BACKGROUND: The detection of occult bone metastases is a key factor in determining the management of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC), especially when curative surgery is considered. This prospective study assessed the sensitivity of (18)F-labelled sodium fluoride in conjunction with positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-NaF PET/CT) for detecting RCC bone metastases, compared with conventional imaging by bone scintigraphy or CT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An adaptive two-stage trial design was utilized, which was stopped after the first stage due to statistical efficacy. Ten patients with stage IV RCC and bone metastases were imaged with (18)F-NaF PET/CT and (99m)Tc-labelled methylene diphosphonate ((99m)Tc-MDP) bone scintigraphy including pelvic single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Images were reported independently by experienced radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians using a 5-point scoring system. RESULTS: Seventy-seven lesions were diagnosed as malignant: 100% were identified by (18)F-NaF PET/CT, 46% by CT and 29% by bone scintigraphy/SPECT. Standard-of-care imaging with CT and bone scintigraphy identified 65% of the metastases reported by (18)F-NaF PET/CT. On an individual patient basis, (18)F-NaF PET/CT detected more RCC metastases than (99m)Tc-MDP bone scintigraphy/SPECT or CT alone (P = 0.007). The metabolic volumes, mean and maximum standardized uptake values (SUV mean and SUV max) of the malignant lesions were significantly greater than those of the benign lesions (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: (18)F-NaF PET/CT is significantly more sensitive at detecting RCC skeletal metastases than conventional bone scintigraphy or CT. The detection of occult bone metastases could greatly alter patient management, particularly in the context when standard-of-care imaging is negative for skeletal metastases.

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce the WARPS/STAID classification system for patellofemoral instability. The secondary purpose is to establish the validity and reliability of the WARPS/STAID classification system. METHODS: Patients (n = 31) with a confirmed diagnosis of patellofemoral instability underwent a thorough knee history and physical examination with 3 raters. The raters graded each component of the WARPS/STAID classification system on a visual analogue scale (VAS). A single Global VAS WARPS/STAID score was graded after all other components of the classification system were completed. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2, 3) was calculated for each metric of the classification scale and for the Global score. Concurrent validity was assessed by correlating the WARPS/STAID score with the Kujala score. Subjects were assigned to one of three categories (WARPS, STAID, or mixed characteristics) according to the Total WARPS/STAID score to determine the level of agreement between the three raters. RESULTS: Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2, 3) of the WARPS/STAID classification continuum ranged between 0.73 and 0.91 for the individual metrics of the classification. The ICC (2, 3) for the Global WARPS/STAID score was 0.75. The mean Kujala score (m = 61, SD 18) was significantly correlated with the total WARPS/STAID score (r = 0.387, p < 0.05). The majority of subjects were assigned to either the WARPS or STAID categories. CONCLUSION: This study introduced the WARPS/STAID classification system and established both validity and reliability in subjects with patellofemoral instability. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: II.

BACKGROUND: No gold standard exists for the management of postoperative pain following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). We compared the pain scores and medication use of patients undergoing single-bundle (SB) or double-bundle (DB) ACLR in the acute postoperative period. Pain and medication use was also analyzed for spinal versus general anesthesia approaches within both surgery types. METHODS: We assessed 2 separate cohorts of primary ACLR patients, SB and DB, for 14 days postoperatively. We used a standard logbook to record self-reported pain scores and medication use. Pain was assessed using a 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS). Medications were divided into 3 categories: oral opioids, oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and acetaminophen. RESULTS: A total of 88 patients undergoing SB and 41 undergoing DB ACLR were included in the study. We found no significant difference in VAS pain scores between the cohorts. Despite similar VAS pain scores, the DB cohort consumed significantly more opioid and analgesia medication (p = 0.011). Patients who underwent DB with spinal anesthesia experienced significantly less pain over the initial 14-day postoperative period than those who received general anesthesia (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Adequate pain relief was provided to all ACLR patients in the initial postoperative period. Patients in the DB cohort experienced more pain, as evidenced by the significant diffrence in consumption of opioids and acetaminophen, than the SB cohort. Patients who underwent spinal anesthesia experienced less pain in the acute postoperative period than those who received general anesthesia.
CONTEXTE: Il n'existe pas de norme établie pour la prise en charge de la douleur postopératoire après la reconstruction du ligament croisé antérieur (RLCA). Nous avons comparé les scores de douleur et le recours aux analgésiques chez des patients soumis à une RLCA simple faisceau (SF) ou double faisceau (DF) durant la période postopératoire immédiate. La douleur et l'utilisation des analgésiques ont aussi été analysées en rapport avec l'anesthésie utilisée, rachidienne ou générale, dans les 2 types de chirurgie. MÉTHODES: Nous avons évalué 2 cohortes distinctes de patients soumis à une RLCA primaire, SF et DF, pendant les 14 premiers jours postopératoires. Les patients ont consigné leurs scores de douleur et leur utilisation d'analgésiques dans des carnets de bord standard. La douleur était évaluée au moyen d'une échelle analogique visuelle (ÉAV) de 100 mm. Les analgésiques étaient regroupés sous 3 catégories, soit opiacés oraux, antiinflammatoires non stéroïdiens oraux et acétaminophène. RÉSULTATS: En tout, 88 patients soumis à une RLCA SF et 41 à une RLCA DF ont été inclus dans l'étude. Nous n'avons observé aucune différence significative quant au score de douleur à l'ÉAV entre les cohortes. Malgré des scores de douleur similaires à l'ÉAV, la cohorte soumise à l'intervention DF a utilisé significativement plus d'opiacés et autres analgésiques (p = 0.011). Comparativement aux patients sous anesthésie générale, les patients soumis à l'intervention DF sous anesthésie rachidienne ont éprouvé significativement moins de douleur au cours des 14 premiers jours postopératoires (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Tous les patients qui ont subi une RLCA ont obtenu un soulagement adéquat de leur douleur durant la période postopératoire initiale. Les patients de la cohorte DF ont éprouvé davantage de douleur, comme en témoigne la différence significative de consommation d'opiacés et d'acétaminophène comparativement à la cohorte SF. Les patients qui ont subi une anesthésie rachidienne ont éprouvé moins de douleur pendant la période postopératoire immédiate, comparativement aux patients sous anesthésie générale.

Purpose: To compare a large cohort of patients who underwent remnant-sparing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (rACLR) with a matched group of patients who underwent anatomic single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) with respect to clinical laxity, patient-reported outcomes, and functional testing. Methods: Patients who underwent rACLR between January 2010 and December 2015 were matched according to age, sex, body mass index, and graft type to patients who underwent ACLR. The primary outcome measure was the ACL Quality of Life (ACL-QOL) score at final follow-up of 24 months. Secondary outcomes included functional tests and clinical laxity measurements at 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively. Concurrent intra-articular pathology at the time of surgery and postoperative complications were also recorded. Statistical analyses included the dependent t test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: A total of 210 rACLR patients were successfully matched to a corresponding cohort of 210 ACLR patients. There were no statistically significant differences in ACL Quality of Life (ACL-QOL) or functional testing results between the groups; however, scores in both groups showed a steady and statistically significant improvement over time. A statistically significant difference was noted with respect to the Lachman test findings, favoring the rACLR cohort (Z = -2.79, P = .005); no between-group difference was seen for the pivot-shift test (Z = -0.36, P = .72). The rACLR group had a significantly lower rate of concurrent meniscal and chondral injury. There was no difference in complications between the groups (Z = -0.49, P = .63). Conclusions: There was no difference in patient-reported or functional testing outcomes in patients undergoing remnant-sparing compared with anatomic single-bundle ACLR. There was, however, a significantly lower rate of positive Lachman test findings after rACLR. Furthermore, the rate of concurrent meniscal and chondral pathology was lower in the rACLR group. OBJECTIVE: Osteochondral allograft transplantation is a procedure to treat focal osteochondral lesions (OCLs), but is limited by tissue availability, the quality of transplanted tissue, and inconsistent storage protocols. The objective of this study was to assess the clinical outcomes of a novel tissue procurement, storage, and quality control protocol in treating OCLs. DESIGN: Prospective case series. Donor cadaveric tissue was processed, stored, and the tissue quality analyzed using the unique tissue preservation protocol developed at our institution. Advanced cross-sectional imaging was used to size match donor tissue with recipient patients. Osteochondral allografts were transplanted using the Arthrex Allograft OATS. Patients were evaluated with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), visual analog scale (VAS), and 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) preoperatively and at 1 year and 2 years postoperatively. RESULTS: Twenty patients (17 knees, 3 shoulders) were included in the study. There was a significant improvement in the following scores: overall WOMAC score, WOMAC function and pain subcategories; KOOS pain, knee-related symptoms, activities of daily living, sports and recreation, and quality of life; SF-36 physical functioning, physical role, pain, and social functioning subcategories; and VAS at all time points postoperatively. There was a significant improvement in WOMAC stiffness at 2 years postoperatively. There were 2 failures, defined by graft subsidence and persistent pain requiring reoperation. CONCLUSION: The protocol developed at our institution for OAT resulted in significant clinical improvement in patients with OCLs and is an improvement on existing tissue storage techniques.

The analysis of the phylogenetic structure of communities can help reveal contemporary ecological interactions, as well as link community ecology with biogeography and the study of character evolution. The number of studies employing this broad approach has increased to the point where comparison of their results can now be used to highlight successes and deficiencies in the approach, and to detect emerging patterns in community organization. We review studies of the phylogenetic structure of communities of different major taxa and trophic levels, across different spatial and phylogenetic scales, and using different metrics and null models. Twenty-three of 39 studies (59%) find evidence for phylogenetic clustering in contemporary communities, but terrestrial and/or plant systems are heavily over-represented among published studies. Experimental investigations, although uncommon at present, hold promise for unravelling mechanisms underlying the phylogenetic community structure patterns observed in community surveys. We discuss the relationship between metrics of phylogenetic clustering and tree balance and explore the various emerging biases in taxonomy and pitfalls of scale. Finally, we look beyond one-dimensional metrics of phylogenetic structure towards multivariate descriptors that better capture the variety of ecological behaviours likely to be exhibited in communities of species with hundreds of millions of years of independent evolution.

Host-associated differentiation (HAD) appears to be an important driver of diversification in the hyperdiverse phytophagous and parasitoid insects. The gallmaking moth Gnorimoschema gallaesolidaginis has undergone HAD on two sympatric goldenrods (Solidago), and HAD has also been documented in its parasitoid Copidosoma gelechiae, with the intriguing suggestion that differentiation has proceeded independently in multiple populations. We tested this suggestion with analysis of Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) markers for C. gelechiae collections from the midwestern and northeastern United States and eastern Canada. AFLP data were consistent with the existence of HAD, with between-host F(ST) significant before Bonferroni correction in two of seven sympatric populations. amova analysis strongly rejected a model of HAD with a single historical origin, and thus supported the repeated-HAD hypothesis. Copidosoma gelechiae shows significant host-associated divergence at a number of allozyme loci (Stireman et al., 2006), but only weak evidence via AFLPs for genome-wide differentiation, suggesting that this species is at a very early stage of HAD.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of triple-lumen central venous catheters coated with a combination product of chlorhexidine and silver sulfadiazine (CSS) in reducing the incidence of local catheter infection and catheter-related bacteremia. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled trial. SETTING: The surgical intensive care units in a university hospital. PATIENTS: All patients who needed central venous catheterization were randomized to receive either an uncoated triple-lumen catheter (n = 157) or a catheter coated with CSS (n = 151). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Catheters were removed when no longer needed or suspected as a cause of infection. The tip and a 5-cm segment of the intradermal portion of the catheter were cultured semiquantitatively. Blood cultures were obtained when clinically indicated. The remaining segment of catheters coated with CSS were cut and incubated on an agar plate with strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus. Zone of inhibition was determined 24 hours later. Data were analyzed by survival and logistic multivariate regression methods. RESULTS: Catheters coated with CSS were effective in reducing the rate of significant bacterial growth on either the tip or intradermal segment (40%) compared with control catheters (52%; P = .04). However, there was no difference in the incidence of catheter-related bacteremia (3.8% [uncoated] vs 3.3% [coated]; P = .81). In vitro activity of catheters with CSS against S aureus was evident up to 25 days but activity against Enterococcus dissipated more quickly over time and was absent by day 4. The most common colonizing organisms were coagulase-negative staphylococcus and enterococcus. Variables that were associated with a significant amount of growth on the tip or intradermal segment were a duration of catheterization of longer than 7 days, jugular insertion site, and the absence of a CSS coating. The use of a guidewire when the catheter was removed was associated with a lower risk of significant bacterial growth. CONCLUSIONS: The use of CSS reduces the incidence of significant bacterial growth on either the tip or intradermal segments of coated triple-lumen catheters but has no effect on the incidence of catheter-related bacteremia. In this patient population, catheters coated with CSS provide no additional benefit over uncoated catheters.

If we are to plan conservation strategies that minimize the loss of evolutionary history through human-caused extinctions, we must understand how this loss is related to phylogenetic patterns in current extinction risks and past speciation rates. Nee & May (1997, Science 278, 692-694) showed that for a randomly evolving clade (i) a single round of random extinction removed relatively little evolutionary history, and (ii) extinction management (choosing which taxa to sacrifice) offered only marginal improvement. However, both speciation rates and extinction risks vary across lineages within real clades. We simulated evolutionary trees with phylogenetically patterned speciation rates and extinction risks (closely related lineages having similar rates and risks) and then subjected them to several biologically informed models of extinction. Increasing speciation rate variation increases the extinction-management pay-off. When extinction risks vary among lineages but are uncorrelated with speciation rates, extinction removes more history (compared with random trees), but the difference is small. When extinction risks vary and are correlated with speciation rates, history loss can dramatically increase (negative correlation) or decrease (positive correlation) with speciation rate variation. The loss of evolutionary history via human-caused extinctions may therefore be more severe, yet more manageable, than first suggested.

The effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on cardiac protein kinase C (PKC) activation and cardiac depression was evaluated. Guinea pigs (n = 44) received intraperitoneal injections of saline or Escherichia coli LPS (2 mg/kg). Left atria were harvested 16 h later and suspended in oxygenated low calcium (1 mM) (n = 24) or high calcium (5 mM) (n = 20) 30 degrees C Krebs-Henseleit buffer. Atria were treated with H-7 (n = 23), a PKC inhibitor, or vehicle (n = 21). Contractile responses to changes in preload and stimulating frequency, in the resting and potentiated states, and to escalating doses of phenylephrine were measured. PKC activation in ventricular muscle was also determined. LPS activated ventricular PKC (p < .05) but treatment with H-7 failed to reverse LPS-induced atrial dysfunction in the low calcium buffer. Contractile function in the potentiated state indicated that LPS appears to interfere with calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). The contractile response to phenylephrine was markedly attenuated in atria harvested from endotoxic animals. These data indicate that LPS-induced cardiac depression is mediated, in part, by alterations in SR calcium release. LPS activates cardiac PKC but a causal relationship among LPS, PKC, and cardiac dysfunction remains to be established.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of the liver to simultaneously assess oxygen content in combination with tissue pH, an indicator of anaerobic metabolism. Six anesthetized swine were subjected to 45 min of hemorrhagic shock followed by resuscitation with blood and crystalloid. Calibration models between NIR spectra and reference measurements of tissue pH, hepatic venous oxygen saturation (S(V)O2), and blood hemoglobin concentration (Hb) were developed using partial least-squares regression. Model accuracy was assessed using cross validation. The average correlation (R2) between NIR and reference measurements was 0.87, 0.68, and 0.93, respectively for pH, Hb, and S(V)O2. Estimated accuracy, the root mean squared deviation between spectral, and reference measurements was 0.03 pH units, 0.3 g/dL, and 6%. NIR determination of hepatic oxygen content and tissue pH during shock and resuscitation demonstrated that there can be a variance between hepatic venous oxygenation and regional tissue acidosis. NIR spectroscopy provides a technique to explore the implications of post-shock depression of tissue pH and evaluate new methods of resuscitation.

Necrotizing tracheobronchitis (NT) associated with conventional mechanical ventilation or high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) is a lesion reported most often in neonates. In most cases, a specific cause is not identified. We describe a case of NT in an adult that occurred during HFJV and was attributable to inadequate humidification.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to compare the efficacy of ultrahigh frequency ventilation (UHFV) (frequencies > 3 Hz) with respect to oxygenation, airway pressures, and hemodynamic parameters in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who were not responding to conventional ventilation. DESIGN: We used a prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized study design in which each patient served as his own control. SETTING: Three university-affiliated, tertiary-care medical centers participated. PATIENTS: Persons aged 16 to 79 years old with ARDS and unresponsive to conventional ventilation, as defined by a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved protocol, were included. INTERVENTIONS: Ninety patients who were not responding to conventional ventilation were changed to UHFV using a microcomputer-controlled device. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: The patient's blood gas, hemodynamic, and airway pressure variables were measured just before, and at 1 and 24 h after the switch to UHFV. We demonstrated clinically significant improvements in arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) and reductions in peak and mean inspiratory pressures. CONCLUSIONS: In a multicenter study, UHFV improved respiratory gas exchange and reduced airway pressure variables at both 1 h and 24 h after the onset of UHFV when compared with conventional ventilation just prior to the change and without hemodynamic deterioration, in patients with severe ARDS.

Three children developed the congenital varicella syndrome following a maternal varicella infection during the second trimester of pregnancy. Systemic findings included a bulbar palsy, mild hemiparesis, cicatricial skin lesions, developmental delay, and learning difficulties. Ocular findings included chorioretinitis, atrophy and hypoplasia of the optic discs, a congenital cataract, and Horner's syndrome. Electroretinograms and pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials recorded from the four eyes with chorioretinitis were attenuated and degraded. Two of the children had been misdiagnosed as having congenital toxoplasmosis. Chorioretinal scars probably occur more frequently with the congenital varicella syndrome than has been previously recognized and should be included in the differential diagnosis of congenital chorioretinal scars. Hypoplasia of the optic disc may develop after an intrauterine varicella infection during the 16th week of gestation. Children with the congenital varicella syndrome should be examined by an ophthalmologist to exclude ocular abnormalities. These abnormalities are often subtle and difficult to diagnose correctly.

AIMS: To develop a new typing system for group B streptococci based on 35S-methionine-labelled protein profiles of bacterial proteins. METHODS: 377 clinical isolates of group B streptococci were examined by incorporation of 35S-methionine into bacterial proteins under strict anaerobic conditions. After sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, autoradiography was performed. The patterns produced were visually analysed and categorised into clusters of organisms based on the pattern of band production between 32-46 kilodaltons. RESULTS: 294 of the typed strains classified into seven different groups designated a-g. 32 strains failed to incorporate 35S-methionine sufficiently to be grouped and 11 strains did not fall into one of the seven identified groups. Typability, reproducibility, and discrimination of the system was evident. CONCLUSIONS: This typing system may help to distinguish between colonising and invasive strains of the organism.

Bone marrow smears from 15 patients with multiple myeloma, 15 patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and 15 control subjects were examined for the presence of cytoplasmic 5'nucleotidase (c5NT) in plasma cells. Plasma cell positivity for c5NT (mean and 95% confidence interval) in patients with multiple myeloma numbered 46.4% (38.0-54.8%), in those with MGUS it was 15.3% (11.1-19.6%), and in control subjects it was 1.2% (0.3-2.1%). These findings indicate that c5NT can be used to differentiate benign from malignant monoclonal gammopathies.

One hundred and seventy two strains of Clostridium difficile isolated from 62 patients with antibiotic associated diarrhoea or pseudomembranous colitis were analysed for the production of toxins A and B and typed using 35S-methionine labelling followed by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). There was a correlation between production of toxins A and B and the type of C difficile. One hundred and forty four of 172 strains were either high or low producers of both toxins. Toxins were not detected in 28 of 172 strains. Types A and Y were consistently non-toxin producers; types B and E were high toxin producers. Type X, the epidemic strain, showed variable toxin production. Symptoms of 49 patients with haematological malignant pathology who were part of a documented outbreak of antibiotic associated diarrhoea, were analysed in relation to toxin production and type of the clinical strains isolated. In general, there was a correlation between symptoms of antibiotic associated diarrhoea, the type of C difficile, and its potential for producing toxins.

AIMS: To compare two methods for the rapid detection of intrapartum vaginal carriage of group B streptococci (Streptococcus agalactiae) with standard culture techniques and to establish their suitability for routine use. METHODS: Vaginal swabs from 266 patients in labour were incubated in glucose broth in an anaerobic atmosphere for four to six hours. The Wellcogen Strep B latex particle agglutination test kit was subsequently used for antigen detection. In the second part of the study swabs from 117 women were assessed for the presence of group B streptococci using the ICON STREP B immuno-concentration assay (Hybritech). Both methods were compared with standard semiquantitative culture on Columbia horse blood agar and Islam's medium. RESULTS: In the first study vaginal carriage of group B streptococci was shown in 38 of 266 (14.3%) patients by culture. Latex particle agglutination with the Wellcogen kit detected 30 of these positive results (sensitivity 78.9%, specificity 100%). In those patients with moderate to heavy colonisation (> 10(4) colony forming units per millilitre) antigen was detected in all (26/26) culture positive patients (sensitivity 100%, specificity 100%). In the second study 16 (13.7%) patients were culture positive. The ICON test detected 11 positive results (sensitivity 68.8%, specificity 100%) and for heavy colonisation (10(5) cfu/ml) detected nine of nine cases (sensitivity 100%, specificity 100%). The ICON test took 10 to 15 minutes to perform. CONCLUSION: These tests are potentially useful for the rapid detection of group B streptococci vaginal colonisation in labour, particularly heavy colonisation. Both tests are insufficiently sensitive to replace standard culture methods.

A 61 year old woman presented with back pain and clinical signs of meningitis. Pleocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid was found, but although Streptococcus pneumoniae was cultured from her blood it failed to grow from the cerebrospinal fluid. An echocardiogram detected vegetations on the mitral valve and a lesion at S1/S2 was demonstrated on a bone scan. Treatment for one month with benzylpenicillin (1200 mg four hourly) was successful for both the cardiac and neurological components of her infection, but her back pain only resolved after treatment was changed to clindamycin. The clinical presentation and metastatic spread of the S pneumoniae infection is much more commonly seen in the context of S aureus endocarditis. It is rare for the pneumococcus to be associated with endocarditis and when it is mortality is usually high. This case shows the metastatic potential of the organism and the requirement for appropriate antibiotics with regard not only to the sensitivity of the organism, but also for the site of infection.

AIM: To develop a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the specific detection of the C protein gene in strains of group B Streptococcus. METHODS: A single primer pair derived from the nucleotide sequence of the IgA binding beta antigen of the C protein complex permitted the specific amplification of a 592 base pair DNA fragment from the C protein gene. After 35 cycles of amplification this product could be detected by agarose gel electrophoresis. Southern blot hybridisation confirmed that this product was the C protein gene. RESULTS: PCR detected the C protein gene in 75 (63%) of 119 strains of group B streptococci analysed. The product was not detected in other Gram positive organisms, showing that this PCR assay was highly specific. The sensitivity of the assay was satisfactory to a dilution of 1 in 10,000 of extracted DNA. CONCLUSIONS: The C protein of group B streptococci is associated with neonatal sepsis. The specific detection of the C protein gene by PCR may help identify which strains are likely to be associated with infection by the organism.
