from 2 µm to 500 µm have been developed with high crystallinity, sphericity over 92%, monodispersity with a coefficient of variation (CV) less than 5%, and hierarchical pore architecture. Combining precursor impregnation and steam-assisted crystallization (SAC), mesoporous silica microspheres with a wide size range could be successfully transformed into zeolite. For preserved size and spherical morphology, a judicious selection of the synthesis conditions is crucial to ensure a pure phase, high crystallinity, and hierarchical architecture. For the sub-2-µm zeolite microsphere, low-temperature prolonged aging was important so as to suppress external zeolization that led to a large, single macroporous crystal. For the large 500 µm sphere, ultrasound pretreatment and vacuum impregnation were crucial and facilitated spatially uniform gel matrix dispersion and homogenous crystallization. The obtained zeolite 5A microspheres exhibited excellent air separation performance, while the 4A microspheres displayed ammonium removal capabilities. This work provides a general strategy to overcome the existing limitations in fabricating binder-free technical bodies of zeolites for various applications.

RESUMO

Tin halide perovskites (THPs) have demonstrated exceptional potential for various applications owing to their low toxicity and excellent optoelectronic properties. However, the crystallization kinetics of THPs are less controllable than its lead counterpart because of the higher Lewis acidity of Sn2+, leading to THP films with poor morphology and rampant defects. Here, a colloidal zeta potential modulation approach is developed to improve the crystallization kinetics of THP films inspired by the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. After adding 3-aminopyrrolidine dihydro iodate (APDI2) in the precursor solution to change the zeta potential of the pristine colloids, the total interaction potential energy between colloidal particles with APDI2 could be controllably reduced, resulting in a higher coagulation probability and a lower critical nuclei concentration. In situ laser light scattering measurements confirmed the increased nucleation rate of the THP colloids with APDI2. The resulting film with APDI2 shows a pinhole-free morphology with fewer defects, achieving an impressive efficiency of 15.13 %.

RESUMO

Non-noble metal catalysts for promoting the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential to efficient water splitting for sustainable hydrogen production. Birnessite has a local atomic structure similar to that of an oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II, while the catalytic activity of birnessite is far from satisfactory. Herein, we report a novel Fe-Birnessite (Fe-Bir) catalyst obtained by controlled Fe(III) intercalation- and docking-induced layer reconstruction. The reconstruction dramatically lowers the OER overpotential to 240 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and the Tafel slope to 33 mV/dec, making Fe-Bir the best of all the reported Bir-based catalysts, even on par with the best transition-metal-based OER catalysts. Experimental characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations elucidate that the catalyst features active Fe(III)-O-Mn(III) centers interfaced with ordered water molecules between neighboring layers, which lower reorganization energy and accelerate electron transfer. DFT calculations and kinetic measurements show non-concerted PCET steps conforming to a new OER mechanism, wherein the neighboring Fe(III) and Mn(III) synergistically co-adsorb OH* and O* intermediates with a substantially reduced O-O coupling activation energy. This work highlights the importance of elaborately engineering the confined interlayer environment of birnessite and more generally, layered materials, for efficient energy conversion catalysis.

RESUMO

Pristine fullerene C60 is an excellent electron transport material for state-of-the-art inverted structure perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but its low solubility leaves thermal evaporation as the only method for depositing it into a high-quality electron transport layer (ETL). To address this problem, we herein introduce a highly soluble bowl-shaped additive, corannulene, to assist in C60 -assembly into a smooth and compact film through the favorable bowl-ball interaction. Our results show that not only corannulene can dramatically enhance the film formability of C60 , it also plays a critical role in forming C60 -corannulene (CC) supramolecular species and in boosting intermolecular electron transport dynamics in the ETL. This strategy has allowed CC devices to deliver high power conversion efficiencies up to 21.69 %, which is the highest value among the PSCs based on the solution-processed-C60 (SP-C60 ) ETL. Moreover, the stability of the CC device is far superior to that of the C60 -only device because corannulene can retard and curb the spontaneous aggregation of C60 . This work establishes the bowl-assisted ball assembly strategy for developing low-cost and efficient SP-C60 ETLs with high promise for fully-SP PSCs.

RESUMO

Despite their multifaceted advantages, inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still suffer from lower power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) than their regular counterparts, which is largely due to recombination energy losses (Eloss) that arise from the chemical, physical, and energy level mismatches, especially at the interfaces between perovskites and fullerene electron transport layers (ETLs). To address this problem, we herein introduce an aminium iodide derivative of a buckybowl (aminocorannulene) that is molecularly layered at the perovskite-ETL interface. Strikingly, besides passivating the PbI2-rich perovskite surface, the aminocorannulene enforces a vertical dipole and enhances the surface n-type character that is more compatible with the ETL, thus boosting the electron extraction and transport dynamics and suppressing interfacial Eloss. As a result, the champion PSC achieves an excellent PCE of over 22%, which is superior compared to that of the control device (∼20%). Furthermore, the device stability is significantly enhanced, owing to a lock-and-key-like grip on the mobile iodides by the buckybowls and the resultant increase of the interfacial ion-migration barrier. This work highlights the potential of buckybowls for the multifunctional surface engineering of perovskite toward high-performance and stable PSCs.

RESUMO

Transistor-based memories are of particular significance in the pursuit of next-generation nonvolatile memories. The charge storage medium in a transistor-based memory is pivotal to the device performance. In this report, nitrogen doping titania nanocrystals (N-TiO2 NCs) synthesized through a low-temperature nonhydrolytic method are used as the charge storage medium in a graphene transistor-based memory. The decoration of the N-TiO2 NCs enables the device to perform as an ultraviolet (UV) light-programmable nonvolatile optoelectronic memory. Multilevel nonvolatile information recording can be realized through accurate control of the incident light dose, which is ascribed to the vast and firm hole trapping abilities of the N-TiO2 NCs induced by the N dopant. Accordingly, a positive gate voltage can be used to erase the programmed state by promoting the recombination of stored holes in N-TiO2 NCs. This study manifests the importance of trap engineering for information storage and provides an alternative path toward nonvolatile optoelectronic memory.

RESUMO

Developing a reliable strategy for the modulation of the texture, composition, and electronic structure of electrocatalyst surfaces is crucial for electrocatalytic performance, yet still challenging. Herein, we develop a facile and universal strategy, quenching, to precisely tailor the surface chemistry of metal oxide nanocatalysts by rapidly cooling them in a salt solution. Taking NiMoO4 nanocatalysts an example, we successfully produce the quenched nanocatalysts offering a greatly reduced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential by 85 mV and 135 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2 respectively. Through detailed characterization studies, we establish that quenching induces the formation of numerous disordered stepped surfaces and the near-surface metal ions doping, thus regulating the local electronic structures and coordination environments of Ni, Mo, which promotes the formation of the dual-site active and thereby affords a low energy pathway for OER. This quenching strategy is also successfully applied to a number of other metal oxides, such as spinel-type Co3O4, Fe2O3, LaMnO3, and CoSnO3, with similar surface modifications and gains in OER activity. Our finding provides a new inspiration to activate metal oxide catalysts and extends the use of quenching chemistry in catalysis.

RESUMO

Recent years have witnessed an upsurge in the development of non-precious catalysts (NPCs) for alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), especially with the strides made in experimental and computational techniques. In this contribution, the most recent advances in NPCs for AWE were systematically reviewed, emphasizing the application of in situ/operando experimental methods and density functional theory (DFT) calculations in their understanding and development. First, we briefly introduced the fundamentals of the anode and cathode reaction for AWE, i.e., the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Next, the most popular in situ/operando approaches for characterizing AWE catalysts, including hard and soft XAS, ambient-pressure XPS, liquid and identical location TEM, electrochemical mass spectrometry, and Raman spectroscopy were thoroughly summarized. Subsequently, we carefully discussed the principles, computational methods, applications, and combinations of DFT with machine learning for modeling NPCs and predicting the alkaline OER and HER. With the improved understanding of the structure-property-performance relationship of NPCs for AWE, we proceeded to overview their current development, summarising state-of-the-art design strategies to boost their activity. In addition, advances in various extensively investigated NPCs for AWE were evaluated. By conveying these methods, progress, insights, and perspectives, this review will contribute to a better understanding and rational development of non-precious AWE electrocatalysts for hydrogen production.

RESUMO

Efficient noble-metal free electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for large-scale hydrogen production via water splitting. Inspired by Nature's oxygen evolution cluster in photosystem II and the highly efficient artificial OER catalyst of NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH), we designed an electrostatic 2D-2D assembly route and successfully synthesized a 2D LDH(+)-Birnessite(-) hybrid. The as-constructed LDH(+)-Birnessite(-) hybrid catalyst showed advanced catalytic activity and excellent stability towards OER under a close to industrial hydrogen production condition (85 °C and 6 M KOH) for more than 20 h at the current densities larger than 100 mA cm-2 . Experimentally, we found that besides the enlarged interlayer distance, the flexible interlayer NiFe LDH(+) also modulates the electronic structure of layered MnO2 , and creates an electric field between NiFe LDH(+) and Birnessite(-), wherein OER occurs with a greatly decreased overpotential. DFT calculations confirmed the interlayer LDH modulations of the OER process, attributable to the distinct electronic distributions and environments. Upshifting the Fe-3d orbitals in LDH promotes electron transfer from the layered MnO2 to LDH, significantly boosting up the OER performance. This work opens a new way to fabricate highly efficient OER catalyst for industrial water oxidation.

RESUMO

Tin halide perovskites are rising as promising materials for lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the crystallization rate of tin halide perovskites is much faster than the lead-based analogs, leading to more rampant trap states and lower efficiency. Here, we disclose a key finding to modulate the crystallization kinetics of FASnI3 through a non-classical nucleation mechanism based on pre-nucleation clusters (PNCs). By introducing piperazine dihydriodide to tune the colloidal chemistry of the FASnI3 perovskite precursor solution, stable clusters could be readily formed in the solution before nucleation. These pre-nucleation clusters act as intermediate phase and thus can reduce the energy barrier for the perovskite nucleation, resulting in a high-quality perovskite film with lower defect density. This PNCs-based method has led to a conspicuous photovoltaic performance improvement for FASnI3 -based PSCs, delivering an impressive efficiency of 11.39 % plus improved stability.

RESUMO

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have become a shining star in the photovoltaic field due to their spectacular increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 3.8 % to over 23 % in just few years, opening up the potential in addressing the important future energy and environment issues. The excellent photovoltaic performance can be attributed to the unique properties of the organometal halide perovskite materials, including high absorption coefficient, tunable bandgap, high defect tolerance, and excellent charge transport characteristics. The authors entered this field when pursuing research on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) by leveraging nanorods arrays for vectorial transport of the extracted electrons. Soon after, we and others realized that while the organometal halide perovskite materials have excellent intrinsic properties for solar cells, interface engineering is at least equally important in the development of high-performance PSCs, which includes surface defect passivation, band alignment, and heterojunction formation. Herein, we will address this topic by presenting the historical development and recent progress on the interface engineering of PSCs primarily of our own group. This review is mainly focused on the material and interface design of the conventional n-i-p, inverted p-i-n and carbon electrode-based structure devices from our own experience and perspective. Finally, the challenges and prospects of this area for future development will also be discussed.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the construction of heterojunction arrays for boosting solar water splitting by combining in situ guided growth of heterointerfaces and energy band tuning. By directly growing an ultrathin Fe2WO6 layer on a preformed WO3 nanosheet array in full coverage, a uniform and dense array of intimately contacted WO3/Fe2WO6 heterojunction was created. The heterojunction array shows not only a largely broadened visible light absorption range but also a built-in interface polarization to accelerate hole transfer from WO3 to Fe2WO6. Meanwhile, fine-tuning to match energy levels at the heterojunction was achieved by doping WO3 with Fe (Fe-WO3), leading to improved electrical conductivity and reduced charge recombination. Photoanodes based on such heterojunction arrays have shown significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance, clearly arising from the above-mentioned efforts. Furthermore, by decorating FeOOH/NiOOH cocatalysts on the heterojunction arrays in tandem, the surface water oxidation kinetics was considerably accelerated, and the resulting Fe-WO3/Fe2WO6/FeOOH/NiOOH photoanode achieved a photocurrent density of 2.78 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode. This work highlights the benefits of in situ construction of heterojunction arrays for enhancing the PEC performance.

RESUMO

A cocatalyst is normally deposited on a photoabsorbing semiconductor (PAS) for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but with drawbacks of limited loading, reduced light absorption, and tendency of charge recombination. To tackle these problems, a scheme of three-dimensional (3D) decoupling cocatalysts from the PAS with a pore-spanning crisscross conducting polymer host is proposed in this work. To demonstrate the concept, a facile method was developed for the in situ cogrowth of FeO x nanoparticles and conducting polymer (CP) network in various PAS with different microstructures such as a TiO2 nanorod array, WO3 nanosheet array, and planar TiO2 nanoparticle film, generating the bespoke photoanodes. The as-synthesized photoanodes exhibited a significantly enhanced PEC water splitting performance, which is clearly shown to arise from the improved light utilization, increased catalytic active sites, enhanced charge separation, and decreased electrochemical impedance of the photoelectrode. This 3D decoupling strategy is expected to open a promising direction for designing efficient PEC cells.

RESUMO

Lead halide perovskites with mixed cations/anions often suffer from phase segregation, which is detrimental to device efficiency and their long-term stability. During perovskite film growth, the gel stage (in between liquid and crystalline) correlates to phase segregation, which has been rarely explored. Herein, cation diffusion kinetics are systematically investigated at the gel stage to develop a diffusion model obeying Fick's second law. Taking 2D layered perovskite as an example, theoretical and experimental results reveal the impact of diffusion coefficient, temperature, and gel duration on the film growth and phase formation. A homogenous 2D perovskite thin film was then fabricated without significant phase segregation. This in-depth understanding of gel stage and relevant cation diffusion kinetics would further guide the design and processing of halide perovskites with mixed composition to meet requirements for optoelectronic applications.

RESUMO

As crystalline semiconductor nanowires are thinned down to a single-unit-cell thickness, many fascinating properties could arise pointing to promising applications in various fields. A grand challenge is to be able to controllably synthesize such ultrathin nanowires. Herein, we report a strategy, which synergizes a soft template with oriented attachment (ST-OA), to prepare high-quality single-unit-cell semiconductor nanowires (SSNWs). Using this protocol, we are able to synthesize for the first time ZnS and ZnSe nanowires (NWs) with only a single-unit-cell thickness (less than 1.0 nm) and a cluster-like absorption feature (i.e., with a sharp, strong, and significantly blue-shifted absorption peak). Particularly, the growth mechanism and the single-unit-cell structure of the as-prepared ZnS SSNWs are firmly established by both experimental observations and theoretical calculations. Thanks to falling into the extreme quantum confinement regime, these NWs are found to only absorb the light with wavelengths shorter than 280 nm (i.e., solar-blind UV absorption). Utilizing such a unique property, self-powered photoelectrochemical-type photodetectors (PEC PDs) based on the ZnS SSNWs are successfully fabricated. The PDs after interface modification with TiO2 exhibit an excellent solar-blind UV photoresponse performance, with a typical on/off ratio of 6008, a detectivity of 1.5 × 1012 Jones, and a responsivity of 33.7 mA/W. This work opens the door to synthesizing and investigating a new dimension of nanomaterials with a wide range of applications.

RESUMO

Despite the many attempts to build ultrathin 2D-2D heterojunctions via wet chemical methods, the resulting composite materials reported to date suffer from poor interfacial bonding and/or complexity of the synthetic protocols. Encouraged by the structural compatibility of Bi2WO6 and Bi2O2S, both of which are 2D semiconductors sharing a rather similar structural unit of a [Bi2O2]2+ slice in their crystal structures, we have successfully fabricated an ultrathin nanosheet with a tightly bonded 2D-2D heterojunction between the two components by facilely joining the [Bi2O2]2+ and [S]2- slices using a simple two-step hydrothermal method. Such a Bi2WO6-Bi2O2S 2D-2D heterojunction has a five-alternating-layer (Bi2O2S-Bi2WO6-Bi2O2S-Bi2WO6-Bi2O2S) sandwich structure and a thickness down to ca. 5 nm and was obtained by simply growing the Bi2O2S layer in situ on the surface of monolayer Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The judicious combination of Bi2WO6 and Bi2O2S through a 2D-2D heterojunction not only extended light absorption in the visible range but also significantly enhanced photo(electro)chemical water splitting efficiencies in comparison to the bare Bi2WO6 nanosheets alone due to the close-bonding-promoted interfacial charge separation. Our findings provide a viable methodology to build a host of nanomaterials with closely bonded 2D nanosheets, which can be used as photocatalysts and electrocatalysts, among others.

RESUMO

Constructing 3D nanophotonic structures is regarded as an effective means to realize both efficient light absorption and efficient charge separation. However, most of the 3D structures reported so far enhance light trapping beyond the absorption onset wavelength, and thus greatly attentuate or even completely block the long-wavelength light, which could otherwise be efficiently absorbed by narrow-bandgap materials in a Z-scheme or tandem device. In addition, constructing a 3D conductive substrate often involves complex processes causing increased cost and upscaling problems. To overcome these shortcomings, a novel 3D hematite nanorod@nanobowl array nanophotonic structure is designed and fabricated by a low-cost method. This unique structure can enhance light absorption with tunable cutoffs and rationally concentrate photons right above the bowl bottom, enabling efficient charge separation. By loading NiFeOx as a cocatalyst, a high photocurrent density of 3.41 ± 0.2 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) can be obtained, which is 2.35 times that with a planar structure in otherwise the same system.
