Motion perception is a fundamental sensory task that plays a critical evolutionary role. In vision, motion processing is classically described using a motion energy model with spatiotemporally nonseparable filters suited for capturing the smooth continuous changes in spatial position over time afforded by moving objects. However, it is still not clear whether the filters underlying auditory motion discrimination are also continuous motion detectors or infer motion from comparing discrete sound locations over time (spatiotemporally separable). We used a psychophysical reverse correlation paradigm, where participants discriminated the direction of a motion signal in the presence of spatiotemporal noise, to determine whether the filters underlying auditory motion discrimination were spatiotemporally separable or nonseparable. We then examined whether these auditory motion filters were altered as a result of early blindness. We found that both sighted and early blind individuals have separable filters. However, early blind individuals show increased sensitivity to auditory motion, with reduced susceptibility to noise and filters that were more accurate in detecting motion onsets/offsets. Model simulations suggest that this reliance on separable filters is optimal given the limited spatial resolution of auditory input.

RESUMO

This paper presents interdisciplinary research exploring the development of inclusive multisensory science books, communicating immunology data for blind, low-vision and diverse-needs audiences. The research adopted an inductive theory-building approach, practice-based art methods and music and design methods, leveraging the lived experience of a legally blind artist. The research also involved designers and scientists in a cocreation process, producing books that incorporate tactile artworks, Braille-inspired protein models, image sonification and interaction. Two multisensory book titles, "The Heroes Within You: A Multisensory Exploration of Infection and Immunity" and "My Goodness: A Multisensory Exploration of Nutrition and Immunity", were developed for the Monash Sensory Science 2023 Exhibition Day. The books offer an innovative way to make science and art more accessible and engaging, addressing the limitations of traditional museum methods. Feedback from audiences has been positive, emphasizing the fascination, sensory engagement and ease of understanding. This paper highlights the potential for an interdisciplinary and inclusive approach to science and art, demonstrating the value of multisensory books as tools for science communication. The findings highlight the positive reception of this novel approach and suggest its potential for broader applications, promoting inclusivity and accessibility.

RESUMO

The May-June 2024 issue of Immunology & Cell Biology contains an Immunology Futures Special Feature on Disability Inclusion in Science. Diverse groups do better in science, yet individuals with disabilities face barriers to accessing education and opportunities within scientific disciplines. The Monash Sensory Science program, led by Professor Jamie Rossjohn and legally blind artist in residence Dr Erica Tandori, has transformed the accessibility for those with blindness, low vision and diverse needs (BLVDN) to experience biomedical data visualization through the form of multisensory scientific communication. The Monash Sensory Science Exhibition, first hosted in 2018 with the support of Monash University and the Australian Research Council, utilizes tactile multisensory and multimodal artworks, interactive displays and multisensory science books for BLVDN participants. In this Special Feature, scientists and researchers involved in the 2023 Autoimmunity Monash Sensory Science Exhibition discuss the novel models and displays designed to improve the scientific understanding of complex autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease, psoriasis and type 1 diabetes. This Special Feature aims to inform the inclusive teaching of immunology and raise discussions of how to improve access to all within our scientific institutions.

To educate members of the blind, low-vision and diverse needs communities on the pathogenesis of the chronic autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes, members of our team with research expertise in immune-mediated diseases, participated in the 2023 Monash Sensory Science (MSS) Exhibition. Using QR code linked audio commentary, participants were guided through tactile displays demonstrating normal insulin action in the regulation of blood glucose levels and its vital role in providing energy to tissues, followed by displays describing the various stages of the immune system's aberrant attack and the eventual complete destruction of the insulin producing beta-cells of the pancreatic islets in type 1 diabetes. These models conveyed to the participants the huge effect that this autoimmune-mediated disease has on the quality of life of affected individuals including the subsequent lifelong reliance on insulin injections to maintain glucose homeostasis. This MSS Exhibition provided a unique opportunity for our researchers to engage with under-represented members of the community and to raise awareness about such a debilitating and common autoimmune disease.

PURPOSE: The main objective of this study is to assess the test-retest and inter-administration mode reliability of the Impact of Vision Impairment profile (IVI), a common patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for people with chronic eye diseases. METHODS: The IVI was administered to adult patients with stable, chronic eye diseases two to four times per participant (average intervals between administrations 12 to 20 days; maximum two phone interviews, paper administration, electronic administration) by two trained interviewers. Rasch models were fit to the data. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs), mean differences and Cronbach's alpha between test-retest administrations (two phone interviews) and inter-mode comparisons were calculated. RESULTS: Two hundred-sixteen patients (mean age 67 ± 12 years, 40% male) were included in the study. The IVI met all psychometric requirements of the Rasch model, and the division into the domains of functional items (IVI_F) and emotional items (IVI_E) corresponded to the German validation study. ICCs (all for IVI_F and IVI_E, respectively) for the retest administrations were 0.938 and 0.912, and 0.853 and 0.893 for inter-mode comparisons phone/paper, 0.939 and 0.930 for phone/electronic, and 0.937 and 0.920 for paper/electronic (all p < 0.01). Mean differences (all for IVI_F and IVI_E, respectively) for the retest administrations were 2.8% and 0.7% and ranged from 2.0% to 6.2% and from 0.4 % to 4.9% between administration modes. Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.886 to 0.944 for retest and inter-mode comparisons. CONCLUSION: Due to the high test-retest reliability and the almost equally high comparability of different modes of administration of the IVI, the study endorses its use as a robust PROM to capture vision-related quality of life. Our results further support the use of the IVI as an endpoint in clinical trials and may simplify implementing it in both clinical trials or real-world evidence generation by offering multiple administration modes with high reliability.

BACKGROUND: Visually impaired and blind adolescents fare poorly in educational attainment compared to adolescents without vision impairment. Rehabilitation holds the potential to compensate for the hindrances that the impairment causes. Many rehabilitation initiatives exist. However, the efficacy of these initiatives remains uncertain. This systematic review assessed which rehabilitation initiatives improve participation in an educational setting for visually impaired and blind adolescents. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cinahl, and Cochrane library databases were searched. Only primary studies as randomized controlled trial (parallel group or crossover), cohort studies, case-control studies, qualitative studies, and case-studies were included. Data on the study characteristics, visual impairment, type of intervention, research question, main findings, and implications for practice were extracted from the papers. Critical appraisal was performed using the Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research and the Checklist for Quasi-Experimental Studies both from the Joanna Briggs Institute. The data extraction and the critical appraisal were performed independently by two reviewers. RESULTS: A total of 10 studies with visually impaired and blind adolescents were considered eligible, from an original search result of 3210 studies. In the thematic analysis we identified a heightened focus on different means for studying by making the curriculum content more accessible by applying different audio, tactile, or electronic devices (n = 8). A minor focus in the identified studies (n = 2) was placed on the impact of support from the environment on the development of literacy, for example the support from teachers or parents. Outcome parameters representing more diverse rehabilitation initiatives have not been adequately investigated in the literature. The scientific evidence that we identified was based on few publications with contradictory results and some studies were of questionable quality, limiting the applicability of their findings. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the review identified a gap in the evidence regarding rehabilitation initiatives for visually impaired and blind adolescents that enables participation in an educational setting. The overall quality assessment of the 10 studies identified several risks of bias, for which reason the current scientific evidence does not qualify as a basis for decision making, leaving the adolescents in a heightened risk to fall even further behind in the educational system. Further high quality randomized controlled trials are required to establish high-quality evidence.

BACKGROUND: Cambodia is a low-income country in South East Asia with a population of 15.5 million people of whom 4.9 million (38%) are under the age of 16. The causes of childhood blindness in Cambodia have not been investigated since the first survey of schools for the blind done in 2009 by our group. Given the large demographic and economic shifts in Cambodia since 2009 it is important to determine if these causes have changed in order to ensure intervention programmes are appropriately targeted. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the prevalence of causes of childhood blindness at schools for the blind in Cambodia. METHODS: Students between the ages of 5 and 16 years who were attending schools for the blind in Cambodia were examined by a consultant paediatric ophthalmologist and had clinical photographs taken. Distance visual acuity was measured using a logMAR tumbling E chart and the WHO definitions of blindness and severe visual impairment were used. The examining ophthalmologist recorded the anatomical site and aetiology of vision loss using the WHO Prevention of Blindness eye examination record for children. Collected data were compared to a previous survey from 2009. RESULTS: Data from 73 students were included for analysis. The most common anatomical location of abnormality causing vision loss was the cornea (n = 20, 33.9%) followed by the lens and retina (n = 11, 18.64% each). Hereditary factors (n = 29, 49.15%) and childhood diseases (n = 27, 45.76%) were the most common aetiological causes of childhood blindness. The majority (71.19%) of childhood blindness was avoidable. The present study did not demonstrate 0a significant difference in the causes of childhood blindness compared to 2009. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal pathologies continue to represent the most common cause of vision loss amongst the surveyed population and the majority of causes of childhood blindness continue to be avoidable. These findings will facilitate the development of evidence-based targeted interventional programmes in Cambodia.

SIGNIFICANCE: A majority of visually impaired older adults were able to learn to proficiently use visual-assistive iPhone applications (apps) following a median 1 hour and/or multiple training sessions, which should be considered when planning vision rehabilitation service delivery, including the option for remote telerehabilitation for those who prefer that modality. PURPOSE: Older adults with low vision are increasingly using technology to improve their visual functioning. We examined whether age-related comorbidities were potential barriers to success in learning to use visual-assistive apps on a smartphone. METHODS: A clinical trial assessed visual-assistive apps in 116 older adults aged 55+ years (mean [standard deviation], 72 [10] years). Subjects were randomized to use an app (SuperVision+, Seeing AI, or Aira) preloaded to a loaner iPhone and completed one-on-one training. App proficiency was measured by the participant's ability to use the iPhone/app without cueing at the end of training sessions. Training time was recorded for the initial session and totaled after subsequent sessions. Multiple regression models explored significant factors associated with training time and proficiency. RESULTS: Median initial and total training times were 45 and 60 minutes, respectively. Increased initial and total training times were both significantly related to increased age (p<0.001), legal blindness (p<0.007), Seeing AI versus SuperVision+ app (p<0.03), and participants from New England versus California (p<0.001). Most (71%) achieved proficiency after the initial training session; those odds were significantly greater among younger participants (p=0.04), those who opted for telerehabilitation (p=0.03), those who had higher cognitive scores (p=0.04), or those who were from New England (p=0.04). The majority (90%) was ultimately proficient with the app; those odds were significantly greater among participants who already had an optical magnifier (p=0.008), but were unrelated to other factors including study site. CONCLUSIONS: Following multiple, extensive training sessions, age, mild cognitive loss, or level of visual impairment did not preclude gaining proficiency with visual-assistive apps by visually impaired seniors, but those factors were associated with longer training times. Telerehabilitation can be a viable option to provide app training remotely for visually impaired seniors who choose that modality.

SIGNIFICANCE: Future work should develop and evaluate interventional strategies to help overcome visual and health-related barriers to travel in visually impaired seniors and mitigate adverse impacts of loneliness for those who do not leave town. PURPOSE: Life space refers to the area in which a person travels within a given time period. We explored whether demographics, vision, and/or health characteristics were related to restrictions in self-reported life space for visually impaired seniors. METHODS: Visually impaired (n = 114) clinical trial participants aged ≥55 years learned visual assistive iPhone apps and completed the following baseline questionnaires: Life Space, 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale, and New-General Self-efficacy Scale. Multiple logistic regressions evaluated associations between life space and patient factors after accounting for their distance to the next county or state. RESULTS: During 2021 to 2023, 17%, 43%, and 70% of participants had not left their town, county, or state, respectively, in the past 3 months, or planned to in the next 3 months. Those with reduced distance best-corrected visual acuity had greater odds of not leaving the county in these time frames (odds ratio [OR] = 3.5; p=0.04). Minority race was associated with greater odds of not leaving town or the county in the past 2 weeks or future 3 months (OR = 4.3 to 6.4; p=0.009 to 0.049). Increased self-efficacy was associated with reduced odds of not leaving the state in the past 3 months, next 3 months, or past and/or future 3 months (OR = 0.54 to 0.55; p=0.02 to 0.03). Better physical function was associated with reduced odds of not leaving the state in the past 2 weeks or 3 months (OR = 0.96 to 0.98; p=0.01 to 0.04). Increased loneliness was related to greater odds of not leaving town in the past and/or future 3 months (OR = 1.8 to 2.0; p=0.007 to 0.009). CONCLUSIONS: Minority race, reduced vision, self-efficacy, and physical health were related to life space restrictions in this cohort of visually impaired seniors, whereas loneliness was greater among those who were not leaving town.

SIGNIFICANCE: This study has shown a vibrotactile sensory substitution device (SSD) prototype, VibroSight, has the potential to improve functional outcomes (i.e., obstacle avoidance, face detection) for people with profound vision loss, even with brief familiarization (<20 minutes). PURPOSE: Mobility aids such as long canes are still the mainstay of support for most people with vision loss, but they do have limitations. Emerging technologies such as SSDs are gaining widespread interest in the low vision community. The aim of this project was to assess the efficacy of a prototype vibrotactile SSD for people with profound vision loss in the face detection and obstacle avoidance tasks. METHODS: The VibroSight device was tested in a movement laboratory setting. The first task involved obstacle avoidance, in which participants were asked to walk through an obstacle course. The second was a face detection task, in which participants were asked to step toward the first face they detected. Exit interviews were also conducted to gather user experience data. Both people with low vision (n = 7) and orientation and mobility instructors (n = 4) completed the tasks. RESULTS: In obstacle avoidance task, participants were able to use the device to detect (p<0.001) and avoid (p<0.001) the obstacles within a significantly larger range, but were slower (p<0.001), when compared with without the device. In face detection task, participants demonstrated a great level of accuracy, precision, and sensitivity when using the device. Interviews revealed a positive user experience, although participants identified that they would require a lighter and compact design for real-world use. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the results verified the functionality of vibrotactile SSD prototype. Further research is warranted to evaluate the user performance after an extended training program and to add new features, such as object recognition software algorithms, into the device.

SIGNIFICANCE: There is little literature linking mobility aids for people with sight loss to the functions, activities, and participation domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Future studies on this relationship should be funded and pursued to better understand ways to maximize the benefit of mobility aids. PURPOSE: The ICF domains of functions, activities, and participation are potentially health-supporting aspects of daily living that may be impeded for people with sight loss. Although mobility aids facilitate safely navigating obstacles to optimize independence, it is not clear if they have any effect on functions, activities, or participation. This review explores the current literature to establish the associations between mobility aids and ICF domains. METHODS: An established scoping review methodological framework was used to systematically search, select, and synthesize the existing literature. RESULTS: Of 116 unique retrieved articles, three observational studies were eligible for inclusion with a total of 124 participants. A small experimental study found that blind adults had slower Timed Up and Go times than sighted and better performance with a long cane than without. One observational study found that physical activity was strongly related to level of visual acuity but with no independent impact of mobility aids. A single mixed-methods study explored travel frequency for blind people with assistance dogs and considered constraints to participation. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the included studies involving some aspect of mobility aid use by people with sight loss, to date, no study has focused exclusively on mobility aid intervention for people with sight loss within the physical function, physical activity, and participation domains of the ICF. There is no reliable evidence on the associations between mobility aids and physical function, physical activity, and participation. This is an important knowledge gap for determining the most suitable aids, as well as their use, to best facilitate health-supporting activities.

SIGNIFICANCE: The number of patients with mild to moderate visual impairments (MVIs) is increasing as the average age of the population increases. Thus, it is important to understand the training and resources available for rehabilitation practitioners to provide adequate care to these patients within their scope of practice. PURPOSE: This study explores rehabilitation professionals' perceptions of their competence in screening and treating patients with MVI, and identifying the tools and resources needed to increase these professionals' comfort level in managing these patients. METHODS: Data collection was carried via an online questionnaire to Quebec rehabilitation professionals and student-trainees who are members of their respective professional orders. The questionnaire consisted of 29 to 30 questions (open- and close-ended) related to demographics, service provision to MVI patients, education in MVI and future training, and future service delivery to MVI patients. RESULTS: Data were collected from 96 professionals, with 52 fully completing the questionnaire, with all the responses included in the analysis. Most respondents had little or no confidence in adequately screening or treating patients with MVI and mentioned that they knew little or nothing about the range of services offered by vision rehabilitation centers in Quebec (81%), whereas 55% at least occasionally offer services to these patients. The majority felt that their profession would benefit from continuing education on MVI (73%), with a marked interest in online training. CONCLUSIONS: Rehabilitation professionals in Quebec are not confident in identifying or treating patients presenting MVI but express an interest in attending continuing education courses given by optometrists, low vision professionals, or a member of their own profession. Numerous barriers account for this problem, including a lack of experience and competence in the assessment and treatment options for MVI, as well as a lack of informational and human resources available in their workplaces.

SIGNIFICANCE: Social media is used by >4.48 billion people worldwide. Despite its popularity, vision-impaired individuals struggle to use social media given visual inaccessibility of content and lack of access to Internet/Wireless-Fidelity-enabled devices. Our study explores visually impaired adult's use of social media in comparison to a control group. PURPOSE: This study aimed to report the demographic profile and patterns of social media use among adults with vision impairment (VI) aged 18 to 35 years and compare it with an age-matched normally sighted group in India. In addition, we explored barriers to use of social media among adults with VI. METHODS: Vision-impaired and normally sighted adults (controls) aged 18 to 35 years at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India, answered a questionnaire about social media use (e.g., platform used). RESULTS: Four hundred twenty-two individuals (201 VI, 221 controls) participated. Normally sighted adults (98%) used social media more than the VI group (81%; p<0.001). Vision-impaired users were predominantly male (85%) and unemployed (57%; p<0.00001 for both). There was no significant difference in educational level between groups (p=0.17). Smartphones were the most popular device used (VI, 161 [99%]; control, 206 [95%]), with tablet PC/iPad being the least popular (VI, 5 [3%]; control, 12 [6%]). Adults with VI and controls commonly used WhatsApp as communication platforms, and Facebook and Twitter as networking platforms. Approximately one-third of individuals across both social media user groups reported barriers to use (VI, 48 [30%]; control, 74 [34%]; p<0.001). Vision-impaired individuals cited accessibility issues of having to rely on audio over vision to navigate social media, whereas controls reported having to share a phone. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of social media usage among VI adults is high (81%) and is substantially higher than the 33% reported in the general Indian population. Vision-impaired adults who used social media were male with moderate VI and were less likely to be employed compared with controls.

SIGNIFICANCE: Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the promise to be an alternative transportation solution for those with vision loss. However, the impact of vision loss on the perceptions and concerns of AVs is unknown. This study therefore examined whether AVs are perceived differently by blind, visually impaired (VI), and normally sighted people. PURPOSE: This study compared the perceptions of AVs among the blind, VI, and normally sighted. METHODS: Participants' opinions on four perception measures (general opinion, trust, impact on quality of life, and intention to use AVs) and nine concerns regarding AVs were measured. The survey was administered to 51 normally sighted, 68 VI, and 65 blind participants. Analyses of covariance assessed whether the four perception measures and nine concerns varied by vision status (normal vision, VI, blind) and driving status (driver, nondriver). Univariate correlations and multiple regression analyses identified associations and predictors of AV perceptions and concerns from demographic, mood, cognition, travel behavior, and vision measures, which included visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and visual field. RESULTS: The blind (p<0.001), VI (p<0.001), and nondrivers (p<0.001) showed a greater intention to use AVs compared with those with normal vision and drivers. Similar findings were found for the other perception measures. As visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and visual field extent declined, positivity toward AVs increased (p<0.001). Visual field extent best predicted general opinion and trust in AVs, whereas driving measures were the best predictors of impact on quality of life and intention to use AVs. Concerns about AVs showed no differences based on vision (p=0.94) or driving (p=0.63) status. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with vision loss expressed more acceptance of AVs despite their concerns. How positive someone is toward AVs appears to be dependent on their visual field extent and driving status.

PURPOSE: To compare the objective performance, acceptance and usability of head-mounted displays (HMDs) to provide evidence-based data that could be used to increase the efficiency of device referrals based upon a person's vision loss and functional needs. METHODS: A cross-sectional, counterbalanced, individually controlled crossover study was performed on 15 adults with various eye conditions. Performance was measured when using four HMDs: eSight4, Eyedaptic EYE3, Eyedaptic EYE4 and IrisVision Inspire. Performance on clinical visual acuity tests and contrast were assessed, as well as vision-related activities of daily living (ADL) which were divided into three categories: Reading, Searching & Identifying and Eye-hand Coordination. User-experience was also assessed. Logistic regression analyses, Friedman one-way repeated measure analyses of variance by ranks and multivariate permutation testing were used for analysis. RESULTS: There was a significant improvement in visual acuity when using all devices. For contrast tasks, only the eSight4 and Eyedaptic EYE3 improved performance relative to baseline. For most Reading and Searching & Identifying tasks, the odds of being able to perform the tasks were significantly higher while using the devices. However, the actual performance with most devices (e.g., number of words read or reading speed) did not improve significantly over baseline for most tasks. For the Eye-hand Coordination tasks, participants performed equivalent to or significantly poorer than baseline when using the devices. No demographic or clinical predictors of outcomes were identified. Participants expressed dissatisfaction with the devices' effectiveness, acceptability and usability. CONCLUSIONS: While performance on clinical tests was better when using the devices, performance on most real-world ADLs was equal to or worse than baseline. No single device improved performance on all tasks, and performance on any one task was not improved with all the devices. The overall dissatisfaction with the devices paralleled the lack of objective improvement in the performance of real-world tasks.

Few studies have focused on people with hearing loss and intellectual disabilities engaging in gambling activities. However, people with visual impairments' energetic participation in sports betting activities is unexplored. This article highlights sports betting strategies of visually impaired students to understand how their motives affect their gambling behaviours as an alternative to their survival. Six male adults aged between 27 and 40 years participated using semi-structured interviews, which were conducted face-to-face, recorded, transcribed, and thematically analysed with the Braun and Clarke model. Findings show that sports betting prevails in communities fostering peer persuasion including family relations serving as an inducer for visually impaired students. Their strategies are varied including the fewer the better concept based on teams' selection dynamics. While they are inspired by potential economic gains, some recognise it as acquiring entrepreneurial skills because of risk-taking, thus asymmetry and disconnected. The article recommends stakeholders' education to provide better policies that can remind them to bet for leisure or desist from gambling.

Autonomous outdoor moving objects like cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians present different risks to the safety of Visually Impaired People (VIPs). Consequently, many camera-based VIP mobility assistive solutions have resulted. However, they fail to guarantee VIP safety in practice, i.e., they cannot effectively prevent collisions with more dangerous threats moving at higher speeds, namely, Critical Moving Objects (CMOs). This paper presents the first practical camera-based VIP mobility assistant scheme, ARAware, that effectively identifies CMOs in real-time to give the VIP more time to avoid danger through simultaneously addressing CMO identification, CMO risk level evaluation and classification, and prioritised CMO warning notification. Experimental results based on our real-world prototype demonstrate that ARAware accurately identifies CMOs (with 97.26% mAR and 88.20% mAP) in real-time (with a 32 fps processing speed for 30 fps incoming video). It precisely classifies CMOs according to their risk levels (with 100% mAR and 91.69% mAP), and warns in a timely manner about high-risk CMOs while effectively reducing false alarms by postponing the warning of low-risk CMOs. Compared to the closest state-of-the-art approach, DEEP-SEE, ARAware achieves significantly higher CMO identification accuracy (by 42.62% in mAR and 10.88% in mAP), with a 93% faster end-to-end processing speed.

RESUMO

The inability to see makes moving around very difficult for visually impaired persons. Due to their limited movement, they also struggle to protect themselves against moving and non-moving objects. Given the substantial rise in the population of those with vision impairments in recent years, there has been an increasing amount of research devoted to the development of assistive technologies. This review paper highlights the state-of-the-art assistive technology, tools, and systems for improving the daily lives of visually impaired people. Multi-modal mobility assistance solutions are also evaluated for both indoor and outdoor environments. Lastly, an analysis of several approaches is also provided, along with recommendations for the future.

Because of the absence of visual perception, visually impaired individuals encounter various difficulties in their daily lives. This paper proposes a visual aid system designed specifically for visually impaired individuals, aiming to assist and guide them in grasping target objects within a tabletop environment. The system employs a visual perception module that incorporates a semantic visual SLAM algorithm, achieved through the fusion of ORB-SLAM2 and YOLO V5s, enabling the construction of a semantic map of the environment. In the human-machine cooperation module, a depth camera is integrated into a wearable device worn on the hand, while a vibration array feedback device conveys directional information of the target to visually impaired individuals for tactile interaction. To enhance the system's versatility, a Dobot Magician manipulator is also employed to aid visually impaired individuals in grasping tasks. The performance of the semantic visual SLAM algorithm in terms of localization and semantic mapping was thoroughly tested. Additionally, several experiments were conducted to simulate visually impaired individuals' interactions in grasping target objects, effectively verifying the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system. Overall, this system demonstrates its capability to assist and guide visually impaired individuals in perceiving and acquiring target objects.
