RESUMO

The distribution of farm locations and sizes is paramount to characterize patterns of disease spread. With some regions undergoing rapid intensification of livestock production, resulting in increased clustering of farms in peri-urban areas, measuring changes in the spatial distribution of farms is crucial to design effective interventions. However, those data are not available in many countries, their generation being resource-intensive. Here, we develop a farm distribution model (FDM), which allows the prediction of locations and sizes of poultry farms in countries with scarce data. The model combines (i) a Log-Gaussian Cox process model to simulate the farm distribution as a spatial Poisson point process, and (ii) a random forest model to simulate farm sizes (i.e. the number of animals per farm). Spatial predictors were used to calibrate the FDM on intensive broiler and layer farm distributions in Bangladesh, Gujarat (Indian state) and Thailand. The FDM yielded realistic farm distributions in terms of spatial clustering, farm locations and sizes, while providing insights on the factors influencing these distributions. Finally, we illustrate the relevance of modelling realistic farm distributions in the context of epidemic spread by simulating pathogen transmission on an array of spatial distributions of farms. We found that farm distributions generated from the FDM yielded spreading patterns consistent with simulations using observed data, while random point patterns underestimated the probability of large outbreaks. Indeed, spatial clustering increases vulnerability to epidemics, highlighting the need to account for it in epidemiological modelling studies. As the FDM maintains a realistic distribution of farm location and sizes, its use to inform mathematical models of disease transmission is particularly relevant for regions where these data are not available.

Campylobacteriosis and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are global public health concerns. Africa is estimated to have the world's highest incidence of campylobacteriosis and a relatively high prevalence of AMR in Campylobacter spp. from humans and animals. Few studies have compared Campylobacter spp. isolated from humans and poultry in Africa using whole-genome sequencing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We explored the population structure and AMR of 178 Campylobacter isolates from East Africa, 81 from patients with diarrhea in Kenya and 97 from 56 poultry samples in Tanzania, collected during 2006-2017. Sequence type diversity was high in both poultry and human isolates, with some sequence types in common. The estimated prevalence of multidrug resistance, defined as resistance to >3 antimicrobial classes, was higher in poultry isolates (40.9%, 95% credible interval 23.6%-59.4%) than in human isolates (2.5%, 95% credible interval 0.3%-6.8%), underlining the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in livestock systems.

High pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) is a rapidly evolving virus causing significant economic and environmental harm. Wild birds are a key viral reservoir and an important source of viral incursions into animal populations, including poultry. However, we lack a thorough understanding of which species drive incursions and whether this changes over time. We explored associations between the abundances of 152 avian species and outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry premises across Great Britain between October 2021 and January 2023. Spatial generalized additive models were used, with species abundance distributions sourced from eBird. Associations were investigated at the species-specific level and across species aggregations. During autumn/winter, associations were generally strongest with waterbirds such as ducks and geese; however, we also found significant associations in groups such as non-native gamebirds and rapid change in species-specific associations over time. Our results demonstrate the value of citizen science to rapidly explore wild species as potential facilitators of disease incursions into well-monitored populations, especially in regions where viral surveillance in wild species is limited. This can be a critical step towards prioritizing targeted surveillance that could inform species-specific biosecurity measures; particularly for HPAIV, which has undergone sudden shifts in host range and continues to rapidly evolve.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic infection that causes production losses and death in the chicken industry. A cross-sectional study was conducted on exotic chicken breeds reared at the Jigjiga poultry farm from November 2022 to May 2023 to estimate the occurrence, associated risk factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The chickens were selected using systematic random sampling techniques. A total of 384 cloacal swabs were collected aseptically and transported to the laboratory for analysis. For statistical analysis, STATA® version 14.0 statistical software was used. RESULTS: From 384 examined faecal samples, 258 (67.2%) prevalences of Klebsiella pneumoniae were found. Furthermore, the association of the study's risk factors with the prevalence of Klebsiella pneumoniae was explored, and no statistically significant association was identified between sex and age. Nonetheless, relative prevalence at the age level was higher in chickens aged 12 months (67.6%) and Sasso breeds (90.0%). Similarly, male chickens and those raised for meat and egg production had a high prevalence rate of 72.5 and 75.8%, respectively. A total of 30 isolated Klebsiella pneumoniae colonies were tested in vitro for antibiotic sensitivity for six drugs, and it was shown that Klebsiella pneumoniae is moderately sensitive to Penicillin G (43.3%) while having higher resistance to Oxytetracycline (80.0%). CONCLUSIONS: The current findings revealed that the research area had the highest prevalence of Klebsiella pneumoniae, and the isolates were resistant to commonly used drugs in the study area. Thus, a long-term intervention plan, thorough research to determine a nationwide status, as well as further multi-drug resistance patterns and molecular characterization, were urged.

Salmonella is a zoonotic pathogen posing a serious risk to the farming industry and public health due to food animals serving as reservoirs for future contamination and spread of Salmonella. The present study is designed to monitor the contamination status of Salmonella in duck farms and the main control points during breeding. 160 strains of duck-derived Salmonella were isolated from the 736 samples (cloacal swabs, feces, water, feed, soil, air and dead duck embryos) collected in southwest Shandong Province and the province's surrounding area. The percentage of Salmonella-positive samples collected was 21.74 % (160/736), and the greatest prevalence from duck embryo samples (40.00 %, 36/90). These Salmonella were classified into 23 serotypes depending on their O and H antigens, in which S. Typhimurium (30.15 %), S. Kottbus (13.97 %) and S. Enteritidis (10.29 %) were the prevailing serotypes. Subsequently, the molecular subtyping was done. Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) analysis showed that 41 strains of S. Typhimurium and 14 strains of S. Enteritidis were classified into 13 and 3 genotypes, respectively. 19 S. Kottbus isolates from different sources featured ST1546, ST198, ST321, and ST1690 by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis, among which ST1546 belongs to S. Kottbus was a new ST. The minimum spanning tree analysis based on the two CRISPR loci and seven MLST loci from all S. Typhimurium, S. Enteritidis and S. Kottbus isolates revealed that duck embryos, feed and water were key control points to the spread of Salmonella along the breeding chain. Meanwhile, the emergence of S. Kottbus in duck flocks was considered a potential public health hazard.

Pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli infecting poultry, commonly called avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) present significant risks, to the health of both poultry and the general public. This systematic review aimed to examine the prevalence of APEC serotypes, sequence types (ST), phylogenetic groups, virulence factors and antibiotic resistance patterns based on 189 research papers sourced from PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest. Then, data were extracted from the selected studies and analyzed to assess the global distribution and characteristics of APEC strains. The metaprop codes in the Meta and Metafor packages of R as implemented in RStudio were then used to conduct meta-analysis. Among APEC strains identified from these different research reports serogroup O78 had the highest overall prevalence (16 %), followed by serogroups O2 (10 %), and O117 (8 %). The most common ST profiles were ST117 (20 %), ST140 (15 %), ST95 (12 %), and ST131 (9 %). ST117 and ST140 are known reservoirs for pathogenic E. coli in humans. Moreover, phylogenetic assessment highlighted the prevalence of phylogroups A, A1, F, D, and B2 among APEC strains indicating diversity in phylogenetic origin within poultry populations. The presence of antimicrobial resistance was notable among APEC strains against antibiotics such as tetracyclines, penicillins, and cephalosporins. This resistance may be linked to use of antimicrobials in poultry production in certain regions presenting challenges for both animal health management and human infection control. Analysis of sequences linked to adherence or virulence indicated that genes encoding adhesins (csg, fimC), iron/metal uptake (sitB, sitC, iroD) and cytotoxicity (estB, hlyF), and serum resistance (traT, iss) were highly prevalent. These factors have been reported to contribute to APEC host colonization and virulence in poultry. In summary, this overview of the characteristics of APEC highlights the pressing importance of monitoring and implementing management approaches to reduce antimicrobial resistance considering that a phylogenetic diversity of E. coli strains causes infections in both poultry and humans and represents a risk to both animal and public health. Further, determining the major conserved aspects and predominant mechanisms of virulence of APEC is critical for improving diagnostics and developing preventative measures to reduce the burden of infection caused by pathogenic E. coli in poultry and lower risks associated with foodborne transmission of E. coli to humans through poultry and poultry products.

The intensification of livestock farming has led to the widespread use of massive amounts of antibiotics worldwide. Poultry production, including white meat, eggs and the use of their manure as fertiliser, has been identified as one of the most crucial reservoirs for the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria, including E. coli in poultry as an important opportunistic pathogen representing the greatest biological hazard to human and wildlife health. Thus, this study aimed to analyse E. coli in the faecal carriage of healthy poultry flocks and to investigate the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of antimicrobial resistance, including integrons genes and phylogenetic groups. A total of 431 cloacal swabs from apparently healthy poultry from four regions in Eastern Algeria from December 2021 to October 2022. 360 E. coli were isolated; from broilers (n = 151), broiler breeders (n = 91), laying hens (n = 72), and breeding hens (n = 46). Among this, 281 isolates exhibited multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype, 17 of the 360 E. coli isolates exhibited ESBL, and one isolate exhibited both ESBL/pAmpC. A representative collection of 183 among 281 MDR E. coli was selected for further analysis by PCR to detect genes encoding resistance to different antibiotics, and sequencing was performed on all positive PCR products of blaCTX-M and blaCMY-2 genes. Phylogenetic groups were determined in 80 E. coli isolates (20 from each of the four kinds of poultry). The blaCTX-M gene was found in 16 (94.11 %) ESBL-producing E. coli isolates within 11 strains co-expressing the blaSHV gene and 8 strains co-expressing the blaTEM gene. Sequence analysis showed frequent diversity in CTX-M-group-1, with blaCTX-M-15 being the most predominant (n = 11), followed by blaCTX-M-1 (n = 5). The blaCMY-2 gene was detected only in one ESBL/pAmpC isolate. Among the 183 tested isolates, various antimicrobial resistance genes were found (number of strains) blaTEM (n = 121), blaSHV (n = 12), tetA (n = 100), tetB (n = 29), sul1(n = 67), sul2 (n = 32), qnrS (n = 45), qnrB (n = 10), qnrA (n = 1), catA1(n = 13), aac-(6')-Ib (n = 3). Furthermore, class 1 and class 2 integrons were found in 113 and 2 E. coli, respectively. The isolates were classified into multiple phylogroups, including A (35 %), B1 (27.5 %), B2 and D each (18.75 %). The detection of integrons and different classes of resistance genes in the faecal carriage of healthy poultry production indicates that commensal E. coli could potentially act as a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance, posing a significant One Health challenge encompassing the interconnected domains of human, animal health and the environment. Here, we present the first investigation to describe the diversity of blaCTX-M producing E. coli isolates with widespread detection of CTX-M-15 and CTX-M-1 in healthy breeders (Broiler and breeding hens) in Eastern Algeria.

BACKGROUND: Reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) is an oncogenic immunosuppressive retrovirus that infects different kinds of avian species; posing significant economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. METHODS: In Egypt, there is an unidentified disease associated with the runting-stunting syndrome with neoplasia, suspected to be REV, that has been continuously monitored in several breeder flocks. To diagnose and analyze REV by cell cultures, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), histopathological investigation, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, and sequencing analysis, 200 blood samples, and 50 tissue specimens were collected. The current study targets the occurrence and genetic characteristics of a viral neoplastic disease, resembling REV infection, circulating in breeder flocks from 2022 to 2023 in the Ismailia, El-Sharqia, and El-Dakahliya governorates. RESULT: Here, REV was isolated on chicken embryo fibroblast cell culture; exhibiting cell aggregation, rounding, and cell detachments. Collectively, only 70 serum samples were positive for anti-REV antibodies with seroprevalence rates of 35% based on the ELISA test. The histopathological observation demonstrated lymphoreticular tumors in the liver, spleen, and other examined organs. The immunohistochemical staining method confirmed the REV-positive signals in all examined organs (liver, kidney, spleen, bursa, ovaries) except for the heart. The PCR assay of the LTR gene assessed 370 base pairs with only 5 positive samples with a percentage of 16.6%. Three positive samples were further sequenced and submitted to the Genbank under accession numbers (PP763709, PP763710, PP763711). Phylogenetic analysis of the REV-LTR gene showed that our three isolates (Sharquia-1-REV, Ismilia-2-REV, Mansoura-3-REV) are REV subtype III which predominantly circulated in breeders in Egypt. These three isolates are highest similar to American, Chinese, and Taiwanese REV reference strains, and other Egyptian strains with nucleotide identity percentages of 100%, 99%, and 99%; respectively, and on the amino acid identity level were with (99-100%), (98%, 99%), (99%, 100%); respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study established that REV infection was extensively distributed in the breeders and became one of the causes of the clinical outbreaks of tumors, raising awareness of REV as the causative agent of avian oncogenic disease in Egypt.

As part of the response to the highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus outbreak in U.S. cattle and poultry and the associated human cases, CDC and partners are monitoring influenza A virus levels and detection of the H5 subtype in wastewater. Among 48 states and the District of Columbia that performed influenza A testing of wastewater during May 12-July 13, 2024, a weekly average of 309 sites in 38 states had sufficient data for analysis, and 11 sites in four states reported high levels of influenza A virus. H5 subtype testing was conducted at 203 sites in 41 states, with H5 detections at 24 sites in nine states. For each detection or high level, CDC and state and local health departments evaluated data from other influenza surveillance systems and partnered with wastewater utilities and agriculture departments to investigate potential sources. Among the four states with high influenza A virus levels detected in wastewater, three states had corresponding evidence of human influenza activity from other influenza surveillance systems. Among the 24 sites with H5 detections, 15 identified animal sources within the sewershed or adjacent county, including eight milk-processing inputs. Data from these early investigations can help health officials optimize the use of wastewater surveillance during the upcoming respiratory illness season.

In 2020, an outbreak of Salmonella Hadar illnesses was linked to contact with non-commercial, privately owned (backyard) poultry including live chickens, turkeys, and ducks, resulting in 848 illnesses. From late 2020 to 2021, this Salmonella Hadar strain caused an outbreak that was linked to ground turkey consumption. Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) analysis determined that the Salmonella Hadar isolates detected during the outbreak linked to backyard poultry and the outbreak linked to ground turkey were closely related genetically (within 0-16 alleles). Epidemiological and traceback investigations were unable to determine how Salmonella Hadar detected in backyard poultry and ground turkey were linked, despite this genetic relatedness. Enhanced molecular characterization methods, such as analysis of the pangenome of Salmonella isolates, might be necessary to understand the relationship between these two outbreaks. Similarly, enhanced data collection during outbreak investigations and further research could potentially aid in determining whether these transmission vehicles are truly linked by a common source and what reservoirs exist across the poultry industries that allow Salmonella Hadar to persist. Further work combining epidemiological data collection, more detailed traceback information, and genomic analysis tools will be important for monitoring and investigating future enteric disease outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the presence of Chlamydia psittaci in poultry and the environment in live poultry wholesale markets in Changsha during 2021-2022 and conducted a phylogenetic analysis to understand its distribution in this market. METHODS: In total, 483 samples were analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction and 17 C. psittaci-positive samples using high-throughput sequencing, BLAST similarity, and phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-two out of 483 poultry and environmental samples were positive for C. psittaci (overall positivity rate: 4.55%) with no difference in positivity rates over 12 months. Chlamydia psittaci was detected at 11 sampling points (overall positivity rate: 27.5%), including chicken, duck, and pigeon/chicken/duck/goose shops, with pigeon shops having the highest positivity rate (46.67%). The highest positivity rates were found in sewage (12.5%), poultry fecal (7.43%), cage swab (6.59%), avian pharyngeal/cloacal swab (3.33%), and air (2.29%) samples. The ompA sequences were identified in two strains of C. psittaci, which were determined to bear genotype B using phylogenetic analysis. Thus, during monitoring, C. psittaci genotype B was detected in the poultry and environmental samples from the poultry wholesale market in Changsha. CONCLUSIONS: To address the potential zoonotic threat, C. psittaci monitoring programs in live poultry markets should be enhanced.

Avian reovirus (ARV) has been continuously affecting the poultry industry in Pennsylvania (PA) in recent years. This report provides our diagnostic investigation on monitoring ARV field variants from broiler chickens in Pennsylvania. Genomic characterization findings of 72 ARV field isolates obtained from broiler cases during the last 6 years indicated that six distinct cluster variant strains (genotype I-VI), which were genetically diverse and distant from the vaccine and vaccine-related field strains, continuously circulated in PA poultry. Most of the variants clustered within genotype V (24/72, 33.3%), followed by genotype II (16/72, 22.2%), genotype IV (13/72, 18.1%), genotype III (13/72, 18.1%), genotype VI (05/72, 6.94%), and genotype I (1/72, 1.38%). The amino acid identity between 72 field variants and the vaccine strains (1133, 1733, 2408, 2177) varied from 45.3% to 99.7%, while the difference in amino acid counts ranged from 1-164. Among the field variants, the amino acid identity and count difference ranged from 43.3% to 100% and 0 to 170, respectively. Variants within genotype V had maximum amino acid identity (94.7-100%), whereas none of the variants within genotypes II and VI were alike. These findings indicate the continuing occurrence of multiple ARV genotypes in the environment.

Salmonellosis represents a significant economic and public health concern for the poultry industry in Africa, leading to substantial economic losses due to mortality, reduced productivity, and food safety problems. However, comprehensive information on the burden of poultry salmonellosis at the continental level is scarce. To address this gap, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to consolidate information on the prevalence and circulating serotypes of poultry salmonellosis in African countries. This involved the selection and review of 130 articles published between 1984 and 2021. A detailed systematic review protocol was structured according to Cochrane STROBE and PRISMA statement guideline. From the 130 selected articles from 23 different African countries, the overall pooled prevalence estimate (PPE) of poultry salmonellosis in Africa was found to be 14.4% (95% CI = 0.145-0.151). Cameroon reported the highest PPE at 71.9%. The PPE was notably high in meat and meat products at 23%. The number of research papers reporting poultry salmonellosis in Africa has shown a threefold increase from 1984 to 2021. Salmonella Enteritidis and Typhimurium were the two most prevalent serotypes reported in 18 African countries. Besides, Salmonella Kentucky, Virchow, Gallinarum, and Pullorum were also widely reported. Western Africa had the highest diversity of reported Salmonella serotypes (141), in contrast to southern Africa, which reported only 27 different serotypes. In conclusion, poultry salmonellosis is highly prevalent across Africa, with a variety of known serotypes circulating throughout the continent. Consequently, it is crucial to implement strategic plans for the prevention and control of Salmonella in Africa.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS The pooled sample prevalence of poultry salmonellosis in Africa is high (14.4%).The highest PPE was recorded in meat and meat products.Salmonella serotypes of zoonotic importance were found in all sample types.Salmonella Enteritidis and Typhimurium are common serotypes spreading in Africa.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Samples of suspected FAdV-infected waterfowl from farms in Shandong Province were collected from 2019 to 2022.Single infections with FAdV were less frequent than mixed infections.477 out of 792 samples (60.23%) tested positive for FAdV nucleic acids.Detection rate of FAdV was 65.47% in fattening duck farms, 55.73% in breeder duck farms and 54.55% in fattening geese farms.

Worldwide outbreaks make infections with pathogenic strains of Enterococcus cecorum (EC) one of the most important diseases in the broiler industry. Although research has increased knowledge about the pathogen, the transmission is not fully understood. Samples from different locations were collected from two broiler farms in Germany over a total of six production cycles. Samples were collected at days 1, 5, 10, 15, 21, 27, 34, 41 post-hatch and after cleaning and disinfection (C&D). A total of 1017 samples were collected from 25 different locations on the farms. Samples were analysed in the laboratory for EC by quantitative real-time PCR. Overall, 7.5% of the samples were positive. The probabilities for positive and negative samples did not differ between the farms. The number of findings differed significantly between the cycles. Compared to other samples, the chances of detecting EC in faecal samples were significantly higher. Most positive samples were found in the last week of the production periods, indicating an accumulation of EC in the barn environment. After C&D, positive PCR results were obtained in four out of 14 locations. A re-introduction from contaminated environment seemed possible. However, one pooled faecal sample was positive 1 day post-hatch. The locations that showed positive results after C&D and the positive faecal sample 1 day post-hatch indicated the persistence of EC in broiler houses of clinically healthy flocks that could lead to potential horizontal transmission routes. The present study detected potential EC sources and may help to improve hygienic measures to avoid transmissions.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTSMethodology is suitable to detect EC during production and after C&D.Locations were detected that may serve as a reservoir for EC.Cycles with fewer positive samples were observed.Cleaning and disinfection had a major impact on the detection of EC.

Beside biosecurity, vaccination is important for Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) control as it has been shown to contribute to the reduction of economic impact and, experimentally, also lessens horizontal transmission. In this study, the effect of MS live vaccination on horizontal transmission was quantified under field conditions by analysing 4-year MS monitoring data from non-MS-vaccinated broiler and layer breeders and MS-vaccinated broiler breeders with good biosecurity in single-age housing systems. Flocks were monitored at 20 and 30 weeks of age and every 12 weeks thereafter. At every sampling, 60 blood samples or 24 tracheal swabs were tested using rapid plate agglutination test and ELISA serially or MS DIVA PCR, respectively. The MS incidence rate was calculated and the association with vaccination was analysed by logistic regression. The average MS incidence rate per 1000 weeks was 11.6 cases for non-MS-vaccinated broiler breeders and decreased from 29.6 to 5.6 cases with successive vaccinated production cycles. In non-MS-vaccinated layer breeders it was 3.6. A significant negative association with MS incidence was found after vaccinating four to six successive production cycles compared to non-MS-vaccinated or only one production cycle vaccinated breeders (odds ratio (OR) = 0.23, P = 0.05 & OR = 0.12, P = 0.01, respectively). A significant negative association with MS in non-MS-vaccinated layer breeders (OR = 0.29, P = 0.00) was observed compared to non-MS-vaccinated broiler breeders, possibly due to more controlled contact structures within the layer breeder industry. The results suggest that vaccination and control of contacts contribute to the reduction of between-farm MS transmission.

Coccidiosis, caused by parasites of the genus Eimeria, is a significant economic burden to the poultry industry. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis to evaluate the financial losses associated with Eimeria infection in chickens in Algeria, relying on data provided by key stakeholders in the Algerian poultry industry to assess sub-clinical as well as clinical impact. We employed the updated 2020 version of a model established to estimate the cost of coccidiosis in chickens, taking into consideration specific cultural and technical aspects of poultry farming in Algeria. The findings predict economic losses due to coccidiosis in chickens of approximately £86.7 million in Algeria for the year 2022, representing £0.30 per chicken raised. The majority of the cost was attributed to morbidity (74.9%), emphasizing the substantial economic impact of reduced productivity including decreased bodyweight gain and increased feed conversion ratio. Costs associated with control measures made up 20.5% of the total calculated cost, with 4.6% of the cost related to mortality. These figures provide a clear indication of the scope and economic impact of Eimeria infection of chickens in Algeria, illustrating the impact of practices common across North Africa. They underscore the ongoing requirement for effective preventive and control measures to reduce these financial losses while improving productivity and welfare, ensuring the economic sustainability of the Algerian poultry industry.

The infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is a significant pathogen affecting the poultry industry worldwide. Its epidemiological history has been marked by the emergence of strains with different antigenic, pathogenic, and genetic features, some of which have shown notable spread potential. The A2dB1b genotype, also known as novel variant, has become widespread and gained increased relevance in IBDV epidemiology. This genotype was described in China in the 2010s and rapidly spread in Asia and Africa. The present study describes the circulation of the A2dB1b genotype in Argentina. Applying a next-generation sequencing approach, we obtained the complete coding sequence of 18 Argentine viruses. The high level of genomic homogeneity observed amongst these viruses, their monophyletic clustering in both partial and complete segments A and B derived phylogenies, and their close relatedness to some Chinese strains suggest that a unique transcontinental spread event from China to Argentina occurred recently. The apparent success of the A2dB1b genotype spreading throughout Asia, Africa, and South America may partially be due to specific amino acid characteristics. Novel residues in the hypervariable region of VP2 may help A2dB1b IBDVs evade the protection elicited by the applied commercial vaccines. Our findings underscore the importance of continuous characterization of field samples and evaluation of the control measures currently applied to fight against this specific IBDV genotype.
