RESUMO

Despite its potential for clean hydrogen harvesting, photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting cells face challenges in commercialization, particularly related its harvesting performance and productivity at an industrial scale. Herein, a facile fabrication method of flexible thin-film photoanode for PEC water-splitting to overcome these limitations, based on laser processing technologies, is proposed. Laser-induced graphene, a carbon structure produced through direct laser writing carbonization (DLWC), plays a dual role: a flexible and stable current collector and a substrate for the hydrothermal synthesis of tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanorods (NRs). To facilitate water-splitting, a femtosecond-pulsed laser (fs laser) is focused on the WO3 NRs, converting their crystalline phase from pristine orthorhombic to monoclinic structure without thermal damage. With NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst, the flexible thin-film photoanode exhibits good PEC performance (1.46 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE) and retains ≈90% of its performance after 3000 bending cycles. With its excellent mechanical properties, the flexible photoanode can be operated in various shapes with different curvatures, enabling space-efficient PEC water-splitting by loading larger photoanode within a given space. This study is expected to contribute to the advancement of large-scale solar water-splitting cells, introducing a new approach to enhance H2/O2 production and expand its application range.

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic standard for COVID-19 infection is real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) of nasopharyngeal swab and oropharyngeal swab specimens. Rapid antigen tests are cheaper and easier to use than the rRT-PCR method. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is settling down, seasonal epi¬demic is expected. In this study, the performance of two rapid antigen test kits was evaluated based on rRT-PCR test results. METHODS: A total of 346 residual samples was tested by the PowerChek SARS-CoV-2 Real-time PCR Kit or STAN-DARD M nCoV Real-Time-Detection kit, STANDARD Q COVID-19 Ag test kit (SQ RAT), and ND COVID-19 Ag test kit (ND RAT). RESULTS: Compared to rRT-PCR as the standard method, the SQ RAT test kit yielded 77.1% sensitivity (101/131) and 100% specificity (215/215), and the ND RAT yielded 89.3% sensitivity (117/131) and 100% specificity (215/ 215). Both RATs showed sensitivity greater than 85% in samples with RdRp gene Ct value less than 25. There was a false-negative case suspected of prozone phenomenon. CONCLUSIONS: Both RATs showed significant performance, but users should beware of the prozone phenomenon.

The management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is generally not only focused on pharmacological therapy. Medical nutrition therapy is often forgotten by patients for several reasons, such as difficulty determining the right nutritional pattern for themselves, regulating their daily nutritional patterns, or even not heeding nutritional diet recommendations given by doctors. Management of nutritional therapy is one of the important efforts that can be made by diabetic patients to prevent an increase in the complexity of the disease. Setting a diet with proper nutrition will help patients manage a healthy diet. The development of Smart Plate Health to Eat is a technological innovation that helps patients and users know the type of food, weight, and nutrients contained in certain foods. This study involved 50 types of food with a total of 30,800 foods using the YOLOv5s algorithm, where the identification, measurement of weight, and nutrition of food were investigated using a Chenbo load cell weight sensor (1 kg), an HX711 weight weighing A/D module pressure sensor, and an IMX219-160 camera module (waveshare). The results of this study showed good identification accuracy in the analysis of four types of food: rice (58%), braised quail eggs in soy sauce (60%), spicy beef soup (62%), and dried radish (31%), with accuracy for weight and nutrition (100%).

In this paper, we attempted to improve the detection sensitivity of an indirect x-ray detector through using a hybrid active layer composed of a poly [N-90-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(40,70-di-2-thienyl-20,10,30-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT) organic semiconductor and cadmium selenide nanoplatelets (CdSe NPLs) colloidal inorganic semiconductors. First, different blending ratio in the active layer (i.e. 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) of PCDTBT:CdSe NPL were examined, a sensitivity of 89.5µC·Gyair-1·cm-2was achieved using a 1:1 ratio due to the low series resistance (RS) and defect density in this configuration. Then, the oleic acid (OA) that was initially applied in the CdSe NPL surface was replaced with pyridine ligands, this was done because the pyridine ligand is a short-chain ligand that can help charge transfer by reducing the distance between NPLs in the active layer. In addition, an experiment was conducted to determine the optimal ligand exchange time. A detector with an PCDTBT:CdSe NPL active layer fabricated using pyridine ligand exchange achieved a sensitivity of 219.8µC·Gyair-1·cm-2after an exchange time of 12 h, this is an improvement of 155% compared to the detector using a PCDTBT:CdSe NPL with the original OA ligands. Lastly, the optimal thickness for the PCDTBT:CdSe NPL active layer was investigated. The highest mobility of 7.60 × 10- 6cm2/V·s was recorded after fabricating the layer using spin-coating at 1900 rpm, the highest sensitivity of 314.0µC·Gyair-1·cm-2was also achieved under these conditions. Compared to the initial state of the detector, our modifications improved the sensitivity of the PCDTBT:CdSe NPL detector by 251%.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponin (cTn) values above the 99th percentile upper reference limit (URL) indicate myocardial injury. We established 99th percentile URLs for three high-sensitivity cTn (hs-cTn) assays (Beckman Coulter Access hs-cTnI, Abbott STAT hs-cTnI, and Roche Elecsys hs-cTnT) using a healthy population in Korea. METHODS: Each cTn value was measured by three assays and analyzed by dividing by gender and age. RESULTS: The frequency histograms of log-transformed cTn values for Beckman and Abbott assays exhibited a bell-shaped distribution. The 99th percentile URLs were 9.8, 17.4, and 17.3 ng/L in the total population; 10.9/9.0, 18.9/17.0, and 18.9/17.7 ng/L in the male/female population (p < 0.001 for all three assays); and 11.2/7.2, 19.9/14.5, and 22.7/9.3 ng/L in the older/younger population (p < 0.001 for all three assays) for Beckman, Abbott, and Roche assays, respectively. CONCLUSION: Among the three assays, bell-shaped distributions were observed in a frequency histogram of log-transformed cTn values for healthy population in Beckman and Abbott assays. Also, our findings show that the 99th percentile URLs for cTn levels vary not only by gender but age.

The endurance characteristic of Zr-doped HfO2 (HZO)-based metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) capacitors fabricated under various deposition/annealing temperatures in the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process was investigated. The chamber temperature in the ALD process was set to 120 °C, 200 °C, or 250 °C, and the annealing temperature was set to 400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C, or 700 °C. For the given annealing temperature of 700 °C, the remnant polarization (2Pr) was 17.21 µC/cm2, 26.37 µC/cm2, and 31.8 µC/cm2 at the chamber temperatures of 120 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C, respectively. For the given/identical annealing temperature, the largest remnant polarization (Pr) was achieved when using the chamber temperature of 250 °C. At a higher annealing temperature, the grain size in the HZO layer becomes smaller, and thereby, it enables to boost up Pr. It was observed that the endurance characteristics for the capacitors fabricated under various annealing/chamber temperatures were quite different. The different endurance characteristics are due to the oxygen and oxygen vacancies in ferroelectric films, which affects the wakeup/fatigue behaviors. However, in common, all the capacitors showed no breakdown for an externally applied pulse (up to 108 cycles of the pulse).

BACKGROUND: To minimize nosocomial infection against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), most hospitals conduct a prescreening process to evaluate the patient or guardian of any symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 or exposure to a COVID-19 patient at entrances of hospital buildings. In our hospital, we have implemented a two-level prescreening process in the outpatient clinic: an initial prescreening process at the entrance of the outpatient clinic (PPEO) and a second prescreening process is repeated in each department. If any symptoms or epidemiological history are identified at the second level, an emergency code is announced through the hospital's address system. The patient is then guided outside through a designated aisle. In this study, we analyze the cases missed in the PPEO that caused the emergency code to be applied. METHODS: All cases reported from March 2020 to April 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. We calculated the incidence of cases missed by the PPEO per 1,000 outpatients and compared the incidence between first-time hospital visitors and those visiting for the second time or more; morning and afternoon office hours; and days of the week. RESULTS: During the study period, the emergency code was applied to 449 cases missed by the PPEO. Among those cases, 20.7% were reported in otorhinolaryngology, followed by 11.6% in gastroenterology, 5.8% in urology, and 5.8% in dermatology. Fever was the most common symptom (59.9%), followed by cough (19.8%). The incidence of cases per 1,000 outpatients was significantly higher among first-time visitors than among those visiting for the second time or more (1.77 [confidence interval (CI), 1.44-2.10] vs. 0.59 [CI, 0.52-0.65], respectively) (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Fever was the most common symptom missed by the PPEO, and otorhinolaryngology and gastroenterology most frequently reported missed cases. Cases missed by the PPEO were more likely to occur among first-time visitors than returning visitors. The results obtained from this study can provide insights or recommendations to other healthcare facilities in operating prescreening processes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a promising biomarker for gestational alcohol exposure. Studies show PEth accumulation in maternal and fetal blood following alcohol exposure; however, distribution of specific PEth homologues (16:0/18:1, 16:0/18:2, 16:0/20:4) in maternal and fetal blood is unknown. Additionally, PEth levels in highly vulnerable FASD targets in maternal and fetal compartments remain unexplored. We hypothesized that all 3 major PEth homologues will be detectable in the maternal and fetal blood, the maternal uterine artery (a reproductive tissue that delivers oxygen and nutrients to fetoplacental unit), and fetal brain regions following gestational binge alcohol exposure and that homologue distribution profiles will be tissue-specific. METHODS: Pregnant rats received once-daily orogastric gavage of alcohol (Alcohol; BAC 216 mg/dl@4.5g/kg/d; BAC 289 mg/dl@6g/kg/d) or iso-caloric maltose dextrin (Pair-fed control) from gestation days (GD) 5 to 20 or 21. Following chronic exposure, maternal and fetal tissues were analyzed for PEth homologue concentrations utilizing LC-MS/MS technology. RESULTS: All 3 PEth homologues were detected in alcohol-exposed maternal blood, fetal blood, maternal uterine artery, and fetal brain regions (hippocampus, cerebral cortex, and cerebellum). In both maternal and fetal blood, respectively, PEth 16:0/18:2 was more abundant compared to 16:0/18:1 (p < 0.0001,~66%,↑; p = 0.0159, 20.4%↑) and 16:0/20:4 (p = 0.0072,~25%↑; p = 0.0187, 19.4%↑). Maternal PEth 16:0/20:4 was ~ 42% higher than 16:0/18:1 (p = 0.0015). Maternal PEth 16:0/18:2 and 16:0/20:4 were ~ 25%↑ and ~ 20%↑ higher than in fetal blood (p < 0.05). No homologue differences were detected in the maternal uterine artery. In all fetal brain regions, PEth 16:0/18:1 was significantly higher (p < 0.0001) than 16:0/18:2 (~48 to 78%↑) and 16:0/20:4 (~31 to 62%↑) concentrations. PEth 16:0/20:4 was ~ 18% higher than 16:0/18:1 (p < 0.05) in the fetal hippocampus and cortex. CONCLUSION: All major PEth homologues were detected in maternal and fetal blood following chronic gestational binge alcohol exposure; homologue distribution profiles were tissue-specific. This study also provides insights into PEth accumulation in critical FASD targets, specifically the maternal uterine artery and fetal brain.

BACKGROUND: Gestational alcohol exposure can contribute to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), an array of cognitive, behavioral, and physical developmental impairments. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) plays a key role in regulating protein synthesis in response to neuronal activity, thereby modulating synaptic plasticity and long-term memory formation in the brain. Based on our previous quantitative mass spectrometry proteomic studies, we hypothesized that gestational chronic binge alcohol exposure alters mTOR signaling and downstream pathways in the fetal hippocampus. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to either a pair-fed control (PF-Cont) or a binge alcohol (Alcohol) treatment group. Alcohol dams were acclimatized via a once-daily orogastric gavage of 4.5 g/kg alcohol (peak BAC, 216 mg/dl) from GD 5-10 and progressed to 6 g/kg alcohol (peak BAC, 289 mg/dl) from GD 11-21. Pair-fed dams similarly received isocaloric maltose dextrin. RESULTS: In the Alcohol group, following this exposure paradigm, fetal body weight and crown-rump length were decreased. The phosphorylation level of mTOR (P-mTOR) in the fetal hippocampus was decreased in the Alcohol group compared with controls. Alcohol exposure resulted in dysregulation of fetal hippocampal mTORC1 signaling, as evidenced by an increase in total 4E-BP1 expression. Phosphorylation levels of 4E-BP1 and p70 S6K were also increased following alcohol exposure. P-mTOR and P-4E-BP1 were exclusively detected in the dentate gyrus and oriens layer of the fetal hippocampus, respectively. DEPTOR and RICTOR expression levels in the fetal hippocampus were increased; however, RAPTOR was not altered by chronic binge alcohol exposure. CONCLUSION: We conclude that chronic binge alcohol exposure during pregnancy alters mTORC1 signaling pathway in the fetal hippocampus. We conjecture that this dysregulation of mTOR protein expression, its activity, and downstream proteins may play a critical role in FASD neurobiological phenotypes.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of an organic-inorganic hybrid indirect-type X-ray detector with a CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) perovskite active layer. A layer with a thickness of 192 nm annealed at 100 °C showed higher absorption, higher crystallinity, and lower surface roughness than did perovskite layers made under different conditions. In the indirect X-ray detector, a scintillator coupled with the detector to convert X-ray photons to visible photons, and the converted photons were absorbed by the active layer to generate charge carriers. The detector with the optimized MAPbI3 (192 nm thick and 100 °C annealing condition) active layer was coupled with a CsI(Tl) scintillator which consisted of 400 µm thick CsI and 0.5 mm thick Al, and achieved the highest sensitivity, i.e., 2.84 mA/Gy·cm2. In addition, the highest short-circuit current density (JSC), i.e., 18.78 mA/cm2, and the highest mobility, i.e., 2.83 × 10-4 cm2/V·s, were obtained from the same detector without the CsI(Tl) scintillator.

In this paper, we studied the optimized conditions for adding inorganic quantum dots (QD) to the P3HT:PC70BM organic active layer to increase the sensitivity of the indirect X-ray detector. Commonly used QDs are composed of hazardous substances with environmental problems, so indium phosphide (InP) QDs were selected as the electron acceptor in this experiment. Among the three different sizes of InP QDs (4, 8, and 12 nm in diameter), the detector with 4 nm InP QDs showed the highest sensitivity, of 2.01 mA/Gy·cm2. To further improve the sensitivity, the QDs were fixed to 4 nm in diameter and then the amount of QDs added to the organic active layer was changed from 0 to 5 mg. The highest sensitivity, of 2.26 mA/Gy·cm2, was obtained from the detector with a P3HT:PC70BM:InP QDs (1 mg) active layer. In addition, the highest mobility, of 1.69 × 10-5 cm2/V·s, was obtained from the same detector. Compared to the detector with the pristine P3HT:PC70BM active layer, the detector with a P3HT:PC70BM:InP QDs (1 mg) active layer had sensitivity that was 61.87% higher. The cut-off frequency of the P3HT:PC70BM detector was 21.54 kHz, and that of the P3HT:PC70BM:InP QDs (1 mg) detector was 26.33 kHz, which was improved by 22.24%.

Endometriosis is a debilitating, estrogen-dependent, progesterone-resistant, inflammatory gynecological disease of reproductive age women. Two major clinical symptoms of endometriosis are chronic intolerable pelvic pain and subfertility or infertility, which profoundly affect the quality of life in women. Current hormonal therapies to induce a hypoestrogenic state are unsuccessful because of undesirable side effects, reproductive health concerns, and failure to prevent recurrence of disease. There is a fundamental need to identify nonestrogen or nonsteroidal targets for the treatment of endometriosis. Peritoneal fluid concentrations of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) are higher in women with endometriosis, and this increased PGE2 plays important role in survival and growth of endometriosis lesions. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of pharmacological inhibition of PGE2 receptors, EP2 and EP4, on molecular and cellular aspects of the pathogenesis of endometriosis and associated clinical symptoms. Using human fluorescent endometriotic cell lines and chimeric mouse model as preclinical testing platform, our results, to our knowledge for the first time, indicate that selective inhibition of EP2/EP4: (i) decreases growth and survival of endometriosis lesions; (ii) decreases angiogenesis and innervation of endometriosis lesions; (iii) suppresses proinflammatory state of dorsal root ganglia neurons to decrease pelvic pain; (iv) decreases proinflammatory, estrogen-dominant, and progesterone-resistant molecular environment of the endometrium and endometriosis lesions; and (v) restores endometrial functional receptivity through multiple mechanisms. Our novel findings provide a molecular and preclinical basis to formulate long-term nonestrogen or nonsteroidal therapy for endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: In response to inflammation, procalcitonin plasma concentrations increase more rapidly than other acute-phase reactants and higher values are associated with severe disease. Procalcitonin measurements assist in determining whether antibiotic therapy should be used. point-of-care testing (POCT) is performed for early decision making about additional testing or therapy. The ABSOGEN™ PCT (Bumyoungbio, Inc., Suwon, Korea) is a rapid novel semi-quantitative immunochromatographic PCT assay that analyses whole blood samples. We compared the patient quantitative test results to ABSOGEN™ PCT test results. METHODS: Whole blood was loaded onto an ABSOGEN™ PCT cartridge and incubated for 10 minutes. The color intensity of the band of the cartridge was measured using an accompanying device and with the naked eye. The results were graded as negative (<0.1 ng/mL), low (0.1 to <1.0 ng/mL), middle (1.0-2.0 ng/mL), and high (>2.0 ng/mL). A total of 158 specimens with procalcitonin levels measured from 0 to 18.96 ng/mL were used for comparison study. RESULTS: The concordance rate between ABSOGEN™ PCT using the reader and quantitative assay, between ABSOGEN™ PCT using naked eyes and quantitative assay, and between ABSOGEN™ PCT using the reader and naked eyes for the same category was 83.5% (P=.040), 78.5% (P<.001), and 82.3% (P=.001), respectively. The concordance rates for the ±1 categories were all 100%. CONCLUSION: ABSOGEN™ PCT is an accurate assay. It is easy to use, simple, fast, portable. The assay has potential value in clinical applications, especially in emergency care.

The corpus luteum (CL) is a transient endocrine gland. Functional and structural demise of the CL allows a new estrous cycle. On the other hand, survival of CL and its secretion of progesterone are required for the establishment of pregnancy. Survival or apoptosis of the luteal cells is precisely controlled by interactions between survival and apoptosis pathways. Regulation of these cell signaling components during natural luteolysis and establishment of pregnancy is largely unknown in ruminants. The objective of the present study was to determine the regulation of survival and apoptosis signaling protein machinery in the CL on days 12, 14, and 16 of the estrous cycle and pregnancy in sheep. Results indicate that: i) expressions of p-ERK1/2, p-AKT, ß-catenin, NFκB -p65, -p50, -p52, p-Src, p-ß -arrestin, p-GSK3ß, X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP), and p-CREB proteins are suppressed during natural luteolysis; in contrast, their expressions are sustained or increased during establishment of pregnancy; ii) expressions of cleaved caspase-3, apoptosis inducing factor (AIF), c-Fos, c-Jun, and EGR-1 proteins are increased during natural luteolysis; in contrast, their expressions are decreased during establishment of pregnancy; and iii) expressions of Bcl-2, Bcl-XL, Bad, and Bax proteins are not modulated during natural luteolysis while expressions of Bcl2 and Bcl-XL proteins are increased during establishment of pregnancy in sheep. These proteomic changes are evident in both large and small luteal cells. These results together indicate that regression of the CL during natural luteolysis or survival of the CL during establishment of pregnancy is precisely controlled by distinct programmed suppression or activation of intraluteal cell survival and apoptosis pathways in sheep/ruminants.

In ruminants, prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2alpha) is synthesized and released in a pulsatile pattern from the endometrial luminal epithelial (LE) cells during the process of luteolysis. Interferon tau (IFNT) is a Type 1 IFN secreted by the trophoblast cells of the developing conceptus. IFNT acts locally on endometrial LE cells to inhibit pulsatile releases of PGF2alpha and thus establish an endocrine environment for recognition of pregnancy. Cell signaling pathways through which IFNT stimulates expression of multiple genes or proteins in endometrial LE are largely unknown. Results of the present investigation indicate that intrauterine administration of IFNT inhibits pulsatile release of PGF2alpha, while coadministration IFNT and ERK 1/2 inhibitor U0126 restores luteolytic PGF2alpha pulses in sheep. IFNT increases phosphorylation of ERK1/2 proteins and increases its interaction with PGT proteins in endometrial LE. Blockade of ERK1/2 pathways inhibits IFNT action, decreases pERK1/2 and PGT protein interactions, and re-establishes the spatial expression of the oxytocin receptor protein completely and the estrogen receptor protein partially without modulating the expression of interferon regulatory factor-2 (IRF-2) protein in endometrial LE. IFNT does not decrease expression of COX-2, PGDH, or PGT protein in endometrial LE. Our results provide important new insights into IFNT signaling and the molecular endocrine control of PGF2alpha release at the time of establishment of pregnancy in ruminants. This novel IFNT-ERK1/2 signaling module needs to be explored in future studies to understand molecular and cellular mechanisms of IFNT action in endometrial LE in ruminants.

BACKGROUND: We developed a two-dimensional plot for viewing trueness that takes into account potential shift and variable quality requirements to verify trueness using certified reference material (CRM). METHODS: Glucose, total cholesterol (TC), and creatinine levels were determined by two kinds of assay in two levels of a CRM. Available quality requirements were collected, codified, and sorted in an ascending order in the plot's header row. Centering on the mean of measured values from CRM, the "mean ± US CLIA '88 allowable total error" was located in the header of the leftmost and rightmost columns. Twenty points were created in intervening columns as potential shifts. Uncertainties were calculated according to regression between certified values and uncertainties of CRM, and positioned in the corresponding columns. Cells were assigned different colors where column and row intersected based on comparison of the 95% confidence interval of the percentage bias with each quality requirement. RESULTS: A glucose assay failed to meet the highest quality criteria, for which shift of +0.13-0.14 mmol/l was required. A TC assay met the quality requirement and a shift of ±0.03 mmol/l was tolerable. A creatinine assay also met the quality requirement but any shift was not tolerable. CONCLUSION: The plot provides a systematic view of the trueness of quantitative laboratory tests.

An alternating mesophilic and thermophilic two stage anaerobic digestion (AD) process was conducted. The temperature of the acidogenic (A) and methanogenic (M) reactors was controlled as follows: System 1 (S1) mesophilic A-mesophilic M; (S2) mesophilic A-thermophilic M; and (S3) thermophilic A-mesophilic M. Initially, the AD reactor was acclimatized and inoculated with digester sludge. Food waste was added with the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) concentrations of 41.4-47.0 g/L and volatile fatty acids of 2.0-3.2 g/L. Based on the results, the highest total chemical oxygen demand removal (86.6%) was recorded in S2 while S3 exhibited the highest SCOD removal (96.6%). Comparing S1 with S2, total solids removal increased by 0.5%; S3 on the other hand decreased by 0.1 % as compared to S1. However, volatile solids (VS) removal in S1, S2, and S3 was 78.5%, 81.7%, and 79.2%, respectively. S2 also exhibited the highest CH4 content, yield, and production rate of 70.7%, 0.44 L CH4/g VSadded, and 1.23 L CH4/(L·day), respectively. Bacterial community structure revealed that the richness, diversity, evenness, and dominance of S2 were high except for the archaeal community. The terminal restriction fragments dendrogram also revealed that the microbial community of the acidogenic and methanogenic reactors in S2 was distinct. Therefore, S2 was the best among the systems for the operation of two-stage AD of food waste in terms of CH4 production, nutrient removal, and microbial community structure.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a weight-bearing therapeutic exercise program for elite athletes diagnosed as having patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). [Subjects] The subjects were 34 elite athletes from the Seoul T Center. They were randomly allocated to three groups: an elastic band exercise group (EBG), a sling exercise group (SEG), or a control group (CG). [Methods] Therapeutic exercises were performed 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The visual analogue scale (VAS) hamstring length, and static and dynamic Q angles were used to test the exercise effect of the exercises, as well as the onset time of electromyographic activity of vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL). [Results] Decrease of the dynamic Q-angle in EBG was significant and significantly greater than that in CG. The decrease in VAS in SEG was significant and significantly greater than that in CG. There were significant differences in the VL and VMO activity onset times in SEG between pre- and post-test, and their differences between pre- and post-test were also significantly different. [Conclusion] Weight-bearing therapeutic exercise is hoped that clinicians will use this information for better implementation of effective exercise methods for elite athletes with PFPS.
