RESUMO

Ecological integrity assessment and degradation diagnosis are used globally to evaluate the health of water bodies and pinpoint critical stressors. However, current studies mainly focus on separate evaluation or diagnosis, leading to an inadequate exploration of the relationship between stressors and responses. Here, based on multiple data sets in an urban lake system, a synchronous evaluation-diagnosis model with quantitative stressor-response analysis was advanced, aiming to improve the accuracy of evaluation and diagnosis. The weights for key physicochemical stressors were quantitatively determined in the sequence of NDAVIadj > CODMn > TP > NH4+-N by the combination of generalized additive model and structural equation modeling, clarifying the most significant effects of aquatic vegetation on the degradation of fish assemblages. Then, sensitive biological metrics were screened by considering the distinct contributions of four key stressors to alleviate the possible deviation caused by common methods. Finally, ecological integrity was evaluated by summing the key physicochemical stressors and sensitive biological metrics according to the model-deduced weights instead of empirical weights. Our system's diagnosis and evaluation results achieved an accuracy of over 80% when predicting anthropogenic stress and biological status, which highlights the great potential of our multiple-level system for ecosystem management.

RESUMO

We aim to investigate the efficacy and safety of laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) in treating recurrent glioblastomas (rGBMs). A comprehensive search was conducted in four databases to identify studies published between January 2001 and June 2022 that reported prognosis information of rGBM patients treated with LITT as the primary therapy. The primary outcomes of interest were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) at 6 and 12 months after LITT intervention. Adverse events and complications were also evaluated. Eight eligible non-comparative studies comprising 128 patients were included in the analysis. Seven studies involving 120 patients provided data for the analysis of PFS. The pooled PFS rate at 6 months after LITT was 25% (95% CI 15-37%, I2 = 53%), and at 12 months, it was 9% (95% CI 4-15%, I2 = 24%). OS analysis was performed on 54 patients from six studies, with an OS rate of 92% (95% CI 84-100%, I2 = 0%) at 6 months and 42% (95% CI 13-73%, I2 = 67%) at 12 months after LITT. LITT demonstrates a favorable safety profile with low complication rates and promising tumor control and overall survival rates in patients with rGBMs. Tumor volume and performance status are important factors that may influence the effectiveness of LITT in selected patients. Additionally, the combination of LITT with immune-based therapy holds promise. Further well-designed clinical trials are needed to expand the application of LITT in glioma treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Deep learning reconstruction (DLR) with denoising has been reported as potentially improving the image quality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Multi-modal MRI is a critical non-invasive method for tumor detection, surgery planning, and prognosis assessment; however, the DLR on multi-modal glioma imaging has not been assessed. PURPOSE: To assess multi-modal MRI for glioma based on the DLR method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We assessed multi-modal images of 107 glioma patients (49 preoperative and 58 postoperative). All the images were reconstructed with both DLR and conventional reconstruction methods, encompassing T1-weighted (T1W), contrast-enhanced T1W (CE-T1), T2-weighted (T2W), and T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (T2-FLAIR). The image quality was evaluated using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and edge sharpness. Visual assessment and diagnostic assessment were performed blindly by neuroradiologists. RESULTS: In contrast with conventionally reconstructed images, (residual) tumor SNR for all modalities and tumor to white/gray matter CNR from DLR images were higher in T1W, T2W, and T2-FLAIR sequences. The visual assessment of DLR images demonstrated the superior visualization of tumor in T2W, edema in T2-FLAIR, enhanced tumor and necrosis part in CE-T1, and fewer artifacts in all modalities. Improved diagnostic efficiency and confidence were observed for preoperative cases with DLR images. CONCLUSION: DLR of multi-modal MRI reconstruction prototype for glioma has demonstrated significant improvements in image quality. Moreover, it increased diagnostic efficiency and confidence of glioma.

RESUMO

Seeking available and economical carbon sources for denitrification process is an intractable issue for wastewater treatment. However, no study compared different types of waste sludge as carbon source from denitrification mechanism, organics utilization and microbial community aspects. In this study, primary and secondary sludge were pretreated by thermophilic bacteria (TB), and its hydrolysis or acidogenic liquid were prepared as carbon sources for denitrification. At C/N of 8-3, the variations of NO3--N and NO2--N were profiled in typical cycles and denitrification kinetics was analyzed. Primary sludge achieved a competitive NOX-N removal efficiency with less dosage than secondary sludge. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was introduced to analyze organic composition from functional-group perspective and the utilization of organic matters in different sludge carbon sources was investigated. To further analyze the microbial community shift in different denitrification systems, high-throughput sequencing technology was applied. Results showed that denitrifier Thauera, belonging to Proteobacteria, was predominant, and primary sludge acidogenic liquid enriched Thauera most intensively with relative abundance of 47.3%.

RESUMO

Hexachloropentadiene (HCPD) is a highly toxic compound that is mainly used for preparation of organochlorine insecticides. To investigate HCPD contamination of the environment during pesticide processing, 153 air, soil, and biota samples were collected around an agrochemical factory in different seasons of 1 year and analyzed for HCPD. The HCPD concentrations were 0.01-12.7 ng/m3 (average 2.60 ng/m3) in the air samples and 0.14-51.5 ng/g (average 4.11 ng/g) in the soil samples. HCPD concentrations were highest within 1 km north of the production site, which was in the downwind direction of the factory and storage tanks, especially in autumn and winter. Soil-air exchange analysis showed that HCPD was deposited from air to soil with a flux of 0.003 to 0.20 ng/(m2 d) throughout the year. The dismantling of obsolete equipment accelerated the release of HCPD into the air and increased the amount of HCPD deposited in the soil. HPCD concentration ranges were 0.44-55.7 ng/g dry weight [d.w.] (average 22.2 ng/g d.w.) and 6.69-91.4 ng/g d.w. (average 26.2) in locally grown rice and wheat, respectively. The concentration range was 12.1-1596 ng/g lipid weight (average 560 ng/g lipid weight) in local organisms, except for chicken. In tissues from locally raised chicken, the HCPD concentrations decreased in the order of gizzard, liver, heart, and meat. HCPD was amplified through a short food chain (soil, Vigna unguiculata leaves, larvae of Pieris rapae, and chicken), and the bioaccumulation factor gradually increased over a range of 1.19-25.1 (mean 9.81).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas, the most prevalent benign intracranial neoplasms, have been studied extensively for many years, but significant problems remain. To date, there is a scarcity of detailed studies elucidating the hotspots and future directions of meningiomas research. METHODS: A comprehensive search and screening strategy was used to collect relevant studies published between 2011 and 2021 in the Web of Science Core Collection database. Thorough and systematic coauthorship and co-occurrence keyword maps were generated, and tables of statistics summarizing countries, organizations, authors, and keywords were created. RESULTS: A total of 1544 articles meeting the screening criteria were collected. The countries producing the most publications between 2011 and 2021 were the United States, Germany, and China, with 586, 244, and 197 records, repectively. The cooperation networks also revolved mainly around these 3 countries, particularly the United States. The most frequently used keyword was "surgery," followed by "recurrence" and "management," with the frequencies of 248, 212, and 163, respectively. The most prominent cluster during the last decade was the #0 methylation cluster, and several keywords, including "survival," "brain invasion," and "magnetic resonance imaging," exhibited significant burst strength. CONCLUSIONS: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the research landscape and to identify potential research directions. Our findings disclose productive individuals and institutions. The current research focuses on the molecular pathology of meningiomas, improvements in techniques, and advances in diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging. In particular, the improvements in molecular pathology might direct future research directions.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) pollution in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) of China has grown to be a serious issue, yet there is a lack of understanding of the environmental risks of MPs in the sediment of the entire basin. This work revealed the spatial distribution characteristics of MPs in YRB sediments, and it methodically assessed the ecological risks of MPs by taking into consideration their abundance, toxic effects, and polymer types. The results showed a high heterogeneity in the abundance of MPs in YRB sediments, with an average of 611 particles/kg dry weight (DW) sediment. Small-sized MPs (<1 mm), fibrous, transparent-colored and polypropylene (PP) accounted for the majority with 71.6%, 68%, 37% and 30.8%, respectively. Correlation analysis indicated significant influences of human activities such as population, industrial structure, and urban wastewater discharge on the abundance and morphological types of MPs in sediments. Based on chronic toxicity data exposed to sediments, a predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) of 539 particles/kg DW was calculated using the species susceptibility distribution (SSD). Multiple deterministic risk assessment indices indicated that MPs in YRB sediments exhibited primarily low pollution load levels, moderate-to-low potential ecological risk levels, and high levels of polymer pollution. However, probabilistic risk assessment revealed an overall low risk of MPs in YRB sediments. Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrated that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polycarbonate (PC) made a great contribution to ecological risk and should be considered as priority control pollutants in MPs. In addition, various assessments showed that the ecological risk of MPs in river sediments was higher than that in lake reservoir sediments. This is the first study to comprehensively assess the ecological risk of MPs in sediments of the YRB, which improves the understanding of the basin-wide occurrence characteristics and environmental risks of MPs in freshwater systems.

RESUMO

Microplastic (MP) pollution in the Yangtze River Basin, China, has become an environmental issue of great concern. However, most studies on MPs have focused on a part of the Yangtze River Basin, and still lack knowledge on the risk of MPs exposure in surface waters of the whole basin. This study overviews the differences in abundance and spatial distribution of MPs in surface waters basin-wide and comprehensively assesses the ecological risk of MPs exposure in surface waters of the Yangtze River Basin by considering the abundance and toxicity effects. The results showed that the MP abundance at the collected sampling sites ranged from 0 to 44,080 particles/m3, with a mean of 3441 particles/m3. MPs were unevenly distributed throughout the basin, with hotspots such as Three Gorges Reservoir, Yangtze River estuary, and some urban lakes showing relatively higher abundance than the surroundings. Based on the available toxicity data, chronic and acute predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) of 12.3 particles/L and 21 particles/L were derived for freshwater MPs exposure using constructed species sensitivity distributions (SSDs). The hazard quotient (HQ) method was used to compare the environmental exposure concentrations of MPs with PNECs, and the results showed that 71.8% of the sampling sites in the Yangtze River Basin had moderate chronic ecological risk, while 43% of the sampling sites had moderate acute ecological risk. Overall, the ecological risk of MPs in lake and reservoir water was higher than that in river water. Joint probability curves (JPCs) showed that the overall risk probability of MPs in the surface water of the Yangtze River Basin was lower than that of other basins in China and other countries. This research provides valuable information for the ecological risk assessment of MPs at the watershed scale.

RESUMO

Although the granular activated carbon (GAC) has been proved to enhance conventional single-phase anaerobic digestion (AD), how it impacts on acidogenic and methanogenic fermentation is still unknown. In this study, GAC was introduced to elevate the efficiency of two-phase AD, with mixture of primary and secondary sludge as substrate. Five dosages: 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 g GAC/g TSS (Total Suspended Solids) were investigated to determine influences of GAC. The variations of biogas (hydrogen and methane), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), organics degradation and transformation in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and dissolved organic matters (DOM) were analyzed. Modified Gompertz model and first-order reaction equation was applied to analyze the kinetics of biogas yield and VFAs utilization, respectively. Sludge reduction, electrical conductance and pH were also quantified to evaluate the system performance. The results showed that GAC could improve two-phase AD performance by enhancing methane production and organics conversion.

RESUMO

In this study, thermophilic bacteria pretreated primary and secondary waste sludge hydrolysis and acidification liquid were used as denitrification carbon sources at different HRTs (hydraulic retention time). The NO3--N removal rate of 99.3%, 99.0%, 99.9% and 99.2% was achieved at the optimal HRT of 8, 8, 4 and 6 h, respectively. Meanwhile, the utilization of COD (Chemical oxygen demand), proteins, carbohydrates, and VFAs (Volatile fatty acids) in carbon source during denitrification was also investigated. High-throughput sequencing technology showed that the microbial community changed with the different sludge carbon sources. And the dominant genus in both reactors was Thauera, which played a key role in denitrification.

RESUMO

To understand the denitrification efficiency and microbial community shift with increasing salinity in salinity adaptation and shock loading process, nitrate (NO3--N), nitrite (NO2--N) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were monitored feeding acetate and primary sludge fermentation liquid. During adaptation process, salinity had little effect on NO3--N removal efficiency (>99.0%) with acetate-fed, while for fermentation liquid-fed, it decreased to around 97% at high salinity (>2.5%). Effluent NO2--N was lower than 0.1 mg/L, though obvious fluctuation of NO2--N was observed with fermentation liquid-fed when salinity change. During shock loading process, denitrification process all had slight decrease when the salinity abruptly increased to 5.0%. Traditional denitrifier of Thauera was the dominant genus, and a specialized microbial community of Azoarcus in salinity adaptation and Paracoccus in shock loading for denitrification showed high salinity tolerant. Meanwhile, microbial diversity was enriched with fermentation liquid-fed at high salinity condition.

RESUMO

External carbon source was usually added to enhance denitrification efficiency for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. In this study, waster sludge alkaline fermentation liquid was successfully employed as an alternative carbon source for biological denitrification. The denitrification performance was studied at different C/Ns (carbon-to-nitrogen ratios) and HRTs (hydraulic retention times). A C/N of 7 and an HRT of 8 h were the optimal conditions for denitrification. The nitrate removal efficiency of 96.4% and no obvious nitrite accumulation in the effluent were achieved under the optimal conditions with a low soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) level. The sludge carbon source utilization was analyzed and showed that the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were prior utilized than proteins and carbohydrates. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) was adopted to analyze the compositional and variations of dissolved organic matters (DOM). Moreover, a high denitrification rate (VDN) and potential (PDN) with low heterotroph anoxic yield (YH) was exhibited at the optimal C/N and HRT condition, indicating the better denitrification ability and organic matter utilization efficiencies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adrenal venous sampling (AVS) is the gold standard for preoperative differentiation between unilateral and bilateral primary aldosteronism (PA). However, results are sometimes vitiated by failing to access the right adrenal vein. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study assumed that clinical decisions can be made with incomplete AVS data, by comparing aldosterone/cortisol (A/C) ratio in both left and right adrenal veins with that in the inferior vena cava (LAV/IVC and RAV/IVC). Receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curve and scatterplot were used to certify the upper and lower cutoffs and to analyze the significance of discrimination. One hundred and sixty patients diagnosed with PA from April 2017 to June 2018 underwent AVS in the Urology Department of West China Hospital, Chengdu, China. One hundred and eleven with complete AVS data were divided into 3 groups: left-sided (N=40), right-sided (N=29) and bilateral (N=42). We also collected patients from September 2018 to April 2019 in our department as validation cohort to test our hypothesis. RESULTS: On the basis of LAV/IVC, RAV/IVC and diagnostic category, upper cutoff was 1.14 (50% sensitivity and 100% specificity) and lower cutoff 0.07 (27.5% sensitivity and 100% specificity) for LAV/IVC, and 1.04 (55% sensitivity and 100% specificity) and 0.08 (40% sensitivity and 100% specificity), respectively, for RAV/IVC. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic model in this study contributes to clinical decision-making in patients with only partial PA with incomplete AVS data.

RESUMO

Using waste sludge internal carbon source for nitrogen removal in wastewater has drawn much attention, due to its economic advantages and sludge reduction. In this study, the performance of enhanced denitrification with waste sludge thermal hydrolysate and fermentation liquid as carbon sources at different SCOD/N (soluble chemical oxygen demand/NO3--N) was investigated. The optimum SCOD/N was 8 for sludge thermal hydrolysate and 7 for fermentation liquid, with NO3--N removal efficiency of 92.3 and 98.9%, respectively, and no NO2--N accumulation. To further understand the fate of sludge carbon source during denitrification, the changes of SCOD, proteins, carbohydrates, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were analyzed, and three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) analysis was introduced. The utilization of SCOD was consistent with NO3--N reduction, and the utilization efficiency of different organic matter was as follows: VFAs > proteins > carbohydrates. The soluble organic-like materials (region IV) were the most readily utilized organic matter according to three-dimensional fluorescence EEM spectroscopy. Regarding denitrification mechanisms, the denitrification rate (VDN), denitrification potential (PDN), heterotroph anoxic yield (YH), and the most readily biodegradable COD (SS) were also investigated.

RESUMO

To gain a better understanding of the influence on two-stage anaerobic digestion of waste sludge with thermophilic bacteria (TB) and alkyl polyglucose (APG) pretreatment, changing of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), carbohydrate and protein in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and dissolved organic matters (DOM) were analyzed. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) was also used to investigate compositional and structural characteristics of DOM. The highest hydrogen and methane yield of TB pretreated sludge was 12.2 ml/g VS (volatile suspended solid) and 124.7 ml/g VS, and that of APG pretreated sludge was 28.3 ml/g VS and 19.9 ml/g VS. The VS removal of TB pretreated sludge (36.7%) was higher than APG pretreated sludge (27.1%) in the two-stage anaerobic digestion. The APG pretreatment could inhibit the activity of methanogens and the substrate (such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs), protein and soluble microbial materials) was accumulated compared with TB pretreatment.

RESUMO

Waste activated sludge (WAS) internal carbon source can efficiently and economically enhance denitrification, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) is one of the most important operational parameters for denitrification. The effects of HRT on denitrification were investigated with WAS thermal hydrolysis liquid and acidogenic liquid as carbon sources in this study. The optimal HRT was 12h for thermal hydrolysis liquid and 8h for acidogenic liquid, with NO3--N removal efficiency of 91.0% and 97.6%, respectively. In order to investigate the utilization of sludge carbon source by denitrifier, the changes of SCOD (Soluble chemical oxygen demand), proteins, carbohydrates, and VFAs (Volatile fatty acids) during denitrification process were analyzed and three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) analysis was introduced. The kinetics parameters of denitrification rate (VDN), denitrification potential (PDN) and heterotroph anoxic yield (YH) were also investigated using sludge carbon source at different HRT.
