RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential risk of schistosomiasis transmission so as to provide the evidence for formulating the control strategy. METHODS: Two villages were selected as the investigated sites in Chuxiong City and the risk of schistosomiasis transmission was evaluated by reviewing the data of schistosomiasis epidemic situation and prevention and control work, and carrying out the field survey for Oncomelania hupensis snail status, wild faeces, and schistosome infection of the population from 2015 to 2017. RESULTS: There was 1.49 hm2 area of snail habitats, with an average density of 0.54 snails/0.1 m2. The occurrence rate of frames with snails was 5.41%. No schistosome-infected snails were found. The positive rate of schistosomiasis serological tests of the residents was 3.36%, but the stool examination positive cases were not found. A total of 58 wild faeces samples were collected but no schistosome infested cases were found. The risk levels of schistosomiasis transmission in both villages were Grade III. CONCLUSIONS: Although Chuxiong City has been in a low risk state of schistosomiasis transmission, the density of snails is still high, and there is a risk of infection source importation. In the future, the infection source control and snail control should be strengthened.

RESUMO

This study was aimed to investigate the factors influencing long-term survival on patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia. Here, we present a single center retrospective study with long-term follow-up to explore the prognostic factors and a rationale of the using of ATRA, chemotherapy and As(2)O(3) in the treatment of newly diagnosed APL patients. In total, 222 patients, 184 achieved complete remission (CR) with the CR rate of 82.88% and 22 patients died during early induction therapy with the early-death-rate of 10%. Total 171 newly diagnosed APL patients entering CR were retrospectively analyzed from November 1989 to December 2004,with a median follow-up of 36 months (6-185 months). Univariate and multivariate analysis of eight factors potentially influencing survival and prognosis were carried out with Log-Rank and Cox regression method, including sex, age, initial WBC count, the level of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), first induction regimen, days from induction therapy to CR, post-remission therapy and the status of PML-RAR alpha fusion gene by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results showed that the estimated 5-year overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) were 80.9+/-4.0 and 71.0+/-4.0%, respectively. Univariate analyses showed that initial WBC count, first induction regimen, days from induction therapy to CR, post-remission therapy regimen and the status of PML-RAR alpha in remission were important prognostic factors for long-term survival. Multivariate study showed that only post-remission therapy regimen was associated with RFS and OS. It is concluded that the post-remission treatment combining ATRA, As(2)O(3) and chemotherapy would significantly improve the long-term survival of APL patients achieving CR(1).

RESUMO

The ribosome-lamella complex (RLC) is a cylindrical structure composed of annular lamella associated particles, regarded as ribosomes, around a central core, which is best known in hairy cell leukemia. RLC has been presumed to originate from aggregating rER and ribosomes. Incomplete and maturing RLC structures have been called RLC precursors (pre-RLC). The present paper investigates the various architectural aspects of pre-RLC and the ultrastructural characteristics of the blasts in 6 cases of acute monocytic leukemia (M5) in which these structures occur. Blasts bearing pre-RLC contained irregular nuclei with less heterochromatin and a prominent nucleolus, and many cytoplasmic organelles in an abundant cytoplasm. The findings indicate that pre-RLC might result from an asymmetrical differentiation of organelles in blasts associated with expression of CD117 and CD56 but default of CD14 in M5.
