RESUMO

The lichen Usnea articulata collected from an unpolluted area was exposed for 6 months at 26 sites for the sample chosenusing a stratified random design, and the content of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sn, V, and Zn, was assessed using ICP-MS. The health risk for both adults and children was then calculated using the PTEs concentrations. The results showed that despite the hostile urban conditions, transplanted lichens depicted clear deposition patterns of airborne PTEs, mostly associated with industrial sites, where As and other elements showed remarkably high values. The cumulative hazard index was below the risk threshold, both for adults and children. For the entire population (particularly children) residing in areas surrounding industrial sites, As and Cr appeared to be potentially carcinogenic elements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is one of the life-threatening complications of pregnancy, the prevalence of which has increased in parallel with the caesarean section rate. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of mothers with PAS who have also experienced maternal near miss. METHODS: The participants of this study included 8 mothers who had experienced near miss due to placenta accreta during the past year, as well as two husbands and two health care professionals. Data collection was done using face-to-face, in-depth virtual and in-person interviews. In this qualitative study, the interpretive phenomenological analysis approach was used to analyse the data. RESULTS: The superordinate theme that emerged from the lived experiences of the studied mothers is 'Living in a vacuum', which was derived from 3 main themes. The theme of 'distorted identity' is related to the mothers' experience of losing the uterus as a symbol of femininity and nostalgia for the former self. The theme of 'exacerbated exhaustion' indicates the burnout and fatigue perceived by these mothers and has dimensions far beyond the exhaustion caused by performing parenting duties. The third theme, 'a threatened future', reflects these mothers' vague image of the future in terms of health, preservation of life, and the continuation of living together with the husband. CONCLUSIONS: It seems that mothers with PAS need to be covered by integrated and well-organised psycho-social support from the time they are diagnosed with the complication until long after delivery due to the high potentiality of maternal near miss.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Asthma and allergic complications are the most common chronic disorders in children and adolescents. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema among schoolchildren, and some related risk factors. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was performed in 2019 and involved 4000 students aged 6-7 years and 4000 students aged 13-14 years (both girls and boys) from urban schools in Khuzestan Province, southwestern Iran. We used the multi-stage sampling method. Data were collected using the Persian version of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire. RESULTS: The prevalence of current wheeze, wheeze ever and asthma ever in the age group of 6-7 years was 3.8, 4.5, and 1.8%, respectively; in the age group of 13-14 years, it was 4.4, 5.9, and 3.4, respectively. In terms of gender, males (4.9, 6.0, and 2.7 percent, respectively) had substantially higher rates of current wheeze, wheeze ever, and asthma ever compared to the girls (2.8, 3.6, and 2.0 percent, respectively) (p < 0.001). The prevalence of rhinitis, Hay fever, and eczema among young people was 5.3%, 3.5%, and 1.0%, respectively. Current wheeze was more common in children with allergic rhinitis in the last 12 months (30.3% vs. 2.7%, p < 0.001), Hay fever (32.8% vs. 0.3%, p < 0.001) and eczema (27.8% vs 3.8%, p < 0.001), compared to children who did not. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence and severity of asthma symptoms were significantly associated with allergic rhinitis, eczema, and gender.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Climate change may jeopardize the health of mothers and their offspring. There are few studies on the association between increasing temperature and pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and adverse pregnancy outcomes including stillbirth, low birth weight (LBW), preterm labor (PTL), spontaneous abortion (SA), preeclampsia and hypertension in Ahvaz, Iran. METHODS: Distributed Lag Non-linear Models (DLNM) combined with quasi-Poisson regression were used to research the effect of UTCI on adverse pregnancy outcomes. The effect of time trend, air pollutants (NO2, SO2 and PM10), and weekdays were adjusted. RESULTS: The results showed that the low values of UTCI index (11.6 °C, in lags 0-6, 0-13) caused significant increase in the risk of preterm labor. However, hot thermal stress (high UTCI) significantly increased the risk of stillbirth in lag 0-13. We did not observe any significant relation between UTCI and other pregnancy outcomes in this study. CONCLUSIONS: It seems like both hot and cold weathers can be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Scientists have found that climate change has adverse effects on human health. Because pregnant women are one of the most vulnerable groups, these negative impacts may affect their fetuses, which make up the next generation. In this study, we examined the effect of temperature on some pregnancy outcomes, including low birth weight, preterm labor, spontaneous abortion, preeclampsia and gestational hypertension in Ahvaz city, which is one of the hottest cities in the world. One way to assess temperature impact on humans is by using temperature indicators. In this study we used the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) for this purpose. The data at different time intervals were collected and evaluated with specific models. Our results showed that low values of UTCI, which is equivalent to cold weather, significantly increase the risk of preterm labor. But, high levels of UTCI, which means hot weather, significantly increase the risk of stillbirth. In conclusion; both hot and cold weather can be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes in Ahvaz city. Therefore, pregnant women should protect themselves from exposure to hot and cold weather.

RESUMO

We aimed to investigate the relation between air pollution and the number of daily hospitalizations due to pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis in children aged 0-18 in Bursa city of Turkey, between the years 2013-2018. The daily values of air pollutants (PM10, SO2, NO2, NOx, CO, and O3) from 2013 until 2018, were obtained. Adjusted Quasi-Poisson regression models including distributed lags, controlled for climate variables were used for data analysis. Increases in SO2, ozone, PMs, and nitrogen oxides were associated with pneumonia hospitalizations, increases in SO2 NOx and PMs were associated with asthma hospitalizations, and increases in SO2 and ozone were associated with bronchitis hospitalizations. Male hospitalization was related with SO2, ozone, and NOx; while female hospitalization was only related with SO2. This study showed that short-term exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia, asthma, and bronchitis hospitalization among children in Bursa.

RESUMO

Differentiation between exudative and transudative pleural effusion is sometime problematic. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of C-reactive protein (CRP) in differentiation of exudative and transudative pleural effusion. This is an analytical epidemiologic cross-sectional study that evaluates the role of CRP in differentiating transudative and exudative pleural effusion. Patients were divided into two groups of exudates and transudates, based on Light's criteria. The pleural effusion CRP levels were compared between the two groups. SPSS software version 16 was used for statistical analysis. The significance level was considered p<0.05. A total of 169 patients with pleural effusion enrolled in the study. Based on Light's criteria, 108 patients (63.9%) had exudative pleural effusion and 61 (36.1%) had transudative pleural effusion. The level of CRP in the pleural fluid of patients in the exudative and transudative groups was 13.3±37.1 and 3.5±4.3mg/dl, respectively (p=0.008). The 3.31 mg/dl cut-off point of CRP level of pleural effusion had the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of 96.3%, 72.1%, 86% and 91.7% respectively.  The results obtained in our study shows that the level of CRP in the effusion fluid can be helpful in differentiating exudative from transudative pleural effusions.

RESUMO

Climate change may be associated with human morbidity and mortality through direct and indirect effects. Ahvaz is one of the hottest cities in the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) and non-accidental, cardiovascular and respiratory disease mortality in Ahvaz, Iran. Distributed Lag Non-linear Models (DLNM) combined with quasi-Poisson regression were used to investigate the effect of PET on death. The effect of time trend, air pollutants (NO2, SO2 and PM10), and weekdays were adjusted. The results showed that in cold stress [1st percentile of PET (2.7 °C) relative to 25th percentile (11.9 °C)] the risk of total respiratory mortality, respiratory mortality in men, and mortality in people under 65 year olds, significantly decreased in the cumulative lags of 0-2, 0-6 and 0-13; but the risk of respiratory mortality increased in the elderly and in the final lags. In contrast, heat stress [99th percentile of PET (44.9 °C) relative to 75th percentile (43.4 °C)] significantly increased the risk of total cardiovascular mortality (CVD), cardiovascular mortality in men, ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease mortality in lags 0 and 0-2. It seems that high PET values increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality, while low PET values increase respiratory mortality only among the elderly in Ahvaz.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of infrastructures to record, collect and report COVID-19 data has become a fundamental necessity in the world. The disease registry system can help build an infrastructure to collect data systematically. The study aimed to design a minimum data set for the COVID-19 registry system. METHODS: A qualitative study to design an MDS for the COVID-19 registry system was performed in five phases at Ahvaz University of Medical Sciences in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, 2020-2021. In the first phase, assessing the information requirements was performed for the COVID-19 registry system. Data elements were identified in the second phase. In the third phase, the MDS was selected, and in the four phases, the COVID-19 registry system was implemented as a pilot study to test the MDS. Finally, based on the experiences gained from the COVID-19 registry system implementation, the MDS were evaluated, and corrections were made. RESULTS: MDS of the COVID-19 registry system contains eight top groups including administrative (34 data elements), disease exposure (61 data elements), medical history and physical examination (138 data elements), findings of clinical diagnostic tests (101 data elements), disease progress and outcome of treatment (55 data elements), medical diagnosis and cause of death (12 data elements), follow-up (14 data elements), and COVID-19 vaccination (19 data elements) data, respectively. CONCLUSION: Creating a standard and comprehensive MDS can help to design any national data dictionary for COVID-19 and improve the quality of COVID-19 data.

METHODS: Distributed Lag Non-linear Models (DLNM) combined with quasi-Poisson regression were used to investigate the effect of PET on adverse pregnancy outcomes. In this study the effect of time trend, air pollutants (NO2, SO2 and PM10), and weekdays were adjusted. RESULTS: High PET (45.4 C°, lag = 0) caused a significant increase in risk of stillbirth. Also, high levels of PET (45.4, 43.6, 42.5 C°, lag = 0-6) and low levels of PET (9.9, 16.9 C°, lags = 0, 0-13, 0-21) significantly increased the risk of LBW. But, low levels of PET (6.4, 9.9, 16.9 C°, lags = 0-6, 0-13) reduced the risk of gestational hypertension. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that hot and cold thermal stress may be associated with increased risk of stillbirth, and LBW in Ahvaz.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: There is some evidence about the short-term effects of air pollutants on adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the association between air pollutants and spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and macrosomia in Ahvaz, which is one of the most polluted cities in the Middle East. METHODS: Data on adverse pregnancy outcomes and air pollutants including ozone (O3), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), particles with a diameter of less than 10 µm (PM10) and particles with a diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) were inquired from the Health Department of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences and the Environmental Protection Agency of Khuzestan Province for the years 2008-2018. A time series analysis using the generalized additive model (GAM) with up to 6-day lags was used. RESULTS: The results showed that the SO2 pollutant on 0, 1, 3, 4, and 6-day lags and PM10 on lag 0 had direct and significant associations with spontaneous abortion. NO, NO2 and CO on 0-6-day lags, and O3 on 6-day lags showed direct and significant associations with preeclampsia. NO and NO2 pollutants showed significant and direct associations with gestational diabetes, during 0- and 6-day lags. NO on 0-, 3- and 4-day lags, CO in all 0-6-day lags and PM2.5 on 1-, 3-, 5-, and 6-day lags showed direct and significant associations with macrosomia. None of the pollutants showed significant associations with stillbirth or gestational hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that some air pollutants are associated with spontaneous abortion, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and macrosomia. This study further emphasizes the need to control ambient air pollution.

RESUMO

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease. The beneficial effects of pomegranate have been shown on insulin resistance and obesity, which are linked to NAFLD pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of pomegranate extract in patients with NAFLD. Forty-four NAFLD patients were randomly assigned to receive two pomegranate extract tablets or placebo for 12 weeks. Anthropometric measurements, serum lipids, glycemic indicators, and blood pressure were assessed at baseline and the end of the study. Pomegranate was associated with a reduction in the total cholesterol (p Ë‚ .001), triglyceride (p Ë‚ .001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (p Ë‚ .003), fasting blood sugar (p Ë‚ .001), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (p = .02), diastolic blood pressure (p = .04), weight (p Ë‚ .001), body mass index (p Ë‚ .001), and waist circumference (p = .002), as compared to placebo. A significant increase was observed in serum HDL-C (p Ë‚ .001) after intervention with the pomegranate extract. However, no significant difference was shown between the two groups in serum insulin and LDL-C. The pomegranate extract supplement could be used as a complementary therapy along with existing therapies to improve glycemic indicators, serum lipids, anthropometric indices, and blood pressure in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver.

RESUMO

There are several pieces of evidence regarding the role of bacteria, such as Streptococcus bovis/gallolyticus in the etiology of gastrointestinal diseases such as colorectal cancer (CRC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therefore, the aim of this study was to detect S. gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (Sgg) in fecal samples of CRC and IBD patients by culture and molecular methods, in Ahvaz, southwest of Iran. A total of 106 fecal samples were collected from 22 CRC patients, 44 IBD patients, and 40 healthy individuals. The prevalence of Sgg was investigated by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with specific primers for sodA gene. The results of the stool culture showed that the overall prevalence of Sgg was 9 (13.6%) out of 66 patients. Meanwhile, the number of Sgg isolated from IBD and CRC patients was 7 (15.9%) and 2 (9%), respectively. The bacteria were not isolated from any of the control groups. On the basis of PCR, S. gallolyticus was detected in 24 (36.4%) out of 66 patients. Meanwhile, the number of IBD patients with positive sodA gene was 15 (34.1%) out of 44 cases. In CRC patients, the sodA gene was detected in 9 (40.9%) of 22 cases. Two (5%) of the specimens in the control group had the sodA gene. According to our results, S. gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus might be involved in CRC and IBD pathogenesis. More investigation with different samples in the various areas might be shaded light on these results.

RESUMO

The present study was carried out with the aim of determining the effect of spiritual self-care training on the quality of life of mothers of preterm infants. This trial was carried out on 60 mothers with premature infants. Mothers were randomly divided into two intervention and control groups. Training for increasing awareness about the condition of the infants was carried out in both groups. In the intervention group, spiritual self-care training was also done. Data were completed in both groups before, immediately after, and two weeks after the intervention by using the standard WHO quality of life questionnaire. Data were analysed using statistical tests, including ANOVA and Repeated Measures. The results showed that the average quality of life of mothers under study was significantly different at different points of measurement in the intervention group (first, second, and third time-points) (P = 0.016). An increase was observed in the intervention group at the second time-point compared to the first time-point (84.2-88.4, P < 0.001) and in the third time-point compared to the first time-point, (87.9), which was also statistically significant (P < 0.001). According to the results of post hoc tests, there was a decrease in quality of life in the control group at the second time-point compared to the first time-point and the average score of mothers decreased from 82.9 to 75.3, which was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Spiritual self-care training can increase the quality of life and can be used as a form of holistic nursing care for mothers with premature infants in neonatal intensive care units.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Health information on the dimensions of asthma and allergic conditions in Khuzestan Province, as a major industrial and polluted area in Iran as and the Middle East, is inadequate. This study was performed to measure the prevalence of asthma and other allergic conditions in adults in Khuzestan Province. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study was carried out in 17 villages and 27 cities of Khuzestan Province during the years 2017-2018 on 20 to 65 year old respondents. Two-stage cluster sampling was used. The ECRHS (European Community Respiratory Health Survey) questionnaire was completed for individuals with additional questions regarding other allergic conditions. RESULTS: In the study, 5720 questionnaires were distributed of which 5708 were returned. The prevalence of current asthma was 8.5% and that of asthma-like symptoms was 19.0%. The most common symptoms of asthma were nocturnal cough (13.6%), chest tightness (12.3%) and wheezing (13.1%). The prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR), eczema and airway hyperresponsiveness were 27.2, 10.7, and 38.7%, respectively. The prevalence of current asthma was strongly correlated with age, current location (city, village), and the smoking status of respondents (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of current asthma and asthma-like symptoms in Khuzestan Province is almost twice as high as in Iran. Given the high prevalence of symptoms of airway hyperresponsiveness in the entire province, it is necessary to take environmental measures to mitigate the emergence of new cases of asthma among the residents. In addition, surveillance studies are necessary to monitor the trends in the prevalence of asthma in this province.

RESUMO

Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the utilization and diagnostic yields of CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA)using the Revised Geneva score and Wells' criteria, in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism (PE). Methods: One hundred and twelve adult patients underwent CTPA for suspected PE were participated in this study. The outcome was positive or negative CTPA for PE. Revised Geneva and Wells' scores were calculated. The relationship between the results obtained rom these two scores and the available risk factors were compared. Descriptive analysis such as frequency and mean as well as analytical statistics including chi-square were done. The data analysis was performed using SPSS (v. 22). Results: In this study, according to the Wells' criteria calculated for the patients, 33.9% of the patients had low clinical, 56.3% intermediate and 9.8% high clinical probability. Among the 11 high clinical patients, 9(81.8%) were CTPA positive. Based on the revised Geneva score, 65 patients (58%) had low clinical, 36 (32.1%) intermediate and 11(9.8%) high clinical probability. Among the 1 high clinical patients, 8 were CTPA positive. Positive predictive value of the low clinical patients based on Wells' criteria and the revised Geneva score was 18.4% and 30.8%, respectively. Also, positive predictive value for high clinical probability of Wells' criteria and the revised Geneva score was 81.8% and 72.8% respectively. Conclusion: Under/overuse of CTPA in diagnosing PTE is a common problem especially in university hospitals. It is possible to avoid unnecessary CTPA requests using scholarly investigations and more accurate clinical risk assessments.

RESUMO

Background: Urban air pollutants may affect respiratory mortality. This study was conducted to investigate this effect in Ahvaz, one of the most polluted cities in the world. Methods: The impact of 7 major air pollutants including O3, PM10, NO2, CO, and SO2 were evaluated on respiratory mortality in different gender and age groups using a quasi-Poisson, second degree polynomial constrained, distributed lag model, with single and cumulative lag structures adjusted by trend, seasonality, temperature, relative humidity, weekdays, and holiday. Data were analyzed using the dlnm package in R x64 3.2.5 software. Significance level was set at less than 0.05. Results: In adjusted models, for each IQR increase of O3 in the total population, the risk ratio (RR) for respiratory deaths in 0 to 14- day lags was, respectively, 1.009 (95% CI:1.001-1.016) and 1.009 (95% CI:1.002-1.017), and it was 1.021 (95% CI: 1.002-1.040) in cumulative 0 to 14- day lags. For PM10, in the total population and in adjusted models after 0 to 14- day lags and in cumulative lags of 0 to 14 for an IQR increase in the mean concentration of PM10, the RR for respiratory deaths increased significantly and was, respectively, 1.027 (95% CI:1.002-1.051), 1.029 (95% CI:1.006-1.052), and 1.065 (95% CI:1.005-1.128). NO2 showed a significant association with respiratory deaths only in the 18 to 60 year- old age group and in 9- day lags (RR= 1.318, 95% CI:1.002-1.733). Finally, the results showed that for an IQR increase in the mean concentration of CO and SO2, the adjusted RR for respiratory deaths in 9- day lags in the total population was, respectively, RR= 1.058 (95% CI:1.008-1.111) and 1.126 (95% CI:1.034-1.220). Conclusion: Air pollution in Ahvaz is probably causing increased respiratory mortality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most widespread disabling neurological condition in young adults around the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of explicit information (EI) on motor-sequence learning in MS patients. METHODS: Thirty patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), age: 29.5 (SD = 5.6) years and 30 healthy gender-, age-, and education-matched control group participants, age: 28.8 (SD = 6.0) years, were recruited for this study. The participants in the healthy group were then randomly assigned into an EI (n = 15) group and a no-EI (n = 15) group. Similarly, the participants in the control group were then randomly assigned into EI (n = 15) and no-EI (n = 15) groups. The participants performed a serial reaction time (SRT) task and reaction times. A retention test was performed after 48 hours. RESULTS: All participants reduced their reaction times across acquisition (MS group: 46.4 (SD = 3.3) minutes, P < 0.001, and healthy group: 39.4 (SD = 3.3) minutes, P < 0.001). The findings for the within-participants effect of repeated measures of time were significant (F(5.06, 283.7) = 71.33. P < 0.001). These results indicate that the interaction between group and time was significant (F(5.06, 283.7) = 6.44. P < 0.001), which indicated that the reaction time in both groups was significantly changed between the MS and healthy groups across times (B1 to B10). The main effect of the group (MS and healthy) (F(1, 56) = 22.78. P < 0.001) and also the main effect of no-EI vs EI (F(1, 56) = 4.71. P < 0.001) were significant. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that that RRMS patients are capable of learning new skills, but the provision of EI prior to physical practice is deleterious to implicit learning. It is sufficient to educate MS patients on the aim and general content of the training and only to provide feedback at the end of the rehabilitative session.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The positive impacts of exercise therapy on patients' cognitive problems still remain unknown. This study was a pilot intervention to examine the effects of combined exercise on the cognitive problems of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Iranian MS Society over 2012 to 2013. METHODS: This quasi-experimental research was carried out in the form of a pretest/posttest study. Forty two patients with MS were selected from those visiting the rehabilitation center of Iranian MS Society, using non-probability convenience sampling. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) of each patient was recorded before the intervention and Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological (BRB-N) test was administered before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using the analytical tests such as Wilcoxon test. RESULTS: Of 21 participants, 17 subjects (82%, n=14) female with mean (±SD) age of 37 (±9.98) years and mean (±SD) EDSS of 2.35 (±0.90) completed all stages of the study. Changes in long-term storage and permanent long-term retrieval of information after the intervention were statistically significant (p<0.001). In addition, the change in the average of total delay after the intervention was also significant by 1.11 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed the possibility of change in the cognitive abilities of MS patients through physical interventions. This finding emphasizes the necessity of more clinical examinations and increases the hopes for new rehabilitation methods for the disorder.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although most studies on female-headed families focus on women's access to social support, the associations between social capital and quality of life in these families are unclear in many societies (such as Iran). This study aimed to determine the associations between social capital and quality of life in Iranian female headed families. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 152 female-headed households supported by Tehran Municipality, district 9 from April 2011 to July 2012. Convenience sampling was employed. Data were collected using demographic questionnaire, the Iranian version of World Health Organization Quality of Life, and the Word Bank Social Capital. Descriptive and multiple regression methods were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The mean±SD age of participants was 50.8±13.8 years. Findings revealed that in quality of life, the domains of environment health and social relation received the lowest (9.87 ± 2.41) and the highest (12.61 ±3.43) scores respectively; and with respect to social capital, membership in groups and social trust had the least (19.61 ± 17.11) and the most (51.04 ± 17.37) scores, respectively. The multiple regression model revealed a significant positive association between total score of the quality of life and the total score for the social capital (p< 0.001). CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that quality of life of female-headed families and social capital domains are strongly related. This means that by improving the social capital, women's life can also be improved.
