In this study, we systematically analyze the surface tension and Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with different anions ([NTf2]-, [PF6]-, [I]-, and [Br]-). These anions are combined with the classical 1-alkyl-3-methyl-substituted imidazolium cations ([CnC1Im]+) and a group of oligoether-functionalized imidazolium cations ([(mPEGn)2Im]+) based on methylated polyethylene glycol (mPEGn). In detail, the influences of the length of the alkyl- and the mPEGn-chain, the anion size, and the water content are investigated experimentally. For [CnC1Im]+-based ILs, the surface tension decreases with increasing alkyl chain length in all cases, but the magnitude of this decrease depends on the size of the anion ([NTf2]- < [PF6]- < [Br]- ≤ [I]-). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on [CnC1Im]+-based ILs indicate that these differences are caused by the interplay of charged and uncharged domains, in particular in the different anions, which affects the ability of the alkyl chains of the cation to orient toward the liquid-gas interface. An increase in the mPEGn-chain length of the [(mPEGn)2Im][A] ILs does not significantly influence the surface tension. These changes upon variation of the cation/anion combination do not correlate with the evolution of the HSPs for the two sets of ILs. Finally, our data suggest that significant water contents up to water mole fractions of x(H2O) = 0.25 do not significantly affect the surface tension of the studied binary IL-water mixtures.

Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor in atherosclerosis development and lipid-lowering drugs (i.e., statins) remain the treatment of choice. Despite effective reduction of LDL cholesterol in patients, a residual cardiovascular risk persists in some individuals, highlighting the need for further therapeutic intervention. Recently, the CANTOS trial paved the way toward the development of specific therapies targeting inflammation, a key feature in atherosclerosis progression. The pre-existence of multiple drugs modulating both innate and adaptive immune responses has significantly accelerated the number of translational studies applying these drugs to atherosclerosis. Additional preclinical research has led to the discovery of new therapeutic targets, offering promising perspectives for the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis. Currently, both drugs with selective targeting and broad unspecific anti-inflammatory effects have been tested. In this chapter, we aim to give an overview of current advances in immunomodulatory treatment approaches for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: There is preliminary evidence that individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infections exhibit a more pronounced antibody response. However, these assumptions have not yet been supported by data obtained through various CE-marked tests. This study aimed to close this gap. METHODS: Sixty-nine seronegatives and 12 individuals post-SARS-CoV-2 infection (tested by CE-labelled Roche NC immunoassay or PCR-confirmed assay) were included 21 ± 1 days after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech BNT162b2 vaccine. Antibody response to viral spike protein (S) was assessed by CE-labelled Roche S and DiaSorin S1/S2 assays and by a surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT). RESULTS: After a single dose of BNT162b2, individuals after natural SARS-CoV-2 infection presented with markedly higher anti-S levels than naïve individuals (Roche S: 9078.5 BAU/mL [5267.0-24 298.5] vs 79.6 [24.7-142.3]; and DiaSorin S1/S2: 1465.0 AU/mL [631.0-5365.0] vs 63.7 [47.8-87.5]) and showed all the maximum observed inhibition activity in the sVNT (98%), without overlaps between groups. There was a trend for higher responses in those with a more distant infection, although not statistically significant. The relative antibody increase after dose 2 was significantly higher among naïve individuals (25-fold), but antibody levels remained below that of seropositives. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with naïve individuals, seropositives after natural SARS-CoV-2 infection presented with a substantially higher antibody response already after dose 1 of BNT162b2, as measured by two CE-marked in vitro diagnostic tests and a sVNT. These results should stimulate discussion and research on whether individuals after previous SARS-CoV-2 infection would benefit from a two-part vaccination schedule or whether these currently much-needed second doses could be saved.

In the present study, the capabilities and limitations of surface light scattering (SLS) experiments in reflection geometry are investigated. Based on the study of the transparent reference fluid toluene at 303.15 K over a wide range of wave vectors between (0.3and6.6)×105m-1, the performance of two different detection schemes analyzing light scattered from the vapor-liquid interface in a perpendicular and non-perpendicular direction is assessed. Considering various aspects such as the quality of the heterodyne correlation functions, the input information for data evaluation, and the line-broadening effects, both detection schemes show comparable overall efficiency. For wave vectors larger than 4.5×105m-1, where line-broadening effects are suppressed, the results obtained for liquid viscosity and surface tension agree with measurements in transmission geometry, validating the capability of the apparatus. For wave vectors smaller than 1.5×105m-1, the SLS signals are distinctly affected by line-broadening effects, which will result in erroneous values for surface tension and in particular viscosity, even if empirical fitting approaches commonly used in literature are applied. The modeling of the influence of line broadening on the measurements results by a simple Gaussian-weighted sum of individual damped oscillations reveals the increasing complexity of the underlying wave vector distribution toward smaller wave vectors chosen for the scattering geometry.

Partner and localiser of BRCA2 forms part of a macromolecular complex with BRCA1 and BRCA2, which is critical for the repair of double-strand DNA breaks by homologous DNA recombination. Germline loss-of-function variants in the PALB2 gene may confer an increased lifetime risk of breast, pancreatic, ovarian and other cancers. However, the complete spectrum of predicted pathogenic PALB2 variants associated with each tissue type of cancer remains unknown. A systematic review is performed with the aim of cataloguing predicted pathogenic PALB2 variants in breast, ovary and pancreas cancers. All catalogued predicted pathogenic variants are analysed to assess for overlap and mutational "hotspots" within gene exons. Our results showed that 911 (92.5%) cases were described in breast cancer patients, 49 (5.0%) cases were described in ovarian cancer patients, and 24 (2.4%) cases were described in pancreatic cancer patients. The top five most frequently reported predicted pathogenic PALB2 variants were c.509_510delGA, c.3113G > A, c.1592delT, c.172_175delTTGT, and c.1240C > T, accounting for 57.3% of all cases. Breast and pancreatic cancers share five variants while breast and ovarian cancers share 12 variants. Breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers share eight common variants. Exons with the highest mutation rates were exons 2 (6.7%), 1 (6.3%) and 3 (5.8%). This systematic review provides a quantitative catalogue of predicted pathogenic PALB2 variants described in cancers. This comprehensive analysis of the PALB2 mutational spectrum represents a useful resource for clinicians overseeing PALB2-related cancer surveillance and provides a valuable resource for future PALB2-specific research.

In the present study, the simultaneous and accurate determination of liquid viscosity and surface tension of the n-alkanes n-hexane (n-C6H14), n-octane (n-C8H18), n-decane (n-C10H22), and n-hexadecane (n-C16H34) by surface light scattering (SLS) in thermodynamic equilibrium is demonstrated. Measurements have been performed over a wide temperature range from 283.15 K up to 473.15 K for n-C6H14, 523.15 K for n-C8H18, and 573.15 K for n-C10H22 as well as n-C16H34. The liquid dynamic viscosity and surface tension data with average total measurement uncertainties (k = 2) of (2.0 and 1.7) % agree with the available literature and contribute to a new database at high temperatures. Over the entire temperature range, a Vogel-type equation for the dynamic viscosity and a modified van der Waals equation for the surface tension represent the measured data for the four n-alkanes within experimental uncertainties. By also considering our former SLS data for n-dodecane (n-C12H26) and n-octacosane (n-C28H58), empirical models for the liquid viscosity and surface tension of n-alkanes were developed as a function of temperature and carbon number covering values between 6 and 28. Agreement between these models and reference correlations for further selected n-alkanes which were not included in the development procedure was found.

The ability to tailor waveguide cavities and couple them with quantum emitters has developed a realm of nanophotonics encompassing, for example, highly efficient single photon generation or the control of giant photon nonlinearities. Opening new grounds by pushing the interaction of the waveguide cavity and integrated emitters further into the deep subwavelength regime, however, has been complicated by nonradiative losses due to the increasing importance of surface defects when decreasing cavity dimensions. Here, we show efficient suppression of nonradiative recombination for thin waveguide cavities using core-shell semiconductor nanowires. We experimentally reveal the advantages of such nanowires, which host mobile emitters, that is, free excitons, in a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide, highlighting the resulting potential for tunable, active, nanophotonic devices. In our experiment, controlling the nanowire waveguide diameter tunes the luminescence lifetime of excitons in the nanowires across 2 orders of magnitude up to 80 ns. At the smallest wire diameters, we show that this luminescence lifetime can be manipulated by engineering the dielectric environment of the nanowires. Exploiting this unique handle on the spontaneous emission of mobile emitters, we demonstrate an all-dielectric spatial control of the mobile emitters along the axis of the 1D nanowire waveguide.

The effect of two-point discrimination described in this case report indicates a cortical reorganization through electrical stimulation of receptive fields. The "intervention units" compared to the "baseline" show clear effects. The pain behavior in both "intervention units" showed a clear change in the phantom phenomena, which in both "wash out" phases moved back towards "baseline". Thus, electrical stimulation of receptive fields could be another therapy for the treatment of phantom pain, given the change in two-point discrimination.

Deep dermal defects can result from burns, necrotizing fasciitis and severe soft tissue trauma. Physiological scar restriction during wound healing becomes increasingly relevant in proportion to the affected area. This massively restricts the general mobility of patients. External mechanical influences (activity or immobilization in everyday life) can lead to the formation of marked scar strands and adhesions. Overloading results in a renewed inflammatory reaction and thus in further restriction. Appropriate mechanical stimuli can have a positive influence on the scar tissue. "Use determines function," and even minimal external forces are sufficient to cause functional alignment (mechanotransduction). The first and second remarkable increases in connective tissue resistance (R1 and R2) seem to be relevant clinical indications of adequate dosage in the proliferation and remodulation phase, making it possible to counteract potential overdosage in deep dermal defects. The current state of research does not allow a direct transfer to the clinical treatment of large scars. However, the continuous clinical implementation of study results with regard to the mechanosensitivity of isolated fibroblasts, and the constant adaptation of manual techniques, has nevertheless created an evidence-base for manual scar therapy. The manual dosages are adapted to tissue physiology and to respective wound healing phases. Clinical observations show improved mobility of the affected regions and fewer relapses into the inflammatory phase due to mechanical overload.

BACKGROUND: Since 2017, there have been several reports of artificial intelligence (AI) achieving comparable performance to human experts on medical image analysis tasks. With the first ratification of a computer vision algorithm as a medical device in 2018, the way was paved for these methods to eventually become an integral part of modern clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to review the main developments that have occurred over the last few years in AI for image analysis, in relation to clinical applications and dermatology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following the annual ImageNet challenge, we review classical methods of machine learning for image analysis and demonstrate how these methods incorporated human expertise but failed to meet industrial requirements regarding performance and scalability. With the rise of deep learning based on artificial neural networks, these limitations could be overcome. We discuss important aspects of this technology including transfer learning and report on recent developments such as explainable AI and generative models. RESULTS: Deep learning models achieved performance on a par with human experts in a broad variety of diagnostic tasks and were shown to be suitable for industrialization. Therefore, current developments focus less on further improving accuracy but rather address open issues such as interpretability and applicability under clinical conditions. Upcoming generative models allow for entirely new applications. CONCLUSIONS: Deep learning has a history of remarkable success and has become the new technical standard for image analysis. The dramatic improvement these models brought over classical approaches enables applications in a rapidly increasing number of clinical fields. In dermatology, as in many other domains, artificial intelligence still faces considerable challenges but is undoubtedly developing into an essential tool of modern medicine.

The study was performed to assess potential differences in the etiological relevance of two coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Staphylococcus hominis, in an observational single-center study. Over a 5-year interval, patients in whom there was detected S. haemolyticus or S. hominis of presumed etiological relevance were assessed for the primary endpoint death during hospital stay and the secondary endpoint transfer to an intensive care unit (ICU) after the detection of S. haemolyticus or S. hominis. Patients with S. haemolyticus or S. hominis died in 11.3% (50 out of 444) and 9.5% (60 out of 631) of cases, respectively, and were transferred to ICU after S. haemolyticus and S. hominis detection in 8.7% (19 out of 219) and 11.7% (44 out of 377) of cases, respectively. There was no significance for species-related influence on the primary outcome parameter (P > 0.1), while ICU transfers were more likely for patients with S. hominis detections (P = 0.016). Delayed diagnosis of both CoNS species was associated with an increased probability of death (P = 0.009). The study revealed comparable morbidity caused by S. haemolyticus and S. hominis identified in a clinically relevant context.

INTRODUCTION: Changes in the intestinal bacterial composition seem to play a major role in the pathogenesis and in the clinical course of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which consist of Crohn's disease (CD), and ulcerative colitis (UC). Mutations in the NOD2 gene are the most important genetic risk factors for the development of CD. In this study, the association between mucosal biopsies and the mucosa-associated bacterial composition from CD and UC patients regarding their genetic risk factors (mutations in the NOD2 gene), their endoscopic activity, and their medical therapy (TNF-α blocking therapy) was examined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy biopsies from routine colonoscopies from 33 IBD patients (26 CD and 7 UC) were obtained. Disease activity and clinical characteristics were assessed. Seven different bacterial strains (Bacteroides fragilis, Escherichia coli, Prevotella melaninogenica, Clostridium coccoides, Clostridium difficile, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii) were quantified using real-time PCR. NOD2 genotyping from patients with CD was performed. RESULTS: Five of the 24 patients were positive for at least one mutation in the NOD2 gene. The bacterial composition was different in CD compared to UC, in macroscopic healthy compared to macroscopic inflamed biopsies, in NOD2 mutated compared to NOD2 wildtype patients, and in patients receiving TNF-α blocking therapy compared to patients without this treatment. CONCLUSION: This study further characterizes the mucosa-associated bacteria in IBD patients. Different clinical situations lead to an altered mucosa-associated bacterial composition. The analyzed bacteria could be promising targets for cost-effective surveillance or therapies in IBD patients.

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A streptococcus (GAS), has a propensity to colonize human tissues and form biofilms. Significantly, these biofilms are a contributing mechanism of antibiotic treatment failure in streptococcal disease. In this study, we evaluate a streptococcal-specific bacteriophage-encoded endolysin (PlyC), which is known to lyse planktonic streptococci, on both static and dynamic streptococcal biofilms. METHODS: PlyC was benchmarked against antibiotics for MIC, MBC and minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC). A biomass eradication assay based on crystal violet staining of the biofilm matrix was also used to quantify the anti-biofilm properties of PlyC. Finally, conventional fluorescence microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy were used to study the effects of PlyC on static and dynamic biofilms of GAS. RESULTS: PlyC and antibiotics had similar MIC (range 0.02-0.08 mg/L) and MBC (range 0.02-1.25 mg/L) values on planktonic GAS. However, when GAS grew in biofilms, the MBEC values for antibiotics rose to clinically resistant values (≥400 mg/L) whereas PlyC had MBEC values two orders of magnitude lower by mass and four orders of magnitude lower by molarity than the conventional antibiotics. Laser scanning confocal microscopy revealed that PlyC destroys the biofilm as it diffuses through the matrix in a time-dependent fashion. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that while streptococcal cells within a biofilm rapidly become refractory to traditional antibiotics, the biofilm matrix is readily destroyed by the lytic actions of PlyC.

Surfactant monolayers at liquid interfaces induce a viscoelastic behavior that influences the dynamics of surface fluctuations probed by surface light scattering (SLS). Recent thermophysical property research on viscosity and interfacial tension of liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) systems based on diphenylmethane suggested that such viscoelastic effects may also be present here, although not being expected a priori. To prove the hypothesis that the LOHC intermediate cyclohexylphenylmethane (H6-DPM) can induce a surfactant-like behavior, binary mixtures of diphenylmethane (H0-DPM) or dicyclohexylmethane (H12-DPM) with small amounts of H6-DPM were studied by SLS in combination with conventional viscometry and tensiometry and molecular dynamics simulations between (303 and 473) K. Only in mixtures with H0-DPM which has a slightly larger surface tension than H6-DPM, the presence of the latter compound causes a significant effect on the dynamics of surface fluctuations, especially on their damping. In analogy to the concentration-dependent behavior observed for a monolayer of a highly amphiphilic ionic surfactant on the surface of water at ambient temperature, the orientation of H6-DPM molecules with respect to the surface appears to change from a preferentially perpendicular to a parallel alignment with increasing temperature. This demonstrates that viscoelastic effects including accompanied surface orientation effects can be resolved by SLS even for weakly asymmetric surface-active molecules such as H6-DPM in its diluted mixtures with very similar species.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the comparability of WHO standard referenced commercial SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests over three doses of BNT162b2 vaccine and up to 14 months. METHODS: 114 subjects (without previous SARS-CoV-2 infection or immunosuppressive medication) vaccinated with three doses of BNT162b2 were included in this study. Antibody levels were quantified 3 weeks after the first dose, 5-6 weeks and 7 months after the second dose, and 4-5 weeks and 4 months after the third dose using the Roche Elecsys SARS-CoV-2 S, the Abbott SARS-CoV-2 IgG II Quant, the DiaSorin LIAISON SARS-CoV-2 TrimericS IgG, the GenScript cPASS sVNT and the TECO sVNT assays. RESULTS: For each time point analyzed, systematic differences are evident between the results in BAU/mL of the three antibody binding assays. The assay ratios change in a time-dependent manner even beyond administering the third dose (Roche measuring 9 and 3 times higher than Abbott and DiaSorin, respectively). However, changes decrease in magnitude with increasing time intervals from the first dose. IgG-based assays show better agreement across them than with Roche (overall correlations: Abbott x DiaSorin: ρ = 0.94 vs. Abbott x Roche: ρ=0.89, p < 0.0001; DiaSorin x Roche: ρ = 0.87, p < 0.0001), but results are not interchangeable. The sVNTs suggest an underestimation of antibody levels by Roche and slight overestimation by both IgG assays after the first vaccine dose. CONCLUSIONS: Standardization of SARS-CoV-2 antibody binding assays still needs to be improved to allow reliable use of variable assay systems for longitudinal analyses.

Medical complications during pregnancy have been frequently reported from Western Africa with a particular importance of infectious complications. Placental tissue can either become the target of infectious agents itself, such as, e.g., in the case of urogenital schistosomiasis, or be subjected to contamination with colonizing or infection-associated microorganisms of the cervix or the vagina during vaginal delivery. In the retrospective cross-sectional assessment presented here, the quantitative dimension of infection or colonization with selected resistant or pathogenic bacteria and parasites was regionally assessed. To do so, 274 collected placental tissues from Ivory Coastal and Ghanaian women were subjected to selective growth of resistant bacteria, as well as to molecular screening for beta-lactamase genes, Schistosoma spp. and selected bacterial causative agents of sexually transmitted infections (STI). Panton-Valentine-negative methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was grown from 1.8% of the tissue samples, comprising the spa types t008 and t688, as well as the newly detected ones, t12101 (n = 2) and t12102. While the culture-based recovery of resistant Enterobacterales and nonfermentative rod-shaped Gram-negative bacteria failed, molecular assessments confirmed beta-lactamase genes in 31.0% of the samples with multiple detections of up to four resistance genes per sample and blaCTX-M, blaIMP, blaGES, blaVIM, blaOXA-58-like, blaNDM, blaOXA-23-like, blaOXA-48-like and blaKPC occurring in descending order of frequency. The beta-lactamase genes blaOXA-40/24-like, blaNMC_A/IMI, blaBIC, blaSME, blaGIM and blaDIM were not detected. DNA of the urogenital schistosomiasis-associated Schistosoma haematobium complex was recorded in 18.6% of the samples, but only a single positive signal for S. mansoni with a high cycle-threshold value in real-time PCR was found. Of note, higher rates of schistosomiasis were observed in Ghana (54.9% vs. 10.3% in Ivory Coast) and Cesarean section was much more frequent in schistosomiasis patients (61.9% vs. 14.8% in women without Schistosoma spp. DNA in the placenta). Nucleic acid sequences of nonlymphogranuloma-venereum-associated Chlamydia trachomatis and of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were recorded in 1.1% and 1.9% of the samples, respectively, while molecular attempts to diagnose Treponema pallidum and Mycoplasma genitalium did not lead to positive results. Molecular detection of Schistosoma spp. or STI-associated pathogens was only exceptionally associated with multiple resistance gene detections in the same sample, suggesting epidemiological distinctness. In conclusion, the assessment confirmed considerable prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis and resistant bacterial colonization, as well as a regionally expected abundance of STI-associated pathogens. Continuous screening offers seem advisable to minimize the risks for the pregnant women and their newborns.

BACKGROUND: Serological tests are widely used in various medical disciplines for diagnostic and monitoring purposes. Unfortunately, the sensitivity and specificity of test systems are often poor, leaving room for false-positive and false-negative results. However, conventional methods were used to increase specificity and decrease sensitivity and vice versa. Using SARS-CoV-2 serology as an example, we propose here a novel testing strategy: the 'sensitivity improved two-test' or 'SIT²' algorithm. METHODS: SIT² involves confirmatory retesting of samples with results falling in a predefined retesting zone of an initial screening test, with adjusted cut-offs to increase sensitivity. We verified and compared the performance of SIT² to single tests and orthogonal testing (OTA) in an Austrian cohort (1117 negative, 64 post-COVID-positive samples) and validated the algorithm in an independent British cohort (976 negatives and 536 positives). RESULTS: The specificity of SIT² was superior to single tests and non-inferior to OTA. The sensitivity was maintained or even improved using SIT² when compared with single tests or OTA. SIT² allowed correct identification of infected individuals even when a live virus neutralisation assay could not detect antibodies. Compared with single testing or OTA, SIT² significantly reduced total test errors to 0.46% (0.24-0.65) or 1.60% (0.94-2.38) at both 5% or 20% seroprevalence. CONCLUSION: For SARS-CoV-2 serology, SIT² proved to be the best diagnostic choice at both 5% and 20% seroprevalence in all tested scenarios. It is an easy to apply algorithm and can potentially be helpful for the serology of other infectious diseases.

Physiotherapeutic Scar Therapy for Large Scars Abstract. Deep dermal defects can result from burns, necrotizing fasciitis, and severe soft tissue trauma. Physiological scar restriction during wound healing becomes increasingly relevant in proportion to the area affected. It is massively restrictive for the general mobility of patients. External mechanical influences (activity or immobilization in everyday life) can cause pronounced scar strands and adhesions to form. Overloading ends in a renewed inflammatory reaction and thus in further restriction. Adequate mechanical stimuli can positively influence the scar tissue. The current state of research does not allow a direct transfer to the clinical treatment of large-area scars. However, the continuous clinical implementation of study results regarding the mechanosensitivity of isolated fibroblasts and the constant adaptation of manual techniques have resulted in an evidence-based foundation for manual scar therapy. Early manual treatment in combination with appropriate compression therapy is important.

HYPOTHESIS: Near the critical damping of surface fluctuations, surface light scattering (SLS) signals are affected by the rotational flow in the bulk of the fluid. The adequate consideration of this bulk shear mode is essential for a reliable determination of viscosity and surface tension, yet not fully resolved so far. EXPERIMENTS: To elucidate the influence of the bulk shear mode on the recorded correlation functions related to surface fluctuations with an oscillatory behavior, different evaluation procedures are compared. A new evaluation approach is suggested, which makes use of the entire signal information and represents the contribution of the bulk shear mode to the signal in a convenient and physically meaningful way. This allows to unambiguously access the dynamics of the probed surface fluctuations, i.e. their mean lifetime and frequency as well as their response to the rotational flow in the bulk of the fluid. FINDINGS: By applying the evaluation approach to SLS signals for eight different vapor-liquid systems corresponding to reduced capillary numbers between about 0.4 and 15, it is demonstrated that the developed strategy allows for an accurate determination of viscosity and surface tension. This strategy facilitates the thermophysical property research on fluids by SLS experiments performed close to the critical damping.

HYPOTHESIS: The accurate determination of viscosity and interfacial tension by surface light scattering (SLS) represents a challenging task, especially in the range of small wave vectors. Here, measurements are subjected to line-broadening effects, which are often not adequately described by empirical fitting routines in literature. EXPERIMENTS: For tackling this limitation, a novel evaluation strategy relying on a Monte-Carlo-based optimization is suggested in the present study. Without making prior assumptions about the underlying distribution of wave vectors, the method allows to decompose the measured SLS signal into a superposition of individual contributions represented by damped oscillations. The resulting amplitude distribution for damping and frequency is used to estimate the central wave vector, all of which is required to solve the dispersion relation for hydrodynamic surface fluctuations in its exact form. FINDINGS: By applying the evaluation strategy to SLS signals recorded in reflection direction for the reference fluid toluene, it is demonstrated that the presented concept provides a route towards an accurate determination of viscosity and surface tension in the range of small wave vectors. Hence, the strategy is considered to extend the application range of SLS in connection with opaque and non-transparent fluids for which small wave vectors often need to be probed experimentally.
