RESUMO

Extending the cavity length of diode lasers with feedback from Bragg structures and ring resonators is highly effective for obtaining ultra-narrow laser linewidths. However, cavity length extension also decreases the free-spectral range of the cavity. This reduces the wavelength range of continuous laser tuning that can be achieved with a given phase shift of an intracavity phase tuning element. We present a method that increases the range of continuous tuning to that of a short equivalent laser cavity, while maintaining the ultra-narrow linewidth of a long cavity. Using a single-frequency hybrid integrated InP-Si3N4 diode laser with 120 nm coverage around 1540 nm, with a maximum output of 24 mW and lowest intrinsic linewidth of 2.2 kHz, we demonstrate a six-fold increased continuous and mode-hop-free tuning range of 0.22 nm (28 GHz) as compared to the free-spectral range of the laser cavity.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a hybrid integrated and widely tunable diode laser with an intrinsic linewidth as narrow as 40 Hz, achieved with a single roundtrip through a low-loss feedback circuit that extends the cavity length to 0.5 meter on a chip. Employing solely dielectrics for single-roundtrip, single-mode resolved feedback filtering enables linewidth narrowing with increasing laser power, without limitations through nonlinear loss. We achieve single-frequency oscillation with up to 23 mW fiber coupled output power, 70-nm wide spectral coverage in the 1.55 µm wavelength range with 3 mW output and obtain more than 60 dB side mode suppression. Such properties and options for further linewidth narrowing render the approach of high interest for direct integration in photonic circuits serving microwave photonics, coherent communications, sensing and metrology with highest resolution.

RESUMO

We present an integrated hybrid semiconductor-dielectric (InP-Si3N4) waveguide laser that generates frequency combs at a wavelength around 1.5 µm with a record-low intrinsic optical linewidth of 34 kHz. This is achieved by extending the cavity photon lifetime using a low-loss dielectric waveguide circuit. In our experimental demonstration, the on-chip, effective optical path length of the laser cavity is extended to 6 cm. The resulting linewidth narrowing shows the high potential of on-chip, highly coherent frequency combs with direct electrical pumping, based on hybrid and heterogeneous integrated circuits making use of low-loss dielectric waveguides.

RESUMO

The development of large-scale optical quantum information processing circuits ground on the stability and reconfigurability enabled by integrated photonics. We demonstrate a reconfigurable 8×8 integrated linear optical network based on silicon nitride waveguides for quantum information processing. Our processor implements a novel optical architecture enabling any arbitrary linear transformation and constitutes the largest programmable circuit reported so far on this platform. We validate a variety of photonic quantum information processing primitives, in the form of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, bosonic coalescence/anti-coalescence and high-dimensional single-photon quantum gates. We achieve fidelities that clearly demonstrate the promising future for large-scale photonic quantum information processing using low-loss silicon nitride.

RESUMO

We characterize the spectral response of a distributed-feedback resonator when subject to a thermal chirp. An Al2O3 rib waveguide with a corrugated surface Bragg grating inscribed into its SiO2 top cladding is experimentally investigated. We induce a near-to-linear temperature gradient along the resonator, leading to a similar variation of the grating period, and characterize its spectral response in terms of wavelength and linewidth of the resonance peak. Simulations are carried out, showing good agreement with the experimental results and indicating that the wavelength of the resonance peak is a result only of the total accumulated phase shift. For any chirp profile we are able to calculate the reflectivities at the resonance wavelength, and this information largely explains how the linewidth of the resonance changes. This result shows that the increase in linewidth is governed by the increase of the resonator outcoupling losses.

RESUMO

We systematically characterize the Fabry-Pérot resonator. We derive the generic Airy distribution of a Fabry-Pérot resonator, which equals the internal resonance enhancement factor, and show that all related Airy distributions are obtained by simple scaling factors. We analyze the textbook approaches to the Fabry-Pérot resonator and point out various misconceptions. We verify that the sum of the mode profiles of all longitudinal modes is the fundamental physical function that characterizes the Fabry-Pérot resonator and generates the Airy distribution. Consequently, the resonator losses are quantified by the linewidths of the underlying Lorentzian lines and not by the measured Airy linewidth. Therefore, we introduce the Lorentzian finesse which provides the spectral resolution of the Lorentzian lines, whereas the usually considered Airy finesse only quantifies the performance of the Fabry-Pérot resonator as a scanning spectrometer. We also point out that the concepts of linewidth and finesse of the Airy distribution of a Fabry-Pérot resonator break down at low reflectivity. Furthermore, we show that a Fabry-Pérot resonator has no cut-off resonance wavelength. Finally, we investigate the influence of frequency-dependent mirror reflectivities, allowing for the direct calculation of its deformed mode profiles.

RESUMO

Here we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first diode-side-pumped continuous wave (cw) Nd3+:YVO4 self-Raman laser operating at 1176 nm. The compact cavity design is based on the total internal reflection of the laser beam at the pumped side of the Nd3+:YVO4 crystal. Configurations with a single bounce and a double bounce of the laser beam at the pumped faced have been characterized, providing a quasi-cw peak output power of more than 8 W (multimode) with an optical conversion efficiency of 11.5% and 3.7 W (TEM00) having an optical conversion efficiency of 5.4%, respectively. Cw output power of 1.8 W has been demonstrated.

RESUMO

We report an alternative experimental setup to laterally focus light at an angle of 90 deg relative to turbid, multiple scattering media, using preprocessing wavefront shaping. We compare the measured image quality to one obtained in the usual configuration for focusing light through turbid media, where focusing occurs behind the scattering sample. We demonstrate that the depth of focus in the lateral configuration is of the same order of the usual transversal one because both setups are designed to operate in the deep Fresnel zone. This result shows that this novel, versatile lateral configuration allows for effectively focusing around corners through multiple scattering samples.

RESUMO

Here we report 10 laser emission lines in the attractive deep blue to cyan spectral region from an intracavity frequency doubled Raman laser. The fundamental laser field that drives the Raman laser is based on the three-level transition of Nd:YLF. A maximum extracted quasi-continuous wave (qcw) output power of 0.94 W is achieved in the deep blue to cyan spectral regime.

RESUMO

In KGd(1-x)Lu(x)(WO(4))(2):Yb(3+) channel waveguides grown onto KY(WO(4))(2) substrates by liquid phase epitaxy and microstructured by Ar+ beam etching, we produced 418 mW of continuous-wave output power at 1023 nm with a slope efficiency of 71% and a threshold of 40 mW of launched pump power at 981 nm. The degree of output coupling was 70%. By grating tuning in an extended cavity and pumping at 930 nm, we demonstrated laser operation from 980 nm to 1045 nm. When pumping at 973 nm, lasing at 980 nm with a record-low quantum defect of 0.7% was achieved.

RESUMO

Channel waveguides based on a polymer, 6-fluorinated-dianhydride/epoxy, which is actively doped with a Nd complex, Nd(thenoyltrifluoroacetone)(3) 1,10-phenanthroline, are fabricated by a simple and reproducible procedure, spin coating a photodefinable cladding polymer onto a thermally oxidized silicon wafer, photopatterning, backfilling with the active core polymer, and spin coating with an upper cladding layer. Photoluminescence at 1060 nm from the Nd(3+) ions with a lifetime of 130 mus is observed. Optical gain at 1060 nm is demonstrated in channel waveguides with different Nd(3+) concentrations. By accounting for the waveguide loss of 0.1 dB/cm, an internal net gain of 8 dB is demonstrated for a 5.6-cm-long channel waveguide amplifier. Owing to the nature of the Nd(3+) complex, energy-transfer upconversion affects the gain only at Nd(3+) concentrations above 1 x 10(20) cm(-3).
