Upon gamete fusion, animal egg cells secrete proteases from cortical granules to establish a fertilization envelope as a block to polyspermy1-4. Fertilization in flowering plants is more complex and involves the delivery of two non-motile sperm cells by pollen tubes5,6. Simultaneous penetration of ovules by multiple pollen tubes (polytubey) is usually avoided, thus indirectly preventing polyspermy7,8. How plant egg cells regulate the rejection of extra tubes after successful fertilization is not known. Here we report that the aspartic endopeptidases ECS1 and ECS2 are secreted to the extracellular space from a cortical network located at the apical domain of the Arabidopsis egg cell. This reaction is triggered only after successful fertilization. ECS1 and ECS2 are exclusively expressed in the egg cell and transcripts are degraded immediately after gamete fusion. ECS1 and ESC2 specifically cleave the pollen tube attractor LURE1. As a consequence, polytubey is frequent in ecs1 ecs2 double mutants. Ectopic secretion of these endopeptidases from synergid cells led to a decrease in the levels of LURE1 and reduced the rate of pollen tube attraction. Together, these findings demonstrate that plant egg cells sense successful fertilization and elucidate a mechanism as to how a relatively fast post-fertilization block to polytubey is established by fertilization-induced degradation of attraction factors.

Diagnosing, predicting disease outcome, and identifying effective treatment targets for virus-related cancers are lacking. Protein biomarkers have the potential to bridge the gap between prevention and treatment for these types of cancers. While it has been shown that certain antibodies against EBV proteins could be used to detect nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), antibodies targeting are solely a tiny part of the about 80 proteins expressed by the EBV genome. Furthermore, it remains unclear what role other viruses play in NPC since many diseases are the result of multiple viral infections. For the first time, this study measured both IgA and IgG antibody responses against 646 viral proteins from 23 viruses in patients with NPC and control subjects using nucleic acid programmable protein arrays. Candidate seromarkers were then validated by ELISA using 1665 serum samples from three clinical cohorts. We demonstrated that the levels of five candidate seromarkers (EBV-BLLF3-IgA, EBV-BLRF2-IgA, EBV-BLRF2-IgG, EBV-BDLF1-IgA, EBV-BDLF1-IgG) in NPC patients were significantly elevated than controls. Additional examination revealed that NPC could be successfully diagnosed by combining the clinical biomarker EBNA1-IgA with the five anti-EBV antibodies. The sensitivity of the six-antibody signature at 95% specificity to diagnose NPC was comparable to the current clinically-approved biomarker combination, VCA-IgA, and EBNA1-IgA. However, the recombinant antigens of the five antibodies are easier to produce and standardize compared to the native viral VCA proteins. This suggests the potential replacement of the traditional VCA-IgA assay with the 5-antibodies combination to screen and diagnose NPC. Additionally, we investigated the prognostic significance of these seromarkers titers in NPC. We showed that NPC patients with elevated BLLF3-IgA and BDLF1-IgA titers in their serum exhibited significantly poorer disease-free survival, suggesting the potential of these two seromarkers as prognostic indicators of NPC. These findings will help develop serological tests to detect and treat NPC in the future.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a heterogeneous disease, although disease stratification using in-depth plasma proteomics has not been performed to date. By measuring more than 1000 proteins in the plasma of 147 DLBCL patients using data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry and antibody array, DLBCL patients were classified into four proteomic subtypes (PS-I-IV). Patients with the PS-IV subtype and worst prognosis had increased levels of proteins involved in inflammation, including a high expression of metalloproteinase inhibitor-1 (TIMP-1) that was associated with poor survival across two validation cohorts (n = 180). Notably, the combination of TIMP-1 with the international prognostic index (IPI) identified 64.00% to 88.24% of relapsed and 65.00% to 80.49% of deceased patients in the discovery and two validation cohorts, which represents a 24.00% to 41.67% and 20.00% to 31.70% improvement compared to the IPI score alone, respectively. Taken together, we demonstrate that DLBCL heterogeneity is reflected in the plasma proteome and that TIMP-1, together with the IPI, could improve the prognostic stratification of patients.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent cancer in China, with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and liver cirrhosis (LC) being high-risk factors for developing HCC. Here, we determined the serum proteomes (762 proteins) of 125 healthy controls and Hepatitis B virus-infected CHB, LC, and HCC patients and constructed the first cancerous trajectory of liver diseases. The results not only reveal that the majority of altered biological processes were involved in the hallmarks of cancer (inflammation, metastasis, metabolism, vasculature, and coagulation) but also identify potential therapeutic targets in cancerous pathways (i.e., IL17 signaling pathway). Notably, the biomarker panels for detecting HCC in CHB and LC high-risk populations were further developed using machine learning in two cohorts comprised of 200 samples (discovery cohort = 125 and validation cohort = 75). The protein signatures significantly improved the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of HCC (CHB discovery and validation cohort = 0.953 and 0.891, respectively; LC discovery and validation cohort = 0.966 and 0.818, respectively) compared to using the traditional biomarker, alpha-fetoprotein, alone. Finally, selected biomarkers were validated with parallel reaction monitoring mass spectrometry in an additional cohort (n = 120). Altogether, our results provide fundamental insights into the continuous changes of cancer biology processes in liver diseases and identify candidate protein targets for early detection and intervention.

The ongoing evolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to the emergence of different variants of concerns with immune evasion that have been prevalent over the past three years. Nanobodies, the functional variable regions of camelid heavy-chain-only antibodies, have garnered interest in developing neutralizing antibodies due to their smaller size, structural stability, ease of production, high affinity, and low immunogenicity, among other characteristics. In this work, we describe an integrated proteomics platform for the high-throughput screening of nanobodies against different SARS-CoV-2 spike variants. To demonstrate this platform, we immunized a camel with subunit 1 (S1) of the wild-type spike protein and constructed a nanobody phage library. The binding and neutralizing activities of the nanobodies against 72 spike variants were then measured, resulting in the identification of two nanobodies (C-282 and C-39) with broad neutralizing activity against six non-Omicron variants (D614G, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Kappa) and five Omicron variants (BA.1-5). Their neutralizing capability was validated using in vitro pseudovirus-based neutralization assays. All these results demonstrate the utility of our proteomics platform to identify new nanobodies with broad neutralizing capability and to develop a treatment for patients with SARS-CoV-2 variant infection in the future.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to investigate the protective potential of salidroside in both lung ischemia/reperfusion injury (LIRI) mice model and cell hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)model and the involvement of ferroptosis and JAK2/STAT3 pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After we established the IR-induced lung injury model in mice, we administered salidroside and the ferroptosis inhibitor, ferrostatin-1, then assessed the lung tissue injury, ferroptosis (levels of reactive oxygen species level, malondialdehyde and glutathione), and inflammation in lung tissues. The levels of ferroptosis-related proteins (glutathione peroxidase 4, fibroblast-specific protein 1, solute carrier family 1 member 5 and glutaminase 2) in the lung tissue were measured with Western blotting. Next, BEAS-2B cells were used to establish an H/R cell model and treated with salidroside or ferrostatin-1 before the cell viability and the levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), inflammatory factor, ferroptosis-related proteins were measured. The activation of the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway was measured with Western blotting, then its role was confirmed with STAT3 knockdown. RESULTS: Remarkably, salidroside was found to alleviate ferroptosis, inflammation, and lung injury in LIRI mice and the cell injury in H/R cell model. Severe ferroptosis were observed in LIRI mice models and H/R-induced BEAS-2B cells, which was alleviated by salidroside. Furthermore, salidroside could inhibit JAK2/STAT3 activation induced by LIRI. STAT3 knockdown could enhance the effect of salidroside treatment on H/R-induced cell damage and ferroptosis in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: Salidroside inhibits ferroptosis to alleviate lung ischemia reperfusion injury via the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway.

The response rate of anti-PD1 therapy is limited, and the influence of anti-PD1 therapy on cancer patients is unclear. To address these challenges, we conducted a longitudinal analysis of plasma proteomic changes with anti-PD1 therapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS), and lymphoma patients. We included 339 plasma samples before and after anti-PD1 therapy from 193 patients with NSCLC, ASPS, or lymphoma. The plasma proteins were detected using data-independent acquisition-mass spectrometry and customable antibody microarrays. Differential proteomic characteristics in responders (R) and non-responders (NR) before and after anti-PD1 therapy were elucidated. A total of 1019 proteins were detected using our in-depth proteomics platform and distributed across 10-12 orders of abundance. By comparing the differential plasma proteome expression between R and NR groups, 50, 206, and 268 proteins were identified in NSCLC, ASPS, and lymphoma patients, respectively. Th17, IL-17, and JAK-STAT signal pathways were identified upregulated in NR group, while cellular senescence and transcriptional misregulation pathways were activated in R group. Longitudinal proteomics analysis revealed the IL-17 signaling pathway was downregulated after treatment. Consistently, many proteins were identified as potential combinatorial therapeutic targets (e.g., IL-17A and CD22). Five noninvasive biomarkers (FLT4, SFTPB, GNPTG, F5, and IL-17A) were further validated in an independent lymphoma cohort (n = 39), and another three noninvasive biomarkers (KIT, CCL3, and TNFSF1) were validated in NSCLC cohort (n = 76). Our results provide molecular insights into the anti-PD1 therapy in cancer patients and identify new therapeutic strategies for anti-PD1-resistant patients.

In the field of aquaculture, the enhancement of animal health and disease prevention is progressively being tackled using alternatives to antibiotics, including vaccines and probiotics. This study was designed to evaluate the potential of a recombinant Bacillus methylotrophicus, engineered to express the outer membrane channel protein TolC of Aeromonas hydrophila AH3 and the green fluorescent protein GFP, as an oral vaccine. Initially, the genes encoding tolC and GFP were cloned into a prokaryotic expression system, and anti-TolC mouse antiserum was generated. Subsequently, the tolC gene was subcloned into a modified pMDGFP plasmid, which was transformed into B. methylotrophicus WM-1 for protein expression. The recombinant B. methylotrophicus BmT was then administered to grass carp via co-feeding, and its efficacy as an oral vaccine was assessed. Our findings demonstrated successful expression of the 55 kDa TolC and 28 kDa GFP proteins, and the preparation of polyclonal antibodies with high specificity. The BmT exhibited stable expression of the GFP-TolC fusion protein and excellent genetic stability. Following oral immunization, significant elevations were observed in serum-specific IgM levels and the activities of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and lysozyme (LZM) in grass carp. Concurrently, significant upregulation of immune-related genes, including IFN-I, IL-10, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IgT, was noted in the intestines, head kidney, and spleen of the grass carp. Colonization tests further revealed that the BmT persisted in the gut of immunized fish even after a fasting period of 7 days. Notably, oral administration of BmT enhanced the survival rate of grass carp following A. hydrophila infection. These results suggest that the oral BmT vaccine developed in this study holds promise for future applications in aquaculture.

BACKGROUND: As a rare auricular deformity, despite numerous surgical procedures for correcting moderate-to-severe question mark ears described in past studies, there remains a need to explore a more cost-effective approach. The optimal utilization of ear cartilage and surrounding skin while achieving superior outcomes continues to pose a significant challenge. METHODS: From 2018 to 2023, twenty-four patients with unilateral question mark ear were enrolled in this study. Seven of them were severe type deformities (absence of lower part of auricle), and seventeen were moderate (only cleft between helix and lobule). All patients were treated with new method using local cartilage and flap without damage in unaffected area. RESULTS: All patients were satisfied with significant improvement of question mark ear and the overall symmetrical appearance. The surgical scar was not obvious. No complications were observed. The follow-up period revealed that the corrective procedure kept producing the symmetrical and cosmetic results. CONCLUSION: Our new method enables optimal utilization of deformed tissue and surrounding skin, rendering this method effective and reliable for correcting moderate-to-severe question mark ears. OBJECTIVES: Recently, radial cartilage incision (first-stage) at an early age combined with free auricular composite tissue grafting (second-stage) can effectively correct the concha-type microtia with the moderate or severe folded cartilage in the middle and upper third auricle, but radial cartilage incision's effects on the growth of the ear remain to be determined. The authors aimed to evaluate the effects of radial cartilage incision in young rabbits model. METHODS: Ten New Zealand white rabbits were included in our experiment. Two ears of each rabbit were divided randomly into two groups. The experimental group was operated with radial cartilage incision, and no intervention was given to the control group. The ear width, length, and perimeter were noted every two weeks. Auricular surface area was noted at 4 and 22 weeks old. The repeated measures ANOVA was used to describe ears' growth trend. A paired-sample's t test is conducted to test whether there are significant differences among the variables through the SPSS25.0 software. RESULTS: The growth tendencies of the ear length, width, and perimeter were observed and analyzed. The growth curves of the experimental ears were similar to that of the control. There was no significant difference in the increased ratio of surface area among the two groups. The cartilage of the experimental ears showed no change in biomechanical properties compared to that of control group. CONCLUSION: This study shows that radial cartilage incision at an early age does not influence the growth of rabbit ear length, width, perimeter, and surface area and also does not change the biomechanical properties of the cartilage. Understanding autoimmunity to endogenous proteins is crucial in diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases. In this work, we developed a user-friendly AAgAtlas portal (http://biokb.ncpsb.org.cn/aagatlas_portal/index.php#), which can be used to search for 8045 non-redundant autoantigens (AAgs) and 47 post-translationally modified AAgs against 1073 human diseases that are prioritized by a credential score developed by multisource evidence. Using AAgAtlas, the immunogenic properties of human AAgs was systematically elucidated according to their genetic, biophysical, cytological, expression profile, and evolutionary characteristics. The results indicated that human AAgs are evolutionally conserved in protein sequence and enriched in three hydrophilic and polar amino acid residues (K, D, and E) that are located at the protein surface. AAgs are enriched in proteins that are involved in nucleic acid binding, transferase, and the cytoskeleton. Genome, transcriptome, and proteome analyses further indicated that AAb production is associated with gene variance and abnormal protein expression related to the pathological activities of different tumors. Collectively, our data outlines the hallmarks of human AAgs that facilitate the understanding of humoral autoimmunity and the identification of biomarkers of human diseases.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is an uncommon type of potentially fatal stroke. The pathophysiological mechanisms of brain injury remain unclear, which hinders the development of drugs for SAH. We aimed to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms of SAH and to elucidate the cellular and molecular biological response to SAH-induced injury. METHODS: A cross-species (human and mouse) multiomics approach combining high-throughput data and bioinformatic analysis was used to explore the key pathophysiological processes and cells involved in SAH-induced brain injury. Patient data were collected from the hospital (n = 712). SAH was established in adult male mice via endovascular perforation, and flow cytometry, a bone marrow chimera model, qPCR, and microglial depletion experiments were conducted to explore the origin and chemotaxis mechanism of the immune cells. To investigate cell effects on SAH prognosis, murine neurological function was evaluated based on a modified Garcia score, pole test, and rotarod test. RESULTS: The bioinformatics analysis confirmed that inflammatory and immune responses were the key pathophysiological processes after SAH. Significant increases in the monocyte levels were observed in both the mouse brains and the peripheral blood of patients after SAH. Ly6C-high monocytes originated in the bone marrow, and the skull bone marrow contribute a higher proportion of these monocytes than neutrophils. The mRNA level of Ccl2 was significantly upregulated after SAH and was greater in CD11b-positive than CD11b-negative cells. Microglial depletion, microglial inhibition, and CCL2 blockade reduced the numbers of Ly6C-high monocytes after SAH. With CCR2 antagonization, the neurological function of the mice exhibited a slow recovery. Three days post-SAH, the monocyte-derived dendritic cell (moDC) population had a higher proportion of TNF-α-positive cells and a lower proportion of IL-10-positive cells than the macrophage population. The ratio of moDCs to macrophages was higher on day 3 than on day 5 post-SAH. CONCLUSIONS: Inflammatory and immune responses are significantly involved in SAH-induced brain injury. Ly6C-high monocytes derived from the bone marrow, including the skull bone marrow, infiltrated into mouse brains via CCL2 secreted from microglia. Moreover, Ly6C-high monocytes alleviated neurological dysfunction after SAH.

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most frequent subtype of thyroid cancer, but 20% of cases are indeterminate (i.e., cannot be accurately diagnosed) based on preoperative cytology, which might lead to surgical removal of a normal thyroid gland. To address this concern, we performed an in-depth analysis of the serum proteomes of 26 PTC patients and 23 healthy controls using antibody microarrays and data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry (DIA-MS). We identified a total of 1091 serum proteins spanning 10-12 orders of magnitude. 166 differentially expressed proteins were identified that participate in complement activation, coagulation cascades, and platelet degranulation pathways. Furthermore, the analysis of serum proteomes before and after surgery indicated that the expression of proteins such as lactate dehydrogenase A and olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily B member 4, which participate in fibrin clot formation and extracellular matrix-receptor interaction pathways, were changed. Further analysis of the proteomes of PTC and neighboring tissues revealed integrin-mediated pathways with possible crosstalk between the tissue and circulating compartments. Among these cross-talk proteins, circulating fibronectin 1 (FN1), gelsolin (GSN) and UDP-glucose 4-epimerase (GALE) were indicated as promising biomarkers for PTC identification and validated in an independent cohort. In differentiating between patients with benign nodules or PTC, FN1 produced the best ELISA result (sensitivity = 96.89%, specificity = 91.67%). Overall, our results present proteomic landscapes of PTC before and after surgery as well as the crosstalk between tissue and the circulatory system, which is valuable to understand PTC pathology and improve PTC diagnostics in the future.

Cadmium ions (Cd2+) are highly toxic to animal and human health, especially through the drinking of Cd2+-contaminated water and eating Cd2+-contaminated rice. Therefore, accurate detection of Cd2+ in water, rice, and rice soil is urgent. In this work, two [2 + 2] lanthanide clusters of Tb2Tb2 and Eu2Eu2 were synthesized and characterized in detail. Interestingly, Tb2Tb2 is a rapid sensor for Cd2+ through luminescence "turn-off". Further studies show that Tb2Tb2 is a highly sensitive and selective sensor toward Cd2+ in water, rice supernatants, and rice soil supernatants, with a very short response time of 20 s. The limit of detection (LOD) in the above three real samples is as low as 0.0112, 1.1240, and 0.1124 ppb, respectively, which is lower than the national standards for food safety in China (GB 2762-2022). More interestingly, a portable sensing device of test paper based on Tb2Tb2 is developed with a facile method, which shows visible, highly sensitive, and selective sensing toward Cd2+ in real samples of water, rice supernatants, and rice soil supernatants. Tb2Tb2 and its sensing device of test paper are an on-site analysis sensor for potentially non-expert users, especially for people in remote rural areas.

Microtia is a congenital malformation of the external ear that often presents with other anatomical abnormalities and ipsilateral hearing loss (HL). The aim of this study was to present the correlation among important phenotypic abnormalities in microtia and their relationship with HL in a clinical population in China. In this study, a retrospective analysis was conducted on 307 patients diagnosed with microtia who visited the Department of Auricular Reconstruction of the Plastic Surgery Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, for surgical auricle reconstruction from April 2021 to April 2022. Standardized classification of ear malformations, craniofacial CT scans, and pure tone audiometric data were collected, and statistical analyses were performed using the rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. The results showed that group differences between ear malformation and variations in the development of mandible, external auditory canal (EAC), and mastoid pneumatization were statistically significant and each had a positive correlation. Among them, the correlation between development of ear and EAC was the most significant (Ρ=0.72). Besides, the severity of HL (97% were conductive) was positively correlated with ear and EAC dysplasia with or without mandibular hypoplasia. Based on the statistical analysis of the correlation between ear malformation and HL, the authors strongly recommend that facial phenotype reconstruction and hearing improvement of microtia should be considered comprehensively, regardless of whether children with microtia show HL or not, early diagnosis of audiology evaluation and appropriate intervention measures should be implemented.

BACKGROUND: Antibodies targeting programmed cell death-1(PD1) and its ligand (PDL1) have revolutionized cancer therapy. However, little is known about the preexisted anti-PD1/PDL1 autoantibodies (AAbs) distribution in multiple cancer types, nor is their potential biomarker role for anti-PD1 therapy. METHOD: Plasma anti-PD1/PDL1 AAb IgG and subclasses (IgG1-4) were detected by enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) in 190 cancer patients, covering 10 cancer types (lung, breast, esophageal, colorectal, liver, prostatic, cervical, ovarian, gastric cancers and lymphoma), the comprehensive correlation of AAbs with multiple clinical parameters was analyzed. We further tested these AAbs in 76 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) samples receiving anti-PD1 therapy, the association of AAbs level with survival was analyzed and validated in an independent cohort (n = 32). RESULTS: Anti-PD1/PDL1 AAb IgG were globally detected in 10 types of cancer patients. IgG1 and IgG2 were the major subtypes for anti-PD1/PDL1 AAbs. Correlation analysis revealed a distinct landscape between various cancer types. The random forest model indicated that IgG4 subtype was mostly associated with cancer. In discovery cohort of 76 NSCLC patients, high anti-PD1 IgG4 was associated with a reduced overall survival (OS, p = 0.019), not progression-free survival (PFS, p = 0.088). The negative association of anti-PD1 IgG4 with OS was validated in 32 NSCLC patients (p = 0.032). CONCLUSION: This study reports for the first time the distribution of preexisted anti-PD1/PDL1 AAb IgG and subclasses across 10 cancer types. Moreover, the anti-PD1 AAb IgG4 subclass was identified to associate with OS, which may serve as a potential biomarker for anti-PD1 therapeutic survival benefit in NSCLC patients.

PURPOSE: Liver transplantation (LT) remains an optimal treatment for selected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Cytokines can be obtained by minimally invasive techniques and are associated with the development of HCC. The purpose of our investigation was to explore the prognostic value of pretransplant serum inflammatory cytokine profiles in HCC patients for LT. METHODS: We detected forty inflammatory cytokines in pre-LT serum from 42 HCC patients by using an inflammation-related antibody array. A pretransplant serum inflammatory cytokine-associated risk assessment model (pre-SCRAM) was developed and was validated in an external cohort of 213 HCC patients who underwent LT and were then followed prospectively. RESULTS: The pre-LT factors independently associated with recurrence-free survival (RFS) were as follows: B-lymphocyte chemoattractant (BLC), interleukin (IL)-12p40 and maximum tumor diameter. High IL-12P40 level was associated with a significantly smaller maximum tumor diameter (p = 0.021), decreased proportion of nodules ≥ 3 (p = 0.001), lower platelet counts (p = 0.011) and lower portal vein tumor thrombus (p = 0.031). Conversely, recipients with poor BLC level had higher alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels (p = 0.016). Kaplan-Meier analyses revealed that high pre-LT BLC or IL-12p40 level was associated with superior RFS. The pre-SCRAM stratified recipients into three risk groups: high risk, intermediate risk and low risk. In the validation cohort, for patients in the high, intermediate, and low risk groups, the 3-year RFS rates were 29.3%, 58.7%, and 82.2%, respectively, the 3-year HCC-specific survival rates were 54.5%, 73.8%, and 86%, respectively, and the 3-year overall survival rates were 44.4%, 60.9%, and 79.9%, respectively. The pre-SCRAM model performed well and remained significant in optimizing the risk stratification of recurrence in patients beyond the Milan criteria or the AFP model. CONCLUSION: Pretransplant cytokine profiles can provide powerful prognostic information in the setting of LT for HCC. A pre-LT risk model incorporating cytokines showed excellent efficiency in recurrence prediction for HCC patients, which could ultimately stratify the prognosis in patients beyond the Milan criteria or the AFP model.

In this study, a nitrogen-boron codoped carbon layer, Na3V2(PO4)2F3 sample, obtained by using an ionic liquid-acrylic acid copolymer as the nitrogen-boron source was used as the cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. The optimized and modified nitrogen and boron codoped carbon layer, Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (denoted as NVPF-PCNB-20), illustrated better rate capability and cycling performance. The discharge capacities of NVPF-PCNB-20 at 0.5C and 10C were 109 and 90 mAh g-1, respectively, and the capacity retention rate was 93.2% after 100 cycles at 0.5C and 92.8% after 750 cycles at 10C. Through in situ X-ray diffraction analysis of NVPF-PCNB-20, the results show that the modified Na3V2(PO4)2F3 has excellent cycle reversibility. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images reveal that NVPF-PCNB-20 particles were finer and covered by a uniform coating. The results show that the ionic liquid-acrylic acid copolymer not only make the material dispersion more uniform but also enhance the electronic conductivity and sodium storage performance of Na3V2(PO4)3F3 effectively. This study may provide an effective way to synthesize nitrogen and boron codoped carbon-coated Na3V2(PO4)2F3 with excellent electrochemical performance.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious infection and threating the human lives in the world. The elevation of cytokines in blood is crucial to induce cytokine storm and immunosuppression in the transition of severity in COVID-19 patients. However, the comprehensive changes of serum proteins in COVID-19 patients throughout the SARS-CoV-2 infection is unknown. In this work, we developed a high-density antibody microarray and performed an in-depth proteomics analysis of serum samples collected from early COVID-19 (n = 15) and influenza (n = 13) patients. We identified a large set of differentially expressed proteins (n = 132) that participate in a landscape of inflammation and immune signaling related to the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Furthermore, the significant correlations of neutrophil and lymphocyte with the CCL2 and CXCL10 mediated cytokine signaling pathways was identified. These information are valuable for the understanding of COVID-19 pathogenesis, identification of biomarkers and development of the optimal anti-inflammation therapy.

Eutrophication in freshwater has become increasingly severe around the world, resulting in phytoplankton overgrowth and benthic algae reduction. Bivalves can change the density, dominant species and community structure of phytoplankton, increase available light levels, and provide physical habitats and growth conditions for benthic algae. The nutritional composition, density, community structure, and toxin of algae affect the growth, feeding, digestion, metabolism, immunity of bivalves in return. Interactions of bivalves and algae and effects of environmental factors on these interactions need a synthesis of studies, when using bivalves as a biomanipulation tool to control eutrophication. Whether bivalves can effectively suppress phytoplankton and promote benthic algae is related to the collective filtration and excretion capacity determined by size, species, population densities of bivalves, the quantity and quality of algae, and environmental factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and hydrodynamic. Small scale bivalve biomanipulation experiments are mostly conducted in lakes, urban ponds, and reservoirs with some success, applying in the whole ecosystem should consider more questions such as natural conditions, selection and death or reproduction of bivalves, and ecological disturbances. This review provides new considerations for technical issues such as the sustainable cultivation of bivalves and the implementation of biomanipulation in eutrophic waters.
