RESUMO

Understanding the evolution of local structure and mobility of disordered glassy materials induced by external stress is critical in modeling their mechanical deformation in the nonlinear regime. Several techniques have shown acceleration of molecular mobility of various amorphous glasses under macroscopic tensile deformation, but it remains a major challenge to visualize such a relationship at the nanoscale. Here, we employ a new approach based on atomic force microscopy in nanorheology mode for quantifying the local dynamic responses of a polymer glass induced by nanoscale compression. By increasing the compression level from linear elastic to plastic deformation, we observe an increase in the mechanical loss tangent (tan δ), evidencing the enhancement of polymer mobility induced by large stress. Notably, tan δ images directly reveal the preferential effect of the large compression on the dynamic acceleration of nanoscale heterogeneities with initially slow mobility, which is clearly different from that induced by increasing temperature.

Cubic liquid marbles (LMs) were fabricated by using various epoxy monomers as internal liquids and millimeter-sized polymer plates as stabilizers. Successively, cubic polymer particles were synthesized via solvent-free polyaddition reactions by exposing the cubic LMs to NH3 vapor used as a curing agent. The effect of the solubility parameters (SPs) for the epoxy monomers on the formation of the cubic polymer particles was investigated. As a result, we succeeded in fabricating cubic polymer particles reflecting the shapes of the original LMs by using epoxy monomers with SP values of 23.70-21.66 (MPa)1/2. Furthermore, the shapes of the LMs could be controlled on demand (e.g., pentahedral and rectangular) by control of the number of polymer plates per LM and/or coalescence of the LMs, resulting in fabrication of polymer particles with shapes reflecting those of the LMs.

Sudden failure of a mine tailing dam occurred in the municipality of Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on January 25, 2019. Approximately 12 million cubic meters of mine tailings discharged into the Paraopeba River, producing strong environmental and societal impacts, mainly due to a massive increase in turbidity (occasionally exceeding 50,000 Nephelometric Turbidity Units [NTU] (CPRM 2019). Remote sensing is a well-established tool for quantifying spatial patterns of turbidity. However, a few empirical models have been developed to map turbidity in rivers impacted by mine tailings. Thus, this study aimed to develop an empirical model capable of producing turbidity estimates based on images from the Sentinel-2 satellite, using the Paraopeba River as the study area. We found that river turbidity was most strongly correlated with the sensor's near-infrared band (NIR) (band 8). Thus, we built an empirical single-band model using an exponential function with an (R2 of 0.91) to characterize the spatial-temporal variation of turbidity based on satellite observations of NIR reflectance. Although the role of discharged tailings in the seasonal variation of turbidity is not well understood, the proposed model enabled the monitoring of turbidity variations in the Paraopeba River associated with seasonal resuspension or deposition of mine tailings. Our study shows the capability of single-band models to quantify seasonal variations in turbidity in rivers impacted by mine tailing pollution.

INTRODUCTION: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, telemedicine has been regarded as a method for providing safe access to healthcare. Here, we explored the experiences of individuals using telemedicine in Hong Kong during the COVID-19 pandemic to understand their risk perceptions and preparedness measures. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of telemedicine users of private clinic-based COVID-19 testing services from 6 April to 11 May 2020. All users were invited to complete an anonymous online survey regarding COVID-19 risk perception and preparedness measures. The results of the survey were compared with the findings of a previous territory-wide survey. RESULTS: In total, 141 of 187 telemedicine users agreed to participate; the response rate was 75.4%. Of the participants, 95.1% (116/122) believed that telemedicine consultations were useful. Nearly half of the participants (49.0%) agreed or strongly agreed that telemedicine consultations were appropriate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most participants believed that telemedicine consultations could perform the functions of 'health protection, promotion and disease prevention' (73.6%) and 'diagnosis' (64.0%). Concerning the choice of telemedicine provider, almost all participants (99.2%) were willing to consult medical doctors; more than half of the participants (54.1%) were willing to consult registered nurses, but only 13.1% were willing to consult non-clinical staff who had been trained to provide telemedicine services. CONCLUSION: The use of telemedicine for screening and patient education can be encouraged during the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to characterize urogenital symptoms in women with and without constipation, and by severity of constipation. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at a pelvic floor disorder center in a tertiary healthcare facility from May 2007 through August 2019 and completed an intake questionnaire were included. We collected demographic, physical exam data and quality of life outcomes. The Urinary Distress Inventory (UDI-6) was used to assess urogenital symptoms. Women with constipation completed the Constipation Severity Instrument (CSI). We excluded women with a history of a bowel resection, inflammatory bowel disease, or pelvic organ prolapse symptoms. The cohort was then divided into two groups, constipated and non-constipated, and the prevalence and severity of urogenital-associated symptoms were compared. A secondary analysis was made among constipated subjects stratified by constipation severity based on CSI scores. RESULTS: During the study period, 875 women (59.5%) had chronic constipation. Women with chronic constipation were more likely to experience urogenital symptoms, such as dyspareunia, urinary hesitancy, and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying (all p < 0.05). Moreover, on univariate analysis, women with high CSI scores (75 percentile or higher) were found to have higher UDI-6 scores, increased bladder splinting, pad use, urinary frequency and dyspareunia while on multivariate analysis higher UDI score, increased bladder splinting, urinary frequency and dyspareunia were significantly associated (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: We found that the presence and severity of chronic constipation worsened the degree of bother from urogenital symptoms. Given that chronic constipation can modulate urogenital symptoms, our study suggests that pelvic floor specialists should assess the presence and severity of urogenital and bowel symptoms to provide comprehensive care.

Viable aerosols in the airflow may increase the risk of occupants contracting diseases. Natural ventilation is common in buildings and is accompanied by re-entry airflow during the ventilation process. If the re-entry airflow contains toxic or infectious species, it may cause potential harm to residents. One of the Covid-19 outbreaks occurred in a public residential building at Luk Chuen House (LC-House) in Hong Kong. It is highly suspected that the outbreak of the disease is related to the re-entry airflow. The study attempts to explain and discuss possible causes of the outbreak. In order to understand the impact of airflow on the outbreak, a public residential building similar to LC-House was used in the study. Two measurements M - I and M - II with the same settings were conducted for a sampling unit in the corridor under low and strong wind conditions respectively. The sampling unit and the tracer gas carbon dioxide (CO2) were used to simulate the index unit and infectious contaminated airflow respectively. The CO2 concentrations of the unit and corridor were measured simultaneously. Two models of Traditional Single-zone model (TSZ-model) and New Dual-zone model (NDZ-model) were used in the analysis. By comparing the ACH values obtained from the two models, it is indicated that the re-entry airflow of the unit is related to the corridor wind speeds and this provides a reasonable explanation for the outbreak in LC-House, and believes that the results can help understand the recent frequent cluster outbreaks in other residential buildings.

Capillary-channeled polymer (C-CP) fibers are demonstrated as a selective stationary phase for phosphopeptide analysis via LC-MS. Taking advantage of the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine under alkaline conditions, a simple system involving a dilute aqueous solution of 0.2% w/v dopamine hydrochloride in 0.15% w/v TRIS buffer, pH 8.5 was utilized to coat polydopamine onto nylon 6 C-CP fibers. Confirmation of the polydopamine coating on the fibers (nylon-PDA) was made through attenuated total reflection-FTIR (ATR-FTIR) analysis. Imaging using SEM was also performed to examine the morphology and topography of the nylon-PDA. Subsequent loading of Fe3+ to the nylon-PDA matrix was confirmed by SEM/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). The Fe3+ -bound nylon-PDA fibers packed in a microbore column format were tested in the off-line preconcentration of phosphopeptides from a 1:100 mixture of ß-casein/BSA digests for MALDI-TOF analysis. The packed column was also installed onto an HPLC system as a platform for the online sample clean-up and enrichment of phosphopeptides from a 1:1000 mixture of ß-casein/BSA protein digests that were determined by subsequent ESI-MS analysis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related osteoporosis is a major complication in patients with CKD, conferring a higher risk of adverse outcomes. We found that among those with diabetic kidney disease, this complication increased the risk of incident frailty, an important mediator of adverse outcomes. INTRODUCTION: Renal osteodystrophy and chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related osteoporosis increases complications for patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Since musculoskeletal degeneration is central to frailty development, we investigated the relationship between baseline osteoporosis and the subsequent frailty risk in patients with DKD. METHODS: From the Longitudinal Cohort of Diabetes Patients in Taiwan (n = 840,000), we identified 12,027 patients having DKD with osteoporosis and 24,054 propensity score-matched controls having DKD but without osteoporosis. The primary endpoint was incident frailty on the basis of a modified FRAIL scale. Patients were prospectively followed-up until the development of endpoints or the end of this study. The Kaplan-Meier technique and Cox proportional hazard regression were used to analyze the association between osteoporosis at baseline and incident frailty in these patients. RESULTS: The mean age of the DKD patients was 67.2 years, with 55.4% female and a 12.6% prevalence of osteoporosis at baseline. After 3.5 ± 2.2 years of follow up, the incidence rate of frailty in patients having DKD with osteoporosis was higher than that in DKD patients without (6.6 vs. 5.7 per 1000 patient-year, p = 0.04). A Cox proportional hazard regression showed that after accounting for age, gender, obesity, comorbidities, and medications, patients having DKD with osteoporosis had a significantly higher risk of developing frailty (hazard ratio, 1.19; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-1.38) than those without osteoporosis. CONCLUSIONS: CKD-related osteoporosis is associated with a higher risk of incident frailty in patients with DKD.

Dynamics of polymer chains near an interface with an inorganic material are believed to strongly affect the physical properties of polymers in nanocomposites and thin films. An effect of molecular architecture on the conformational relaxation behavior of polystyrene (PS) chains at the quartz interface using sum-frequency generation spectroscopy is reported here. The relaxation dynamics of chains in direct contact with the quartz interface is slower with a star-shaped architecture than that with its linear counterpart. The extent of the delay becomes more pronounced with increasing number of arms. This can be explained in terms of the superior interfacial activity to the quartz surface for the star-shaped PS.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed a heavy burden on health care systems and governments. Health literacy (HL) and eHealth literacy (as measured by the eHealth Literacy Scale [eHEALS]) are recognized as strategic public health elements but they have been underestimated during the pandemic. HL, eHEALS score, practices, lifestyles, and the health status of health care workers (HCWs) play crucial roles in containing the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the eHEALS and examine associations of HL and eHEALS scores with adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures, lifestyle changes, and suspected COVID-19 symptoms among HCWs during lockdown. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of 5209 HCWs from 15 hospitals and health centers across Vietnam from April 6 to April 19, 2020. Participants answered questions related to sociodemographics, HL, eHEALS, adherence to IPC procedures, behavior changes in eating, smoking, drinking, and physical activity, and suspected COVID-19 symptoms. Principal component analysis, correlation analysis, and bivariate and multivariate linear and logistic regression models were used to validate the eHEALS and examine associations. RESULTS: The eHEALS had a satisfactory construct validity with 8 items highly loaded on one component, with factor loadings ranked from 0.78 to 0.92 explaining 76.34% of variance; satisfactory criterion validity as correlated with HL (ρ=0.42); satisfactory convergent validity with high item-scale correlations (ρ=0.80-0.84); and high internal consistency (Cronbach α=.95). HL and eHEALS scores were significantly higher in men (unstandardized coefficient [B]=1.01, 95% CI 0.57-1.45, P<.001; B=0.72, 95% CI 0.43-1.00, P<.001), those with a better ability to pay for medication (B=1.65, 95% CI 1.25-2.05, P<.001; B=0.60, 95% CI 0.34-0.86, P<.001), doctors (B=1.29, 95% CI 0.73-1.84, P<.001; B 0.56, 95% CI 0.20-0.93, P=.003), and those with epidemic containment experience (B=1.96, 95% CI 1.56-2.37, P<.001; B=0.64, 95% CI 0.38-0.91, P<.001), as compared to their counterparts, respectively. HCWs with higher HL or eHEALS scores had better adherence to IPC procedures (B=0.13, 95% CI 0.10-0.15, P<.001; B=0.22, 95% CI 0.19-0.26, P<.001), had a higher likelihood of healthy eating (odds ratio [OR] 1.04, 95% CI 1.01-1.06, P=.001; OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.02-1.07, P=.002), were more physically active (OR 1.03, 95% CI 1.02-1.03, P<.001; OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.03-1.05, P<.001), and had a lower likelihood of suspected COVID-19 symptoms (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.96-0.98, P<.001; OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.95-0.98, P<.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The eHEALS is a valid and reliable survey tool. Gender, ability to pay for medication, profession, and epidemic containment experience were independent predictors of HL and eHEALS scores. HCWs with higher HL or eHEALS scores had better adherence to IPC procedures, healthier lifestyles, and a lower likelihood of suspected COVID-19 symptoms. Efforts to improve HCWs' HL and eHEALS scores can help to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and minimize its consequences.

In this paper we present modifications to previously published models for determining the specific volume of non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) in the subsurface at and near the groundwater table following a spill or leak from the soil surface. The modifications account for porous media having multimodal pore-size distributions as is often the case with tropical soils. Data from the literature are used to show that the use of multimodal pore-size distributions can lead to significantly different subsurface LNAPL specific volume predictions and possible LNAPL recovery rates, compared to when only unimodal pore-size distributions are considered. Differences of up to 200% are possible when the dual-porosity nature of the pore system is ignored, which can yield erroneous estimates of the time needed to remediate LNAPLs from contaminated areas when conventional systems are employed.

The interaction between Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (Fov) and Meloidogyne incognita (root-knot nematode) resulting in Fusarium wilt (FW) of cotton is well-known. Although Belonolaimus longicaudatus (sting nematode) can also interact with Fov and cause FW, it has long been believed that virtually all of the FW in Georgia is caused by the interaction of Fov with M. incognita. In recent years, FW has been reported more frequently in Georgia, which suggests that something affecting the disease complex may have changed. In 2015 and 2016, a survey of 27 Georgia cotton fields in 10 counties was conducted. At least 10 soil and stem samples per field were collected from individual plants showing symptoms of FW to quantify plant-parasitic nematode levels and identify Fov races. Fov race 1 was identified in all samples in 2015, but one sample also had the LA110 genotype and another sample also had the LA108 genotype. In 2016, all Fov races and genotypes found in 2015 were present, however, MDS-12 and LA127/140 also were found. Meloidogyne incognita was present in 18% of fields in 2015 and 40% in 2016, whereas B. longicaudatus was present in all fields in 2015 and 75% of fields in 2016. Regardless of whether they occurred separately or together, M. incognita and B. longicaudatus were present, respectively, in 18% and 55% of individual samples in 2015 and 40% and 51% in 2016. However, M. incognita without B. longicaudatus was found in 7% of samples in 2015 and 34% in 2016, whereas B. longicaudatus without M. incognita was found in 45% of samples in 2015 and 44% in 2016. BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that autism and schizophrenia share similarities in genetic, neuropsychological and behavioural aspects. Although both disorders are associated with theory of mind (ToM) impairments, a few studies have directly compared ToM between autism patients and schizophrenia patients. This study aimed to investigate to what extent high-functioning autism patients and schizophrenia patients share and differ in ToM performance. METHODS: Thirty high-functioning autism patients, 30 schizophrenia patients and 30 healthy individuals were recruited. Participants were matched in age, gender and estimated intelligence quotient. The verbal-based Faux Pas Task and the visual-based Yoni Task were utilised to examine first- and higher-order, affective and cognitive ToM. The task/item difficulty of two paradigms was examined using mixed model analyses of variance (ANOVAs). Multiple ANOVAs and mixed model ANOVAs were used to examine group differences in ToM. RESULTS: The Faux Pas Task was more difficult than the Yoni Task. High-functioning autism patients showed more severely impaired verbal-based ToM in the Faux Pas Task, but shared similar visual-based ToM impairments in the Yoni Task with schizophrenia patients. CONCLUSIONS: The findings that individuals with high-functioning autism shared similar but more severe impairments in verbal ToM than individuals with schizophrenia support the autism-schizophrenia continuum. The finding that verbal-based but not visual-based ToM was more impaired in high-functioning autism patients than schizophrenia patients could be attributable to the varied task/item difficulty between the two paradigms.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency departments (EDs) play an important role in the early identification and management of sepsis. Little is known about local EDs' processes of care for sepsis, adoption of international recommendations, and the impact of the new Sepsis-3 definitions. METHODS: Structured telephone interviews based on the United Kingdom Sepsis Trust 'Exemplar Standards for the Emergency Management of Sepsis' were conducted from January to August 2017 with nominated representatives of all responding public hospital EDs in Hong Kong, followed by a review of hospital/departmental sepsis guidelines by the investigators. RESULTS: Sixteen of the 18 public EDs in Hong Kong participated in the study. Among various time-critical medical emergencies such as major trauma, sepsis was perceived by the interviewees to be the leading cause of in-hospital mortality and the second most important preventable cause of death. However, only seven EDs reported having departmental guidelines on sepsis care, with four adopting the Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score or its modified versions. All responding EDs reported that antibiotics were stocked within their departments, and all EDs with sepsis guidelines mandated early intravenous antibiotic administration within 1 to 2 hours of detection. Reported major barriers to optimal sepsis care included lack of knowledge and experience, nursing human resources shortages, and difficulty identifying patients with sepsis in the ED setting. CONCLUSION: There are considerable variations in sepsis care among EDs in Hong Kong. More training, resources, and research efforts should be directed to early ED sepsis care, to improve patient outcomes.

The ecdysteroid biosynthetic pathway involves sequential enzymatic hydroxylations by a group of enzymes collectively known as Halloween gene proteins. Complete sequences for three Halloween genes, spook (Vdspo), disembodied (Vddib) and shade (Vdshd), were identified in varroa mites and sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses of predicted amino acid sequences for Halloween orthologues showed that the acarine orthologues were distantly associated with insect and crustacean clades indicating that acarine genes had more ancestral characters. The lack of orthologues or pseudogenes for remaining genes suggests these pathway elements had not evolved in ancestral arthropods. Vdspo transcript levels were highest in gut tissues, while Vddib transcript levels were highest in ovary-lyrate organs. In contrast, Vdshd transcript levels were lower overall but present in both gut and ovary-lyrate organs. All three transcripts were present in eggs removed from gravid female mites. A brood cell invasion assay was developed for acquiring synchronously staged mites. Mites within 4 h of entering a brood cell had transcript levels of all three that were not significantly different from mites on adult bees. These analyses suggest that varroa mites may be capable of modifying 7-dehydro-cholesterol precursor and hydroxylations of other steroid precursors, but whether the mites directly produce ecdysteroid precursors and products remains undetermined.

Although the formation of dynamic heterogeneities in glass-forming materials is believed to play an essential role in determining their properties as the glass transition is approached, direct imaging of these heterogeneities remains a challenge. Here, we report on a direct observation of nanoscale dynamic heterogeneities and their time evolution over ~10(3) s on the surface of a glassy polymer, polystyrene (PS), using atomic force microscopy with a 1 nm radius tip. The length scale of these heterogeneities was measured to be ~2.1 nm and the lifetime was determined to be ~10(2) s, in agreement with the length and time scales of heterogeneous dynamics reported for bulk polymers around the glass transition. These results are consistent with the existence of a very thin liquid-like layer at the glassy polymer surface. The validity of the method is confirmed by comparing the properties of surface dynamics of neat and plasticized films.
