RESUMO

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have attracted a great deal of attention in the field of clean solar energy due to their advantages of transparency, flexibility, low cost and light weight. Introducing them to the market enables seamless integration into buildings and windows, while also supporting wearable, portable electronics and internet-of-things (IoT) devices. With the development of photovoltaic materials and the optimization of fabrication technology, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of OSCs have rapidly improved and now exceed 20%. However, there is a significant lack of focus on material stability and device lifetime, causing a severe hindrance to commercial applications. In this review, we carefully review important strategies employed to improve the stability of OSCs over the past three years from the perspectives of material design and device engineering. Furthermore, we analyze and discuss the current important progress in terms of air, light, thermal and mechanical stability. Finally, we propose the future research directions to overcome the challenges in achieving highly stable OSCs. We expect that this review will contribute to solving the stability problem of OSCs, eventually paving the way for commercial applications in the near future.

RESUMO

Targeted treatment of the interface between electron transport layers (ETL) and perovskite layers is highly desirable for achieving passivating effects and suppressing carrier nonradiative recombination, leading to high performance and long-term stability in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, a series of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs, Y-H, Y-F, and Y-Cl) are introduced to optimize the properties of the perovskite/ETL interface. This optimization involves passivating Pb2+ defects, releasing stress, and modulating carrier dynamics through interactions with the perovskite. Remarkably, after modifying with NFAs, the absorption range of perovskite films into the near-infrared region is extended. As expected, Y-F, with the largest electrostatic potential, facilitates the strongest interaction between the perovskite and its functional groups. Consequently, champion power conversion efficiencies of 21.17%, 22.21%, 23.25%, and 22.31% are achieved for control, Y-H-, Y-F-, and Y-Cl-based FA0.88Cs0.12PbI2.64Br0.36 (FACs) devices, respectively. This treatment also enhances the heat stability and air stability of the corresponding devices. Additionally, these modifier layers are applied to enhance the efficiency of Cs0.05(FA0.95MA0.05)0.95PbI2.64Br0.36 (FAMA) devices. Notably, a champion PCE exceeding 24% is achieved in the Y-F-based FAMA device. Therefore, this study provides a facile and effective approach to target the interface, thereby improving the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

RESUMO

Nonradiative recombination losses occurring at the interface pose a significant obstacle to achieve high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly in inverted PSCs. Passivating surface defects using molecules with different functional groups represents one of the key strategies for enhancing PSCs efficiency. However, a lack of insight into the passivation orientation of molecules on the surface is a challenge for rational molecular design. In this study, aminothiol hydrochlorides with different alkyl chains but identical electron-donating (-SH) and electron-withdrawing (-NH3 +) groups were employed to investigate the interplay between molecular structure, orientation, and interaction on perovskite surface. The 2-Aminoethane-1-thiol hydrochloride with shorter alkyl chains exhibited a preference of parallel orientations, which facilitating stronger interactions with the surface defects through strong coordination and hydrogen bonding. The resultant perovskite films following defect passivation demonstrate reduced ion migration, inhibition of nonradiative recombination, and more n-type characteristics for efficient electron transfer. Consequently, an impressive power conversion efficiency of 25 % was achieved, maintaining 95 % of its initial efficiency after 500 hours of continuous maximum power point tracking.

RESUMO

The hole-transporting material (HTM), poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT : PSS), is the most widely used material in the realization of high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the stability of PEDOT : PSS-based OSCs is quite poor, arising from its strong acidity and hygroscopicity. In addition, PEDOT : PSS has an absorption in the infrared region and high highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level, thus limiting the enhancement of short-circuit current density (Jsc) and open-circuit voltage (Voc), respectively. Herein, two asymmetric self-assembled molecules (SAMs), namely BrCz and BrBACz, were designed and synthesized as HTM in binary OSCs based on the well-known system of PM6 : Y6, PM6 : eC9, PM6 : L8-BO, and D18 : eC9. Compared with BrCz, BrBACz shows larger dipole moment, deeper work function and lower surface energy. Moreover, BrBACz not only enhances photon harvesting in the active layer, but also minimizes voltage losses as well as improves interface charge extraction/ transport. Consequently, the PM6 : eC9-based binary OSC using BrBACz as HTM exhibits a champion efficiency of 19.70 % with a remarkable Jsc of 29.20 mA cm-2 and a Voc of 0.856 V, which is a record efficiency for binary OSCs so far. In addition, the unencapsulated device maintains 95.0 % of its original efficiency after 1,000 hours of storage at air ambient, indicating excellent long-term stability.

RESUMO

The main obstacles to promoting the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) include their record power conversion efficiency (PCE), which still remains below the Shockley-Queisser limit, and poor long-term stability, attributable to crystallographic defects in perovskite films and open-circuit voltage (Voc) loss in devices. In this study, potassium (4-tert-butoxycarbonylpiperazin-1-yl) methyl trifluoroborate (PTFBK) was employed as a multifunctional additive to target and modulate bulk perovskite defects and carrier dynamics of PSCs. Apart from simultaneously passivating anionic and cationic defects, PTFBK could also optimize the energy-level alignment of devices and weaken the interaction between carriers and longitudinal optical phonons, resulting in a carrier lifetime of greater than 3 µs. Furthermore, it inhibited non-radiative recombination and improved the crystallization capacity in the target perovskite film. Hence, the target rigid and flexible p-i-n PSCs yielded champion PCEs of 24.99 % and 23.48 %, respectively. More importantly, due to hydrogen bonding between formamidinium and fluorine, the target devices exhibited remarkable thermal, humidity, and operational tracking at maximum power point stabilities. The reduced Young's modulus and residual stress in the perovskite layer also provided excellent bending stability for flexible target devices.

RESUMO

The wearable application of flexible organic solar cells (f-OSCs) necessitates high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and mechanical robustness. However, photoactive films based on efficient non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) are typically brittle, leading to poor mechanical stability in devices. In this study, we achieved a remarkable PCE of 18.06 % in f-OSCs while maintaining ultrahigh mechanical robustness (with a crack-onset strain (COS) of higher than 11 %) by incorporating a linker dimerized acceptor (DOY-TVT). Compared to binary blends, ternary systems exhibit reduced non-radiative recombination, suppressed crystallization and diffusion of NF-SMAs, and improved load distribution across the chain networks, enabling the dissipation of the load energy. Thus, the ternary f-OSCs developed in this study achieved, high PCE and stability, surpassing binary OSCs. Moreover, the developed f-OSCs retained 97 % of the initial PCE even after 3000 bending cycles, indicating excellent mechanical stability (9.1 % higher than binary systems). Furthermore, the rigid device with inverted structure based on the optimal active layer exhibited a substantial increase in efficiency retention, with 89.6 % after 865 h at 85 °C and 93 % after more than 1300 h of shelf storage at 25 °C. These findings highlight the potential of the linker oligomer acceptor for realizing high-performing f-OSCs with ultrahigh mechanical robustness.

RESUMO

Despite the great progress of flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs), it still faces several challenges during the homogeneous fabrication of high-quality perovskite thin films, and overcoming the insufficient exciton dissociation. To the ends, we rationally design the ferroelectric two-dimensional (2D) perovskite based on pyridine heterocyclic ring as the organic interlayer. We uncover that incorporation of the ferroelectric 2D material into 3D perovskite induces an increased built-in electric field (BEF), which enhances the exciton dissociation efficiency in the device. Moreover, the 2D seeds could assist the 3D crystallization by forming more homogeneous and highly-oriented perovskite crystals. As a result, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 23 % has been achieved by the f-PSCs with outstanding ambient stability. Moreover, the piezo/ferroelectric 2D perovskite intrigues a decreased hole transport barriers at the ITO/perovskite interface under tensile stress, which opens new possibilities for developing highly-efficient f-PSCs.

RESUMO

Hinokitiol is a tropolone-related compound isolated from the heartwood of cupressaceous plants. It is known to exhibit various biological functions including antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities. In the study, we investigated the antitumor activities of hinokitiol against human osteosarcoma cells. The results revealed that hinokitiol treatment inhibited cell viability of human osteosarcoma U-2 OS and MG-63 cells in the MTT assay. Further study revealed that hinokitiol exposure caused cell cycle arrest at the S phase and a DNA damage response with the induction of γ-H2AX foci in both osteosarcoma cell lines. In U-2 OS cells with wild-type tumor suppressor p53, we found that hinokitiol exposure induced p53 expression and cellular senescence, and knockdown of p53 suppressed the senescence. However, in MG-63 cells with mutated p53, a high percentage of cells underwent apoptosis with cleaved-PARP expression and Annexin V staining after hinokitiol treatment. In addition, up-regulated autophagy was observed both in hinokitiol-exposed U-2 OS and MG-63 cells. As the autophagy was suppressed through the autophagy inhibitor chloroquine, hinokitiol-induced senescence in U-2 OS cells was significantly enhanced accompanying more abundant p53 expression. In MG-63 cells, co-treatment of chloroquine increased hinokitiol-induced apoptosis and decreased cell viability of the treated cells. Our data revealed that hinokitiol treatment could result in different cell responses, senescence or apoptosis in osteosarcoma cell lines, and suppression of autophagy could promote these effects. We hypothesize that the analysis of p53 status and co-administration of autophagy inhibitors might provide more precise and efficacious therapies in hinokitiol-related trials for treating osteosarcoma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE) after knee arthroscopy is extremely rare. If the embolism is not treated promptly, the patient may die. Bilateral pulmonary embolism with associated pulmonary infarct without concomitant deep vein thrombosis has never been reported following routine knee arthroscopy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old female patient with no other risk factors other than hypertension, obesity, varicose veins in the ipsilateral lower extremities and elevated triglyceride (TG) presented to our ward. She had experienced sudden chest tightness, polypnea and fainting after going to the bathroom the morning of the second postoperative day and received emergency medical attention. Colour ultrasonography of the extremities showed no deep vein thrombosis. Lung computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed multiple embolisms scattered in both pulmonary artery branches. Thus, emergency interventional thrombolysis therapy was performed, followed by postoperative symptomatic treatment with drugs with thrombolytic, anticoagulant and protective activities. One week later, lung CTA showed a significant improvement in the PEs compared with those in the previous examination. Since the aetiology of PE and no obvious symptoms were discerned, the patient was discharged. CONCLUSION: Although knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive and quick procedure, the risk factors for PE in the perioperative period should be considered and fully evaluated to enhance PE detection. Moreover, a timely diagnosis and effective treatment are important measures to prevent and cure PE after knee arthroscopy. Finally, clear guidelines regarding VTE thromboprophylaxis following knee arthroscopy in patients with a low risk of VTE development are needed.

RESUMO

In the fabrication of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the wettability, adsorbability, and compactness of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on conductive substrates have critical impacts on the quality of the perovskite films and the defects at the buried perovskite-substrate interface, which control the efficiency and stability of the devices. Herein, three bisphosphonate-anchored indolocarbazole (IDCz)-derived SAMs, IDCz-1, IDCz-2, and IDCz-3, are designed and synthesized by modulating the position of the two nitrogen atoms of the IDCz unit to improve the molecular dipole moments and strengthen the π-π interactions. Regulating the work functions (WF) of FTO electrodes through molecular dipole moments and energy levels, the perovskite band bends upwards with a small offset for ITO/IDCz-3/perovskite, thereby promoting hole extraction and blocking electrons. As a result, the inverted PSC employing IDCz-3 as hole-collecting layer exhibits a champion PCE of 25.15%, which is a record efficiency for the multipodal SAMs-based PSCs. Moreover, the unencapsulated device with IDCz-3 can be stored for at least 1800 h with little degradation in performance.

RESUMO

While significant advancements in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of α-FAPbI3perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been made, attaining controllable perovskite crystallization is still a considerable hurdle. This challenge stems from the initial formation of δ-FAPbI3, a more energetically stable phase than the desired black α-phase, during film deposition. This disrupts the heterogeneous nucleation of α-FAPbI3, causing the formation of mixed phases and defects. To this end, polarity engineering using molecular additives, specifically ((methyl-sulfonyl)phenyl)ethylamines (MSPEs) are introduced. The findings reveal that the interaction of PbI2-MSPEs-FAI intermediates is enhanced with the increased polarity of MSPEs, which in turn expedites the nucleation of α-FAPbI3. This leads to the development of high-quality α-FAPbI3 films, characterized by vertical crystal orientation and reduced residual stresses. Additionally, the increased dipole moment of MSPE at perovskite grain boundaries attenuates Coulomb attractions among charged defects and screens carrier capture process, thereby diminishing non-radiative recombination. Utilizing these mechanisms, PSCs treated with highly polar 2-(4-MSPE) achieve an impressive PCE of 25.2% in small-area devices and 20.5% in large-area perovskite solar modules (PSMs) with an active area of 70 cm2. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy in achieving controllable crystallization of α-FAPbI3, paving the way for scalable-production of high-efficiency PSMs.

RESUMO

The ternary strategy, in which one guest component is introduced into one host binary system, is considered to be one of the most effective ways to realize high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). To date, there is no efficient method to predict the effectiveness of guest components in ternary OSCs. Herein, three guest compositions (i.e., ANF-1, ANF-2 and ANF-3) with different electrostatic potential (ESP) are designed and synthesized by modulating the electron-withdrawing ability of the terminal groups through density functional theory simulations. The effects of the introduction of guest component into the host system (D18:N3) on the photovoltaic properties are investigated. The theoretical and experimental studies provide a key rule for guest acceptor in ternary OSCs to improve the open-circuit voltage, that is, the larger ESP difference between the guest and host acceptor, the stronger the intermolecular interactions and the higher the miscibility, which improves the luminescent efficiency of the blend film and the electroluminescence quantum yield (EQEEL) of the device by reducing the aggregation-caused-quenching, thereby effectively decreasing the non-radiative voltage loss of ternary OSCs. This work will greatly contribute to the development of highly efficient guest components, thereby promoting the rapid breakthrough of the 20% efficiency bottleneck for single-junction OSCs.

RESUMO

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a painful, vesicular, cutaneous eruption from reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV), which can lead to potentially debilitating complications. The lifetime risk of HZ is estimated to be 20%-30% in the general population, with an increased risk in the elderly and immunocompromised populations. The most effective strategy to prevent HZ and its complications is by vaccination. Two types of HZ vaccines, zoster vaccine live and recombinant zoster vaccine, have been approved for use. This guidance offers recommendations and suggestions for HZ vaccination in adults, aiming to reduce the disease burden of HZ and its complications. It is intended as a guide to first-line healthcare providers, but does not supersede clinical judgement when assessing risk and providing recommendations to individuals. The Working Group on Adult Immunization Practice was appointed by the Infectious Diseases Society of Taiwan (IDST) and recommendations were drafted after a full literature review, using the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. The recommendations were reviewed and revised by expert review panels during a series of consensus meetings and endorsed by the IDST, Taiwan Association of Family Medicine, the Taiwanese Dermatological Association, the Taiwan Oncology Society, the Taiwan Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, the Transplantation Society of Taiwan, the Taiwan AIDS Society, and the Taiwan College of Rheumatology. This guidance describes the epidemiology of HZ and provides recommendations for HZ vaccination in adults with varying levels of risk, differing history of previous VZV infection and past varicella or zoster vaccinations.

RESUMO

Perovskite films are susceptible to degradation during their service period due to their weak mechanical properties. Acylhydrazone-bonded waterborne polyurethane (Ab-WPU) was employed as dynamic covalent polymer engineering to develop self-healing perovskite solar cells (SHPSCs). Ab-WPU enhances the crystallinity of the perovskite film, passivates the defects of the perovskite film through functional groups, and demonstrates promising flexibility and mild temperature self-healing properties of SHPSCs. The champion efficiency of SHPSCs on rigid and flexible substrates reaches 24.2% and 21.27% respectively. The moisture and heat stability of devices were improved. After 1000 bending cycles, the Ab-WPU-modified flexible device can be restored to an efficiency of over 95% of its original efficiency by heating to 60 °C. This is because the dynamic acylhydrazone bond can be activated to repair perovskite film defects at a mild temperature of 60 °C as evidenced by in situ AFM studies. This strategy provides an effective pathway for dynamic self-healing materials in PSCs under operational conditions.

RESUMO

High power conversion efficiency (PCE) and mechanical robustness are key requirements for wearable applications of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, almost all highly efficient photoactive films comprising polymer donors (PD ) and small molecule acceptors (SMAs) are mechanically brittle. In this study, highly efficient (PCE = 17.91%) and mechanically robust (crack-onset strain [COS] = 11.7%) flexible OSCs are fabricated by incorporating a ductile oligomeric acceptor (DOA) into the PD :SMA system, representing the most flexible OSCs to date. The photophysical, mechanical, and photovoltaic properties of D18:N3 with different DOAs are characterized. By introducing DOA DOY-C4 with a longer flexible alkyl linker and lower polymerization, the D18:N3:DOY-C4-based flexible OSCs exhibit a significantly higher PCE (17.91%) and 50% higher COS (11.7%) than the D18:N3-based device (PCE = 17.06%, COS = 7.8%). The flexible OSCs based on D18:N3:DOY-C4 retain 98% of the initial PCE after 2000 consecutive bending cycles, showing greater mechanical stability than the reference device (maintaining 89% of initial PCE). After careful investigation, it is hypothesized that the enhancement in mechanical properties is mainly due to the formation of tie chains or entanglement in the ternary blend films. These results demonstrate that DOAs have great potential for achieving high-performance flexible OSCs.

RESUMO

We have recently shown that exogenous administration of extracellular heat shock protein HSC70, a previously recognized intracellular chaperone protein, can protect against LPS-induced cardiac dysfunction through anti-inflammatory actions. However, whether it can also exert anti-hypertrophic effect is unknown. The present study was aimed to investigate the efficacy of HSC70 against cardiac hypertrophy and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Cardiomyocytes were isolated from the cardiac ventricles of neonatal Wistar rats and LPS (1 µg/mL) was used to induce the hypertrophic responses. We found that HSC70 (0.1, 1 and 5 µg/mL) pretreatment attenuated LPS-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy dose-dependently. In addition, HSC70 mitigated LPS-induced inflammatory mediators including TNF-α, IL-6, NO, iNOS and COX-2, with down-regulated protein expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9. Moreover, HSC70 repressed LPS-induced signaling of MAPK and Akt. Finally, HSC70 inhibited NF-κB subunit p65, and the DNA binding activity of NF-κB. Taken together, these findings suggest that in vitro HSC70 can exert anti-hypertrophic effects through inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators, which are potential mediated by the down-regulation of MAPK, Akt and NF-κB signaling pathways. In conclusion, extracellular HSC70 may be a novel pharmacologic strategy in the management of cardiac hypertrophy.

RESUMO

Smog has become a public environmental crisis in most areas of China, and in response, research efforts have mainly focused on the chemical properties of smog and its impact on human health. However, in-depth research on the public's perception of smog has not yet been conducted. A survey of residents living around eight state-controlled atmospheric environmental monitoring sites in Ningbo City was conducted using stratified sampling. The data was statistically analyzed to investigate people's views and behavioral tendencies in smog weather, the influence of different media reports on public outlook, and public opinions on the local atmosphere and pollution management in different areas. The results showed that people's perception of smog differs greatly from actual conditions, indicating that the public opinion tends to deviate when faced with a public crisis. Mainstream media (TV, newspaper, etc.), accounting for 67% of all media sources, are the main source for dissemination of smog information. The main sources of pollution, in order of decreasing contribution, according to residents of Ningbo City are as follows: motor vehicle exhaust, industrial coal combustion, large-scale construction, biomass burning, and kitchen fumes. IMPLICATIONS: Since 2011, most areas of China have been affected by frequent smog. Most research on smog has been concentrated on its causes, alert systems, and prevention measures, whereas in-depth research on the public perception of smog has not yet been conducted. When a risky environmental event such as smog occurs, consequences may be more serious than the event itself will cause if people take irrational measures because of lacking relevant knowledge. Therefore, investigating people's attitude and response to smog is both theoretically and practically significant.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the major pathogens that cause severe enteroviral infections. Our aim was to study the behavioral and household risk factors for its serious complications. METHODS: Between May 2011 and November 2012, we enrolled children who had symptoms of EV71 infection from six hospitals in Taiwan. The caregivers of each patient were interviewed to determine their hand hygiene habits in relation to EV71 infection. The severity of EV71 infection was classified as follows: Stage 1, hand-foot-mouth disease or herpangina; Stage 2, meningitis or myoclonic jerk; Stage 3A, encephalitis; Stage 3B, cardiopulmonary failure. Stages 2 to 3B were defined as severe EV71 infection. Children with Stages 3A and 3B infection were designated as the critical group. RESULTS: A total of 399 patients had laboratory-confirmed EV71 infection. Three risks factors were associated with the different degrees of severity in EV71 infection. Children <2 years old had much greater risks for severe EV71 infection [odds ratio (OR) 1.8; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.2-2.8], delayed medical evaluation for critical infection (OR 9.4; 95% CI, 3.6-24.1), and developmental retardation for cardiopulmonary failure (OR 8.3; 95% CI, 2.0-33.7). Among all the habits and household factors, caregivers in the critical group had a significantly lower rate in terms of cleaning the faucet after washing their hands (OR 2.63; 95% CI, 1.14-6.08). CONCLUSIONS: Children <2 years old, developmental retardation, and delayed medical intervention were associated with severe EV71 infection. Cleaning water faucets after hand washing was a protective habit that reduced the risk of complications.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to describe the clinical courses of infants born to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected mothers in Taiwan. Eleven children, including 1 set of twins, born to 10 HIV-infected mothers were included in the study. HIV antibodies were assayed and HIV-1 polymerase chain reaction (HIV-PCR) or virus cultures were performed; HIV infection was established when there were at least 2 separate positive results of HIV-PCR or culture. Three sets of primers detecting LTR-gag, pol and env were used. The viral load of HIV RNA was measured and used as an indicator of the treatment response. Two of the children were HIV-infected and received combination therapy, including 2 kinds of nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors plus 1 protease inhibitor. Neither of these children exhibited HIV-related symptoms or signs during the study period. Both mothers of the infected children were Taiwanese and their HIV infection status was not known during pregnancy. In contrast, HIV infection was found in early pregnancy in the 4 women living in Taiwan who were from other countries, all of whom received prophylactic therapy. The other 4 mothers who did not transmit the infection to the infant were Taiwanese, 3 of whom were known to be HIV-seropositive during pregnancy. Based on these results, the vertical rate of transmission was 18% (2/11). Early detection of HIV-infected pregnancy is vital to reduce the incidence of HIV-infected births.
