OBJECTIVES: To a) identify threshold values of presenteeism measurement instruments that reflect unacceptable work state in employed r-axSpA patients; b) determine whether those thresholds accurately predict future adverse work outcomes (AWO) (sick leave or short/long-term disability); c) evaluate the performance of traditional health-outcomes for r-axSpA; d) explore whether thresholds are stable across contextual factors. METHODS: Data from the multinational AS-PROSE study was used. Thresholds to determine whether patients consider themselves in an 'unacceptable work state' were calculated at baseline for four instruments assessing presenteeism and two health-outcomes specific for r-axSpA. Different approaches derived from the receiver operating characteristic methodology were used. Validity of the optimal thresholds was tested across contextual factors and for predicting future AWO over 12 months. RESULTS: Of 366 working patients, 15% reported an unacceptable work state; 6% experienced at least one AWO in 12 months. Optimal thresholds were: WPAI-presenteeism ≥40 (AUC 0.85), QQ-method <97 (0.76), WALS ≥0.75 (AUC 0.87), WLQ-25 ≥ 29 (AUC 0.85). BASDAI and BASFI performed similarly to the presenteeism instruments: ≥4.7 (AUC 0.82) and ≥3.5 (AUC 0.79), respectively. Thresholds for WALS and WLQ-25 were stable across contextual factors, while for all other instruments they overestimated unacceptable work state in lower educated persons. Proposed thresholds could also predict future AWO, although with lower performance, especially for QQ-method, BASDAI and BASFI. CONCLUSIONS: Thresholds of measurement instruments for presenteeism and health status to identify unacceptable work state have been established. These thresholds can help in daily clinical practice to provide work related support to r-axSpA patients at risk for AWO.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) places a burden on work productivity. Recently, dupilumab was approved for AD, but its impact on work productivity in Japanese patients has not been reported. Furthermore, data on the effect of long-term treatment with dupilumab on work productivity are limited. We investigated the work productivity and activity in Japanese patients with moderate-to-severe AD, utilizing the Japanese version of the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI-AD-Japan) questionnaire. Furthermore, we examined the impact of dupilumab on work productivity. Adult moderate-to-severe AD patients treated with dupilumab for more than 12 months from March 2020 to June 2022 who filled out the WPAI-AD-Japan questionnaire were included. Twenty-eight adult AD patients were analysed. Absenteeism was low (mean: 5.3%), but presenteeism, work productivity loss and activity impairment were high (36.8%, 39.7%, 48.9%, respectively). Significant positive correlations were observed between work productivity loss and visual analogue scale (VAS) score of pruritus and between activity impairment and dermatology life quality index (DLQI). Dupilumab treatment significantly reduced presenteeism, work productivity loss and activity impairment at both 6 and 12 months. The extent of their amelioration was numerically higher at 12 months than at 6 months. The reduction rates in presenteeism, work productivity loss and activity impairment were positively correlated with the reduction rates in DLQI and VAS score of pruritus at 12 months. Dupilumab improved work productivity in Japanese AD patients. Long-term remission of pruritus and improved quality of life are important for comprehensive improvement of work productivity.

BACKGROUND: Migraine, a condition affecting 12% of the population, is a prevalent cause of disability, significantly impacts individuals during their most productive working years. Several studies have established that a migraine patient's job performance is often limited by absenteeism and presenteeism. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of migraines on occupational burnout, which affects up to 40% of workers. METHODS: A subset of participants from the Negev Migraine Cohort, including both migraine patients and non-migraine controls, were asked to complete the study questionnaire. The main exposures of interest were migraine diagnosis and severity. The primary outcome was occupational burnout. Migraine severity and associated disability were evaluated using the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) score, psychiatric comorbidities using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 Items (DASS-21) scale and occupational burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS version) scale. Statistical analyses included multivariable quantile regression models to identify associations and adjust for potential confounders. RESULTS: In total, 675 migraine patients and 232 non-migraine participants participated in the study. Migraine patients exhibited higher rates of depression (mean DASS-21: 0.864 vs. 0.664, standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.262), tended to work longer hours (median weekly hours: 40.0 vs. 36.0, SMD = 0.148) and expressed a preference for remote work (20.3% vs. 10.3%, SMD = 0.097). Migraine patients reported significantly higher levels of occupational burnout (mean burnout score: 3.46 vs. 2.82, SMD = 0.469). Controlling for depression, anxiety and stress, migraine diagnosis (25th percentile estimate = 0.67, p = 0.002, 75th percentile estimate = 0.92, p = 0.032) and migraine severity (estimates: 2.2-5.3, p < 0.001 for all) were associated with higher levels of occupational burnout. CONCLUSIONS: Migraine diagnosis and severity is associated with an occupational burnout, after controlling for various psychological and work-related factors. The findings underscore the need for workplace adjustments to support migraine patients' participation in the work market.

OBJECTIVES: To describe real-world use/effectiveness of pegcetacoplan (PEG) in paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH). METHODS: Data were drawn from the Adelphi PNH Disease Specific Programme™, a cross-sectional survey conducted in France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the United States from January to November 2022. Patients had a confirmed PNH diagnosis and received PEG for ≥1 month. Physicians reported patient characteristics, treatment use/satisfaction and their perception of patients' fatigue and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Patients reported treatment satisfaction and completed questionnaires assessing fatigue, HRQoL and productivity. Descriptive statistics were reported. RESULTS: Overall, 14 physicians provided data for 61 patients who had received 1080 mg/dose PEG for 1.3-14.8 months. At data collection compared to PEG initiation: haemoglobin was 2.5 g/dL higher on average; proportion of patients with lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ≥1.5 × upper limit of normal was reduced by 27.4%; physician-perceived fatigue was lower and HRQoL better. Physician- and patient-reported treatment satisfaction was high for >90% of patients. Physicians and patients were more satisfied with PEG than previously prescribed C5 complement inhibitors. Mean work impairment and activity impairment in the 7 days prior to data collection were 32.9% and 22.4%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These real-world data support the effectiveness of PEG through positive effects on haemoglobin, LDH, fatigue and HRQoL.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (PIBD) poses significant challenges not only to patients but also to their families, particularly affecting the work productivity of caregivers. This Spanish multicenter study aims to elucidate the extent of this impact. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, multicenter study was conducted between February 2021 and June 2023, involving parents or caregivers of PIBD patients aged 10-18 years. The study utilized the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI) questionnaires alongside assessing disease activity and socioeconomic status to quantify work productivity loss and its economic implications. RESULTS: The study included 370 patients from 37 centers, highlighting a significant loss of work productivity among caregivers, especially mothers. The global unemployment rate was notably higher in this group compared to national averages (22.9% vs. 13.8%), particularly among females (30.7% vs. 13.7%), with absenteeism and presenteeism rates (26.4% and 39.9%) significantly impacting the caregivers' ability to work. The study also identified active disease and treatment with biologics or steroids as risk factors for increased work productivity loss. CONCLUSIONS: Caregivers of children with inflammatory bowel disease face considerable challenges in maintaining employment, with a notable economic impact due to lost work hours. The findings underscore the need for targeted support and interventions to assist these families, suggesting potential areas for policy improvement and support mechanisms to mitigate the socioeconomic burden of PIBD on affected families.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to reveal the relationship of the days of experiencing sickness presentism and depressive symptoms among Korean workers. Sickness presenteeism which defined as the act of going to work despite being feeling unhealthy triggers various adverse effects on mental health, including increased risks of depression. Furthermore, Sickness presenteeism is a major social issue causing substantial socioeconomic costs. METHODS: The data of 25120 participants from sixth Korean Working Condition Survey was utilized in this cross-sectional study. Sickness presenteeism was defined using a self-reported questionnaire and depressive symptoms were assessed by WHO well-being index. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate the odd ratios for depressive symptoms regarding the number of days experiencing sickness presenteeism. We calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for depressive symptoms after categorizing participants into three groups based on the duration of experiencing sickness presenteeism, using cut-off values of 3 and 5 days. RESULTS: Workers who have experienced sickness presenteeism for more than 5 days were at highest risk for depressive symptoms than referent group (OR 2.87; 95% CI 2.17-3.76 in male, OR 3.86; 95% CI 3.02-4.91 in female). Furthermore, there was a trend of increasing risk for depressive symptom as the duration of experiencing sickness presenteeism extended. CONCLUSION: This study presents the association between experiencing sickness presenteeism in the previous 12 months and depressive symptoms. Based on the results, we provide individual and organizational strategies of reducing sickness presenteeism. Also, screening for workers who have experienced sickness presenteeism are needed to ensure good mental health.

PURPOSE: Presenteeism, the phenomenon of employees working despite illness, is a significant issue globally, impacting individual well-being and organizational efficiency. This study examines presenteeism among Swiss employees, exploring its occurrence, primary factors, reasons, and impact on employees' health. METHODS: This study used cross-sectional data from 1,521 employees in different sectors in Switzerland. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear models for influencing factors and detrimental effects, such as burnout symptoms, job satisfaction, general health, and quality of life, were calculated for data analysis. Presenteeism was measured using the Hägerbäumer multi-item scale, ranging from 1 = "Never in case of illness" - 5 = "Very often in case of illness." RESULTS: The employees reported that in case of illness, they rarely worked in the last 12 months M = 2.04 (SD = 1.00). A positive approach to presenteeism in the team was associated with less presenteeism (ß = -0.07) and problematic leadership culture in dealing with presenteeism with increased presenteeism (ß = 0.10). In addition to well-known factors, presenteeism was significant for burnout symptoms (ß = 1.49), general health status (ß = -1.5), and quality of life (ß = -0.01). CONCLUSION: The study offers insights into the phenomenon of presenteeism among Swiss employees in various sectors by applying a multi-item scale for presenteeism. The findings indicate that a positive team dynamic and organizational culture may significantly reduce presenteeism. Presenteeism behavior is a significant factor of adverse outcomes. This highlights the importance of acknowledging presenteeism in the context of occupational health.

BACKGROUND: The department of anesthesiology is the main battlefield for the treatment of acute and critical patients, with high work risk and high work pressure. Due to the particularity of the working environment and nature of work, medical staff have become a group with a high incidence of occupational exhaustion and presenteeism. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the current status of presenteeism among anesthesiology nurses in China and to analyze the related influencing factors. METHODS: Three hundred twelve anesthesiology nurses in Sichuan Province were surveyed by means of general data questionnaire, presenteeism scale, work-family conflict scale, perceived social support scale, occupational commitment scale and stress resistance scale from September to November 2023 by convenience sampling method. RESULTS: The total score of presenteeism was (14.67 ± 3.92), the score of work-family conflict was (45.44 ± 15.90), the score of professional commitment was (87.28 ± 14.30), and the score of perceived social support was (66.04 ± 12.78). The evaluation score of stress resistance was (73.35 ± 11.54). The results of multivariate analysis showed that age, education, mode of employment, position, overtime hours per week, work-family conflict, perceived social support and stress resistance were the factors that affected the presenteeism of anesthesiology nurses, which could explain 44.1% of the total variation. The position ( ß = 0.296, P < 0.001), overtime hours per week (h) ( ß = 0.271, P < 0.001), perceived social support ( ß = -0.279, P < 0.001) turned out as the stronger predictors of presenteeism. CONCLUSION: The presenteeism of anesthesiology nurses is at a high level and needs to be further improved. Clinical nursing managers should pay attention to the physical and mental health and special needs of anesthesiology nurses. Interventions are made according to the main influencing factors, so as to reduce the incidence of presenteeism and improve the quality and safety of surgery.

BACKGROUND: Supported wellbeing centres established during the COVID-19 pandemic provided high quality rest spaces and access to peer-to-peer psychological first aid for healthcare workers (HCWs). The centres were well accessed and valued by HCWs, but their relationship with wellbeing and job-related factors is not well established. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between wellbeing centre use, HCWs wellbeing and job-related factors (job stressfulness, job satisfaction, presenteeism, turnover intentions). METHODS: Secondary analysis of data from 819 HCWs from an acute hospital trust who completed an online survey in April-July 2020, as part of the COVID-Well study. Measures included the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, and four single-item global measures of job stressfulness, job satisfaction, presenteeism and turnover intentions. ANCOVA models and regression analyses were conducted on these data. RESULTS: HCWs who had not accessed the wellbeing centres had lower wellbeing (ß = 0.12, p < .001), higher job stressfulness (ß = - 0.22, p < .001), lower job satisfaction (ß = 0.39, p < .001), higher presenteeism (ß = - 0.22, p < .001) and were of younger age (ß = 0.09, p = .002). Centre use was associated with wellbeing irrespective of job stressfulness. Those reporting presenteeism and who accessed the centre (M = 3.30, SE = 0.04) had higher wellbeing than those who accessed the centre but did not report presenteeism (M = 3.06, SE = 0.04) (F(1, 791) = 18.65, p < .001, ηp2 = 0.02). Centre use was not significantly associated with turnover intentions (B = - 0.30, p = .13; Wald = 2.26; odds = 0.74), while job stress and job satisfaction showed significant effects. CONCLUSIONS: Accessing wellbeing centres was associated with higher wellbeing of HCWs, particularly for those reporting presenteeism. Therefore, the centres may have provided greatest respite and restoration for those present at work but not in optimal health. Younger workers were disproportionately affected in terms of wellbeing, and targeted support for this population is needed. Strategies to decrease presenteeism and maximise job satisfaction are urgently required. Healthcare organisations should provide rest spaces and psychological support to HCWs for the long-term, as part of a systems-wide approach to improving workforce health and wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: To date, hand eczema (HE)-related presenteeism has never been assessed within the general population, and general population-based studies on HE-related sickness absence are limited. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of HE-related presenteeism and sickness absence, and factors associated with HE-related presenteeism, within the Dutch general population. METHODS: Within the Lifelines Cohort Study, participants with HE in the last year (aged 18-65 in 2020), were identified by a questionnaire including questions regarding HE-related presenteeism and sickness absence. Socio-demographic factors were collected from 2006 to 2020. RESULTS: Out of the 3.703 included participants with HE, 2.7% (n = 100) reported HE-related presenteeism, with 19.8% (n = 57) among those with severe-to-very-severe HE. HE-related sickness absence was reported by 0.5% (n = 20) and 5.9% (n = 17), respectively. Logistic regression analyses, adjusted for age and sex, showed negative associations between HE-related presenteeism and higher educational attainment, higher income (>€2500) and higher occupational skill level, and positive associations for high-risk occupations, chronic HE, moderate and severe-to-very-severe HE (compared to almost clear), atopic dermatitis and occupational wet exposure. CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of HE-related presenteeism was found among participants with severe-to-very-severe HE. Future studies should focus on longitudinal associations with the clinical course of HE, as HE-related presenteeism might aggravate symptoms of HE.

We study US sick leave use and unaddressed sick leave needs in the midst of the global severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS COV 2) pandemic based on a representative survey. More than half of all US employees are unaware of the new emergency sick leave options provided by the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA). Awareness and take-up rates are significantly higher among Asian Americans and lower among the foreign-born. About 8 million employees used emergency sick leave in the first 6 to 8 mo. Nevertheless, the share of employees who needed but could not take paid sick leave tripled in the pandemic; unaddressed sick leave needs total 15 million employees per month and are 69% higher among women. Our findings show that access to paid sick leave significantly reduces unaddressed sick leave needs. We conclude that given the fragmented US sick leave landscape, to address the strong increase in unaddressed sick leave needs during the pandemic, federal FFCRA response was not adequate.

BACKGROUND: People with chronic inflammatory arthritis (IA) often have a reduced work ability. Consequently, they are at high risk of losing their jobs and being permanently excluded from the labor market. Therefore, we developed a new context-specific vocational rehabilitation intervention for people with IA based on the Medical Research Council's framework for complex interventions. This intervention is called "WORK-ON" and consists of: (1) Initial assessment and goal setting by an occupational therapist experienced in rheumatology rehabilitation; (2) coordinated support from the same occupational therapist, including assistance in navigating the primary and secondary healthcare and social care systems; (3) group sessions for peer support; and (4) individually tailored consultations with physiotherapists, nurses, and/or social workers. This study investigates the feasibility of WORK-ON. METHODS: A 6-month single-arm feasibility study with a pre-test post-test design was conducted to evaluate recruitment, intervention fidelity and delivery, data collection, and possible outcome measures. Work ability was the primary outcome, and sick leave, quality of life, fatigue, pain, physical activity, sleep, and well-being were the secondary outcomes evaluated. RESULTS: In total, 19 participants (17 women and 2 men) with a median age of 55 years (range, 34-64) participated and completed WORK-ON. Of these, 17 participants completed patient-reported outcomes at baseline and follow-up, and the results indicated a tendency to improvement in work ability, quality of life, level of physical activity, decrease in pain, and increase in days of sick leave during the 6-month intervention period. The rehabilitation clinicians spent an average of 15.3 h per participant, and the participants spent an average of 13.5 h in the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: WORK-ON is considered feasible and has the potential to increase work ability among people with IA who are concerned about their future ability to keep working. Though, an adjustment of the intervention is needed before testing in a randomized controlled trial.

BackgroundHealthcare personnel (HCP) are at high risk for respiratory infections through occupational exposure to respiratory viruses.AimWe used data from a prospective influenza vaccine effectiveness study in HCP to quantify the incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and their associated presenteeism and absenteeism.MethodsAt the start and end of each season, HCP at two Israeli hospitals provided serum to screen for antibodies to influenza virus using the haemagglutination inhibition assay. During the season, active monitoring for the development of ARI symptoms was conducted twice a week by RT-PCR testing of nasal swabs for influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Workplace presenteeism and absenteeism were documented. We calculated incidences of influenza- and RSV-associated ARI and applied sampling weights to make estimates representative of the source population.ResultsThe median age of 2,505 participating HCP was 41 years, and 70% were female. Incidence was 9.1 per 100 person-seasons (95% CI: 5.8-14.2) for RT-PCR-confirmed influenza and 2.5 per 100 person-seasons (95% CI: 0.9-7.1) for RSV illness. Each season, 18-23% of unvaccinated and influenza-negative HCP seroconverted. The incidence of seroconversion or RT-PCR-confirmed influenza was 27.5 per 100 person-seasons (95% CI: 17.8-42.5). Work during illness occurred in 92% (95% CI: 91-93) of ARI episodes, absence from work in 38% (95% CI: 36-40).ConclusionInfluenza virus and RSV infections and associated presenteeism and absenteeism were common among HCP. Improving vaccination uptake among HCP, infection control, and encouraging sick HCP to stay home are important strategies to reduce ARI incidence and decrease the risk of in-hospital transmission.

AIM(S): To investigate job characteristic profiles based on the job demands-resources (JD-R) model and the association between job characteristic profiles and presenteeism. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Data were collected from shift nurses in South Korea in January 2023 using an online survey. This study included 544 nurses working in tertiary and general hospitals in South Korea. The participants were classified into four job characteristic profiles based on the JD-R model using latent profile analysis. Multiple logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to examine the association between job characteristic profiles and presenteeism. RESULTS: Four profiles were derived from the latent profile analysis: low strain-low motivation, high strain-low motivation, low strain-high motivation and high strain-high motivation. The high strain-low motivation, low strain-high motivation and high strain-high motivation groups were 1.74, 1.37 and 3.51 times more likely to experience presenteeism than the low strain-low motivation group respectively. The number of days worked while sick and the level of reduced job productivity was also the highest in the high strain-high motivation group. In addition, general health, multimorbidities and insomnia were significant factors affecting presenteeism, number of days worked while sick and productivity loss among shift nurses. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that even with higher levels of job resources, work environments with high levels of job demands were associated with higher rates of presenteeism. IMPACT: Study findings suggest that various strategies are needed to improve the physical and mental health of shift nurses, and create a healthy organisational environment by reducing excessive job demands to reduce presenteeism and increase productivity. AIM: To examine the association between nurses' insomnia, presenteeism and care left undone and explore the mediating effect of presenteeism on the relationship between insomnia and care left undone among nurses in acute care hospitals, applying a dynamic model of presenteeism and absenteeism. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was conducted using online survey data collected in January 2023. Participants were 1154 registered nurses who provided direct nursing care to patients in tertiary or general hospitals (hospitals with 300 or more beds) in South Korea. Poisson regression analysis was used to examine the association between nurses' insomnia, presenteeism and care left undone. Generalised structural equation modelling was performed to examine the mediating effect of presenteeism on the relationship between insomnia and care left undone. RESULTS: The prevalence of insomnia was 15.3%. More than half of the participants (63.7%) reported experiencing presenteeism in the past 4 weeks. All reported at least one nursing care left undone during their last shift. Insomnia and presenteeism were positively associated with care left undone, and presenteeism mediated the relationship between insomnia and care left undone among nurses in acute care hospitals. CONCLUSION: Nurses experienced insomnia and presenteeism, related to higher rates of care left undone. Nurses' insomnia had a direct effect on care left undone and an indirect effect through presenteeism. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION: Nurse managers and administrators need to make greater efforts to reduce insomnia and presenteeism among nurses, thereby reducing care left undone and improving patient safety in acute care settings. IMPACT: Nurse managers and administrators should consider proactive interventions to address nurses' insomnia and foster a workplace with healthy systems and culture to reduce sleep disturbance and presenteeism, which can effectively decrease care left undone. Presenteeism, which refers to going to work despite being ill, has been associated with loss of work productivity, decreased quality of care, and an increased risk of health problems. The prevalence of presenteeism is particularly high among nurses; therefore, a reliable and valid tool is needed to assess presenteeism. This study aimed to translate the Stanford Presenteeism Scale (SPS) and to examine its psychometric properties in a Korean nurse population. A methodological study was performed in January 2023. The original SPS-6 (English-language) was translated and adapted to the Korean language using a committee approach translation, cognitive interviews, and content validation with a review panel of experts. An online survey was completed by 608 Korean nurses. The internal consistency, item-to-total correlation, construct validity, concurrent validity, and discriminant validity were examined as psychometric properties of the Korean version of the SPS. The final version of the K-SPS consists of four items shortened from the original six items. Cronbach's alpha of the K-SPS-4 was 0.74, indicating adequate reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a one-factor solution with a good fit. There was a positive correlation between the K-SPS-4 and the Work Limitations Questionnaire. Discriminant validity was evidenced by the positive correlation of the K-SPS-4 with job satisfaction and the negative correlation with job stress. The K-SPS-4 has acceptable psychometric properties, supporting the feasibility of its use in assessing the level of presenteeism among Korean nurses. The validated K-SPS-4 can provide a basis for developing intervention programs to enhance productivity and promote health among nurses in clinical settings.

PURPOSE: This project aimed to examine the existing evidence on work disability or musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among teleworkers. METHOD: A scoping review was conducted in eight bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, ABI/Inform Global, EBM Reviews, Web of Science, Dissertations & Theses Global) from inception to June 2022. RESULTS: Out of 9192 records identified, a total of 79 selected articles representing 77 studies were retained. Most studies were published after 2019, aligning with the COVID-19 pandemic's telework surge. Among the included papers, 51 addressed MSDs among teleworkers, 17 were on work disability, and 11 addressed both concepts. The studies were predominantly cross-sectional. Some trends are emerging, although study results are contradictory. Several papers reported increased musculoskeletal discomfort among teleworkers. Factors associated with MSDs among teleworkers include poor workstation setup, extended workdays, sedentary lifestyle, excessive devices use, and psychological factors. Regarding work disability, studies found that telework is associated with reduced absenteeism but increased presenteeism, with employees more likely to work while unwell from home than when on-site. Mixed results were found regarding teleworkers' work ability and functioning. CONCLUSION: This paper provides an overview of the literature on work disability and MSDs among teleworkers. It identifies literature gaps, underlining the need for ergonomic improvements, long-term impact studies, a better conceptualization of presenteeism in the context of telework, and tailored interventions to enhance the telework experience.

PURPOSE: Interest in presenteeism has increased in research. Presenteeism is a behaviour of going to work despite illness. It has been predominantly measured using single items, which introduce limitations to validity. To overcome these limitations, Hägerbäumer developed a German multi-item presenteeism scale. METHODS: The aim of the study was to provide an English translation and psychometric testing of the scale. This was conducted in two phases with native English-speaking employed adults. Phase 1 includes translation and cognitive debriefing, phase 2 testing construct validity and internal consistency reliability. RESULTS: Cognitive debriefing with 10 employees revealed no problems with understanding or answering the translated items. In total, 487 employed adults participated in the study, of which data from 287 were included in the analysis. For structural validity, the goodness-of-fit indicators all reached their thresholds (TLI = 0.98, CFI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.07, SRMR = 0.02). The scale does not show differences between sexes and age groups but between sectors (F6,70.95 = 5.53, p < 0.001). The internal consistency reliability was satisfactory with α = 0.89 (CI 95%, 0.87-0.91). CONCLUSION: The translated multidimensional scale for measuring presenteeism at the behavioural level demonstrated good psychometric properties in an initial validation. Further psychometric testing is required before using this scale in cross-national comparison in research and international companies.

BACKGROUND: Presenteeism has become a significant issue related to health. However, the effect of fatigue and organizational identification on the relationship between emotional labor and presenteeism among Chinese nurses remains unclear. This study aims to explore the correlation of Chinese nurses' emotional labor, fatigue and organizational identification with presenteeism, and to analyze the mediating effect of fatigue and the moderating effect of organizational identification on the relationship between emotional labor and presenteeism. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed from June to October 2022 in Changchun City, Jilin Province, China. In total, 1,630 nurses were asked to complete a range of self-administered questionnaires, including the Emotional Labor Scale, the Fatigue Scale, the Organizational Identification Scale and the Stanford Presenteeism Scale. Besides, the PROCESS macro and multiple linear regression were used for moderated mediation analysis. RESULTS: Emotional labor (r = 0.108, P < 0.001) and fatigue (r = 0.475, P < 0.001) were positively correlated with presenteeism, while organizational identification (r = -0.261, P < 0.001) was negatively correlated with presenteeism. The effect of emotional labor on presenteeism was partially mediated by fatigue (Effect = 0.014, 95% CI = [0.007, 0.021]). Additionally, the relationship between emotional labor and fatigue was moderated by organizational identification (P = 0.018 for the interaction term). CONCLUSIONS: Fatigue and organizational identification have mediating and moderating effects on the relationship between emotional labor and presenteeism, respectively. Targeted support measures should be taken to improve the presenteeism of nurses. Nursing managers can relieve the psychological pressure and fatigue of nurses by establishing emotional release channels, and improve the presenteeism of nurses through enhancing organizational identification.

BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care poses a significant challenge for healthcare staff in terms of patient safety and care quality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate presenteeism and missed care attitudes of nurses and to determine the correlation between presenteeism and missed care. METHODS: This descriptive, correlational, and observational study was conducted between February and August 2023. The Stanford Presenteeism Scale-Short Form and the MISSCARE Survey were used to collect the data among nurses at two public hospitals in a city in Turkey. The study was completed with 229 nurses representing 27.4% of the total number of nurses who met the inclusion criteria. The data was analyzed using a comprehensive analytical approach, including Cronbach's alpha analysis, frequency and percentage distribution, the Shapiro-Wilk test of normality, correlation coefficient analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, and the Bonferroni test. RESULTS: The participants' mean age was 30.22 ± 7.14 years, and 74.2% of them were female. 53.3% of the participants reported difficulty providing patient care due to material shortages, and 62.9% experienced challenges delivering care due to the intensity of paperwork in the clinic. Nurses who felt that paperwork intensity affected patient care and were not confident in their care provision had higher levels of presenteeism (p = 0.041) and a significantly higher frequency of missed care instances (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Material shortages and high paperwork intensity are contributing factors to the difficulties experienced by nurses in their practice. These difficulties may lead to an increase in presenteeism and instances of missed nursing care. It is important to address these challenges to ensure adequate care provision and reduce the likelihood of presenteeism among nurses. The correlation between presenteeism and instances of missed nursing care highlights the impact of presenteeism behaviors on the quality of patient care.
