RESUMO

Therapy-related leukemia carries a poor prognosis, and leukemia after chemotherapy is a growing risk in clinic, whose mechanism is still not well understood. Ikaros transcription factor is an important regulator in hematopoietic cells development and differentiation. In the absence of Ikaros, lymphoid cell differentiation is blocked at an extremely early stage, and myeloid cell differentiation is also significantly affected. In this work, we showed that chemotherapeutic drug etoposide reduced the protein levels of several isoforms of Ikaros including IK1, IK2 and IK4, but not IK6 or IK7, by accelerating protein degradation, in leukemic cells. To investigate the molecular mechanism of Ikaros degradation induced by etoposide, immunoprecipitation coupled with LC-MS/MS analysis was conducted to identify changes in protein interaction with Ikaros before and after etoposide treatment, which uncovered KCTD5 protein. Our further study demonstrates that KCTD5 is the key stabilizing factor of Ikaros and chemotherapeutic drug etoposide induces Ikaros protein degradation through decreasing the interaction of Ikaros with KCTD5. These results suggest that etoposide may induce leukemic transformation by downregulating Ikaros via KCTD5, and our work may provide insights to attenuate the negative impact of chemotherapy on hematopoiesis.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) demonstrates promising applications in enhancing the corrosion and wear resistance of metals, but the susceptibility of this nanomaterial to agglomeration hinders its overall performance. In this study, the externally assisted corrosion inhibitor sodium molybdate (SM) was successfully constructed in diatomaceous earth (DE) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). This not only served as a molybdenum source for MoS2 but also enabled the preparation of DE@MoS2-SM microcapsules, achieving a corrosion inhibitor loading of up to 23.23%. The corrosion testing reveals that the composite coating, when compared to the pure epoxy coating, exhibits an impedance modulus 2 orders of magnitude higher (1.80 × 109 Ω·cm2), offering prolonged protection for magnesium alloys over a 40 day period. Furthermore, a filler content of 3% sustains a coefficient of friction (COF) at 0.55 for an extended duration, indicating commendable stability and wear resistance. The protective performance is ascribed to the synergistic enhancement of corrosion and wear resistance in the coatings, facilitated by the pore structure of DE, the high hardness of MoS2, and the obstructive influence of Na2MoO4. This approach offers a straightforward and efficient means of designing microcapsules for use in corrosive environments, whose application can be extended in industrial fields. In particular, we promote the application of nautical instruments, underwater weapons, and seawater batteries in the shipbuilding industry and marine engineering.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) play an essential role in tumor development by secreting exosomes. Scavenger receptor class A member 5 (SCARA5) is a newly identified tumor suppressor. This study aimed to investigate the effects of BMSCs-derived exosomes (BMSCs-Exos) on CRC development and to explore their regulatory mechanisms. BMSCs-Exos showed an oval-shaped, bilayer membrane structure. BMSCs-Exos inhibited growth and motility of CRC cells, while BMSCs-Exos with SCARA5 knockdown significantly promoted cell proliferation and movement. Exosomal SCARA5 also effectively suppressed colorectal tumor growth in mouse xenografts. Further analysis revealed that exosomal SCARA5 inhibited the phosphorylation of protein kinase B and phosphoinositide 3-kinase in both CRC cells and tumors. In conclusion, SCARA5 in BMSCs-Exos inhibited CRC progression by inactivating PI3K/Akt, thus suggesting the potential clinical application of SCARA5-containing BMSCs-Exos for CRC treatment.

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification is a highly challenging task, particularly in fields like crop yield prediction and agricultural infrastructure detection. These applications often involve complex image types, such as soil, vegetation, water bodies, and urban structures, encompassing a variety of surface features. In HSI, the strong correlation between adjacent bands leads to redundancy in spectral information, while using image patches as the basic unit of classification causes redundancy in spatial information. To more effectively extract key information from this massive redundancy for classification, we innovatively proposed the CESA-MCFormer model, building upon the transformer architecture with the introduction of the Center Enhanced Spatial Attention (CESA) module and Morphological Convolution (MC). The CESA module combines hard coding and soft coding to provide the model with prior spatial information before the mixing of spatial features, introducing comprehensive spatial information. MC employs a series of learnable pooling operations, not only extracting key details in both spatial and spectral dimensions but also effectively merging this information. By integrating the CESA module and MC, the CESA-MCFormer model employs a "Selection-Extraction" feature processing strategy, enabling it to achieve precise classification with minimal samples, without relying on dimension reduction techniques such as PCA. To thoroughly evaluate our method, we conducted extensive experiments on the IP, UP, and Chikusei datasets, comparing our method with the latest advanced approaches. The experimental results demonstrate that the CESA-MCFormer achieved outstanding performance on all three test datasets, with Kappa coefficients of 96.38%, 98.24%, and 99.53%, respectively.

A neoteric round sieve diatomite (De) decorated with sea-urchin-like alpha-type iron trioxide (α-Fe2O3) synthetics was prepared by the hydrothermal method and further calcination. The results of the electromagnetic (EM) parameters of α-Fe2O3-decorated De (α-Fe2O3@D) showed that the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of α-Fe2O3@D could reach -54.2 dB at 11.52 GHz and the matched absorber thickness was 3 mm. The frequency bandwidth corresponding to the microwave RL value below -20 dB was up to 8.24 GHz (9.76-18 GHz). This indicates that α-Fe2O3@D composite can be a lightweight and stable material; because of the low density of De (1.9-2.3 g/cm3), the density of α-Fe2O3@D composite material is lower than that of α-Fe2O3 (5.18 g/cm3). We found that the combination of the magnetic loss of sea-urchin-like α-Fe2O3 and the dielectric loss of De has the most dominant role in electromagnetic wave absorption and loss. We focused on comparing the absorbing properties before and after the formation of sea-urchin-like α-Fe2O3 and explain in detail the effects of the structure and crystal shape of this novel composite on the absorbing properties.

Source Code Generation (SCG) is a prevalent research field in the automation software engineering sector that maps specific descriptions to various sorts of executable code. Along with the numerous intensive studies, diverse SCG types that integrate different scenarios and contexts continue to emerge. As the ultimate purpose of SCG, Natural Language-based Source Code Generation (NLSCG) is growing into an attractive and challenging field, as the expressibility and extremely high abstraction of the input end. The booming large-scale dataset generated by open-source code repositories and Q&A resources, the innovation of machine learning algorithms, and the development of computing capacity make the NLSCG field promising and give more opportunities to the model implementation and perfection. Besides, we observed an increasing interest stream of NLSCG relevant studies recently, presenting quite various technical schools. However, many studies are bound to specific datasets with customization issues, producing occasional successful solutions with tentative technical methods. There is no systematic study to explore and promote the further development of this field. We carried out a systematic literature survey and tool research to find potential improvement directions. First, we position the role of NLSCG among various SCG genres, and specify the generation context empirically via software development domain knowledge and programming experiences; second, we explore the selected studies collected by a thoughtfully designed snowballing process, clarify the NLSCG field and understand the NLSCG problem, which lays a foundation for our subsequent investigation. Third, we model the research problems from technical focus and adaptive challenges, and elaborate insights gained from the NLSCG research backlog. Finally, we summarize the latest technology landscape over the transformation model and depict the critical tactics used in the essential components and their correlations. This research addresses the challenges of bridging the gap between natural language processing and source code analytics, outlines different dimensions of NLSCG research concerns and technical utilities, and shows a bounded technical context of NLSCG to facilitate more future studies in this promising area.

Colorectal cancer (CBC) is the third most common cancer in men and the second most common cancer in women in the world, as well as the second leading cause of death among the world's cancers. In this study, to identify the genes involved in the CRC clinical outcomes, the expression of B cell leukemia/lymphoma 3 (BCL-3) gene in patients with colorectal cancer was investigated along with serum level of ß-catenin. In this study, samples of 23 patients with colorectal cancer were prepared. mRNA was extracted and then cDNA was prepared for evaluation of PCR. Then, with specific primers for the BCL3, a semi-quantitative RT-PCR test was performed. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to assess the serum level of ß-catenin. In this study, 23 men with an average age of years were included. BCL-3 expression in tumor tissue was significantly higher than its level in healthy tissue (P=0.021). BCL-3 expression at stage 0 of the tumor was significantly lower than at all other stages (P<0.05), and the comparison between the rest of the CRC stages was not significant (P>0.05). The median of serum ß-catenin levels in the patients was 32.83 (22.45, 46.09). There was no significant difference in the amount of serum ß-catenin between all 5 stages of the disease and in terms of lymph node metastasis. There were no relationships between age, BMI, smoking history, familial CRC history, and BCL-3 or ß-catenin serum levels (P>0.05). In this study, the expression of the BCL-3 gene in tumor specimens was high. It can be said that the BCL-3 gene can act as one of the genes involved in colorectal cancer, along with some genes such as ß-catenin. While BCL-3 was associated with a higher stage of CRC, ß-catenin didn't show such a relationship with CRC.

To capture both epithelial and mesenchymal subpopulations of CTCs at different metastatic stages of PCa patients, here we constructed a novel dual-antibody-functionalized microfluidic device by employing antibodies against PSMA and EpCAM. In vitro experiments with the dual capture system for capturing both LnCAP and LnCAP-EMT cells have shown significantly enhanced capture efficiency as compared to that of the EpCAM single capture system. Furthermore, the dual capture system could successfully identify CTCs in 20 out of 24 (83.3%) PCa patients, and the CTCs counts from the dual capture system were statistically correlated with the TNM stage of patients ( P < 0.05), while conventional diagnostic methods, such as serum PSA level and Gleason score, failed to correlate to patient TNM stages. To further explore potential clinical application of our dual capture system, captured CTCs were recovered and subjected to qRT-PCR to quantify known factors involved in PCa development and therapy. The results demonstrated that the combined detection of SChLAP1 and PSA in CTCs is a potential marker for identifying patients with metastatic PCa, while detection of AR and PD-L1 in CTCs may have the potential to determine the sensitivity of PCa patients to androgen deprivation therapy and immunotherapy, respectively. Taken together, the dual-antibody-functionalized microfluidic device established in our study overcomes the limitations of some CTC capture platforms that only detect epithelial or mesenchymal CTCs in PCa patients, and detection of the PCa-related RNA signatures from purified CTCs holds great promise to offer warnings for early metastasis of PCa and may provide guidance for therapy decisions.

BACKGROUND It is now widely acknowledged that chronic inflammation is closely associated with the process of cancer development. As a simple noninvasive blood-based test, hematological parameters in the routine blood test have been considered as inflammation markers. We aimed to evaluate platelet count (PC), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), white blood cell count (WBC), mean platelet volume (MPV), number of neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio (NLR), and platelet count/lymphocytes ratio (PLR) as surrogate inflammatory markers in breast cancer (BC) patients, and we compared these to those in healthy individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study was conducted in Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from July 2014 to April 2015, including 110 cases of pathologically diagnosed BC patients and 78 cases of healthy females. Retrospective analysis of selected hematological parameters was performed between the 2 groups, as well as assessment of the correlation between these indexes and clinicopathological characteristics of the 110 breast cancer patients. RESULTS The mean values of RDW, MPV, NLR, and PLR were significantly higher in BC patients compared to the control group. The level of MPV exhibited positive correlations with lymph node metastasis and the Ki67 proliferation index in preoperative BC patients (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis further showed that MPV was independently associated with the risk of BC lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Hematological parameters of RDW, MPV, NLR, and PLR can be used as an adjuvant tool for the diagnosis of BC. More importantly, the value of MPV can reflect the Ki67 proliferation index before surgery and identify patients with positive lymph node metastasis.

Objective: To identify the correlation between thrombosis and atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) (SLE/aPLs) through high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) of the carotid artery. Methods: A single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted. We collected consecutive patients with SLE/aPLs and healthy controls who underwent carotid HR-MRI examinations. The morphometric characteristics of the common carotid artery (CCA), internal carotid artery (ICA), external carotid artery (ECA), and carotid bulb (Sinus) were measured, and the differences in morphometric parameters between different groups were analyzed. Results: A total of 144 carotid arteries were analyzed. Compared with the control group, the wall area, wall thickness (WT and WTmax), and normalized wall index of CCA, ICA, ECA, and Sinus were increased in patients with SLE/aPLs, and the total vascular area (TVA) of CCA, ICA, and Sinus, and the bifurcation angle (BIFA) of ICA-ECA were also increased. A negative lupus anticoagulant (LAC) (with or without positive anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) or anti-ß2glycoprotein antibody (aß2GPI)) contributed to illustrating lower increased TVA and thickened vessel walls of CCA and ICA in SLE/aPLs patients without thrombotic events. Logistic regression analysis showed that WTmaxSinus and WTmaxGlobal were independent risk factors for thrombotic events in SLE/aPLs patients. The receiver operator characteristic curve showed that the cut-off value of WTmaxSinus was 2.855 mm, and WTmaxGlobal was 3.370 mm. Conclusion: HR-MRI ensures the complete and accurate measurement of carotid morphometric parameters. Compared with the control group, the carotid artery in patients with SLE/aPLs is mainly characterized by diffusely thickened vessel walls, and the patients with thrombotic events showed additional higher vascular area of CCA and ICA, and BIFA of ICA-ECA without significant change in lumen area. The carotid arteries of SLE/aPLs patients with thrombotic events exhibited significant vessel wall thickening in all segments except ECA compared to those without thrombotic events. LAC-negative and non-thrombotic events distinguish relatively early atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries in patients with SLE/aPLs. Patients with SLE/aPLs that possess circumscribed thickened carotid vessel walls (>3.370 mm), particularly thickened at the Sinus (>2.855 mm), may require management strategies for the risk of thrombotic events.

Background: To investigate the distribution and burden of monosodium urate (MSU) deposition in hyperuricemia and gout patients with dual-energy computed tomography (DECT). Methods: A total of 1,936 consecutive patients from January 1, 2009, to September 15, 2017, underwent DECT examinations in Jinling Hospital. Of these, 1,294 patients were excluded due to other clinical diagnoses (n=1,041), inappropriate locations (n=82), poor-quality images (n=105), training cases (n=30) and duplicated data (n=36). Finally, 642 patients were included in this study. We retrospectively analyzed 1,127 DECT examinations in 642 consecutive patients (hyperuricemia group, n=121; gout group, n=521) and recorded the volume and number of MSU deposits. For each anatomical location, we recorded MSU deposition in the soft tissue and joint cavity. MSU deposition was analyzed and compared between groups. For normally distributed data, independent sample t-tests were used for comparison between the two groups. The independent samples nonparametric test was used to analyze nonnormally distributed data. Results: (I) The burden of MSU deposition in the gout group {volume [0.14 (0.04-1.36)] and numbers [10.00 (5.00-19.00)]} was significantly higher than that {volume [0.08 (0.02-0.47), P=0.003] and numbers [9.50 (2.00-16.00), P=0.01]} in the hyperuricemia group. (II) The burden of MSU deposition in the knees {volume [0.24 (0.01-1.79), P=0.002] and quantity [6.00 (2.00-12.00), P=0.04]} and feet {volume [0.10 (0.04-0.66)] and number [9.00 (5.00-15.00)]} was significantly higher in the gout group than those {knees: the volume [0.03 (0.00-0.27), P=0.002] and the quantity [4.00 (0.00-9.00), P=0.04]; feet: the volume [0.07 (0.02-0.19), P=0.003)] and number [8.00 (2.25-12.00), P=0.04]} in the hyperuricemia group, respectively. (III) In the hyperuricemia group, the volume of MSU deposition was significantly higher in the soft tissues of the knee (0.022±0.042) and ankle (0.062±0.305) than in those (knee: 0.001±0.005, P=0.02; ankle: 0.027±0.234, P=0.02) in the joint cavity. Conclusions: Although subclinical urate deposition can occur in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia, the burden of urate deposition is greater in patients with symptomatic gout, and the distribution is more pronounced in the foot/knee. Thus, more effective patient management and monitoring can be achieved by measuring the burden of MSU deposits in the patient's feet/knees. These data suggest that a threshold for urate crystal volume at typical sites may be required before symptomatic disease develops.

PURPOSE: This study sought to determine whether machine learning (ML) can be used to better identify the risk factors and establish the prediction models for the prevalence and severity of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in nondialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and compare the performance of distinctive ML models with conventional logistic regression (LR) model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In all, 3701 Chinese nondialysis CKD patients undergoing noncontrast cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanning were enrolled from November 2013 to December 2017. CAC score derived from the cardiac CT was calculated with the calcium scoring software and was used to assess and stratify the prevalence and severity of CAC. Four ML models (LR, random forest, support vector machine, and k-nearest neighbor) and the corresponding feature ranks were conducted. The model that incorporated the independent predictors was shown as the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Area under the curve (AUC) was used to present the prediction value. ML model performance was compared with the traditional LR model using pairwise comparisons of AUCs. RESULTS: Of the 3701 patients, 943 (25.5%) patients had CAC. Of the 943 patients with CAC, 764 patients (20.6%) and 179 patients (4.8%) had an Agatston CAC score of 1 to 300 and ≥300, respectively. The primary cohort and the independent validation cohort comprised 2957 patients and 744 patients, respectively. For the prevalence of CAC, the AUCs of ML models were from 0.78 to 0.82 in the training data set and the internal validation cohort. For the severity of CAC, the AUCs of the 4 ML models were from 0.67 to 0.70 in the training data set and from 0.53 to 0.70 in the internal validation cohort. For the prevalence of CAC, the AUC was 0.80 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.77-0.83) for ML (LR) versus 0.80 (95% CI: 0.77-0.83) for the traditional LR model ( P =0.2533). For the severity of CAC, the AUC was 0.70 (95% CI: 0.63-0.77) for ML (LR) versus 0.70 (95% CI: 0.63-0.77) for traditional LR model ( P =0.982). CONCLUSIONS: This study constructed prediction models for the presence and severity of CAC based on Agatston scores derived from noncontrast cardiac CT scanning in nondialysis CKD patients using ML, and showed ML LR had the best performance.

The effects of three pyridine derivative additives, 4-hydroxypyridine, 4-picolinic acid, and 4-cyanopyridine, on Al-Mn coatings were investigated in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride-AlCl3-MnCl2 (EMIC-AlCl3-MnCl2) ionic liquids. The smooth mirror-like bright Al-Mn coatings were obtained only in the EMIC-AlCl3-MnCl2 ionic liquids containing 4-cyanopyridine, while the matte Al-Mn coatings were electrodeposited from EMIC-AlCl3-MnCl2 without additives or containing either 4-hydroxypyridine or 4-picolinic acid. The scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction showed that the bright Al-Mn coatings consisted of nanocrystals and had a strong (200) preferential orientation, while the particle size of matte Al-Mn coatings were within the micron range. The brightening mechanism of 4-cyanopyridine is due to it being adsorbed onto the cathode to produce the combined effect of (1) generating an overpotential to promote Al-Mn nucleation; (2) inhibiting the growth of the deposited nuclei and enabling them grow preferentially, making the coating composed of nanocrystals and with a smooth surface. The brightening effect of 4-cyanopyridine on the Al-Mn coatings was far better than that of the 4-hydroxypyridine and the 4-picolinic acid. In addition, the bright Al-Mn coating was prepared in a bath with 6 mmol·L-1 4-cyanopyridine and displayed superior corrosion resistance relative to the matte coatings, which could be attributed to its unique nanocrystalline structure that increased the number of grain boundaries and accelerated the formation of the protective layer of the corrosion products.

RESUMO

CRISPR/Cas genome editing is a simple, cost effective, and highly specific technique for introducing genetic variations. In mammalian cells, CRISPR/Cas can facilitate non-homologous end joining, homology- directed repair, and single-base exchanges. Cas9/Cas12a nuclease, dCas9 transcriptional regulators, base editors, PRIME editors and RNA editing tools are widely used in basic research. Currently, a variety of CRISPR/Cas-based therapeutics are being investigated in clinical trials. Among many new findings that have advanced the field, we highlight a few recent advances that are relevant to CRISPR/Cas-based gene therapies for monogenic human genetic diseases.

The composites of polyaniline and TiO2 nanoparticles with different contents were prepared in the aqueous solution of phosphoric acid, in which the phosphoric acid was selected as the protonic acid to improve the conductivity of polyaniline. In the composites, the TiO2 nanoparticles with the size of about 20 nm were coated by a layer of polyaniline film with a thickness of about 5 nm. Then, the gas sensors were constructed by a liquid⁻gas interfacial self-assembly method. The gas-sensing properties of the composites-based gas sensors obviously improved after doping with TiO2 nanoparticles, and the sensor response of the composites increased several times to NH3 from 10 ppm to 50 ppm than that of pure polyaniline. Especially when the mass ratio of TiO2 to aniline monomer was 2, it exhibited the best gas response (about 11.2⁻50 ppm NH3), repeatability and good selectivity to NH3 at room temperature. The p⁻n junction structure consisting of the polyaniline and TiO2 nanoparticles played an important role in improving gas-sensing properties. This paper will provide a method to improve the gas-sensing properties of polyaniline and optimum doping proportion of TiO2 nanoparticles.

Background: The liver-specific microRNA-122 (miR-122) has been demonstrated as a powerful and promising biomarker of hepatic diseases. However, the researches on the accuracy of miR122 detection in chronic viral hepatitis have been inconsistent, leading us to conduct this meta-analysis to systematically summarize the diagnostic value of circulating miR-122 in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and/or hepatitis C virus (HCV)-associated chronic viral hepatitis.Methods: A comprehensive literature search (updated to January 30, 2019) in PubMed, Cochrane library, EMBASE, CNKI, Wanfang, and CQVIP databases was performed to identify eligible studies. The sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), positive and negative likelihood ratios (PLR and NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and area under the curve (AUC) were pooled to explore the diagnostic performance of circulating miR-122. Subgroup and threshold effect analysis were further carried out to explore the heterogeneity.Results: Overall, 15 studies were finally included in this meta-analysis according to the exclusion and inclusion criteria. The pooled estimates indicated a moderately high diagnostic accuracy for circulating miR-122, with a sensitivity of 0.92 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.86-0.95], a specificity of 0.84 (95% CI, 0.78-0.89), a PLR of 5.7 (95% CI, 4.7-8.1), a NLR of 0.1 (95% CI, 0.06-0.18), a DOR of 57 (95% CI 25-129), and an AUC of 0.93 (95% CI, 0.91-0.95). The subgroup analysis demonstrated that diagnostic accuracy was better for HCV-associated chronic viral hepatitis patients and non-Chinese compared with other subgroups. In addition, we found that serum might be a more promising matrix for detecting the expression of miR-122 than plasma.Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that circulating miR-122 have a relatively high diagnostic value for chronic viral hepatitis detection, especially in the patients with HCV-associated chronic viral hepatitis. However, further large cohort studies are still required to confirm our findings.

Based on hydrogen bonding, the highly uniform polyaniline (PANI) nanotubes were synthesized by self-assembly method using citric acid (CA) as the dopant and the structure-directing agent by optimizing the molar ratio of CA to aniline monomer (Ani). Synthesis conditions like reaction temperature and mechanical stirring were considered to explore the effects of hydrogen bonding on the morphologies. The effects of CA on the final morphology of the products were also investigated. The as-synthesized CA doped polyaniline (PANI) nanomaterials were further deposited on the plate electrodes for the test of gas sensing performance to ammonia (NH3). The sensitivity to various concentrations of NH3, the repeatability, and the stability of the sensors were also tested and analyzed. As a result, it was found that the PANI nanomaterial synthesized at the CA/Ani molar ratio of 0.5 has highly uniform tubular morphology and shows the best sensing performance to NH3. It makes the PANI nanotubes a promising material for high performance gas sensing to NH3.

Persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs), which can remain luminescent after cessation of excitation, have emerged as important materials in biomedicine due to their special ability to eliminate tissue autofluorescence. Even though significant advances have been made in bioimaging, studies on controlled synthesis of PLNPs with tunable properties are lacking. Until now, only a few studies have reported the synthesis of quasi-spherical ZnGa2O4:Cr PLNPs, and direct synthesis of PLNPs with other shapes and chemical compositions has not been reported. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of Zn2GeO4:Mn (ZGO:Mn) persistent luminescence nanorods (NRs). The length and persistent luminescence of ZGO:Mn NRs can be fine-tuned by simply changing the pH of the hydrothermal reaction system. Moreover, ZGO:Mn NRs exhibit rapid growth rate, and NRs with strong persistent luminescence can be obtained within 30 min of hydrothermal treatment. Aptamer-guided ZGO:Mn bioprobes were further constructed and applied to serum lysozyme analysis. Serum samples from patients with lung cancer, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer were collected, and the concentrations of lysozyme in these samples were determined. Since the bioprobes displayed long persistent luminescence, serum autofluorescence interference was completely eliminated. The lysozyme quantification results were in good agreement with those obtained using a clinical method, suggesting the good potential of the bioprobes in the analysis of clinical samples. The developed ZGO:Mn NRs possess tunable length and persistent luminescence, and they are ideal for eliminating autofluorescence interference in biosensing, making them valuable in research areas such as studying the functions of biomolecules and monitoring of molecular/cellular networks in their native contexts.

This meta-analysis aims to compare percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) to medical treatment (MT) for symptomatic vertebral artery stenosis (SVAS) treatment. We searched PubMed, Springer, Google Scholar, Clinical Trials, Cochrane Central, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and China Biological Medicine databases. All relevant comparative trials were included. All summary estimates were calculated by random-effect models. Ten comparative trials involving 672 patients were identified. Within 30-day follow-up, there was no significant difference between PTA plus MT and MT alone in vascular death, any stroke, posterior circulation TIA, posterior circulation infarction, and ischemic stroke (all P > 0.05). With a follow-up of more than 1 year, no significant difference was found between PTA plus MT and MT alone in all-cause death (3 vs. 7 %, P = 0.24), vascular death (4 vs. 7 %, P = 0.34), posterior circulation stroke (5 vs. 8 %, P = 0.48), posterior circulation ischemic events (8 vs. 25 %, P = 0.23), posterior circulation TIA (10 vs. 38 %, P = 0.11), posterior circulation infarction (6 vs. 12 %, P = 0.51), vertebral artery occlusion (6 vs. 12 %, P = 0.58), and in secondary long-term events, including any stroke, anterior circulation stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and myocardial infarction (all P > 0.05), although PTA plus MT could largely reduce the vertebral artery stenosis rate [MD 63.05 %, 95 % CI (32.77-93.34 %), P < 0.01]. Hence, PTA plus MT may be not superior to MT alone for SVAS treatment. Larger randomized trials are needed to verify the optimum therapy for SVAS.

Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) existing in miRNAs correlate with the susceptibility to urological cancers. However, a clear consensus still not reached due to the limited statistical power in individual study. Thus, we concluded a meta-analysis to systematically evaluate the association between microRNA SNPs and urological cancer risk. Eligible studies were collected from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CNKI databases. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated to assess the strength of the relationships between three SNPs (miR-196a2, C>T rs11614913; miR-146a, G>C rs2910164; and miR-499, A>G rs3746444) and the risk of urological cancers. In addition, the stability of our analysis was evaluated by publication bias, sensitivity and heterogeneity analysis. Overall, a total of 17,019 subjects from 14 studies were included in this meta-analysis. We found that CT (miR-196a2, C>T rs11614913) was a risk factor for renal cell carcinoma (CT vs. CC: OR = 1.72, 95%CI = 1.05-2.80, P = 0.03, I2 = 66%), especially in Asian population (CT vs. CC: OR = 1.17, 95%CI = 1.04-1.32, P < 0.01, I2 = 0%). miR-146a G>C rs2910164 was a protective factor of urological cancers (C vs. G: OR = 0.87, 95%CI = 0.81-0.93, P < 0.01, I2 = 0%), especially for bladder cancer. miR-499 A>G rs3746444 was correlated with an increased risk of urological cancers, specifically in Asian population. In conclusion, our meta-analysis suggests that polymorphisms in microRNAs, miR-196a2, C>T rs11614913, miR-146a G>C rs2910164 and miR-499 A>G rs3746444, may be associated with the development of urological cancers and the risks mainly exist in Asian populations.
