RESUMO
Research on postural control in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has focused on static postural control, with few studies assessing dynamic postural control. We aimed to identify factors affecting index of postural stability (IPS), a dynamic postural control parameter, in patients with AIS. The participants comprised 50 female patients with AIS. We measured the IPS using stabilometry to evaluate dynamic postural control ability. We investigated age of the participants, major curve position (thoracic or thoracolumbar/lumbar), Cobb angle, and coronal balance. We then assessed the relationships between stabilometry parameters and other variables. IPS was analyzed with a linear regression model. Coronal balance, major curve position, and age each correlated with dynamic postural control ability. The Cobb angle showed no correlation with any of the parameters. Our results offer new insights into the assessment of postural control in patients with AIS.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess postural stability in patients after total and unicompartmental knee arthroplasties. Materials and Methods: The study included 40 women who had undergone knee arthroplasties-20 women who had undergone total knee arthroplasty (TKA) (mean age 63.47 ± 2.17) and 20 women who had undergone unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) (mean age 64.65 ± 1.93). The comparison group consisted of 20 healthy women aged 60-69 years (mean age 64.45 ± 3.12). The average time from surgery to stabilometry was 14.4 months. Each patient underwent stabilography using a single-plate stabilography platform, which included both Romberg's test and a dynamic test. Additionally, the WOMAC scale was administered, where patients assessed their condition both before surgery and at the present time. Results: The averaged Romberg's test results show a slight displacement in the center of mass (COM) toward the forefoot and towards the right limb in both the TKA and UKA groups. The WOMAC scale results showed significant improvement and satisfactory functional outcomes in both groups. Conclusions: The study indicated that one year after surgery, patients in both groups required a larger base of support to maintain postural control. However, the results for the UKA group were more similar to those of healthy individuals.

There are studies that show the better balance after dry needling in lumbar pain. However, the postural control effects after foot dry needling are unknown. Our objective was to check if dry needling reduces postural control. Eighteen subjects with flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) muscle Myofascial trigger point were evaluated pre- and post-deep dry needling. We measured stabilometric variables in a pre-post study. We have found significant differences in three stabilometric variables: surface with eyes closed (29.36-53.21 mm2 ) (p = 0.000), medium speed of the laterolateral displacement with eyes closed (1.42-1.64 mm/s) (p = 0.004), and medium speed of the anteroposterior displacement with eyes closed (1.30-1.53 mm/s) (p = 0.025). Dry needling therapy application in FDB muscle reduces standing postural control with eyes closed.

A planar stick balancing task was investigated using stabilometry parameters (SP); a concept initially developed to assess the stability of human postural sway. Two subject groups were investigated: 6 subjects (MD) with many days of balancing a 90 cm stick on a linear track and 25 subjects (OD) with only one day of balancing experience. The underlying mechanical model is a pendulum-cart system. Two control force models were investigated by means of numerical simulations: (1) delayed state feedback (DSF); and (2) delay-compensating predictor feedback (PF). Both models require an internal model and are subject to certainty thresholds with delayed switching. Measured and simulated time histories were compared quantitatively using a cost function in terms of some essential SPs for all subjects. Minimization of the cost function showed that the control strategy of both OD and MD subjects can better be described by DSF. The control mechanism for the MD subjects was superior in two aspects: (1) they devoted less energy to controlling the cart's position; and (2) their perception threshold for the stick's angular velocity was found to be smaller. Findings support the concept that when sufficient sensory information is readily available, a delay-compensating PF strategy is not necessary.

PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between postural sway and the severity of lumbar spinal canal stenosis as well as the effect on postoperative improvement. METHODS: Stabilometry was performed before and 6 months after surgery in 52 patients (29 men and 23 women; mean age, 74.1 ± 7.8 years) who underwent decompression surgery for lumbar spinal canal stenosis. The environmental area (EA; the area surrounding the circumference of the stabilogram) and locus length per EA (L/EA) were evaluated. The patients were divided into moderate (n = 22) and severe (n = 30) groups according to the severity of canal stenosis. Patient characteristics and parameters were compared between the groups before and after surgery, including the visual analog scale (VAS) score for leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), EA, and L/EA. In addition, factors affecting EA and L/EA were evaluated using multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: Age (p = 0.031), preoperative EA (p < 0.001), preoperative L/EA (p = 0.032), and sagittal vertical axis (p = 0.033) were significantly different between groups. The VAS score and ODI significantly improved postoperatively in both groups (p < 0.001). The EA significantly improved postoperatively only in the severe group (p < 0.001), whereas the L/EA did not significantly improve in either group. Multiple regression analysis showed that only the severity of canal stenosis was significantly associated with preoperative EA (p = 0.030), whereas age (p = 0.040) and severity of canal stenosis (p = 0.030) were significantly associated with preoperative L/EA. Diabetes was significantly associated with postoperative EA (p = 0.046) and L/EA (p = 0.030). CONCLUSION: The severity of canal stenosis affected abnormal postural sway, which improved after decompression surgery.

BACKGROUND: Scars interfere with the motor system; however, the influence of c-section scars has not been described yet. The aim of this study is to relate the presence of abdominal scars from a caesarean section with changes in postural control-stability and orientation and abdominal and lumbar neuromuscular control in the orthostatic position. METHODS: Cross-sectional analytical observational study comparing healthy primiparous women with caesarean delivery (n = 9) and physiologic delivery (n = 12) who have delivered more than one year before. The relative electromyographic activity of the rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis/oblique internus and lumbar multifidus muscles, antagonist co-activation, the ellipse area, amplitude, displacement, velocity, standard deviation, and spectral power of the centre of pressure, and thoracic and lumbar curvatures, were evaluated in the standing position in both groups, through an electromyographic system, a pressure platform and spinal mouse system. In the "caesarean delivery" group, scar mobility was evaluated using a modified adheremeter. RESULTS: Significant differences in CoP medial-lateral velocity and mean velocity were observed between groups (p < 0.050), while no significant differences were in the level of muscle activity, antagonist co-activation, and thoracic and lumbar curvatures (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The information provided by the pressure signal seems to identify postural impairments in women with c-sections.

Age-associated disorders of the function of maintaining balance lead to an increase in the frequency of falls and related complications (injuries, limited mobility, decreased independence and autonomy, etc.). In addition, motor disorders of various genesis in most cases are accompanied by changes in postural function. An analytical review of the literature over the last decade devoted to methods of assessing postural balance in older age groups has been conducted. Computer stabilometry is recognized as the best method for an objective assessment of postural function and dynamic monitoring of the effectiveness of therapy. At the same time, the stabilometric characteristics of postural disorders in older age groups and the relationship between the indicators of stabilography and age remain insufficiently studied.

BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual disabilities often experience mobility limitations. Baduanjin, a mindfulness-based exercise intervention, can exert positive effects on functional mobility and balance. This study examined the impact of Baduanjin on physical functioning and balance of adults with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Twenty-nine adults with intellectual disabilities participated in the study. Eighteen received a Baduanjin intervention for 9-months; 11 participants did not receive any intervention (comparison group). Physical functioning and balance were assessed using the short physical performance battery (SPPB) and stabilometry. RESULTS: Participants in the Baduanjin group experienced significant changes in the SPPB walking test (p = .042), chair stand test (p = .015), and SPPB summary score (p = .010). No significant changes between groups were observed in any of the variables assessed at the end of the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Baduanjin practice may cause significant, albeit small, improvements in physical functioning of adults with intellectual disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To determine and generalize the indicators of stabilometry in healthy individuals for their further use as a control group in studies of pathologies of the musculoskeletal system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The study was conducted on a stable platform with biofeedback TYMO (Tyromotion). 30 male and female patients aged 18-25 years participated in the study. The following indicators were studied : distance traveled, medial-lateral deviation, anterior-posterior deviation, area of the statokinesiogram (COF), average speed, feedback system, Romberg index. Stabilometry was performed in a bipodal position, standing, in four functional positions: on a hard surface with eyes open and closed, on a soft surface with eyes open and closed. RESULTS: Results: The reference values of the stabilometric parameters: the traveled distance, medio-lateral deviation, anterior-posterior deviation, the area of the statokinesiogram, the average speed, the feedback system, the Romberg index in healthy individuals aged 18-25 years were determined . When evaluating the feedback system, it was established that the visual component was 34% (32.0; 36.0), the vestibular 34% (32.0; 35.0), the somatosensory 33% (30.0; 36.0). The reflex-driven index was 0.55 (0.46, 0.62), the central nervous system (CNS)-driven index was 1.55 (1.25, 1.89) . The Romberg index M1/ M2 was 0.94 (0.78, 1.07), M2/M3 was 0.98 (0.86, 1.10). CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The obtained indicators of movement in the sagittal plane, the area of the statokinesiogram, the average speed of movement, the feedback system (visual, vestibular, proprioceptive (somatosensory) components), the Romberg index (RI) can be considered reference values for healthy individuals aged 18-25 years .

BACKGROUND: Dual task influences postural control. A cognitive task seems to reduce muscle excitation during a postural balance, especially in older adults (OA). AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of three cognitive tasks on muscle excitation and static postural control in OA and young adults (YA) in an upright posture maintenance task. METHODS: 31 YA and 30 OA were evaluated while performing a modified Romberg Test in five different conditions over a force plate: open eyes, closed eyes, spatial-memory brooks' test, counting backwards aloud test and mental arithmetic task. The surface electromyographic signals of Tibialis anterior (TA), Lateral Gastrocnemius (GL), Peroneus Longus (PL), and Erector Spinae (ES) was acquired with an 8-channel surface electromyographic system. The following variables were computed for both the electromyographic analysis and the posturographic assessment: Root mean square (RMS), centre of pressure (CoP) excursion (Path) and velocity, sway area, RMS of the CoP Path and 50%, 95% of the power frequency. Mixed ANOVA was used to detect differences with group membership as factor between and type of task as within. The analysis was performed on the differences between each condition from OE. RESULTS: An interaction effect was found for Log (logarithmic) Sway Area. A main effect for task emerged on all posturographic variables except Log 95% frequencies and for Log PL and ES RMS. A main effect for group was never detected. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study indicates a facilitating effect of mental secondary task on posturographic variables. Non-silent secondary task causes increase in ES and TA muscle activation and a worsening in static postural control performance.

Static posturography assessed with force platforms is a procedure used to obtain objective estimates related to postural adjustments. However, controlling multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing the diagnostic accuracy is essential to obtain reliable measurements and recommend its use with clinical or research purposes. We aimed to analyze how different environmental acoustic conditions affect the test−retest reliability and to analyze the most appropriate number of trials to calculate a valid mean average score. A diagnostic accuracy study was conducted enrolling 27 healthy volunteers. All procedures were taken considering consistent device settings, posture, feet position, recording time, and illumination of the room. Three trials were recorded in a silent environment (35−40 dB) and three trials were recorded in a noisy environment (85−90 dB). Results showed comparable reliability estimates for both acoustic conditions (ICC = 0.453−0.962 and 0.621−0.952), but silent conditions demonstrated better sensitivity to changes (MDC = 13.6−76%). Mean average calculations from 2 and 3 trials showed no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05). Cross-sectional studies can be conducted under noisy or silent conditions as no significantly different scores were obtained (p > 0.05) and ICC were comparable (except oscillation area). However, longitudinal studies should consider silent conditions as they demonstrated better sensitivity to real changes not derived from measurement errors.

This study aimed to validate a sensorized version of a perceptive surface that may be used for the early assessment of misperception of body midline representation in subjects with right stroke, even when they are not yet able to stand in an upright posture. This device, called SuPerSense, allows testing of the load distribution of the body weight on the back in a supine position. The device was tested in 15 patients with stroke, 15 age-matched healthy subjects, and 15 young healthy adults, assessing three parameters analogous to those conventionally extracted by a baropodometric platform in a standing posture. Subjects were hence tested on SuPerSense in a supine position and on a baropodometric platform in an upright posture in two different conditions: with open eyes and with closed eyes. Significant correlations were found between the lengths of the center of pressure path with the two devices in the open-eyes condition (R = 0.44, p = 0.002). The parameters extracted by SuPerSense were significantly different among groups only when patients were divided into those with right versus left brain damage. This last result is conceivably related to the role of the right hemisphere of the brain in the analysis of spatial information.

Many studies have reported the use of wearable devices to acquire biological data for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Balance dysfunction, however, is difficult to evaluate in real time because the equilibrium function is conventionally examined using a stabilometer installed on the ground. Here, we used a wearable accelerometer that measures head motion to evaluate balance and examined whether it performs comparably to a conventional stabilometer. We constructed a simplified physical head-feet model that simultaneously records "head" motion measured using an attached wearable accelerometer and center-of-gravity motion at the "feet", which is measured using an attached stabilometer. Total trajectory length (r = 0.818, p -false discovery rate [FDR] = 0.004) and outer peripheral area (r = 0.691, p -FDR = 0.026) values measured using the wearable device and stabilometer were significantly positively correlated. Root mean square area values were not significantly correlated with wearable device stabilometry but were comparable. These results indicate that wearable, widely available, non-medical devices may be used to assess balance outside the hospital setting, and new approaches for testing balance function should be considered.

Background and Objectives: Falls are a common and serious threat to the health and independence of older adults. The decrease in functional capacity during aging means an increased risk of falls. To date, it is not known whether there is a relationship between balance and functional tests. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation between eyes-open and eyes-closed static balance with different functional tests. Materials and Methods: A correlation study was designed with 52 healthy subjects over 65 years of age. Results: Regarding the open eyes stabilometric parameters, significant correlations observed between the surface and the functional tests were weak in all cases. The correlations observed between length and the functional tests performed were moderate, except for that of the Timed Up and Go test (TUG) which was weak. No significant correlation between TUG and surface was found. Regarding the closed eyes stabilometric parameters, statistically significant moderate correlations were found between the surface and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and the Five Times Sit to Stand test (5XSST). In the case of the length with eyes closed, a statistically significant moderate correlation (rho = 0.40-0.69) was found with the SPPB and 5XSST variables, and weak correlations with the 4 m Walk Speed test (4WS) and TUG variables. Conclusions: There is a mild to moderate correlation between some functional tests and stabilometric parameters in adults over 65 years old.

Background and Objectives: Some respiratory viruses demonstrate neurotropic capacities. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has recently taken over the globe, causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on postural control in subjects who have recently recovered from the infection. Materials and Methods: Thirty-three convalescents who underwent COVID-19 within the preceding 2-4 weeks, and 35 healthy controls were enrolled. The ground reaction forces were registered with the use of a force platform during quiet standing. The analysis of the resultant center of foot pressure (COP) decomposed into rambling (RAMB) and trembling (TREMB) and sample entropy was conducted. Results: Range of TREMB was significantly increased in subjects who experienced anosmia/hyposmia during COVID-19 when the measurement was performed with closed eyes (p = 0.03). In addition, subjects who reported dyspnea during COVID-19 demonstrated significant increase of length and velocity of COP (p < 0.001), RAMB (p < 0.001), and TREMB (p < 0.001), indicating substantial changes in postural control. Conclusions: Subjects who had experienced olfactory dysfunction or respiratory distress during COVID-19 demonstrate symptoms of balance deficits after COVID-19 recovery, and the analysis using rambling-trembling decomposition method might point at less efficient peripheral control. Monitoring for neurological sequelae of COVID-19 should be considered.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) is an important risk factor for falls (in older people); however, the detailed relationship is less understood. We aimed to evaluate postural stability in bilateral HV patients. METHODS: Two groups of 20 female patients-an HV group and a C (i.e., non-HV) group-participated in this study. Evaluations were made using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the Falls Efficacy Scale (FES), track length (LNG), velocity (VEL), enveloped area (ENV), and root mean square area (RMS). RESULTS: TUG and FES scores were significantly higher and BBS scores were lower in the HV group than in the C group. LNG was significantly longer, VEL was higher, and ENV and RMS were wider in the HV group than in the C group. CONCLUSIONS: The HV group exhibited impaired walking mobility, balance, and postural stability.

PURPOSE: Evaluation of specific computerized posturographic parameters in patients with Menière's disease (MD) following the intratympanic injection of gadolinium, a contrast agent, used in radiological diagnosing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have observed 12 adult patients with unilateral Menière's Disease subjected to inner ear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination after intratympanic gadolinium injection (ITG). The diagnoses have been performed according to the guidelines of the American Academy of otolaryngology. Before and after 24 h the ITG, all patients were subjected to the clinical evaluation and computerized posturography (CP), in 4 conditions depending on open/closed eyes and with/without foam cushion under feet. RESULTS: After ITG, in the affected ear the MRI confirmed the endolymphatic hydrops revealing a thin or even disappeared perilymphatic space. The statokinesigram showed improvement of stability only with closed eyes on a foam cushion. The CP performed 24 h after the contrast intratympanic injection showed a significant reduction of Path Length and Confidence Ellipse Area, due to an improvement of vestibular function on static balance. This improvement could be directly dependent to intratympanic pressure modification mediated by volume of contrast liquid, by "columella effect". CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the absence of vestibular damage in patients undergoing intratympanic gadolinium infiltration and confirms the relationship between intratympanic pressure and vestibular stability modifications providing positive evidences for an applicative use of CP as a functional assessment to better address diagnosis and follow-up in MD patients treated with intratympanic injections.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the immediate effects of an intermittent plantar flexion static-stretching protocol on balance and plantar pressures. METHODS: The study included a sample size of 24 healthy participants (21 female and 3 male). Participants were 32.20 ± 8.08 years, 166.20 ± 8.43 cm, and 62.77 ± 9.52 kg. All participants performed an intermittent plantar flexion static-stretching protocol. Five sets (60 seconds intermittent stretch; 15 seconds for the rest time) of a passive plantar flexor stretching (70% to 90% of the point of discomfort) were performed. Static footprint analysis and a stabilometry analysis were performed before and after stretching. A P value < .05 with a CI of 95% was considered statistically significant for all tests. RESULTS: Intermittent ankle plantar static stretching resulted in a significantly greater forefoot surface contact area and lower rear foot medium and maximum plantar pressures. In addition, static stretching caused a lower displacement of the center of pressure for both eyes open and eyes closed conditions. CONCLUSION: An intermittent plantar flexor static-stretching protocol improved balance and reduced rear foot plantar pressures (maximum and medium pressures).

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Various methods are available for assessment of static and dynamic postural stability. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dynamic postural stability as measured by the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and static postural sway assessment as measured by the TechnoBody™ Pro-Kin in female soccer players. A secondary purpose was to determine side-to-side symmetry in this cohort. METHODS: A total of 18 female soccer players completed testing on the SEBT and Technobody™ Pro-Kin balance device. Outcome measures were anterior, posterior medial, and posterior lateral reaches from the SEBT and center of pressure in the x- and y-axes as well as SD of movement in the forward/backward and medial/lateral directions from the force plate on left and right legs. Bivariate correlations were determined between the 8 measures. In addition, paired Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were performed to determine similarity between limb scores. RESULTS: All measures on both the SEBT and postural sway assessment were significantly correlated when comparing dominant with nondominant lower-extremities with the exception of SD of movement in both x- and y-axes. When correlating results of the SEBT with postural sway assessment, a significant correlation was found between the SEBT right lower-extremity posterior lateral reach (r = .567, P < .05) and summed SEBT (r = .486, P < .05) and the center of pressure in the y-axis. A significant correlation was also found on the left lower-extremity, with SD of forward/backward movement and SEBT posterior medial reach (r = -.511, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic postural tests and static postural tests provide different information to the overall assessment of balance in female soccer players. Relationship between variables differed based on the subject's lower-extremity dominance.
