Apples are widely cultivated in the Republic of Korea and are preferred by consumers for their sweetness. Soluble solid content (SSC) is measured non-destructively using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy; however, the SSC measurement error increases with the change in apple size since the distance between the light source and the near-infrared sensor is fixed. In this study, spectral characteristics caused by the differences in apple size were investigated. An optimal SSC prediction model applying partial least squares regression (PLSR) to three measurement conditions based on apple size was developed. The three optimal measurement conditions under which the Vis/NIR spectrum is less affected by six apple size levels (Levels I-VI) were selected. The distance from the apple center to the light source and that to the sensor were 125 and 75 mm (Distance 1), 123 and 75 mm (Distance 2), and 135 and 80 mm (Distance 3). The PLSR model applying multiplicative scatter correction pretreatment under Distance 3 measurement conditions showed the best performance for Level IV-sized apples (Rpre2 = 0.91, RMSEP = 0.508 °Brix). This study shows the possibility of improving the SSC prediction performance of apples by adjusting the distance between the light source and the NIR sensor according to fruit size.

Citrus fruits were sorted based on external qualities, such as size, weight, and color, and internal qualities, such as soluble solid content (SSC), acidity, and firmness. Visible and near-infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging techniques were used as rapid and nondestructive techniques for determining the internal quality of fruits. The applicability of the VNIR hyperspectral imaging technique for predicting the SSC in citrus fruits was evaluated in this study. A VNIR hyperspectral imaging system with a wavelength range of 400-1000 nm and 100 W light source was used to acquire hyperspectral images from citrus fruits in two orientations (i.e., stem and calyx ends). The SSC prediction model was developed using partial least-squares regression (PLSR). Spectrum preprocessing, effective wavelength selection through competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), and outlier detection were used to improve the model performance. The performance of each model was evaluated using the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE). In the present study, the PLSR model was developed using only a citrus cultivar. The SSC prediction CARS-PLSR model with outliers removed exhibited R2 and RMSE values of approximatively 0.75 and 0.56 °Brix, respectively. The results of this study are expected to be useful in similar fields such as agricultural and food post-harvest management, as well as in the development of an online system for determining the SSC of citrus fruits.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a serious health issue with increasing incidences worldwide. However, current medications have limitations due to side effects such as decreased appetite, stomach pain, diarrhea, and extreme tiredness. Here, we report the effect of fermented ice plant (FMC) in the T2M mouse model of db/db mice. FMC showed a greater inhibition of lipid accumulation compared to unfermented ice plant extract. Two-week oral administration with FMC inhibited body weight gain, lowered fasting blood glucose, and improved glucose tolerance. Serum parameters related to T2D including insulin, glycosylated hemoglobin, adiponectin, and cholesterols were improved as well. Histological analysis confirmed the protective effect of FMC on pancreas and liver destruction. FMC treatment significantly increased the expression and phosphorylation of IRS-1, PI3K, and AKT. Additionally, AMP-activated protein kinase phosphorylation and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 were also increased in the liver tissues of db/db mice treated with FMC. Overall, our results indicate the anti-diabetic effect of FMC; therefore, we suggest that FMC may be useful as a therapeutic agent for T2D.

A Tungsten-Halogen (TH) lamp is the most popular light source in NIR spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging, which requires a warm-up to reach very high temperatures of up to 250 °C and take a long time for radiation stabilization. Consequently, it has a large enough volume to enable heat dissipation to prevent the thermal runaway of the electric circuit and turn out its power efficiency very low. These are major barriers for miniaturizing spectral systems and hyperspectral imaging devices. However, TH lamps can be replaced by pc-NIR LEDs in order to avoid high temperature and large volume. We compared the spectral emission of the available commercial pc-NIR LEDs under the same condition. As a replacement for the TH lamp, the VIS + NIR LED module was developed to combine a warm-white LED and pc-NIR LEDs. In order to feature out the availability of the VIS + NIR LED module against the TH lamp, they were used as the light source for evaluating the Soluble Solid Content (SSC) of an apple through VIS-NIR spectroscopy. The results show a remarkable feasibility in the performance of the partial least square (PLS) model using the VIS + NIR LED module; during PLS calibration, the correlation coefficient (R) values are 0.664 and 0.701, and the Mean Square Error (MSE) values are 0.681 and 0.602 for the TH lamp and VIS + NIR LED module, respectively. In VIS-NIR spectroscopy, this study indicates that the TH lamp could be replaceable with a warm-white LED and pc-NIR LEDs.

Due to climate change, soil moisture may increase, and outflows could become more frequent, which will have a considerable impact on crop growth. Crops are affected by soil moisture; thus, soil moisture prediction is necessary for irrigating at an appropriate time according to weather changes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a future soil moisture (SM) prediction model to determine whether to conduct irrigation according to changes in soil moisture due to weather conditions. Sensors were used to measure soil moisture and soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm from the topsoil. The combination of optimal variables was investigated using soil moisture and soil temperature at depths between 10 cm and 30 cm and weather data as input variables. The recurrent neural network long short-term memory (RNN-LSTM) models for predicting SM was developed using time series data. The loss and the coefficient of determination (R2) values were used as indicators for evaluating the model performance and two verification datasets were used to test various conditions. The best model performance for 10 cm depth was an R2 of 0.999, a loss of 0.022, and a validation loss of 0.105, and the best results for 20 cm and 30 cm depths were an R2 of 0.999, a loss of 0.016, and a validation loss of 0.098 and an R2 of 0.956, a loss of 0.057, and a validation loss of 2.883, respectively. The RNN-LSTM model was used to confirm the SM predictability in soybean arable land and could be applied to supply the appropriate moisture needed for crop growth. The results of this study show that a soil moisture prediction model based on time-series weather data can help determine the appropriate amount of irrigation required for crop cultivation.

In the current scenario of anthropogenic climate change, carbon credit security is becoming increasingly important worldwide. Topsoil is the terrestrial ecosystem component with the largest carbon sequestration capacity. Since soil organic matter (SOM), which is mostly composed of organic carbon, and can be affected by rainfall, cultivation, and pollutant inflow, predicting SOM content through regular monitoring is necessary to secure a stable carbon sink. In addition, topsoil in the Republic of Korea is vulnerable to erosion due to climate, topography, and natural and anthropogenic causes, which is also a serious issue worldwide. To mitigate topsoil erosion, establish an efficient topsoil management system, and maximize topsoil utilization, it is necessary to construct a database or gather data for the construction of a database of topsoil environmental factors and topsoil composition. Spectroscopic techniques have been used in recent studies to rapidly measure topsoil composition. In this study, we investigated the spectral characteristics of the topsoil from four major rivers in the Republic of Korea and developed a machine learning-based SOM content prediction model using spectroscopic techniques. A total of 138 topsoil samples were collected from the waterfront area and drinking water protection zone of each river. The reflection spectrum was measured under the condition of an exposure time of 136 ms using a spectroradiometer (Fieldspec4, ASD Inc., Alpharetta, GA, USA). The reflection spectrum was measured three times in wavelengths ranging from 350 to 2500 nm. To predict the SOM content, partial least squares regression and support vector regression were used. The performance of each model was evaluated through the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error. The result of the SOM content prediction model for the total topsoil was R2 = 0.706. Our findings identified the important wavelength of SOM in topsoil using spectroscopic technology and confirmed the predictability of the SOM content. These results could be used for the construction of a national topsoil database.

The complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of two DNA barcode-defined haplotypes of Metcalfa pruinosa and one of Salurnis marginella (Hemiptera: Flatidae) were sequenced and compared to those of other Fulgoroidea species. Furthermore, the mitogenome sequences were used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among fulgoroid families. The three mitogenomes, including that of the available species of Flatidae, commonly possessed distinctive structures in the 1702-1836 bp A+T-rich region, such as two repeat regions at each end and a large centered nonrepeat region. All members of the superfamily Fulgoroidea, including the Flatidae, consistently possessed a motiflike sequence (TAGTA) at the ND1 and trnS2 junction. The phylogenetic analyses consistently recovered the familial relationships of (((((Ricaniidae + Issidae) + Flatidae) + Fulgoridae) + Achilidae) + Derbidae) in the amino acid-based analysis, with the placement of Cixiidae and Delphacidae as the earliest-derived lineages of fulgoroid families, whereas the monophyly of Delphacidae was not congruent between tree-constructing algorithms.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the prognostic accuracy of the standardized electroencephalography (EEG) patterns ("highly malignant," "malignant," and "benign") according to the EEG timing (early vs. late) and investigated the EEG features to enhance the predictive power for poor neurologic outcome at 1 month after cardiac arrest. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, observational, cohort study using data from Korean Hypothermia Network prospective registry included adult patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) treated with targeted temperature management (TTM) and underwent standard EEG within 7 days after cardiac arrest from 14 university-affiliated teaching hospitals in South Korea between October 2015 and December 2018. Early EEG was defined as EEG performed within 72 h after cardiac arrest. The primary outcome was poor neurological outcome (Cerebral Performance Category score 3-5) at 1 month. RESULTS: Among 489 comatose OHCA survivors with a median EEG time of 46.6 h, the "highly malignant" pattern (40.7%) was most prevalent, followed by the "benign" (33.9%) and "malignant" (25.4%) patterns. All patients with the highly malignant EEG pattern had poor neurologic outcomes, with 100% specificity in both groups but 59.3% and 56.1% sensitivity in the early and late EEG groups, respectively. However, for patients with "malignant" patterns, 84.8% sensitivity, 77.0% specificity, and 89.5% positive predictive value for poor neurologic outcome were observed. Only 3.5% (9/256) of patients with background EEG frequency of predominant delta waves or undetermined had good neurologic survival. The combination of "highly malignant" or "malignant" EEG pattern with background frequency of delta waves or undetermined increased specificity and positive predictive value, respectively, to up to 98.0% and 98.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The "highly malignant" patterns predicted poor neurologic outcome with a high specificity regardless of EEG measurement time. The assessment of predominant background frequency in addition to EEG patterns can increase the prognostic value of OHCA survivors. Trial registration KORHN-PRO, NCT02827422 . Inflammation is a vital process that maintains tissue homeostasis. However, it is widely known that uncontrolled inflammation can contribute to the development of various diseases. This study aimed to discover anti-inflammatory metabolites from Penicillium bialowiezense. Seven spiroditerpenoids, including two new compounds, breviones P and Q (1 and 2), were isolated and characterized by various spectroscopic and spectrometric methods. All isolated compounds were initially tested for their inhibitory effects against lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Of these, brevione A (3) exhibited this activity with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration value of 9.5 µM. Further mechanistic studies demonstrated that 3 could suppress the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators, such as NO, prostaglandin E2, interleukin (IL)-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-6, and IL-12 by inhibiting the activation of nuclear factor-kappa B and c-Jun N-terminal kinase.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with an increased risk of Colorectal cancer (CRC), and its most important risk factors are the duration and extent of the disease. Pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease has a tendency for a more extensive, more severe, and longer predicted disease duration than adult-onset inflammatory bowel disease. This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of patients with CRC related to pediatric-onset IBD and consider the appropriateness of current surveillance endoscopy recommendations for the detection of premalignant lesions and early-stage CRC. METHODS: We searched a research platform based on the SUPREME electronic medical record data-mining system to identify cases of colorectal malignancy in patients with pediatric IBD that presented between 2000 and 2020. RESULTS: During the follow-up, 4 (1.29 per 1000 person years) out of 443 patients with PIBD was diagnosed with CRC. The median age at diagnosis of CRC was 18.5 (range: 15-24) years, and the median period from diagnosis of IBD to CRC was 9.42 (range: 0.44-11.96) years. The sigmoid colon was the most frequent location of CRC (in 3 of the 4 cases). Adenocarcinoma was the most common histological type (in 2 of the 4 cases). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with pediatric-onset IBD exhibited a much shorter disease duration than that of adult-onset IBD at the time of diagnosis of CRC, suggesting that surveillance endoscopy for the detection of precancerous lesions and early-stage cancer should be initiated earlier in pediatric patients than in adult patients.

Twelve metabolites were obtained from the culture media of Chaetomium nigricolor, including a new furan derivative, methyl succinyl Sumiki's acid (1), and two new atropisomers of the previously reported bis-naphtho-γ-pyrones, (aS)-asperpyrone A and (aS)-fonsecinone A (2 and 3). The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic, chemical, and chiroptical techniques. Compounds 2 and 3 inhibited nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Compound 2 was found to inhibit nuclear factor-kappa B and c-Jun N-terminal kinase activation, in turn suppressing pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines including nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, interleukin (IL)-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-6, and IL-12.

Although steroids are suggested as the treatment of choice for infantile spasms, the mechanism of action is still unclear. Using a rat model of malformation of cortical development with refractory infantile spasms, we evaluated the efficacy of methylprednisolone on spasms susceptibility and behaviors. Additionally, we investigated the in vivo electrophysiological and neurochemical changes of the brain after methylprednisolone treatment. Infant rats with prenatal exposure of methylazoxymethanol at gestational day 15 were used. After a single dose of methylprednisolone or three different doses of methylprednisolone for 3 days, spasms were triggered by intraperitoneal injection of N-methyl-d-aspartic acid. In rats with 3 days of methylprednisolone pretreatment and their controls, behavioral testing was performed at postnatal day 15. In vivo magnetic resonance imaging was conducted at postnatal day 15 after 3 days of methylprednisolone treatment. The rats with single methylprednisolone pretreatment showed significantly delayed onset of spasms and multiple doses of methylprednisolone significantly suppressed the development of spasms in a dose-dependent manner. After multiple methylprednisolone pretreatment and a cluster of N-methyl-d-aspartic acid-induced spasms, the rats showed significantly increased freezing behaviors to conditioned stimuli. Glutamate-weighted chemical exchange saturation transfer revealed significant elevation of glutamate concentration in the cortices of the rats with multiple methylprednisolone pretreatments. Methylprednisolone pretreatment could attenuate N-methyl-d-aspartic acid-induced spasms with in vivo neurochemical and electrophysiological changes, which indicates this steroid's action on the brain and in epilepsy.

UBA6 is an alternative enzyme for ubiquitin activation in vertebrates that plays a pivotal role in early mouse development. Previously, we reported that the Uba6 brain-specific knockout (NKO) mouse is a novel autism spectrum disorder (ASD) mouse model that displays decreased social behavior and communication. To determine the therapeutic impact of environmental stimulation in ASDs, we investigated the behavioral and molecular changes of the NKO and control mice after exposure to environmental enrichment and paired housing in different developmental phases. Our results demonstrated that early paired housing could diminish the ASD phenotypes of NKO mice such as impaired nest building and social interaction and anxiety. Additionally, increased histone acetylation in the amygdala was observed in NKO mice after paired housing without a change in Ube3a levels. Our data suggest that paired housing at an early time point can play a crucial role in ameliorating ASD behavior and can be applied in other ASD animal models or clinical settings.

The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Saturnia jonasii (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) was sequenced and compared to those of 19 other bombycoid species. Furthermore, the mitogenome sequences were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among bombycoid species. The 15,261-bp Saturnia jonasii mitogenome contained the typical sets of genes and gene arrangements found in majority of Lepidoptera. All Bombycoidea species, including Saturnia jonasii, have a 15-33-bp spacer sequence at the trnS2-ND1 junction. The phylogenetic reconstruction of bombycoid species consistently and strongly supported monophylies of the families, Saturniidae, Bombycidae, and Sphingidae, based on Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum-likelihood (ML) methods. Among these families, the Bombycidae and Sphingidae species consistently showed a sister relationship, regardless of data partitions; the BI method strongly supported this relationship, whereas it was moderately supported using the ML method.

The ginseng berry contains a variety of biologically active compounds and has a higher ginsenoside content than its roots. This study focused on the hepatoprotective activity of ginseng berry extract prepared by enzyme treatment (EGB) compared to the non-enzyme-treated ginseng berry extract (GB) and quality control of EGB. The feeding effect of EGB on alcohol-induced liver damage (AILD) was investigated by measuring the serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) compared with those of EtOH-fed mice. Furthermore, cytokine levels in the culture supernatants of EGB- or GB-treated RAW 264.7 cells were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The developed method was applied to the simultaneous quantification of four major ginsenosides in EGB using UPLC-QTOF/MS. Treatment with EGB at a dose of 0.5 or 1 mg/mouse significantly suppressed the AST and ALT levels in mice with AILD. Enzyme-treated ginseng berry was also found to suppress the production of inflammatory mediators like nitric oxide (NO), tumor-necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, showing higher activity than that of GB. The amount of ginsenoside Re, F5, F3, and Rd in the EGB obtained using UPLC-QTOF/MS was 45.9, 3.3, 4.0, and 6.2 mg/g, respectively. These results suggest that EGB has a potential effect on AILD, and its hepatoprotective effect provides beneficial insights into developing new candidates for the prevention and cure of AILD. Also, this study demonstrated the utility of UPLC-QTOF/MS-based major compounds for quality control (QC) of EGB.

Hypsarrhythmia in West syndrome, although hard to define, is characterized by chaotic and disorganized electrical activity of the brain and is often regarded as a generalized EEG pattern without any localization value. Using event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP), we tried to determine the brain dynamics during hypsarrhythmia. Routine 1-h scalp EEGs were retrieved from 31 patients with infantile spasms and 20 age-matched controls. Using the EEGLAB toolbox of MATLAB 2015b, the ERSPs of fast oscillations (FOs; 20-100 Hz) of selected channels were analyzed and compared among groups according to their MRI lesions. FO-ERSP cutoff values for predicting the pathologic foci were estimated. The mean FO-ERSPs across all analyzed electrodes of patients with spasms were significantly higher than those of controls. When the patients were categorized into nonlesional, focal/multifocal, or diffuse lesional groups, the FO-ERSP of patients in the focal/multifocal lesional group was significantly lower than that of those in the nonfocal or diffuse lesional groups. In the focal/multifocal lesional group, seven patients (7/9, 77.8%) showed that the locations of channels with high FO-ERSPs were matched to the pathologic MRI lesions. Thus, the localization of high FO-ERSPs is closely associated with the location of pathologic brain lesions. Further research is required to prove the value of the FO-ERSP as an important quantitative localizing biomarker of West syndrome. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The locations of high fast oscillation-event-related spectral perturbations (FO-ERSPs) are closely associated with brain pathologic lesions, and high FO-ERSPs can be used as a localization biomarker of pathologic brain lesions in patients with hypsarrhythmia. With further validation, FO-ERSP might be useful as a biomarker for the localization of hidden pathologies in conditions with generalized epileptiform activities such as West syndrome.

Objectives: Rotator cuff tear is the leading cause of the decline in quality of life for older adults, but comparative evidence on treatment effectiveness is lacking. This study systematically reviewed the effects of various rotator cuff tear treatments through a Bayesian meta-analysis of the related randomized clinical trials (RCTs).Methods: We searched nine electronic databases for RCTs evaluating rotator cuff tear treatments from their inception through June 2017. A systematic review was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence-Decision Support Unit guidelines (Supplementary Table 1). Outcomes included functional improvement, pain one year after surgical treatment, and tendon structural integrity. The Bayesian network meta-analysis was applied for functional improvement and pain, based on an assumption of consistency and similarity. Tendon integrity was reported descriptively.Results: Fifteen RCTs were selected. Patients undergoing physiotherapy after open surgery showed statistically significant functional improvements compared with those undergoing physiotherapy only (mean differences, 9.1 [credible interval, 0.9-17.4]). Open surgery with physiotherapy was associated with a decrease in pain 1 year after treatment compared with when physiotherapy was combined with arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery, mini open surgery, platelet-rich plasma therapy, or physiotherapy alone (absolute value of mean difference 1.2 to 1.4). The tendon integrity results were inconsistent.Conclusions: Some surgical treatments were associated with significant improvement in function and pain, but evidence regarding their comparative effectiveness is still lacking. A well-designed RCT discussing functional and structural treatment outcomes is needed in future.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in children and adolescents with intractable epilepsy and identify predictive factors for responsiveness to VNS. METHODS: Medical records of pediatric patients who underwent VNS implantation at two Korean tertiary centers were reviewed. At 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 years post-VNS implantation, the frequency of the most disabling seizures in each patient was assessed. Responders were defined as showing an overall 50 % reduction from baseline seizure frequency during follow-up. The clinical characteristics of responders and non-responders were compared. RESULTS: Among 58 patients, approximately half (29/58) were responders. The mean age at implantation was 10.9 years (range, 2.7-20.9) and the mean follow-up duration after VNS implantation was 8.4 years (range, 1-15.5). At 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 years after implantation, 43.1, 50.0, 56.9, and 58.1 % of patients exhibited ≥50 % seizure frequency reduction disabling seizures. The patients with focal or multifocal epileptiform discharges were more likely to be responders than those with generalized epileptiform activities by video or conventional EEG at the time of VNS implantation (Pearson's and χ 2 test, p = 0.001). No other clinical variables were found to be associated with seizure outcomes. Wound infections caused VNS removal in two cases. All other adverse events, including cough and hoarseness, were tolerable. CONCLUSION: VNS is a well-tolerated and effective adjuvant therapy in pediatric patients with intractable epilepsy. Notably, patients with focal epileptiform discharges alone rather than those with generalized epileptiform discharges maybe better candidates for VNS.

We aimed to analyze characteristics of encephalopathy after both hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ pediatric transplantation. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 662 pediatric transplant recipients (201 with liver transplantation [LT], 55 with heart transplantation [HT], and 67 with kidney transplantation [KT], 339 with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation [HSCT]) who received their graft organs at Asan Medical Center between January 2000 and July 2014. Of the 662 patients, 50 (7.6%) experienced encephalopathy after transplantation. The incidence of encephalopathy was significantly different according to the type of organ transplant: LT, 16/201 (8.0%), HT, 13/55 (23.6%), KT, 5/67 (7.5%), and HSCT, 16/339 (4.7%) (P < 0.001). Drug-induced encephalopathy (n = 14) was the most common encephalopathy for all transplant types, but particularly after HSCT. Hypertensive encephalopathy was the most common after KT and HT, whereas metabolic encephalopathy was the most common after LT. The median time to encephalopathy onset also differed according to the transplant type: 5 days after KT (range 0-491 days), 10 days after HT (1-296 days), 49.5 days after HSCT (9-1,405 days), and 39 days after LT (1-1,092 days) (P = 0.018). The mortality rate among patients with encephalopathy was 42.0% (n = 21/50). Only 5 patients died of neurologic complications. Transplant-associated encephalopathy presented different characteristics according to the type of transplant. Specialized diagnostic approach for neurologic complications specific to the type of transplant may improve survival and quality of life in children after transplantation.

The objective of this study was to develop a minimization method of a diauxic growth lag-phase for the biogas production from agricultural by-products (ABPs). Specifically, the effects of proximate composition on the biogas production and degradation rates of the ABPs were investigated, and a new method based on proximate composition combinations was developed to minimize the diauxic growth lag-phase. Experiments were performed using biogas potential tests at a substrate loading of 2.5 g VS/L and feed to microorganism ratio (F/M) of 0.5 under the mesophilic condition. The ABPs were classified based on proximate composition (carbohydrate, protein, and fat etc.). The biogas production patterns, lag phase, and times taken for 90% biogas production (T90) were used for the evaluation of the biogas production with biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. The high- or medium-carbohydrate and low-fat ABPs (cheese whey, cabbage, and skim milk) showed a single step digestion process and low-carbohydrate and high-fat ABPs (bean curd and perilla seed) showed a two-step digestion process. The mixture of high-fat ABPs and high-carbohydrate ABPs reduced the lag-phase and increased the biogas yield more than that from single ABP by 35-46%.
