RESUMO

Doping in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) has received extensive attention for its prospect in the application of photoelectric devices. Currently researchers focus on the doping ability and doping distribution in monolayer TMD and have obtained a series of achievements. Bilayer TMD has more excellent properties compared with monolayer TMD. Moreover, bilayer TMD with different stacking structures presents varying performance due to the difference in interlayer coupling. Herein, this work focuses on doping ability of dopants in different bilayer stacking structures that has not been studied yet. Results of this work show that the doping ability of V atoms in bilayer AA' and AB stacked WS2 is different, and the doping concentration of V atoms in AB stacked WS2 is higher than in AA' stacked WS2. Moreover, dopants from top and bottom layer can be distinguished by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) image. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further confirms the doping rule. This study reveals the mechanism of the different doping ability caused by stacking structures in bilayer TMD and lays a foundation for further preparation of controllable-doping bilayer TMD materials.

Serratia sp. ATCC 39006 is an important model strain for the study of prodigiosin production, whose prodigiosin biosynthesis genes (pigA-O) are arranged in an operon. Several transcription factors have been shown to control the transcription of the pig operon. However, since the regulation of prodigiosin biosynthesis is complex, the regulatory mechanism for this process has not been well established. In most γ-proteobacteria, the ROK family regulator NagC acts as a global transcription factor in response to N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). In Serratia sp. ATCC 39006, NagC represses the transcription of two divergent operons, nagE and nagBAC, which encode proteins involved in the transport and metabolism of GlcNAc. Moreover, NagC directly binds to a 21-nt region that partially overlaps the -10 and -35 regions of the pig promoter and promotes the transcription of prodigiosin biosynthesis genes, thereby increasing prodigiosin production. Although NagC still acts as both repressor and activator in Serratia sp. ATCC 39006, its transcriptional regulatory activity is independent of GlcNAc. NagC was first found to regulate antibiotic biosynthesis in Gram-negative bacteria, and NagC-mediated regulation is not responsive to GlcNAc, which contributes to future studies on the regulation of secondary metabolism by NagC in other bacteria. IMPORTANCE: The ROK family transcription factor NagC is an important global regulator in the γ-proteobacteria. A large number of genes involved in the transport and metabolism of sugars, as well as those associated with biofilm formation and pathogenicity, are regulated by NagC. In all of these regulations, the transcriptional regulatory activity of NagC responds to the supply of GlcNAc in the environment. Here, we found for the first time that NagC can regulate antibiotic biosynthesis, whose transcriptional regulatory activity is independent of GlcNAc. This suggests that NagC may respond to more signals and regulate more physiological processes in Gram-negative bacteria.

Although functional studies on carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) have been carried out extensively, the role of tandem CBMs in the enzyme containing multiple catalytic domains (CDs) is unclear. Here, we identified a multidomain enzyme (Lc25986) with a novel modular structure from lignocellulolytic bacterial consortium. It consists of a mannanase domain, two CBM65 domains (LcCBM65-1/LcCBM65-2), and an esterase domain. To investigate CBM function and domain interactions, full-length Lc25986 and its variants were constructed and used for enzymatic activity, binding, and bioinformatic analyses. The results showed that LcCBM65-1 and LcCBM65-2 both bind mannan and xyloglucan but not cellulose or ß-1,3-1,4-glucan, which differs from the ligand specificity of reported CBM65s. Compared to LcCBM65-2, LcCBM65-1 showed a stronger ligand affinity and a preference for acetylation sites. Both CBM65s stimulated the enzymatic activities of their respective neighboring CDs against acetylated mannan, but did not contribute to the activities of the distal CDs. The time course of mannan hydrolysis indicated that the full-length Lc25986 was more effective in the complete degradation of mixed acetyl/non-acetyl substrates than the mixture of single-CD mutants. When acting on complex substrates, LcCBM65-1 not only improved the enzymatic activity of the mannanase domain, but also directed the esterase domain to the acetylated polysaccharides. LcCBM65-2 adopted a low affinity to reduce interference with the catalysis of the mannanase domain. These results demonstrate the importance of CBMs for the synergism between the two CDs of a multidomain enzyme and suggest that they contribute to the adequate degradation of complex substrates such as plant cell walls. IMPORTANCE: Lignocellulolytic enzymes, particularly those of bacterial origin, often harbor multiple carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs). However, the function of CBM multivalency remains poorly understood. This is especially true for enzymes that contain more than one catalytic domain (CD), as the interactions between CDs, CBMs, and CDs and CBMs can be complex. Our research demonstrates that homogeneous CBMs can have distinct functions in a multimodular enzyme. The tandem CBMs coordinate the CDs in catalytic conflict through their differences in binding affinity, ligand preference, and arrangement within the full-length enzyme. Additionally, although the synergism between mannanase and esterase is widely acknowledged, our study highlights the benefits of integrating the two enzymes into a single entity for the degradation of complex substrates. In summary, these findings enhance our understanding of the intra-synergism of a multimodular enzyme and emphasize the significance of multiple CBMs in this context.

Starting from the Rayleigh-Rice perturbation theory, this paper derives the empirical Harvey scatter model and ABg scatter model applied extensively in optical analysis software packages and verifies the shift-invariant behavior of the scattered radiance in direction cosine space. Using data obtained from multi-wavelength laser scatterometer on carbon nanotube black coating and pineblack coating, we establish the polynomial model based on the sine of the scattering angle plus the sine of the specular reflection angle, i.e., sin θs+sin θ0 and the dual-Harvey model based on sin θs-sin θ0 , respectively. The models are in good accordance with the experimental data and further extend the valid range of empirical models.

Human activity and climate change affect biodiversity and cause species range shifts, contractions, and expansions. Globally, human activities and climate change have emerged as persistent threats to biodiversity, leading to approximately 68% of the ~522 primate species being threatened with extinction. Here, we used habitat suitability models and integrated data on human population density, gross domestic product (GDP), road construction, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the location of protected areas (PAs), and climate change to predict potential changes in the distributional range and richness of 26 China's primate species. Our results indicate that both PAs and NDVI have a positive impact on primate distributions. With increasing anthropogenic pressure, species' ranges were restricted to areas of high vegetation cover and in PAs surrounded by buffer zones of 2.7-4.5 km and a core area of PAs at least 0.1-0.5 km from the closest edge of the PA. Areas with a GDP below the Chinese national average of 100,000 yuan were found to be ecologically vulnerable, and this had a negative impact on primate distributions. Changes in temperature and precipitation were also significant contributors to a reduction in the range of primate species. Under the expected influence of climate change over the next 30-50 years, we found that highly suitable habitat for primates will continue to decrease and species will be restricted to smaller and more peripheral parts of their current range. Areas of high primate diversity are expected to lose from 3 to 7 species. We recommend that immediate action be taken, including expanding China's National Park Program, the Ecological Conservation Redline Program, and the Natural Forest Protection Program, along with a stronger national policy promoting alternative/sustainable livelihoods for people in the local communities adjacent to primate ranges, to offset the detrimental effects of anthropogenic activities and climate change on primate survivorship.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory (EM) deteriorates as a result of normal aging as well as Alzheimer's disease. The neural underpinnings of such age-related memory impairments in older individuals are not well-understood. Although previous research has unveiled the association between gray matter volume (GMV) and EM in the elderly population, such findings exhibit variances across distinct age cohorts. Consequently, an investigation into the dynamic evolution of this relationship with advancing age is imperative. RESULT: The present study utilized a sliding window approach to examine how the correlation between EM and GMV varied with age in a cross-sectional sample of 926 Chinese older adults. We found that both verbal EM (VEM) and spatial EM (SEM) exhibited positive correlations with GMV in extensive areas primarily in the temporal and frontal lobes and that these correlations typically became stronger with older age. Moreover, there were variations in the strength of the correlation between EM and GMV with age, which differed based on sex and the specific type of EM. Specifically, the association between VEM and GMVs in the insula and parietal regions became stronger with age for females but not for males, whereas the association between SEM and GMVs in the parietal and occipital regions became stronger for males but not for females. At the brain system level, there is a significant age-related increase in the correlations between both types of EM and the GMV of both the anterior temporal (AT) system and the posterior medial (PM) system in male group. In females, both types of EM show stronger age-related correlations with the GMV of the AT system compared to males. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed a significant positive correlation between GMV in most regions associated with EM and age, particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes. This discovery offers new insights into the connection between brain structure and the diminishing episodic memory function among older individuals.

BACKGROUND: The status of mineral and bone disorder (MBD) after kidney transplantation is not fully understood, and the assessment of abnormal mineral and bone metabolism in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) has not been standardized. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 292 KTRs in our center. The levels of biochemical markers of bone metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed. We evaluated the influencing factors of BMD using linear regression analysis. And correlation test was used for the correlation analysis between bone metabolism indicators and other indicators. RESULTS: Postoperative MBD mainly manifested as hypercalcemia (8.9%), hypophosphatemia (27.1%), low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25(OH)vitD) (67.0%), hyperparathyroidism (50.6%), and high levels of bone turnover markers (BTMs). The prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in the femoral neck (FN) and lumbar spine (LS) was 20.1%/2.8% and 26.1%/3.6%, respectively. Multivariate analysis indicated that FN BMD was positively associated with body mass index (BMI) and negatively associated with acute rejection history (p < 0.05); while LS BMD was positively associated with BMI, and negatively associated with intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) (p < 0.05). Biochemical markers of bone metabolism were affected by age, sex, preoperative dialysis mode and time, postoperative time, transplanted kidney function, and iPTH levels. LS BMD was negatively correlated with iPTH and BTMs (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: MBD persisted after kidney transplantation. Decreased bone mass was associated with persistent hyperparathyroidism, acute rejection history, low BMI, advanced age, and menopause. Dynamic monitoring of bone metabolism index and BMD helps to assess MBD after kidney transplantation.

PURPOSE: The study aims to compare morphology and location of crystalline lens between acute acquired concomitant esotropia (AACE) patients and control subjects, both before and after cycloplegia. METHODS: This is a prospective and observational clinical study. Morphological and locational parameters of the crystalline lens in 53 AACE patients and 32 control subjects were assessed before and after cycloplegia using CASIA2 system, which represents the latest swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Cycloplegic refraction was recorded by administering 1% atropine in patients younger than 12 years and 1% cyclopentolate in those > 12 years old. Morphological parameters included anterior radius of curvature (ARC), posterior radius of curvature (PRC), lens thickness (LTH), and equivalent diameter of lens (LED). Locational parameters comprised lens decentration (LD) and lens tilt (LT). Comparison of these parameters before and after cycloplegia were conducted between AACE and controls. Additionally, the study analyzed and compared the changes in these parameter post-cycloplegia. RESULTS: Our findings suggest no significant difference in morphological parameters including ARC, PRC, LTH and LED between AACE patients and controls before or after cycloplegia. However, 2D-modeling data in the 0° meridian revealed that variation post-cycloplegia of LD (lens shift) in right eyes was different in AACE patients, measuring - 0.03(0.08) [median(interquartile range)] which was significantly distinct from the control group, exhibiting a measurement of 0.01(0.06) (z = - 2.373, p = 0.018). In left eyes, a similar trend was observed with lens shift in the 0° meridian being 0.02(0.06) in AACE, significantly differing from control group's measurement of - 0.02(0.08) (z = - 2.809, p = 0.005). Further, correlation analysis revealed that larger temporal shift of lens was associated with greater changes in ARC (r = 0.294, p = 0.006) and LTH (r = - 0.230, p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: The morphological features of the crystalline lens were similar in AACE patients and controls; however, the change of lens location by cycloplegia was observed only in AACE patients, suggesting an association with excessive accommodation.

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a common cranial nerve disease. In HFS research, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to examine the development and research trends. A retrieval of HFS studies published between 2011 and 2022 was performed from the Web of Science Core Collection in September 2022. Two scientometric tools were used to perform bibliometric and visualization-based analyses: VOSviewer and CiteSpace. Bibliometric analysis of 1461 studies published between 2011 and 2022 was carried out using data from 444 journals, 6021 authors, 1732 institutions, and 76 countries/regions. China, the USA, Japan, and South Korea were four key contributors to this study. Shanghai Jiaotong University was the major institution with the larger number of publications. Li Shiting was the most prolific author. Jannetta PJ was the most co-cited author. World Neurosurgery was the top prolific journal. Journal of Neurosurgery was the top co-cited journal. The top five keywords were hemifacial spasm, microvascular decompression, trigeminal neuralgia, surgery, and neurovascular compression. This study examines the research trends in global scientific research on HFS over the last decade. Researchers interested in learning more about current trends and novel research frontiers in this area can benefit from the study.

BACKGROUND: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) has been linked to the severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) prognosis, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear. It has been reported that pyroptosis worsens SAP. The present study aimed to verify whether mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT, a component of VAT) can cause secondary intestinal injury through the pyroptotic pathway. METHODS: Thirty-six male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were divided into six different groups. Twelve rats were randomly divided into the SAP and control groups. We monitored the changes of MAT and B lymphocytes infiltration in MAT of SAP rats. Twelve SAP rats were injected with MAT B lymphocytes or phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The remaining twelve SAP rats were first injected with MAT B lymphocytes, and then with MCC950 (NLRP3 inhibitor) or PBS. We collected blood and tissue samples from pancreas, gut and MAT for analysis. RESULTS: Compared to the control rats, the SAP group showed inflammation in MAT, including higher expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), lower expression of IL-10, and histological changes. Flow cytometry analysis revealed B lymphocytes infiltration in MAT but not T lymphocytes and macrophages. The SAP rats also exhibited intestinal injury, characterized by lower expression of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin, higher levels of lipopolysaccharide and diamine oxidase, and pathological changes. The expression of NLRP3 and n-GSDMD, which are responsible for pyroptosis, was increased in the intestine of SAP rats. The injection of MAT B lymphocytes into SAP rats exacerbated the inflammation in MAT. The upregulation of pyroptosis reduced tight junction in the intestine, which contributed to the SAP progression, including higher inflammatory indicators and worse histological changes. The administration of MCC950 to SAP + MAT B rats downregulated pyroptosis, which subsequently improved the intestinal barrier and ameliorated inflammatory response of SAP. CONCLUSIONS: In SAP, MAT B lymphocytes aggravated local inflammation, and promoted the injury to the intestine through the enteric pyroptotic pathway.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of left ventricular (LV) remodeling and its association with mineral and bone disorder (MBD) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) have not been systematically studied. We aimed to evaluate LV remodeling changes one year after kidney transplantation (KT) and identify their influencing factors. METHODS: Ninety-five KTRs (68 males; ages 40.2 ± 10.8 years) were followed before and one year after KT. Traditional risk factors and bone metabolism indicators were assessed. Left ventricular mass index (LVMI), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) were measured using two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography. The relationship between MBD and LV remodeling and the factors influencing LV remodeling were analyzed. RESULTS: One year after KT, MBD was partially improved, mainly characterized by hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hyperparathyroidism, 25-(OH) vitamin D deficiency, elevated bone turnover markers, and bone loss. LVMI, the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and the prevalence of LVDD decreased, while LVEF increased. LVH was positively associated with postoperative intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and iPTH nonnormalization. △LVMI was positively associated with preoperative type-I collagen N-terminal peptide and postoperative iPTH. LVEF was negatively associated with postoperative phosphorous. △LVEF was negatively associated with postoperative iPTH. LVDD was positively associated with postoperative lumbar spine osteoporosis. Preoperative LVMI was negatively associated with △LVMI and positively associated with △LVEF. Advanced age, increased BMI, diabetes, longer dialysis time, lower albumin level, and higher total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels were associated with LV remodeling. CONCLUSIONS: LV remodeling partially improved after KT, showing a close relationship with MBD.

In the global context, countries must reduce carbon dioxide emissions to "net zero" by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. China's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve the carbon neutrality target by 2060. To monitor the achievements of the NDCs, establishing an annual-based accounting mechanism is necessary to record the carbon stocks in China, especially for Blue Carbon. The paper aims to present China's first national-scale systematic Blue Carbon accounting for mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses, covering the accounting subjects of physical and monetary assets, as well as relevant indicators for investors. It focuses on the design of the accounting method and system, the selection of data categories applied to this system, and the application of China's Blue Carbon accounting based on this accounting system. Taking Blue Carbon accounting as a starting point, this paper analyses the restoration prospects of these ecosystems and their application potential for NDCs in China compared with the terrestrial ecosystems. The results indicate that mangroves are the most cost-effective type of ecosystem, even compared to terrestrial forests. Thus, the paper provides policymakers with a new perspective on the decision-making of carbon sequestration relevant decisions, aiming to promote the monitoring, restoration, and expansion of China's coastal blue carbon ecosystem through the establishment of a sound Blue Carbon accounting system, and to help achieve the carbon neutrality goal in China's NDCs through regular and systematic monitoring of its national Blue Carbon inventories.

Accurate and sensitive analysis of p53 DNA is important for early diagnosis of cancer. In this work, a fluorescence sensing system based on DNA supersandwich nanowires and cation exchange (CX)-triggered multiplex signal amplification was constructed for the detection of p53 DNA. In the presence of p53 DNA, the DNA self-assembles to form a DNA supersandwich nanowire that generates long double-stranded DNA. Subsequently, the cation exchange (CX) reaction between ZnS and Ag+ was utilized to release free Zn2+. With the participation of Zn2+, DNAzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of numerous catalytic molecular beacons, resulting in a greatly enhanced fluorescence signal due to the cycling of DNAzyme. The fluorescence values increased in proportion to the concentrations of p53 DNA in the range of 10 pM to 200 nM, and a detection limit (LOD) of 2.34 pM (S/N = 3) was obtained. This method provides an effective strategy for the quantitative detection of p53 DNA.

In this study, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on perylene diimide derivatives (PDIs) was developed for the ultrasensitive quantification of dopamine (DA). PDIs were able to form self-assembled semiconductor nanostructures by strong π-π stacking, suitable for photoactive substances. Moreover, the shape of the PDI significantly affected the PEC properties of these nanostructures. The results showed that amino PDI with two-dimensional (2D) wrinkled layered nanostructures exhibited superior PEC properties relative to one-dimensional (1D) nanorods and fiber-based nanostructures (methyl and carboxyl PDIs). Based on these results, a mechanism for PEC sensor action was then proposed. The presence of 2D amino-PDI resulted in accelerated charge separation and transport. Furthermore, dopamine acted as effective electron donor to cause an increase in photocurrent. The as-obtained sensor was then used to detect small molecules like DA. A blue light optimized sensor at an applied potential of 0.7 V showed a detection limit of 1.67 nM with a wide linear range of 5 nM to 10 µM. On the other hand, the sensor presented acceptable reliability in determining DA in real samples. A recovery rate between 97.99 and 101.0% was obtained. Overall, controlling the morphology of semiconductors can influence PEC performance, which is a useful finding for the future development of PEC sensors.

BACKGROUND: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is related to SAP prognosis. As a depot of VAT, mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) resides between pancreas and gut, which might affect SAP and the secondary intestinal injury. AIMS: To investigate the changes of MAT in SAP. METHODS: 24 SD rats were randomly divided into four groups. 18 rats in SAP group were euthanized in time gradients (6 h, 24 h, and 48 h after modeling) and the others in control group. Blood samples and tissues of pancreas, gut, and MAT were taken for analysis. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, SAP rats appeared MAT inflammation, presenting higher mRNA expression of TNF-α and IL-6 and lower IL-10, and histological changes after 6 h of modeling, which became worse over time. Flow cytometry showed that B lymphocytes increased in MAT after 24 h of SAP modeling and lasted up to 48 h, earlier than the changes of T lymphocytes and macrophages. The intestinal barrier integrity was damaged after 6 h of modeling, presenting lower mRNA and protein expression of ZO-1 and occludin, higher serum levels of LPS and DAO, with pathological changes, which gradually aggravated after 24 h and 48 h. SAP rats had higher serum levels of inflammatory indicators and revealed histological inflammation of pancreas, the severity of which increased with the passage of modeling time. CONCLUSION: MAT appeared inflammation in early-stage SAP, and became worse over time, with the same trend as the intestinal barrier injury and the severity of pancreatitis. B lymphocytes infiltrated early in MAT, which might promote the MAT inflammation.

BACKGROUND: The iconic giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), as both a flagship and umbrella species endemic to China, is a world famous symbol for wildlife conservation. The giant panda has several specific biological traits and holds a relatively small place in evolution. A high-quality genome of the giant panda is key to understanding the biology of this vulnerable species. FINDINGS: We generated a 2.48-Gb chromosome-level genome (GPv1) of the giant panda named "Jing Jing" with a contig N50 of 28.56 Mb and scaffold N50 of 134.17 Mb, respectively. The total length of chromosomes (n = 21) was 2.39-Gb, accounting for 96.4% of the whole genome. Compared with the previously published four genomes of the giant panda, our genome is characterized by the highest completeness and the correct sequence orientation. A gap-free and 850 kb length of immunoglobulin heavy-chain gene cluster was manually annotated in close proximity to the telomere of chromosome 14. Additionally, we developed an algorithm to predict the centromere position of each chromosome. We also constructed a complete chromatin structure for "Jing Jing", which includes inter-chromosome interaction pattern, A/B compartment, topologically associated domain (TAD), TAD-clique and promoter-enhancer interaction (PEI). CONCLUSIONS: We presented an improved chromosome-level genome and complete chromatin structure for the giant panda. This is a valuable resource for the future genetic and genomic studies on giant panda.

BACKGROUND: The assessment and prevention of mineral and bone disorder (MBD) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) have not been standardized. This study aimed to evaluate MBD one year after kidney transplantation (KT) and identify the influencing factors of MBD. METHODS: A total of 95 KTRs in our center were enrolled. The changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone metabolism biochemical markers, including serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus(P), 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25(OH)vitD), intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), bone alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin (OC), type I collagen N-terminal peptide and type I collagen C-terminal peptide (CTx), over one year after KT were assessed. The possible influencing factors of BMD were analyzed. The relationships between bone metabolism biochemical markers were evaluated. The indicators between groups with or without iPTH normalization were also compared. RESULTS: MBD after KT was manifested as an increased prevalence of hypophosphatemia and bone loss, persistent 25(OH)vitD deficiency, and partially decreased PTH and bone turnover markers (BTMs). Femoral neck BMD was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI) and postoperative 25(OH)vitD, and negatively correlated with postoperative PTH. Lumbar spine BMD was positively correlated with BMI and preoperative TG, and negatively correlated with preoperative OC and CTx. BMD loss was positively associated with glucocorticoid accumulation. Preoperative and postoperative iPTH was negatively correlated with postoperative serum P and 25(OH)vitD, and positively correlated with postoperative Ca and BTMs. The recipients without iPTH normalization, who accounted for 41.0% of all KTRs, presented with higher Ca, lower P, higher BTMs, advanced age, and a higher prevalence of preoperative parathyroid hyperplasia. CONCLUSIONS: MBD persisted after KT, showing a close relationship with hyperparathyroidism, high bone turnover, and glucocorticoid accumulation.

Increasing extreme temperatures are producing a serious impact on the economies of cities. However, the importance of social factors is typically neglected by the existing research. In this work, we first establish a supply-demand-public expenditure (SDP) framework for assessing and forecasting heat-related economic loss. Compared with the previous framework, SDP possesses a more comprehensive index system and functions that apply to all types of cities. We selected different economic development and geographical locations (Nanjing, Suzhou, and Yancheng) as case studies to verify the wide applicability of the SDP framework. A qualitative analysis and quantitative prediction of heatwaves and socioeconomic factors on losses were conducted for different cities. The results showed that different loss types displayed obvious regional heterogeneity among the cities. The labor value loss was the most significant type, and health loss was the most vulnerable type. In addition, public expenditure played a neglected critical regulatory role. Apart from these, the current level of public expenditure for heat prevention and control remains insufficient. Based on an assessment of the effects of interventions, policymakers need to make more efforts to increase the proportion of heat-related public spending and ensure stable socio-economic development by utilizing pathways with positive intervention potentials.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study analyzed breathing patterns and age subgroups effect on cortical bone quality of the mandible in growing subjects, aiming to explore the application value of facial skeletal pattern combined with cortical bone density detection in early screening diagnosis of mouth breathing. METHODS: One hundred twenty-six participants were divided into four groups: mouth breathing group (7-9, 10-12 years old) and nasal breathing group (7-9, 10-12 years old). The mandibular anterior, middle, and posterior cortical bone mineral density (CBMD), cortical bone width (MCW), ANB, and FMA values were measured. Independent T-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare the measured values. Binary logistic regression was employed to analyze the correlation between measured variables and the children's breathing patterns. ROC analysis was used to determine the ability of the cortical bone density measurements in early screening diagnosis of MB. RESULTS: Mouth breathing had a negative impact on CBMD and MCW of the pre-mandibular (Pog) in subjects aged 7-9 years and also impacted the development of (Pog) and submandibular (Me) sites in subjects aged 10-12 years. Older children in the nasal breathing group have higher CBMD, MCW, and SNB values and lower FMA values. Single-factor and multiple-factor logistic binary regression analysis showed that FMA, MSPogCBMD, MSPogMCW, and ANB are correlated factors for children at risk of mouth breathing. CONCLUSION: Mouth breathing pattern is closely associated with decreased mandibular CBMD and MCW values in children aged 7-12, where the anterior (Pog) and inferior (Me) sites of anterior mandible are more significantly affected. Furthermore, in combination with facial skeletal pattern, it provides a basis for the early warning diagnosis of mouth breathing.

Doublet emission from open-shell molecules has demonstrated its research and application value in recent years. However, understandings of the photoluminescence mechanism of open-shell molecules are far less than that of closed-shell molecules, leading to challenges in molecular design of efficient doublet emission systems. Here we report a cerium(III) 4-(9H-carbozol-9-yl)phenyl-tris(pyrazolyl)borate complex Ce(CzPhTp)3 with a new luminescence mechanism of delayed doublet emission, which also represents the first example with metal-centered delayed photoluminescence. The energy gap between the doublet and triplet excited states of Ce(CzPhTp)3 is reduced by the management of the inner and outer coordination spheres, thereby promoting efficient energy transfer between the two excited states and activating the delayed emission. The photoluminescence mechanism discovered may provide a new way for the design of efficient doublet emission and bring insights into rational molecular design and energy level regulation in open-shell molecules.
