RESUMO

As a model plant, mechanisms of the cytoplasmic male sterility/restoration of fertility (CMS/Rf) system in tobacco are seldom studied. Using Rf gene sequences from other Solanaceae plants and the draft genome of Nicotiana benthamiana, degenerate primers were designed to amplify the cDNA pool of N. tomentosiformis. In total, six possible Rf sequences were identified, two of which contained base-deletion mutations. The other four were intact open reading frames, of which NtomPPR5 harbored a 3-pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) motif deletion. Structure analysis revealed that they all encoded a PPR-containing protein with putative mitochondrial targeting signals at their N-terminus, and they all belong to the P subfamily. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all of the Rf-coding PPRs clustered together, and recent duplication events might have occurred in tobacco after the divergence of the species. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated that the NtomRfs were expressed in all tissues of N. tomentosiformis and (CMS) K326, although the expression levels varied with gene, organ, and developmental stage. Furthermore, the expression levels of Rf sequences in K326 were lower than those in CMS K326. The molecular basis of the CMS/Rf system in tobacco requires further investigation.

RESUMO

197 cases of paediatric pneumonia from 2 hospitals were treated by Ning Fei Pian (NFP, the Lung Easing Tablets), a proprietary Chinese medicine for antipyresis, detoxication, blood invigoration, resolution of cough and phlegm; the control group was treated by penicillin, and the therapeutic results were comparable. Examinations of microcirculation and hemorrheology in the nailbed revealed improvements by NFP, which were conducive to the recovery of pneumonia. Electron-microscopically, the tablets also produced improvements in microcirculation, relief of lung edema, and the ratio of ventilation and blood flow.

RESUMO

Infantile pneumonia has been treated successfully with Huayu decoction (HYD) in our department for more than ten years. According to the principles of Huoxue Huayu of TCM, the composition of Huayu decoction is as follows: Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Ligusticum wallichii, Spathollobus suberectus, Hirudo nipponica, Tabanus bivittatus, Paeonia suffroticosa, Astragalus membranaceus . 49 cases of infantile pneumonia were treated with HYD. The activity of erythrocyte superoxide dismutases (ESOD) was measured in these patients. The results showed that the activity of ESOD reduced in the acute stage and returned to normal in convalescence. There was significant statistical difference in activity of ESOD between the patient's group. In experimental studies, the producing of free radicals was induced by inhaling ozone in mice. It was found that HYD had the effect of scavenging free radicals in these animal models. The action of anti-oxidate of HYD was also detected in vitro. The mechanism of HYD in treating infantile pneumonia might be elucidated in some respects by these clinical and experimental studies.

RESUMO

40 cases of enterocolonic Crohn's disease resected were studied clinico-pathologically and were compared with 53 cases of enterocolonic tuberculosis. There are many symptomatic and morphological overlaps between these two diseases. Nevertheless, fissuring ulcer, widening of submucosa and cobblestone appearance are distinct diagnostic features of Crohn's disease, while caseous necrosis and/or presence of acid fast tubercle bacillus are the hallmark of tuberculosis. Antituberculous therapy may alter the histological characteristic of tuberculosis leading to scarring of the granuloma, yet caseous necrosis never completely disappears even after massive dose of antituberculous therapy. In our series, caseous necrosis in the lymph node and bowel wall was still prominent in 21 cases of enterocolonic tuberculosis having received preoperative antituberculous treatment.
