RESUMO

The electric monopole (E0) transition strength ρ^{2} for the transition connecting the third 0^{+} level, a "superdeformed" band head, to the "spherical" 0^{+} ground state in doubly magic ^{40}Ca is determined via e^{+}e^{-} pair-conversion spectroscopy. The measured value ρ^{2}(E0;0_{3}^{+}→0_{1}^{+})=2.3(5)×10^{-3} is the smallest ρ^{2}(E0;0^{+}→0^{+}) found in A<50 nuclei. In contrast, the E0 transition strength to the ground state observed from the second 0^{+} state, a band head of "normal" deformation, is an order of magnitude larger ρ^{2}(E0;0_{2}^{+}→0_{1}^{+})=25.9(16)×10^{-3}, which shows significant mixing between these two states. Large-scale shell-model (LSSM) calculations are performed to understand the microscopic structure of the excited states and the configuration mixing between them; experimental ρ^{2} values in ^{40}Ca and neighboring isotopes are well reproduced by the LSSM calculations. The unusually small ρ^{2}(E0;0_{3}^{+}→0_{1}^{+}) value is due to destructive interference in the mixing of shape-coexisting structures, which are based on several different multiparticle-multihole excitations. This observation goes beyond the usual treatment of E0 strengths, where two-state shape mixing cannot result in destructive interference.

RESUMO

This Letter reports the first scientific results from the observation of antineutrinos emitted by fission products of ^{235}U at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. PROSPECT, the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment, consists of a segmented 4 ton ^{6}Li-doped liquid scintillator detector covering a baseline range of 7-9 m from the reactor and operating under less than 1 m water equivalent overburden. Data collected during 33 live days of reactor operation at a nominal power of 85 MW yield a detection of 25 461±283 (stat) inverse beta decays. Observation of reactor antineutrinos can be achieved in PROSPECT at 5σ statistical significance within 2 h of on-surface reactor-on data taking. A reactor model independent analysis of the inverse beta decay prompt energy spectrum as a function of baseline constrains significant portions of the previously allowed sterile neutrino oscillation parameter space at 95% confidence level and disfavors the best fit of the reactor antineutrino anomaly at 2.2σ confidence level.

RESUMO

Measurements of the detection efficiency as a function of deposited electron energy in a liquid scintillation cocktail between 4 keV and 49 keV are obtained using the ZoMBieS method. Comparison is made between the measured data and the Poisson-Birks detection efficiency model. Measurements of the Birks non-linearity parameter, kB, and the linearised scintillation response of each photomultiplier, ω(i), were made using these data. However, the value of kB that best linearises the scintillator response is found to vary depending upon which photomultiplier is used in its determination, and the measured kB and ω(i) vary depending on the external source geometry. The cause of this behaviour is unknown. The triple-coincident detection efficiency appears to be unaffected by any systematic errors.

RESUMO

Activity measurements of (3)H were performed using the triple to double coincidence ratio method for the 2009 international comparison organized by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). The activity obtained by using the FPGA (field programmable gate array) acquisition system and software event analysis was compared to that using MAC3 (Module d'Acquisition de Coincidences triples). Agreement to better than 0.4% was obtained. The stability of sources prepared in Ultima Gold, Ultima Gold LLT, Insta-Gel Plus and Optiphase "Hisafe"-3 over 140 days is presented.

RESUMO

Radiation transport simulations of the most probable gamma- and X-ray emissions of (123)I and (54)Mn in a three photomultiplier tube liquid scintillation detector have been carried out. A Geant4 simulation was used to acquire energy deposition spectra and interaction probabilities with the scintillant, as required for absolute activity measurement using the triple to double coincidence ratio (TDCR) method. A sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of the simulation model is presented here. The uncertainty in the Monte Carlo simulation results due to the input parameter uncertainties was found to be more significant than the statistical uncertainty component for a typical number of simulated decay events. The model was most sensitive to changes in the volume of the scintillant. Estimates of the relative uncertainty associated with the simulation outputs due to the combined stochastic and input uncertainties are provided. A Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis of an (123)I TDCR measurement indicated that accounting for the simulation uncertainties increases the uncertainty of efficiency of the logical sum of double coincidence by 5.1%.
