RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for multiple brain metastases has been recently controversially discussed. This study was aimed to explore the feasibility of Hippocampus-Avoidance Whole-Brain Radiotherapy plus a simultaneous integrated boost (HA-WBRT + SIB) in patients with multiple brain metastases and assess tumor control in comparison with Hippocampus-Avoidance Whole-Brain Radiotherapy (HA-WBRT) alone for brain metastases. METHODS: In this study, 63 patients with multiple brain metastases (≥ 4 metastases) had undergone HA-WBRT + SIB between January 2016 and December 2020 in the observation group:HA-WBRT (30 Gy in 12 fractions, the maximum dose of the hippocampus ≤ 14 Gy) plus a simultaneous integrated boost (48 Gy in 12 fractions) for brain metastases.Overall Survival (OS), Median survival, intracranial control (IC = control within the entire brain), intracranial progression-free survival (iPFS) and adverse events were compared with the control group (a HA-WBRT retrospective cohort) by propensity score matching analysis. RESULTS: After 1:1 propensity score matching, there were 56 patients in each group (the observation group, the control group). OS, median survival and iPFS were significantly longer in the observation group (18.4 vs. 10.9 months, P<0.001), (13.0 vs. 8.0 months, P<0.001), (13.9 vs.7.8 months, P<0.001). In comparison of 1-year-IC rates, the observation group also demonstrated higher than the control group (51.8% vs. 21.4%, P = 0.002), respectively. Seven hippocampal metastases were found in the control group (4/56,7.1%) and the observation group (3/56,5.4%) after HA-WBRT. The death rate of intracranial progression were 23.2% in the observation group and 37.5% in the control group. All adverse events were not significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: HA-WBRT + SIB resulted in better OS,median survival, IC, iPFS, an acceptable risk of radiation response, and a potential way of declining neurocognitive adverse events, which may be a better treatment for patients with multiple brain metastases.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an important characteristic in the remodelling of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). IL-36γ and fibroblast activation protein (FAP) may exacerbate remodelling in CRS. Here, we aimed to determine whether IL-36γ and FAP expression are associated with EMT and may be a predictor for CRSwNP prognosis. METHODS: Fifty-two non-Eos CRSwNP patients and 12 control patients were obtained and were followed up for more than 1 year after surgery. IL-36γ, FAP and EMT markers expression were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot. Masson trichrome staining was adopted to assess tissue fibrotic changes. Furthermore, the soluble form of IL-36γ and FAP in nasal secretions was detected by ELISA. RESULTS: While basal expression of E-cadherin decreased, the expression of IL-36γ, vimentin and FAP increased in nasal polyps. In well-prognosis patients, the expression of IL-36γ, vimentin and FAP were significantly decreased than in poor-prognosis patients, while the protein expression of E-cadherin was increased. The protein expression of IL-36γ was notably increased in recurrent nasal polyps than in preoperation specimens. A positive relationship between IL-36γ and FAP expression, a negative relationship between IL-36γ and E-cad expression was noted. The soluble form of IL-36γ and FAP increased during the development of non-Eos CRSwNP, with the highest level in poor-prognosis patients after surgery. CONCLUSION: Non-Eos CRSwNP have partially undergone EMT under baseline conditions. IL-36γ and FAP expression were related with EMT, the soluble form of IL-36γ and FAP in nasal secretions may predict the prognosis of patients.

RESUMO

Optical phased array (OPA) is a promising beam steering component for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems. For most LiDAR applications, two-dimensional (2D, lateral and longitudinal) beam steering with large field of view is required. To achieve large lateral and longitudinal field of view, waveguide with nonuniform spacing and broadband tunable laser source is commonly utilized, resulting in complex structure and high cost. Here, a 2D OPA with large field of view is proposed and demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. Assisted by an improved optical antenna and polarization switch, lateral and longitudinal steering range could be both significantly improved. The experimental results show the steering ranges are 99.24° × 15.62° and 96.48° × 16.08° for transverse electric mode and transverse magnetic mode, respectively. The proposed scheme provides a promising approach to realize the integrated OPA with large field of view.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a poorly understood disorder, very common even after total hip arthroplasty (THA). It is widely considered that inflammation response play a role in the pathogenesis of POCD. AIMS: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether inflammation cytokine concentrations could serve as biomarkers for POCD in patients undergoing THA. METHODS: A systematic search of databases was conducted to retrieve publications measuring circulating inflammatory markers of patients with and without POCD after THA. Inflammatory markers identified in more than two studies were pooled. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated for each outcome. Fail-safe N statistics was calculated to estimate possible publication bias. RESULTS: The pooled incidence rate of POCD after THA by combining 11 cohort studies was 31%. A total of five inflammatory markers, CRP, S-100B, IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α, were assessed. Significantly higher pre-operative CRP (P = 0.012) and S-100B (P < 0.0001) as well as post-operative CPR (P = 0.005) and IL-6 (P < 0.0001) at 6 h were found in POCD compared with non-POCD patients undergoing THA. Fail-safe N statistics revealed that these results are robust. DISCUSSION: The current evidence suggests that some of the inflammatory markers, including CRP, S-100B, and IL-6, were correlated with the occurrence of POCD after THA. CONCLUSION: Monitor of inflammatory markers might help early diagnosis of POCD after THA and development of preventive strategies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze the histopathologic changes in recurrent nasal polyps (NPs) in terms of tissue inflammatory cells infiltration and mucosal remodeling. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with primary NPs requiring a revision surgery during follow-up and a matched control group of 35 primary NP patients without recurrence were retrospectively enrolled. Histopathologic examination was performed of tissue inflammatory cells, subepithelial edema, epithelial cell hyperplasia, basement membrane thickness, and fibrosis. RESULTS: The mean eosinophil and neutrophil counts, proportions of eosinophil and neutrophil, as well as total inflammatory cell count were significantly higher in the recurrent group than those in the controls. Higher subepithelial edema was seen in the recurrent group. Within the recurrent group, the mean tissue eosinophil count and relative eosinophilia reduced from the first operation to revision surgery, whereas neutrophil count and proportion, and total inflammatory cell counts remained unchanged. Subepithelial edema and epithelial cell hyperplasia were significantly reduced after the first surgical procedure. CONCLUSION: NP recurrence is associated with higher inflammatory grade (especially in eosinophilia and neutrophilia). Surgical and corticoid treatments may have an impact on mucosal histopathologic changes but need further certification.

RESUMO

The extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) is mainly induced by metalloproteinases (MMPs). Zn2+ is an essential component of MMPs, but the effect of Zn2+ importers in controlling ECM metabolism remains unclear. The purpose of this research was to identify the involvement of Zn2+ importers in ECM degradation induced by inflammatory stimuli and excessive mechanical stressing. In this study, NPCs from Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were separated and cultured. FluoZin-3 AM staining was applied to detect [Zn2+]i in NPCs treated with Interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) or cyclic tensile strain (CTS) with a Flexcell Strain Unit. We found that intracellular Zn2+ concentration ([Zn2+]i) elevated dramatically, and ZIP8 is the predominant Zn2+ importer among all importers in senescent NPCs. The [Zn2+]i and MMP expression level both increased in IL-1ß and CTS treated NPCs. Furthermore, the expression of ZIP8 was also markedly increased. However, knockdown of ZIP8 with siRNA alleviated ECM degradation induced by inflammatory stimuli and CTS. Both stimuli activated NF-κB signaling pathway, and knockdown of ZIP8 effectively inhibited NF-κB signaling pathway activation. In conclusion, knockdown of ZIP8 can alleviate NPCs' ECM degradation caused by inflammatory stimuli and excessive mechanical stressing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The lack of knowledge regarding the pathogenesis and host immune response during SARS-CoV-2 infection has limited the development of effective treatments. Thus, we longitudinally investigated the dynamic changes in peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets and parallel changes in cytokine levels in COVID-19 patients with different disease severities to further address disease pathogenesis. METHODS: A total of 67 patients (10 moderate, 38 severe and 19 critical cases) with COVID-19 admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Wuhan from February 8th to April 6th, 2020 were retrospectively studied. Dynamic data of lymphocyte subsets and inflammatory cytokines were collected. RESULTS: On admission, compared with moderate cases, severe and critical cases showed significantly decreased levels of total lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, B cells and NK cells. IL-6 and IL-10 were significantly higher in the critical group. During the following hospitalization period, most of the lymphocyte subsets in the critical group began to recover to levels comparable to those in the severe group from the fourth week after illness onset, except for NK cells, which recovered after the sixth week. A sustained decrease in the lymphocyte subsets and an increase in IL-6 and IL-10 were observed in the nonsurvivors until death. There was a strong negative correlation between IL-6 and IL-10 and total lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells and NK cells. CONCLUSIONS: A sustained decrease in lymphocyte subsets, especially CD4+ T cells and NK cells, interacting with proinflammatory cytokine storms was associated with severe disease and poor prognosis in COVID-19.

RESUMO

This study was set out to determine the function of LAMC2 in laryngeal cancer (LC). Initially, we identified the expression of LAMC2 in LC cells and tissues using TCGA datasets, GEO datasets (GSE143224), qRT-PCR, and western blot. Besides, we analyzed the correlations between LAMC2 and clinicopathologic features in LC patients. The CCK-8 assays were performed to detect cell viability and the half-maximal inhibitory concentration of cetuximab (IC50) in LC cells. We explored the correlations between LAMC2 and EGFR and further explored the regulation mechanism of cetuximab in LC. This study identified a high expression of LAMC2 in LC cells and tissues. The expression levels of LAMC2 were associated with TNM classification, lymph node (LN) metastasis, differentiation, and overall survival (OS). LAMC2 significantly promoted cell proliferation and cell viability. Besides, cetuximab significantly inhibited LAMC2 expression levels. LAMC2 significantly reversed the effect of cetuximab suppressing cell proliferation in LC cells. In conclusion, LAMC2 may act as a novel anti-cancer target in LC.

RESUMO

The determination of the ploidy level of an organism is a prerequisite for studies of evolution, cellular function, and genomic construction. Identification of the ploidy of the economically important red alga Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis has been hindered by its small genome and large number of chromosomes. Therefore, in the current study, PloidyNGS, a tool that calculates the number of reads supporting different alleles at each position along the genome sequence, and fluorescence in situ hybridization coupled with tyramide signal amplification (TSA-FISH) were used to clarify the ploidy of G. lemaneiformis. In addition, flow cytometry (FCM) was used to estimate the ploidy of different somatic cells. The PloidyNGS results showed that most of the alleles in the gametophyte were monomorphic, whereas the TSA-FISH results showed that one hybridization signal was observed in gametophytic nuclei and two in tetrasporophytic nuclei when the nuclei were hybridized by single copy gene probes. These results confirmed that G. lemaneiformis is a haploid in the gametophytic generation and diploid in the sporophytic generation. Moreover, the FCM result suggested that G. lemaneiformis was not an endopolyploid. Based on previous studies, we hypothesize that the nuclear number is important for the cellular differentiation and function of this species. We also suggest that G. lemaneiformis evolved from a paleopolyploid, the genome of which has been diploidized, and that traces of genomic doubling are no longer apparent. Thus, this study provides important evidence for further studies on the evolution and genomes of red algae.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between serum complement component 3 (C3) levels and disease recurrences in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (NPs). METHODS: Ninety-seven patients with NPs and 30 controls were recruited. Clinical features were collected. Serum concentrations of C3 and C4 were measured before and after endoscopic sinus surgery. RESULTS: Compared to the controls, increased C3 levels were found in patients with NPs. Patients with polyp recurrences had higher pre- and postoperative serum C3 levels than patients without polyp recurrences. Serum C3 levels dropped after surgery. After polyp regrowth, the mean C3 level in the recurrent group elevated again to the degree similar to that before surgery. When patients were stratified by tissue eosinophilia, no significant difference was seen in pre-/postoperative, absolute change after surgery, and post-recurrent C3 levels between patients without and with eosinophilic NPs in the group with disease recurrences. CONCLUSION: Serum C3 may be involved in the pathogenesis of NPs. Higher serum C3 levels may pinpoint patients at high risk of recurrence as an independent factor. Furthermore, the change in C3 levels after surgery may have the potential to serve as a predictor for polyp progression. Adding serum C3 measurement to the routine walk-up in the clinical management of NPs is worth further investigation and may help physicians make a more rational diagnostic and/or therapeutic decision regarding this disease.

RESUMO

In this study, a simple and effective method for the simultaneous analysis of Cl, Br, and I in geological materials based on NH4HF2 digestion in open vessels (Savillex Teflon vials) is proposed. It is very interesting to note that Cl, Br, and I are not lost during NH4HF2 digestion at temperatures of 200-240 °C for 0.5-12 h in open vessels. This should be related to the alkaline atmosphere environment caused by the NH3 produced during NH4HF2 digestion, which suppresses the volatilization loss of Cl, Br, and I. A 100 mg sample of geological materials can be completely digested by using 400 mg of NH4HF2 at 220 °C for 2 h in Savillex Teflon vials. The use of new Savillex Teflon vials significantly reduced the procedural blanks of halogens compared with the old Savillex Teflon vials. The developed method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of Cl, Br, and I in a series of international geological reference materials. Most of the results were found to be in reasonable agreement with values reported in the literature. This simple, rapid, effective, and economical analytical method will significantly promote the development of halogen geochemistry.

RESUMO

Free-flow isoelectric focusing (FFIEF) has the merits of mild separation conditions, high recovery and resolution, but suffers from the issues of ampholytes interference and high cost due to expensive carrier ampholytes. In this paper, a home-made carrier ampholyte-free FFIEF system was constructed via orientated migration of H+ and OH- provided by electrode solutions. When applying an electric field, a linear pH gradient from pH 4 to 9 (R2 = 0.994) was automatically formed by the electromigration of protons and hydroxyl ions in the separation chamber. The carrier ampholyte-free FFIEF system not only avoids interference of ampholyte to detection but also guarantees high separation resolution by establishing stable pH gradient. The separation selectivity was conveniently adjusted by controlling operating voltage and optimizing the composition, concentration and flow rate of the carrier buffer. The constructed system was applied to separation of proteins in egg white, followed by MADLI-TOF-MS identification. Three major proteins, ovomucoid, ovalbumin and ovotransferrin, were successfully separated according to their pI values with 15 mmol/L Tris-acetic acid (pH = 6.5) as carrier buffer at a flow rate of 12.9 mL/min.

RESUMO

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications are major public health concerns which strongly influence the quality of humans' life. Modification of gut microbiota has been widely used for the management of diabetes. In this review, the relationship between diabetes and gut microbiota, as well as the effects of different dietary components and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on gut microflora are summarized. Dietary compounds and TCM possessing bioactive components (fiber and phytochemicals) first change the composition of gut microbiota (inhibiting pathogens and promoting the beneficial bacteria growth) and then influence the production of their metabolites, which would further modify the intestinal environment through inhibiting the production of detrimental compounds (such as lipopolysaccharide, hydrogen sulfide, indol, etc.). Importantly, metabolites (short chain fatty acids and other bioactive components) fermented/degraded by gut microbiota can target multiple pathways in intestine, liver, pancreas, etc., resulting in the improvement of gut health, glycemic control, lipids profile, insulin resistance and inflammation. Furthermore, understanding the interaction between different dietary components and gut microbiota, as well as underlying mechanisms would help design different diet formula for the management of diabetes. Further researches could focus on the combination of different dietary components for preventing and treating diabetes, based on the principle of "multiple components against multiple targets" from the perspective of gut microbiota.

RESUMO

The retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor (ROR) γt receptor is a member of nuclear receptors, which is indispensable for the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-17. RORγt has been established as a drug target to design and discover novel treatments for multiple inflammatory and immunological diseases. It is important to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of how RORγt is activated by an agonist, and how the transcription function of RORγt is interrupted by an inverse agonist. In this study we performed molecular dynamics simulations on four different RORγt systems, i.e., the apo protein, protein bound with agonist, protein bound with inverse agonist in the orthosteric-binding pocket, and protein bound with inverse agonist in the allosteric-binding pocket. We found that the orthosteric-binding pocket in the apo-form RORγt was mostly open, confirming that apo-form RORγt was constitutively active and could be readily activated (ca. tens of nanoseconds scale). The tracked data from MD simulations supported that RORγt could be activated by an agonist binding at the orthosteric-binding pocket, because the bound agonist helped to enhance the triplet His479-Tyr502-Phe506 interactions and stabilized H12 structure. The stabilized H12 helped RORγt to form the protein-binding site, and therefore made the receptor ready to recruit a coactivator molecule. We also showed that transcription function of RORγt could be interrupted by the binding of inverse agonist at the orthosteric-binding pocket or at the allosteric-binding site. After the inverse agonist was bound, H12 either structurally collapsed, or reorientated to a different position, at which the presumed protein-binding site was not able to be formed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the serum vitamin D level in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps and its correlation with the disease severity. SETTING: Hospital of Zhejiang University. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of collected data. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyps who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were recruited. Demographic information including age, gender, body mass index, smoke history, atopic status and asthma was collected. Disease severity was measured by the Lund-Mackay CT score and Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 score. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay preoperatively. RESULTS: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels were significantly lower in patients with nasal polyps (CRSwNP, 38.2 ±â€¯9.1 nmol/L; CRSsNP, 48.94 ±â€¯12.1 nmol/L; control, 54.1 ±â€¯17.1 nmol/L. p < 0.001), and the levels were significantly associated with the preoperative Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 score (p = 0.013), but not with the Lund-Mackay score (p = 0.126). Furthermore, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels were associated with the subjective improvement six months postoperatively (p < 0.001), CONCLUSION: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels are lower in Chinese CRSwNP patients. These 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels are associated with SNOT-22 score. Preoperative 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 level may impact on the symptom improvement after surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the impact of histopathologic parameters on quality of life outcomes in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. SETTING: Hospital of Zhejiang University. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of collected data. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were recruited. Clinical features, CT evaluation, pre and postoperative SNOT-22 scores and histopathologic findings were collected. Tissue eosinophils and mucosal remodeling were analyzed relative to clinical features and outcomes 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Symptom improvement was seen for the entire population. Eosinophilic CRS had significantly worse preoperative and postoperative SNOT-22 scores than non- eosinophilic CRS. Symptom improvement in eosinophilic CRS after surgery was less than that of non-eosinophilic CRS. There was no significant association between preoperative and postoperative SNOT-22 scores and remodeling markers. However, patients with basement membrane thickening showed less reductions of SNOT-22 score postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Presence of mucosal eosinophilia and basal membrane thickening appear to be the main factors adversely affect the symptom control of surgical intervention. Routine histopathology analysis can provide meaningful information for prognostication of surgical outcome.

RESUMO

Targeting posttraumatic inflammation is crucial for improving locomotor function. SIRT1 has been shown to play a critical role in disease processes such as hepatic inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, and acute lung inflammation by regulating inflammation. However, the role of SIRT1 in spinal cord injury (SCI) is unknown. We hypothesized that SIRT1 plays an important role in improving locomotor function after SCI by regulating neuroinflammation. In this study, we investigate the effect of SIRT1 in SCI using pharmacological intervention (SRT1720) and the Mx1-Cre/loxP recombination system to knock out target genes. First, we found that SIRT1 expression at the injured lesion site of wild-type (WT) mice (C57BL/6) decreased 4 h after SCI and lasted for 3 d. Moreover, administration of SRT1720, an agonist of SIRT1, to WT mice significantly improved functional recovery for up to 28 d after injury by reducing the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, the number of M1 macrophages, the number of macrophages/microglia, and the accumulation of perivascular macrophages. In contrast, administration of SRT1720 to SIRT1 knock-out (KO) mice did not improve locomotor recovery or attenuate inflammation. Furthermore, SIRT1 KO mice exhibited worse locomotor recovery, increased levels of inflammatory cytokines, and more M1 macrophages and perivascular macrophages than those of WT mice after SCI. Together, these findings indicate that SRT1720, an SIRT1 agonist, can improve functional recovery by attenuating inflammation after SCI. Therefore, SIRT1 is not only a protective factor but also an anti-inflammatory molecule that exerts beneficial effects on locomotor function after SCI.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Posttraumatic inflammation plays a central role in regulating the pathogenesis of spinal cord injury (SCI). Here, new data show that administration of SRT1720, an SIRT1 agonist, to wild-type (WT) mice significantly improved outcomes after SCI, most likely by reducing the levels of inflammatory cytokines, the number of macrophages/microglia, perivascular macrophages, and M1 macrophages. In contrast, SIRT1 KO mice exhibited worse locomotor recovery than that of WT mice due to aggravated inflammation. Taken together, the results of this study expand upon the previous understanding of the functions and mechanisms of SIRT1 in neuroinflammation following injury to the CNS, suggesting that SIRT1 plays a critical role in regulating neuroinflammation following CNS injury and may be a novel therapeutic target for post-SCI intervention.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Adherence of pathogen to nasal mucosa and colonization is the first step of bacterial biofilm(BBF) formation in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).Terminal sialic acids presenting on cell surface are potential targets for bacterial binding, thus may partly contribute to the pathogenesis of CRS. However, little has been published in this respect, the purpose of our study aimed to investigate the expression of sialic acids on the nasal mucosa in CRS patients and its possible effect on BBF formation. METHODS: Sinus mucosa were harvested from CRS patients undergoing endoscopic surgery. The positive of BBF formation were detected by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and the expression of Neu5Acα2,3Gal(α2,3-linked sialic acid) and Neu5Acα2,6Gal(α2,6-linked sialic acid) on nasal mucosa were determined by fluorescent-immunohistochemical staining (F-IHC) with MAL-II and SNA respectively. A semi-quantitative scoring system was used to assess their different expression between CRS group and the control, as well as BBF positive and negative group. RESULTS: Expression of Neu5Acα2,3Gal and Neu5Acα2,6Gal were both detected in the epithelium and submucosal glands of all 40 CRS patients and 23 controls, they were significantly up-regulated in CRS group(p < 0.05). Among 24 CRS patients, typical BBF formation were identified in 13 cases while the other 11 were regarded as negative, Between the subgroup of BBF(+) and BBF(-), both of Neu5Acα2,3Gal and Neu5Acα2,6Gal had a trend of increasing in BBF(+) group, however, the increased expression of Neu5Acα2,3Gal was statistical significance (4.77 ± 0.90 versus 3.45 ± 1.40; p = 0.0282), whereas the difference of Neu5Acα2,6Gal was insignificant(4.15 ± 1.27 versus 3.55 ± 1.59; p = 0.4281). CONCLUSION: Expression of MAL-II binding (most probable Neu5Acα2,3Gal) and SNA binding (Neu5Acα2,6Gal) were up-regulated in inflamed nasal mucosa, and the increased expression of them may contribute to bacterial biofilm formation which deserved a further investigation.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic treatment for maxillary inverted papilloma (IP) through partial medial maxillectomy with an inferior turbinate reversing approach. A retrospective analysis of patients treated in our institution for maxillary sinus IP between July 2011 and August 2015 was performed. Demographics, operative technique, characteristics of tumors, complications, postoperative follow-up, and recurrence were evaluated. Twenty-two patients were enrolled in the study. All tumor attachments were identified intraoperatively. Adequate visualization was obtained following our approach. All inferior turbinate and nasolacrimal ducts were preserved. The median follow-up time was 41 months. One recurrence occurred at the follow-up time of 27 months. Postoperative hemorrhage and numbness at the ipsilateral frontal teeth were reported in two and one patients, respectively. Endoscopic surgery through partial medial maxillectomy using an inferior turbinate reversing approach provides full access to the maxillary sinus and preserves the inferior turbinate and nasolacrimal duct.
