RESUMO
The authors report two cases of Sjögren's syndrome which fulfilled the diagnostic criteria and which were accompanied by voluminous parotid hypertrophy. In a 42 year old woman, bilateral parotid hypertrophy, in addition to the aesthetic problem, also had major psychological repercussions. In a 59 year old woman, parotid hypertrophy was limited on the right but voluminous on the left, with frequent episodes of parotiditis. Total parotidectomy with conservation of the facial nerve, followed by filling of the post-operative cavity by a strip of sterno-mastoid, bilateral in the first case and unilateral in the second, gave excellent results, diminishing the real degree of infirmity which rendered these patients extremely unhappy and the complications related to the parotid hypertrophy of Sjögren's syndrome.

The authors studied G.C.P.G. in a series of 173 patients amongst 894 with epulis type tumours. The highest occurrence rate of G.C.P.G. was found during the period of mixed dentition. Whilst in childhood G.C.P.G. was commoner in boys than girls, after the age of 16 the number of women affected was twice that of men. G.C.P.G. occurs more frequently in the mandible than the maxilla and more often in the premolar-molar region than the incisor-canine region. Osteolysis of the alveolar edge was more marked than in other forms of epulis and in a smaller number of cases osteogenic forms of G.C.P.G. were found with the formation of a substantial amount of reactive bone. From a histopathological standpoint, a connective-tissue/vascular stroma with giant cells and developing in relation with the capillary endothelium, and of similar appearance to G.C.C.G., is noted.

A case of amyloid tumor of the palate is reported in a 10-year-old girl. The past history, the detailed general clinical and laboratory examinations, and biopsy specimens collected from the rectal mucosa, gingiva, tongue, and skin excluded other forms of localizations of amyloidosis. The isolated amyloid tumor is an exceptional form of amyloidosis, and in the available literature we have not found mention of its localization on the palate.

In order to obtain, after caesarean section, a uterine scar of the best quality, the authors have studied the role of trauma on the edges of the wound during the procedure, especially the role of haemostatic clamps. Clinical studies (hysterography) and the comparison with experimental scars on dog's uterus, operated at term, show that instrumental trauma of the edges of the uterine wound affects the quality of the scar.

Enterochromaffin cells (EC) within the antropyloric mucosa in resected stomach from patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers were investigated by means of cytochemical and electron microscopy. The proliferation of antral EC cells was pointed out; among them EC cells of gastric and intestinal type were identified. The proliferation of antral EC cells seems to be related to the intensity of chronic gastritis.

Electron microscopic researches pointed out the existence of amphicrine cells in the peritumoral mucosa on specimens of surgically resected gastric cancer. According to the ultrastructural features two cell subtypes were distinguished: mucoenterochromaffine (EC1, EC2) and empty clear mucoforming cells, corresponding to the mucoargentaffine and mucoargyrophobic types, respectively as the literature showed. Our results showed the amphicrine cells may be interpreted as transformed pathological endocrine cells under gastric cancer conditions.

An endoscopic and histopathologic observation made on 152 cases with gastric symptoms occurring 5-35 years of free interval after gastric resection revealed a gastric stump carcinoma in 14 (9 per cent) of the cases. Research pointed out that previous duodenal ulcer prevailed as compared to the gastric one, and the stomal located carcinomas co-existed with severe dysplasia of the gastric mucosa in six cases.

Five out of 4,172 operated maxillary cysts (3 developed within the maxillary and 2 in the mandible) presented a malignant change of epithelium. In all these 5 cases histology demonstrated a transition from normal to cancerous epithelium. The overall percentage of malignant change was of 0.12%, with 0.077% for non-keratinized epithelium lining odontogenic cysts (3 cases) and 0.65%, that is 8 times higher, for keratinized ones (2 cases). Keratinization of cystic epithelium and chronic inflammatory lesions were the main risk factors.

The behaviour of gastrin cells in the antral mucosa in gastric carcinoma was electron microscopically investigated using specimens of surgically resected stomachs. The results pointed out that in gastric carcinoma there takes place a change of the types of G cell population in the antral mucosa. In this condition, a significant fact was the predominance of intestinal G cells, known to store mainly G 34.

There is much controversy regarding the chronic nonspecific duodenitis as autonomous clinical entity. We have studied 36 patients (16 women, 20 men), aged 24-59 years (mean age 37.8 years), with biliary dyspepsia and endoscopic changes suggesting "duodenitis"; in all patients the following investigations were carried out: gastric secretion, barium X-ray and histological examination of the duodenal mucosa specimens obtained by endoscopic biopsy. There was no significant difference between the patients with duodenitis and normal subjects regarding the maximal acid output. Unspecific radiological changes were noticed in 55.5% of patients with chronic duodenitis. Endoscopy showed varied changes of duodenal mucosa including edema, erythema, erosions and hypertrophic folds. Histology confirmed the presence of inflammation. The patients have been followed-up for three years and none of them developed duodenal ulcer. We conclude that chronic nonspecific duodenitis is an autonomous clinical entity.

Four cases (3 M, 1 F) of Lennert's lymphoma were presented. The age (38-76 years), the clinical aspect and the morphopathological features were characteristic. Despite an intensive chemotherapy, 3 of the 4 patients died between 2 and 16 months (mean survival time 7 months). The controversies about the nosological delimitation and the cellular nature of Lennert's lymphoma are presented. Because of the poor prognosis, it should be considered as a high-grade malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

By means of cytochemical and electron microscopy methods, the behavior of gastrin cells in ulcers of the stomach and duodenum were investigated. The study was performed on specimens of surgical resection from stomach and duodenal ulcers with gastric normacidity. The results point out a significant decrease of gastrin cells in stomach ulcers in comparison with the duodenal ones. These findings in stomach ulcers were attributed to the high intensity of gastritis lesions, histopathologically evidenced. Electron microscopy revealed that gastrin cells were loaded with secretion granules presenting suggestive images of synthesis activity.

In May 1981 the hand, foot and mouth disease was diagnosed for the first time in Ramaia in a 4 year old child. The onset of the disease was characterized by moderate fever, coryza and spontaneous endobuccal pains followed at a short interval of time by the simultaneous of a papulo-vesicular eruption on hands and feet. The eruption was prevalent on the hands and feet fingers as well as on the palmar and plantar regions. Isolated aphthous lesions were seen on the vestibular mucosa. Morphologically, the intraepidermic site of the lesion with an advanced acantholytic process in the vesicular area was noticed. In the superficial and deep tissue perivascular infiltrate with mononucleares were present.
