RESUMO

Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is caused by Neisseria meningitidis, with the main serogroups responsible for the disease being A, B, C, W, X, and Y. To date, several vaccines targeting N. meningitidis have been developed albeit with a short-lived protection. Given that MenW and MenB are the most common causes of IMD in Europe, Turkey, and the Middle East, we aimed to develop an outer membrane vesicle (OMV) based bivalent vaccine as the heterologous antigen source. Herein, we compared the immunogenicity, and breadth of serum bactericidal activity (SBA) assay-based protective coverage of OMV vaccine to the X serotype with existing commercial meningococcal conjugate and polysaccharide (PS) vaccines in a murine model. BALB/c mice were immunized with preclinical batches of the W + B OMV vaccine, either adjuvanted with Alum, CpG ODN, or their combinations, and compared with a MenACYW conjugate vaccine (NimenrixTM, Pfizer), and a MenB OMV-based vaccine (Bexsero®, GSK), The immune responses were assessed through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and SBA assay. Antibody responses and SBA titers were significantly higher in the W + B OMV vaccine when adjuvanted with Alum or CpG ODN, as compared to the control groups. Moreover, the SBA titers were not only significantly higher than those achieved with available conjugated ACYW vaccines but also on par with the 4CMenB vaccines. In conclusion, the W + B OMV vaccine demonstrated the capacity to elicit robust antibody responses, surpassing or matching the levels induced by licensed meningococcal vaccines. Consequently, the W + B OMV vaccine could potentially serve as a viable alternative or supplement to existing meningococcal vaccines.

RESUMO

Chronic bone loss is an under-recognized complication of malaria, the underlying mechanism of which remains incompletely understood. We have previously shown that persistent accumulation of Plasmodium products in the bone marrow leads to chronic inflammation in osteoblast (OB) and osteoclast (OC) precursors causing bone loss through MyD88, an adaptor molecule for diverse inflammatory signals. However, the specific contribution of MyD88 signaling in OB or OC precursors in malaria-induced bone loss remains elusive. To assess the direct cell-intrinsic role of MyD88 signaling in adult bone metabolism under physiological and infection conditions, we used the Lox-Cre system to specifically deplete MyD88 in the OB or OC lineages. Mice lacking MyD88 primarily in the maturing OBs showed a comparable decrease in trabecular bone density by microcomputed tomography to that of controls after Plasmodium yoelii non-lethal infection. In contrast, mice lacking MyD88 in OC precursors showed significantly less trabecular bone loss than controls, suggesting that malaria-mediated inflammatory mediators are primarily controlled by MyD88 in the OC lineage. Surprisingly, however, depletion of MyD88 in OB, but not in OC, precursors resulted in reduced bone mass with decreased bone formation rates in the trabecular areas of femurs under physiological conditions. Notably, insulin-like growth factor-1, a key molecule for OB differentiation, was significantly lower locally and systemically when MyD88 was depleted in OBs. Thus, our data demonstrate an indispensable intrinsic role for MyD88 signaling in OB differentiation and bone formation, while MyD88 signaling in OC lineages plays a partial role in controlling malaria-induced inflammatory mediators and following bone pathology. These findings may lead to the identification of novel targets for specific intervention of bone pathologies, particularly in malaria-endemic regions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea is one of the most frequent side effects of antimicrobial therapy. We assessed the epidemiological data of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in pediatric patients in our region. METHODS: The prospective multi-center study included pediatric patients who were initiated an oral antibiotic course in outpatient clinics and followed in a well-established surveillance system. This follow-up system constituded inclusion of patient by the primary physician, supply of family follow-up charts to the family, passing the demographics and clinical information of patient to the Primary Investigator Centre, and a close telephone follow-up of patients for a period of eight weeks by the Primary Investigator Centre. RESULTS: A result of 758 cases were recruited in the analysis which had a frequency of 10.4% antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Among the cases treated with amoxicillin-clavulanate 10.4%, and cephalosporins 14.4% presented with antibiotic-associated diarrhea. In the analysis of antibiotic-associated diarrhea occurrence according to different geographical regions of Turkey, antibiotic-associated diarrhea episodes differed significantly (p = 0.014), particularly higher in The Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia. Though most commonly encountered with cephalosporin use, antibiotic-associated diarrhea is not a frequent side effect. CONCLUSION: This study on pediatric antibiotic-associated diarrhea displayed epidemiological data and the differences geographically in our region.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and optimal use of corticosteroids in children with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia, for which effective treatment is still lacking with respect to this population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study and included patients (aged < 18 years) with severe COVID-19 pneumonia and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who received standard doses (2-4 mg/kg/day) and high doses (>250 mg/day) of methylprednisolone (MPZ). We adjusted for patients on steroid treatments with a propensity score and compared the side effects of different MPZ doses and patient survival. RESULTS: Fifty-nine patients were included: 61% were male, the median age was 8, interquartile range (IQR) 2-15) years. The overall survival was 84.4% in patients treated with standard-dose MPZ (n = 45, 76.3%) and 92.2% in patients treated with high-dose MPZ (n = 14, 23.7%; p = 0.67). The demographic, clinical, and laboratory data did not differ significantly after propensity score matching, apart from bradycardia, which was a prominent feature of the high-dose group. The clinical and radiological response rates on day 7 were higher and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) was lower in the high-dose group. CONCLUSION: The patients with high-dose MPZ had better clinical and radiological responses than those with standard-dose MPZ, although the mortality rate did not differ between standard and high-dose regimens of MPZ.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Influenza in children has been well described, whereas there has been a paucity of pediatric data regarding COVID-19. It is crucial for clinicians to differentiate cases of COVID-19 from cases of influenza because of the upcoming influenza season in the new pandemic era. METHODS: This retrospective study included pediatric patients who were diagnosed with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 between March and September 2020, or seasonal influenza between October 2019 and March 2020. RESULTS: A total of 315 children were included in this study; 151 were diagnosed with influenza and 164 had confirmed COVID-19. The median age of patients with COVID-19 was 10 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 3-15 years), whereas the median age of patients with influenza was 4 years (IQR: 1-6 years) (p = 0.001). In the COVID-19 group, 6.3% of patients had underlying diseases, the most frequent being neurological conditions (3%). In the influenza group, 20.9% of patients had an underlying disease, the most frequent being asthma (14.5%). Fever (odds ratio [OR]: 20.476; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.438-171.995; p = 0.005), dyspnea/tachypnea (OR 13.950; 95% CI: 2.607-74.634; p = 0.002), and increased C-reactive protein (CRP) (OR: 7.650; 95% CI: 2.094-27.955; p = 0.002) were main predictors of influenza diagnosis in comparison to COVID-19. Lymphopenia was detected in 43.2% of patients with influenza and 19.9% of patients with COVID-19 (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The accurate differentiation between "influenza or COVID-19" seems possible by evaluating a combination of factors including cough, fever, vomiting, leucopenia, lymphopenia, pneumonia, in pediatric patients with high CRP as well as age.

RESUMO

Severity of disease caused by influenza virus and the influencing factors that may be different. Moreover, the disease course actually may not be determined specifically in children because of lower seroprotection rates of children. Herein, the results clinic and outcome data of children with influenza from Turkey were reported. We present here the results from 2013 to 2017. Nasopharyngeal swab samples of the children with influenza were investigated via multiplex polymerase chain reaction. A total of 348 children were diagnosed with influenza; 143 (41.1%) were influenza A, 85 (24.4%) were influenza B, and 120 (34.5%) were mixt infection with other respiratory viruses. Fifty-four percent of children admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) were under 2 years of age (p = .001). Having an underlying disease was detected as the main predictor for both hospitalization and ICU stay according to multiple logistic regression analysis (odds ratio [OR], 11.784: 95% confidence interval [CI], 5.212-26.643; p = .001 and OR, 4.972: 95% CI, 2.331-10.605; p = .001, respectively). Neurological symptoms most frequently seen in cases who died (44.4%; p = .02). Lymphopenia was relatively higher (55.6%) and thrombocytopenia was most frequently seen in cases who died (77.8%) with a significant ratio (p = .001). Underlying diseases was found a risk factor for influenza being hospitalized and being admitted to ICU. Children under 2 years of age and with underlying diseases should be vaccinated particularly in countries where the influenza vaccination is still not routinely implemented in the immunization schedule. Highlights Underlying diseases is a risk factor for influenza to be hospitalized and admitted to ICU. Influenza vaccination is of great importance to prevent life-threatening complications of influenza, particularly in children require ICU admission. The possibility to reduce the outpatient visit number by vaccination has a great impact on disease burden in addition to the underestimated crucial social benefits, as well.

RESUMO

The disease course of children with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) seems milder as compared with adults, however, actual reason of the pathogenesis still remains unclear. There is a growing interest on possible relationship between pathogenicity or disease severity and biomarkers including cytokines or chemokines. We wondered whether these biomarkers could be used for the prediction of the prognosis of COVID-19 and improving our understanding on the variations between pediatric and adult cases with COVID-19. The acute phase serum levels of 25 cytokines and chemokines in the serum samples from 60 COVID-19 pediatric (n = 30) and adult cases (n = 30) including 20 severe or critically ill, 25 moderate and 15 mild patients and 30 healthy pediatric (n = 15) and adult (n = 15) volunteers were measured using commercially available fluorescent bead immunoassay and analyzed in combination with clinical data. Interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10) and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-3ß levels were significantly higher in patient cohort including pediatric and adult cases with COVID-19 when compared with all healthy volunteers (p ≤ .001 in each) and whereas IP-10 levels were significantly higher in both pediatric and adult cases with severe disease course, MIP-3ß were significantly lower in healthy controls. Additionally, IP-10 is an independent predictor for disease severity, particularly in children and interleukin-6 seems a relatively good predictor for disease severity in adults. IP-10 and MIP-3ß seem good research candidates to understand severity of COVID-19 in both pediatric and adult population and to investigate possible pathophysiological mechanism of COVID-19.

RESUMO

It is still not fully understood how to predict the future prognosis of patients at the diagnosis coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to the wide clinical range of the disease. We aimed to evaluate whether severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral load could predict the clinical course of pediatric patients. This study was conducted retrospectively with medical records of pediatric patients who were tested for SARS-CoV2 between April 12 and October 25, 2020 in the University of Health Sciences, Ankara Educating and Training Hospital and Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. We evaluated 518 pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and classified according to severity as asymptomatic (16.2%), mild (59.6%), moderate (20.2%), and critical/severe (3.9%) cases. We analyzed patients in four groups in terms of ages: <4, 5-9, 10-14, and 15-17 years. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of ∆Ct value among age groups, different gender and the existence of underlying diseases in each disease course. The ∆Ct values were relatively lower in the first 2 days of symptoms than after days in all groups. Our study has indicated that children with COVID-19 have similar amount of viral load in all disease courses irrespective of the age and underlying disease. It should be taken into account that, regardless of the severity of the disease, pediatric patients may have a role in the transmission chain.

RESUMO

Background: There are conflicting data with regard to the impact of respiratory and allergic comorbidities on the course of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between allergic diseases and COVID-19 severity in pediatric patients. Methods: Seventy-five pediatric patients with COVID-19 were classified according to clinical severity and evaluated in the allergy/immunology and pulmonology departments 1 to 3 months after the infection resolved. Blood was collected from the patients for a complete blood cell count and assessment of immunoglobulin and total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, and skin-prick tests and spirometry tests were performed. Results: A total of 75 patients ages 5-18 years were evaluated. COVID-19 was asymptomatic/mild in 44 patients and moderate/severe/critical in 31 patients. Based on allergy evaluation, allergic rhinitis was diagnosed in 19 patients (25.3%), asthma in 10 patients (13%), and atopic dermatitis in 3 patients (4%). Aeroallergen sensitivity was detected in 26 patients (34.7%). COVID-19 infection was asymptomatic/mild in 15 patients with allergic rhinitis (78.9%) and in 21 with aeroallergen sensitivity (80.8%) (p = 0.038 and p = 0.005, respectively). There was no difference in severity between the patients with and without asthma (p = 0.550). The median (interquartile range) total IgE level was significantly higher in the asymptomatic/mild group (71.8 [30.7-211.2]) (p = 0.015). There were no differences in terms of spirometry parameters. Conclusion: Aeroallergen sensitization and allergic rhinitis in children may be associated with a milder course of COVID-19. The knowledge that atopy is associated with less-severe COVID-19 outcomes in children may guide clinical risk classification.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of infections leading to sepsis is needed to develop comprehensive infection prevention and sepsis, as well as early recognition and treatment strategies. The aim of this study was to investigate the etiology of sepsis and evaluate the proportion of respiratory viral pathogens in infants under two years of age with possible sepsis. METHODS: The prospective study was performed in two years. Multiplex reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed to detect viral pathogens. All patients who were included in this study had sepsis symptoms as defined by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign. RESULTS: We compared 90 patients with sepsis into three groups as patients (n = 33) who had only viral positivity in nasopharyngeal swab, patients (17) had proven bacterial infection with or without viral infection, and patients (40) without the pathogen detection. Human rhinovirus (16.7%) and influenza (7.8%) were the most commonly seen viruses. A cough was more common in the viral infection group than other groups ( P = 0.02) and median thrombocyte count was lower in the bacterial infection group than the others ( P = 0.01). Patients having bacterial sepsis had the longest duration of hospitalization than the other groups ( P = 0.04). During winter and spring seaons, patients with sepsis had more viral infection; however, in summer and autumn period, patients were mostly in a state that we could not prove infection agents ( P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that respiratory tract viruses may play an important role in patients with sepsis and they should be kept in mind, especially during winter and spring seasons. In overall infection, viral respiratory viruses as a single pathogen with a detection rate of 36.6% in sepsis etiology.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Catheter related blood stream infections (CRBSI) are mostly preventable hospital-acquired conditions. We aimed to investigate the value of presepsin in detection of CRBSI in hospitalized children. METHODS: Hospitalized pediatric patients who had clinical suspicion of CRBSI were followed. Results of peripheral blood cultures and blood cultures from central venous catheters, procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP), total white blood cell (WBC) counts were recorded. Serum samples for presepsin were studied at the same time with the samples of healthy controls. The patients with positive blood cultures were defined as proven CRBSI and with negative cultures as suspected CRBSI. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients and 80 healthy controls were included in the study. Proven CRBSI group consisted of 36 patients (62%) with positive blood cultures and compared with the suspected CRBSI group (n = 22, 36%) with negative culture results. There was no difference between proven and suspected CRBSI groups concerning WBC, PCT, CRP and presepsin. Presepsin was significantly higher in patient groups when compared with healthy controls. The receiver operating characteristic curve area under the curve was 0.98 (%95 CI: 0.97-1) and best cut-off value was 990 pg/ml. CONCLUSION: In hospitalized pediatric patients with CRBSI, presepsin may be a helpful rapid marker in early diagnosis.

RESUMO

With improvements in molecular diagnostic methods, report of Human bocavirus (HBoV) as an etiologic agent in many studies on viral respiratory and gastrointestinal infections has been increasing. Two pediatric patients who presented with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis were examined for etiologic causes, including viruses. Whole bacterial and fungal cultures and viral serological studies were negative. Viral polymerase chain reaction of nasopharyngeal secretions showed HBoV. One was successfully treated with intravenous immunoglobulins, whereas the other died with multiorgan failure. Here we report 2 pediatric patients with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and detection of HBoV as the sole agent, predicting an association.

RESUMO

Chryseobacterium indologenes is a widespread bacteria in the environment, especially hospitals, and a rarely reported human pathogen. The lowest frequency has been reported in children under 5 years of age. Clinical manifestations of C. indologenes include nosocomial pneumoniae, biliary tract infection, peritonitis, surgical wound infection, intravascular catheter-related bacteremia, cellulitis, and primary bacteremia. There is a knowledge gap in the management of C. indologenes infections, especially pertaining children, because of multiple antibiotic resistance and limited data in the literature concerning effective empirical treatment. In the published literature, a total of 16 cases of C. indologenes infections were reported in the pediatric age group. Herein, we present our experience in 6 children with C. indologenes infections. Early and prompt management of C. indologenes infections, particularly in children with mechanic ventilation, with polymicrobial infections, and under the age of 2 years, is of major importance because these factors seem to have a negative effect on the prognosis of infections caused by C. indologenes. Ciprofloxacin and TPM-SMX may be the best therapeutic choices for a combined initial empirical treatment of the patients.

RESUMO

The management of Gram-negative bacterial infections poses a significant challenge due to the emergence of highly effective antibiotic-resistant mechanisms, leading to treatment failures, particularly among hospitalized children. This patient population experiences elevated rates of both mortality and morbidity, and the available antibiotic options against these bacteria are limited. Carbapenems, such as meropenem, represent one of the choices for treatment. While meropenem is highly effective against Gram-negative bacteria, the prevalence of multidrug-resistant infections in hospitals has become a growing concern. In response to this challenge, exploring innovative strategies is crucial. One such strategy is the implementation of high-dose extended meropenem infusion treatment. Researchers propose that extended meropenem treatment may offer a viable solution to combat resistant bacteria. Despite a limited number of studies focusing on the effectiveness of this strategy in children, our comprehensive review of the literature revealed promising findings. Our examination specifically compared extended infusion with standard infusion approaches. The evidence suggests that extended infusion of meropenem provides more benefits compared to standard infusion methods. Researchers consistently reported positive results in their observations, with the exception noted in very low birth weight neonates and children with infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteria and Acinetobacter baumannii spp. In conclusion, extended meropenem infusion treatment emerges as a promising option for managing resistant infections. However, it is essential to underscore the need for further studies to robustly support the observed benefits of this treatment regimen.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition increases the complications and mortality in critically-ill children. We performed a retrospective analysis to define the impact of malnutrition on the outcomes of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) due to COVID-19. METHODS: Patients with MIS-C were evaluated for demographic features, anthropometric parameters, clinical findings and outcomes. Patients with z scores of body mass index (> 5 years) and weight-for-age (< 5 years) < -2 were considered malnourished. Sarcopenia was defined by total psoas muscle area (tPMA), calculated on abdominal computed tomography (CT) at the level of L3 and L4 vertebrae. The z scores <- 2 for tPMA were considered sarcopenia. The results of patients with and without malnutrition were compared. RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients were included. Forty-four percent (n=12) of patients had malnutrition. Malnutrition was classified as mild to moderate (1/3), severe (1/3) and overweight (1/3). Eighty-two % of cases had acute malnutrition. Among MIS-C symptom criteria, rash was significantly higher in children with malnutrition (p<0.05). Laboratory investigations showed higher ferritin levels in patients with malnutrition (p<0.05). The median tPMA and sarcopenia were significantly higher in patients with malnutrition when compared to patients without malnutrition (42% vs 7%, p<0.05). The oral feeding time, complication rates, and length of hospital stay were similar in both groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Children with MIS-C already had mild to severe malnutrition at admission. Rash and higher ferritin levels were more common in patients with malnutrition. In addition to anthropometric parameters, sarcopenia calculated using tPMA can be used to predict malnutrition in critically-ill children.

RESUMO

We aimed to determine the epidemiology and resistance patterns of Gram-negative bacteria, the risk factors and outcome of bloodstream infection (BSI). In all, 412 episodes in children who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of bacteremia were analyzed. The most common microorganisms were Klebsiella spp. (43.9%), Escherichia coli (13.5 %) and Acinetobacter spp. (10.6 %). Among isolates, 41.2 % were multidrug-resistant, 13.5 % were extensively drug-resistant and 0.4 % were pan-drug-resistant. Carbapenem resistance was revealed in 27.6 % of isolates. Carbapenem and colistin resistance increased over the years. The most common risk factors were the presence of a central-venous catheter and pediatric intensive care unit admission. Clinical response and infection-related mortality were significantly different in cases infected with carbapenem-resistant gram-negative (CRGN) vs carbapenem-susceptible gram-negative bacteria. The increase in multi-resistant Klebsiella spp. seems to be the biggest obstacles in fight against nosocomial infections. The increasing number of CRGN infections over the years affects both the clinical response and mortality rate of BSI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is a crucial balance between oxidant and antioxidant defense mechanisms. We aimed to evaluate the role of the balance of these systems in children with bloodstream infection. METHODS: We analyzed prospectively oxidant and antioxidant stress parameters from serum samples of children with BSI besides demographic and clinical data of children. Serum levels of the total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), albumin, plasma thiol, disulphide, catalase (CAT), myeloperoxidase (MPO), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels, ferroxidase and arylesterase (ARES) activity were evaluated in both patients and healthy controls. RESULTS: A total of 113 children were evaluated, 50 of them had bacteremia and the remaining 63 were healthy subjects. The median TOS values were 18.5 µmol H2O2/L and 13.1 µmol H2O2/L in patient and control groups, respectively with a statistically significant difference between groups. The mean serum IMA levels were 0.8±0.1 absorbance unit (ABSU) in patients and 0.5±0.09 ABSU in control, the difference between groups was statistically significant. The native thiol, total thiol levels and the disulphide levels were significantly lower in the patient group as compared with the control group. The myeloperoxidase level was 136 U/L in patients and 107 in controls with a statistically significant difference between groups. CONCLUSIONS: TOS, IMA, MPO, and particularly plasma thiols seem good candidates for accurate diagnosis of bacteremia in children.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The coronavirus disease pandemic is a major problem that the world has been facing since December 2019. It mainly affects the respiratory system; however, the disease can affect the kidneys to different degrees. This study aimed to determine the changes in tubular dysfunction and inflammation parameters in children with coronavirus disease using urine biomarkers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 36 children who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 on real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction using respiratory specimens. Coronavirus disease-positive and -negative period parameters were evaluated. For measurement of interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, and urine ß2 microglobulin levels, patients' urine samples were collected at diagnosis and 1 month after discharge. Additionally, routine urine and hematological parameters were evaluated concurrently. RESULTS: For all patients, the median urine ß2 microglobulin, serum urea, and lactate dehydrogenase levels were significantly higher in the coronavirus disease-positive period than in the coronavirus disease-negative period (P < .05). Further, serum platelet count was significantly lower in the coronavirus disease-positive period than in the coronavirus disease-negative period (P < .05). However, there was no difference in serum creatinine, interleukin-6, or interleukin-1ß levels between the 2 periods (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest kidney involvement and tubular dysfunction in patients with asymptomatic, mild, and moderate infections. Furthermore, interleukin-1ß and interleukin-6 levels were high in the urine, even in non-critically ill patients. We believe that these findings contribute to the accumulation of evidence on continued inflammation in the kidney.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Limited data are available for pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), especially with regard to disease management strategies. OBJECTIVE: To assess the children with COVID-19. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of pediatric patients on March 11 and May 23, 2020. RESULTS: We evaluated 77 COVID-19 pediatric patients, of whom 45.5% were male, with a median age of 8 years (interquartile range [IQR] = 2-13), and 6.4% had underlying diseases. Patients were classified according to severity, with the percentages of asymptomatic, mild, moderate, and critical/severe cases determined to be 24.7%, 41.6%, 29.9%, and 3.9%, respectively. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and mechanic ventilation were only required for 1 patient. Targeted therapies were used in 3 patients. CONCLUSION: The disease course of COVID-19 appears to be milder in children than in adults, and the treatment course primarily consists of supportive care.
