RESUMO

Cancer survivors including Asian American breast cancer survivors have reported their high needs for help during their survivorship process. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the necessity of technology-based programs to address their needs for help without face-to-face interactions has been highlighted. The purpose of this randomized intervention study was to determine the efficacy of a technology-based program in reducing various types of needs for help among this specific population. This was a randomized clinical trial with repeated measures. A total of 199 participants were included in the data analysis. The recruitment settings included both online and offline communities/groups for Asian Americans. The needs for help were assessed using the Support Care Needs Survey-34 Short Form (SCNS) subscales measuring psychological, information, physical, support, and communication needs. Data analysis was conducted through an intent-to-treat approach. In the mixed effect models, psychological needs, information needs, physical needs, and communication needs decreased over time (P < .001). However, there were no significant group * time effects. Social support significantly mediated the effects of a technology-based intervention on psychological, information, and support needs at the pre-test and the post-1 month. This study supported significant decreases in the needs for help of Asian American breast cancer survivors by a technology-based intervention. Further studies are needed with other racial/ethnic groups of cancer survivors to confirm the efficacy of a technology-based intervention in reducing cancer survivors' needs for help during their survivorship process.

PURPOSE: To describe clinical manifestations and short-term prognosis of ocular motility disorders following coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. METHODS: Ocular motility disorders were diagnosed by clinical assessment, high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging, and laboratory testing. Clinical manifestations, short-term prognosis, and rate of complete recovery were analyzed. RESULTS: Sixty-three patients (37 males, 26 females) with a mean age of 61.6 ± 13.3 years (range, 22-81 years) were included in this study. Among 61 applicable patients with sufficient information regarding medical histories, 38 (62.3%) had one or more significant underlying past medical histories including vasculopathic risk factors. The interval between initial symptoms and vaccination was 8.6 ± 8.2 (range, 0-28) days. Forty-two (66.7%), 14 (22.2%), and 7 (11.1%) patients developed symptoms after the first, second, and third vaccinations, respectively. One case of internuclear ophthalmoplegia, 52 cases of cranial nerve palsy, two cases of myasthenia gravis, six cases of orbital diseases (such as myositis, thyroid eye disease, and IgG-related orbital myopathy), and two cases of comitant vertical strabismus with acute onset diplopia were found. Among 42 patients with follow-up data (duration: 62.1 ± 40.3 days), complete improvement, partial improvement, no improvement, and exacerbation were shown in 20, 15, 3, and 4 patients, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study provided various clinical features of ocular motility disorders following COVID-19 vaccination. The majority of cases had a mild clinical course while some cases showed a progressive nature. Close follow-up and further studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and long-term prognosis.

BACKGROUND: A clinical decision support system (CDSS) is recognized as a technology that enhances clinical efficacy and safety. However, its full potential has not been realized, mainly due to clinical data standards and noninteroperable platforms. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we introduce the common data model-based intelligent algorithm network environment (CANE) platform that supports the implementation and deployment of a CDSS. METHODS: CDSS reasoning engines, usually represented as R or Python objects, are deployed into the CANE platform and converted into C# objects. When a clinician requests CANE-based decision support in the electronic health record (EHR) system, patients' information is transformed into Health Level 7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) format and transmitted to the CANE server inside the hospital firewall. Upon receiving the necessary data, the CANE system's modules perform the following tasks: (1) the preprocessing module converts the FHIRs into the input data required by the specific reasoning engine, (2) the reasoning engine module operates the target algorithms, (3) the integration module communicates with the other institutions' CANE systems to request and transmit a summary report to aid in decision support, and (4) creates a user interface by integrating the summary report and the results calculated by the reasoning engine. RESULTS: We developed a CANE system such that any algorithm implemented in the system can be directly called through the RESTful application programming interface when it is integrated with an EHR system. Eight algorithms were developed and deployed in the CANE system. Using a knowledge-based algorithm, physicians can screen patients who are prone to sepsis and obtain treatment guides for patients with sepsis with the CANE system. Further, using a nonknowledge-based algorithm, the CANE system supports emergency physicians' clinical decisions about optimum resource allocation by predicting a patient's acuity and prognosis during triage. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully developed a common data model-based platform that adheres to medical informatics standards and could aid artificial intelligence model deployment using R or Python.

This study aimed to understand school nurses' perceptions regarding barriers to and facilitators for health care services for children with chronic diseases in school settings. Using the PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, and Web of Science databases, a mixed studies review was conducted for literature published between January 2011 and June 2020. We performed a mixed-methods systematic review using a convergent integrated approach. A quality appraisal of the included studies was conducted using a mixed-methods appraisal tool. Twenty-seven articles (10 qualitative, 10 quantitative, and seven mixed-methods) that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Integrated findings that emerged from data synthesis were categorized into four levels (intrapersonal level, interpersonal level, institutional level, and community and public policy level) based on a socio-ecological model framework. This mixed systematic review provides a comprehensive understanding of school nurses' perceived barriers and facilitators when providing school health care for students with chronic diseases and how these barriers and facilitators interact across multiple systems. Further policies and strategies should be developed to provide effective school health services considering this study's findings.

BACKGROUND: The existence of differentiated thyroid cells is critical to respond radioactive iodide treatment strategy in thyroid cancer, and loss of the differentiated phenotype is a trademark of iodide-refractive thyroid disease. While high-dose therapy has been beneficial to several cancer patients, many studies have indicated this clinical benefit was limited to patients having BRAF mutation. BRAF-targeted paired box gene-8 (PAX8), a thyroid-specific transcription factor, generally dysregulated in BRAF-mutated thyroid cancer. METHODS: In this study, thyroid iodine-metabolizing gene levels were detected in BRAF-transformed thyroid cells after low and high dose of ionizing radiation. Also, an mRNA-targeted approach was used to figure out the underlying mechanism of low (0.01Gyx10 or 0.1Gy) and high (2Gy) radiation function on thyroid cancer cells after BRAFV600E mutation. RESULTS: Low dose radiation (LDR)-induced PAX8 upregulation restores not only BRAF-suppressive sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) expression, one of the major protein necessary for iodine uptake in healthy thyroid, on plasma membrane but also regulate other thyroid metabolizing genes levels. Importantly, LDR-induced PAX8 results in decreased cellular transformation in BRAF-mutated thyroid cells. CONCLUSION: The present findings provide evidence that LDR-induced PAX8 acts as an important regulator for suppression of thyroid carcinogenesis through novel STAT3/miR-330-5p pathway in thyroid cancers.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the early postoperative changes of the angle of deviation after surgery for intermittent exotropia. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 114 patients who had been surgically treated for intermittent exotropia and followed-up on postoperatively for 1 month or more. Patients were observed at postoperative 6 h, 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month. The main outcome measure was the change of the angle of deviation during the early postoperative period (from 6 h to 1 day postoperatively). RESULTS: The mean preoperative angle of exodeviation was 26.3 ± 7.6 PD at distance and 25.4 ± 10.3 PD at near. The angle of deviation was -3.3 (esodeviation) ± 7.0 PD at distance and -0.7 ± 7.1 PD at near at postoperative 6 h, and -3.7 ± 6.9 PD and -0.8 ± 6.8 PD at postoperative 1 day. Neither of these sets represented a significant change from 6 h to 1 day postoperatively (p = 0.300 at distance, p = 0.945 at near). However, in 25 patients (21.9%) the angle of deviation changed 5 PD or more from 6 h to 1 day. Among them, ten showed exodrift and 15 esodrift. At postoperative 1 month, the deviations became significantly more exotropic compared with postoperative 1 day (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The mean angle of deviation showed no significant change from 6 h to 1 day postoperatively, but 21.9% of patients showed a change of 5 PD or more in this period. These results should be considered in determining the time and the target angle of adjustment in adjustable strabismus surgery for exotropia.

[Purpose] Although the Push-Up Plus is a useful exercise method for shoulder stabilization, few studies have examined its effects at different angles of shoulder rotation. Therefore, the present study investigated the most effective exercise method for shoulder stabilization by analyzing muscle activities of the rotator cuff muscles at different angles of shoulder rotation. [Subjects] Fifteen healthy university students in their 20s were the subjects of this study. [Methods] Changes in muscle EMG related to shoulder stabilization were analyzed by performing the Push-Up Plus in shoulder positions of neutral, internal and external rotation. [Results] The highest muscle activity was found in external rotation, and in internal rotation the pectoralis major and levator scapula showed significantly lower activities than the other positions. [Conclusion] Selectively changing the rotation angle of the shoulder for different purposes of the shoulder exercise would be an effective exercise method.

The characteristics of an individual patient experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest who recovered spontaneous circulation with the assistance of witnesses and paramedics were examined. The analysis of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the professional first aid efforts of paramedics in the pre-hospital environment is pivotal to enhancing the survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. The data used in this study were extracted from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) nationally recognized statistics, Acute Heart Failure big data survey. Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) customer data were collected from the Gangwon Fire Headquarters public information database as social management data. The data were analyzed using SPSS 24. The study's results emphasized the significance of offering basic CPR training to the public. This is evident from the fact that 90.5% of the first witnesses in the study performed CPR on OHCA patients, resulting in the recovery of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). The majority of patients with ROSC were male, with the highest age group being 41-50 years. Heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes were common medical conditions. The rate of witnessing cardiac arrest was high. Among the first witnesses, about 78.4% were of cardiac arrest incidents involving family members, co-workers, or acquaintances; 12.2% were on-duty medical healthcare personnel; and 9.5% were off-duty healthcare personnel. Cardiac arrest was treated in 83.8% of cases, with 90% of witnesses performing CPR. The percentage of witnesses that used an automated external defibrillator (AED) was 13.5%. In this study, the rates of ECG monitoring, CPR performance, and defibrillation performed by paramedics were high, but intravascular access and drug administration had a lower rate of performance. The time elapsed depended on the patient's physical fitness. The study found that paramedics had the highest CPC restoration rate in patients with cardiac arrest, followed by EMTs and nurses. Significant differences were observed in cerebral performance scores after care by these paramedics and nurses. To increase the performance of AEDs, more AEDs should be installed in public spaces so that the public can access them conveniently in cases of emergency. In addition, it is necessary to improve the quality of professional first aid physical activity services performed by first-class paramedics.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ocular adverse event (OAE) and the incidence rate that can occur after the COVID-19 vaccination. METHODS: Patients who visited with an ophthalmologic diagnosis within a month of COVID-19 vaccination were retrospectively analyzed. OAEs were categorized as ischemia and inflammation by their presumed pathogenesis and were compared by types of vaccine: messenger RNA (mRNA) and viral vector vaccine. The crude incidence rate was calculated using data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients with OAEs after COVID-19 vaccination were reviewed: 10 patients after mRNA and 14 after viral vector vaccine. Retinal vein occlusion (nine patients) and paralytic strabismus (four patients) were the leading diagnoses. Ischemic OAE was likely to occur after viral vector vaccines, while inflammatory OAE was closely related to mRNA vaccine (p = 0.017). The overall incidence rate of OAE was 5.8 cases per million doses: 11.5 per million doses in viral vector vaccine and 3.4 per million doses in mRNA vaccine. CONCLUSIONS: OAEs can be observed shortly after the COVID-19 vaccination, and their category was different based on the types of vaccine. The information and incidence of OAE based on the type of vaccine can help monitor patients who were administered the COVID-19 vaccine.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Bariatric intervention has been reported to be an effective way to improve metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in obese individuals. The current systemic review aimed to assess the changes in MRI-determined hepatic proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease activity score (NAS) after bariatric surgery or intragastric balloon/gastric banding in MASLD patients with obesity. METHODS: We searched various databases including PubMed, OVID Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library. Primary outcomes were the changes in intrahepatic fat on MRI-PDFF and histologic features of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). RESULTS: Thirty studies with a total of 3,134 patients were selected for meta-analysis. Bariatric intervention significantly reduced BMI (ratio of means, 0.79) and showed 72% reduction of intrahepatic fat on MRI-PDFF at 6 months after bariatric intervention (ratio of means, 0.28). Eight studies revealed that NAS was reduced by 60% at 3-6 months compared to baseline, 40% at 12-24 months, and 50% at 36-60 months. Nineteen studies revealed that the proportion of patients with steatosis decreased by 44% at 3-6 months, 37% at 12-24 months, and 29% at 36-60 months; lobular inflammation by 36% at 12-24 months and 51% at 36-60 months; ballooning degeneration by 38% at 12-24 months; significant fibrosis (≥F2) by 18% at 12-24 months and by 17% at 36-60 months after intervention. CONCLUSION: Bariatric intervention significantly improved MRI-PDFF and histologic features of MASH in patients with obesity. Bariatric intervention might be the effective alternative treatment option for patients with MASLD who do not respond to lifestyle modification or medical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Choosing treatments for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with osimertinib resistance is challenging. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of SNK01 (autologous natural killer (NK) cells) in combination with cytotoxic chemotherapy and/or cetuximab (an anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody) in treating EGFR-mutated NSCLC in this non-clinical and phase I/IIa clinical trial. METHODS: We developed a cell line-derived xenograft-humanized mouse model with an osimertinib-resistant lung cancer cell line. The mice were divided into four groups based on treatment (no treatment, cetuximab, SNK01, and combination groups) and treated weekly for 5 weeks. In the clinical study, 12 patients with EGFR-mutated NSCLC who failed prior tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) received SNK01 weekly in combination with gemcitabine/carboplatin (n=6) or cetuximab/gemcitabine/carboplatin (n=6) and dose escalation of SNK01 following the "3+3" design. RESULTS: In the non-clinical study, an increase in NK cells in the blood and enhanced NK cell tumor infiltration were observed in the SNK01 group. The volume of tumor extracted after treatment was the smallest in the combination group. In the clinical study, 12 patients (median age, 60.9 years; all adenocarcinoma cases) received SNK01 weekly for 7-8 weeks (4×109 cells/dose (n=6); 6×109 cells/dose (n=6)). The maximum feasible dose of SNK01 was 6×109 cells/dose without dose-limiting toxicity. Efficacy outcomes showed an objective response rate of 25%, disease control rate of 100%, and median progression-free survival of 143 days. CONCLUSION: SNK01 in combination with cytotoxic chemotherapy, including cetuximab, for EGFR-mutated NSCLC with TKI resistance was safe and exerted a potential antitumor effect. PURPOSE: This study aimed to derive a conceptual definition and attributes for nursing students' rights in clinical practice in South Korea. METHODS: This concept-analysis study was conducted at a nursing school in South Korea. The participants were recruited using purposive sampling. The inclusion criteria were being a fourth-year nursing student and having two or more semesters of practical experience. The hybrid model used in this study had three stages. First, 12 studies were reviewed during the theoretical stage. Second, 10 in-depth interviews were conducted during the fieldwork stage. Third, in the analytical stage, the concept of nursing students' rights related to clinical practice was defined and the attributes were derived. RESULTS: The analysis established five attributes of nursing students' rights: the right to learn, the right to be protected from infections and accidents, the right to be cared for and supported, the right to be respected, and the right to be recognized as a member of a nursing team. A key theme that emerged from this study was having the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to develop a measurement tool based on the above five attributes and to verify its effectiveness.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the mediating effects of communication skills and pediatric nurse-parent partnership on the relationship between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction among pediatric nurses. METHODS: A survey was administered to 205 pediatric nurses working in children's, general, and tertiary hospitals situated in Chungcheong province and Seoul. Data were collected in August and September 2022. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics version 26.0 along with the PROCESS macro program. RESULTS: Emotional intelligence had a significant effect, and was a critical factor affecting the job satisfaction of pediatric nurses. Furthermore, communication skills and nurse-parent partnership had a serial double mediating effect. CONCLUSION: These findings underscore the significance of conducting job satisfaction improvement programs, including strategies for augmenting emotional intelligence, bolstering communication skills, and fostering nurse-parent partnership.

BACKGROUND: The absence of primary care providers' participation in school health care may require close collaboration between school health teachers and parents. This study explores maternal perspectives on obstacles and improvements in partnerships with school health teachers of children with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Participants were recruited using purposive sampling through an online type 1 diabetes self-help group in South Korea. Twenty-two mothers whose children were aged between 7 and 13 and had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at least 1 year ago were included. Individual interviews were conducted based on a semi-structured interview guide from February to June 2019. Qualitative data were analyzed using inductive content analysis comprising open coding, coding sheets, grouping, categorization, and abstraction. RESULTS: Mothers recognized obstacles in eight categories and improvements in nine categories under institutional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal aspects of the partnership with school health teachers. Respondents recognized insufficient legal coverage and guidelines, and also health teacher shortage and workload as obstacles in the institutional dimension. Mothers perceived building trust, compromising to balance responsibilities, and constant and open communication as improvements in the interpersonal dimension. They recognized practical competency and tailored care for ordinary school life as school health teacher-related improvements. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that school health teachers should compromise to balance responsibilities to improve partnerships with parents in the school health care setting. Institutional improvements, such as establishing robust laws and clear guidelines and increasing the number of school health teachers, should be prioritized.

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to determine the clusters of midlife women by gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and to explore differences in the clusters by race/ethnicity. This analysis used the data from two internet-based studies among 1,054 midlife women. The analysis was conducted with the data on background characteristics, health and menopausal status, and GI symptoms (collected using the GI Symptom Index for Midlife Women). The data were analyzed using factor analyses, hierarchical cluster analyses, chi-square tests, multinomial logistic regression analyses, and analyses of covariance. Three clusters were adopted: Cluster 1 (with low total numbers and severity scores of symptoms; 46.0%), Cluster 2 (with moderate total numbers and severity scores of symptoms; 44.0%), and Cluster 3 (with high total numbers and severity scores of symptoms; 10.0%). Only in Cluster 2, there were significant racial/ethnic differences in individual GI symptoms. These results provide directions for future GI symptom management among midlife women.

The Korean Intermittent Exotropia Multicenter Study (KIEMS) was a retrospective, cross-sectional and multicenter study for the investigation of intermittent exotropia involved 65 strabismus specialists from 53 institutions in Korea. Purpose of this study was to present ophthalmologic findings of intermittent exotropia from the KIEMS. Consecutive patients with intermittent exotropia of ≥ 8 prism diopters (PD) at distance or near fixation were included. Best-corrected visual acuity, cycloplegic refraction data, angles of deviation at several cardinal positions, ocular dominance, fusion control, oblique muscle function, and binocular sensory outcomes were collected. A total of 5385 participants (2793 females; age 8.2 years) were included. Non-dominant eye was more myopic than the dominant eye (- 0.60 vs. - 0.47 diopters, P < 0.001). Mean exodeviation angles were 23.5 PD at distance and 25.0 PD at near fixation. Basic type (86.2%) was the most, followed by convergence insufficiency (9.4%) and divergence excess (4.4%) types. Alternating ocular dominance and good fusion control were more common at near than at distance fixation. Good stereopsis at 40 cm was observed in 49.3% in Titmus stereo test (≤ 60 arcsec) and in 71.0% in Randot stereo test (≤ 63 arcsec). Intermittent exotropia was mostly diagnosed in childhood and patients with the condition showed relatively good binocular functions. This study may provide objective findings of intermittent exotropia in a most reliable way, given that the study included a large study population and investigated comprehensive ophthalmology examinations.

PURPOSE: This study aims to suggest the number of test items in each of 8 nursing activity categories of the Korean Nursing Licensing Examination, which comprises 134 activity statements including 275 items. The examination will be able to evaluate the minimum ability that nursing graduates must have to perform their duties. METHODS: Two opinion surveys involving the members of 7 academic societies were conducted from March 19 to May 14, 2021. The survey results were reviewed by members of 4 expert associations from May 21 to June 4, 2021. The results for revised numbers of items in each category were compared with those reported by Tak and his colleagues and the National Council License Examination for Registered Nurses of the United States. RESULTS: Based on 2 opinion surveys and previous studies, the suggestions for item allocation to 8 nursing activity categories of the Korean Nursing Licensing Examination in this study are as follows: 50 items for management of care and improvement of professionalism, 33 items for safety and infection control, 40 items for management of potential risk, 28 items for basic care, 47 items for physiological integrity and maintenance, 33 items for pharmacological and parenteral therapies, 24 items for psychosocial integrity and maintenance, and 20 items for health promotion and maintenance. Twenty other items related to health and medical laws were not included due to their mandatory status. CONCLUSION: These suggestions for the number of test items for each activity category will be helpful in developing new items for the Korean Nursing Licensing Examination.

A culturally tailored virtual program could meet the survivorship needs of Asian American women breast cancer survivors (AABC). This study aims to determine the efficacy of a culturally tailored virtual information and coaching/support program (TICAA) in improving AABC's survivorship experience. A randomized clinical trial (NCT02803593) was conducted from January 2017 to June 2020 among 199 AABC. The intervention group utilized TICAA and the American Cancer Society [ACS] website while the control group used only ACS website for 12 weeks. The outcomes were measured using the SCNS-34SF (needs; primary), the MSAS-SF (symptoms; secondary), and the FACT-B (quality of life; secondary). The data were analyzed using an intent-to-treat approach. The intervention group showed significant reductions in their needs from the baseline (T0) to post 4 weeks (T1) and to post 12 weeks (T2). Although the changes were not statistically significant, the intervention group had decreased symptoms from T0 to T2 while the control group had an increase in their symptoms. The intervention group had a significant increase in their quality of life from T0 to T2. A culturally tailored virtual program could therefore improve quality of life in AABC patients. Colonoscopic polypectomy is effective in decreasing the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC). Premalignant polyps discovered during colonoscopy are associated with the risk of metachronous advanced neoplasia. Postpolypectomy surveillance is the most important method for managing advanced metachronous neoplasia. A more efficient and evidence-based guideline for postpolypectomy surveillance is required because of the limited medical resources and concerns regarding colonoscopy complications. In these consensus guidelines, an analytic approach was used to address all reliable evidence to interpret the predictors of CRC or advanced neoplasia during surveillance colonoscopy. The key recommendations state that the high-risk findings for metachronous CRC following polypectomy are as follows: adenoma ≥10 mm in size; 3 to 5 (or more) adenomas; tubulovillous or villous adenoma; adenoma containing high-grade dysplasia; traditional serrated adenoma; sessile serrated lesion containing any grade of dysplasia; serrated polyp of at least 10 mm in size; and 3 to 5 (or more) sessile serrated lesions. More studies are needed to fully comprehend the patients who are most likely to benefit from surveillance colonoscopy and the ideal surveillance interval to prevent metachronous CRC.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to confirm the effect of transplantation of human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs) on hearing restoration in a sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) animal model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: UCB was collected from pregnant women after obtaining consent, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were extracted. We established an SNHL model and transplanted UCB-MSCs through the brachial vein of the guinea pigs. The animals were divided into 4 groups: animals with normal hearing, animals with SNHL, animals with SNHL and injected with saline, and animals with SNHL and transplanted with UCB-MSCs. Hearing tests were conducted at 1, 3, and 5 weeks, and the results were compared by grading auditory brainstem response (ABR) recordings and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) for each treatment. Lastly, cochlear pathological features were examined, and surface preparations and morphological changes in each animal model were compared using hematoxylin and eosin staining and light microscopy studies. RESULTS: In SNHL group, decreased DPOAEs and increased ABR threshold were noted. Furthermore, in the SNHL group, ABR hearing thresholds were unconverted and were similar to those observed in deafness. The transplanted UCB-MSC group showed a significant improvement in hearing threshold (40 dB) compared to that in all the SNHL group (80-90 dB). Examination of the SNHL animals' cochlear morphological features demonstrated a noticeable lack of spiral ganglion cells and also showed degenerated outer hair cells. However, the transplanted UCB-MSCs showed an increase in spiral ganglion and hair cells. CONCLUSION: Intravenous transplantation of UCB-MSCs can enhance hearing thresholds, outer-hair cells and increase the number of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs).
