RESUMO

The oriented pore structure of wood endows it with a variety of outstanding properties, among which the low thermal conductivity has attracted researchers to develop wood-like aerogels as excellent thermal insulation materials. However, the increasing demands of environmental protection have put forward new and strict requirements for the sustainability of aerogels. Here, we report an all-natural wood-inspired aerogel consisting of all-natural ingredients and develop a method to activate the surface-inert wood particles to construct the aerogel. The obtained wood-inspired aerogel has channel structure similar to that of natural wood, endowing it with superior thermal insulation properties to most existing commercial sponges. In addition, remarkable fire retardancy and complete biodegradability are integrated. With the above outstanding performances, this sustainable wood-inspired aerogel will be an ideal substitute for the existing commercial thermal insulation materials.

RESUMO

Ubiquitous petrochemical-based plastics pose a potential threat to ecosystems. In response, bioderived and degradable polymeric materials are being developed, but their mechanical and thermal properties cannot compete with those of existing petrochemical-based plastics, especially those used as structural materials. Herein, we report a biodegradable plant cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-derived polymeric structural material with high-density reversible interaction networks between nanofibers, exhibiting mechanical and thermal properties better than those of existing petrochemical-based plastics. This all-green material has substantially improved flexural strength (∼300 MPa) and modulus (∼16 GPa) compared with those of existing petrochemical-based plastics. Its average thermal expansion coefficient is only 7 × 10-6 K-1, which is more than 10 times lower than those of petrochemical-based plastics, indicating its dimension is almost unchanged when heated, and thus, it has a thermal dimensional stability that is better than those of plastics. As a fully bioderived and degradable material, the all-green material offers a more sustainable high-performance alternative to petrochemical-based plastics.

RESUMO

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with excellent EMI shielding efficiency (SE), lightweight property, and superb mechanical performance are vitally important for modern society, but it is still a challenge to realize these performances simultaneously on one material. Here, we report a sustainable bioinspired double-network structural material with excellent specific strength (146 MPa g-1 cm3) and remarkable EMI SE (100 dB) from cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which demonstrates remarkable and outstanding performance to both typical metal materials and reported polymer composites. In particular, the bioinspired double-network structure design simultaneously achieves an extremely high electrical conductivity and mechanical strength, which makes it a lightweight, high shielding efficiency, and sustainable structural material for real-life electromagnetic wave shielding applications.

RESUMO

Hydrogel materials with high water content and good biocompatibility are drawing more and more attention now, especially for biomedical use. However, it still remains a challenge to construct hydrogel fibers with enough strength and toughness for practical applications. Herein, we report a bio-inspired lotus-fiber-mimetic spiral structure hydrogel bacterial cellulose fiber with high strength, high toughness, high stretchability, and energy dissipation, named biomimetic hydrogel fiber (BHF). The spiral-like structure endows BHF with excellent stretchability through plastic deformation and local failure, assisted by the breaking-reforming nature of the hydrogen bonding network among cellulose nanofibers. With the high strength, high stretchability, high energy dissipation, high hydrophilicity, porous structure, and excellent biocompatibility, BHF is a promising hydrogel fiber for biomedicine. The outstanding stretchability and energy dissipation of BHF allow it to absorb energy from the tissue deformation around a wound and effectively protect the wound from rupture, which makes BHF an ideal surgical suture.

RESUMO

Water purification by solar distillation is considered a promising technology for producing clean water from undrinkable water resources. A solar steam generator is a central part of a solar distillation process to separate water and contaminants. Here, we report an efficient and sustainable hierarchical solar steam generator (HSSG) with reduced vaporization enthalpy based on bacterial cellulose (BC) nanocomposites. The nanomaterials are assembled with BC nanofibers produced by bacteria in situ to form nanocomposites. Using this method, we construct functional BC nanocomposites inside and on the natural porous structure of wood. Our HSSG integrates solar-to-vapor efficiency improvement and vaporization enthalpy reduction by integrating the hierarchical multifunctional BC nanocomposites with the natural porous structure of wood. Because of the biomimetic design, hierarchical structure and reduced vaporization enthalpy of HSSG, a high evaporation rate of 2.9 kg m-2 h-1 and solar-to-vapor efficiency of 80% is achieved.

RESUMO

In recent years, substantial evidence has emerged to suggest that spreading of pathological proteins contributes to disease pathology in numerous neurodegenerative disorders. Work from our laboratory and others have shown that, despite its strictly genetic nature, Huntington's disease (HD) may be another condition in which this mechanism contributes to pathology. In this study, we set out to determine if the mutant huntingtin protein (mHTT) present in post-mortem brain tissue derived from HD patients can induce pathology in mice and/or non-human primates. For this, we performed three distinct sets of experiments where homogenates were injected into the brains of adult a) Wild-type (WT) and b) BACHD mice or c) non-human primates. Neuropathological assessments revealed that, while changes in the endogenous huntingtin were not apparent, mHTT could spread between cellular elements and brain structures. Furthermore, behavioural differences only occurred in the animal model of HD which already overexpressed mHTT. Taken together, our results indicate that mHTT derived from human brains has only a limited capacity to propagate between cells and does not depict prion-like characteristics. This contrasts with recent work demonstrating that other forms of mHTT - such as fibrils of a pathological polyQ length or fibroblasts and induced pluripotent stem cells derived from HD cases - can indeed disseminate disease throughout the brain in a prion-like fashion.

RESUMO

In order to model various aspects of Huntington's disease (HD) pathology, in particular protein spread, we administered adeno-associated virus (AAV) expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) or GFP coupled to HTT-Exon1 (19Q or 103Q) to the central nervous system of adult wild-type (WT) mice and non-human primates. All animals underwent behavioral testing and post-mortem analyses to determine the long-term consequences of AAV injection. Both mice and non-human primates demonstrated behavioral changes at 2-3 weeks post-surgery. In mice, these changes were absent after 3 months while in non-human primates, they persisted in the majority of tested animals. Post-mortem analysis revealed that spreading of the aggregates was limited, although the virus did spread between synaptically-connected brain regions. Despite circumscribed spreading, the presence of mHTT generated changes in endogenous huntingtin (HTT) levels in both models. Together, these results suggest that viral expression of mHTTExon1 can induce spreading and seeding of HTT in both mice and non-human primates.

RESUMO

Sesami Semen Nigrum has a long history of dual use(medicine and food). The research of its processing technology is related to the development and utilization of its own "medicine-food balance" feature, which is the basis for Sesami Semen Nigrum to realize the modernization of technology and standardization of quality. Due to its various processing methods and the long history span, the traditional medical classics(from the end of Han Dynasty to the Republic of China), modern standard specification and researches on processing were sorted out with the help of database and document mining technology, and the visual thinking was adopted to analyze the evolution trend of Sesami Semen Nigrum processing methods. In addition, the processing characteristics of Sesami Semen Nigrum in various periods and effect of processing on its chemical compositions and pharmacological effect were briefly described to explore the differences and their reasons in the processing of Sesami Semen Nigrum from ancient times to the present time, aiming to provide an idea and documentary basis for the study of traditional processing technology.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the antidepressant effects of Puyu Capsules and its potential mechanism. The antidepressant activity of Puyu Capsules was evaluated by forced swimming test(FST) and tail suspension test(TST) after subchronic administration in mice. Next, the mice were subjected to a chronic unpredictable stress(CUS) protocol for a period of 28 d to induce depressive-like behaviors. Then, a sucrose preference test, open-field test and novelty-suppressed feeding test were performed to evaluate the antidepressant effect of Puyu Capsules. After the behavioral test, the adrenal index was calculated; the levels of serum corticosterone(CORT) and adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA); the levels of glucocorticoid receptor(GR), protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF), and the ratio of phosphorylated cAMP response element binding protein(CREB) to total CREB were detected by Western blot to explore the antidepressant function and mechanism of Puyu Capsules. The results suggested that Puyu Capsules had significant antidepressant effects on both the depression model and CUS model. At the same time, the drug could prevent the change of adrenal index induced by CUS and reverse the abnormal activation of CORT and ACTH in the serum of depressed mice. Finally, Puyu Capsules could also reverse the lower expression of pCREB, BDNF and GR in the hippocampus of CUS mice. In conclusion, Puyu Capsules produced significant antidepressant effects, and the mechanism was closely related to hypothalamic pituitary adrenal(HPA) axis activity, GR and CREB-BDNF pathway expression.

RESUMO

Hypertension is a kind of chronic cardiovascular system disease caused by a series of factors and carriers dysfunction, which belongs to the category of Tibetan medicine "Chalong disease", and has a high rate of disability and mortality. Zuomua Decoction is a classical Tibetan medicine for Chalong disease, but its mechanism is not clear. Therefore, in this paper we explored the multi-components, multi-targets and multi-channels mechanism of Zuomua Decoction in the treatment of hypertension based on network pharmacology and molecular docking technology. First of all, the chemical components of Zuomua Decoction were obtained in the retrieval of traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database(TCMSP), China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) and Wanfang database. The potential targets of Zuomua Decoction were predicted by BATMAN-TCM database, and the targets of hypertension were obtained by using DisGeNET database. The intersection of these two targets set was taken to obtain the potential targets of Zuomua Decoction in the treatment of hypertension, and then the chemical compositions-targets network was constructed. Secondly, the intersection targets were imported into STRING database to obtain the interaction relationship of intersection targets, and the protein interaction network of Zuomua Decoction in the treatment of hypertension was constructed in Cytoscape. Topological, GO, and KEGG enrichment analysis were used to construct the key targets-signal pathways-biological processes network diagram and explore the mechanism of Zuomua Decoction in the treatment of hypertension. Finally, the key targets were selected to construct the pharmacodynamic identification models to verify the effect mode of Zomua Decoction in treating hypertension. The results showed that there were 61 chemical components and 90 potential targets in the compounds-targets network. We obtained 21 key targets, 154 signal pathways, and 382 biological processes in topological, GO, and KEGG enrichment analysis of the protein interaction network, and in the comprehensive analysis, it was found that Zuomua Decoction could reduce blood pressure by regulating renin angiotension aldosterone system, balancing the concentration of intracellular calcium and sodium ions and regulating vasoconstriction and relaxation. ACE, AGTR1, and ADRB2 were used as the carriers for molecular docking study on the components of Zuoma Decoction, and the results showed that the chemical components of Zuomua Decoction had a good binding activity with key targets. The purpose of this study is to provide ideas for the in-depth study of Zuoma Decoction in the treatment of hypertension, and provide scientific basis for its clinical rational application.

RESUMO

The present clinical practice guideline was written by experts organized by the special group of key projects in the 13 th five-year plan period of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences based on the standards and procedures of World Health Orga-nization Handbook for Guideline Development, with "evidence-based, consensus-based, and experience-based principle" as a guide. On the basis of practice in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and clinical research for migraine, following the idea and method of evidence-based medicine, as well as the expert experience, the current best evidence and patients' values, the internationally recognized evidence quality evaluation methods and recommendation grading system were combined with the prescription record of classical TCM, TCM expert experience, and modern clinical research evidences. The acupuncture therapy, classic prescriptions and Chinese patent medicines used in the treatment of migraine in acute stage and preventive treatment were summarized to obtain five classic prescriptions(Chuanxiong Chatiao Powder, Chuanxiong Dingtong Yin, Sanpian Decoction, Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction, and Tongqiao Huoxue Decoction), and four Chinese patent medicines(Zhengtian Pills, Toutongning Capsules, Tongtian Oral Liquid, and Yangxue Qingnao Granules/Pills), and the common problems in their clinical application were analyzed. The purpose of this guideline is to standardize the treatment of migraine with TCM, reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks, and improve the patients' quality of life. It provides the clinical basis for the TCM treatment of migraine, and ensures the safety, effectiveness, practicability and scientificity of the treatment, so as to promote the TCM treatment of migraine. Due to the influence of region, nationality, race and other factors of the users, the detailed implementation of the guideline should be determined according to the actual situation.

RESUMO

To systemically assess the clinical efficacy of oral Chinese patent medicine for migraine by using network Meta-analysis. Four Chinese databases(CNKI, VIP, WanFang, CBM), three English databases(Medline, EMbase, Cochrane Library) and ClinicalTrials.gov were systematically and comprehensively retrieved from the establishment of each database to April 24, 2020. Rando-mized controlled trial(RCT) on oral Chinese patent medicine combined with Flunarizine for migraine were screened out according to inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. Literature screening and data extraction were conducted independently by 2 researchers. The included studies were evaluated with the Cochrane bias risk assessment tool. Data analysis was conducted by using Stata 16.0 software. Finally, a total of 52 RCTs were included, involving 11 kinds of oral Chinese patent medicines. The results of the network Meta-analysis showed that in terms of headache frequency, the order of efficacy was: Flunarizine combined with Tongtian Oral Liquid>combined with Zhengtian Pills>combined with Toutongning Capsules>combined with Yangxue Qingnao Granules>combined with Tianshu Capsules>combined with Xuefu Zhuyu Capsules>combined with Danzhen Toutong Capsules>combined with Chuanxiong Qingnao Granules>combined with Songling Xuemaikang Capsules. In terms of headache intensity, the order of efficacy was: Flunarizine combined with Tongtian Oral Liquid>combined with Zhengtian Pills>combined with Danzhen Toutong Capsules>combined with Tianshu Capsules>combined with Toutongning Capsules>combined with Chuanxiong Qingnao Granules>combined with Yuntongding Capsules>combined with Yang-xue Qingnao Granules>combined with Danqi Soft Capsules. In terms of headache lasting time, the order of efficacy was: Flunarizine combined with Tongtian Oral Liquid>combined with Yangxue Qingnao Granules>combined with Toutongning Capsules>combined with Zhengtian Pills>combined with Danzhen Toutong Capsules>combined with Tianshu Capsules>combined with Xuefu Zhuyu Capsules>combined with Yuntongding Capsules>combined with Chuanxiong Qingnao Granules>combined with Songling Xuemaikang Capsules. The results showed that oral Chinese patent medicines combined with Flunarizine were effective in improving the clinical efficacy for migraine. Due to the differences in the number and quality of studies included in studies of different Chinese patent medicines, and the lack of direct comparison of Chinese patent medicines, the results of the above order of Chinese patent medicines need to be demonstrated in future multi-center, large-sample, and double-blind randomized trial.

RESUMO

To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture versus Flunarizine hydrochloride in the treatment of migraine. Four Chinese databases(CNKI, VIP, WanFang, CBM), three English databases(Cochrane Library, EMbase, Medline) and ClinicalTrail.gov were systematically and comprehensively retrieved. The retrieval time was from the establishment of each database to January 8, 2020. Randomized controlled trial(RCT) for acupuncture versus Flunarizine in the treatment of migraine were screened out according to inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. The included studies were evaluated with the Cochrane bias risk assessment tool. The included studies was conducted by RevMan 5.3, and the outcome indicators were evaluated for evidence quality and strength of recommendation by the GRADE system. A total of 1 033 literatures were retrieved, and 23 studies were finally included. Except for 4 multiarm tests, the total sample size was 1 548, including 785 in acupuncture group and 763 in Flunarizine group. The overall quality of the included studies was not high. Meta-analysis results showed that the acupuncture group was superior to the Flunarizine group in reduction of headache frequency(SMD=-1.00, 95%CI[-1.45,-0.54], P<0.000 1). In reduction of headache intensity, acupuncture group was superior to Flunarizine group(SMD=-1.05, 95%CI[-1.41,-0.68], P<0.000 01). In reduction of headache duration, acupuncture group was superior to Flunarizine group(SMD=-1.42, 95%CI[-1.83,-1.02], P<0.000 1). The acupuncture group was superior to Flunarizine group(MD=-0.17, 95%CI[-0.21,-0.13], P<0.000 01) in reduction of the painkillers taking frequency. The acupuncture group was superior to Flunarizine group(SMD=-0.94, 95%CI[-1.35,-0.52], P<0.000 1) in allevia-tion of paroxysmal symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting. The GRADE system showed that the evidence level of the above indicators was extremely low, and the strength of recommendation was low. As for the occurrence of adverse reactions, the adverse reactions reported in the acupuncture group included in the study were all mild adverse reactions, like drowsiness, subcutaneous bleeding, local pain, subcutaneous hematoma and dizziness needle. The available evidence showed that acupuncture has a better efficacy than Flunarizine hydrochloride in the treatment of migraine in adult patients. However, due to the high bias risk in the included studies, the conclusions of this study shall be adopted with caution, and more high-quality studies shall be carried out for verification in the future.

RESUMO

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Yangxue Qingnao Granules alone or combined with calcium channel blocker in treatment of migraine. In this study, four Chinese databases(CNKI, VIP, WanFang, CBM), three English databases(Cochrane Library, EMbase, Medline) and clinical trials registration center(ClinicalTrials.gov) were retrieved. The retrieval time was from the establishment of each database to January 8, 2020. According to the set inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria, the randomized controlled trial(RCT) of Yangxue Qingnao Granules alone or combined with calcium channel blocker was selected. The "Cochrane bias risk assessment" tool was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. RevMan 5.3 was used to conduct Meta-analysis of the included studies and grade system was used to evaluate the evidence quality of the outcome indicators. A total of 583 documents were retrieved and finally included in 23 studies, with a total sample size of 2 308 cases, 1 171 cases in the treatment group and 1 137 cases in the control group. The overall quality of the research included was not high. Meta-analysis showed that,(1)in terms of effective rate, Yangxue Qingnao Granules combined with calcium channel blocker was better than calcium channel blocker(RR=1.24, 95%CI[1.17, 1.32], P<0.000 01), and there was no significant difference between Yangxue Qingnao Granules and calcium channel blocker(RR=1.36, 95%CI[0.91, 2.03], P=0.14).(2)In terms of reducing headache frequency, when the unit of headache frequency was times per month, Yangxue Qingnao Granules combined with calcium channel blocker was better than calcium channel blocker(MD=-1.39, 95%CI[-1.83,-0.95], P<0.000 01), when the unit of headache frequency was times daily, Yangxue Qingnao Granules combined with calcium channel blocker was better than calcium channel blocker(MD=-2.08, 95%CI[-2.34,-1.82], P<0.000 01).(3)In terms of headache intensity, when headache intensity was scored by pain intensity, Yangxue Qingnao Granules combined with calcium channel blocker was better than calcium channel blocker(MD=-0.70, 95%CI[-0.81,-0.59], P<0.000 01), when headache intensity was scored by VAS score, Yangxue Qingnao Granules combined with calcium channel blocker was better than calcium channel blocker(MD=-1.59, 95%CI[-2.13,-1.06], P<0.000 01).(4)In terms of reducing headache duration, Yangxue Qingnao Granules combined with calcium channel blocker was better than calcium channel blocker(SMD=-3.13, 95%CI[-4.12,-2.15], P<0.000 01). GRADE system showed that the evidence level of the above outcome indicators was low and extremely low. Twelve cases of adverse reactions were reported, all of which were mild. The results showed that the combination of Yang-xue Qingnao Granules can improve the effective rate, reduce the headache frequency, the headache intensity and the headache duration, and had good safety and low incidence of adverse reactions compared with the single calcium channel blocker. However, there was no difference in the effective rate between Yangxue Qingnao Granules alone and calcium channel blocker. In view of the low quality of this study, which affects the reliability of the conclusion, it is necessary to use the conclusion of this study carefully, and more high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to further verify in the future.

RESUMO

In this study, common prescriptions were retrieved from existing data in multiple ways to determine the selection principle of common formulas in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) clinical practice guidelines. Taking the selection of common prescriptions in the clinical practice guidelines of TCM for migraine as an example, we searched common prescriptions for migraines from National Essential Medicine List, the National Drug Catalog for Basic Medical Insurance, Work-related Injury Insurance, and Maternity Insurance, Chinese Pharmacopoeia, three teaching materials and two clinical practice guidelines, and we also electronically searched CNKI, VIP, WanFang about famous clinical experience for migraine published from 1990 to 2019. At the same time, 32 prescriptions commonly used by experts in the clinical questionnaire survey were collected to summarize and analyze the TCM clinically applicable syndrome types and medication rules of the included prescriptions and medicines. From the National Essential Medicine List, the National Drug Catalog for Basic Medical Insurance, Work-related Injury Insurance, and Maternity Insurance, Chinese Pharmacopoeia, we got 12 Chinese patent medicines. From the teaching materials, we got 9 prescriptions. From the clinical practice guidelines, we got 8 prescriptions. We got 3 prescriptions from the experience of famous experts and got 4 prescriptions from experts in the clinical questionnaire survey. A total of 24 prescriptions were included from the above results. External wind syndrome, syndrome of blood stasis and brain blocking, and syndrome of liver Yang transforming into wind were the common syndrome types in the treatment of migraine. Chuanxiong Rhizoma and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix were the most common Chinese herbs in the prescriptions. Chuanxiong Rhizoma-Angelicae Dahuricae Radix was the most common drug pair for the treatment of migraine. By retrieving the data such as the famous clinical experience and teaching materials, we systematically summarized the prescriptions in the treatment of migraine in this study, which can provide a basis for the selection of traditional Chinese medicines in clinical practice guidelines.

RESUMO

Carboprost tromethamine is a synthetic prostaglandin derivative, which can effectively promote law contraction of the uterus and significantly reduce the amount of bleeding during and after delivery. In this study, we explored the effect of carboprost tromethamine on the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage after cesarean section and the effect on coagulation function and hemodynamics. At the same time, the effects of oxytocin and carboprost tromethamine were studied in different groups. The results showed that the amount of 2h bleeding (256.7±65.21) mL and the amount of 24h hemorrhage (308.3±78.3) after the operation were significantly decreased, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). After the operation, the levels of APTT, TT and Fib in the two groups were significantly lower than those before the operation. The levels of SBP (119.4±8.24) mmHg and DBP (79.6±6.21) mmHg in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. In summary, carboprost tromethamine has a significant effect on the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage in cesarean section, and has a significant effect on improving the state of hypercoagulable blood and maintaining the stable hemodynamic state, which has clinical a value.

RESUMO

Two thermophilic ß-mannanases (ManA and ManB)were successfully expressed in Yarrowialipolytica using vector pINA1296I. The sequences of manA from Aspergillus niger CBS 513.88 and manB from Bacillus subtilis BCC41051 were optimized based on codon-usage bias in Y.lipolytica and synthesized by overlapping polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We utilized the pINA1296I vector, which allows inserting and expression of multiple copies of an expression cassette, to engineer recombinant strains containing multiple copies of manA or manB. Following verification of target-gene expression by quantitative PCR, fermentation experiments indicated that recombinant protein levels and enzyme activity increased along with increasing manA/manB copy number. After production in a 10 l fermenter, we obtained maximum enzyme activity from strains YLA6 and YLB6 of3024 U/mL and 1024 U/mL, respectively. Additionally, purification and characterization results revealed that the optimum pH and temperature for manA activity were pH∼5 and ∼70 °C, and for manB activity were pH∼7 and 60 °C, respectively. These results indicated that the thermo stabilities of these two enzymes were higher than most other mannanases, making them potentially useful for industrial applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We applied a meta-analysis to explore the effect of ulinastatin (UTI) on the serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in Asian patients with acute pancreatitis (AP). METHODS: Various databases were searched based on stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria to extract relevant cohort studies. Comprehensive Meta-analysis 2.0 (Biostat Inc., Englewood, NJ, USA) was applied for statistical analyses. RESULTS: A total of 113 relevant studies (67 in Chinese, 46 in English) were initially retrieved. Finally, 11 eligible studies were enrolled in our meta-analysis with 399 pancreatitis patients. Meta-analysis results showed that after being treated with UTI, the serum levels of CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α were evidently decreased (CRP: SMD = -2.697, 95% CI = -4.399 ~ -0.994, p = 0.002; IL-6: SMD = -5.268, 95% CI = -9.850 ~ -0.687, p = 0.024; TNF-α: SMD = -5.666, 95% CI = -11.083 ~ -0.249, p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: UTI can effectively reduce the serum levels of CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α in Asian patients with AP, suggesting that UTI has anti-inflammatory effect on Asian patients with AP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tortuous blood vessels are commonly seen in the cerebral arteries. The association between vertebrobasilar artery tortuosity and vascular vertigo remains obscure. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe two patients with vascular vertigo who had bilateral curving and spiral looping in multiple segments of the vertebral arteries and also exhibited basilar artery tortuosity. Both patients had cerebrovascular risk factors and exhibited clinical features of vertigo with high severity, slow recovery, and recurrent tendencies. Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography of the neck showed bilateral tortuosity in the V2 segments and spiral twisting in the V4 segments of the vertebral arteries, and basilar artery curving. No obvious sign of atherosclerotic stenosis was found in the vertebrobasilar arteries and no abnormalities were observed in the internal carotid arteries. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound showed decreased blood flow in tortuous vertebrobasilar arteries. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials showed that the interpeak latencies (IPL) of waves III-IV were prolonged, with a ratio of IPL III-V/IPL I-III > 1. CONCLUSIONS: Vertebrobasilar tortuosity in combination with cerebrovascular risk factors may lead to vascular vertigo in these patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Cigarette smoking has been confirmed as a factor influencing arterial blood pressure. In the present study, we studied whether cigarette smoking habits were still associated with arterial blood pressure among Chinese nonagenarians/centenarians. METHODS: The present study analyzed data from a survey conducted on all residents aged 90 years or more in the DuJiangYan district (in total 2,311,709 inhabitants) in 2005. RESULTS: The individuals included in the statistical analysis were 216 men and 445 women. Individuals who were heavy smokers (76.62 ± 13.28 mmHg) had higher diastolic blood pressure, compared with medium and light smokers (72.33 ± 12.98 and 70.28 ± 10.31 mmHg) (F = 3.551, p = 0.030). There was a higher prevalence of diastolic hypertension (21.62% vs 5.75% and 7.14%, χ(2 =) 6.302, p = 0.043). Furthermore, there was a higher risk for diastolic hypertension in heavy smokers (OR = 3.886, 95% CI 1.241-12.161) (adjusted) compared with medium (OR = 1.475, 95% CI 0.599-3.360) and light smokers (1.00 reference). There was, however, no significant difference in systolic blood pressure or prevalence of systolic hypertension among the different smoking groups. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, we found that among Chinese nonagenarians/centenarians, heavy smoking (current or former) could increase diastolic blood pressure and prevalence of diastolic hypertension, but was not associated with changes in systolic blood pressure.
