RESUMO

Cellulolytic enzymes have been studied in several organisms, such as insects, molluscs and other organisms, which can have enzymes endogenously produced or by symbiotic microorganisms. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down the cellulosic material upon which these organisms feed, probably with the aim of assimilating the sugars and nutrients. As Teredinidae bivalves grown in mangrove trees, this study aimed to measure endo-ß-1,4-glucanase activity in different organs and its content. Endo-ß-1,4-glucanase activity was detected in different organs of the Teredinidae bivalves, including gills and digestive organs tissues and its content. Moreover, organisms such as teredinids grow up inside wood and this process could perhaps be related to creating growth space. All the endoglucanase extracts, from organs tissues and contents, showed maximum activity at 40 °C. The maximum activity was observed at pH 5.5 for all the extracts, except for intestine tissue, which maximum was at pH 6. Moreover, some of the extracts showed a different profile of the activity as a pH influence, suggesting different distribution of enzymes over the digestive system of the teredinids. The results suggested that the endo-ß-1,4-glucanase from Teredinidae could be applied in process that requires low temperature, such as, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, since it presents lower optimum temperature in comparison to enzymes from terrestrial microorganisms.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Building on previous suboptimal survival results, we aimed to perform a study of the epidemiological status, management, and outcomes of germ cell tumors (GCT) in the Portuguese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective populational study of GCT cases diagnosed between 2008 and 2012 in southern Portugal. Joinpoint regression was used to compute average annual percentage change (AAPC) in incidence rate. ESMO/EAU guidelines served as references to evaluate compliance. Association between compliance with guidelines and hospital GCT case load was performed by generalized estimating equation. Survival was calculated by Kaplan-Meier and prognostic factors by Cox models. RESULTS: The study included 401 GCT male cases. The AAPC was 5.4% (IC 95% 3.3-7.4, P < .001) from 1999 (an earlier cohort published) to 2012. The median time to diagnosis was 63 days (Q25 = 33 days; Q75 = 114 days; IQR = 81 days). For stage II/III the median time to start chemotherapy was 34 days (Q25 = 22 days; Q75 = 56 days; IQR = 22 days). In 86% cases there was noncompliance with guidelines for the orchiectomy report, 6% for staging, 38% for tumor markers evaluation, 20% for treatment and 25% for chemotherapy dose intensity. The 5-year overall survival was 93.8% (95% CI, 91.3%-96.4%). Hospitals that managed ≤ 3 GCT cases/ year had higher odds for noncompliance with guidelines of blood markers, treatment and dose intensity. None of GCT healthcare access and management factors studied were associated with prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: The burden of GCT is rising in Portugal. Although survival has improved, efforts must be made to nationally enhance training and expertise in GCT and support region adapted models of centralization of care.

RESUMO

Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer death in females worldwide. Rapid research advancements add to the complexity of treatment options for this disease. It is known that the quality of patients' care is deeply affected by healthcare professionals following these advancements. There is a growing need for academic education to increase clinical knowledge and skills of physicians treating BC patients. The certificate of Competence in Breast Cancer Program (CCB) is a Certificate in Advanced Studies (CAS) organized by the European School of Oncology in cooperation with Ulm University (Germany), which focuses on both the clinical and scientific competence required for improving quality in the management of BC patients. This paper describes the experience of the second CCB cohort (CCB2), which brought together 24 physicians from four continents who shared the common will to improve their competence and skills in BC treatment.

RESUMO

Metastatic prostate cancer recurrence after definitive local therapy can occur in any tissue. Usually, the first affected site is the bone. Lung metastases without bone or lymph node involvement are extremely rare in patients with prostate cancer, and only a handful of cases are reported in the literature. In several other malignancies, such as breast cancer, sarcomas, colorectal cancer, and renal cell carcinoma, long-term disease-free survival has been reported after resection of solitary pulmonary metastases. We present three unusual cases of isolated pulmonary recurrence of prostate cancer after initial definitive local therapy. One of the patients underwent resection of the lung metastasis, resulting in a long-term disease-free survival. Both surgical excision of solitary and oligometastatic lung secondary lesions and systemic therapy can play an important role in long-term disease control. Surgery should be considered for selected and well-informed patients with pulmonary metastasis after primary localised treatment for prostate cancer.

Measles is considered one of the most contagious diseases in the world (1). It’s able to reach all of age groups with particular risk in under five and 15-29 years old (2). It’s one of the main causes for evitable deaths for vaccine between children (3). According to recents measles outbreaks occurred in the world, Brazil is included in it, since 2000 has eliminated measles circulation and actually has been dealing with outbreaks of little dimension of imported cases, at risk of large outbreak during the World Cup 2014 and The Olympics Games 2016? Through analysis of the latest outbreaks ocurred all over the world and research of vaccine coverage in Brazil, the authors will answer to these questions.
