RESUMO

Dual quasi-bound states in continuum (quasi-BICs) enabled by the broken geometric symmetry offer an effective way to design high-quality photonic devices, yet challenged by tunable functionalities. Here we employ the material asymmetry originating from the tunable material property of phase-change materials to design quasi-BICs in all-dielectric compound gratings. We find the even and odd quasi-BICs are modulated by the geometric and material asymmetries, respectively, and this effect is ensured by two different types of structural symmetries in the compound structure. Particularly, tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be achieved by modulating the material asymmetry. Furthermore, we systematically design the compound gratings consisting of the phase-change material of Sb2Se3 to demonstrate tunable dual quasi-BICs and EITs. Analytical calculations and numerical simulations are performed to verify these findings. Our work provides a promising way to enhance the flexibility of realizing quasi-BICs, which may boost tunable applications in nanodevices assisted by quasi-BICs.

RESUMO

Here, we present a new, to the best of our knowledge, approach to control Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) via phase-gradient metasurfaces (PGMs), i.e., periodic grating structures with gradient phase modulation. We show that the phase gradient and the parity design of the PGM can efficiently manipulate higher order diffraction to achieve perfect unidirectional SPR, which significantly alters the SPR in the spectrum and the spatial distribution beyond traditional understanding. Specifically, the even-parity PGM results in incidence-free unidirectional radiation, while the odd-parity PGM enables incidence-locking unidirectional radiation. This unidirectional SPR is very robust, ensured by the parity-dependent diffraction rule in PGMs. A modified formula is presented to reveal the relationship between the radiation wavelength and the radiation angle. Our findings offer a new way to control the electromagnetic radiation of moving charged particles (CPs) with structured materials, which may lead to novel applications in tunable, efficient light sources and particle detectors.

RESUMO

In this work, we propose an efficient approach to controlling the directional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) by dynamically modulating the real-part perturbation in a passive parity-time symmetric metasurface. This non-Hermitian system can experience two exceptional points that can induce two unidirectional excitation states of SPPs along opposite directions. Empowered by its superior modulation depth, the energy ratio and energy intensities of two excited SPP states can be effectively manipulated by this non-Hermitian metasurface. To demonstrate these findings, we design and numerically verify non-Hermitian metasurfaces integrated with an Sb2Se3 phase-change material. Our work provides a promising platform for the controllable engineering of SPP excitations, holding significant potential for the development of new plasmonic devices, including on-chip SPP sources, routers and sorters, and integrated optical circuits.

RESUMO

Effective integration of optical modes within chip-scale devices is critical to realize functional light emission, as it offers abundant physics and a versatile ability to control the mode evolution. Here, we present an efficient approach to achieve switchable emission by flexibly controlling supermode states in a doubly-coupled-ring system with four guided modes. The lasing conditions, which rely on the system's Hamiltonian, are revealed to yield multiple supermode states, including an exceptional-point state, a (quasi-)dark state, and a bright state. By freely engineering the coupling rate via phase-change material, the proposed system allows the generation of any desired states, enabling switchable and multifunctional emissions in fixed on-chip structures. Beyond the manipulation of various supermode emission states, our work presents a promising path toward the development of multifunctional integrated photonic devices, which may have applications in light storage, optical isolation, sensing, and so on.

RESUMO

This retrospective study aimed to investigate clinical diagnostic and management characteristics of double thyroglossal duct cyst (TDC) cases. Seventy-eight patients diagnosed with TDCs who were admitted to the inpatient ward of the Department of Otolaryngology, Dalian Central Municipal Hospital from June 2008 to October 2021 were included in the study. Ultimately, 67 of these patients were diagnosed with single TDCs and 11 patients with double TDCs. Each patient underwent computed tomography and color doppler ultrasound imaging of their neck masses, thyroid color doppler ultrasound imaging, and surgical cyst removal through the classic Sistrunk procedure. All surgically excised specimens were sent to the pathology lab for examination and were confirmed to contain TDCs. Two of the 67 patients with single TDCs experienced postoperative complications related to infections within the operative area, whereas no patients with double TDCs experienced postoperative infection, excessive bleeding, or other surgical complications. All cases were followed up for 1 to 3 years after surgery with no cyst recurrence observed. Double TDCs may present on physical examination as unilateral neck masses that interfere with tongue extension and movement and swallowing that can be identified using imaging methods. Correct clinical diagnosis and complete surgical removal of cysts are key measures for ensuring successful treatment outcomes for patients with TDCs.

RESUMO

Necroptosis is a programmed necrosis in a caspase-independent fashion. The role of necroptosis-related genes (NRGs) in lung cancer remains unknow. Herein, we classified TCGA-LUAD cohort into two necroptosis-related subtypes (C1 and C2) by consensus clustering analysis. The result showed that subtype C1 had a favourable prognosis and higher infiltration levels of immune cells. Moreover, subtype C1 was more activated in immune-associated pathways. Then, we established an NRG prognosis model (NRG score) composed of six NRGs (RIPK3, MLKL, TLR2, TLR4, TNFRSF1A, NDRG2) and divided the cohort into low- and high-risk group. We found that the NRG score was associated with prognosis, tumour immune microenvironment and tumour mutation burden. We also constructed an accurate nomogram model to improve the clinical applicability of NRG score. The result indicated that NRG score may be an independent prognostic marker for lung cancer patients. Taken together, we established a prognosis model that may deepen the understanding of NRGs in lung cancer and provide a basis for developing more effective immunotherapy strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Local neuroinflammation secondary to spinal nerve compression in lumbar disk herniation (LDH) is a key driver contributing to neuropathic pain. Manual therapy (MT), a widely used nonsurgical therapy, can relieve LDH-mediated pain by reducing inflammation. MT has attracted extensive attention; however, its mechanism remains poorly understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of pain signaling transduction, but are rarely reported in the chronic compression of dorsal root ganglia (CCD) model, and further investigation is needed to decipher whether they mediate anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of MT. METHODS: We used a combination of in vivo behavioral and molecular techniques to study MT intervention mechanisms. Neuropathic pain was induced in a CCD rat model and MT intervention was performed according to standard procedures. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect inflammatory cytokine levels in dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Small RNA sequencing, immunofluorescence, Western blot, and qRT-PCR were performed to screen miRNAs and their target genes and determine core factors in the pathway possibly regulated by miRNA-mediated target gene in DRG of MT-treated CCD rats. RESULTS: Compared with naive rats, small RNA sequencing detected 22 differentially expressed miRNAs in DRG of CCD rats, and compared with CCD rats, MT-treated rats presented 19 differentially expressed miRNAs, which were functionally associated with nerve injury and inflammation. Among these, miR-547-3p was screened as a key miRNA mediating neuroinflammation and participating in neuropathic pain. We confirmed in vitro that its function is achieved by directly regulating its target gene Map4k4. Intrathecal injection of miR-547-3p agomir or MT intervention significantly reduced Map4k4 expression and the expression and phosphorylation of IκBα and p65 in the NF-κB pathway, thus reducing the inflammatory cytokine levels and exerting an analgesic effect, whereas intrathecal injection of miR-547-3p antagomir led to opposite effects. CONCLUSIONS: In rats, CCD-induced neuropathic pain leads to variation in miRNA expression in DRG, and MT can intervene the transcription and translation of inflammation-related genes through miRNAs to improve neuroinflammation and alleviate neuropathic pain. MiR-547-3p may be a key target of MT for anti-inflammatory and analgesia effects, which is achieved by mediating the Map4k4/NF-κB pathway to regulate downstream inflammatory cytokines.

RESUMO

Silicon carbide (SiC) aerogels are promising thermal insulators that are lightweight and possess high thermal stability. However, their application is hindered by their brittleness. Herein, an air suction effect induction (ASEI) strategy is proposed to fabricate a super thermally insulating SiC aerogel (STISA). The ASEI strategy exploits the air suction effect to subtly regulate the directional flow of the SiO gas, which can induce directional growth and assembly of SiC nanowires to form a directional lamellar structure. The sintering time is significantly reduced by >90%. Significant improvements in the compression and elasticity performance of the STISA are achieved upon the formation of a directional lamellar structure through the ASEI strategy. Moreover, the lamellar structure endows the STISA with an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.019 W m-1 K-1 . The ASEI strategy paves the way for structural design of advanced ceramic aerogels for super thermal insulation.

RESUMO

Freely controlling wavefronts with metasurfaces has been widely studied in linear optical systems. By constructing phase gradient meta-atoms with nonlinear responses, the wavefronts of high-harmonic fields in nonlinear metasurfaces can be arbitrarily steered by following nonlinear generalized Snell's law (NGSL). However, for incident angles above the critical angle, NGSL fails to predict the generated nonlinear waves. In this work, by involving the reciprocal lattice effect of the nonlinear metasurface, we show a modified diffraction law to completely describe the nonlinear diffraction phenomena. This law is numerically demonstrated and confirmed by designed graphene-based nonlinear metasurfaces in the terahertz regime. Moreover, based on the diffraction law, we designed a nonlinear retroreflector and realized tunable control over a nonlinear wavefront in a single nonlinear metasurface. Our work provides a way to manipulate nonlinear waves and provides a better design of functional nonlinear metadevices.

RESUMO

Non-Hermitian optics has emerged as a feasible and versatile platform to explore many extraordinary wave phenomena and novel applications. However, owing to ineluctable systematic errors, the constructed non-Hermitian phenomena could be easily broken, thus leading to a compromising performance in practice. Here we theoretically proposed a dynamically tunable mechanism through GST-based phase-change material (PCM) to achieve a reconfigurable non-Hermitian system, which is robust to access the chiral exceptional point (EP). Assisted by PCM that provides tunable coupling efficiency, the effective Hamiltonian of the studied doubly-coupled-ring-based non-Hermitian system can be effectively modulated to resist the external perturbations, thus enabling the reconfigurable chiral EP and a tunable non-reciprocal transmission. Moreover, such tunable properties are nonvolatile and require no static power consumption. With these superior performances, our findings pave a promising way for reconfigurable non-Hermitian photonic devices, which may find applications in tunable on-chip sensors, isolators and so on.

RESUMO

In this Letter, the novel physics of higher harmonic (HH) generation of the normal electric field near a dielectric surface is reported in multipactor induced plasma ionization breakdown, as determined by kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. The observed HH frequency is around ten times the fundamental rf driving frequency, but lower than the electron plasma frequency. A theory is constructed which indicates that stream plasma interaction-induced instability is the mechanism of HH generation in the collisional regime. The HH frequency and its corresponding growth rate of the HH oscillation amplitude from the theory are in good agreement with kinetic particle-in-cell simulations.

RESUMO

In this Letter, we introduce a new paradigm for achieving robust asymmetric generation of acoustic vortex field through dual-layer metasurfaces by controlling their intrinsic topologic charges and the parity of geometry design. The underlying physics is contributed to the one-way process of orbital angular momentum (OAM) transition ensured by the broken spatial symmetry and the external topologic charge from the vortex diffraction. We further experimentally demonstrate this novel phenomenon. Our findings could provide new routes to manipulate the asymmetric response of vortex fields, including one-way excitation and propagation, and promise potential applications in passive OAM-based diodes.

RESUMO

We aimed to evaluate a volumetric capnography (Vcap)-derived parameter, the volume of CO2 eliminated per minute and per kg body weight (VCO2/kg), as an indicator of the quality of chest compression (CC) and to predict the return to spontaneous circulation (ROSC) under stable ventilation status. Twelve male domestic pigs were utilized for the randomized crossover study. After 4 min of untreated ventricular fibrillation (VF), mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ventilation were administered. Following 5-min washout periods, each animal underwent two sessions of experiments: three types of CC quality for 5 min stages in the first session, followed by advanced life support, consecutively in two sessions. Different CC quality had a significant effect on the partial pressure of end-tidal carbon dioxide (PetCO2), VCO2/kg, aortic pressure (mean), aortic systolic pressure, aortic diastolic pressure, right atrial pressure (mean), and carotid blood flow (P < 0.05). With the improvement in CC quality, the values of PetCO2 and VCO2/kg also increased, and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The Spearman rank test revealed a significant correlation between the Vcap-derived parameters and hemodynamics. PetCO2 and VCO2/kg have similar capabilities for discriminating survivors from non-survivors, and the area under the curve for both was 0.97. VCO2/kg had similar performance as PetCO2 in reflecting the quality of CC and prediction of achieving ROSC under stable ventilation status in a porcine model of VF-related cardiac arrest. However, VCO2/kg requires a longer time to achieve a stable state after adjusting for quality of CC than PetCO2.

RESUMO

The present study investigated the main components of fenugreek(Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) leaf flavonoids(FLFs) and their antioxidant activity. FLFs were prepared and enriched by solvent extraction, and the flavonoids were characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry(HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). The protective effect of FLFs against H_2O_2-induced stress damage to L02 hepatocytes was also investigated. Firstly, the cell viability was measured by MTT assay. The oxidative stress injury model was induced by H_2O_2 in L02 cells. The release of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), the content of reduced glutathione(GSH) and malondialdehyde(MDA), and the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase(CAT) were measured by assay kits. Hoechst fluorescence staining was performed to observe the cell apoptosis. The expression levels of c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2(ERK1/2), nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2(Nrf2), heme oxygenase 1(HO-1), and their phosphorylated proteins were detected by Western blot. Based on the MS fragment ion information and data in databases, FLFs contained eight flavonoids with quercetin and kaempferol as the main aglycons. The cell viabi-lity assay revealed that as compared with the conditions in the H_2O_2 treatment group, 3.125-25 µg·mL~(-1) FLFs could increase the viability of L02 cells, reduce LDH release and MDA content in a dose-dependent manner, potentiate the activities of SOD, CAT, and GSH, decrease the phosphorylation of JNK and ERK1/2 proteins, and up-regulate the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1. The results of fluorescence staining showed that the nucleus of the H_2O_2 treatment group showed concentrated and dense strong blue fluorescence, while the blue fluorescence intensity of the FLFs group decreased significantly. FLFs showed a protective effect against H_2O_2-induced oxidative damage in L02 cells, and the underlying mechanism is associated with the enhancement of cell capability in clearing oxygen free radicals and the inhibition of apoptosis by the activation of the MAPKs/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. The antioxidant effect of fenugreek leaf is related to its rich flavonoids.

RESUMO

When waves are incident from a high-index medium to a low one, total reflection occurs commonly for the incidence beyond the critical angle. However, this common sense is broken by a purely imaginary metamaterial (PIM), which also supports a real refraction index yet with pure loss and gain elements in their permittivity and permeability. We find that even beyond the critical angle of a lower-index PIM slab, some extraordinary wave modes including laser, anti-laser, perfect attenuator and perfect amplifier can appear. The general conditions of these wave modes are theoretically given out and the underlying mechanisms are revealed. Also, we study the influence of incident polarizations, geometric thickness and the parameters of the PIM slab on these extraordinary wave modes, with more wave propagation behaviors discovered.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis (AP) has a broad spectrum of severity and is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Dysbiosis of gut microbiota may be associated with AP severity. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the composition and functional effects of gut microbiota in different grades of AP severity. METHODS: We carried out shotgun metagenomic sequencing on rectal swab samples from three patients with mild acute pancreatitis (MAP), three with moderately severe acute pancreatitis (MSAP), three with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) and three normal control persons (NOR). Differences analysis in gut microbiota composition and functional enrichment was performed. RESULTS: Gut microbiota in AP patients was characterized by decreased species richness. The most representative gut microbiota in mild acute pancreatitis (MAP), moderately severe acute pancreatitis (MSAP), and severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) was Streptococcus, Escherichia-coli, and Enterococcus, respectively. Each of the three AP-associated genera could differentiate AP from healthy control population. Representative pathways associated with the glutathione metabolism, lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, and amino acid metabolism (valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation) were enriched in MAP, MSAP, and SAP, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows a potential association of gut microbiome composition and function to the progression of AP severity.

RESUMO

In this Letter, we report the significant enhancement of the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) in a plasmonic metasurface with ${\rm S}_4$ symmetry. We find that an enhanced SHE of reflected light can occur in both horizontally and vertically polarized incident beams, and the maximum transverse displacement can approach half of the beam waist. Such a large displacement is caused by the non-resonant and near-zero pseudo-Brewster angles in the plasmonic metasurface. Owing to ${\rm S}_4$ symmetry, a unidirectional SHE is obtained in the metasurface, i.e., large and tiny transverse displacements are realized for a linearly polarized beam incident from the opposite side. This Letter provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, way to achieve an enhanced photonic SHE and offers more opportunities for designing spin-based nanophotonic devices.

RESUMO

Feedback indicators can improve chest compression quality during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, the application of feedback indicators in the clinic practice is rare. Pulse oximetry has been widely used and reported to correlate spontaneous circulation restoration during CPR. However, it is unclear if pulse oximetry can monitor the quality of chest compression. We hypothesized that pulse rate monitored by pulse oximetry can be used as a feedback indicator of the chest compression rate during CPR in a porcine model of cardiac arrest. Seven domestic male pigs (30-35 kg) were utilized in this study. Eighteen intermittent chest compression periods of 2 min were performed on each animal. Chest compression and pulse oximetry plethysmographic waveforms were recorded simultaneously. Chest compression and pulse rates were calculated based on both waveforms. Compression interruption and synchronous pulse interruption times were also measured. Agreement was analyzed between pulse rates and synchronous chest compression rates, as well as between compression interruption times and synchronous pulse interruption times. A total of 126 compression periods of 2 min were performed on seven animals. Interclass correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman analysis revealed reliable agreement between pulse rates and synchronous chest compression rates. Similarly, compression interruption and synchronous pulse interruption times obtained also showed high agreement. Pulse rate can be used as an alternative indicator of chest compression rate during CPR in a porcine model of cardiac arrest. Pulse interruption time also can be used to reflect compression interruption time precisely in this model.

RESUMO

Properly designed black phosphorus (BP) ribbons exhibit extreme anisotropic properties, which can be used to fabricate a high-efficiency transmitter or reflector depending on the linear polarization of excitation. In this study, we design a highly efficient and broad-angle polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on extremely anisotropic BP ribbons around the mid-infrared frequency region with an ultra-thin structure, and study its performance by using transfer matrix calculation and finite element simulation. In the broad frequency range of 80.4 terahertz - 85.0 terahertz (THz) and an wide angle range of more than 50°, the reflectivity and transmissivity of the designed PBS are both larger than 80% and the polarization extinction ratios are higher than 25.50 dB for s-polarization light and 20.40 dB for p- polarization light, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of incident angle and device parameters on the behavior of the proposed PBS is examined. Finally, we show that the operation frequency of this PBS can be tuned by the electron concentration of BP, which can facilitate some practical applications such as tunable polarization splitters or filters, and mid-infrared sensors.

RESUMO

Nonlinear metasurfaces offer new paradigm for boosting optical effect beyond limitations of conventional materials. In this work, we present an alternative way to produce pronounced third-harmonic generation (THG) based on nonlinear field resonances rather than linear field enhancement, which is a typical strategy for achieving a strong nonlinear response. By designing and studying a nonlinear plasmonic-graphene metasurface at terahertz regime with hybrid-guided modes and bound states in the continuum modes, it is found that a THG with a narrow bandwidth can be observed, thanks to the strong resonance generated between a weak THG field and these modes. Such strong nonlinear field resonance greatly enhances the photon-photon interactions, thus resulting in a large effective nonlinear coefficient of the whole system. This finding provides new opportunity for studying nonlinear optical metasurfaces.
