In Western Europe, the Early Modern Period is characterized by the rise of tenderness in romantic relationships and the emergence of companionate marriage. Despite a long research tradition, the origins of these social changes remain elusive. In this paper, we build on recent advances in behavioral sciences, showing that romantic emotional investment, which is more culturally variable than sexual attraction, enhances the cohesion of long-term relationships and increases investment in children. Importantly, this long-term strategy is considered especially advantageous when living standards are high. Here, we investigate the relationship between living standards, the emotional components of love expressed in fiction work, and behavioral outcomes related to pair bonding, such as nuptial and fertility rates. We developed natural language processing measures of "emotional investment" (tenderness) and "attraction" (passion) and computed romantic love in English plays (N = 847) as a ratio between the two. We found that living standards generally predicted and temporally preceded variations of romantic love in the Early Modern Period. Furthermore, romantic love preceded an increase in nuptial rates and a decrease in births per marriage. This suggests that increasing living standards in the Early Modern Period may have contributed to the emergence of modern romantic culture.

BACKGROUND: The association between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has been contentious in the literature. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the associations between orthodontic treatment and TMD diagnosis and diseases characteristics. METHODS: This case-control study included 291 individuals, 192 TMDs and 99 controls. All patients underwent assessment based on a questionnaire and a clinical examination according to Axis I of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD). Differences in orthodontic treatment between TMDs and controls, as well as across different TMD diagnoses within the TMD group were analysed. Patients who underwent orthodontic treatment were compared to those who did not, regarding their trauma history, bruxism, aggressive teeth brushing, level of oral hygiene, pain scores, muscle tenderness scores and subjective sleep quality. RESULTS: Of the 291 participants, 119 (40.9%) underwent orthodontic treatment and 172 (59.1%) had no orthodontics experience. Orthodontic treatment included: mandibular orthodontic treatment (102 subjects) and maxillary orthodontic treatment (113 subjects) of those 47 used a headgear. Following multivariate analysis among TMDs, orthodontic treatment was associated with a good level of oral hygiene versus poor (Odds ratio [OR]: 5.17 [1.04-25.59]), lower number of tender muscles [OR = 0.84 (0.74-0.96)] and lower (better) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores (OR = 0.86 [0.76-0.97]). None of the studied parameters maintained a statistically significant association with orthodontic treatment in the multivariate analysis among the entire study population. CONCLUSIONS: Utilising a holistic approach, this study supports the main hypothesis that orthodontic treatment is not associated with TMD diagnosis and disease characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The steam processing characteristics of chicken are a key factor in the simplicity and versatility of steamed chicken dishes. The aim of this study was to investigate in depth the changes in tenderness and water retention of marinated chicken at different slow steaming endpoint temperatures, and to further explore the effect of the evolution of protein conformations on the water status. RESULTS: The results showed that chicken samples' shear force peaked at 80 °C and decreased rapidly at 90 °C. As the steaming endpoint temperature increased between 50 and 90 °C, T21, T22, moisture content and centrifugal loss decreased, but P21, P22 and myofibril water-holding capacity showed regular changes. The electrophoretic bands and protein conformation changes showed that protein in marinated chicken underwent different degrees of denaturation, degradation and aggregation. And at 70 °C, with an increase of hydrophobic groups and crosslinking of disulfide bonds as well as an increase in the number of denatured sarcoplasmic proteins, the intermolecular network was enhanced, thus affecting the water retention. CONCLUSION: Water status of chicken meat heated at different steaming temperatures is closely related to the evolution of protein conformations. The present study serves as a robust theoretical foundation for enhancing the quality of steamed chicken products at an industrial scale. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

This meta-analysis aims to investigate the effects of residual feed intake (RFI) phenotype on performance, nutrient utilization and meat quality traits in Zebu (Bos indicus) cattle. Twenty-three peer-reviewed publications with 37 treatment means were included in the dataset. Weighted mean difference analysis compared animals categorized into low RFI (more efficient) versus medium or high RFI (less efficient) groups. Data heterogeneity via meta-regression and subgroup analysis, considering variables such as animal age, sex class, experimental duration, RFI group, dietary concentrate, and estimated metabolizable energy intake were also explored. The predominant genetic group of cattle in the dataset was Nellore (89.18%), followed by Brahman (10.81%). More efficient animals (low RFI phenotype) exhibited less dry matter intake (DMI; P < 0.010) than medium or high RFI animals (-0.95 kg vs. -0.42 kg/d). Cattle dietary crude protein and fiber digestibility were consistent across RFI groups (P > 0.05), while dietary ether extract digestibility tended to decrease (P = 0.050) in low RFI animals (-13.20 g/kg DM). Low RFI animals tended to increased (P = 0.065) ribeye area (REA) compared to the high/medium RFI groups, while carcass backfat thickness (BFT) decreased (P = 0.042) compared to high/medium RFI groups. Moreover, there was an increase (P < 0.001) of 0.22 kg in Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) and a reduction (P < 0.001) in the myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI) in low RFI animals. Meat color parameters (lightness [L*] and yellowness [b*]) and visual marbling scores were consistent (P > 0.05) across RFI groups. In conclusion, Zebu cattle classified as efficient (low RFI) exhibited reduced DMI, which improves their feed efficiency. However, BFT and meat quality parameters such as tenderness (WBSF and MFI) and redness [a*] were compromised by low RFI phenotype, highlighting the challenge of enhancing feed efficiency and meat quality traits in Zebu cattle.

Meat quality holds significant importance for both consumers and meat producers. Various factors influence meat quality, and among them, mitochondria play a crucial role. Recent studies have indicated that mitochondria can sustain their functions and viability for a certain duration in postmortem muscles. Consequently, mitochondria have an impact on oxygen consumption, energy metabolism, and apoptotic processes, which in turn affect myoglobin levels, oxidative stress, meat tenderness, fat oxidation, and protein oxidation. Ultimately, these factors influence the color, tenderness, and flavor of meat. However, there is a dearth of comprehensive summaries addressing the effects of mitochondria on postmortem muscle physiology and meat quality. Therefore, this review aims to describe the characteristics of muscle mitochondria and their potential influence on muscle. Additionally, a suitable method for isolating mitochondria is presented. Lastly, the review emphasizes the regulation of oxygen consumption, energy metabolism, and apoptosis by postmortem muscle mitochondria, and provides an overview of relevant research and recent advancements. The ultimate objective of this review is to elucidate the underlying mechanisms through which mitochondria impact meat quality.

Meat tenderness is considered the most important trait contributing to beef quality, level of consumer satisfaction, willingness to pay premium prices and industry profit. Genomic selection method would be helpful for genetic improvement of traits with low heritability and that are difficult to measure. The identification of core genes can aid genomic selection for complex traits with low heritability that are difficult to measure. We performed statistical analysis of associations between longissimus dorsi muscle tenderness and gene expression in 20 Hanwoo cattle, using Warner-Bratzler shear force and RNAseq data, respectively. We found a total of 166 core genes, from which six (ASAP1, CAPN5, ELN, SUMF2, TTC8 and MGAT4A) were regulated by 16 cis-expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) SNPs. Notably, we found that a cis-eQTL SNP of the ELN gene contained an MFZ-1 binding site in its putative promoter region. These findings provide useful information for genomic prediction of beef tenderness in Hanwoo cattle.

BACKGROUND: In some trigger finger patients, tenderness is found in the dorsal proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. The etiology and prevalence of this condition are unclear. Furthermore, surgical outcomes for trigger fingers with coexisting dorsal PIP tenderness have not been reported. This study (1) determined the prevalence and risk factors for PIP joint tenderness in trigger fingers and (2) compared postoperative outcomes for trigger fingers with and without joint tenderness. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted between August 2018 and March 2020. We enrolled 190 patients diagnosed with single-digit trigger fingers undergoing open A1 pulley release. The incidence, demographic data, and surgical outcomes of patients with dorsal PIP tenderness were investigated. Factors associated with tenderness were analyzed, including patient occupation, finger involvement, trigger finger grading, duration of symptoms, previous corticosteroid injections, and presence of diabetes mellitus. A numeric pain scale, a patient-specific functional scale, and the range of motion were evaluated preoperatively and 1, 2, and 6 weeks after surgery, with telephone follow-ups at 3 and 6 months. RESULTS: Of 190 patients, 46.8% had tenderness of the dorsal PIP joint. Patients with joint tenderness had significantly more overall postoperative pain for up to 6 weeks and reported residual minor pain for up to 3 months. The functional scale and range of motion of the 2 groups did not differ during follow-up. The only risk factor observed was the occupation of the patients. CONCLUSION: Dorsal PIP tenderness is more common in trigger fingers than previously thought. It is also associated with higher and prolonged levels of postoperative pain after A1 pulley release. Therefore, patients with pre-existing PIP tenderness should be informed about the possibility of sustaining residual minor pain for up to 3 months after surgery. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: II.

Meat tenderness is an important sensory index when consumers choose meat products, which determines the value of meat products and consumers' buying intentions. Yak meat is rich in nutrition and unique in flavor, which is favored by consumers. However, its meat has the deficiencies of low tenderness and poor taste, which has a negative impact on the value of its meat products and customer satisfaction. To identify the genes affecting the yak meat tenderness, we used RNA-seq to analyze the longissimus dorsi muscle of yaks with different tenderness, screened a total of 1120 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Meanwhile, 23 pathways were significantly enriched. By further analysis, we identified eight genes related to yak meat tenderness (WNT5A, ARID5B, SERPINE1 KLHL40, RUNX1, MAFF, RFX7 and ARID5A). Notably, SERPINE1 was involved in the significant enrichment pathways of 'complement and coagulation cascade pathway', 'HIF-1 signaling pathway' and 'AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications' which can regulate meat tenderness. This implies that SERPINE1 may play an important regulatory role among them. The DEGs associated with yak meat quality screened in this work will be helpful to identify potential biomarkers related to meat tenderness.

BACKGROUND: The immune response to breast implants after COVID-19 disease or COVID-19 vaccine administration includes acute inflammatory manifestations, capsular contracture and seroma. Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a very rare tumor in which numerous up-regulated pro-inflammatory immunological pathways activate a T cell lymphoproliferative disorder. METHODS: The first reported case of a BIA-ALCL hidden mass clinically manifesting with inflammatory signs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccinations is here described. RESULTS: Complete capsulectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy were performed and immediately after the surgical procedure local inflammatory signs disappeared; no evidence of disease was present 1 year later. CONCLUSIONS: Immunological stimulation by COVID-19 disease and vaccines may highlight some rare clinical manifestations of BIA-ALCL; persistent inflammatory symptomatology over breast implants should be investigated using second-level imaging. Tension-type headache (TTH) and migraine are two common primary headaches distinguished by clinical characteristics according to the 3rd edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders. Migraine is identified by specific features such as being more prevalent in females, being aggravated by physical activity, certain genetic factors, having photophobia, phonophobia, nausea, vomiting, or aura, and responding to specific drugs. Nonetheless, TTH and migraine share some common characteristics, such as onset occurring in the 20 s, and being triggered by psychological factors like stress, moderate pain severity, and mild nausea in chronic TTH. Both conditions involve the trigeminovascular system in their pathophysiology. However, distinguishing between TTH and migraine in clinical practice, research, and epidemiological studies can be challenging, as there is a lack of specific diagnostic tests and biomarkers. Moreover, both conditions may coexist, further complicating the diagnostic process. This review aims to explore the similarities and differences in the pathophysiology, epidemiology, burden and disability, comorbidities, and responses to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments of TTH and migraine. The review also discusses future research directions to address the diagnostic challenges and improve the understanding and management of these conditions.

Little is known about the performance, carcass, and meat traits of locally adapted cattle in Brazil. This study aimed to compare the growth, slaughter, and carcass traits as well as meat quality of two local breeds (Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro) with the Nelore breed. Fifteen 30-month-old steers of each breed were weighted (Curraleiro Pé-Duro = 264.80 kg; Nelore = 346.80 kg; Pantaneiro = 316.20 kg) and raised in a feedlot condition for 112 days, with measurements to assess growth and slaughter, visual and carcass and meat traits. Data were submitted to variance and multivariate analyses. Nelore and Curraleiro Pé-Duro had similar Gluteus medius depths. Pantaneiro and Curraleiro Pé-Duro were superior for leg compactness index (P < 0.05) and had higher eye muscle area than Nelore (P < 0.05). Although there was no difference in daily weight gain and slaughter weight between breeds, Curraleiro Pé-Duro had a lower initial weight (264.80 kg) when compared to Nelore (346.80 kg; P < 0.05). Nelore and Curraleiro Pé-Duro deposited more fat than Pantaneiro (P < 0.05), while Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro had more muscle than Nelore (P < 0.05), which also had more bone and a higher percentage of second-quality cuts (P < 0.05). Meat from Nelore also showed lower succulence than Pantaneiro (P < 0.05) and higher shear force than the other breeds (P < 0.05). Pantaneiro's meat had the most capacity to retain water (P < 0.05), lower shear force (P < 0.05), and was more succulent (P < 0.05) when compared to the other breeds. Multivariate analysis showed that Pantaneiro, Curraleiro Pé-Duro, and Nelore breeds can be considered distinct in growth, carcass, and meat traits, with the local breeds showing superior meat traits. The local breeds Curraleiro Pé-Duro and Pantaneiro presented characteristics similar or better to those of the Nelore, proving to be animals with great productive potential and generate high meat quality under feedlot conditions.

BACKGROUND: Despite the World Health Organization calling for sexuality to be recognized as an aspect of well-being, no studies have explored sexual activity and physical tenderness in older adults aged ≥ 75 years in Belgium or those aged ≥ 85 years worldwide. AIM: To assess the prevalence and predictors of sexual activity and physical tenderness in a sample of older adults. METHODS: Using data from a Belgian cross-sectional study on sexual violence (UN-MENAMAIS), information on sexual activity, physical tenderness, and associated characteristics was collected during structured face-to-face interviews with older adults living in the community, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes. Cluster random probability sampling with a random route-finding approach was used to select the participants. OUTCOMES: Current sexual activity and physical tenderness in the previous 12 months, sociodemographic characteristics, chronological age, subjective age, number of sexual partners, sexual satisfaction, attitudes toward sexuality in later life, quality of life, and lifetime sexual victimisation. RESULTS: Among the 511 participants included, 50.3% were in a relationship, mainly living with their partner; 31.3% indicated they were sexually active; and 47.3% of sexually inactive participants reported having experienced forms of physical tenderness in the previous 12 months. Sexual activity was associated with the presence of a partner, satisfaction with sexual life, permissive attitudes regarding sexuality in later life, a younger age, and a lack of disability. Physical tenderness was associated with the presence of a partner, community residency, and permissive attitudes regarding sexuality in later life. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Raising awareness among the general population, healthcare professionals, and older adults about sexuality in later life could contribute to ending this taboo and should therefore be a priority for society. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: Our study fills a gap in the literature regarding sexual activity and physical tenderness in older adults aged ≥ 70 years, including respondents aged up to 99 years. Additionally, we explored different forms of sexual expression beyond intercourse, and face-to-face interviews contributed to the quality of the collected data. The main limitation of this study was the sample size, although the findings were similar to recent statistical indicators in Belgium. CONCLUSION: One in 3 older adults aged ≥ 70 years living in Belgium are sexually active. These findings provide an opportunity to inform the general public and older adults about later life sexuality and to educate healthcare professionals about aging sexuality to increase discussions and avoid assumptions of asexuality in later life. OBJECTIVE: To identify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) predictors (cartilage [C], osteophytes [O] and meniscus [M] scores) of prevalent and 3-year incident medial tibiofemoral (MTF) and lateral tibiofemoral (LTF) knee joint tenderness and patellofemoral (PF) grind.  METHODS: Population-based knee pain cohort aged 40-79 was assessed at baseline (N = 255), 3- and 7-year follow-up (N = 108 × 2 = 216). COM scores were measured at 6/8/6 subregions respectively. Age-sex-BMI adjusted logistic models predicted prevalence versus relevant COM predictors (medial, lateral or patellar / trochlear groove scores). Fully adjusted models also included all relevant COM predictors. Binary generalized estimating equations models predicting 3-year incidence were also adjusted for individual follow-up time between cycles. RESULTS: Significant predictors of prevalent MTF tenderness: medial femoral cartilage (fully adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.84; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.11, 3.05), female (aOR = 3.05; 1.67, 5.58), BMI (aOR = 1.53 per 5 units BMI; 1.10, 2.11). Predictors of prevalent LTF tenderness: female (aOR = 2.18; 1.22, 3.90). There were no predictors of prevalent PF grind in the fully adjusted model. However, medial patellar osteophytes was predictive in the age-sex-BMI adjusted model. There were no predictors of 3-year incident MTF tenderness. Predictors of 3-year incident LTF tenderness: female (aOR = 3.83; 1.25, 11.77). Predictors of 3-year incident PF grind: lateral patellar osteophytes (aOR = 4.82; 1.69, 13.77). In the age-sex-BMI adjusted model, patellar cartilage was also a predictor. CONCLUSION: We explored potential MRI predictors of prevalent and 3-year incident MTF/LTF knee joint tenderness and PF grind. These findings could guide preemptive strategies aimed at reducing these symptoms in the present and future (3-year incidence).

BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to examine the expression profiles of mitochondrial proteins in at-death and 24 h postmortem (PM) using tandem mass tag (TMT) approach to characterize the mitochondria possible mechanisms that are affiliated with tenderization. RESULTS: Results showed that the tender meat at 24 h PM emerged with more serious mitochondrial damage. Altogether 456 mitochondrial proteins were identified, including 442 down-regulated and 14 up-regulated proteins. These differentially-expressed proteins were primarily involved in the progress of PM energy metabolism, apoptosis, and the morphological alterations of mitochondrial. Among them, 47 subunits (such as NDUFA2, COX4I1, and ATP5PB) were annotated into the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. VDAC1, VDAC2, and VDAC3 involving in the damage of MPTP, and IMMT, CHCHD3, APOL and APOO modulating the morphology of mitochondria, and DIABLO and AIFM1 released from mitochondria affect caspase's activation. HSPD1 and HSPE1 involved in apoptosis, mitochondrial physiological and morphological alterations. CONCLUSION: The earlier-mentioned proteins were validated as potential indicators of tenderness regulated by mitochondrial damage. These results highlighted that mitochondrial damage possibly participate in PM tenderization of beef muscles by energy metabolism and cell apoptosis status. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of selection for body growth and its association with carcass and meat quality traits in the red-winged tinamou. Two experimental groups were selected based on the selection index: selection group with a higher index (TinamouS) and commercial group with a lower index (TinamouC). Weight at 180 days and slaughter weight were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the TinamouS group, as were hot carcass weight, skinless breast weight, wing weight, and thigh and drumstick weight. The meat quality traits or sensory attributes did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) between groups. A significant positive correlation (0.59; p < 0.05) was found between shear force and chewability and a significant negative correlation (- 0.59; p < 0.05) between aroma intensity and strange aroma. The present study suggests that the selection index promotes greater body growth and preserves meat quality and sensory traits in red-winged tinamou.

BACKGROUND: As a new technology, electronic wrist-ankle acupuncture (E-WAA) combines the advantages of wrist-ankle acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, but the analgesic effect and mechanism need to be clarified. The purpose of this study was to identify the pain modulation caused by E-WAA by evaluating the response of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) from the perspective of neurophysiology. METHODS: Fifty male volunteers (age 25.00 ± 1.05 years) with trapezius myofascial pain syndrome were randomly allocated into intervention group (E-WAA treatment) or sham control group at a 1:1 ratio. An outcome evaluation system was used to induce tenderness on the Jianjing point and record the pain value. A multichannel functional near-infrared spectroscope was used to detect the PFC activation during tenderness before and after treatment to demonstrate the neuromodulation mechanism. A general linear model and t-test (p < 0.05) were used to analyze the difference in the oxyhemoglobin (HbO) concentration and pain value. RESULTS: In the intervention group, the pain value of volunteers decreased significantly (p = 0.017) after E-WAA treatment, whereas there was no statistical difference (p = 0.082) in the sham group. Before treatment, the frontopolar (FP) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) were the activation areas of the PFC. The E-WAA treatment then suppressed the activation of the two areas. The HbO concentration of the FP and DLPFC changed from a sharp rise during tenderness to not changing with tenderness stimulation. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that the E-WAA have a great analgesic effect. The FP and DLPFC were relative to the analgesia neuromodulation induced by the E-WAA.

The objective of this study was to investigate the protease family caspases in skeletal muscle and their potential contribution to postmortem proteolysis and meat tenderization. Nine yaks were slaughtered, and samples of Longissimus dorsal were injected with AC-DEVD-CHO at a ratio of 1:1 (w/v) and then stored at 4 °C for 2, 6, 12, 24, 72, and 120 h. Results indicate that the morphological changes of the muscle fibers are significantly obstructed, which is not conducive to the subsequent degradation of proteins. After inhibiting the activity of Caspase- 3, the activity of Caspase-8 and 9 and the energy metabolism was affected. In the case of without inhibition of caspase, the pH value decreased and then increased. The meat color and the water retention are better, the muscle fiber skeleton protein degradation is remarkable, the tenderness is improved. Furthermore, yak meat tenderness was improved by apoptotic pathway during aging.

The study was undertaken to investigate the effect of muscle, thermal treatment, and ageing on the beef quality. The longissimus lumborum (LL) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles were taken from Holstein-Friesian young bull carcasses then subjected to steam-cooking and sous-vide after 9 and 14-d wet ageing. It was shown that characteristics of cooked beef were the most significantly affected by thermal treatment method. Using sous-vide provided beef with lower shear force and cooking loss values, darker, and more red colour and more beneficial sensory quality. LL and SM muscles showed a similar quality when subjected to the same thermal treatment method after the same ageing time. It is possible to obtain juicy and tender beef from Holstein-Friesian bulls after 9-d ageing and sous-vide treatment.

BACKGROUND: The use of bulls rather than steers from the dairy herd offers a more profitable and environmentally friendly option; however, the beef eating quality from bulls is an issue of concern. This study assessed the effect of two tenderization techniques - pelvic suspension and ageing - on three different muscles of Holstein Friesian males from two different production systems. RESULTS: The results indicate that a production system based on steers slaughtered at 24 months (S24) produced beef with better eating quality than from bulls slaughtered at 19 months (B19) when tenderization techniques were not applied. Instrumental texture of longissimus thoracis and gluteus medius muscles was improved with ageing and/or pelvic suspension, with both tenderization techniques exerting greater impact on B19 meat. No differences were found in semitendinosus muscle due to suspension method, whereas ageing for longer than 14 days decreased its instrumental tenderness. Sensory results indicate that, after 14 days of ageing, panellists still preferred meat from S24, and they could differentiate between pelvic and traditional suspension. CONCLUSION: Tenderization methodologies should be optimized for each production system and muscle; however, both panel and instrumental texture results indicate that eating quality of beef from either production systems is acceptable after 14 days of ageing, or even earlier if the suspension method is applied. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Headache affects 90-99% of the population. Based on the question "Do you think that you never ever in your whole life have had a headache?" 4% of the population say that they have never experienced a headache. The rarity of never having had a headache suggests that distinct biological and environmental factors may be at play. We hypothesized that people who have never experienced a headache had a lower general pain sensitivity than controls. METHODS: We included 99 male participants, 47 headache free participants and 52 controls, in an observer blinded nested case-control study. We investigated cold pain threshold and heat pain threshold using a standardized quantitative sensory testing protocol, pericranial tenderness with total tenderness score and pain tolerance with the cold pressor test. Differences between the two groups were assessed with the unpaired Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U test as appropriate. RESULTS: There was no difference in age, weight or mean arterial pressure between headache free participants and controls. We found no difference in pain detection threshold, pericranial tenderness or pain tolerance between headache free participants and controls. CONCLUSION: Our study clearly shows that freedom from headache is not caused by a lower general pain sensitivity. The results support the hypothesis that headache is caused by specific mechanisms, which are present in the primary headache disorders, rather than by a decreased general sensitivity to painful stimuli.
