Among the leucocyte subpopulations circulating in peripheral blood of immune-compromised patients with disseminated Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection, polymorphonuclear leuckocytes (PMNL) and M/M may carry infectious virus. While only in PMNL early HCMV replicative events do occur, monocytes are susceptible to complete virus replication when they enter human organs, where as macrophages become a site of active complete virus replication. In vivo leucocytes and endothelial cells interact continuously, as suggested by several in vitro experimental findings showing the bidirectional HCMV transmission from leucocytes to and from endothelial cells with the critical aid of adhesion molecules. Recently, the neutralising antibody response in sera from subjects with primary HCMV infection was reported to be much higher and earlier than in human embryonic lung fibroblasts (HELF) cells when measured in endothelial cells and epithelial cells, where virus entry is mediated mostly by the pentamer complex gH/gL/pUL128/pUL130/pUL131, whereas it was much lower and delayed when determined in HELF, where virus entry is mediated mostly by the trimer complex gH/gL/gO. Thus, these results suggested that products of UL128L were the molecules primary responsible for the differential neutralising antibody response. This conclusion was confirmed by a series of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies directed to the components of pUL128L. Very recently, based on two sets of experiments including inhibition and immunoblotting assays, the pentamer complex/trimer complex ratio has been finally identified as the main factor of the neutralising antibody response. This ratio may change with the virus suspension producer and target cell system as well as number of cell culture passages.

TLR (Toll-like receptor)-21 is a non-mammalian TLR and exhibits a unique function within the innate immune systems of fishes, birds, and amphibians. Despite its important role as PRR (pattern recognition receptor), research on TLR21 in many fish species, as well as in rohu (Labeo rohita), remains relatively limited. This article describes the molecular cloning of LrTLR21 (TLR21 in L. rohita), 3D (3-dimensional) modelling of its LRR (leucine-rich repeat)-regions, prediction of LRR18 to LRR20 as the LPS (lipopolysaccharide)-binding site, and LRR1 to LRR5 and LRR21 to LRR23 as the poly I:C (polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid) binding sites. It also describes the response of LrTLR21 in response to Aeromonas hydrophila and Edwardsiella tarda infections and PAMPs (pathogen-associated molecular patterns) (LPS and poly I:C)-stimulations. The ORF (open reading frame) of the LrTLR21 comprises 2955 nucleotides, encoding 984 aa (amino acid) residues with molecular weight and isoelectric point of 113.791 kDa and â¼8.79, respectively. Domain analysis of the deduced LrTLR21 displayed the existence of a signal peptide (residues 1-24), 26 LRR regions (residues 61-685), a TM (transmembrane) domain (residues 736-758), and a TIR (Toll/interleukin-1 receptor) domain (residues 790-937). The 3D model of LrTLR21-LRR regions has parallel ß-sheets and few α-helices. Phylogenetically, LrTLR21 is closely related to the Onychostoma macrolepis and Carassius gibelio TLR21, and during ontogenesis, it is expressed in most of the developmental stages. In rohu fingerlings, it is consistently expressed in all examined tissues viz., skin, liver, heart, blood, eye, muscle, kidney, intestine, brain, gill, and spleen. Upon exposure to E. tarda and A. hydrophila infections, as well as LPS and poly I:C stimulations, the expression of LrTLR21 is significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the blood, kidney, liver, and gill. In the RBCs (red blood cells), PBLs (peripheral blood leukocytes), and kidney macrophages, LrTLR21 is also significantly induced following in-vivo and in-vitro LPS and poly I: C-stimulations. These findings on LrTLR21 are the first ones showing its structural insights and PAMPs binding motifs and its key role in recognizing pathogens and their PAMPs in RBCs, PBLs, and macrophages.

AIMS: Primary bone diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PB-DLBCL) is not recognized as a separate entity by the current classification systems. Here we define and highlight its distinctive clinical presentation, morphology, phenotype, gene expression profile (GEP), and molecular genetics. METHODS: We collected 27 respective cases and investigated their phenotype, performed gDNA panel sequencing covering 172 genes, and carried out fluorescence in situ hybridization to evaluate MYC, BCL2, and BCL6 translocations. We attempted to genetically subclassify cases using the Two-step classifier and performed GEP for cell-of-origin subtyping and in silico comparison to uncover up- and downregulated genes as opposed to other DLBCL. RESULTS: Most cases (n = 22) were germinal centre B-cell-like (GCB) by immunohistochemistry and all by GEP. Additionally, PB-DLBCL had a mutational profile similar to follicular lymphoma and nodal GCB-DLBCL, with the exception of more frequent TP53 and B2M mutations. The GEP of PB-DLBCL was unique, and the frequency of BCL2 rearrangements was lower compared to nodal GCB-DLBCL. The Two-step classifier categorized eight of the cases as EZB, three as ST2, and one as MCD. CONCLUSION: This study comprehensively characterizes PB-DLBCL as a separate entity with distinct clinical and morpho-molecular features. These insights may aid in developing tailored therapeutic strategies and shed light on its pathogenesis.

Plants defend themselves against herbivores by recognizing herbivore-derived elicitors and activating intracellular signaling. In Arabidopsis, the receptor-like kinase HAK1 recognizes the poly-saccharide elicitor (FrA) from Spodoptera litura larvae, leading to the expression of defense-related genes such as PDF1.2. During this process, the cytoplasmic kinase CRK2 phosphorylates PBL27, triggers the ERF13 expression via ethylene signaling and subsequently leads to PDF1.2 expression. Herein, we investigated four cytoplasmic kinases from the same receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase (RLCK) VII family as PBL27 that interacts with CRK2. Among them, PBL11, like PBL27, is phosphorylated by CRK2 and induces PDF1.2 expression but does not affect ERF13 expression. The weight gain of S. litura larvae on PBL11-deficient mutant plants was only slightly higher than that of wild-type plants, suggesting that PBL11 may function as a minor RLCK that supports the defense response.

What is the educational challenge?Incorporation of large language model (LLM) or generative artificial intelligence (AI) software poses a challenge to various areas of medical education, including problem-based learning (PBL). LLMs, such as ChatGPT, have incredible potential to transform educational systems and enhance student learning outcomes when used responsibly.What are the proposed solutions?ChatGPT can provide several ways to support students and assist facilitators with course responsibilities. Here we address factors of implementation and describe how ChatGPT can be responsibly utilized to support key elements of PBL.How was the solution implemented?Providing reasonable access is an essential element of novel software implementation. Additionally, training for both faculty and staff is vital to foster responsible usage, provide base-line proficiency, and guide users to critically evaluate the quality of output.What lessons were learned that are relevant to a wider audience?The use of LLMs or other generative AI is dramatically rising in the world. Appropriate and conscientious incorporation of AI into educational programs can foster responsible use and potentially enhance student learning.What are the next steps?Assessment of learning outcomes, student self-efficacy, group dynamics, and stakeholder feedback are required to measure the effects of ChatGPT in the PBL curriculum. Additionally, software programs competitive with ChatGPT are currently under development and will also need to be investigated for their potential role in education.

BACKGROUND: Currently, problem-based learning (PBL) has been widely used in many disciplines, but no systematic review has explored the advantages and disadvantages of PBL in orthopaedics education. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Chongqing VIP Database (VIP), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases up to April 2023 to identify for relevant studies. Relevant studies were identified by using specific eligibility criteria, and data were extracted. RESULTS: A total of 51 randomized controlled trials with 4268 patients were included. Compared with traditional education, PBL teaching yielded significantly higher knowledge scores (SMD=1.10, 95% CI: 0.78~1.41, P<0.00001), procedural skill scores and clinical skill scores than traditional teaching (SMD=2.07, 95% CI: 1.61~2.53, P<0.00001; SMD=1.20, 95% CI: 0.88~1.52, P<0.00001). Moreover, the total scores were higher in the PBL teaching group than in the traditional teaching group (MD=5.69, 95% CI: 5.11~6.26, P<0.00001). Students also expressed higher levels of interest and satisfaction in the PBL teaching group than in the traditional teaching group (OR=4.70, 95% CI: 3.20~6.93, P<0.00001; OR=5.43, 95% CI: 3.83~7.69, P<0.00001). However, there was less learning time and higher levels of learning pressure in the PBL teaching group (OR=0.12, 95% CI: 0.06~0.24, P<0.00001; OR=5.95, 95% CI: 3.16~11.23, P<0.00001). CONCLUSION: Current evidence indicates that PBL teaching can increase knowledge scores, procedural skill scores, and clinical skill scores. Students have higher levels of interest in teaching and higher levels of teaching satisfaction in the PBL group. However, students can feel higher levels of study pressure and experience less study time. The findings of the current study need to be further verified in multicentre, double-blind and large-sample RCTs.

BACKGROUND: Team-based learning (TBL) and problem-based learning (PBL) are two effective educational approaches used in medical education for increasing knowledge acquisition, learning motivation, and collaborative and communication skills among students. Few studies have been conducted in Saudi Arabia to evaluate medical students' perceptions of these approaches. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of current or previous preclinical students at the College of Medicine, Najran University (NU) about the effectiveness of PBL and TBL and to assess students' perceptions regarding the strengths and limitations of both educational approaches and their preferences. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 106 preclinical students at NU, Saudi Arabia. The survey questionnaire was validated by a pilot study and designed based on Kirkpatrick's evaluation model. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the collected data through IBM SPSS Statistics 2.0. RESULTS: 73.6% of participants enjoyed PBL and found it motivating compared to TBL and classic lectures. PBL was reported as more effective for knowledge acquisition (50%), teamwork (62.3%), and high academic performance (58%). CONCLUSION: It is concluded that PBL was more favored by the students regarding the learning outcomes. TBL was reported to need more individual preparation and effort and require lecturer involvement, suggesting the need for structured facilitation in this learning approach and potentially indicating the challenges associated with coordinating team-based activities.

BACKGROUND: Medical education has undergone significant changes over the last decades. Scientific and technological progress alongside contemporary society's changing requirements have driven demand for highly trained, competent doctors. In response to this need, university faculties of medicine have sought innovative forms of teaching and evaluating the students on their degree courses. The aim of this study was to quantify the characteristics and extent of academic training in teaching methods, of participation in innovative teaching initiatives, and training in simulation and debriefing among the teaching personnel on the degree course in medicine at the University of Granada (Spain). METHODS: This transversal descriptive study was conducted among a population of 121 educators teaching on the medical degree course at the University of Granada, Spain. All responded to a specially designed CoRe-Content Representation questionnaire. This consisted of various parts: (a) demographic data; (b) teaching experience and qualifications; (c) specific information about training in teaching skills received. The Fisher test was applied whenever the dependent variable had two values (dichotomous) and the Chi-square test when it had more than two values (polytomic). Statistical significance was established with an alpha error of 5%. RESULTS: The results showed that 87.60% of the educators had received no training in debriefing. There was a notable gender gap, whereby women held fewer management posts, fewer were engaged in clinical activity, and fewer had undergone training in clinical simulation. Teachers with degrees in medicine had undergone less regulated training than educators with other degree qualifications. CONCLUSION: The main areas of medical training that require improvement (and so present challenges to be met in the years to come) are as follows: a definitive solution to the existing gender gap, general implementation of new educational models and methods (especially learning based on clinical problem-solving and simulation), closing generation gaps, and improved training processes for educators with clinical attachment.

BACKGROUND: In order to meet the demand for laboratory talents in the clinical laboratory industry and address the current curriculum characteristics and shortcomings of the teaching mode of "Clinical Hematology Laboratory Technology", we investigated the effectiveness of the bridge-in, objective, pre-assessment, participatory learning, post-assessment, and summary model combined with problem-based learning (BOPPPS-PBL) in undergraduate teaching of this course. METHOD: Seventy students majoring in Medical Laboratory Technology from the Army Medical University in the past 5 years have been selected and divided into two groups with the same teaching content and time. The control group (2015 and 2016 grades) used traditional teaching methods, while the experimental group (2017, 2018 and 2019 grades) used the BOPPPS-PBL model. After class, diverse evaluation methods were used to analyze the formative and summative exam scores of the two groups of students. RESULTS: After the reform, students performed significantly better in exams than before. In addition, the new teaching methods have had a positive impact, with students demonstrating high motivation for self-directed learning and problem-solving abilities. CONCLUSION: Compared to traditional teaching methods. The BOPPPS-PBL integrated case study education model is a relatively effective teaching method to improve students' problem-solving ability and comprehensive practical ability.

BACKGROUND: Besides regulatory learning skills, learning also requires students to relate to their social context and negotiate it as they transition and adjust to medical training. As such, there is a need to consider and explore the role of social and cultural aspects in student learning, particularly in problem-based learning, where the learning paradigm differs from what most students have previously experienced. In this article, we report on the findings of a study exploring first-year medical students' experiences during the first semester of an undergraduate problem-based learning medical program at an African medical school. METHOD: We employed a qualitative case study approach using in-depth interviews with 23 first-year medical students. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 25 years. All students were bi/multilingual (some spoke three to five languages), with English as the learning language. We conducted an inductive thematic analysis to systematically identify and analyze patterns in the data using the Braun and Clarke framework. RESULTS: Before medical school, students worked hard to compete for admission to medical school, were primarily taught using a teacher-centered approach, and preferred working alone. At the beginning of medical school, students found it challenging to understand the problem-based learning process, the role of the case, speaking and working effectively in a group, managing a heavy workload, and taking increased responsibility for their learning. By the end of the first semester, most students were handling the workload better, were more comfortable with their peers and facilitators, and appreciated the value of the problem-based learning approach. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the importance of interrogating contextual sociocultural factors that could cause tension when implementing problem-based learning in non-western medical schools. Adjustment to problem-based learning requires a conceptual and pedagogic shift towards learner-centered practice, particularly concerning self-direction, the role of the case, and collaborative learning. As such, there is a need to develop and implement research-informed learning development programs that enable students to reflect on their sociocultural beliefs and practices, and enhance their regulatory learning competence to optimize meaningful and early engagement with the problem-based learning process.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of implementing a data-driven blended online-offline (DDBOO) teaching approach in the medicinal chemistry course. METHODS: A total of 118 third-year students majoring in pharmacy were enrolled from September 2021 to January 2022. The participants were randomly assigned to either the DDBOO teaching group or the traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) group for medicinal chemistry. Pre- and post-class quizzes were administered, along with an anonymous questionnaire distributed to both groups to assess students' perceptions and experiences. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the pre-class quiz scores between the DDBOO and LBL groups (T=-0.637, P = 0.822). However, after class, the mean quiz score of the DDBOO group was significantly higher than that of the LBL group (T = 3.742, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the scores for learning interest, learning motivation, self-learning skill, mastery of basic knowledge, teamwork skills, problem-solving ability, innovation ability, and satisfaction, as measured by the questionnaire, were significantly higher in the DDBOO group than in the traditional group (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The DDBOO teaching method effectively enhances students' academic performance and satisfaction. Further research and promotion of this approach are warranted.

Management of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related diffuse large B-cell (DLBCL) and plasmablastic lymphomas (PBL) poses significant challenges. The evidence supports use of dose-adjusted EPOCH (etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin) with or without rituximab as first-line therapy. The need for central venous access, growth factors and significant toxicities limits its use in resource-constrained settings. To address these challenges, we have developed a novel regimen, CVEP (cyclophosphamide, vinblastine, etoposide, and prednisolone) based on the pharmacodynamic principles of dose-adjusted EPOCH. This single-centre phase II study evaluated the efficacy and safety of CVEP regimen in patients with de novo systemic AIDS-related DLBCL and PBL. The primary objective was complete response (CR) rates as assessed by positron emission tomography-computed tomography. The secondary objectives were incidence of Grade 3/4 toxicities, toxicities requiring hospitalisation, and disease-free survival. From May 2011 to February 2017, 42 patients were enrolled. At the end of therapy the CR rates were 69% (29/42) in the intention-to-treat population and 80.5% (29/36) in evaluable patients. At a median follow-up of 69 months, the 5-year disease-free survival was 65.3%. Out of 217 cycles administered, febrile neutropenia occurred in 19.3% and hospitalisation was required in 18.3% of cycles. There were two treatment-related deaths. The CVEP regimen is an active and safe regimen for AIDS-related DLBCL and PBL.

BACKGROUND: Traditional problem-based learning (PBL) relying on tutored learning in small groups is very resource-intensive. Little is known about the benefits of PBL in a large classroom setting. This paper introduced a PBL case into the traditional didactic biochemistry course and investigated the acceptability of total online or partial online PBL in a large classroom setting introduced during the coronavirus pandemic. METHODS: The students were allocated into either total online Group 1, partial online Group 2, or partial online and with poorer academic performance Group 3. A questionnaire comprising of 8 closed-ended questions and 2 open-ended questions and final exam performances were used to evaluate the acceptability of total online or partial online PBL in a large classroom setting. The 8 closed-ended questions were analysed by the Kruskal-Wallis test or chi-square tests. The word cloud analysis of the 2 open-ended questions were conducted by Wenjuanxing. Students' performances in the final examination were analysed by One-way Anova. RESULTS: Both total online and partial online PBL were rated highly by the students. Overall, there were no significant differences in the effectiveness evaluation of PBL between Group 2 and Group 3. There were no significant differences in final exam performances between Group 1 and Group 2. However, Group 1 rated the effectiveness of PBL much higher than Group 2 and 3. Word cloud analysis of the 2 open-ended questions showed students' positive perspectives of PBL. In biochemistry teaching, from the perspective of the students, the expected optimal number of useful PBL cases might be 2. CONCLUSIONS: Both total online and partial online PBL in a large classroom setting were widely accepted as a beneficial supplement to traditional biochemistry classes.

BACKGROUND: The problem-based learning (PBL) model has been widely carried out in many fields of medical colleges and universities. Immunochemistry as a cross-disciplinary science plays a vital role in preventing the occurrence of diseases and bridging the development of Life Science and Medicine. But now the Immunochemistry course still lacks the teaching practice in PBL. To explore the significance of PBL applied in the Immunochemistry course, the effect of the PBL model on the learning of undergraduates majoring in Chemicobiology was systematically evaluated. METHODS: The teaching objects were the undergraduates majoring in Chemicobiology from Guizhou Medical University. The PBL model was applied in the Immunochemistry course. 62 undergraduates in Grade 2018 were set as the control group and adopted the traditional expository model. 93 undergraduates in Grades 2019-2020 were separately set as the experimental groups, which adopted the PBL model based on traditional lecture-based learning. In the PBL model, six cases related to course contents were designed for the students to complete. The final exams of the undergraduates in Grades 2018-2020 were analyzed by the score ranges (< 60 points, 60-69 points, 70-79 points, and ≥ 80 points) and nonparametric test. Finally, the questionnaire survey about the teaching evaluation was performed in Grades 2019-2020. RESULTS: In Grades 2019 and 2020, the excellent rates (≥ 80 points), pass rates (≥ 60 points), fail rates (< 60 points), and average scores of the undergraduates were separately about 29%, 91.11% and 93.75%, 6.25%, and 8.89%, and 72.55 and 74.45 points. But in Grade 2018, the excellent rate, pass rate, failure rate, and average score of the undergraduates were separately 9.68%, 59.68%, 40.32%, and 62.55 points. By the statistical analysis, it was found that the excellent rates (χ2 = 8.317, P < 0.005) and pass rates (χ2 = 24.52, P < 0.0001) in Grades 2018-2020 were different, of which Grade 2020were the highest (29.17%, 93.75%) and Grade 2018 was the lowest (9.68%, 59.68%). The average score, excellent rate, and pass rate in Grade 2018 had significant differences with Grade 2019 (P < 0.0001, P < 0.0167) and Grade 2020 (P < 0.001, P < 0.0167). The questionnaire survey also showed that the student's learning interests, independent problem-solving ability, knowledge structure system, and scientific thought and teamwork awareness were enhanced. In Grades 2019 and 2020, the ICC (95% CI) of criterion validity and inter-rater reliability were separately 0.42/0.34 and 0.81/0.80 (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: The combination of PBL and traditional expository models played positive roles in the student's learning in the Immunochemistry course.

BACKGROUND: The nature of student learning in problem-based learning (PBL) largely depends on the quality of the case scenarios presented to them. The effect of case scenarios with higher challenge degree, especially common disease with atypical symptoms (CDAS)- and rare disease (RD)-based case scenarios, on undergraduate medical students remains unclear. This study compared the impact of all scenarios pertaining to common disease with typical symptoms (CDTS) case scenarios, CDTS interspersed with CDAS case scenarios, and CDTS interspersed with RD case scenarios on perceptions of undergraduate students studying organ/system integration curriculum via PBL. METHODS: After finishing four CDTS case scenarios, 294 third-year medical students were randomly allocated into three groups: CDTS, CDAS and RD, studying via CDTS, CDAS and RD case scenarios, respectively. A questionnaire with 15 items was conducted to evaluate the students' perceptions. The students' responses were scored using a 4-point rating scale. The data were analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: Among the three PBL conditions, the ones with a higher degree of challenge were rated higher by the students, which included the quality of the case scenarios and the overall performances of the students. The CDAS and RD cases were more effective in developing students' self-directed learning skills, stimulating them to acquire more knowledge required for future work. The satisfaction percentage of RD case scenario sessions was higher. CONCLUSIONS: Of all the three kinds of case scenarios, both CDTS interspersed with CDAS and RD case scenarios had more positive effects on the self-evaluated performance of students. Increasing the challenge and variety of case scenarios by the inclusion of CDAS and RD especially RD might be an effective stimulus in improving students' performance in PBL sessions.

BACKGROUND: In Asian higher education, PBL is not always successful, as few teachers have embraced a student-centred perspective. To cultivate such essential perspectives, faculty development programmes should address teachers' specific educational needs, which sadly is currently not sufficiently the case. This study aimed to identify teacher profiles that would reveal these specific educational needs of teachers and to investigate the relationship between these profiles and the amount of PBL training previously received. METHODS: To identify the said profiles, we performed latent profile analysis on a stratified random sample of 543 teachers based on a survey of teaching perspectives on the six aspects of Korthagen's onion model of reflection (environment, behaviour, competencies, beliefs, identity and mission). Additionally, we employed Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests to investigate the aforementioned relationship. RESULTS: We identified six teacher profiles that resemble the diffusion of innovations theory's classification of innovation adopters: Innovators, Early adopters, Early majority 1, Early majority 2, Late majority and Laggards. The Chi-square test demonstrated that the amount of PBL training received did not differ significantly across profiles, although teachers with a more innovative profile had undergone slightly more PBL training. The Mann-Whitney test furthermore revealed for three profiles that more PBL training was associated with a higher overall score for student-centredness. When aspects were considered separately, however, this was not the case. CONCLUSIONS: The findings confirmed that current faculty development programmes are not sufficiently tailored to teachers' needs. We therefore propose that faculty development programmes be redesigned to address teachers' specific educational needs as reflected in the profiles based on the 6 aspects of the onion model. We expect such a tailored approach to more effectively promote the development of student-centred perspectives.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis was conducted to systematically evaluate the impact of problem-based learning (PBL) and lecture-based learning (LBL) teaching models on students' learning in surgical education. METHODS: We systematically searched the publications related to the application of PBL and LBL in surgical courses in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases, the last retrieval time is September 20, 2022. After screening the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracting data and evaluating the methodological treatment of the included studies, Stata 17.0 software was used to perform meta-analysis. RESULTS: Nine studies were included totally. The results showed that compared with LBL, PBL was superior in clinical competence (SMD = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.12 ~ 1.49, P = 0.020) and student satisfaction (SMD = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.11 ~ 3.15, P < 0.0001) with significant differences. But the comprehensive scores (SMD = 0.26, 95% CI: -0.37 ~ 0.89, P = 0.421) and theoretical knowledge (SMD=-0.19, 95% CI: -0.71 ~ 0.33, P = 0.482) to PBL and LBL had no significant difference. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the PBL teaching model is more effective than the LBL teaching model in surgical education on the aspects of enhancing clinical competence and student satisfaction. However, further well-designed studies are needed to confirm our findings.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to investigate the efficacy of utilizing three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in concert with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Case-Based Learning (CBL) pedagogical approaches in educating senior undergraduate clinical medical students on respiratory diseases. METHODS: A cohort of 422 fourth-year clinical medicical students of from Anhui Medical University, pursuing a five-year program, were arbitrarily segregated into two distinct groups. The experimental group was subjected to a combined pedagogical approach, which included 3D printing technology, PBL and CBL (referred to as DPC). Conversely, the control group was exposed to conventional teaching methodologies for respiratory disease education. The effectiveness of the teaching methods was subsequently appraised using both theoretical test scores and custom questionnaires. RESULTS: Post-quiz scores indicated a statistically significant improvement in the DPC group as compared to the traditional group (P < 0.01). Self-evaluation and satisfaction questionnaires revealed that the DPC group's self-assessment scores outperformed the traditional group in several aspects, including clinical thinking ability, learning initiative, self-study ability, anatomical knowledge mastery, confidence in learning, ability to analyze and solve problems, comprehension of the knowledge, help to clinical thinking and level of satisfaction on the teaching methods (P < 0.01). However, within the unsatisfied DPC sub-group, none of these self-assessment aspects, except for comprehension of the knowledge, impacted the learning efficacy (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The deployment of the DPC pedagogical approach may confer unique experiential learning opportunities for students, potentially enhancing theoretical test scores and promoting self-evaluation and satisfaction in the context of respiratory disease education. Hence, it may be instrumental in augmenting the overall teaching efficacy.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to explore the effectiveness of online problem-based learning (e-PBL) with multimedia animation scenarios by comparing the face-to-face (f2f) PBL method with paper-based scenarios. Adapting different f2f teaching methodologies to online environments is a significant problem that urgently needs attention, particularly in health education. METHODS: This study is part of design-based research and consists of three phases, which comprise design, analysis, and re-design. First, the animation-based problem scenarios were developed, and the learning environment (e-PBL) elements were organized. Then animation-based scenarios and the e-PBL environment were used, and problems related to the use of the environment were determined with an experimental study which was based on a pretest-posttest control group design. Finally, we used the following three measurement tools in the data collection process: a scale to determine the effectiveness of PBL, an attitude scale toward PBL, and the Clinical Objective Reasoning Exams (CORE). The study group in this research comprised 92 medical undergraduates (47 female and 45 male). RESULTS: There were similar scores between the two groups (e-PBL and f2f) in terms of the effectiveness of the platforms, the attitudes of the medical undergraduates, and the CORE scores. Also, there were positive relationships between the attitude scores, grade point average (GPA), and PBL scores of the undergraduates. Another significant positive relationship was found between the CORE scores and the GPA. CONCLUSIONS: The animation-supported e-PBL environment positively effects the participants' knowledge, skills, and attitude. Students who have high academic scores attitude positively towards e-PBL. Providing problem scenarios as multimedia animations is the innovative face of the research. They have been produced inexpensively with off-the-shelf web-based animation apps. These technological advances may democratize the production of video-based cases in the future. Although the results of this study were obtained before the pandemic, they showed no differences between e-PBL and f2f-PBL in terms of effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Chinese universities are increasingly recruiting foreign students, and problem-based learning (PBL) is an effective approach to integrating those students. This study focuses on the role of intercultural sensitivity and group ethnic composition on the quality of group interaction in medical problem-based learning in China. METHODS: This paper reports an investigation of the differences in three types of group interaction (exploratory questions, cumulative reasoning, and handling conflict) among 139 s-year medical undergraduates from two backgrounds (Chinese and foreign) in a PBL setting. The roles of intercultural sensitivity, group ethnic composition, and students' personal characteristics including age, gender and ethnicity on students' perceptions of the three types of interaction were quantitatively analyzed. A 35-item questionnaire and demographic survey were administered to second year medical undergraduates. RESULTS: The results indicated that group ethnic composition was a significant negative predictor while intercultural sensitivity was a strong positive predictor of group interactions involving exploratory questions and cumulative reasoning. In addition, group heterogeneity in terms of age and ethnicity were significant predictors of group interaction. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study provide insights for strategically designing effective multiethnic group learning environments that encourage interaction and collaboration.
