Volcanoes can produce tsunamis by means of earthquakes, caldera and flank collapses, pyroclastic flows or underwater explosions1-4. These mechanisms rarely displace enough water to trigger transoceanic tsunamis. Violent volcanic explosions, however, can cause global tsunamis1,5 by triggering acoustic-gravity waves6-8 that excite the atmosphere-ocean interface. The colossal eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano and ensuing tsunami is the first global volcano-triggered tsunami recorded by modern, worldwide dense instrumentation, thus providing a unique opportunity to investigate the role of air-water-coupling processes in tsunami generation and propagation. Here we use sea-level, atmospheric and satellite data from across the globe, along with numerical and analytical models, to demonstrate that this tsunami was driven by a constantly moving source in which the acoustic-gravity waves radiating from the eruption excite the ocean and transfer energy into it by means of resonance. A direct correlation between the tsunami and the acoustic-gravity waves' arrival times confirms that these phenomena are closely linked. Our models also show that the unusually fast travel times and long duration of the tsunami, as well as its global reach, are consistent with an air-water-coupled source. This coupling mechanism has clear hazard implications, as it leads to higher waves along land masses that rise abruptly from long stretches of deep ocean waters.

The emergence of a topological transition of the polaritonic dispersion in twisted bilayers of anisotropic van der Waals materials at a given twist angle-the photonic magic angle-results in the diffractionless propagation of polaritons with deep-subwavelength resolution. This type of propagation, generally referred to as canalization, holds promise for the control of light at the nanoscale. However, the existence of a single photonic magic angle hinders such control since the canalization direction in twisted bilayers is unique and fixed for each incident frequency. Here we overcome this limitation by demonstrating multiple spectrally robust photonic magic angles in reconfigurable twisted α-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3) trilayers. We show that canalization of polaritons can be programmed at will along any desired in-plane direction in a single device with broad spectral ranges. These findings open the door for nanophotonics applications where on-demand control is crucial, such as thermal management, nanoimaging or entanglement of quantum emitters.

Platinum group element levels have increased in natural aquatic environments in the last few decades, in particular as a consequence of the use of automobile catalytic converters on a global scale. Concentrations of Pt over tens of µg L-1 have been observed in rivers and effluents. This raises questions regarding its possible impacts on aquatic ecosystems, as Pt natural background concentrations are extremely low to undetectable. Primary producers, such as microalgae, are of great ecological importance, as they are at the base of the food web. The purpose of this work was to better understand the impact of Pt on a cellular level for freshwater unicellular algae. Two species with different characteristics, a green alga C. reinhardtii and a diatom N. palea, were studied. The bioaccumulation of Pt as well as its effect on growth were quantified. Moreover, the induction or repression factors of 16 specific genes were determined and allowed for the determination of possible intracellular effects and pathways of Pt. Both species seemed to be experiencing copper deficiency as suggested by inductions of genes linked to copper transporters. This is an indication that Pt might be internalized through the Cu(I) metabolic pathway. Moreover, Pt could possibly be excreted using an efflux pump. Other highlights include a concentration-dependent negative impact of Pt on mitochondrial metabolism for C. reinhardtii which is not observed for N. palea. These findings allowed for a better understanding of some of the possible impacts of Pt on freshwater primary producers, and also lay the foundations for the investigation of pathways for Pt entry at the base of the aquatic food web.

OBJECTIVES: While the association between pregestational obesity and perinatal complications has been established, it is necessary to update the current understanding of its impact on maternal and foetal health due to its growing prevalence. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between pregestational obesity with the leading perinatal complications during the last 6 years. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was performed in San Felipe, Chile. Anonymised data of 11,197 deliveries that occurred between 2015 and 2021 were included. METHODS: Pregestational body mass index was defined according to the World Health Organisation during the first trimester of pregnancy. The association between pregestational obesity and perinatal complications was analysed by calculating the odds ratio (OR), which was adjusted for confounding variables. Statistical differences were considered with a P-value of <0.05. RESULTS: The prevalence of pregestational obesity was 30.1%. Pregestational obesity was related to a high incidence of perinatal complications (≥3 complications; P < 0.0001). The main perinatal complications were caesarean section, large for gestational age (LGA), gestational diabetes (GD), macrosomia, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), premature rupture of membranes (PROM), intrauterine growth restriction, and failed induction. Pregestational obesity was shown to be a risk factor for macrosomia (OR: 2.3 [95% confidence interval {95% CI}: 2.0-2.8]), GD (OR: 1.9 [95% CI: 1.6-2.1]), HDP (OR: 1.8 [95% CI: 1.5-2.1]), LGA (OR: 1.6 [95% CI: 1.5-1.8]), failed induction (OR: 1.4 [95% CI: 1.0-1.8]), PROM (OR: 1.3 [95% CI: 1.1-1.6]), and caesarean section (OR: 1.3 [95% CI: 1.2-1.4]). CONCLUSIONS: Pregestational obesity has been shown to be a critical risk factor for the main perinatal complications in the study population. Pregestational advice is imperative not only in preventing pregestational obesity but also in the mitigation of critical perinatal complications once they arise.

Scabies is an ectoparasitic dermatosis caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis mite, which lives and reproduces in humans. Its incidence in Spain has increased in recent years. The aim of this study was to complement existing evidence on the increasing number of scabies cases in our country by analyzing changes in ectoparasiticide prescriptions and Internet searches for scabies infestations measured by Google Trends. We also examined correlations between these two variables. Our results show that public interest in scabies has increased in recent years and is positively and significantly correlated with an increasing use of ectoparasiticides. We believe that Google Trends should be considered as a complementary tool for monitoring real-time trends in scabies infestations in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Adequate and effective emergency preparedness for hospital surge capacity is a prerequisite to ensuring standard healthcare services for disaster victims. This study aimed to identify, review, and synthesize the preparedness activities for and the barriers to hospital surge capacity in disasters and emergencies. METHODS: We systematically searched seven databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, Ovid, and PsycINFO). We included all English peer-reviewed studies published in January 2016 and July 2022 on surge capacity preparedness in hospital settings. Two independent researchers screened titles and abstracts, reviewed the full texts, and conducted data extractions using CADIMA software. We assessed the rigor of the included studies using the NIH quality assessment tools for quantitative studies, the Noyes et al. guidelines for qualitative studies, and the MMAT tool for mixed methods studies and summarized findings using the narrative synthesis method. We also used PRISMA reporting guidelines. RESULTS: From the 2560 studies identified, we finally include 13 peer-reviewed studies: 10 quantitative, one qualitative, and two mixed methods. Five studies were done in the USA, three in Iran (n = 3), and the remaining in Australia, Pakistan, Sweden, Taiwan, and Tanzania. The study identified various ways to increase hospital surge capacity preparedness in all four domains (staff, stuff, space, and system); among them, the use of the Hospital Medical Surge Preparedness Index and the Surge Simulation Tool for surge planning was noteworthy. Moreover, nine studies (69%) recognized several barriers to hospital surge capacity preparedness. CONCLUSION: The review provides synthesized evidence of contemporary literature on strategies for and barriers to hospital surge capacity preparedness. Despite the risk of selection bias due to the omission of gray literature, the study findings could help hospital authorities, public health workers, and policymakers to develop effective plans and programs for improving hospital surge capacity preparedness with actions, such as enhancing coordination, new or adapted flows of patients, disaster planning implementation, or the development of specific tools for surge capacity. The importance of food contaminants in the link between diet and cancer has been widely demonstrated. Therefore, different physical and chemical strategies for the control of human exposure to such dietary carcinogens has been explored; however, most of these strategies are complex, costly, and have low efficiency which limited their applications. Hence, microbiological methods have been receiving more attention. Recent in vitro and in vivo studies have indicated that lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast may act as dietary carcinogen-binding agents. This review describes the promising protective role of strains belonging mainly to the Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces genera by acting as dietary carcinogen-binding agents. This property suggests that these microorganisms may have a protective role by reducing the bioaccessibility of dietary carcinogens, thereby decreasing their toxic effects. The mechanisms by which the binding process takes place have not been completely elucidated; thus, the possible underlying mechanisms and factors influencing carcinogens-binding will be addressed.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) in van der Waals (vdW) crystal slabs enable nanoscale infrared light manipulation. Specifically, periodically structured vdW slabs behave as polaritonic crystals (vdW-PCs), where the polaritons form Bloch modes. Because the polariton wavelengths are smaller than that of light, conventional far-field spectroscopy does not allow for a complete characterization of vdW-PCs or for revealing their band structure. Here, we perform hyperspectral infrared nanoimaging and analysis of PhPs in a vdW-PC slab made of h-BN. We demonstrate that infrared spectra recorded at individual spatial positions within the unit cell of the vdW-PC can be associated with its band structure and local density of photonic states (LDOS). We thus introduce hyperspectral infrared nanoimaging as a tool for the comprehensive analysis of polaritonic crystals, which could find applications in the reconstruction of complex polaritonic dispersion surfaces in momentum-frequency space or for exploring exotic electromagnetic modes in topological photonic structures.

Energy-efficient plasma-wakefield acceleration of particle bunches with low energy spread is a promising path to realizing compact free-electron lasers and particle colliders. High efficiency and low energy spread can be achieved simultaneously by strong beam loading of plasma wakefields when accelerating bunches with carefully tailored current profiles [M. Tzoufras et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 145002 (2008)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.101.145002]. We experimentally demonstrate such optimal beam loading in a nonlinear electron-driven plasma accelerator. Bunches with an initial energy of 1 GeV were accelerated by 45 MeV with an energy-transfer efficiency of (42±4)% at a gradient of 1.3 GV/m while preserving per-mille energy spreads with full charge coupling, demonstrating wakefield flattening at the few-percent level.

The time-evolution equation for the time-dependent static structure factor of the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (NE-SCGLE) theory was used to investigate the kinetics of glass-forming systems under isochoric conditions. The kinetics are studied within the framework of the fictive temperature (TF) of the glassy structure. We solve for the kinetics of TF(t) and the time-dependent structure factor and find that they are different but closely related by a function that depends only on temperature. Furthermore, we are able to solve for the evolution of TF(t) in a set of temperature-jump histories referred to as the Kovacs' signatures. We demonstrate that the NE-SCGLE theory reproduces all the Kovacs' signatures, namely, intrinsic isotherm, asymmetry of approach, and memory effect. In addition, we extend the theory into largely unexplored, deep glassy state, regions that are below the notionally "ideal" glass temperature.

The last remaining population of European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) lives in the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne (France) catchment (GGD). Captive young individuals are released into the GGD hydrosystem each year, as part of a restocking programme. This study aims to assess the health status of juveniles A. sturio to current conditions in the GGD hydrosystem, to evaluate their capacity to survive and grow in a moderately anthropized ecosystems. 3-month-old farmed sturgeons were exposed for one month in experimental conditions that mimic the environmental conditions in the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, followed by five months of depuration. After one month of exposure, fish exposed to Dordogne and Garonne waters bioaccumulated higher levels of metals and persistent organic pollutants, displayed a reduced hepato-somatic index, and had depleted levels of lipids and glycogen content in their liver, when compared with the Reference group. However, metabolic and swimming performance, as well as the costs of swimming were not impaired. After the 5 months depuration, a significant decrease of K was observed for all exposure conditions. HSI also decreased with time. The overall health status and adaptive capacity of juvenile A. sturio appeared to be maintained over the experimental 6 months' period. Juveniles of A. sturio seem to have the adaptive capacity to survive and grow in the GGD hydrosystem, after being released as part of a restocking programme.

An essential component of future quantum networks is an optical switch capable of dynamically routing single photons. Here we implement such a switch, based on a fiber-optical Sagnac interferometer design. The routing is implemented with a pair of fast electro-optical telecom phase modulators placed inside the Sagnac loop, such that each modulator acts on an orthogonal polarization component of the single photons, in order to yield polarization-independent capability that is crucial for several applications. We obtain an average extinction ratio of more than 19 dB between both outputs of the switch. Our experiment is built exclusively with commercial off-the-shelf components, thus allowing direct compatibility with current optical communication systems.

In this work, we show that in order to fabricate coherent titania (TiO2) films with precise thickness control, it is critical to generate a complete polymer brush monolayer. To date, demonstrations of such dense polymer monolayer formation that can be utilized for inorganic infiltration have been elusive. We describe a versatile bottom-up approach to covalently and rapidly (60 s processing) graft hydroxyl-terminated poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP-OH) polymers on silicon substrates. P2VP-OH monolayer films of varying thicknesses can subsequently be used to fabricate high-quality TiO2 films. Our innovative strategy is based upon room-temperature titanium vapor-phase infiltration of the grafted P2VP-OH polymer brushes that can produce TiO2 nanofilms of 2-4 nm thicknesses. Crucial parameters are explored, including molecular weight and solution concentration for grafting dense P2VP-OH monolayers from the liquid phase with high coverage and uniformity across wafer-scale areas (>2 cm2). Additionally, we compare the P2VP-OH polymer systems with another reactive polymer, poly(methyl methacrylate)-OH, and a relatively nonreactive polymer, poly(styrene)-OH. Furthermore, we prove the latter to be effective for surface blocking and deactivation. We show a simple process to graft monolayers for polymers that are weakly interacting with one another but more challenging for reactive systems. Our methodology provides new insight into the rapid grafting of polymer brushes and their ability to form TiO2 films. We believe that the results described herein are important for further expanding the use of reactive and unreactive polymers for fields including area-selective deposition, solar cell absorber layers, and antimicrobial surface coatings.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Plaque neovascularization is a hallmark of carotid plaque vulnerability. With contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) it is possible to visualize plaque neovessels in vivo. Our aim was to determine if CEUS-detected neovessels were associated with stroke recurrences in patients with a recent stroke and carotid atherosclerosis. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of consecutive patients with a recent stroke and at least one atherosclerotic plaque in the internal carotid artery on the side consistent with symptoms. All of our patients underwent a carotid ultrasound examination including a CEUS study. Neovascularization was graded into three categories according to the extent of neovessels. During the follow-up, we recorded stroke recurrences. A multivariable Cox regression analysis was performed to evaluate predictors of recurrence. RESULTS: We included 78 patients whose mean age was 74.3 ± 10.4 years. There were 29 (37.2%) patients with a low-grade stenosis (<50%). The remainder presented moderate (50%-69%) or high-grade (≥70%) stenosis. CEUS was not interpretable in 35.9% of the patients, mainly due to calcium shadows. We detected neovascularization in 80% of the plaques. After a median follow-up of 14.1 (interquartile range, 9.5-19.6) months, there were 15 (19.2%) stroke recurrences. In the Cox regression analysis, CEUS-detected neovascularization was independently associated with the risk of stroke recurrence, even after adjusting for the degree of stenosis (hazard ratio, 6.57; 95% confidence interval, 1.66-26.01). CONCLUSION: In patients with an anterior circulation ischaemic stroke and carotid atherosclerosis, plaque neovascularization detected with CEUS was an independent predictor of stroke recurrence.

AIMS: To evaluate tomato epiphyte lactic acid bacteria (LAB) hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation as an indicator of bacteria adhesion to tomato. Likewise, use LAB adhesion and co-aggregation as mechanisms to antagonize pathogen attachment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-four LAB were screened to evaluate their hydrophobic, auto- and co-aggregative properties against Salmonella Typhimurium, Saintpaul, Montevideo and Escherichia coli O157:H7. Subsequently, tomato adhesion of Enterococcus faecium Col1-1C, Weisella cibaria 11-E-2 and W. confusa Col 1-13 with high, medium and low hydrophobicity and high co-aggregation was investigated as well as their pathogen antagonism. Results indicate that bacteria hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation correspond to LAB adhesion to tomato. Enterococcus faecium Col1-1C interfered in most of the pathogen adhesion and micrographs revealed that such effect could be related to the inhibition of structures-type biofilm on E. coli O157:H7 and the aggregate formation on Salmonella. CONCLUSIONS: Lactic acid bacteria hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation can estimate bacteria adhesion to tomato and adhesive and co-aggregative properties could serve as a tool to antagonize foodborne pathogens under specific conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study evidence the interference of Ent. faecium Col1-1C in E. coli O157:H7 biofilm formation and Salmonella colonization.

AIMS: Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) promotes liver collagen deposition, acting on hepatic stellate cells. Despite this, low serum PDGF levels were reported in chronic hepatitis C or B infection, although some studies yield the opposite result. Since PDGF may be related not only to fibrosis but also with vascular, neuronal or muscle disease, it is important to analyze its behavior in alcoholics. METHODS: In total, 17 controls and 62 alcoholic patients consecutively admitted to the hospitalization unit of the Internal Medicine Service were included. We determined serum levels of PDGF C, routine laboratory evaluation, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. We analyzed the relationships between PDGF and liver function, ethanol intake and inflammatory reaction by both univariate and multivariate analysis to discern which variables PDGF levels depend on. RESULTS: Serum PDGF levels were significantly lower among patients (675 ± 466 pg/ml) than among controls (1074 ± 337 pg/ml; Z = 3.70; P < 0.001), and even lower among cirrhotics (549 ± 412 among cirrhotics vs 778 ± 487 among non-cirrhotics; Z = 2.33; P = 0.02). PDGF levels showed a direct correlation with prothrombin activity (ρ = 0.50; P < 0.001), platelet count (ρ = 0.44; P < 0.001) and inverse ones with bilirubin (ρ = -0.39; P = 0.002), IL-6 (ρ = -0.33; P = 0.016), IL-8 (ρ = -0.47; P < 0.001), and MDA levels (ρ = -0.44; P < 0.001). By multivariate analysis, only prothrombin activity and platelet count were independently related to PDGF. CONCLUSION: PDGF-C levels are decreased in alcoholics, especially among cirrhotics. Multivariate analysis discloses that only prothrombin activity and platelet count are independently related to PDGF-C levels.

PURPOSE: To analyze whether vitamin D deficiency could condition the growth response to GH therapy, as well as to analyze if GH treatment modifies both seasonal variations and vitamin D levels in these patients. METHODS: Retrospective study in 98 prepubertal children with GH deficiency (GHD), aged 4.1-8.9 years treated with GH. Growth rate and blood testing (calcium, phosphorus, IGF-I, 25(0H)D and PTH) were monitored at diagnostic and every six months until 24 months of treatment. A control group was recruited (247 healthy children, aged 3.8-9.7 years). The criteria of the US Endocrine Society were used for the definition of hypovitaminosis D. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in vitamin D deficiency among control (12.5%) and GHD groups (15.3%) before starting treatment. Growth rate and IGF-1 and PTH increased (p < 0.05) during GH treatment, but there were no significant differences in calcium, phosphorus and 25(OH)D. There were no significant differences in growth rate and IGF-1, calcium and phosphorus levels in relation to the seasons along GH treatment. There was no correlation between 25(OH)D and IGF-1 during GH therapy. In every programmed control, patients with vitamin D deficiency showed lower growth rate (p < 0.05) compared to patients with vitamin D insufficiency or sufficiency. CONCLUSION: GH treatment, at least during the first two years, does not modify the vitamin D levels. Vitamin D deficiency could condition the response to GH therapy so vitamin D monitoring should be considered as part of the routine evaluation of children with GH treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hypersensitivity reactions to oxaliplatin may affect prognosis by jeopardizing the timely completion of scheduled treatment sessions or by forcing reactive patients into unexpected changes in therapy. Rapid drug desensitization (RDD) enables these patients to receive their first-choice treatments safely. However, the possible effects of RDD on the efficacy of oxaliplatin have never been studied. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of RDD on survival rates in oxaliplatin-hypersensitive patients. METHODS: We performed a 7-year retrospective study to compare survival between oxaliplatin-hypersensitive cases (patients receiving oxaliplatin by RDD) and nonallergic controls (patients receiving standard oxaliplatin infusions). The primary endpoint of this study was overall survival (OS) in cases and controls (Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank test comparisons). RESULTS: OS was 23.7 months (95%CI, 15.3-30.9) for the 67 cases who underwent 337 RDDs, while for controls (n=143), OS was 34.5 months (95%CI, 21.7-55.5). There were no significant differences between the groups (HR, 1.42; 95%CI, 0.93-2.17; P =.104). CONCLUSIONS: Survival outcomes of oxaliplatin-hypersensitive patients who received oxaliplatin via RDD did not differ significantly from those of control patients who received oxaliplatin via standard administration. Receiving oxaliplatin by means of RDD might be an effective therapeutic alternative for oxaliplatin-hypersensitive patients.

RESUMO

A tunable plasma-based energy dechirper has been developed at FLASHForward to remove the correlated energy spread of a 681 MeV electron bunch. Through the interaction of the bunch with wakefields excited in plasma the projected energy spread was reduced from a FWHM of 1.31% to 0.33% without reducing the stability of the incoming beam. The experimental results for variable plasma density are in good agreement with analytic predictions and three-dimensional simulations. The proof-of-principle dechirping strength of 1.8 GeV/mm/m significantly exceeds those demonstrated for competing state-of-the-art techniques and may be key to future plasma wakefield-based free-electron lasers and high energy physics facilities, where large intrinsic chirps need to be removed.
