BACKGROUND: Myocardial injury is an important pediatric diagnosis. Establishing normative data from a representative pediatric sample is vital to provide accurate upper reference limits (URLs) for defining myocardial injury using high-sensitivity cardiac troponin. METHODS: Among participants 1 to 18 years of age in the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we measured high-sensitivity troponin T using one assay (Roche) and high-sensitivity troponin I using 3 assays (Abbott, Siemens, and Ortho). In a strictly defined healthy subgroup, we estimated 97.5th and 99th percentile URLs for each assay using the recommended nonparametric method. RESULTS: Of 5695 pediatric participants, 4029 met criteria for the healthy subgroup (50% males; mean age 12.6 years). Our 99th percentile URL estimates for all 4 high-sensitivity troponin assays among children and adolescents were lower than the manufacturer-reported URLs (derived from adults). The 99th percentile URLs (95% CI) were 15 ng/L (95% CI, 12-17) for high-sensitivity troponin T, 16 ng/L (95% CI, 12-19) for high-sensitivity troponin I with the Abbott assay, 38 ng/L (95% CI, 25-46) for high-sensitivity troponin I with the Siemens assay, and 7 ng/L (95% CI, 5, 12) for high-sensitivity troponin I with the Ortho assay. The 95% CIs for age-, sex-, and race and ethnicity-specific 99th percentile URLs overlapped. However, the 97.5th percentile URL for each assay was measured with superior statistical precision (ie, tighter 95% CIs) and demonstrated differences by sex. For male compared with female children and adolescents, 97.5th percentile URLs were 11 ng/L (95% CI, 10-12) versus 6 ng/L (95% CI, 6-7) for high-sensitivity troponin T, 9 ng/L (95% CI, 7-10) versus 5 ng/L (95% CI, 4-6) for high-sensitivity troponin I with the Abbott assay, 21 ng/L (95% CI, 18-25) versus 11 ng/L (95% CI, 9-13) for high-sensitivity troponin I with the Siemens assay, and 4 ng/L (95% CI, 3-5) versus 2 ng/L (95% CI, 1-3) for high-sensitivity troponin I with the Ortho assay. In contrast to the 99th percentiles, the point estimates of 97.5th percentile pediatric URLs for high-sensitivity troponin were also much more stable to differences in the analytic approaches taken to estimate URLs. CONCLUSIONS: Because myocardial infarction is rare in children and adolescents, the use of statistically more precise and reliable sex-specific 97.5th percentile high-sensitivity troponin URLs might be considered to define pediatric myocardial injury.

BACKGROUND: Amino acids are crucial for nutrition and metabolism, regulating metabolic pathways and activities vital to organismal health and stability. Glycine and histidine act as potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents; however, limited knowledge exists regarding the associations between these amino acids and hyperlipidemia and hypertension. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between dietary glycine and histidine, and hyperlipidemia and hypertension. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study evaluated the influence of dietary glycine and histidine, as well as their combined effect, on hyperlipidemia and hypertension in Chinese adults participating in the Nutrition Health Atlas Project (NHAP). General characteristics were acquired using a verified Internet-based Dietary Questionnaire for the Chinese. Binary logistic regression, along with gender, age groups, and median energy intake subgroup analyses, was employed to investigate the associations between dietary glycine and histidine and hyperlipidemia and hypertension. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to assess the impact of excluding individuals who smoke and consume alcohol on the results. RESULTS: Based on the study's findings, 418 out of 1091 cases had hyperlipidemia, whereas 673 had hypertension. A significant inverse relationship was found between dietary glycine, histidine, and glycine + histidine and hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Compared with the 1st and 2nd tertiles, the multivariable-adjusted odd ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals) (CIs) of the 3rd tertile of dietary glycine for hyperlipidemia and hypertension were 0.64 (0.49-0.84) (p < 0.01) and 0.70 (0.56-0.88) (p < 0.001); histidine was 0.63 (0.49-0.82) (p < 0.01) and 0.80 (0.64-0.99) (p < 0.01); and glycine + histidine was 0.64 (0.49-0.83) (p < 0.01) and 0.74 (0.59-0.92) (p < 0.001), respectively. High glycine and high histidine (HGHH) intake were negatively associated with hyperlipidemia and hypertension OR (95% CIs) were: 0.71 (0.58-0.88) (p < 0.01) and 0.73 (0.61-0.87) (p < 0.01), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary glycine and histidine, as well as their HGHH group, revealed an inverse relationship with hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Further investigations are needed to validate these findings.

BACKGROUND: The workplace can play an important role in shaping the eating behaviors of U.S. adults. Unfortunately, foods obtained in the workplace tend to be low in nutritional quality. Questions remain about the best way to approach the promotion of healthy food purchases among employees and to what extent health promotion activities should be tailored to the demographic characteristics of the employees. The purpose of this study was to (1) assess the nutritional quality of lunchtime meal purchases by employees in cafeterias of a large organization, (2) examine associations between lunchtime meal quality selection and the demographic characteristics of employees, and (3) determine the healthfulness of foods and beverages offered in the cafeterias of this organization. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using secondary data from a food labeling study implemented in three worksite cafeterias. Demographic data was collected via surveys and meal data was collected using a photo capture system for 378 participants. The Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) was used to determine meal quality and a total score for the menu of options available in the cafeterias during the study period. Summary statistics were generated, and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the HEI-2015 scores between groups. RESULTS: The mean HEI-2015 total score for the menu items offered (n = 1,229) in the cafeteria during the study period was 63.1 (SD = 1.83). The mean HEI-2015 score for individual lunchtime meal observations (n = 378) was 47.1 (SD = 6.8). In general, HEI-2015 total scores were higher for non-smokers, individuals who self-identified as Asian, had higher physical activity levels, scored higher on numeracy and literacy assessments, and reported higher education levels, incomes, and health status. CONCLUSIONS: The overall HEI-2015 scores indicate that the menu of options offered in the cafeterias and individual meal selections did not align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and there were significant associations between average lunchtime meal quality scores and several demographic characteristics. These results suggest that healthy eating promotion activities in workplaces may need to be tailored to the demographic characteristics of the employees, and efforts to improve the food environment in the workplace could improve meal quality for all employees.

OBJECTIVE: Design and validation a photographic atlas of Peruvian foods to evaluate the food consumption of children from 6 to 12 months of age. METHODS: Quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. 12 food groups were established according to their nutrient content. The atlas is designed to be applied to mothers, fathers, or caregivers of children from 6 to 12 months of age. The methodology was divided into four stages: i) selection of the food list, regional recipe books from Peru were reviewed, then interviews with mothers of children in the age range were verified for the final selection of the food list; ii) preparation and weighing of food, utensils were used to establish home measurements and with the established weight the macro and micronutrients were calculated with tables of composition of Peruvian foods; iii) development of the photographic session, a professional photographer with previous experience in similar works was used; and iv) expert validation, with the participation of 5 nutritionists with experience in infant feeding. RESULTS: The proposed atlas includes 57 foods with a total of 91 photographs. The content validity coefficient according to food category and in total obtained an assessment of 0.75 (Cohen's kappa coefficient), which gives it acceptable validity and agreement. CONCLUSIONS: The photographic atlas of food portions for infant feeding in Peru is a practical, reliable, and culturally appropriate visual tool to help estimate the amount of food consumed by this population, which will facilitate the estimation of food intake.

Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) plays a crucial role in early childhood growth and development. This study summarizes recent IYCF practices in multiple refugee settings and compares them to those in the host countries. We analyzed 203 surveys conducted among refugees residing in 15 countries and 120 unique sites and assessed eight IYCF indicators available from those surveys. A total of 146 surveys were conducted in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) and 50 in Western and Central Africa (WCA) regions. The median prevalence across surveys of all four indicators describing intake of breast milk was relatively high: 96.6% for ever breastfed, 81.2% for initiation of breastfeeding within 1 h of birth, 76.9% for exclusive breastfeeding 0-5 months, and 75.0% for continued breastfeeding 12-23 months. The median prevalence of early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding was markedly higher in ESA than in WCA (85.0% vs. 37.5% and 83.5% vs. 56.1%, respectively). Conversely, the overall median prevalence of timely introduction of solid and semisolid foods and flesh food consumption was low: 51.8% and 16.1%, respectively. Flesh food consumption was higher in WCA than in ESA (27.4% vs. 11.6%). The median prevalence of mixed milk feeding at 0-5 months and bottle feeding was very low: 2.4% and 3.8%, respectively. Indicators describing breast milk intake were generally either similar or higher in refugees than in the host country populations, whereas the other indicators were generally higher in the host populations than in refugees. The low prevalence of timely introduction of solids and of flesh food consumption in refugees is concerning and requires substantial improvement.

BACKGROUND: The American Heart Association recently published an updated algorithm for quantifying cardiovascular health (CVH)-the Life's Essential 8 score. We quantified US levels of CVH using the new score. METHODS: We included individuals ages 2 through 79 years (not pregnant or institutionalized) who were free of cardiovascular disease from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys in 2013 through 2018. For all participants, we calculated the overall CVH score (range, 0 [lowest] to 100 [highest]), as well as the score for each component of diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep duration, body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure, using published American Heart Association definitions. Sample weights and design were incorporated in calculating prevalence estimates and standard errors using standard survey procedures. CVH scores were assessed across strata of age, sex, race and ethnicity, family income, and depression. RESULTS: There were 23 409 participants, representing 201 728 000 adults and 74 435 000 children. The overall mean CVH score was 64.7 (95% CI, 63.9-65.6) among adults using all 8 metrics and 65.5 (95% CI, 64.4-66.6) for the 3 metrics available (diet, physical activity, and body mass index) among children and adolescents ages 2 through 19 years. For adults, there were significant differences in mean overall CVH scores by sex (women, 67.0; men, 62.5), age (range of mean values, 62.2-68.7), and racial and ethnic group (range, 59.7-68.5). Mean scores were lowest for diet, physical activity, and body mass index metrics. There were large differences in mean scores across demographic groups for diet (range, 23.8-47.7), nicotine exposure (range, 63.1-85.0), blood glucose (range, 65.7-88.1), and blood pressure (range, 49.5-84.0). In children, diet scores were low (mean 40.6) and were progressively lower in higher age groups (from 61.1 at ages 2 through 5 to 28.5 at ages 12 through 19); large differences were also noted in mean physical activity (range, 63.1-88.3) and body mass index (range, 74.4-89.4) scores by sociodemographic group. CONCLUSIONS: The new Life's Essential 8 score helps identify large group and individual differences in CVH. Overall CVH in the US population remains well below optimal levels and there are both broad and targeted opportunities to monitor, preserve, and improve CVH across the life course in individuals and the population.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is an important social determinant of health, but there is limited understanding of its relationship with adult oral health. This study examined the associations between food insecurity and dental diseases (caries and periodontitis) among middle-aged and older adults in the United States and South Korea. METHODS: This study focused on middle-aged (40-59 years) and older adults (>59 years) who participated in the 2011-2016 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) or the 2013-2015 South Korean NHANES. The exposure was food insecurity severity (food secure/early-stage food insecurity/middle-stage or severe food insecurity) assessed using the 18-item US Household Food Security Survey Module. The two outcomes were any untreated tooth decay and periodontitis measured using the Modified Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs. Covariate-adjusted odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were generated using multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS: Middle or severe food insecurity was associated with significantly higher odds of having untreated tooth decay than no food insecurity, but only among middle-aged adults in the United States (OR: 1.4, 95% CI 1.2, 1.9; P = .037) and Korea (OR = 1.8; 95% CI:1.0, 3.2; P = .036) and older adults in the United States (OR: 2.6, 95% CI 1.7, 4.0; P < .001). The associations between food insecurity and periodontitis were inconsistent across age group and country. CONCLUSION: Differing cultural norms and access to dental services in the United States and South Korea may influence the relationship between food insecurity and oral health. Future research should explore how addressing food insecurity could help to promote the oral health of middle-aged and older adults in diverse sociocultural contexts.

This study aimed to compare fruits and vegetables (FV), and carbonated soft drink (CSD) consumption among adolescents from seventy-four countries, according to macroeconomic indicators. This is an ecological study, developed with countries evaluated through the Global School-based Student Health Survey (2003-2014) and the National School Health Survey (PeNSE-Brazil, 2015). The percentages of students in each country who consumed CSD and FV daily and their association with the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Gross National Income per capita (GNIpc) were assessed. Scatter plots were constructed for each marker, and a multilevel model was tested to consider the effects of region in the associations. The overall prevalence of daily CSD consumption was 54·1 %. CSD consumption was positively associated with HDI and GNIpc through multilevel models, and Central and South America showed a considerable higher consumption compared with other regions. Overall, FV daily consumption was 67·9 % and 74·6 %, respectively, and no associations with macroeconomic indicators were found. The study shows concerning rates of CSD consumption among adolescents, and a trend of increased consumption with the improvement of the country's development and GNIpc. This points for the importance of public policies that regulate food and beverage industries to reduce CSD consumption and related co-morbidities among adolescents.

AIMS: This study aimed to determine the impact of pregnancy and pregnancy-associated characteristics on nocturia. METHODS: Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2005/06 to 2017/18, we analyzed women who completed the "Reproductive Health" and "Kidney Conditions-Urology" questionnaires by sorting them into three groups: nulligravida, previously pregnant (nonpregnant with prior pregnancies), and currently pregnant. After excluding patients with pre-existing conditions impacting nocturia or with incomplete data, we weighed and matched the groups for age, race, BMI, and number of pregnancies. The relationships of nocturia to pregnancy in all groups and pregnancy-associated characteristics (gestational diabetes mellitus [GDM], history of multiple pregnancies, and trimesters of pregnancy) in currently pregnant women were assessed. RESULTS: Of 8330 women that indicated pregnancy status, 1544 women (age range: 20-44 years; 523 nulligravida, 498 previously pregnant, 523 currently pregnant women) were included in analysis. Currently, pregnant women had a higher prevalence of nocturia than previously pregnant and nulligravida women (56.4% vs. 22.5% vs. 16.1%, p < 0.001) and had the highest odds of nocturia (OR: 6.82, p < 0.001). GDM or history of multiple pregnancies showed no associations in currently pregnant women. Increasing trimesters were associated with nocturia, with the third trimester showing the highest odds (OR: 10.35, p < 0.001) and a greater average of nighttime voids than the first and second trimesters (2.40 ± 1.42 vs. 1.56 ± 1.31 and 1.88 ± 1.32, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The association noted between pregnancy and nocturia, which strengthened with increasing trimesters, demonstrates that nocturia can significantly impact quality of life and therefore must be addressed during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and socio-economic inequalities in breast milk, breast milk substitutes (BMS) and other non-human milk consumption, by children under 2 years in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). DESIGN: We analysed the prevalence of continued breast-feeding at 1 and 2 years and frequency of formula and other non-human milk consumption by age in months. Indicators were estimated through 24-h dietary recall. Absolute and relative wealth indicators were used to describe within- and between-country socio-economic inequalities. SETTING: Nationally representative surveys from 2010 onwards from eighty-six LMIC. PARTICIPANTS: 394 977 children aged under 2 years. RESULTS: Breast-feeding declined sharply as children became older in all LMIC, especially in upper-middle-income countries. BMS consumption peaked at 6 months of age in low/lower-middle-income countries and at around 12 months in upper-middle-income countries. Irrespective of country, BMS consumption was higher in children from wealthier families, and breast-feeding in children from poorer families. Multilevel linear regression analysis showed that BMS consumption was positively associated with absolute income, and breast-feeding negatively associated. Findings for other non-human milk consumption were less straightforward. Unmeasured factors at country level explained a substantial proportion of overall variability in BMS consumption and breast-feeding. CONCLUSIONS: Breast-feeding falls sharply as children become older, especially in wealthier families in upper-middle-income countries; this same group also consumes more BMS at any age. Country-level factors play an important role in explaining BMS consumption by all family wealth groups, suggesting that BMS marketing at national level might be partly responsible for the observed differences.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the relationships between ferritin and blood pressure remain limited, especially in adult women. The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between serum ferritin and blood pressure among adult women. METHODS: Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a cross-sectional study, including 5521 adult women, was performed. Weighted multivariate regressions, subgroup analyses, threshold effect analyses, and sensitivity analysis were used. RESULTS: The authors found that serum ferritin was independently and positively correlated to diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and this positive correlation kept present among women who are 26-30 years old, non-pregnant women, Mexican American women, and women of other races in the subgroup analyses. Additionally, no significant association was found between serum ferritin and systolic blood pressure (SBP), except in women aged 26-30, Mexican American women, and women of other races. In pregnant women, the association between serum ferritin and SBP was an inverted U-shaped curve with an inflection point at 39.5 ng/mL. CONCLUSIONS: The authors demonstrated that serum ferritin was positively correlated to DBP in adult women, which may provide a novel reference for clinical management.

AIMS: To investigate the association between pro-inflammatory diets and low back pain in a nationally representative sample of Korean adults. BACKGROUND: Low back pain is one of the most common health issues. Evidence suggests a potential association between systemic inflammation and the development of low back pain, and the role of diet in mitigating the inflammation that, in turn, can alleviate low back pain. METHODS: This cross-sectional, correlational study used data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey involving health interviews, examinations, and nutritional surveys. Dietary inflammatory index scores were generated based on 24-hour dietary recalls. Respondents were asked if they had experienced low back pain for at least 30 days in the past three months. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate the independent association between pro-inflammatory diets and low back pain. RESULTS: Of 7346 respondents, most participants were middle-aged, married, and non-/ex-smokers, lived in 2+ person households, consumed alcohol less than once a week, and had no allergies or underlying medical conditions. Respondents in the highest inflammatory diet quintile had nearly 0.25 higher odds of reporting low back pain than those in the lowest quintile (adjusted ORquintile5vs1: 1.25, 95%CI [1.01-1.54]; p = .043). CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study indicate a role of pro-inflammatory diets in the development of low back pain. Nurses can screen for those consuming pro-inflammatory foods, and thus, are vulnerable to back pain, and aid in the delivery of tailored nutritional education. Future studies should investigate how diet affects low back pain diagnosis and chronicity relative to pain phenotypes.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: To our knowledge, the interaction between alcohol consumption and PNPLA3 genotype on hepatic steatosis has not been explored in a representative sample. To examine the interaction between alcohol consumption and PNPLA3 genotype on hepatic steatosis in the US adult population. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 4,674 adult participants of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Phase 2 (1991-1994) with data on PNPLA3 genotype, self-reported alcohol consumption, ultrasound-defined hepatic steatosis and socio-demographic characteristics. RESULTS: In 1991-1994 in the U.S. population, the weighted allele frequency of the G (risk) allele of the rs738409 at PNPLA3 was 25.4%. We confirmed both a J shaped association between alcohol consumption and hepatic steatosis among those with the CC genotype of PNPLA3, and a higher prevalence of hepatic steatosis among those with PNPLA3 gene G variant. We found evidence of an interaction of PNPLA3 G allele presence on the association between moderate alcohol consumption and hepatic steatosis on both the multiplicative (relative prevalence ratio [RPR]=1.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-3.65) and additive scales (relative excess risk due to interaction=0.49, 95% CI 0.13-0.85). Compared to never drinkers, moderate alcohol drinking was associated with a 48% decreased risk of hepatic steatosis only among those without PNPLA3 G allele (PR=0.52, 95% CI 0.26-1.05), with no association among those with at least one copy of the PNPLA3 G allele (PR=1.02, 95% CI 0.68-1.54). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that a highly common and strong genetic susceptibility to liver disease is modifiable by the level of alcohol consumption. Keeping alcohol consumption low may offset genetic predisposition to liver disease.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of micronutrient status is essential to understand the health of individuals and populations, but there are limited data on the stability of micronutrients in whole blood. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to investigate the effects of delayed processing of whole blood on the stability of 25 micronutrient and selected clinical biomarkers. METHODS: Blood from 16 healthy adults was collected into EDTA, lithium heparin (LH), or serum tubes. Samples were processed within 2 hours of collection ("2-hour processed") or mailed overnight (boxed with frozen cold packs) before processing ("24-hour processed"). Micronutrient and clinical biomarker concentrations were quantified with validated methods. The concentration percentage difference between the 2- and 24-hour processed samples was calculated and was compared against quality specifications determined from intra- and interindividual variations. RESULTS: All analytes had a sample type where the percentage difference concentration between 2-hour and 24-hour processed samples was ≤4% and was acceptable based on calculated limits, including for biomarkers of vitamin A, vitamin D, thiamin, folate, vitamin B-12, iron (ferritin), and zinc status and for selected clinical markers, C-reactive protein, HDL and total cholesterol, and triglycerides. EDTA plasma vitamin C was lower compared to the 2-hour processed sample (geometric mean, 43%; 95% CI: 36%-49%). Pyridoxal-5-phosphate (vitamin B-6 biomarker) decreased, with differences from the 2-hour processed samples of -8% (95% CI: -13% to -2%) and -14% (95% CI: -18% to -9%) in LH plasma and serum, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In blood collected from adult participants, delayed processing of chilled whole blood for 24 hours did not materially affect the measured concentrations of the majority of micronutrients and selected clinical biomarkers. This suggests that for these analytes, adherence to a 2-hour processing protocol may be unnecessary. This knowledge is valuable and may help to simplify logistics for sample transport and processing of blood samples for micronutrient status assessment.

Associations between meat consumption and heart disease have been assessed in several studies, but it has been suggested that other dietary factors influence these associations. The aim of the present study was to assess whether meat consumption is associated with ischaemic heart disease (IHD), and if the association is modified by dietary quality. The analyses were based on the cohort of adult participants in the Danish National Survey on Diet and Physical Activity in 2000-2002, 2003-2008 and 2011-2013. From these surveys, information on meat consumption and dietary quality was extracted. The cohort was followed in national registers to identify incident IHD. Associations were estimated using Cox regression analyses adjusting for socio-demographic and lifestyle factors. Analyses of associations between meat consumption and IHD stratified by dietary quality were subsequently evaluated. Among the 8007 participants, the median follow-up was 9·8 years and 439 cases of IHD were recorded. The results suggested a trend between consumption increments of 100 g/d of red meat (hazard ratio (HR) = 1·23; 95 % CI 0·99, 1·53) or of 50 g/d of processed meat (HR = 1·09; 95 % CI 0·93, 1·29) and higher risk of IHD. The trends were, however, not statistically significant. Stratification by dietary quality did not suggest that associations between meat consumption and risk of IHD were modified by dietary quality. This population-based cohort study with detailed dietary information suggested a trend with higher meat consumption being associated with higher risk of IHD, but the association was not statistically significant. Results did not indicate that dietary quality modifies such associations.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of sociodemographic and environmental factors with the obesity occurrence in Argentina from a sex- and age-comparative perspective and a multilevel approach. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study based on secondary data from the National Survey of Chronic Diseases Risk Factors (CDRF) 2018, Argentina. Two-level logistic regression models stratified by sex and age were used. SETTING: The nationwide probabilistic sample of the CDRF survey and twenty-four geographical units. PARTICIPANTS: 16 410 adult people, living in Argentine towns of at least 5000 people, nested into 24 geographical units. Sex and age groups were defined as young (aged 18-44 years), middle-aged (45-64 years) and older (65 years and older) men and women. RESULTS: Single men (all age groups) and divorced/widowed men (aged 45 years or older) had a lower obesity risk compared to married ones. In the middle-aged group, men with higher education showed a lower risk than men with incomplete primary education. In young women, a marked social gradient by educational level was observed. A low-income level coupled with highly urbanised contexts represents an unfavourable scenario for young and middle-aged women. Having a multi-person household was a risk factor for obesity (OR = 1·26, P = 0·038) in middle-aged women. Contextual factors linked to the availability of socially constructed recreational resources and green spaces were associated with obesity among young adults. CONCLUSIONS: Socio-environmental determinants of obesity seem to operate differently according to sex and age in Argentina. This entails the need to address the obesity epidemic considering gender inequalities and the socio-environmental context at each stage of life.

OBJECTIVE: To characterise dietary habits, their temporal and spatial patterns and associations with BMI in the 23andMe study population. DESIGN: We present a large-scale cross-sectional analysis of self-reported dietary intake data derived from the web-based National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009-2010 dietary screener. Survey-weighted estimates for each food item were characterised by age, sex, race/ethnicity, education and BMI. Temporal patterns were plotted over a 2-year time period, and average consumption for select food items was mapped by state. Finally, dietary intake variables were tested for association with BMI. SETTING: US-based adults 20-85 years of age participating in the 23andMe research programme. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 23andMe customers who consented to participate in research (n 526 774) and completed web-based surveys on demographic and dietary habits. RESULTS: Survey-weighted estimates show very few participants met federal recommendations for fruit: 2·6 %, vegetables: 5·9 % and dairy intake: 2·8 %. Between 2017 and 2019, fruit, vegetables and milk intake frequency declined, while total dairy remained stable and added sugars increased. Seasonal patterns in reporting were most pronounced for ice cream, chocolate, fruits and vegetables. Dietary habits varied across the USA, with higher intake of sugar and energy dense foods characterising areas with higher average BMI. In multivariate-adjusted models, BMI was directly associated with the intake of processed meat, red meat, dairy and inversely associated with consumption of fruit, vegetables and whole grains. CONCLUSIONS: 23andMe research participants have created an opportunity for rapid, large-scale, real-time nutritional data collection, informing demographic, seasonal and spatial patterns with broad geographical coverage across the USA.

BACKGROUND: Public health measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic have upended the way Canadians eat and shop for food. Since the pandemic began, many Canadians have reported consuming food away from home (FAFH) less often. FAFH tends to be less healthful than food prepared at home. Little is known about patterns of Canadians' FAFH consumption before the pandemic. This study used 2015 national-level nutrition data, the most recent available, to characterize patterns of FAFH consumption and selected markers of dietary intake. DATA AND METHODS: National-level food intake data came from the first 24-hour dietary recall provided by 20,475 respondents aged 1 or older to the 2015 Canadian Community Health Survey-Nutrition. Mean daily intakes of selected food subgroups and nutrients, adjusted for total energy intake, were compared between those who had consumed any food in a restaurant on the previous day and those who had not. Estimates were generated overall and for eight age and sex groups. RESULTS: In 2015, overall, 21.8% of Canadians had consumed FAFH in a restaurant on the previous day. Eating out was most common among males aged 19 to 54 (27.7%) and least common among young children aged 1 to 5 (8.4%). Compared with Canadians who had not eaten out on the previous day, those who had eaten out had consumed, on that day, fewer servings of whole fruit; whole grains; dark green and orange vegetables; other vegetables (excluding potatoes); milk and fortified soy-based beverages; and legumes, nuts and seeds, on average. Those who had eaten out had consumed, on average, less fibre and total sugar, and more total fat, saturated fat and sodium on that day. There were few differences for meat and poultry, fish and seafood, and protein intake. DISCUSSION: On the day that Canadians ate out in a restaurant, their dietary intake was generally less favourable than that of Canadians who did not eat out. If Canadians continue to eat at home more and to consume less FAFH, as early pandemic-period reports suggest, then results can be used to gauge the potential dietary implications of these shifts.

Background and Objectives: Hyperuricemia is associated with several comorbidities. The association between uric acid (UA) and pulmonary function is still a controversial issue. This study evaluated the gender-specific association of serum UA and pulmonary function. Materials and Methods: A total of 3177 (weighted n = 19,770,902) participants aged 40 years or older were selected from the 2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and included. Results: Female participants with hyperuricemia were older than participants with normouricemia. Body mass index (BMI), mean arterial pressure (MAP), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were significantly associated with UA levels in both males and females. Hyperuricemia and increase in UA quartile were significantly associated with decreased forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) in females after adjustment for age, income, region, education, marital status, alcohol consumption, smoking, BMI, MAP, HbA1c, and eGFR. There was no significant association between UA levels and lung function in males. After additional adjustment for respiratory disease including pulmonary tuberculosis, asthma, and lung cancer, the association between hyperuricemia and decreased FEV1 and FVC in females was revealed. Conclusions: Hyperuricemia was associated with decreased FVE1 and FVC in the female general population.

INTRODUCTION: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (SNAP) is a federal programme aimed to alleviate hunger and improve food insecurity. The impact of SNAP participation on overall health has been studied. However, little is known about the effects of SNAP participation on oral health. We aimed to investigate the association between participating in SNAP and dental caries and to explore the role of food insecurity as a moderator in this relationship. METHODS: We obtained data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles 2011-2012 and 2013-2014.The primary outcome was untreated dental caries (none vs. one or more). Self-reported SNAP participation status in the past 12 months was the predictor, and food security was the moderator. Food security was measured as overall food security status (full food secure/ food insecure) and household-level food security (full, marginal, low and very low). Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the relationship between SNAP and dental caries, and whether food insecurity moderates this relationship. Statistical analysis was carried out in September 2020. RESULTS: Our results suggested that after adjusting for potential confounders, SNAP participants were more likely to have untreated dental caries than non-SNAP participants (odds ratio: 1.6; 95% CI: 1.2-2.0). Food security status did not alter the relationship between SNAP participation and untreated dental caries. CONCLUSIONS: Food security status did not alter the relationship between SNAP participation and untreated dental caries. SNAP participation was associated with untreated dental caries among U.S. adults, and this was not affected by their food security status.
