RESUMO

The SNO+ Collaboration reports the first evidence of reactor antineutrinos in a Cherenkov detector. The nearest nuclear reactors are located 240 km away in Ontario, Canada. This analysis uses events with energies lower than in any previous analysis with a large water Cherenkov detector. Two analytical methods are used to distinguish reactor antineutrinos from background events in 190 days of data and yield consistent evidence for antineutrinos with a combined significance of 3.5σ.

RESUMO

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is the quantification and interpretation of drug concentrations in blood to optimize pharmacotherapy. It considers the interindividual variability of pharmacokinetics and thus enables personalized pharmacotherapy. In psychiatry and neurology, patient populations that may particularly benefit from TDM are children and adolescents, pregnant women, elderly patients, individuals with intellectual disabilities, patients with substance abuse disorders, forensic psychiatric patients or patients with known or suspected pharmacokinetic abnormalities. Non-response at therapeutic doses, uncertain drug adherence, suboptimal tolerability, or pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions are typical indications for TDM. However, the potential benefits of TDM to optimize pharmacotherapy can only be obtained if the method is adequately integrated in the clinical treatment process. To supply treating physicians and laboratories with valid information on TDM, the TDM task force of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Neuropsychopharmakologie und Pharmakopsychiatrie (AGNP) issued their first guidelines for TDM in psychiatry in 2004. After an update in 2011, it was time for the next update. Following the new guidelines holds the potential to improve neuropsychopharmacotherapy, accelerate the recovery of many patients, and reduce health care costs.

RESUMO

Precise measurements of K-shell internal conversion coefficients (ICCs) are being used to determine the best method for calculating these coefficients. A recent result for the M4 transition from 193Irm has been refined, demonstrating conclusively that the atomic vacancy created by the ejected electron must be properly accounted for in the calculation of ICCs. Measurements of additional cases are discussed.

RESUMO

A method is described for the separation of early and intermediate myeloid cells from human bone marrow aspirates. This easily performed procedure is based on preferential binding of lymphoid and late myeloid cells to DEAE-Cellulose-Sephadex G-25 columns.

RESUMO

Human bone marrow fibroblasts (BMF) were grown in vitro from normal (N) subjects and patients with aplastic anemia (AA). Growth studies in vitro revealed that both the N-BMF and AA-BMF had a logarithmic growth phase of eight days. Population doubling time for six of the 12 N-BMF and seven of the 12 AA-BMF was greater than 50 h. Five of the 12 AA-BMF studied in contrast to only two of the 12 N-BMF had a population doubling time of less than 50 h. The remaining four N-BMF had a population doubling time of greater than 100 h. During a similar duration in the logarithmic phase of growth, the AA-BMF underwent an average of 2.499 population doublings in comparison to 1.586 doublings by N-BMF (P = less than 0.01). The AA-BMF grew in multiple layers compared with the N-BMF, which usually grew as a monolayer. At the end of the logarithmic phase of growth, the AA-BMF also had a significantly higher number of cells per dish than the N-BMF (P = 0.02 on analysis of variance and covariance). These data suggest that a subgroup of AA-BMF grows faster than N-BMF and that the AA-BMF lack cell-to-cell inhibition. Testosterone, 3 alpha-etiocholanolone, and dexamethasone at 1 X 10(-8)M concentration, a physiological concentration, stimulated the growth of N-BMF as evidenced by increase in cell numbers and radioactive thymidine (3H-TdR) uptake. While dexamethasone had a stimulating effect on growth of N-BMF, it suppressed the growth of AA-BMF. Specific binding of radioactive dexamethasone (3H-dexa) was determined both for the N-BMF and AA-BMF. Specific binding sites for dexamethasone (Bmax) present on the N-BMF ranged from 460 to 770 fmol/mg protein). Bmax for AA-BMF was low (27-215 fmol/mg protein). In addition, the dissociation constant (Kd) was ten times lower for AA-BMF (1.0 X 10(-7) M) than for N-BMF (1.1 X 10(-8) M). The observations on the growth studies, the paradoxical response to dexamethasone, and the difference in the number of binding sites for dexamethasone indicate that the marrow fibroblasts from patients with aplastic anemia are abnormal.

RESUMO

A 28 year old white man with hemophilia A had, for several years, been successfully maintained on a home care program utilizing self-administration of factor VIII concentrates, but one such infusion resulted in severe anaphylaxis. An immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated hypersensitivity response was demonstrated by (1) the release of histamine from the patient's basophils in vitro upon challenge with several different lots of factor VIII concentrate; (2) immediate cutaneous response to commercial factor VIII, factor IX and cryoprecipitate; and (3) measurement of IgE antibodies against a commercial factor VIII preparation. A subsequent life-threatening hemorrhage required cautious infusion of another commercial lot of factor VIII concentrate. Despite pretreatment with antiallergic drugs and attempted desensitization, a moderately severe anaphylactic reaction was observed.

RESUMO

Twenty-nine patients with aplastic anemia and 11 patients with myelofibrosis were evaluated with indium-111 chloride bone-marrow imaging, ferrokinetics, and bone-marrow core biopsies. There was good correlation between the erythrocyte cellularity of the marrow and the In-111 bone-marrow scan grades in most patients. In some, the overall scan grade tended to underestimate the erythroid elements because the core biopsy had been taken from the area of the greatest radionuclide concentration on the scan. In patients with aplastic anemia, there was good correlation between the plasma iron clearance t1/2 and the scan grade. Less agreement was found in the comparison between the Fe-59 sacral and organ counts and the red-cell iron utilization. In patients with myelofibrosis, there was poor correlation between the surface counts over the sacrum and the red-cell iron utilization. Plasma iron clearances were abnormally short and were unrelated to the transferrin saturation levels. Eighteen patients were studied several times to evaluate their responses to steroid therapy. In all, there was good correlation between the bone-marrow imaging, the erythrocyte cellularity, ferrokinetics, and the patient's response to therapy. Indium-111 bone-marrow imaging is useful both in evaluating marrow erythroid activity and in following the response to therapy in patients with these diseases.

RESUMO

In 1985 at the cemetery in Embu near Sao Paulo, Brazil, parts of a skeleton were exhumed, and now these parts have been examined to determine whether they are the remains of the corpse of Dr. Josef Mengele, the camp doctor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The osteometrical and osteological findings ascertained correspond completely and consistently without contradiction with all the available personal data of Josef Mengele. Through a method of electronic visual mixing for the identification of the skull, it was determined that all the authentic pictures available used for comparison correspond definitely and consistently to the exhumed skull.

RESUMO

Previously we used relative and absolute efficiency measurements combined with Monte Carlo calculations to define the efficiency of an HPGe gamma-ray detector with 0.2% accuracy from 50 to 1400 keV. This work has been extended to 4.8 MeV with measurements of relative efficiencies from 24Na, 56Co, and 66Ga sources. The combined results of experiment and calculation yield an efficiency curve up to 3.5 MeV with 0.4% accuracy. Single- and double-escape peak contributions also agree with calculation if positron annihilation-in-flight is incorporated.

RESUMO

With the goal of measuring precise gamma-ray intensities for short-lived (< 5 s) accelerator-produced activities, we have calibrated the efficiency of an HPGe detector between 53 and 1836keV to sub-percent precision with a combination of source measurements and Monte Carlo calculations. Using known or independently measured detector dimensions, we have achieved both relative and absolute agreement (the latter, to 0.1%) between the calculated and measured efficiencies with only two adjustable detector parameters, the thicknesses of the contact dead layers.

RESUMO

In a double blind-trial two examiners reconstructed the soft tissue on lifelike casts of 12 skulls. They worked independently after having been given information about age, sex and constitution of the person in question and following a reconstruction plan based on the morphology of the skull. The comparison of the completed reconstruction with each other chiefly showed approximate to far-reaching degrees of resemblance and conformity. The comparison of reconstructions and photographs of the individuals also showed predominantly approximate to far-reaching likeness of the general impression, and, with one exception, at least little likeness was achieved. The reconstruction of soft tissue on the skull proved to be a relatively useful method of identifying unknown skulls, provided information on the colour and length of the hair, and possibly on the hairstyle as well, is at the examiner's disposal.

RESUMO

Nuclear spin tomography since its beginnings in the seventies has steadily gained in importance as a method of examination in medical diagnostics as it produces a picture. In the field of forensic medicine the NMR technique as used for anatomic-anthropologic issues attempting to identify skulls this is a valuable supplement to an extension of the existing methods of investigation. The results of a measurement of the thickness of soft facial tissue in a live test person is shown as compared to measures obtained by sonography.

RESUMO

We performed an improved search for nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillation with the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using the full data sample of 9.2 x 10(19) protons on target. No evidence for a nu(e) appearance signal was found, and we set bounds on the nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillation parameters. At Deltam(2)=2.8 x 10(-3) eV(2), the best-fit value of the K2Knu(mu) disappearance analysis, we set an upper limit of sin(2)2theta(mue) < 0.13 at a 90% confidence level.
