INTRODUCTION: Radiology equipment requires routine maintenance to prevent equipment breakdown. Equipment breakdown can lead to adverse patient outcomes and lost revenue to hospitals. In Ghana, there is a mismatch between the available radiology equipment and requests which may result in frequent breakdown. Several studies have been conducted to investigate equipment downtime across radiology departments. However, there is none for Ghana. This study therefore investigated the downtimes of radiology equipment across three hospitals in Ghana. METHOD: The study covered the period January-December 2020. An inventory sheet was used to collect data on equipment specifications, frequency of breakdown, downtimes, average daily patient throughput, the average cost of common examinations, the availability of post-installation training and maintenance contracts/agreements. RESULTS: The study reviewed 32 items of radiology equipment. Radiology equipment across the hospitals broke down frequently and downtimes were very high. Radiographers/radiologists across the hospitals were provided with poor/inadequate post-installation training, and maintenance contracts/agreements were unavailable. The radiology equipment downtimes resulted in significant lost revenue of GH₵ 16,279,803 (US$ 1,968,537). CONCLUSION: Radiology equipment across the hospitals broke down frequently and downtimes were lengthy leading to significant lost revenue for the hospitals. Post-installation trainings were poor/inadequate, spanning a few hours. Also, maintenance contracts/agreements were non-existent across the three hospitals. A nationwide study is needed to determine equipment downtimes and lost revenue across all radiology departments in Ghanaian hospitals, to better inform policy-making. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study may help hospital managers and other stakeholders involved in policy formulation and strategic planning, put measures in place to minimise radiology equipment breakdown in Ghana. The study may also help optimise radiology services and enable radiology departments to render uninterrupted clinical services to patients in Ghana.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials can have a strong benefit to harvest thermal energy if they can be applied to large areas without losing their performance over time. One way of achieving large-area films is through hybrid materials, where a blend of TE materials with polymers can be applied as coating. Here, we present the development of all solution-processed TE ink and hybrid films with varying contents of TE Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3 nanomaterials, along with their characterization. Using (1-methoxy-2-propyl) acetate (MPA) as the solvent and poly (methyl methacrylate) as the durable polymer, large-area homogeneous hybrid TE films have been fabricated. The conductivity and TE power factor improve with nanoparticle volume fraction, peaking around 60-70% solid material fill factor. For larger fill factors, the conductivity drops, possibly because of an increase in the interface resistance through interface defects and reduced connectivity between the platelets in the medium. The use of dodecanethiol (DDT) as an additive in the ink formulation enabled an improvement in the electrical conductivity through modification of interfaces and the compactness of the resultant films, leading to a 4-5 times increase in the power factor for both p- and n-type hybrid TE films, respectively. The observed trends were captured by combining percolation theory with analytical resistive theory, with the above assumption of increasing interface resistance and connectivity with polymer volume reduction. The results obtained on these hybrid films open a new low-cost route to produce and implement TE coatings on a large scale, which can be ideal for driving flexible, large-area energy scavenging technologies such as personal medical devices and the IoT.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) diagnosis can be difficult in a chronic pancreatitis (CP) background, especially in its mass forming presentation. We aimed to assess the accuracy of glypican-1-positive circulating exosomes (GPC1+crExos) to distinguish PDAC from CP versus the state-of-the-art CA 19-9 biomarker. METHODS: This was a unicentric prospective cohort. Endoscopic ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration or biopsy and blood tests (GPC1+crExos and serum CA 19-9) were performed. RESULTS: The cohort comprised 60 PDAC and 29 CP (7 of which mass forming - MF) patients. Median levels of GPC1+crExos were significantly higher in PDAC (99.7%) versus CP (28.4%; p<0.0001) with an AUROC of 0.96 with 98.3% sensitivity and 86.2% specificity for a cut-off of 45.0% (p<0.0001); this outperforms CA 19-9 AUROC of 0.82 with 78.3% sensitivity and 65.5% specificity at a cut-off of 37 U/mL (p<0.0001). The superiority of% GPC1+crExos over CA 19-99 in differentiating PDAC from CP was observed in both early (stage I) and advanced tumors (stages II-IV). CONCLUSION: Levels of GPC1+crExos coupled to beads enable differential diagnosis between PDAC and CP including its mass-forming presentation.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of syringaldehyde (SA) on the antioxidant and oxidant system in spinal cord ischemia (SCI). METHODS: These study and experiments were conducted at Medical Research Center, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Çanakkale, Turkey, between 2014-2018. Eighteen New Zealand White adult male rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups (n=6). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured in the spinal cord tissues. Degenerated neurons, hemorrhage and in ammatory cell migration in the spinal cord were investigated histopathologically. Expressions of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), caspase-3, and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) were evaluated immunohistochemically. Clinically, it was evaluated with modified Tarlov score. RESULTS: Biochemically, there was an expected decrease in SOD, CAT, and GPx enzyme activities in ischemia groups, there was also an increase in MPO activity at the same time. When the enzyme activities spinal cord ischemia/ reperfusion (SCI/R)+SA, control and SCI/R groups were compared, the difference was found to be statistically significant (p less than 0.05). Glutathione peroxidase enzyme activity levels were very low in ischemia group compared to the significant increase in the SA group (p less than 0.05). Histopathologically, when SCI/R and SCI/R+SA groups were compared, there were statistically significant differences in the number of degenerative neurons and amount of hemorrhage; this comparison shows the significance of treatment in terms of inflammatory cell migration (p less than 0.05). The expressions of nNOS, caspase-3, and NF-κB were found significantly increased in SCI/R group compared to the control group (p less than 0.05). Syringaldehyde treatment decreased nNOS, caspase-3, and NF-κB expressions immunohistochemically. Clinical evaluation showed improvement in the SA-treated group.
