RESUMO

The site-specific first microsolvation step of furan and some of its derivatives with methanol is explored to benchmark the ability of quantum-chemical methods to describe the structure, energetics, and vibrational spectrum at low temperature. Infrared and microwave spectra in supersonic jet expansions are used to quantify the docking preference and some relevant quantum states of the model complexes. Microwave spectroscopy strictly rules out in-plane docking of methanol as opposed to the top coordination of the aromatic ring. Contrasting comparison strategies, which emphasize either the experimental or the theoretical input, are explored. Within the harmonic approximation, only a few composite computational approaches are able to achieve a satisfactory performance. Deuteration experiments suggest that the harmonic treatment itself is largely justified for the zero-point energy, likely and by design due to the systematic cancellation of important anharmonic contributions between the docking variants. Therefore, discrepancies between experiment and theory for the isomer abundance are tentatively assigned to electronic structure deficiencies, but uncertainties remain on the nuclear dynamics side. Attempts to include anharmonic contributions indicate that for systems of this size, a uniform treatment of anharmonicity with systematically improved performance is not yet in sight.

Herein we present the results of a blind challenge to quantum chemical methods in the calculation of dimerization preferences in the low temperature gas phase. The target of study was the first step of the microsolvation of furan, 2-methylfuran and 2,5-dimethylfuran with methanol. The dimers were investigated through IR spectroscopy of a supersonic jet expansion. From the measured bands, it was possible to identify a persistent hydrogen bonding OH-O motif in the predominant species. From the presence of another band, which can be attributed to an OH-π interaction, we were able to assert that the energy gap between the two types of dimers should be less than or close to 1 kJ/mol across the series. These values served as a first evaluation ruler for the 12 entries featured in the challenge. A tentative stricter evaluation of the challenge results is also carried out, combining theoretical and experimental results in order to define a smaller error bar. The process was carried out in a double-blind fashion, with both theory and experimental groups unaware of the results on the other side, with the exception of the 2,5-dimethylfuran system which was featured in an earlier publication.

The structure of the isolated aggregate of phenyl vinyl ether and methanol is studied by combining a multi-spectroscopic approach and quantum-chemical calculations in order to investigate the delicate interplay of noncovalent interactions. The complementary results of vibrational and rotational spectroscopy applied in molecular beam experiments reveal the preference of a hydrogen bond of the methanol towards the ether oxygen (OH∙∙∙O) over the π-docking motifs via the phenyl and vinyl moieties, with an additional less populated OH∙∙∙P(phenyl)-bound isomer detected only by microwave spectroscopy. The correct prediction of the energetic order of the isomers using quantum-chemical calculations turns out to be challenging and succeeds with a sophisticated local coupled cluster method. The latter also yields a quantification as well as a visualization of London dispersion, which prove to be valuable tools for understanding the role of dispersion on the docking preferences. Beyond the structural analysis of the electronic ground state (S0), the electronically excited (S1) state is analyzed, in which a destabilization of the OH∙∙∙O structure compared to the S0 state is observed experimentally and theoretically.

The dimer of trans-N-methylacetamide serves as a simple model for hydrogen bonds in peptides, free of any backbone distortions. Its preferred structures represent benchmark systems for an accurate quantum chemical description of protein interactions. The trimer allows for either two linear or three strained hydrogen bonds, with the former being the only structural motif considered so far in the literature, but the latter winning in energy by a large margin due to London dispersion. A combination of linear Raman and infrared supersonic jet techniques with B3LYP-D3/aug-cc-pVTZ quantum chemical predictions corrects earlier tentative spectroscopic assignments based on a hybrid density functional without dispersion correction. Linear Amide I-III infrared spectra of the jet-cooled monomer are compared to those recently obtained by action spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The increased cardiovascular morbidity of adults with late repair of aortic coarctation (CoA) has been well documented. In contrast, successful CoA repair in early childhood has a generally good prognosis, though adverse vascular and ventricular characteristics may be abnormal, which could increase long-term risk. This study sought to perform a comprehensive analysis of aortic elasticity and left ventricular (LV) function in patients with aortic coarctation (CoA) using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). In a subgroup of patients, we assessed structure and function of the common carotid arteries to probe for signs of systemic vascular remodeling. METHODS: Fifty-one patients (median age 17.3 years), 13.9 ± 7.5 years after CoA repair, and 54 controls (median age 19.8 years) underwent CMR. We determined distensibility and pulse wave velocity (PWV) at different aortic locations. In a subgroup, common carotid artery distensibility, PWV, wall thickness and wall area were measured. LV ejection fraction (EF), volumes, and mass were measured from short axis views. Left atrial (LA) volumes and functional parameters (LAEFPassive, LAEFContractile, LAEFReservoir) were assessed from axial cine images. RESULTS: In patients distensibility of the whole thoracic aorta was reduced (p < 0.05) while PWV was only significantly higher in the aortic arch (p < 0.01). Distensibility of the descending aorta at the level of the pulmonary arteries and PWV in the descending aorta, both correlated negatively with age at CoA repair. LA volume before atrial contraction and minimal LA volume were higher in patients (p < 0.05). LAEFPassive and LAEFReservoir were reduced (p < 0.05), and LAEFReservoir correlated negatively with aortic arch PWV (p < 0.05). LVEF, volumes and mass were not different from controls. Carotid wall thickness and PWV were higher in patients compared to controls (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Patients after CoA repair have impaired bioelastic properties of the thoracic aorta with impact on LV diastolic function. Reduced descending aortic elasticity is associated with older age at time of CoA repair. The remodeling of the common carotid artery in our sub-study suggests systemic vessel wall changes.

The supramolecular docking of methanol to anisole may occur via an OH⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bond or via an OH⋅⋅⋅π contact. The subtle balance between these two structures can be varied in supersonic jets by one order of magnitude through single to triple methylation of the aromatic ring and introduction of a single tert-butyl substituent, as evidenced by infrared spectroscopy. This steep variation makes it possible to assess the accuracy of relative quantum-chemical energy predictions on a kJ mol(-1) level, promising insights into inductive, mesomeric, and dispersive effects. The zero-point-corrected B3LYP-D3/aVTZ level is shown to provide an accurate relative description of the two very different hydrogen bonds, similar to a wavefunction-based protocol including CCSD(T) corrections applied to the same structures. M06-2X alone systematically overestimates the stability of π coordination.

Background: The aim of this work was to create and evaluate a preoperative non-contrast-enhanced (CE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/angiography (MRA) protocol to assess renal function and visualize renal arteries and any abnormalities in potential living kidney donors. Methods: In total, 28 subjects were examined using scintigraphy to determine renal function. In addition, 3D-pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL), a 2D-non-CE electrocardiogram-triggered radial quiescent interval slice-selective (QISS-MRA), and 4D-CE time-resolved angiography with interleaved stochastic trajectories (CE-MRA) were performed to assess renal perfusion, visualize renal arteries and detect any abnormalities. Two glomerular filtration rates [described by Gates (GFRG) and according to the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration formula (GFRCKD-EPI)]. The renal volumes were determined using both MRA techniques. Results: The mean value of regional renal blood flow (rRBF) on the right side was significantly higher than that on the left. The agreements between QISS-MRA and CE-MRA concerning the assessment of absence or presence of an aberrant artery and renal arterial stenosis were perfect. The mean renal volumes measured in the right kidney with QISS-MRA were lower than the corresponding values of CE-MRA. In contrast, the mean renal volumes measured in the left kidney with both MRA techniques were similar. The correlation between the GFRG and rRBF was compared in the same manner as that between GFRCKD-EPI and rRBF. Conclusion: The combination of pCASL and QISS-MRA constitute a reliable preoperative protocol with a total measurement time of <10 min without the potential side effects of gadolinium-based contrast agents or radiation exposure.

Background Aneurysmal rupture in the aortoiliac segment is a severe, life-threatening condition. Nowadays, in addition to surgical treatment, the implantation of a covered stent graft constitutes a feasible, minimally invasive treatment option. A novel approach is the add-on of transarterial aneurysm sac embolization with N-butyl-cyanoacrylate (NBCA). Here, we report our experience of performing this add-on embolization procedure after endovascular aneurysm repair for complex ruptured aneurysms of the aortoiliac segment. Material and Methods We describe six patients (mean age of 75.2 years; all male) with ruptured aneurysms in the visceral aortic and aortoiliac segment in whom a high-volume transarterial aneurysm sac embolization was performed as an add-on therapy to the implantation of an aortic prosthesis. The aim of this add-on intervention was to achieve the definite embolization of the aneurysmal rupture site and to ensure the best possible aneurysmal sealing. We report the feasibility, technical success, and considerations of using NBCA as well as clinical and follow-up imaging results, given their availability. Results Technical success was achieved in all cases. Clinical success was achieved in four cases. No periprocedural complications or reinterventions were reported. The mean full procedure time was 107.8 min. The mean radiation dose was 12,966.1 cGy/cm2. A mean amount of 10.7 mL of NBCA mixed with lipiodol in a 1:3 to 1:5 ratio was used for all patients. Available follow-up imaging up to 36 months after the procedure showed no aneurysm progression or endoleaks. In two patients, the NBCA cast had almost fully dissolved over the course of follow-up. Conclusions Our study underscores the notion that aneurysm sac embolization using high volumes of NBCA with ethiodized oil as an embolic agent is a feasible and add-on treatment option for optimizing the exclusion of the aneurysm from patients with ruptured aneurysms in the aortoiliac segment.

When the lower frequency OH stretching fundamental of a water molecule is shifted to the 3500 cm-1 spectral range by the solvation of a carbonyl compound, in this case a ketone, its infrared intensity is shared with a dark state. It is shown by chemical and isotope substitution for more than a dozen systems that the location of this resonance is remarkably substitution-independent. Harmonic and anharmonic model calculations support its assignment to a combination of the water bending overtone and in-plane water libration. This previously unrecognized intramolecular-intermolecular coupling in single solvent water has a strength of 7-10 cm-1. It may have been sporadically observed before in a few other carbonyl compounds such as amides, without any previous exploration of its potential universality. The resulting generic picosecond energy redistribution channel for aqueous solutions may represent a slow counterpart and doorway model of what happens on a subpicosecond time scale when the hydrogen bonds become stronger, such as in carboxylic acid dimers or protonated water clusters.

Intermolecular energy balances are supramolecular complexes with a nearly degenerate bistable docking structure and low barriers in between, which can be tuned by chemical substitution to prefer one or the other site. The docking preference can be probed by forming the complexes in a supersonic jet expansion and by measuring their spectroscopic signature. Linear spectroscopies are shown to be well suited for this purpose, in particular when they are assisted by more sensitive techniques and by approximate computed photon interaction cross sections. Molecular analogues of conventional beam balances, seesaw balances, and torsional balances are discussed, all based on noncovalent interactions. The discrimination of energy differences down to the sub-kJ/mol level is demonstrated. The correspondence to intramolecular torsional balances in NMR spectroscopy is outlined. Besides highlighting conformational preferences, the results of intermolecular balance experiments can serve as critical benchmarks for an accurate description of intermolecular forces and zero-point vibrational energies.
