RESUMO

The widespread use of plastics, especially polyolefin including polyethylene and polypropylene, has led to severe environmental crises. Chemical recycling, a promising solution for extracting value from plastic waste, however, is underutilized due to its complexity. Here, a simple approach, silicone-assisted direct laser writing (SA-DLW) is developed, to upgrade polyolefin plastic waste into multifunctional porous graphene, called laser-induced graphene (LIG). This method involves infiltrating polyolefins with silicone, which retards ablation during the DLW process and supplies additional carbon atoms, as confirmed by experimental and molecular dynamic results. A remarkable conversion yield of 38.3% is achieved. The upgraded LIG exhibited a porous structure and high conductivity, which is utilized for the fabrication of diverse energy and electronic devices with commendable performance. Furthermore, the SA-DLW technique is versatile for upgrading plastic waste in various types and forms. Upgrading plastic waste in the form of fabric has significantly simplified pre-treatment. Finally, a wearable flex sensor is fabricated on the non-woven fabric of a discarded medical mask, which is applied for gesture monitoring. This work offers a simple but effective solution to upgrade plastic waste into valuable products, contributing to the mitigation of environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution.

RESUMO

Hydrogel electrolyte can endow supercapacitors with excellent flexibility, which has developed rapidly in recent years. However, the water-rich structures of hydrogel electrolyte are easy to freeze at subfreezing and dry at high temperatures, which will affect its energy storage characteristics. The low energy density of micro supercapacitors also hinders their development. Herein, a strategy is proposed to reduce the free water activity in the hydrogel to improve the operating voltage and the energy density of the device, which is achieved through the synergistic effect of the hydrogel skeleton, N, N'-dimethylformamide (DMF), NaClO4 and water. High concentrations of DMF and NaClO4 are introduced into sodium alginate/polyacrylamide (SA/PAAM) hydrogel through solvent exchange to obtain SA/PAAM/DMF/NaClO4 hydrogel electrolyte, which exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 82.1 mS cm-1, a high breaking strength of 563.2 kPa, and a wide voltage stability window of 3.5 V. The supercapacitor devices are assembled by the process of direct adhesion of the hydrogel electrolyte and  laser induced graphene (LIG). The micro-supercapacitor exhibited an operating voltage of 2.0 V, with a specific capacitance of 2.41 mF cm-2 and a high energy density of 1.34 µWh cm-2, and it also exhibit a high cycle stability, good flexibility, and integration performance.

RESUMO

Developing a robust artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) system with a self-powered triboelectric sensor for harsh environment is challenging because environmental fluctuations are reflected in triboelectric signals. This study presents an environmentally robust triboelectric tire monitoring system with deep learning to capture driving information in the triboelectric signals generated from tire-road friction. The optimization of the process and structure of a laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode layer in the triboelectric tire is conducted, enabling the tire to detect universal driving information for vehicles/robotic mobility, including rotation speeds of 200-2000 rpm and contact fractions of line. Employing a hybrid model combining short-term Fourier transform with a convolution neural network-long short-term memory, the LIG-based triboelectric tire monitoring (LTTM) system decouples the driving information, such as traffic lines and road states, from varied environmental conditions of humidity (10%-90%) and temperatures (50-70 °C). The real-time line and road state recognition of the LTTM system is confirmed on a mobile platform across diverse environmental conditions, including fog, dampness, intense sunlight, and heat shimmer. This work provides an environmentally robust monitoring AIoT system by introducing a self-powered triboelectric sensor and hybrid deep learning for smart mobility.

RESUMO

Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG) is a 3D, conductive, porous material with a high surface area, produced by laser irradiation of synthetic polymers with high thermal stability. Recently, the focus has shifted toward sustainable bioderived and biodegradable precursors, such as lignocellulosic materials. Despite starch being an abundant and cost-effective biopolymer, direct laser scribing on starch-derived precursors has not yet been explored. This study demonstrates that corn starch bioplastic (SP) can be converted into LIG through iron-catalyzed laser-induced pyrolysis, using Fe(NO3)3 as an additive. The impact of iron additive concentration on LIG formation and on its properties is investigated, with only certain concentrations yielding reliable and reproducible results. The investigation of LIG's crystal structure reveals magnetic and non-magnetic iron phases: γ-Fe2O3, Fe3C, and Fe(C). The LIG nanocomposite exhibits soft magnetic properties, with a coercive field of Hc ≈ 200 Oe and a saturation magnetization of Ms ≈ 67 emu g⁻¹. The SP substrate degrades almost entirely in soil within 12 days and is unaffected by the addition of Fe(NO3)3, allowing for material compostability in line with circular economy principles. Consequently, SP stands out as a promising "green" precursor for magnetic LIG, paving the way for sustainable applications in environmental remediation.

RESUMO

Electrochemical paper-based microfluidics has attracted much attention due to the promise of transforming point-of-care diagnostics by facilitating quantitative analysis with low-cost and portable analyzers. Such devices harness capillary flow to transport samples and reagents, enabling bioassays to be executed passively. Despite exciting demonstrations of capillary-driven electrochemical tests, conventional methods for fabricating electrodes on paper impede capillary flow, limit fluidic pathways, and constrain accessible device architectures. This account reviews recent developments in paper-based electroanalytical devices and offers perspective by revisiting key milestones in lateral flow tests and paper-based microfluidics engineering. The study highlights the benefits associated with electrochemical sensing and discusses how the detection modality can be leveraged to unlock novel functionalities. Particular focus is given to electrofluidic platforms that embed electrodes into paper for enhanced biosensing applications. Together, these innovations pave the way for diagnostic technologies that offer portability, quantitative analysis, and seamless integration with digital healthcare, all without compromising the simplicity of commercially available rapid diagnostic tests.

RESUMO

Despite its potential for clean hydrogen harvesting, photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting cells face challenges in commercialization, particularly related its harvesting performance and productivity at an industrial scale. Herein, a facile fabrication method of flexible thin-film photoanode for PEC water-splitting to overcome these limitations, based on laser processing technologies, is proposed. Laser-induced graphene, a carbon structure produced through direct laser writing carbonization (DLWC), plays a dual role: a flexible and stable current collector and a substrate for the hydrothermal synthesis of tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanorods (NRs). To facilitate water-splitting, a femtosecond-pulsed laser (fs laser) is focused on the WO3 NRs, converting their crystalline phase from pristine orthorhombic to monoclinic structure without thermal damage. With NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst, the flexible thin-film photoanode exhibits good PEC performance (1.46 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE) and retains ≈90% of its performance after 3000 bending cycles. With its excellent mechanical properties, the flexible photoanode can be operated in various shapes with different curvatures, enabling space-efficient PEC water-splitting by loading larger photoanode within a given space. This study is expected to contribute to the advancement of large-scale solar water-splitting cells, introducing a new approach to enhance H2/O2 production and expand its application range.

RESUMO

Choline is an essential micronutrient for infants' brain development and health. To ensure that infants receive the needed daily dose of choline, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set requirements for choline levels in commercialized infant formulas. Unfortunately, not all families can access well-regulated formulas, leading to potential inadequacies in choline intake. Economic constraints or difficulties in obtaining formulas, exacerbated by situations like COVID-19, prompt families to stretch formulas. Accurate measurement of choline in infant formulas becomes imperative to guarantee that infants receive the necessary nutritional support. Yet, accessible tools for this purpose are lacking. An innovative integrated sensor for the periodic observation of choline (SPOOC) designed for at-home quantification of choline in infants' formulas and milk powders is reported. This system is composed of a choline potentiometric sensor and ionic-liquid reference electrode developed on laser-induced graphene (LIG) and integrated into a spoon-like device. SPOOC includes a micro-potentiometer that conducts the measurements and transmits results wirelessly to parents' mobile devices. SPOOC demonstrated rapid and accurate assessment of choline levels directly in pre-consuming infant formulas without any sample treatment. This work empowers parents with a user-friendly tool for choline monitoring promoting informed nutritional decision-making in the care of infants.

RESUMO

Health monitoring of composite structures in aircraft is critical, as these structures are commonly utilized in weight-sensitive areas and innovative designs that directly impact flight safety and reliability. Traditional monitoring methods have limitations in monitoring area, strain limit, and signal processing. In this paper, a multifunctional sensor has been developed using acid-treated laser-induced graphene (A-LIG) with a multi-layer three-dimensional conductive network. Compared to untreated laser-induced graphene, the sensitivity of A-LIG sensor is increased by 100%. Furthermore, PDMS is used to fill the pores, which improves the fatigue performance of the A-LIG sensor. To obtain clear monitoring results, a data conversion algorithm is provided to convert the electrical signal obtained by the sensor into a strain field contour cloud map. The impact test of the A-LIG/PDMS sensor on the carbon fiber panel of the aircraft wing box segment verifies the effectiveness of its strain sensing. This work introduces a novel approach to fabricating flexible sensors with improved sensitivity, extended strain range, and cost-effectiveness. The sensor exhibits high sensitivity (gauge factor,GF≈ 387), is low hysteresis (∼53 ms), and has a wide working range (up to 47%), and a highly stable and reproducible response over multiple test cycles (>18 000) with good switching response. It presents a promising and innovative direction for utilizing flexible sensors in the field of aircraft structural health monitoring.

RESUMO

Flexible pressure sensors have attracted wide attention because of their applications in wearable electronic, human-computer interface, and healthcare. However, it is still a challenge to design a pressure sensor with adjustable sensitivity in an ultrawide response range to satisfy the requirements of different application scenarios. Here, a laser patterned graphene pressure sensor (LPGPS) is proposed with adjustable sensitivity in an ultrawide response range based on the pre-stretched kirigami structure. Due to the out-of-plane deformation of the pre-stretched kirigami structure, the sensitivity can be easily tuned by simply modifying the pre-stretched level. As a result, it exhibits a maximum sensitivity of 0.243 kPa-1, an ultrawide range up to 1600 kPa, a low detection limit (6 Pa), a short response time (42 ms), and excellent stability with high pressure of 1200 kPa over 500 cycles. Benefiting from its high sensitivity and ultrawide response range, the proposed sensor can be applied to detect physiological and kinematic signals under different pressure intensities. Additionally, taking advantage of laser programmable patterning, it can be easily configured into an array to determine the pressure distribution. Therefore, LPGPS with adjustable sensitivity in an ultrawide response range has potential application in wearable electronic devices.

RESUMO

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has received much attention in recent years as a possible transducer material for electroanalytical sensors. Its simplicity of fabrication and good electrochemical performance are typically highlighted. However, we found that unmodified and untreated LIG electrodes had a limited shelf-life for certain electroanalytical applications, likely due to the adsorption of adventitious hydrocarbons from the storage environment. Electrode responses did not change immediately after exposure to ambient conditions but over longer periods of time, probably due to the immense specific surface area of the LIG material. LIG shelf-life is seldomly discussed prominently in the literature, yet overall trends for solutions to this challenge can be identified. Such findings from the literature regarding the long-term storage stability of LIG electrodes, pure and modified, are discussed here along with explanations for likely protective mechanisms. Specifically, applying a protective coating on LIG electrodes after manufacture is possibly the easiest method to preserve electrode functionality and should be identified as a trend for well-performing LIG electrodes in the future. Furthermore, suggested influences of the accompanying LIG microstructure/morphology on electrode characteristics are evaluated.

RESUMO

Multiplexing is a relevant strategy for biosensors to improve accuracy and decision-making due to the increased amount of simultaneously obtained information. Liposomes offer unique benefits for label-based multiplexing since a variety of different marker molecules can be encapsulated, leading to intrinsic signal amplification and enabling a variety of detection formats. We successfully developed an electrochemical (EC) liposome-based platform technology for the simultaneous detection of at least three analytes by studying parameters to ensure specific and sensitive bioassay performance. Influenza A and B and SARS-CoV-2 sequences served as model system in a standard sandwich hybridization assay. Studies included encapsulants, probe distribution on liposomes and capture beads, assay setup and interferences between liposomes to also ensure a generalization of the platform. Ruthenium hexamine(III), potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) and m-carboxy luminol, when encapsulated separately into a liposome, provided desirable long-term stability of at least 12 months and no cross-signals between liposomes. Through the optimization process, low limits of detections of 1.6 nmol L-1, 125 pmol L-1 and 130 pmol L-1, respectively, were achieved in a multiplexed assay setup, which were similar to singleplex assays. Non-specific interactions were limited to 25.1%, 7.6% and 7.5%, respectively, through sequential liposome incubations and singleplex capture bead designs. Here, ruthenium hexamine liposomes had only mediocre performance so that low overall signal strength translated into higher LODs and worse specificity. A different marker such as ferroin may be an option in the future. The identification of further electrochemical markers will provide new opportunities for liposomes to function as multiplex, orthogonal or internal standard labels in electrochemical bioassays.

RESUMO

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes have become popular for electrochemical sensor fabrication due to their simplicity for batch production without the use of reagents. The high surface area and favorable electrocatalytic properties also enable the design of small electrochemical devices while retaining the desired electrochemical performance. In this work, we systematically investigated the effect of LIG working electrode size, from 0.8 mm to 4.0 mm diameter, on their electrochemical properties, since it has been widely assumed that the electrochemistry of LIG electrodes is independent of size above the microelectrode size regime. The background and faradaic current from cyclic voltammetry (CV) of an outer-sphere redox probe [Ru(NH3)6]3+ showed that smaller LIG electrodes had a higher electrode roughness factor and electroactive surface ratio than those of the larger electrodes. Moreover, CV of the surface-sensitive redox probes [Fe(CN)6]3- and dopamine revealed that smaller electrodes exhibited better electrocatalytic properties, with enhanced electron transfer kinetics. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the physical and chemical surface structure were different at the electrode center versus the edges, so the electrochemical properties of the smaller electrodes were improved by having rougher surface and more density of the graphitic edge planes, and more oxide-containing groups, leading to better electrochemistry. The difference could be explained by the different photothermal reaction time from the laser scribing process that causes different stable carbon morphology to form on the polymer surface. Our results give a new insight on relationships between surface structure and electrochemistry of LIG electrodes and are useful for designing miniaturized electrochemical devices.

RESUMO

Since its introduction in 2014, laser-induced graphene (LIG) from commercial polymers has been gaining interests in both academic and industrial sectors. This can be clearly seen from its mass adoption in various fields ranging from energy storage and sensing platforms to biomedical applications. LIG is a 3-dimensional, nanoporous graphene structure with highly tuneable electrical, physical, and chemical properties. LIG can be easily produced by single-step laser scribing at normal room temperature and pressure using easily accessible commercial level laser machines and materials. With the increasing demand for novel wearable devices for biomedical applications, LIG on flexible substrates can readily serve as a technological platform to be further developed for biomedical applications such as point-of-care (POC) testing and wearable devices for healthcare monitoring system. This review will provide a comprehensive grounding on LIG from its inception and fabrication mechanism to the characterization of its key functional properties. The exploration of biomedicals applications in the form of wearable and point-of-care devices will then be presented. Issue of health risk from accidental exposure to LIG will be covered. Then LIG-based wearable devices will be compared to devices of different materials. Finally, we discuss the implementation of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) to wearable devices and explore and speculate on its potentials and challenges.

RESUMO

There have been many studies on the significant correlation between the hydrogen peroxide content of different tissues or cells in the human body and the risk of disease, so the preparation of biosensors for detecting hydrogen peroxide concentration has been a hot topic for researchers. In this paper, palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) and laser-induced graphene (LIG) were prepared by liquid-phase pulsed laser ablation and laser-induced technology, respectively. The complexes were prepared by stirring and used for the modification of screen-printed electrodes to develop a non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide biosensor that is low cost and mass preparable. The PdNPs prepared with anhydrous ethanol as a solvent have a uniform particle size distribution. The LIG prepared by laser direct writing has good electrical conductivity, and its loose porous structure provides more adsorption sites. The electrochemical properties of the modified electrode were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Compared with bare screen-printed electrodes, the modified electrodes are more sensitive for the detection of hydrogen peroxide. The sensor has a linear response range of 5 µM-0.9 mM and 0.9 mM-5 mM. The limit of detection is 0.37 µM. The above conclusions indicate that the hydrogen peroxide electrochemical biosensor prepared in this paper has great advantages and potential in electrochemical catalysis.

RESUMO

Smart wearable devices are extensively utilized across diverse domains due to their inherent advantages of flexibility, portability, and real-time monitoring. Among these, flexible sensors demonstrate exceptional pliability and malleability, making them a prominent focus in wearable electronics research. However, the implementation of flexible wearable sensors often entails intricate and time-consuming processes, leading to high costs, which hinder the advancement of the entire field. Here, we report a pressure and proximity sensor based on oxidized laser-induced graphene (oxidized LIG) as a dielectric layer sandwiched by patterned LIG electrodes, which is characterized by high speed and cost-effectiveness. It is found that in the low-frequency range of fewer than 0.1 kHz, the relative dielectric constant of the oxidized LIG layer reaches an order of magnitude of 104. The pressure mode of this bimodal capacitive sensor is capable of detecting pressures within the range of 1.34 Pa to 800 Pa, with a response time of several hundred milliseconds. The proximity mode involves the application of stimulation using an acrylic probe, which demonstrates a detection range from 0.05 mm to 37.8 mm. Additionally, it has a rapid response time of approximately 100 ms, ensuring consistent signal variations throughout both the approach and withdrawal phases. The sensor fabrication method proposed in this project effectively minimizes expenses and accelerates the preparation cycle through precise control of laser processing parameters to shape the electrode-dielectric layer-electrode within a single substrate material. Based on their exceptional combined performance, our pressure and proximity sensors exhibit significant potential in practical applications such as motion monitoring and distance detection.

RESUMO

There has been a significant shift in research focus in recent years toward laser-induced graphene (LIG), which is a high-performance material with immense potential for use in energy storage, ultrahydrophobic water applications, and electronic devices. In particular, LIG has demonstrated considerable potential in the field of high-precision human motion posture capture using flexible sensing materials. In this study, we investigated the surface morphology evolution and performance of LIG formed by varying the laser energy accumulation times. Further, to capture human motion posture, we evaluated the performance of highly accurate flexible wearable sensors based on LIG. The experimental results showed that the sensors prepared using LIG exhibited exceptional flexibility and mechanical performance when the laser energy accumulation was optimized three times. They exhibited remarkable attributes, such as high sensitivity (~41.4), a low detection limit (0.05%), a rapid time response (response time of ~150 ms; relaxation time of ~100 ms), and excellent response stability even after 2000 s at a strain of 1.0% or 8.0%. These findings unequivocally show that flexible wearable sensors based on LIG have significant potential for capturing human motion posture, wrist pulse rates, and eye blinking patterns. Moreover, the sensors can capture various physiological signals for pilots to provide real-time capturing.

RESUMO

A novel, in situ, low-cost and facile method has been developed to fabricate flexible NO2 sensors capable of operating at ambient temperature, addressing the urgent need for monitoring this toxic gas. This technique involves the synthesis of highly porous structures, as well as the specific development of laser-induced graphene (LIG) and its heterostructures with SnO2, all through laser scribing. The morphology, phases, and compositions of the sensors were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of SnO2 addition on structural and sensor properties were investigated. Gas-sensing measurements were conducted at room temperature with NO2 concentrations ranging from 50 to 10 ppm. LIG and LIG/SnO2 sensors exhibited distinct trends in response to NO2, and the gas-sensing mechanism was elucidated. Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing LIG and LIG/SnO2 heterostructures in gas-sensing applications at ambient temperatures, underscoring their broad potential across diverse fields.

RESUMO

The development of high-performance miniaturized and flexible airflow sensors is essential to meet the need of emerging applications. Graphene-based airflow sensors are hampered by the sluggish response and recovery speed and low sensitivity. Here we employ laser-induced graphene (LIG) with poststructural biomimicry for fabricating high-performance, flexible airflow sensors, including cotton-like porous LIG, caterpillar fluff-like vertical LIG fiber, and Lepidoptera scale-like suspended LIG fiber (SLIGF) structures. The structural engineering changes the deformation behavior of LIGs under stress, among which the synchronous propagation of the scale-like structure of SLIGF is the most conducive to airflow sensing. The SLIGF achieves the shortest average response time of 0.5 s, the highest sensitivity of 0.11 s/m, and a record-low detection threshold of 0.0023 m/s, benchmarked against the state-of-the-art airflow sensors. Furthermore, we showcase the SLIGF airflow sensors in weather forecasting, health, and communications applications. Our study will help develop next-generation waterflow, sound, and motion sensors.

RESUMO

Thin film-based thermal flow sensors afford applications in healthcare and industries owing to their merits in preserving initial flow distributions. However, traditional thermal flow sensors are primarily applied to track flow intensities based on hot-wire or hot-film sensing mechanisms due to their relatively facile device configurations and fabrication strategies. Herein, a calorimetric thermal flow sensor is proposed based on laser direct writing to form laser-induced graphene as heaters and temperature sensors, resulting in monitoring both flow intensities and orientations. Via homogeneously surrounding spiral heaters with multiple temperature sensors, the device exhibits high sensitivity (∼162 K·s/m) at small flows with an extended flow detection range (∼25 m/s). Integrating the device with a data-acquisition board and a dual-mode graphical user interface enables wirelessly and dynamically monitoring respiration and the motion of robotic arms. This versatile flow sensor with facile manufacturing affords potentials in health inspection, remote monitoring, and studying hydrodynamics.

RESUMO

Graphene materials synthesized using direct laser writing (laser-induced graphene; LIG) make favorable sensor materials because of their large surface area, ease of fabrication, and cost-effectiveness. In particular, LIG decorated with metal nanoparticles (NPs) has been used in various sensors, including chemical sensors and electronic and electrochemical biosensors. However, the effect of metal decoration on LIG sensors remains controversial; hypotheses based on computational simulations do not always match the experimental results, and even the experimental results reported by different researchers have not been consistent. In the present study, we explored the effects of metal decorations on LIG gas sensors, with NO2 and NH3 gases as the representative oxidizing and reducing agents, respectively. To eliminate the unwanted side effects arising from metal salt residues, metal NPs were directly deposited via vacuum evaporation. Although the gas sensitivities of the sensors deteriorate upon metal decoration irrespective of the metal work function, in the case of NO2 gas, they improve upon metal decoration in the case of NH3 exposure. A careful investigation of the chemical structure and morphology of the metal NPs in the LIG sensors shows that the spontaneous oxidation of metal NPs with a low work function changes the behavior of the LIG gas sensors and that the sensors' behaviors under NO2 and NH3 gases follow different principles.
