A health workforce capable of implementing genomic medicine requires effective genomics education. Genomics education interventions developed for health professions over the last two decades, and their impact, are variably described in the literature. To inform an evaluation framework for genomics education, we undertook an exploratory scoping review of published needs assessments for, and/or evaluations of, genomics education interventions for health professionals from 2000 to 2023. We retrieved and screened 4,659 records across the two searches with 363 being selected for full-text review and consideration by an interdisciplinary working group. 104 articles were selected for inclusion in the review-60 needs assessments, 52 genomics education evaluations, and eight describing both. Included articles spanned all years and described education interventions in over 30 countries. Target audiences included medical specialists, nurses/midwives, and/or allied health professionals. Evaluation questions, outcomes, and measures were extracted, categorized, and tabulated to iteratively compare measures across stages of genomics education evaluation: planning (pre-implementation), development and delivery (implementation), and impact (immediate, intermediate, or long-term outcomes). They are presented here along with descriptions of study designs. We document the wide variability in evaluation approaches and terminology used to define measures and note that few articles considered downstream (long-term) outcomes of genomics education interventions. Alongside the evaluation framework for genomics education, results from this scoping review form part of a toolkit to help educators to undertake rigorous genomics evaluation that is fit for purpose and can contribute to the growing evidence base of the contribution of genomics education in implementation strategies for genomic medicine.

Implementation of genomic medicine into healthcare requires a workforce educated through effective educational approaches. However, ascertaining the impact of genomics education activities or resources is limited by a lack of evaluation and inconsistent descriptions in the literature. We aim to support those developing genomics education to consider how best to capture evaluation data that demonstrate program outcomes and effectiveness within scope. Here, we present an evaluation framework that is adaptable to multiple settings for use by genomics educators with or without education or evaluation backgrounds. The framework was developed as part of a broader program supporting genomic research translation coordinated by the Australian Genomics consortium. We detail our mixed-methods approach involving an expert workshop, literature review and iterative expert input to reach consensus and synthesis of a new evaluation framework for genomics education. The resulting theory-informed and evidence-based framework encompasses evaluation across all stages of education program development, implementation and reporting, and acknowledges the critical role of stakeholders and the effects of external influences.

While some established undergraduate summer programs are effective across many institutions, these programs may only be available to some principal investigators or may not fully address the diverse needs of incoming undergraduates. This article outlines a 10-week science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) education program designed to prepare undergraduate students for graduate school through a unique model incorporating mentoring dyads and triads, cultural exchanges, and diverse activities while emphasizing critical thinking, research skills, and cultural sensitivity. Specifically, we offer a straightforward and adaptable guide that we have used for mentoring undergraduate students in a laboratory focused on mitochondria and microscopy, but which may be customized for other disciplines. Key components include self-guided projects, journal clubs, various weekly activities such as mindfulness training and laboratory techniques, and a focus on individual and cultural expression. Beyond this unique format, this 10-week program also seeks to offer an intensive research program that emulates graduate-level experiences, offering an immersive environment for personal and professional development, which has led to numerous achievements for past students, including publications and award-winning posters.

In the face of a challenging climate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) higher education that is resistant to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts aimed to increase and retain students from historically excluded groups (HEGs), there is a critical need for a support structure to ensure students from HEGs continue to be recruited retained. The Biology Undergraduate and Master's Mentorship Program (BUMMP) embodies this commitment to fostering scientific identity, efficacy, and a sense of belonging for first-generation and historically underserved undergraduate and master's students at UC San Diego. The mission of BUMMP is to cultivate a sense of belonging, instill confidence, and nurture a strong scientific identity amongst all its participants. At its core, the three pillars of BUMMP are (1) mentorship, (2) professional development, and (3) research. Quality mentorship is provided where students receive personal guidance from faculty, graduate students, postdocs, and industry leaders in navigating their career pathways. Complementing mentorship, BUMMP provides paid research opportunities and prioritizes professional development by offering workshops designed to enhance students' professional skills. These three pillars form the backbone of BUMMP, empowering students from all backgrounds and ensuring their retention and persistence in STEM. So far, we've served over 1350 mentees, collaborated with 809 mentors, and had over 180 mentees actively engaged in BUMMP-sponsored research activities. The primary focus of this paper is to provide a programmatic guideline for the three pillars of BUMMP: mentorship, professional development, and research. This will offer a blueprint for other institutions to establish similar mentorship programs. Additionally, the paper highlights the impact of the BUMMP program and surveyed mentees who have participated in the mentorship and research component of BUMMP. We showed that mentorship and research experience enhance students' sense of belonging, science identity, and science efficacy, which are key predictors of retention and persistence in pursuing a STEM career. Overall, BUMMP's expansive efforts have made a tremendous impact at UC San Diego and will continue to foster a community of future leaders who will be prepared to make meaningful contributions to the scientific community and beyond.

Uncompensated work in academic infectious diseases (ID) may be high value (eg, important for academic promotion or necessary for advancement to leadership roles) or low value (eg, not aligning with or contributing to professional goals and aspirations). "Curbside" consultations, participation in hospital committees outside of professional interests, and other "citizenship" tasks are common examples of threats to our valuable time as ID providers. Herein, we define the scope of the problem of low-value uncompensated work in academic ID and outline a 6-step program to minimize these threats. Collaboration with professional sponsors, such as division chiefs, to align individual and team goals and use of a "value-versus-compensation" matrix to prioritize activities may help us establish our own agendas and reclaim our professional autonomy.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) efforts are increasingly recognized as critical for the success of academic institutions. These efforts are facilitated mainly through the formation of dedicated DEIA committees. DEIA committees enhance professional development and create a more inclusive environment, which benefits all members of the institution. Although leadership and faculty membership have recognized the importance and necessity of DEIA, the roles of DEIA committees may be more ambiguous. Although leadership and faculty may seek to support DEIA at their institutions, they may not always fully understand the necessity of these committees or how to successfully create a committee, foster and promote its success, and sustain its impact. Thus, here, we offer a background rationale and guide for strategically setting up DEIA committees for success and impact within an academic institution with applicability to scientific societies.

OBJECTIVE: There is an ongoing national shortage in the vascular surgery (VS) workforce. To increase interest in the specialty, the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Resident and Student Outreach Committee (RSOC) developed a dedicated general surgery (GS) resident and medical student (MS) program at the Vascular Annual Meeting (VAM) and invested in a scholarship program to help reduce attendee expenses. This study assesses the program's effectiveness, correlating recipient feedback with the likelihood of matching into a VS training program. METHODS: Records related to the SVS VAM GS resident and MS program from 2013 to 2023 were reviewed, focusing on attendee evaluations of the program. The program included a simulation session from 2013 to 2019. VS training program match rates among scholarship recipients were determined. The annual average match rate in VS was used to divide the survey responses into two groups: below average (BA) and above average (AA) match rate groups. Survey responses were based on a 5-point Likert scale and allowed for comments. Responses were divided into high value, strongly favoring the activity (scores 4-5), and low value (scores 1-3) categories. The survey responses from the group of years with AA match rates were compared with the group of years with BA rates. RESULTS: The SVS awarded 1040 GS resident and MS travel scholarships over the 10 years assessed. Overall, applicants had a 43% success rate in receiving a scholarship. During the study period, the annual number of applicants increased, whereas the number of scholarships and match success rates significantly decreased. The average match rate into VS among scholarship recipients was 50.2%. The survey response rate was 33%. During AA match rate years, evaluations for simulation allotted time and lectures were significantly more likely to be high value compared with BA years. Simulation content and the residency fair consistently had the most favorable evaluations (>90% high value), and overall, the program had a consistently positive impact on recipients' interest in VS (>90% high value). Trainees in the AA group were significantly more likely to provide positive comments (73% vs 55%; P < .001). Numerous recipients commented on the need for a dedicated space to interact with faculty and mentors and highlighted simulation as the standout aspect of the program. CONCLUSIONS: The SVS VAM RSOC program is positively correlated with attendee interest in VS, with approximately 50% of scholarship recipients matching into the field. The quality of the program and the number of scholarships correlate with VS match rates. Additional investments in similar programs could help close the workforce gap.

BACKGROUND: Coaching has been proposed to support the transition to residency. Clarifying its impact will help define its value and best use. OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences of residents working with coaches through the residency transition. DESIGN: A cohort comparison survey compared experiences of a coached resident cohort with coaches to the prior, uncoached cohort. PARTICIPANTS: Post-graduate year (PGY)-2 residents in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, and pathology at a single academic center. INTERVENTIONS: Faculty trained as coaches had semi-structured meetings with graduating medical students and residents throughout the PGY-1 year. MAIN MEASURES: An online anonymous survey assessed effects of coaching on measures of self-directed learning, professional development, program support and impact of coaching using existing scales (2-item Maslach Burnout Inventory, Brief Resilient Coping Scale, 2-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Stanford Professional Fulfillment Inventory), and novel measures adapted for this survey. Bivariate analyses (t-tests and chi-square tests) compared cohort responses. MANOVA assessed the effects of coaching, burnout and their interactions on the survey domains. KEY RESULTS: Of 156 PGY2 residents, 86 (55%) completed the survey. More residents in the "un-coached" cohort reported burnout (69%) than the "coached" cohort (51%). Burnout was significantly and negatively associated (F = 3.97 (df 7, 75); p < .001) with the learning and professional development outcomes, while being coached was significantly and positively associated with those outcomes (F = 5.54 (df 9, 75); p < .001). Significant interaction effects were found for goal-setting attitudes, professional fulfillment, and perceived program career support such that the positive differences in these outcomes between coached and un-coached residents were greater among burned out residents. Coached residents reported a positive impact of coaching across many domains. CONCLUSIONS: Residents experiencing coaching reported better professional fulfillment and development outcomes, with more pronounced differences in trainees experiencing burnout. Coaching is a promising tool to support a fraught professional transition.

BACKGROUND: With recent advancements in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), healthcare specialists may face challenges making treatment and management decisions based on latest evidence for the optimal care of patients with these conditions. This study aimed to identify specific knowledge, skills, and confidence gaps impacting the treatment of CLL and MCL, to inform future educational activities. METHODS: Hematologists and hemato-oncologists (HCPs, n = 224) from France (academic settings), Germany, and the United States (academic and community settings) responded to a 15-minute quantitative needs assessment survey that measured perceived knowledge, skills, and confidence levels regarding different aspects of treatment and management of CLL and MCL patients, as well as clinical case questions. Descriptive statistics (cross tabulations) and Chi-square tests were conducted. RESULTS: Four areas of educational need were identified: (1) sub-optimal knowledge of treatment guidelines; (2) sub-optimal knowledge of molecular testing to inform CLL/MCL treatment decisions; (3) sub-optimal skills when making treatment decisions according to patient profile (co-morbidities, molecular testing results); and (4) challenges balancing the risk of toxicities with benefits of treatment. Over one-third of the respondents reported skill gaps when selecting suitable treatment options and prescribing therapies and reported a lack in confidence to initiate and manage treatment. Larger gaps in knowledge of guidelines and skills in patient assessment were identified in MCL, compared to CLL. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests the need for continuing medical education specifically to improve knowledge of treatment guidelines, and to assist clinicians in developing skills and confidence when faced with clinical decision-making scenarios of patients with specific comorbidities and/or molecular test results, for example, through case-based learning activities.

In the dynamic landscape of scientific research, imaging core facilities are vital hubs propelling collaboration and innovation at the technology development and dissemination frontier. Here, we present a collaborative effort led by Global BioImaging (GBI), introducing international recommendations geared towards elevating the careers of Imaging Scientists in core facilities. Despite the critical role of Imaging Scientists in modern research ecosystems, challenges persist in recognising their value, aligning performance metrics and providing avenues for career progression and job security. The challenges encompass a mismatch between classic academic career paths and service-oriented roles, resulting in a lack of understanding regarding the value and impact of Imaging Scientists and core facilities and how to evaluate them properly. They further include challenges around sustainability, dedicated training opportunities and the recruitment and retention of talent. Structured across these interrelated sections, the recommendations within this publication aim to propose globally applicable solutions to navigate these challenges. These recommendations apply equally to colleagues working in other core facilities and research institutions through which access to technologies is facilitated and supported. This publication emphasises the pivotal role of Imaging Scientists in advancing research programs and presents a blueprint for fostering their career progression within institutions all around the world.

BACKGROUND: Fundamental motor skills (FMS) and physical fitness (FIT) play important roles in child development and provide a foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity (PA). Unfortunately, many children have suboptimal levels of PA, FMS, and FIT. The Active Learning Norwegian Preschool(er)s (ACTNOW) study investigated the effects of a staff-led PA intervention on FMS, FIT, and PA in 3-5-year-old children. METHODS: Preschools in Western Norway having ≥ six 3-4-year-old children were invited (n = 56). Of these, 46 agreed to participate and were cluster-randomized into an intervention (n = 23 preschools [381 children, 3.8 yrs., 55% boys]) or a control group (n = 23 [438, 3.7 yrs., 52% boys]). Intervention preschools participated in an 18-month PA intervention involving a 7-month staff professional development between 2019 and 2022, amounting to 50 h, including face-to-face seminars, webinars, and digital lectures. Primary outcomes in ACTNOW were cognition variables, whereas this study investigated effects on secondary outcomes. FMS was measured through 9 items covering locomotor, object control, and balance skills. FIT was assessed as motor fitness (4 × 10 shuttle-run test) and upper and lower muscular strength (handgrip and standing long jump). PA was measured with accelerometers (ActiGraph GT3X +). All measures took place at baseline, 7-, and 18-month follow-up. Effects were analysed using a repeated measures linear mixed model with child and preschool as random effects and with adjustment for baseline scores. RESULTS: Participants in the intervention preschools showed positive, significant effects for object control skills at 7 months (standardized effect size (ES) = 0.17) and locomotor skills at 18 months (ES = 0.21) relative to controls. A negative effect was found for handgrip strength (ES = -0.16) at 7 months. No effects were found for balance skills, standing long jump, or motor fitness. During preschool hours, sedentary time decreased (ES = -0.18), and light (ES = 0.14) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (ES = 0.16) increased at 7 months, whereas light PA decreased at 18 months (ES = -0.15), for intervention vs control. No effects were found for other intensities or full day PA. CONCLUSIONS: The ACTNOW intervention improved some FMS outcomes and increased PA short-term. Further research is needed to investigate how to improve effectiveness of staff-led PA interventions and achieve sustainable improvements in children's PA, FMS, and FIT. INTRODUCTION: Surgical societies provide a plethora of resources for trainees; however, these opportunities are often underused due to suboptimal guidance, sponsorship, or mentorship. Here, we present the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS) experience in enhancing the trainee experience and engagement in a surgical society focused on professional development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted an interactive idea-generating session during the 2022 SAAS Conference with all Associate Members (trainees) present in Honolulu, HI. Recurrent themes, concepts, and ideas/suggestions were carefully considered when planning the next SAAS Conference in Baltimore, MD. We employed a more targeted approach to trainee engagement at the 2023 SAAS Conference, with breakout sessions geared toward various levels of trainees, in addition to increased social events and networking opportunities. We obtained feedback from trainees in attendance through an electronic survey and informal conversations with faculty and Associate Members. RESULTS: Opportunities for surgical subspecialty networking was the most well-received portion of our formal Career Development program. The majority of trainees in attendance were medical students or junior residents who valued the exposure to junior faculty and those in leadership positions at academic institutions. The addition of a group text for easy communication among trainees and informal social activities for Associate Member networking among themselves were crucial in improving the overall conference experience. CONCLUSIONS: Opportunities to maximize trainee engagement in surgical societies are heightened during in-person conferences. Targeted session topics, guided networking opportunities, and creating channels for easier communication along with more social events have enhanced the overall experience for aspiring and current surgical trainees.

Epilepsy affects approximately 25 % of people with intellectual disability (ID). Despite this high prevalence, evidence of health disparity exists in healthcare access and health outcomes for this population. Patients with ID experience additional challenges in accessing appropriate epilepsy care, and are at greater risk of experiencing inappropriate prescribing, polypharmacy and misdiagnosis compared with the general population. The expectations, attitudes and actions of physicians are key in addressing health inequalities, particularly those which disproportionately impact a specific group of patients, such as patients with ID and epilepsy. This qualitative study aimed to explore the views of specialist physicians as to why they believe this patient group are at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing appropriate epilepsy care, and how physicians can intervene to ensure that patients with ID are given equal access to suitable epilepsy care, and equal opportunity to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with six physicians, located in six countries, who specialise in the care of persons with ID who have epilepsy. Interviews sought views on prognostic expectations, experiences of disparities in epilepsy care, and suggestions for advocacy interventions. Interviews were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three core themes and nine subthemes were identified. Core themes included (1) 'Nervousness in care and treatment,' which reflected participants' descriptions of a nervousness by colleagues when treating epilepsy in patients with ID. (2) 'Taking a deeper dive' captured the harmful effects of accepting "common dogma," as well as the issue of a lack of clarity around treatment pathways for patients with epilepsy and ID. (3) 'Teach me' illustrated the importance of shared expertise, reflective practice and continued research and advocacy. Findings reflected participants' recommendations to address disparities in epilepsy care for patients with ID. These recommendations highlighted education and training, taking time to learn how to communicate in different ways, and regular reflection on personal assumptions and biases as important contributors to addressing inequalities in epilepsy care for patients with ID. It is hoped that findings will prompt those providing epilepsy care to reflect on their own practice and identify ways in which they might intervene to minimise inadvertent harm and reduce health disparities in epilepsy care for patients with ID.

BACKGROUND: Physiological changes associated with ageing could negatively impact the crisis resource management skills of acute care physicians. This study was designed to determine whether physician age impacts crisis resource management skills, and crisis resource management skills learning and retention using full-body manikin simulation training in acute care physicians. METHODS: Acute care physicians at two Canadian universities participated in three 8-min simulated crisis (pulseless electrical activity) scenarios. An initial crisis scenario (pre-test) was followed by debriefing with a trained facilitator and a second crisis scenario (immediate post-test). Participants returned for a third crisis scenario 3-6 months later (retention post-test). RESULTS: For the 48 participants included in the final analysis, age negatively correlated with baseline Global Rating Scale (GRS; r=-0.30, P<0.05) and technical checklist scores (r=-0.44, P<0.01). However, only years in practice and prior simulation experience, but not age, were significant in a subsequent stepwise regression analysis. Learning from simulation-based education was shown with a mean difference in scores from pre-test to immediate post-test of 2.28 for GRS score (P<0.001) and 1.69 for technical checklist correct score (P<0.001); learning was retained for 3-6 months. Only prior simulation experience was significantly correlated with a decreased change in learning (r=-0.30, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A reduced amount of prior simulation training and increased years in practice, but not age on its own, were significant predictors of low baseline crisis resource management performance. Simulation-based education leads to crisis resource management learning that is well retained for 3-6 months, regardless of age or years in practice.

Throughout its 100-yr history, a key ambition of the British Journal of Anaesthesia has been to foster our academic community by addressing the needs of individuals in the early stages of their independent clinical and research careers. Longitudinal mentoring and peer networking are critical for establishing a community of like-minded peers and mentor-advisors required to navigate the challenges of academic medicine. In 2019, the Journal launched an Editorial Fellowship scheme, aimed at comprehensively demystifying the process of peer review, editing, and publishing through guided mentorship and experiential learning.

BACKGROUND: Regional anaesthesia plays an important role in perioperative care, but gaps in proficiency persist among consultants and specialists. This study aimed to assess confidence levels in performing Plan A blocks among this cohort and to examine the barriers and facilitators influencing regional anaesthesia education. METHODS: Utilising a mixed-methods design, we performed a quantitative survey to gauge self-reported confidence in performing Plan A blocks, coupled with qualitative interviews to explore the complexities of educational barriers and facilitators. UK consultant and specialist anaesthetists were included in the study. RESULTS: A total of 369 survey responses were analysed. Only 22% of survey respondents expressed confidence in performing all Plan A blocks. Specialists (odds ratio [OR] 0.391, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.179-0.855, P=0.016) and those in their roles for >10 yr (OR 0.551, 95% CI 0.327-0.927, P = 0.024) reported lower confidence levels. A purposive sample was selected for interviews, and data saturation was reached at 31 interviews. Peer-led learning emerged as the most effective learning modality for consultants and specialists. Barriers to regional anaesthesia education included apprehensions regarding complications, self-perceived incompetence, lack of continuing professional development time, insufficient support from the multidisciplinary team, and a lack of inclusivity within the regional anaesthesia community. Organisational culture had a substantial impact, with the presence of local regional anaesthesia champions emerging as a key facilitator. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights persistent perceived deficiencies in regional anaesthesia skills among consultants and specialists. We identified multiple barriers and facilitators, providing insights for targeted interventions aimed at improving regional anaesthesia education in this group.

PURPOSE: Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (AYACS) are patients diagnosed with cancer between 15 and 39 years of age. AYACS are often derailed from planned educational and occupational endeavors due to disruption from cancer treatment and its consequences. The study objective was to examine how a personal cancer diagnosis impacted AYACS' experiences related to these endeavors. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted as part of a larger study assessing psychosocial challenges among a younger AYACS subset aged 15-25 years old at the time of cancer diagnosis. Interviews were coded based on responses and were used to develop themes related to educational and occupational endeavors. RESULTS: Data were collected from 35 participants. Five themes emerged: (1) Pauses in educational attainment had a detrimental effect on educational goals for some participants, but further solidified and sculpted educational plans for others; (2) Although participants experienced challenges accomplishing educational goals, supportive school environments helped surmount these challenges; (3) Participants reflected on rethinking career aspirations, though some desired to pursue the same occupation planned before cancer diagnosis; (4) Participants experienced challenges, including physical and cognitive limitations, upon returning to work; and (5) Participants valued autonomy and normalcy through work and appreciated supportive and flexible work environments. CONCLUSIONS: AYACS prioritize professional achievement, yet encounter challenges in achieving professional goals. Our findings create a foundation for developing and testing prospective interventions to promote continuance of school and work during cancer treatment when feasible, and proactive reintegration strategies for those who paused professional goals due to cancer treatment.

AIM: The 1st European Workshop on Periodontal Education in 2009 made recommendations regarding the scope of periodontal education at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and continuing professional development (CPD) levels, defining competencies and learning outcomes that were instrumental at the time in helping to define periodontal teaching curricula. The 19th European Workshop on Periodontology and 2nd European Consensus Workshop on Education in Periodontology (Education in Periodontology in Europe) was held in 2023 to identify changes and future developments in periodontal education (including those informed by the COVID-19 pandemic) and embracing methods and formats of periodontal teaching and training. The aim of this review was to assess current knowledge regarding education methods in periodontology, including traditional face-to-face (F2F) teaching and the move to student-centred methods, virtual learning methods and use of digital technology, as well as blended teaching and learning (including teaching delivery and assessment) at UG, PG and CPD levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted to identify relevant studies from the literature. Data were extracted and descriptive summaries collated. RESULTS: The pandemic was a major disruptor of traditional F2F teaching but provided opportunities for rapid implementation of alternative and supplementary teaching methods. Although online learning has become an integral part of periodontal education, teachers and learners alike favour some form of F2F teaching. Blended teaching and learning are feasible in many areas of periodontal education, both for knowledge and skills acquisition as well as in assessment. Student-centred methods and blended approaches such as the flipped classroom seem highly effective, and online/virtual classrooms with both synchronous and asynchronous lectures are highly valued. Learning with haptic methods and virtual reality (VR) enhances the educational experience, especially when VR is integrated with traditional methods. The quality of the teacher continues to be decisive for the best knowledge transfer in all its forms. CONCLUSIONS: Live F2F teaching continues to be highly trusted; however, all types of student-centred and interactive forms of knowledge transfer are embraced as enhancements. While digital methods offer innovation in education, blended approaches integrating both virtual and traditional methods appear optimal to maximize the achievement of learning outcomes. All areas of periodontal education (UG, PG and CPD) can benefit from such approaches; however, more research is needed to evaluate their benefits, both for knowledge transfer and skills development, as well as in assessment.

AIM: To (i) evaluate structured postgraduate part-time programs in periodontology, including those addressing peri-implant diseases, among members of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), (ii) the impact of the 2018 classification scheme and EFP clinical practice guidelines and (iii) propose a framework for periodontal vocational education and training. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A summary of relevant European guidelines for vocational education and training was compiled. In a survey and in a systematic review, current part-time programs in continuing professional education in periodontology as well as in prevention and management of peri-implant diseases were examined. The implementation and dissemination of the 2018 classification scheme and the EFP clinical practice guidelines were assessed by literature analysis. Based on these findings, a framework for periodontal vocational education and training was generated. RESULTS: Part-time programs for professional development in periodontology are established in nine EFP member countries. The systematic review identified lack of knowledge in prevention and management of peri-implant diseases among dental practitioners and hygienists. Continuing professional development was found to be important for education in prevention, classification and management of periodontal as well as peri-implant diseases. The proposed European framework consists of an escalator model with three levels (certificate, diploma and master). DISCUSSION: Considering the identified variation in the national programs, there is a need to improve education in periodontal and peri-implant diseases. The proposed frameworkmay will help harmonize the national structures. CONCLUSION: The proposed framework for part-time professional development is expected to enhance professional qualification.

BACKGROUND: An Utstein style meeting of key stakeholders from the existing collaboration surrounding post-graduate training was arranged to set a direction for continuing professional development (CPD) of anesthesiologists in Denmark. A 2-day meeting was planned to guide discussions about competencies in anesthesiology, facilitate the development of a blueprint for a portfolio-based CPD program and provide examples of how a portfolio can be used in practice. METHODS: The meeting agenda was based on an adaptation of Kern's six-step approach to curriculum development. Twenty-four participants from the university hospitals in Denmark were invited. Prior to the meeting participants were informed of the objectives and the Utstein style process. RESULTS: Participants acknowledged a need for a more structured approach to CPD, preferably within the current organizational set up at the departmental level, and with a portfolio-based, individualized curriculum. It was recognized that CPD should contain an array of possibilities to accommodate needs and wants of both the individual and the department. It was emphasized that, while anesthesiologists are used to give feedback to trainees, many are less familiar in providing the same to peers, and psychological safety was identified as a prerequisite to support a culture where specialists can reflect openly on each other's performance. CONCLUSION: The results provide an insight into the attitudes, opportunities, and challenges of anesthesiologists in relation to continuing professional development in Denmark. Generally, participant suggestions are in line with the shift in medical education toward workplace-based learning, feedback and lifelong learning.
