OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to explore the moderating role of psychological resilience in the association between workload and depressive symptoms among radiology residents during standardized residency training (SRT) in China. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional online survey was conducted among radiology residents in China. Workload was measured by working hours per week and the frequency of frontline nightwork in the last month. Resilience was assessed by the 2-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales. The hierarchical regression and simple slope analyses were performed to examine the moderating effect of resilience. RESULTS: Among 3666 radiology residents, the mean age was 27.3 years (SD = 2.6) and 58% were female. About 24.4% of the participants reported medium to severe depressive symptoms. The hierarchical regression showed that working hours (ba = 0.11, 95%CI: 0.08, 0.14) and having frontline nightwork more than once (ba = 1.22, 95%CI: 0.67, 1.78) were positively associated with depressive symptoms; the moderating effect of resilience was significant in the association of depressive symptoms with working hours (ba = - 0.02, 95%CI: - 0.03, - 0.01) and having frontline nightwork more than once (ba = - 0.28, 95%CI: - 0.49, - 0.07). The simple slope test showed the association between workload-related variables and depressive symptoms was only significant in those with a relatively lower level of resilience. CONCLUSIONS: The study found that resilience was an important modifier buffering the positive association between workload and depressive symptoms among radiology residents in China. Future medical training programs are suggested to include effective intervention components to increase personal resilience. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Heavy workload in clinical setting may pose adverse effect on mental health and job performance of radiology residents. The study investigated whether psychological resilience would mitigate the association between workload and depressive symptoms among Chinese radiology residents. KEY POINTS: • Radiology residents with a heavier workload presented a higher level of depressive symptoms in China. • Psychological resilience mitigated the positive association between workload and depressive symptoms. • The association between workload and depressive symptoms was only statistically significant in radiology residents with a relatively lower level of resilience.

Holography provides an approach to reconstructing both intensity and phase information, and has many applications for microscopic imaging, optical security, and data storage. Recently, the azimuthal Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode index, orbital angular momentum (OAM), has been implemented in holography technologies as an independent degree of freedom for high-security encryption. The radial index (RI) of LG mode, however, has not been implemented as an information carrier in holography. Here we propose and demonstrate the RI holography by using strong RI selectivity in the spatial-frequency domain. Furthermore, the LG holography is realized theoretically and experimentally with the (RI, OAM) spanning from (1, -15) to (7, 15), which leads to a 26bit LG-multiplexing hologram for high-security optical encryption. Based on LG holography, a high-capacity holographic information system can be constructed. In our experiments, a LG-multiplexing holography with a span of 217 independent LG channels has been realized, which is inaccessible at present for the OAM holography.

As an important imaging technique, holography has been realized with different physical dimensions of light, including polarization, wavelength, and time. Recently, quantum holography has been demonstrated by utilizing polarization entangled state with the advantages of high robustness and enhanced spatial resolution, comparing with classical holography. However, the polarization is only a two-dimensional degree of freedom, which greatly limits the capacity of quantum holography. Here, we propose a method to realize high-dimensional quantum holography by using high-dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement. A high-capacity OAM-encoded quantum holographic system can be obtained by multiplexing a wide range of OAM-dependent holographic images. Proof-of-principle experiments with four- and six-dimensional OAM entangled states have been implemented and verify the feasibility of our idea. Our experimental results also demonstrate that the high-dimensional quantum holography shows a high robustness to classical noise. What is more, the level of security of the holographic imaging encryption system can be greatly improved in our high-dimensional quantum holography.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic value of a multiparameter model based on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) metabolic parameters and clinical variables in differentiating nonmetastatic gallbladder cancer (GBC) from cholecystitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, 122 patients (88 GBC nonmetastatic patients and 34 cholecystitis patients) with gallbladder space-occupying lesions who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT were included. All patients received surgery and pathology, and baseline characteristics and clinical data were also collected. The metabolic parameters of 18F-FDG PET, including SUVmax (maximum standard uptake value), SUVmean (mean standard uptake value), SUVpeak (peak standard uptake value), MTV (metabolic tumour volume), TLG (total lesion glycolysis) and SUVR (tumour-to-normal liver standard uptake value ratio), were evaluated. The differential diagnostic efficacy of each independent parameter and multiparameter combination model was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The improvement in diagnostic efficacy using a combination of the above multiple parameters was evaluated by integrated discriminatory improvement (IDI), net reclassification improvement (NRI) and bootstrap test. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate clinical efficacy. RESULTS: The ROC curve showed that SUVR had the highest diagnostic ability among the 18F-FDG PET metabolic parameters (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.698; sensitivity = 0.341; specificity = 0.971; positive predictive value [PPV] = 0.968; negative predictive value [NPV] = 0.363). The combined diagnostic model of cholecystolithiasis, fever, CEA > 5 ng/ml and SUVR showed an AUC of 0.899 (sensitivity = 0.909, specificity = 0.735, PPV = 0.899, NPV = 0.758). The diagnostic efficiency of the model was improved significantly compared with SUVR. The clinical efficacy of the model was confirmed by DCA. CONCLUSIONS: The multiparameter diagnostic model composed of 18F-FDG PET metabolic parameters (SUVR) and clinical variables, including patient signs (fever), medical history (cholecystolithiasis) and laboratory examination (CEA > 5 ng/ml), has good diagnostic efficacy in the differential diagnosis of nonmetastatic GBC and cholecystitis.

New solvents are considered to be one of the effective methods to facilitate the reaction rate and lower the reaction energy barrier. However, the common method to develop a new solvent has come to a dead end. Thus, a single atom in solvent to produce a single atom solution is designed to create the breakthrough. Eight kinds of single atom solutions are prepared as new absorbents. Experiments prove the single atom in the solutions and their charge-producing effects. A density functional theory model is developed to analyze the microscale characteristics. Meanwhile, it has been applied in carbon dioxide capture. The CO2 desorption rate is intensified in the single atom solution system due to the controlled reaction energy barrier. The results show that single atom solutions produce a maximum voltage of 2.12 V and, thus, contribute to near zero energy consumption by effectively harvesting the substantial waste heat below 373 K.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming various fields, with health care, especially diagnostic specialties such as radiology, being a key but controversial battleground. However, there is limited research systematically examining the response of "human intelligence" to AI. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to comprehend radiologists' perceptions regarding AI, including their views on its potential to replace them, its usefulness, and their willingness to accept it. We examine the influence of various factors, encompassing demographic characteristics, working status, psychosocial aspects, personal experience, and contextual factors. METHODS: Between December 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021, a cross-sectional survey was completed by 3666 radiology residents in China. We used multivariable logistic regression models to examine factors and associations, reporting odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. RESULTS: In summary, radiology residents generally hold a positive attitude toward AI, with 29.90% (1096/3666) agreeing that AI may reduce the demand for radiologists, 72.80% (2669/3666) believing AI improves disease diagnosis, and 78.18% (2866/3666) feeling that radiologists should embrace AI. Several associated factors, including age, gender, education, region, eye strain, working hours, time spent on medical images, resilience, burnout, AI experience, and perceptions of residency support and stress, significantly influence AI attitudes. For instance, burnout symptoms were associated with greater concerns about AI replacement (OR 1.89; P<.001), less favorable views on AI usefulness (OR 0.77; P=.005), and reduced willingness to use AI (OR 0.71; P<.001). Moreover, after adjusting for all other factors, perceived AI replacement (OR 0.81; P<.001) and AI usefulness (OR 5.97; P<.001) were shown to significantly impact the intention to use AI. CONCLUSIONS: This study profiles radiology residents who are accepting of AI. Our comprehensive findings provide insights for a multidimensional approach to help physicians adapt to AI. Targeted policies, such as digital health care initiatives and medical education, can be developed accordingly.

Footstrike pattern has received increased attention within the running community because there is a common belief that forefoot strike running (FFS) is more advantageous (i.e., improve performance and reduce running injuries) than rearfoot strike running (RFS) in distance running. Literature reports suggest greater knee joint flexion magnitude and initial knee angle during stance in FFS compared with RFS running We examined the EMG activation of the triceps surae muscles during an acute transition from RFS to FFS strike. We tested the hypothesis that due to larger knee flexion in FFS the gastrocnemius muscles possibly decrease their EMG activity because muscle fascicles operate under unfavorable conditions. Fourteen competitive healthy middle- and long-distance runners who were habitual RFS runners ran on a treadmill at three speeds: 12, 14, and 16 km·h-1. Each running speed was performed with both FFS and RFS patterns. Lower limb kinematics in the sagittal plane and normalized electromyography (EMG) activity of medial gastrocnemius proximal, middle and distal regions, lateral gastrocnemius and soleus muscles were compared between footstrike patterns and running speeds across the stride cycle. Contrary to our expectations, the knee joint range of motion was similar in FFS and RFS running. However, the sagittal plane ankle joint motion was greater (p < 0.01) while running with FFS, resulting in a significantly greater muscle-tendon unit lengthening (p < 0.01) in FFS compared with RFS running. In addition, medial and lateral gastrocnemius showed higher EMG activity in FFS compared with RFS running in the late swing and early stance but only for a small percentage of the stride cycle. However, strike patterns and running speed failed to induce region-specific activation differences within the medial gastrocnemius muscle. Overall, well-trained RFS runners are able to change to FFS running by altering only the ankle joint kinematics without remarkably changing the EMG activity pattern.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the potential relationship between age and Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccination coverage in kindergarten children, and to provide a basis for guiding vaccination and developing new protein vaccines. METHODS: The stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select 1 830 healthy children from six kindergartens in Shunde District, Foshan City, China, and nasopharyngeal swabs were collected for the isolation and identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The logistic regression model based on restricted cubic spline was used to analyze the dose-response relationship between age and Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccination coverage. RESULTS: The rate of nasal Streptococcus pneumoniae carriage was 22.46% (411/1 830) among the kindergarten children, with the predominant serotypes of 6B, 19F, 15A, 23A, 34, and 23F. The coverage rates of 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) were 53.0% and 57.9%, respectively, and there was a significant non-linear dose-response relationship between age and the coverage rates of PCV10 and PCV13 (P<0.05), with a higher coverage rate of PCV10 (88.0%) and PCV13 (91.1%) in the children aged 2 years. There was a significant non-linear dose-response relationship between age and the coverage rates of pilus islet 1 (PI-1) and pilus islet 2 (PI-2) (P<0.05), with a lower vaccination coverage rate for PI-1 (37.7%) and PI-2 (16.1%). The coverage rates of PI-1 (13.0%-58.5%) and PI-2 (6.0%-29.4%) were lower in all age groups. The virulence genes lytA (99.5%) and ply (99.0%) associated with candidate protein vaccines showed higher vaccination coverage rates. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant non-linear dose-response relationship between the age of kindergarten children and the coverage rates of PCV10 and PCV13 serotypes, and kindergarten children aged 2 years have a relatively high coverage rate of PCV. The high prevalence of the virulence genes lytA and ply shows that they are expected to become candidate virulence factors for the development of a new generation of recombinant protein vaccines.

Drug resistance in chemotherapy has been greatly challenging for cancer treatment. Research has revealed that extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by drug-resistant cells could induce chemoresistance in susceptible cells. However, there are few ways to give direct evidence of it. Herein, we have proposed a microchip-based system to study the drug resistance of a wild-type human lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549/WT) induced by EVs derived from A549/DDP cells that are resistant to cisplatin (DDP) inherently. EVs derived from A549/DDP were proved to be the crucial factor that enhanced the resistance of A549/WT to DDP through live and dead cell staining, cell viability testing, and immunofluorescence of P-glycoprotein in the off-chip assay. Then, it was further validated that drug resistance of A549/WT cells to DDP significantly increased after being cocultured with A549/DDP cells within 96 h in the on-chip assay. These findings proved that the change of A549/WT drug resistance was caused by intercellular interaction, which was mainly mediated by EVs. In addition, we successfully reversed the EV-induced drug resistance of A549/WT cells by combining DDP and metformin, a hypoglycemic drug with low cytotoxicity when used alone. This microchip system provides a novel tool that has great potential for the investigation of cell interaction, drug resistance, and the tumor microenvironment in fundamental and clinical medicine.

MAIN CONCLUSION: For the first time it is reported that members of the nsLTP protein family could promote viral infection by inhibiting virus-induced RNA silencing. Non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) are a class of soluble proteins with low relative molecular weight and widely present in higher plants. The role of nsLTPs in biotic and abiotic stresses has been studied, but no report has shown that nsLTPs play a role in the process of viral infection. We report the function and mechanism of the classical nsLTP protein StLTP6 in viral infection. We found that StLTP6 expression was remarkably upregulated in potato infected with potato virus Y and potato virus S. The infection efficiency and virus content of StLTP6-overexpressed potato and Nicotiana benthamiana were remarkable increased. Further study found that the overexpression of StLTP6 inhibited the expression of multiple genes in the RNA silencing pathway, thereby inhibiting virus-induced RNA silencing. This result indicated that StLTP6 expression was induced during viral infection to inhibit the resistance of virus-induced RNA silencing and promote viral infection. In summary, we reported the role of StLTP6 in viral infection, broadening the biological function range of the nsLTP family and providing valuable information for the study of viral infection mechanism.

Nymphalidae is the most diverse butterfly family worldwide, with more than 6000 species, whereas the mitogenomic data of nymphalid species, especially the subfamily Danainae, is still lacking for more comprehensive systematic studies. To this contribution, the complete mitogenome of Danaus genutia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Danainae) was determined via sequencing and annotating. The mitogenome in total consists of 15,255 base pairs (bp), containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs, and a 440-bp noncoding A+T-rich region. Furthermore, phylogeny of the subfamily Danainae was reconstructed applying maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference on the basis of the mitogenomic data sets. Combined with our analysis and previous studies, the genus-level phylogenetic relationships within the subfamily Danainae are ((Tirumala + Danaus) + ((Idea + Euploea) + (Ideopsis + Parantica))). This study offers molecular information and provides a new perspective for phylogenetic research within the subfamily Danainae.

Human Y-box binding protein 1 (YB-1) is a multifunctional protein and overexpressed in many types of cancer. It specifically recognizes DNA/RNA through a cold shock domain (CSD) and regulates nucleic acid metabolism. The C-terminal extension of CSD and the phosphorylation of S102 are indispensable for YB-1 function. Until now, the roles of the C-terminal extension and phosphorylation in gene transcription and translation are still largely unknown. Here, we solved the structure of human YB-1 CSD with a C-terminal extension sequence (CSDex). The structure reveals that the extension interacts with several residues in the conventional CSD and adopts a rigid structure instead of being disordered. Either deletion of this extension or phosphorylation of S102 destabilizes the protein and results in partial unfolding. Structural characterization of CSDex in complex with a ssDNA heptamer shows that all the seven nucleotides are involved in DNA-protein interactions and the C-terminal extension provides a unique DNA binding site. Our DNA-binding study indicates that CSDex can recognize more DNA sequences than previously thought and the phosphorylation reduces its binding to ssDNA dramatically. Our results suggest that gene transcription and translation can be regulated by changing the affinity of CSDex binding to DNA and RNA through phosphorylation, respectively.

OBJECTIVES: To study the shear wave elastography (SWE) of the coracohumeral ligament (CHL) in different stages of frozen shoulder and to analyze its correlation with the visual analogue scale (VAS) score and shoulder range of motion (ROM). METHODS: Sixty-four patients with frozen shoulder were divided into three stages: stage I (freezing phase), stage II (frozen phase), and stage III (thawing phase). The SWE of the CHL of the affected and healthy sides was measured and compared in the different stages. The VAS score and ROM of the affected side were evaluated, and their correlation with the SWE of the CHL was analyzed in the different stages. RESULTS: In stage I frozen shoulder, the SWE of the CHL on the affected side was lower than that on the healthy side, while in stages II and III, the SWE on the affected side was higher (P = .001 for all). The SWE of the CHL of the affected side was different across the three stages; the SWE in stages II and III higher than that in stage I (P < .01), while the difference between stages II and III was not significant (P > .05). The SWE of the CHL of the affected side was negatively correlated with the VAS score but not with forward flexion (Ff), external rotation (Er) or internal rotation (Ir) in stage I; in stages II and III, it was positively correlated with the VAS score and negatively correlated with Ff, Er, and Ir. CONCLUSIONS: The CHL stiffness of the affected side and its correlation with the shoulder VAS score and ROM are different for different stages of frozen shoulder.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the carriage status of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S.pneumoniae) and Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) in preschool children and the influencing factors for the carriage status. METHODS: The stratified cluster sampling method was used to select 2 031 healthy children from seven kindergartens in Shunde District of Foshan in Guangdong, China. Nasal swabs were collected from all children for the isolation and identification of S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis. The carriage status of S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis was analyzed in terms of its association with demographic features and hospital- and community-related factors. RESULTS: The carriage rates of S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis were 21.81% and 52.44%, respectively among the children. The co-carriage rate of S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis was 14.87%. The correspondence analysis showed that the factors such as lower grade, non-local registered residence, living in rural areas, small living area, history of respiratory tract infection but no history of antibiotic use, allergic skin diseases, and no hospital-related exposure history were significantly associated with the co-carriage of S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis among the children (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Co-carriage of S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis can be observed in preschool children. Young age, poor living environment, a history of respiratory tract infection but no history of antibiotic use, allergic skin diseases, and no hospital-related exposure history are important risk factors for the co-carriage of S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis in preschool children.

Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii), a pathogen that exists in dry and low-moisture environments, such as powder infant formula (PIF), can enter a viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state under harsh conditions, which enables it to escape traditional detection methods and thus poses a potential public health risk. This study aimed at assessing the virulent nature of VBNC C. sakazakii. Our results showed that VBNC C. sakazakii induced intestinal inflammation in neonatal rats. However, the degree of inflammation was significantly lower than that of culturable bacteria due to decreasing endotoxin production, motility, adhesion, and invasion ability in the VBNC state. From the perspective of bacterial translocation, the numbers of C. sakazakii in the blood, liver, and spleen of rats treated with VBNC cells were in the same order of magnitude as those treated with its culturable counterpart and may lead to the same degree of bacteremia. According to the macrophage survival assays, the survival rate of VBNC C. sakazakii within macrophages was 4.7 times higher than that of culturable cells. Based on these findings, we hypothesize that VBNC C. sakazakii evaded the host immune defense system, penetrated the tissue barrier, and translocated to the bloodstream, liver, and spleen through macrophages. Thus, our study reveals that VBNC C. sakazakii could be a potential risk for infants' health.

Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) infection causes infectious synovitis and arthritis with hyperplasia of synovial cells in the chicken joint. However, its mechanism is unknown. We used primary chicken synovial fibroblast (CSF) as the research object to study the role of MS in the proliferation of MS-infected CSF and determine the mechanisms involved. Using integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses of the interaction between CSF and MS, we screened a proliferation-regulated factor, serum amyloid A (SAA), that may regulate proliferation of MS-infected CSF. SAA appears to be associated with MS-induced CSF proliferation. To study the role of SAA in MS-induced CSF proliferation, a eukaryotic expression vector overexpressing SAA and a small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting Saa were constructed to manipulate the expression of SAA. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected via cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU), or terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-dnd labeling (TUNEL) assays, respectively. Western blot analysis was used to examine the protein expression level of SAA, cyclin E1, and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2). In vitro, MS significantly promoted the proliferation of CSF and increased the production of SAA. Overexpression of SAA accelerated the proliferative ability of CSF, whereas knockdown of SAA depressed the proliferative ability of CSF. A TUNEL assay indicated that MS did not induce apoptosis. Silencing of SAA suppressed the expression of cyclin E1 and CDK2. These results suggest that MS may upregulate the expression of SAA, accelerate the cell cycle, and promote proliferation of CSF.

One immunomagnetic separation (IMS) assay based on immunomagnetic beads (IMBs) has been evaluated as a potential pretreatment tool for the separation and enrichment of target bacteria. In this study, we successfully immobilized antibodies onto magnetic bead surfaces to form IMBs through biotin and a streptavidin (SA) system to capture viable but nonculturable (VBNC) Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii) from dairy products. Various parameters that affected the capture efficiency (CE) of IMS, including the number of antibodies, IMBs dose, incubation time, magnetic separation time, and immunoreaction temperature, were systematically investigated. We further determined the optimal enrichment conditions for different dairy substrates to ensure maximum enrichment of target pathogens in the system. An IMS technique combining improved propidium monoazide (PMAxx) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) was established to detect the pathogenic VBNC C. sakazakii. The IMS-PMAxx-ddPCR method after IMBs enrichment showed higher accuracy when the VBNC C. sakazakii was under 1 Log10 copies/g. The detection limit for this method in a background of powdered infant formula (PIF) was 5.6 copies/g. In summary, the developed IMS-PMAxx-ddPCR method has great potential for the analysis and detection of VBNC bacteria in food.

The identification and interpretation of germline BRCA1/2 variants become increasingly important in breast and ovarian cancer (OC) treatment. However, there is no comprehensive analysis of the germline BRCA1/2 variants in a Chinese population. Here we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on such variants from 94 publications. A total of 2,128 BRCA1/2 variant records were extracted, including 601 from BRCA1 and 632 from BRCA2. In addition, 414, 734, 449, and 307 variants were also recorded in the BIC, ClinVar, ENIGMA, and UMD databases, respectively, and 579 variants were newly reported. Subsequent analysis showed that the overall germline BRCA1/2 pathogenic variant frequency was 5.7% and 21.8% in Chinese breast and OC, respectively. Populations with high-risk factors exhibited a higher pathogenic variant percentage. Furthermore, the variant profile in Chinese is distinct from that in other ethnic groups with no distinct founder pathogenic variants. We also tested our in-house American College of Medical Genetics-guided pathogenicity interpretation procedure for Chinese BRCA1/2 variants. Our results achieved a consistency of 91.2-97.6% (5-grade classification) or 98.4-100% (2-grade classification) with public databases. In conclusion, this study represents the first comprehensive meta-analysis of Chinese BRCA1/2 variants and validates our in-house pathogenicity interpretation procedure, thereby providing guidance for further PARP inhibitor development and companion diagnostics in the Chinese population.

It is a well appreciated fact that temperature is one of the key factors influencing the degradation of organics. Heat exchangers are a viable option that can be used to adjust the temperature in solid waste to an extent most suitable for waste degradation. This paper focuses on an experimental and theoretical investigation of the feasibility of using a water-circulating heat exchanger for thermal regulation of waste degradation. A cylindrical bioreactor with a central pipe connected to a water circulation system is devised and instrumented. The changes in temperature and gas production were monitored during the degradation of the organic component of the waste. Test results with and without thermal regulation are analyzed and compared. In addition, an analytical model is proposed to simulate the symmetrical heat transport behavior subjected to heat exchange. Heat generation due to the degradation of organics is taken into account. There was a good correlation between the analytical model prediction and the experimental data obtained from the laboratory test and field monitoring.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the features of sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) in spleen on the imaging of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From July 2006 to April 2017, 12 patients with SANT confirmed by pathology were evaluated in a retrospective study. Eight patients were with CT imaging only, 2 patients were with MR imaging only, and 2 patients were with both CT and MR. Three professional senior radiologists analyzed the imaging features on CT and MR. The main characteristic analysis included size, margin, density, signal intensity, and enhancement pattern. The significant enhancement was defined as the degree of enhancement of lesion that is higher than the surrounding spleen parenchyma, and the mild enhancement was defined as the degree of enhancement of lesion that is lower than the surrounding spleen parenchyma. RESULTS: All the 12 patients (5 men, 7 women; mean age, 45.8 years; age range, 21-62 years) presented as single lesion without special clinical symptoms. The range of lesions on diameter was from 25 to 80 mm. On CT images, 9 (90%) of 10 presented as hypodense in comparison with the parenchyma of spleen, 1 (10%) of 10 presented as isodense, and calcification was observed in 4 (40%) of 10 cases. On MR images, 4 (100%) of 4 manifested heterogeneous hypointensity on in-phase sequence and 3 (75%) of 4 performed as isointensity on out-of-phase sequence of T1-weighted. On the sequences of T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted image, 4 (100%) of 4 showed hypointensity. On CT and MR enhancement images, the number of significant enhancement and mild enhancement was 2 and 10, respectively. Seven (58%) of 12 showed progressive enhancement with the pattern of "spoke-wheel." CONCLUSIONS: Imaging features on CT and MR have a high diagnostic value for SANT, especially when CT combined with MR examination.
