RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Limb occlusion is a potentially serious consequence of endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (EVAR). This case-control study identifies factors that predispose to limb occlusion. METHODS: A consecutive series of patients from 2 centers undergoing EVAR over an 11-year period 2007-2017 were identified retrospectively. Patient records were interrogated allowing collations of demographics, intraoperative and perioperative data and surveillance data. The preoperative computed tomography angiogram was analyzed to determine EVAR relevant anatomical data. The primary outcome was occlusion of the iliac limb of the implanted EVAR. Raw data are presented as percentages, with comparative data analyzed using Mann-Whitney U-test and binomial logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 787 patients (702 males; median age 78 years, range 53-94 years old) were analyzed. Fifty patients reached the primary outcome, resulting in an overall limb occlusion rate of 6.35%. Factors predictive of limb occlusion were oversizing by >10% native vessel diameter, with oversizing of >20% in 50% of those that occluded. External iliac artery landing zone (12/50 limb occlusions) 24% and postoperative kinking (5/50 limb occlusions) 10% were also more common in those that occluded. Fifty randomly selected controls with similar baseline characteristics were studied. Oversizing of the iliac endograft was found to be significantly greater in the limb occlusion group compared to the controls (P < 0.001) which remained significant on regression analysis. There was no correlation with iliac tortuosity. The Cook stent graft had a 9% limb occlusion rate across sites. Medtronic and Vascutek endografts had 2.4% and 2.5% limb occlusion rates respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Oversizing of iliac limbs by >20% could be a contributing factor to limb occlusion after EVAR and judicious oversizing should be used.

RESUMO

A "signal-off" photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform has been designed for the ultrasensitive detection of DNA methylation levels and multiple methylated sites. The platform employs tungsten trioxide and TpPa-1-COF loaded by gold nanoparticle (AuNPs@WO3@TpPa-1-COF) composite material as the photoactive component and p-type reduced graphene (rGO) as an efficient quencher. The PEC signal of AuNPs@WO3@TpPa-1-COF composite is effectively quenched in the presence of p-type rGO, because p-type rGO can compete with AuNPs@WO3@TpPa-1-COF to deplete light energy and electron donors. In addition, a hybrid strand reaction (HCR) amplification strategy fixes more target DNA and then combines with rGO-modified anti-5-methylcytosine antibody to facilitate ultrasensitive DNA methylation detection. Under optimal conditions, DNA methylation can be measured within a linear concentration range of 10-14 to 10-8 M, with an exceptionally low detection limit of 0.19 fM (S/N = 3). At the same time, the platform can conduct quantitative determination of multi-site methylation, with the linear equation △I = 44.19LogA + 61.43, and the maximum number of methylation sites is 5. The sensor demonstrates high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and satisfactory stability. Furthermore, the proposed signal-off PEC strategy was successfully employed to detect DNA methylation in spiked human serum samples, with recoveries ranging from 93.17 to 107.28% and relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 1.15 to 5.49%.

RESUMO

N,O-containing heterocycles have been incorporated into various approved pesticides and pesticide candidates. The persistent challenge in contemporary crop protection lies in the continuous pursuit of novel N,O-heterocycle-containing compounds with pesticidal properties. Among them, the 1,2,4-oxadiazole scaffold is one of the most extensively explored heterocycles in new pesticide discovery and development. This review focuses on elucidating the molecular design strategy employed along with highlighting the bioactivity of 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives since 2012. Throughout this time frame, tioxazafen and flufenoxadiazam have emerged as prominent examples in which 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives were utilized as the core active structure within numerous applications. Additionally, the preparation methods for substituted 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives are elaborated upon, and their potential value within agrochemistry is discussed.

RESUMO

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play important roles in cardiovascular diseases by delivering their RNA cargos. However, the features and possible role of the lncRNAs and mRNAs in cardiac EVs during ischemia-reperfusion (IR) remain unclear. Therefore, we performed RNA sequencing analysis to profile the features of lncRNAs and mRNAs and predicted their potential functions. Here, we demonstrated that the severity of IR injury was significantly correlated with cardiac EV production. RNA sequencing identified 73 significantly differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs (39 upregulated and 34 downregulated) and 720 DE-mRNAs (317 upregulated and 403 downregulated). Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway analysis were performed to predict the potential functions of the DE-lncRNAs and mRNAs. The lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA ceRNA network showed the possible functions of DE-lncRNAs with DE-mRNAs which are enriched in the pathways of T cell receptor signalling pathway and cell adhesion molecules. Moreover, the expressions of ENSMUST00000146010 and ENSMUST00000180630 were negatively correlated with the severity of IR injury. A significant positive correlation was revealed between TCONS_00010866 expression and the severity of the cardiac injury. These findings revealed the lncRNA and mRNA profiles in the heart derived EVs and provided potential targets and pathways involved in cardiac IR injury.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As China's aging trend intensifies and the proportion of empty nests increases, the health-related quality of life of the elderly is the focus of social attention. Previous studies focused on the quality of life of the elderly, rather than empty nesters, and lacked the discussion of the mechanism of influencing factors. Thus, this study aimed to explore the influencing factors of the quality of life (QOL) and interaction mechanisms among empty nesters in Shanxi Province, China, so as to provide practical reference for improving the QOL of empty nesters. METHODS: A total of 4901 empty nesters in Shanxi Province, China, were selected using multi-stage random cluster sampling method in this cross-sectional study. The quality of life was assessed with the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36). Multiple linear regression analysis (stepwise) was performed to examine the factor associated with QOL. Structural equation model (SEM) approach was conducted to test the direct and indirect association between QOL influencing factors with QOL. RESULTS: The average QOL score of empty nesters was 63.34 (SD = 17.23). The multiple linear regression revealed that gender, age, education, monthly income, drinking status, exercise frequency, physical examination frequency, attention to daily nutritional health, relationship with a spouse and relationship with children were significant predictors of the empty nester's QOL (P < 0.05) (R2 = 0.128). SEM showed that behavioral lifestyle had a direct effect on QOL (ß = 0.446, P < 0.001). Socio-economic status had an indirect effect (ß = 0.288, P < 0.001) on QOL through behavioral lifestyle. The family relationship had an indirect effect (ß = 0.115, P < 0.001) on QOL. CONCLUSION: Behavioral lifestyle was the strongest influencing factor in the quality of life among empty nesters, followed by socio-economic status and family relationships. Thus, maintaining a healthy behavioral lifestyle was important to improve the QOL of the empty nesters. Our findings provide a concrete and strong reference for the formulation of targeted intervention strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Application of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-EXO) has emerged as a novel therapeutic strategy for myocardial infarction (MI). Our previous study showed that pretreatment with hemin, a potent heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) inducer, enhanced the cardioprotective effects of MSCs in a mouse model of MI. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of EXO derived from hemin-pretreated MSCs (Hemin-MSC-EXO) in MI and explore the potential mechanisms. METHODS: MSC-EXO and Hemin-MSC-EXO were collected and characterized. MSC-EXO and Hemin-MSC-EXO were intramuscularly injected into the peri-infarct region in a mouse model of MI. Heart function of mice was assessed by echocardiography. The mitochondrial morphology of neonatal mice cardiomyocytes (NMCMs) under serum deprivation and hypoxic (SD/H) conditions was examined by Mitotracker staining. The cellular senescence of NMCMs was determined by senescence-associated-ß-galactosidase assay. A loss-of-function approach was adopted to determine the role of Hemin-MSC-exosomal-miR-183-5p in the regulation of cardiomyocyte senescence RESULTS: EXO were successfully isolated from the supernatant of MSCs and Hemin-pretreated MSCs. Compared with MSC-EXO, injection of Hemin-MSC-EXO significantly improved cardiac function and reduced fibrosis. Both MSC-EXO and Hemin-MSC-EXO ameliorated cardiomyocyte senescence and mitochondrial fission in vitro and in vivo, and the latter exhibited better protective effects. MicroRNA sequencing revealed a higher level of miR-183-5p in Hemin-MSC-EXO than in MSC-EXO. MiR-183-5p knockdown partially abrogated the protective effects of Hemin-MSC-EXO in attenuating mitochondrial fission and cellular senescence of cardiomyocytes induced by SD/H. High mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) abundance was lower in Hemin-MSC-EXO-treated than MSC-EXO-treated mouse hearts, and HMGB1 was identified as one of the potential target genes of miR-183-5p. Mechanistically, Hemin-MSC-EXO inhibited SD/H-induced cardiomyocyte senescence partially by delivering miR-183-5p into recipient cardiomyocytes via regulation of the HMGB1/ERK pathway. Furthermore, knockdown of miR-183-5p reduced the Hemin-MSC-EXO-mediated cardioprotective effects in a mouse model of MI. CONCLUSION: Our results reveal that Hemin-MSC-EXO are superior to MSC-EXO in treating MI. Exosomal miR-183-5p mediates, at least partially, the cardioprotective effects of Hemin-MSC-EXO by inhibiting cardiomyocyte senescence via regulation of the HMGB1/ERK pathway. This study highlights that MSC-EXO have high translational value in repairing cardiac dysfunction following infarction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Apocynum venetum L. is an important medicinal plant that is mainly distributed in the coastal areas and northwest of China. In addition to its high medical and economic value, its adaptation to saline-alkali and coastal saline lands makes A. venetum an ideal candidate for use in vegetation restoration. To date, the study of A. venetum has been limited in the northwest region of China, little attention has been paid to the genetic diversity and population structure of A. venetum populations in the coastal region. Here, we performed transcriptome sequencing of total RNA from A. venetum leaves and developed efficient expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers for analyzing the genetic diversity and population structure of A. venetum in the coastal region. RESULTS: A total of 86,890 unigenes were generated after de novo assembly, and 68,751 of which were successfully annotated by searching against seven protein databases. Furthermore, 14,072 EST-SSR loci were detected and 10,243 primer pairs were successfully designed from these loci. One hundred primer pairs were randomly selected and synthesized, twelve primer pairs were identified as highly polymorphic and further used for population genetic analysis. Population genetic analyses showed that A. venetum exhibited low level of genetic diversity (mean alleles per locus, NA = 3.3; mean expected heterozygosity, HE = 0.342) and moderate level of genetic differentiation among the populations (genetic differentiation index, FST = 0.032-0.220) in the coastal region. Although the contemporary (mean mc = 0.056) and historical (mean mh = 0.106) migration rates among the six A. venetum populations were moderate, a decreasing trend over the last few generations was detected. Bayesian structure analysis clustered six populations into two major groups, and genetic bottlenecks were found to have occurred in two populations (QG, BH). CONCLUSIONS: Using novel EST-SSR markers, we evaluated the genetic variation of A. venetum in the coastal region and determined conservation priorities based on these findings. The large dataset of unigenes and SSRs identified in our study, combining samples from a broader range, will support further research on the conservation and evolution of this important coastal plant and its related species.

RESUMO

Nitroreductase (NTR) has been recognized as a biomarker for identifying the hypoxic status of cancers. Therefore, it is of high scientific interest to design effective fluorescent probes for tracking NTR activity. However, studies on elucidation of the structure-performance relationship of fluorescent probes and those providing valuable insight into optimized probe design have rarely been reported. Three BODIPY based fluorescent probes were made by conjugation of para-, ortho-, and meta-nitrobenzene to the BODIPY core via a thiolether bond, respectively. Our study revealed that the linkage and nitro substituent position significantly influence the capability of nitroreductase detection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Some Gynura species have been reported to be natural anti-diabetic plants. Improvement of their traits towards application relies on hybridization. Clearly, phylogenetic relationships could optimize compatible hybridizations. For flowerings plants, chloroplast genomes have been used to solve many phylogenetic relationships. To date, the chloroplast genome sequences of 4 genera of the tribe Senecioneae have been uploaded to GenBank. The internal relationships within the genus Gynura and the relationship of the genus Gynura with other genera in the tribe Senecioneae need further research. RESULTS: The chloroplast genomes of 4 Gynura species were sequenced, assembled and annotated. In comparison with those of 12 other Senecioneae species, the Gynura chloroplast genome features were analysed in detail. Subsequently, differences in the microsatellite and repeat types in the tribe were found. From the comparison, it was found that IR expansion and contraction are conserved in the genera Gynura, Dendrosenecio and Ligularia. Compared to other regions on the chloroplast genome, the region from 25,000 to 50,000 bp was not conserved. Seven ndh genes in this region are under purifying selection, with small changes in amino acids. The whole chloroplast genome sequences of 16 Senecioneae species were used to build a phylogenetic tree. Based on the oldest Artemisia pollen fossil, the divergence time was estimated. CONCLUSIONS: Sequencing the chloroplast genomes of 4 Gynura species helps us to solve many problems. The phylogenetic relationships and divergence time among 4 Gynura and 16 Senecioneae species were evaluated by comparing their chloroplast genomes. The phylogenetic relationship of the genera Gynura and Ligularia was different from that observed previous work. In a previous phylogenetic tree, the genus Ligularia belonged to the Tussilagininae subtribe, which was in a lineage that diverged earlier than other genera. Further morphology and genome-wide analyses are needed to clarify the genus relationships.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate anxiety status and its relationship with body mass index (BMI) among empty nesters in China, so as to improve their quality of life and provide direction for further research. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 4901 empty nesters in Shanxi, China. Anxiety, weight, height, depression, socio-demographic variables, attention to daily nutritional health, social activities, and self-care ability were evaluated in the study. T-tests and chi-square tests were used to compare differences in categorical and continuous variables. Binary logistic regression was performed to explore the association between anxiety and BMI among male and female empty nesters. RESULTS: The results showed that 44.5% of empty nesters reported anxiety, of which, 43.2% were male participants and 45.9% were female participants. After adjusting for other variables, overweight empty nesters odds ratio (OR; 95% confidence interval [CI]) = 0.813 (0.692-0.954) were less likely to be anxious, compared with their normal-weight counterparts. Gender was a significant factor in the relationship, with the negative association between overweight and anxiety only found in female empty nesters OR (95%CI) = 0.718 (0.572-0.901). Income, education, complete self-care ability, and depression showed significant associations with anxiety. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of anxiety was high in the study population. Gender is a significant factor in the relationship between anxiety and BMI among empty nesters. The results intend to inform the government and media that overweight is a protective factor for anxiety among female empty nesters, necessitating a move toward eliminating weight bias.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To determine whether uric acid (UA) and intracranial and extracranial atherosclerosis stenosis of elderly patients suffering from ischaemic stroke are inter-related. METHODS: Elderly patients with ischaemic stroke underwent computed tomography angiography (CTA) were enrolled between October 2015 and December 2017. We collected clinical assessment, image data, and laboratory tests, and divided patients into four groups: (1) intracranial stenosis atherosclerosis (ICAS) group, (2) combined intracranial and extracranial atherosclerosis stenosis (COAS) group, (3) extracranial carotid stenosis atherosclerosis (ECAS) group, and (4) non-cerebral stenosis atherosclerosis (NCAS) group. We used univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses to explore potential predictors. RESULTS: We included 408 patients in this study, then divided them into elder group (n = 196) and young- and middle-aged group (n = 212). In old stroke patients, 72 cases (36.73%) were classified as the ICAS group, 45 cases (22.96%) as the COAS group, 21 cases (10.71%) as the ECAS group, and 58 cases (29.59%) as the NCAS group. The level of UA was comparatively higher (p = 0.033) in ICAS than in NCAS. Compared with the group which had only one stenosis artery, UA was substantially increased in patients with more than one stenosis intracranial artery (p < 0.001). With a multivariable analysis, UA was an independent predictor for intracranial stenosis of elderly patients (OR = 1.003, p = 0.042), but the relationship between extracranial artery stenosis and uric acid was negative. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperuricaemia is a risk factor of intracranial artery stenosis rather than of ECAS in elderly patients with cerebral infarction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In China, the problems of population aging and empty nesting have become important issues which will affect the social stability and economic development. The aim of this study was to explore the health promoting lifestyles and influencing factors among empty nesters and compare with non-empty nesters to find out their differences, so as to provide a scientific evidence for people to formulate health management strategies for elderly. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey which used a stratified random cluster sampling method, was conducted among 500 elders in six districts of Taiyuan, China, there were 288 empty nesters and 212 non-empty nesters. The general information and health- promoting lifestyles were investigated by using the self-made General Information Questionnaire and Health Promoting Lifestyle Scale(HPLP). Two-sample t-test and Chi-square test were used to compare the sociodemographic factors, HPLP scores of empty nesters to non-empty nesters; Multiple stepwise linear regression was performed to estimate influencing factors related to the HPLP of empty nesters and non-empty nesters. RESULTS: The current findings showed that there were differences between the empty nesters and non-empty nesters in gender, resident, marital status, education and income, self-care ability, source of income, relationship with spouse and social activities (P < 0.05). Empty nesters were mostly male, married, had a higher education level, self-care ability and income and lived in urban compared with non-empty nesters. The health promoting lifestyles of the elderly in this survey were in the medium level, the highest score for all dimensions in both groups was in nutrition, whereas health responsibility was executed worst. The HPLP and six subscales scores of the empty nesters were higher than non-empty nesters, there were significant differences in total score of HPLP, self-realization and health responsibility (P < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed that the main predictive factors for the empty nesters were education, self-care ability and resident, whereas the main predictive factors for the non-empty nesters were parents-child relationship, source of income and age; social activity was the common factor for two group. CONCLUSION: The health promoting lifestyles of the empty nesters was better than that of the non-empty nesters. Health responsibility, interpersonal relations and stress management were key dimensions to be improved. Except social activity, education, self-care ability and resident were the unique influencing factors of health-promoting lifestyles for empty nesters, while the parents-child relationship, income and age were unique factors for non-empty nesters. The main target of Intervention strategy for elderly health promoting lifestyles should be the enhance of health responsibility, interpersonal relations and stress management by improving social activities, parent-child relationship, education and income of elderly.

RESUMO

Nucleotide insertions/deletions are ubiquitous in eukaryotic genomes, and the resulting hemizygous (unpaired) DNA has significant, heritable effects on adjacent DNA. However, little is known about the genetic behavior of insertion DNA. Here, we describe a binary transgenic system to study the behavior of insertion DNA during meiosis. Transgenic Arabidopsis lines were generated to carry two different defective reporter genes on nonhomologous chromosomes, designated as "recipient" and "donor" lines. Double hemizygous plants (harboring unpaired DNA) were produced by crossing between the recipient and the donor, and double homozygous lines (harboring paired DNA) via self-pollination. The transfer of the donor's unmutated sequence to the recipient generated a functional ß-glucuronidase gene, which could be visualized by histochemical staining and corroborated by polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing. More than 673 million seedlings were screened, and the results showed that meiotic ectopic recombination in the hemizygous lines occurred at a frequency >6.49-fold higher than that in the homozygous lines. Gene conversion might have been exclusively or predominantly responsible for the gene correction events. The direct measurement of ectopic recombination events provided evidence that an insertion, in the absence of an allelic counterpart, could scan the entire genome for homologous counterparts with which to pair. Furthermore, the unpaired (hemizygous) architectures could accelerate ectopic recombination between itself and interchromosomal counterparts. We suggest that the ectopic recombination accelerated by hemizygous architectures may be a general mechanism for interchromosomal recombination through ubiquitously dispersed repeat sequences in plants, ultimately contributing to genetic renovation and eukaryotic evolution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Opportunities for surgical skills practice using high-fidelity simulation in the workplace are limited due to cost, time and geographical constraints, and accessibility to junior trainees. An alternative is needed to practise laparoscopic skills at home. Our objective was to undertake a systematic review of low-cost laparoscopic simulators. METHOD: A systematic review was undertaken according to PRISMA guidelines. MEDLINE/EMBASE was searched for articles between 1990 and 2014. We included articles describing portable and low-cost laparoscopic simulators that were ready-made or suitable for assembly; articles not in English, with inadequate descriptions of the simulator, and costs >£1500 were excluded. Validation, equipment needed, cost, and ease of assembly were examined. RESULTS: Seventy-three unique simulators were identified (60 non-commercial, 13 commercial); 55 % (33) of non-commercial trainers were subject to at least one type of validation compared with 92 % (12) of commercial trainers. Commercial simulators had better face validation compared with non-commercial. The cost ranged from £3 to £216 for non-commercial and £60 to £1007 for commercial simulators. Key components of simulator construction were identified as abdominal cavity and wall, port site, light source, visualisation, and camera monitor. Laptop computers were prerequisite where direct vision was not used. Non-commercial models commonly utilised retail off-the-shelf components, which allowed reduction in costs and greater ease of construction. CONCLUSION: The models described provide simple and affordable options for self-assembly, although a significant proportion have not been subject to any validation. Portable simulators may be the most equitable solution to allow regular basic skills practice (e.g. suturing, knot-tying) for junior surgical trainees.

RESUMO

Very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) play an important role in the survival and development of plants, and VLCFA synthesis is regulated by ß-ketoacyl-CoA synthases (KCSs), which catalyze the condensation of an acyl-CoA with malonyl-CoA. Here, we present a genome-wide survey of the genes encoding these enzymes, KCS genes, in 28 species (26 genomes and two transcriptomes), which represents a large phylogenetic scale, and also reconstruct the evolutionary history of this gene family. KCS genes were initially single-copy genes in the green plant lineage; duplication resulted in five ancestral copies in land plants, forming five fundamental monophyletic groups in the phylogenetic tree. Subsequently, KCS genes duplicated to generate 11 genes of angiosperm origin, expanding up to 20-30 members in further-diverged angiosperm species. During this process, tandem duplications had only a small contribution, whereas polyploidy events and large-scale segmental duplications appear to be the main driving force. Accompanying this expansion were variations that led to the sub- and neofunctionalization of different members, resulting in specificity that is likely determined by the 3-D protein structure. Novel functions involved in other physiological processes emerged as well, though redundancy is also observed, largely among recent duplications. Conserved sites and variable sites of KCS proteins are also identified by statistical analysis. The variable sites are likely to be involved in the emergence of product specificity and catalytic power, and conserved sites are possibly responsible for the preservation of fundamental function.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the distribution of stenosis of intracranial and extracranial arteries of Han population patients suffering from cerebral infarction in the city of Quanzhou in Fujian and to determine the correlation of apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B with intracranial and extracranial atherosclerosis stenosis. METHODS: For this study, we enrolled patients with cerebral infarction between December 2009 and October 2012 at the Neurology Department of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. All patients were examined by computed tomography angiography (CTA). Past medical history, demographic data, and biochemical markers were collected. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to study the association between apo A1, apo B, and cerebral atherosclerosis stenosis. RESULTS: A total of 412 patients were included in this study. 137 cases (33.3%) were classified as the intracranial atherosclerosis stenosis (ICAS) group, 74 cases (18.0%) as the combined intracranial and extracranial atherosclerosis stenosis (COAS) group, 44 cases (0.7%) as the extracranial atherosclerosis stenosis (ECAS) group, and 157 cases (38.1%) as the non-cerebral atherosclerosis stenosis (NCAS) group. Middle cerebral arteries (43.8%) were the most common lesions of intracranial arterial atherosclerosis stenosis. Extracranial carotid stenosis (30.7%) were more likely to be stenoses in the extracranial internal carotid arteries. Compared with the NCAS group, apo B was significantly higher (p < 0.001), apo A1 was significantly lower in the ICAS group and COAS group (p = 0.02 and p = 0.030). Compared with the mild atherosclerosis stenosis group, apo B was higher in the severe extracranial atherosclerosis stenosis group (p = 0.03), apo A1 was lower in the severe intracranial atherosclerosis stenosis group (p < 0.001). The multiple logistic regression analyses showed that when apo A1 > 1.28 g/L, it was an independent protective factor of intracranial stenosis (OR, 0.39), apo B was an independent risk factor of the cerebral atherosclerosis stenosis group, and when apo B > 1.16, it is significantly associated with the cerebral atherosclerosis stenosis group (ICAS: OR, 6.41) (ECAS: OR, 5.15). CONCLUSIONS: 1. The occurrence of atherosclerosis stenosis in intracranial arteries is more frequent than that in extracranial arteries in population with cerebral infarction; 2. Apo B is an independent risk factor of intracranial and extracranial arterial stenosis, apo A1 is associated with the degree of intracranial stenosis and an independent protector of intracranial stenosis.

RESUMO

This study investigates the spatial associations of urban tourism phenomena by using GIS and statistical methods to examine the relationships between hotels and land use types, attractions, transportation facilities, and the economic variables of the tertiary planning units in which the hotels are located. Hong Kong is used as an example. The study first introduces the spatial characteristics of hotels and attractions development in Hong Kong. A geographical information system is then used to map hotels and investigate the characteristics of the land use, attractions, and transport facilities around hotels. The spatial relationships are then analyzed with a set of logistic regression models. The results reveal that commercial land type and the number of attractions around hotels are significantly related to the distribution of upper-grade hotels in Hong Kong. The determinants vary over time and the spatial structure changes accordingly. The analysis is important theoretically as it enriches the methodologies for analyzing the relationships between hotels and urban structure, and for conceptualizing and identifying tourism functional zones. It is important for practitioners as it provides useful information for selecting sites for hotels.

RESUMO

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) exist throughout our bodies. We recently revealed the important role of intracardiac EVs induced by myocardial ischemia/reperfusion on cardiac injury and dysfunction. However, the role of EVs isolated from normal tissues remains unclear. Here we found that EVs, derived from murine heart, lung, liver and kidney have similar effects on macrophages and regulate the inflammation, chemotaxis, and phagocytosis of macrophages. Interestingly, EV-treated macrophages showed LPS resistance with reduced expressions of inflammatory cytokines and enhanced phagocytic activity. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the protein content in EVs contributed to the activation of inflammation, while the RNA component mainly limited the excessive inflammatory response of macrophages to LPS. The enrichment of miRNAs, including miR-148a-3p, miR-1a-3p and miR-143-3p was confirmed in tissue EVs. These EV-enriched miRNAs contributed to the inflammation remission in LPS induced macrophages through multiple pathways, including STAT3, P65 and SAPK/JNK. Moreover, administration of both EVs and EV-educated macrophages attenuated septic injury and cytokine storm in murine CLP models. Taken together, the present study disclosed that EVs from normal tissues can orchestrate the homeostasis of macrophages and attenuate inflammatory injury of sepsis. Therefore, tissue derived EVs or their derivatives may serve as potential therapeutic strategies in inflammatory diseases.

RESUMO

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: The genetic structure of North American herbaceous Smilax, a clade of closely related understory herbs that has a wide and disjunct distribution, was investigated to test the hypothesis of whether a northern refugium in the upper Midwest may have existed for these plants during the last glaciation. METHODS: We analyzed 33 populations sampled from California and throughout the eastern United States using AFLP and chloroplast DNA sequence data. KEY RESULTS: Individuals of S. jamesii from northern California formed a clade sister to the eastern North American species, and they likely diverged from each other during the Pleistocene. Among the eastern species, two lineages were found on opposite sides of the Appalachian Mountains. The populations near the "Driftless Area" contained most of the chlorotypes found in the Midwest, including a unique one endemic to this area, and the AFLP data indicated that one population from this area has the highest frequency-down-weighted-marker value. CONCLUSIONS: This study, and others that have focused on mammals, amphibians, and woody plants, provides further evidence for the debate over whether the upper Midwest's "Driftless Area" may have hosted a biologically diverse northern glacial refugium. Herbaceous species of Smilax from eastern North American exhibit an Appalachian discontinuity. They appear to have persisted in multiple refugia both east and west of the Appalachians, with several populations persisting in situ through the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). We suggest that they experienced localized expansion after the LGM, possibly followed by subsequent contact between the Midwest and the East Coastal lineages.
