RESUMO

Sunlight exposure is known to affect mood, learning, and cognition. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that moderate UV exposure elevated blood urocanic acid (UCA), which then crossed the blood-brain barrier. Single-cell mass spectrometry and isotopic labeling revealed a novel intra-neuronal metabolic pathway converting UCA to glutamate (GLU) after UV exposure. This UV-triggered GLU synthesis promoted its packaging into synaptic vesicles and its release at glutamatergic terminals in the motor cortex and hippocampus. Related behaviors, like rotarod learning and object recognition memory, were enhanced after UV exposure. All UV-induced metabolic, electrophysiological, and behavioral effects could be reproduced by the intravenous injection of UCA and diminished by the application of inhibitor or short hairpin RNA (shRNA) against urocanase, an enzyme critical for the conversion of UCA to GLU. These findings reveal a new GLU biosynthetic pathway, which could contribute to some of the sunlight-induced neurobehavioral changes.

Fungal keratitis remains a major cause of severe visual loss in developing countries because of limited choices of therapy. The progression of fungal keratitis is a race between the innate immune system and the outgrowth of fungal conidia. Programmed necrosis (necroptosis), a type of proinflammatory cell death, has been recognized as a critical pathologic change in several diseases. However, the role and potential regulatory mechanisms of necroptosis have not been investigated in corneal diseases. The current study showed, for the first time, that fungal infection triggered significant corneal epithelial necroptosis in human/mouse/in vitro models. Moreover, a reduction in excessive reactive oxygen species release effectively prevented necroptosis. NLRP3 knockout did not affect necroptosis in vivo. In contrast, ablation of necroptosis via RIPK3 knockout significantly delayed migration and inhibited the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in macrophages, which enhanced the progression of fungal keratitis. Taking these findings together, the study indicated that overproduction of reactive oxygen species in fungal keratitis leads to significant necroptosis in the corneal epithelium. Furthermore, the necroptotic stimuli-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome serves as a driving force in host defense against fungal infection.

The detachment of biofilm caused by changes in hydraulic conditions is an essential reason for the pollution of water in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS). In this research, the effect of flow fluctuation on bulk water quality was studied. The turbidity, iron concentration, manganese concentration, the total number of bacteria, biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC), bacterial community structure, and pathogenic genes in bacteria of bulk water were analyzed. The results indicate that the detachment of biofilm caused by fluctuant flow and reverse flow (especially instant reverse flow) can lead to the pollution of water. Throughout the entire experimental period, the turbidity under fluctuant flow velocity is 4.92%∼49.44% higher than that under other flow velocities. BDOC concentration is 5.68%∼53.99% higher than that under low and high flow velocities. The flow fluctuation increases bacterial regrowth potential (BRP) and reduces the biological stability of the bulk water. Low flow velocity is more conducive to the expression of pathogenic functional genes. In the short term, the water quality under low flow velocity is the best. Nevertheless, in a long-term operation (about seven days later), the water quality under high flow velocity is better than that under other flow velocities. This research brings new knowledge about the fluctuant hydraulic conditions on the bulk water quality within the DWDS and provides data support for stable drinking water distribution.

Benzene is the typical volatile organic compound (VOC) of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which harms human health and the environment. Due to the stability of their aromatic structure, the catalytic oxidation of benzene rings in an environment without an external energy input is difficult. In this study, the efficient degradation of benzene at room temperature was achieved by constructing Ag and Ni bimetallic active site catalysts (AgNi/BCN) supported on boron-carbon-nitrogen aerogel. The atomic-scale Ag and Ni are uniformly dispersed on the catalyst surface and form Ag/Ni-C/N bonds with C and N, which were conducive to the catalytic oxidation of benzene at room temperature. Further catalytic reaction mechanisms indicate that benzene reacted with ·OH to produce R·, which reacted with O2 to regenerate ·OH. Under the strong oxidation of ·OH, benzene was oxidized to form alcohols, carboxylic acids, and eventually CO2 and H2O. This study not only significantly reduces the energy consumption of VOC catalytic oxidation, but also improves the safety of VOC treatment, providing new ideas for the low energy consumption and green development of VOC treatment.

A series of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers P4VP(CN-DBE)x , where x is the molar ratio of cyanostilbene (CN-DBE) to poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) repeating unit, was synthesized based on the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between P4VP and CN-DBE. Their luminescent property, liquid crystalline structure and photo-thermo-electric property were elucidated using photoluminescence spectra, X-ray diffraction, thermal imaging and thermoelectric experiments. With the increase of x, the supramolecular system can be changed from lamellar structure to hexagonal columnar structure. Moreover, the P4VP(CN-DBE)x polymer with columnar structure exhibits more efficient photothermal effect. The temperature of P4VP(CN-DBE)0.6 can rise to 130 °C within 10 s under the irradiation of ultraviolet lamp. In addition, the supramolecular system possesses unique photo-thermo-electric conversion ability, and 25 mA current can be detected in the circuit coupled with the thermoelectric module. This work broadens the potential applications of hydrogen-bonded polymer, and provides a simple and facile strategy to prepare liquid crystalline polymers with photo-thermo-electric property.

Engineering anthocyanin biosynthesis in herbs could provide health-promoting foods for improving human health. Rehmannia glutinosa is a popular medicinal herb in Asia, and was a health food for the emperors of the Han Dynasty (59 B.C.). In this study, we revealed the differences in anthocyanin composition and content between three Rehmannia species. On the 250, 235 and 206 identified MYBs in the respective species, six could regulate anthocyanin biosynthesis by activating the ANTHOCYANIDIN SYNTHASE (ANS) gene expression. Permanent overexpression of the Rehmannia MYB genes in tobacco strongly promoted anthocyanin content and expression levels of NtANS and other genes. A red appearance of leaves and tuberous/roots was observed, and the total anthocyanin content and the cyanidin-3-O-glucoside content were significantly higher in the lines overexpressing RgMYB41, RgMYB42, and RgMYB43 from R. glutinosa, as well as RcMYB1 and RcMYB3 in R. chingii and RhMYB1 from R. henryi plants. Knocking out of RcMYB3 by CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing resulted in the discoloration of the R. chingii corolla lobes, and decreased the content of anthocyanin. R. glutinosa overexpressing RcMYB3 displayed a distinct purple color in the whole plants, and the antioxidant activity of the transgenic plants was significantly enhanced compared to WT. These results indicate that Rehmannia MYBs can be used to engineer anthocyanin biosynthesis in herbs to improve their additional value, such as increased antioxidant contents.

Objective: To investigate the clinical impact of dietary intervention in combination with bismuth potassium citrate in the management of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) caused by Helicobacter pylori. Methods: From April 2019 to October 2022, 160 patients with newly identified Helicobacter pylori-related CAG were treated at our facility. They were split into two groups at random: the bismuth potassium citrate medication group (n = 80) and the diet intervention + bismuth potassium citrate experimental groups (n = 80). The bismuth potassium citrate treatment group was given bismuth potassium citrate capsule treatment only, and the diet intervention + bismuth potassium citrate treatment group was given diet intervention based on bismuth potassium citrate capsule. The diet intervention score, symptom score, and pathological score of the two groups were observed at baseline and after treatment, and the relationship between dietary intervention and symptoms and pathology of Helicobacter pylori-related CAG was analyzed. Results: During the baseline period, there was no discernible difference in the diet intervention score, symptom score, or pathology score between the two groups (P > .05); after the diet intervention combination treatment, the diet intervention score, diet intervention + bismuth potassium citrate experimental groups symptom score, and pathology score were considerably lower than those in the bismuth potassium citrate treated group (P < .05). Conclusions: Dietary intervention combined with bismuth potassium citrate exhibited more effective treatment than bismuth potassium citrate-only treatment in Helicobacter pylori-related CAG, which hinted us proper diet has a positive impact on improving the therapeutic efficacy of bismuth potassium citrate.

Objective: To compare the laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) technique with conventional laparoscopy in cystectomy for benign ovarian cysts. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was performed at Yixing People's Hospital from April 2020 until December 2021. Results: Thirty-seven patients using the LESS technique were compared with a control group of 45 patients who underwent a traditional laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy. There was no statistically significant difference in the perioperative hemoglobin level changes, cyst rupture rate, postoperative recovery of exhausting time, or pain score at 24 hours after surgery between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). The mean operating time was significantly longer in the LESS group than that of the control group (88.38 ± 30.57 minutes vs 59.44 ± 24.22 minutes; P = 0.001). However, the length of postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter in the LESS group (3.70 ± 0.57 days vs 4.38 ± 0.86 days; P = 0.001). In addition, total hospitalization expenses were higher in the LESS group (14,709.78 ± 1618.63 yuan vs 12,676.73 ± 1411.78 yuan; P = .001) and the satisfaction score was also significantly higher in the LESS group (z = -2.272; P = 0.023). After a follow-up time of 12 to 24 months, no patient in either group showed wound infection, umbilical hernia, or recurrent cysts. Conclusions: The LESS technique for benign ovarian cystectomy is safe, feasible, and equally effective compared with the multiport laparoscopic oophorocystectomy. Although it currently costs more, patients with benign ovarian cysts are highly satisfied with the LESS technique.

Thioredoxins (Trxs) and glutaredoxins (Grxs) are the two major thiol-dependent reductases, participating in many important cellular events such as defense against oxidative stress, DNA synthesis and repair. Both Trxs and Grxs have diverse disulfide-containing substrates in the cells to exert their activities, with overlapping functions. Specific methods for measuring the intracellular overall activities of Trxs and Grxs are still lacking. Here we find that TRFS-green, a disulfide containing fluorescent probe which was used to detect thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) in mammalian cells, is a substrate of bacterial Trxs and Grxs, but not a substrate of bacterial TrxR and GSH. This property made TRFS-green work as a probe to measure the overall activities of Trxs and Grxs in bacterial cells. Using various E. coli Trx or Grx null mutant strains, the contribution of different Trxs and Grxs to cellular redox regulation has been clarified, judged by the reducibility towards TRFS-green. E. coli Grx2 and Grx3 unexpectedly exhibited higher activity in reducing the disulfide probe than the other redoxins. In addition, the bacterial disulfide reductase activity was detected to be affected in the ofloxacin bactericidal process. These results show that TRFS-green may be a useful tool for investigating bacterial redox regulation and demonstrating the critical role of E. coli Grxs in maintaining the bacterial intracellular redox balance.

Emotion recognition based on electroencephalography (EEG) has attracted high interest in fields such as health care, user experience evaluation, and human-computer interaction (HCI), as it plays an important role in human daily life. Although various approaches have been proposed to detect emotion states in previous studies, there is still a need to further study the dynamic changes of EEG in different emotions to detect emotion states accurately. Entropy-based features have been proved to be effective in mining the complexity information in EEG in many areas. However, different entropy features vary in revealing the implicit information of EEG. To improve system reliability, in this paper, we propose a framework for EEG-based cross-subject emotion recognition using fused entropy features and a Bidirectional Long Short-term Memory (BiLSTM) network. Features including approximate entropy (AE), fuzzy entropy (FE), Rényi entropy (RE), differential entropy (DE), and multi-scale entropy (MSE) are first calculated to study dynamic emotional information. Then, we train a BiLSTM classifier with the inputs of entropy features to identify different emotions. Our results show that MSE of EEG is more efficient than other single-entropy features in recognizing emotions. The performance of BiLSTM is further improved with an accuracy of 70.05% using fused entropy features compared with that of single-type feature.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of melatonin on the corneal epithelium in dry eye disease(DED) and explore its underlying mechanism. Human corneal epithelial(HCE) cells was exposure to t-butylhydroperoxide(tBH), C57BL/6 mice were injected of subcutaneous scopolamine to imitate DED. Melatonin was used both in vivo and in vitro. Cell viability was detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and Lactate Dehydrogenase Leakage. The change of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry. Western blot assays and immunofluorescence were carried out to measure protein changes. mRNA expression was investigated by RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and quantitative real-time PCR. The change of autophagic flux were observed through mCherry-GFP-LC3 transfection and electron microscopy(TEM). Clinical parameters of corneal epithelium defects, conjunctival goblet cells, tear volume, and level of ocular surface inflammation was recorded. Melatonin was able to reduce excessive ROS production and maintain mitochondrial function. TEM assay found melatonin rescued impaired autophagic flux under tBH. Moreover, melatonin significantly preserved cell viability, abolished LDH release, and decreased apoptosis. RNA-Seq indicated that melatonin greatly activating hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression. Interestingly, HO-1 ablation largely attenuated its protective effects. Besides, in dry eye mouse model, intraperitoneal injection of melatonin showed greatly improved clinical parameters, inhibited activated NLRP3 inflammation cascade, and increased density of goblet cells and tear volume. Thus, melatonin protects corneal epithelial cells from oxidative damage, maintain normal level of autophagy, and reduce inflammation via trigging HO-1 expression in DED.

BACKGROUND: Reliable quantification of the relationship between hypertension and diabetes risk is limited, especially among Chinese people. We aimed to investigate the association between hypertension and the risk of diabetes in a large cohort of the Chinese population. METHODS: This was a retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study among 211,809 Chinese adults without diabetes at baseline between 2010 and 2016. The target independent and dependent variable were hypertension at baseline and incident diabetes during follow-up respectively. The propensity score matching using a non-parsimonious multivariable logistic regression was conducted to balance the confounders between 28,711 hypertensive patients and 28,711 non-hypertensive participants. The doubly robust estimation method was used to investigate the association between hypertension and diabetes. RESULTS: In the propensity-score matching cohort, diabetes risk increased by 11.0% among hypertensive patients (HR = 1.110, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.031-1.195, P = 0.00539). And diabetes risk dropped to 8.3% among hypertensive subjects after adjusting for the propensity score (HR = 1.083, 95%CI: 1.006-1.166, P = 0.03367). Compared to non-hypertensive participants with low propensity score, the risk of incident diabetes increased by 2.646 times among hypertensive patients with high propensity score (HR = 3.646, 95%CI: 2.635-5.045, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Hypertension was associated with an 11.0% increase in the risk of developing diabetes in Chinese adults. And the figure dropped to 8.3% after adjusting the propensity score. Additionally, compared to non-hypertensive participants with low propensity scores, the risk of incident diabetes increased by 2.646 times among hypertensive patients with high propensity scores.

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNAs have been acknowledged as the crucial regulators in the progression of human cancers, including gastric cancer (GC). Small nucleolar RNA host gene 10 (SNHG10) has been identified as an oncogene in several cancer types. Nonetheless, it is unclear whether SNHG10 exerts functions in GC cells. AIMS: The aims of the current study were to explore the function and underlying mechanism of SNHG10 in GC. METHODS: The expression levels of SNHG10, miR-495-3p and catenin beta 1 (CTNNB1) were detected by RT-qPCR. Loss-of-function assays, including CCK-8, colony formation assay, flow cytometry analysis and transwell assays, were conducted to verify the effect of SHNG10 on the proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion of GC cells. Mechanism experiments were performed to identify the downstream molecular mechanism of SNHG10. RESULTS: SNHG10 was expressed at a high level in GC cells. Knockdown of SNHG10 inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of GC cells. Silencing of SNHG10 led to the downregulation of core factors of WNT signaling pathway. Knockdown of SNHG10 could decline the expression of CTNNB1 through sequestering miR-495-3p. CONCLUSIONS: SNHG10 promotes the procession of GC through targeting miR-495-3p/CTNNB1 and activating WNT signaling pathway.

KEY MESSAGE: Here, we cloned a phytoene desaturase (PDS) gene from Rehmannia glutinosa, and realized RgPDS1 knock out in R. glutinosa resulted in the generation of albino plants. Rehmannia glutinosa is a highly important traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with specific pharmacology and economic value. R. glutinosa is a tetraploid plant, to date, no report has been published on gene editing of R. glutinosa. In this study, we combined the transcriptome database of R. glutinosa and the reported phytoene desaturase (PDS) gene sequences to obtain the PDS gene of R. glutinosa. Then, the PDS gene was used as a marker gene to verify the applicability and gene editing efficiency of the CRISPR/Cas9 system in R. glutinosa. The constructed CRISPR/Cas9 system was mediated by Agrobacterium to genetically transform into R. glutinosa, and successfully regenerated fully albino and chimeric albino plants. The next-generation sequencing (NGS) confirmed that the albino phenotype was indeed caused by RgPDS gene target site editing, and it was found that base deletion was more common than insertion or replacement. Our results revealed that zCas9 has a high editing efficiency on the R. glutinosa genome. This research lays a foundation for further use of gene editing technology to study the molecular functions of genes, create excellent germplasm, accelerate domestication, and improve the yield and quality of R. glutinosa.

The present study analyzed the effects of planting density on the development, quality, and gene transcription characte-ristics of Rehmannia glutinosa using 85-5 and J9 as materials with three planting densities of 5 000, 25 000, and 50 000 plants/Mu(1 Mu≈667 m~2). The agronomic characteristics of leaves and tuberous roots, the content of catalpol and acteoside, and the changes of gene expression were determined. The results showed that the leaf size, the diameter of tuberous root, leaf biomass, tuberous root number, and tuberous root biomass per plant at low density were significantly higher than those of medium and high densities. The content of catalpol and acteoside in leaves was higher at high density. The content of catalpol in tuberous roots was higher at low density, and the change trend was similar to that in leaves, while the content of acteoside in tuberous roots was higher at high density. Transcriptome analysis found that about 1/2 of the expansin genes could change regularly in response to density treatment, which was rela-ted to the development of tuberous roots. The change trend of the gene expression of multiple catalytic enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of catalpol and acteoside was consistent with that of their content, which was presumedly involved in the accumulation and regulation of density-responsive medicinal components. Based on the analysis of the development, medicinal components, and gene expression characteristics of R. glutinosa at different densities, this study is expected to provide an important basis for regulating the quality and yield of medicinal materials of R. glutinosa by managing the planting density.

RESUMO

Benzothiazoles have played an important role in the field of biochemistry and medicinal chemistry due to their highly pharmaceutical and biological activity. The development of synthetic processes is undoubtedly one of the most significant problems facing researchers. In this review paper, we provided recent advances in the synthesis of benzothiazole compounds related to green chemistry from condensation of 2-aminobenzenethiol with aldehydes/ketones/acids/acyl chlorides and the cyclization of thioamide or carbon dioxide (CO2) as raw materials, and the future development trend and prospect of the synthesis of benzothiazoles were anticipated.

BACKGROUND: Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) has a detrimental impact on the myocardium with left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction. Obesity is a risk factor of type 2 diabetes. To understand the relationships between HbA1c, body mass index (BMI) and LV diastolic dysfunction, we performed this interaction analysis in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Total 925 type 2 diabetes patients were selected from the patients who were diagnosed and treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University. Patients' BMI levels were defined as normal (BMI < 24 kg/m2) and overweight /obese (BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2). Patients' HbA1c levels were grouped as HbA1c ≥ 9%、7% ≤ HbA1c < 9% and HbA1c < 7%. Logistic regression, stratified, interaction analysis, multivariate Cox regression and curve fitting analysis were performed to investigate the correlations and interactions between HbA1c and BMI with LV diastolic dysfunction. RESULTS: The BMI levels were significantly associated with LV diastolic dysfunction in the patients with type 2 diabetes [adjusted model: 1.12 (1.05, 1.20), P = 0.001]. While HbA1c levels had association with LV diastolic dysfunction only in normal BMI group patients [adjusted model: 1.14 (1.01, 1.30), P = 0.0394] and curve correlation was observed. There was a significant interaction between BMI and HbA1c to affect LV diastolic dysfunction (P = 0.0335). Cox regression model analysis showed that the risk of LV diastolic dysfunction was a U type correlation with HbA1c levels in the normal weight group and the turning point was HbA1c at 10%. HbA1c level was not found to have a significant association with LV diastolic dysfunction in overweight/obese group. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with type 2 diabetes, correlation between LV diastolic dysfunction and HbA1c was interactively affected by BMI. Glycemic control is beneficial to the heart function in normal body weight patients. For overweight/obese patients, the risk of LV diastolic dysfunction was not determined by the HbA1c level, indicating it may be affected by other confounding factors.

BACKGROUND: Hyperuricemia and gout have become increasingly prevalent in China. Allopurinol is an effective urate-lowering therapy, but it has severe side effects. HLA-B*5801 is highly associated with the allopurinol-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective report, we had genotyped HLA-B*5801 in 253 cases of hyperuricemia and gout patients in a Han population in Shenzhen and analyzed the clinical management of medications. RESULTS: We found 30 carriers of the HLA-B*5801 allele in 253 cases of hyperuricemia or gout patients in the population (11.9%). Allopurinol was prescribed in both HLA-B*5801-positive and HLA-B*5801-negative groups. The evaluation of four models with or without genetic screening and management of allopurinol or febuxostat indicated that the HLA-B*5801 screening had significant cost benefit for clinical management. CONCLUSION: For appropriate management and cost-effectiveness, the HLA-B*5801 allele should be screened in all patients with hyperuricemia and gout in the Chinese population.

Rehmannia glutinosa L., a perennial plant of Scrophulariaceae, is one of the most commonly used herbs in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that have been widely cultivated in China. However, to date, the biosynthetic pathway of its two quality-control components, catalpol and acteoside, are only partially elucidated and the mechanism for their tissue-specific accumulation remains unknown. To facilitate the basic understanding of the key genes and transcriptional regulators involved in the biosynthesis of catalpol and acteoside, transcriptome sequencing of radial striation (RS) and non-radial striation (nRS) from four R. glutinosa cultivars was performed. A total of 715,158,202 (~107.27 Gb) high quality reads obtained using paired-end Illumina sequencing were de novo assembled into 150,405 transcripts. Functional annotation with multiple public databases identified 155 and 223 unigenes involved in catalpol and acteoside biosynthesis, together with 325 UGTs, and important transcription factor (TF) families. Comparative analysis of the transcriptomes identified 362 unigenes, found to be differentially expressed in all RS vs. nRS comparisons, with 143 upregulated unigenes, including those encoding enzymes of the catalpol and acteoside biosynthetic pathway, such as geranyl diphosphate synthase (RgGPPS), geraniol 8-hydroxylase (RgG10H), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (RgPAL). Other differentially expressed unigenes predicted to be related to catalpol and acteoside biosynthesis fall into UDP-dependent glycosyltransferases (UGTs), as well as transcription factors. In addition, 16 differentially expressed genes were selectively confirmed by real-time PCR. In conclusion, a large unigene dataset of R. glutinosa generated in the current study will serve as a resource for the identification of potential candidate genes for investigation of the tuberous root development and biosynthesis of active components.

Limits to sustained energy intake (SusEI) during lactation are important because they provide an upper boundary below which females must trade off competing physiological activities. To date, SusEI is thought to be limited either by the capacity of the mammary glands to produce milk (the peripheral limitation hypothesis) or by a female's ability to dissipate body heat (the heat dissipation hypothesis). In the present study, we examined the effects of litter size and ambient temperature on a set of physiological, behavioral and morphological indicators of SusEI and reproductive performance in lactating Swiss mice. Our results indicate that energy input, energy output and mammary gland mass increased with litter size, whereas pup body mass and survival rate decreased. The body temperature increased significantly, while food intake (18 g day-1 at 21°C versus 10 g day-1 at 30°C), thermal conductance (lower by 20-27% at 30°C than 21°C), litter mass and milk energy output decreased significantly in the females raising a large litter size at 30°C compared with those at 21°C. Furthermore, an interaction between ambient temperature and litter size affected females' energy budget, imposing strong constraints on SusEI. Together, our data suggest that the limitation may be caused by both mammary glands and heat dissipation, i.e. peripheral limitation is dominant at room temperature, but heat dissipation is more significant at warm temperatures. Further, the level of the heat dissipation limits may be temperature dependent, shifting down with increasing temperature.
