RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to compare the graft resorption characteristics of autogenous cartilage from the septum, auricle, and costal in the superficial muscular aponeurotic system of the nasal dorsum of the rabbit model. METHODS: Equal-sized perichondrium-free septal, auricular, and costal cartilage grafts were collected from fifteen New Zealand white rabbits. Cartilage grafts were taken at the scale of two grafts from each animal's ear, two from its costal part, and one from its septum. Costal cartilage grafts that were shaped with a micro-motor device and monopolar electrocautery, elastic cartilage grafts that were shaped with a micro-motor device and monopolar electrocautery, and septal cartilage grafts that were shaped with a scalpel were all implanted into the dorsum of rabbit's noses to create five groups. All autogenous cartilage tissues were removed 3 months later. Cartilages were evaluated for histological features, graft mass, and chondrocyte density resorption. RESULTS: The elastic cartilage group, where electrocautery was used to shape the cartilage, had a higher resorption score than the other groups. The costal cartilage graft shaped with a micro-motor was also observed to have the best cartilage regeneration score. CONCLUSION: We observed that the resorption of costal cartilage was lower than that of ear and septum cartilage. It was determined that micro-motor application for the shaping process caused less resorption and stimulated more regeneration than cautery application. RESUMO

Though the lymphangioma is a benign neoplasm, it may make an invasion to vital structures by progressively growing. For lymphangioma, which progressed in such a way, surgical treatment has high morbidity and recurrence risk. On these cases, OK-432 is a frequently used sclerotherapy agent. The authors report the result they obtained by the use of single-dose OK-432 on an inoperable pediatric cervical macrocystic lymphangioma case and also their experiences.

RESUMO

Sialolipoma is a newly recognized tumor of the major and minor salivary glands and represents only 0.3% of all salivary gland tumors. Only 3 cases of congenital sialolipoma are available in the literature. In the current case, we performed a total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation on a 12-week-old infant exhibiting huge mass in the parotid region. Histopathology results showed sialolipoma. There was no recurrence at the 18-month follow-up. Although it is a very rare disease in infants, congenital sialolipoma should be kept in mind in patients with parotid mass. The primary treatment is parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral vestibular condition characterized by short-term vertigo attacks that significantly affect quality of life. OBJECTIVES: Examine how well a single Epley maneuver worked in an outpatient setting for people with posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (PC-BPPV) and whether they needed a second Dix-Hallpike maneuver. DESIGN: Prospective. SETTINGS: Otorhinolaryngology department of a tertiary care center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sociodemographic data, body mass index (BMI), and systemic disease history of 75 patients diagnosed with PC-BPPV were recorded, and their relationship with success rates after the modified Epley maneuver was analyzed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Detect cases that could not be repositioned with the diagnostic control Dix-Hallpike test performed 20 minutes after the modified Epley reposition maneuver in the same session in PC-BPPV patients. SAMPLE SIZE: 75. RESULTS: Of the 75 patients, 31 were male (41.3%), 44 female (58.6%) with a mean (standard deviation) age of 58.6 (15.9) years age, 54.6% had one or more chronic diseases. BMI was 30 mg/kg2 and above in 31 patients (41.3%). The modified Epley maneuver was successful in 77.3%. No significant relationship was found between additional diseases or BMI in the patient group in whom the maneuver was unsuccessful. CONCLUSION: The success rates of repositioning maneuvers in treating patients diagnosed with PC-BPPV are high. However, more than a single maneuver is required in some resistant patients. Second diagnostic and repositioning maneuvers performed in the same session will reduce multiple hospital admissions. While it is helpful to repeat the maneuver in the patient group where it was unsuccessful, other factors causing the failure should be investigated. LIMITATIONS: Lack of follow-up results of patients after 7-10 days.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Cigarette smoke is known to contain toxic heavy metals. In this study, heavy metal levels in the nasal turbinate tissues of smokers and nonsmokers were measured and compared with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). METHODS: Forty patients who come to the Otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic due to nasal obstruction and are given an appointment for partial turbinate reduction operation due to inferior turbinate hypertrophy, according to their smoking status, were divided into two groups: those who had smoked one pack/day for at least 10 years and those who had never smoked. The levels of heavy metals (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Hg, Ni, Se, and Ag) were compared by ICP-MS in nasal turbinate tissues. RESULTS: Al (p = 0.002), Cr (p < 0.001), Co (p < 0.001), Ni (p = 0.001), Cu (p < 0.001), As (p < 0.001), Se (p < 0.001), Ag (p < 0.001), Cd (p = 0.001), Ba (p = 0.008), Hg (p < 0.001), and Pb (p < 0.001) values in the smoker group were found to be significantly higher than the values of nonsmokers. Although the Mn level was high in smokers, no significant difference was observed (p = 0.299). CONCLUSIONS: Smoking can cause nasal and sinus problems. In this study, we observed that the smoking group had significantly higher levels of almost all the heavy metals investigated in the nasal turbinate tissues. As smoking damages, the mucociliary system and the mucosa, heavy metals from cigarettes may accumulate further and cause harm to the nasal tissues. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3 Laryngoscope, 2024.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate whether the middle ear resonance frequency (RF) is affected in acromegaly, which causes growth in the skull bone. METHODS: Thirty acromegaly patients and 38 volunteers were included in the study. Pure tone average scores and middle ear RF values of the groups that underwent pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, and multifrequency tympanometry tests were compared. RESULTS: The pure tone mean was 14.95 ± 12.13 in acromegaly patients and 5.70 ± 8.52 in the control group (p:0.18). Sensorineural hearing loss(SNHL) was observed in 16.6% of the patients. The average middle ear RF was calculated as 815 ± 179.05 Hz in patients with acromegaly and 773 ± 127.15 in the control group. (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: This study is the first to evaluate middle-ear RF in acromegaly patients. Acromegaly-induced changes in soft tissues and bone structures impact middle ear functions. In this patient group, we found an increase in middle ear RF without conductive-type hearing loss and a 16.6% rate of SNHL.

RESUMO

The surgical procedure of lipomas is performed under local, regional, or general anaesthesia depending on the location, number, and size of the lipoma. Anaesthesia can be achieved with a superficial cervical plexus block in the short-term surgery of soft tissue lesions in the dermatome areas of the lesser occipital nerve and great auricular nerve. In this article, we presented a high-risk patient with comorbid diseases and difficult airway who underwent superficial cervical plexus block for retro-auricular lipoma excision.

RESUMO

We report the case of a 54-year-old woman who presented to the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) outpatient clinic with hearing loss, tinnitus, and fullness in her right ear. In the first clinical examination, a pouch hanging in the anterior upper quadrant was detected in the tympanic membrane of the right ear. A tick larva was found in the cyctic lesion located on the tympanic membrane. Our case was unique due to this unexpected diagnosis.

RESUMO

Elevated levels of heavy metals like cadmium (Cd) and manganese (Mn) are known to lead to oxidative damage-related oto-toxicity and decreased levels of chromium (Cr) and selenium (Se) are known to lead to oto-toxicity due to reduced anti-oxidant activity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum levels of Cd, Mn, Cr, and Se and their relationship with tinnitus. A total of 48 patients with tinnitus (Group 1) and 40 healthy controls (Group 2) were included in the study. All participants were applied audiology tests. Severity of tinnitus was measured with Tinnitus Severity Index Questionnaire (TSIQ) in group 1. Serum Mn, Cd, Cr, and Se measurements were done by using The Agilent ICP-MS system consisted of a 7700 coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Serum Cd, Mn, and Cr levels were higher in group 1 and Se level was lower in group 1 than that of group 2. We may conclude that Cd, Mn, Cr, and Se levels could play an important role in etio-pathogenesis of tinnitus, and thereby supplementation or reduction of these elements could be considered as novel therapeutic goals.

RESUMO

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common diseases of oral mucosa characterized by recurrent painful ulcers. Although many factors have been implicated in its etiology, they are not fully identified. To investigate the involvement of heavy metals accumulated in saliva in the etiopathogenesis of RAS. This is a prospective, comparative, and controlled clinical study investigating the relationship between heavy metal exposure and RAS. The study consisted of 75 patients with idiopathic RAS who presented to our clinic with recurrent oral wound complaints and 74 healthy volunteers. All subjects were interviewed regarding age, acute or chronic diseases, dietary habits, and possible chemical exposure. Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) was measured in saliva by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Significance was considered at p < 0.05. Salivary levels of Pb (15.2 ± 1.1 vs. 7.6 ± 9.9 µg/l; p < 0.003), Hg (0.50 ± 0.60 vs. 0.13 ± 0.30 µg/l; p < 0.001; p < 0.001), Cd (0.11 ± 0.14 vs. 0.06 ± 0.13 µg/l; p < 0.021), and Cu (34.9 ± 22.5 vs. 21.6 ± 21.9 µg/l; p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the patient group than that in the control group. There was no significant difference between Mn levels (57.9 ± 41.6 µg/l). Higher heavy metal content of saliva in the patients with RAS may induce apoptosis and ulcer in oral mucosa cells through triggering release of reactive oxygen species resulting from oxidative stress resulting DNA damage.

RESUMO

In this research, leaf area prediction model was developed for some leaf-used maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars namely Coluna, Luce, Maveric, Ranchero, TTM-813, Zamora and RX-788 grown in Black Sea region of Turkey. Lamina width, length and leaf area were measured without destroying the leaf to develop the models. The actual leaf areas of the plants were measured by PLACOM Digital Planimeter and multiple regression analysis with Excel 2003 computer package program was performed for the plants separately. The produced leaf area prediction models in the present study were formulized as LA = a - (b x W2) + [c x (W x L)] where LA is leaf area, W is leaf width, L is leaf length and a, b, c are coefficiencies. R2 values for maize cultivars tested varied with species from 0.95 in Luce to 0.98 in Maveric. All R2 values and standard errors were found to be significant at the p < 0.001 level.

RESUMO

CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that clarithromycin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and, when it is combined with prednisolone, those effects gain strength. OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to investigate the effects that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of clarithromycin and/or prednisolone have on experimental otitis media in effusion-induced guinea-pigs. METHOD AND RESULTS: In this study, 35-male guinea pigs were randomly divided into five-groups. For the experimental otitis media, intra-tympanic histamine (0.1 ml) was injected into the guinea pigs in all of the groups except the control group. Then, 24-h after the intra-tympanic injections, clarithromycin (15 mg/kg/day) and/or prednisolone (1 mg/kg/day) were applied intraperitoneally to the guinea-pigs for 7-days. The biochemical analysis showed an increase in antioxidant capacity and a decrease in oxidant status and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the clarithromycin group and the prednisolone group and especially in the clarithromycin+prednisolone group, as compared to the experimental group (p < 0.05). In the cytokine analysis, lower levels of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-17A and higher IL-10 were found in the clarithromycin, prednisolone, and clarithromycin+prednisolone groups than in the experimental group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the histologic analyses showed histopathologic changes in the middle ear mucosa of the experimental group, but comparatively fewer-histopathologic changes were observed in the clarithromycin, prednisolone, and clarithromycin+prednisolone groups.
