RESUMO

We present an active fiber-based retroreflector providing high quality phase-retracing anti-parallel Gaussian laser beams for precision spectroscopy of Doppler sensitive transitions. Our design is well-suited for a number of applications where implementing optical cavities is technically challenging and corner cubes fail to match the demanded requirements, most importantly retracing wavefronts and preservation of the laser polarization. To illustrate the performance of the system, we use it for spectroscopy of the 2S-4P transition in atomic hydrogen and demonstrate an average suppression of the first order Doppler shift to 4 parts in 106 of the full collinear shift. This high degree of cancellation combined with our cryogenic source of hydrogen atoms in the metastable 2S state is sufficient to enable determinations of the Rydberg constant and the proton charge radius with competitive uncertainties. Advantages over the usual Doppler cancellation based on corner cube type retroreflectors are discussed as well as an alternative method using a high finesse cavity.

RESUMO

The waste management strategy for the future should meet the benefits of humanity safety, respect principals of planet ecology, and compatibility with other habitability systems. For these purpose the waste management technologies, relevant to application of the biodegradation properties of bacteria are of great value. The biological treatment method is based upon the biodegradation of organic substances by various microorganisms. The advantage of the biodegradation waste management in general: it allows to diminish the volume of organic wastes, the biological hazard of the wastes is controlled, and this system may be compatible with the other systems. The objectives of our study were: to evaluate effectiveness of microbial biodegradation of non-pretreated substrate, to construct phneumoautomatic digester for organic wastes biodegradation, and to study microbial characteristics of active sludge samples used as inoculi in biodegradation experiment. The technology of vegetable wastes treatment was elaborated in IBMP and BMSTU. For this purpose the special unit was created where the degradation process is activated by enforced reinvention of portions of elaborated biogas into digester. This technology allows to save energy normally used for electromechanical agitation and to create optimal environment for anaerobic bacteria growth. The investigations were performed on waste simulator, which imitates physical and chemical content of food wastes calculated basing on the data on food wastes of moderate Russian city. The volume of created experimental sample of digester is 40 l. The basic system elements of device are digesters, gas receiver, remover of drops and valve monitoring and thermal control system. In our testing we used natural food wastes to measure basic parameters and time of biodegradation process. The diminution rate of organic gained 76% from initial mass taking part within 9 days of fermentation. The biogas production achieved 46 l per 1 kg of substrate. The microbial studies of biodegradation process revealed following peculiarities: (i) gradual quantitative increasing of Lactobacillus sp. (from 10(3) to 10(5) colony forming units (CFU) per ml), (ii) activation of Clostridia sp. (from 10(2) to 10(4)CFU/ml), (iii) elimination of aerobic conventional pathogens (Enterobacteriaceae sp., Protea sp., staphylococci). The obtained results allow to evaluate effectiveness of proposed technology and to determine the leading role of lactobacilli and clostridia in process of natural wastes biodegradation. Our further investigations shall further be concentrated on creation of artificial inoculi for launching of food wastes biodegradation. These inoculi will include active and adapted strains of clostridia and lactobacilli.

RESUMO

Analytical, research and design efforts were made to modify the technology of anaerobic fermentation of plant and animal wastes. Results were publication of a register of wastes of a middle size Russian town, development of a simulator of natural food wastes, and development and testing of a laboratory prototype of original system for anaerobic degradation of natural food wastes. It was shown that association of Clostridia and lactobacilli is best to initiate and implement the first phase of biodegradation of natural wastes.

RESUMO

We propose a statistico-probabilistic approach to investigate the process of homogeneous formation of droplets in a vapor phase in the presence of an already formed and growing droplet under free-molecular regime of droplet growth after the instantaneous creation of initial vapor supersaturation. We find the probability density for the formation of a new, nearest (neighbor) droplet in the vicinity of an initially formed droplet. The mean distance between two neighboring droplets is also determined, as well as the average time lag for the formation of the nearest (neighbor) droplet; the latter quantity serves as an estimate for the duration of the nucleation stage. An estimate for the average number of droplets forming in unit volume by the end of the nucleation stage is also given. Our results are compared with the predictions of classical nucleation theory which assumes the density uniformity of a metastable phase. Where the proposed approach is applicable, there is observed qualitative agreement between the results. The underlying cause of this agreement is analyzed and the limits of applicability of the uniformity approximation are clarified.

RESUMO

A theory of simultaneous nucleation and drop growth in a supersaturated vapor is developed. The theory makes use of the concept of "nearest-neighbor" drops. The effect of vapor heterogeneity caused by vapor diffusion to a growing drop, formed previously, is accounted for by considering the nucleation of the nearest-neighbor drop. The diffusional boundary value problem is solved through the application of a recent theory that maintains material balance between the vapor and the drop, even though the drop boundary is a moving one. This is fundamental to the use of the proper time and space dependent vapor supersaturation in the application of nucleation theory. The conditions are formulated under which the mean distance to the nearest-neighbor drop and the mean time to its appearance can be determined reliably. Under these conditions, the mean time provides an estimate of the duration of the nucleation stage, while the mean distance provides an estimate of the number of drops formed per unit volume during the nucleation stage. It turns out, surprisingly, that these estimates agree fairly well with the predictions of the simpler and more standard approach based on the approximation that the density of the vapor phase remains uniform during the nucleation stage. Thus, as a practical matter, in many situations, the use of the simpler and less rigorous method is justified by the predictions of the more rigorous, but more complicated theory.

RESUMO

A new mathematical treatment of the problem of droplet growth via diffusion of molecules from a supersaturated vapor is presented. The theory is based on a semiquantitative analysis with good physical arguments and is justified by its reasonable predictions. For example it recovers the time honored growth law in which, to a high degree of approximation, the droplet radius increases with the square root of time. Also, to a high degree of approximation, it preserves material balance such that, at any time, the number of molecules lost from the vapor equals the number in the droplet. Estimates of the remaining approximational error are provided. On another issue, we show that, in contrast, the conventional treatment of droplet growth does not maintain material balance. This issue could be especially important for the nucleation of another droplet in the vicinity of the growing droplet where the rate of nucleation depends exponentially on supersaturation. Suggestions for further improvement of rigor are discussed.
