RESUMO

Little is known about below-ground competition in mixed-species plantations under increasing nitrogen (N) deposition. This study aims to determine the effects of N addition on root competition in coniferous and broad-leaved species mixed plantations. A pot experiment was conducted using the coniferous species Cunninghamia lanceolata and the broad-leaved species Phoebe chekiangensis planted in mixed plantations with different competition intensities under N addition (0 or 45 kg N ha-1 yr-1). Biomass allocation, root morphology, root growth level, and competitive ability were determined after five months of treatment. Our findings indicated that root interactions in mixed plantations did not influence biomass allocation in either C. lanceolata or P. chekiangensis but promoted growth in C. lanceolata when no N was added. However, N addition decreased biomass accumulation in both species in the mixed plantation and had a negative effect on the root growth of C. lanceolata due to intensified competition. Addition of N increased the relative importance of root predatory competition in P. chekiangensis, and increased the allelopathic competitive advantage in C. lanceolata. This suggests that N addition causes a shift in the root competitive strategy from tolerance to competition. Overall, these findings highlight the significant impact that the addition of N can have on plant interactions in mixed plantations. Our results provide implications for the mechanisms of root competition in response to increasing atmospheric N deposition in mixed plantations.

RESUMO

Endometrial carcinoma is the most common gynecological tumor in developed countries. Tanshinone IIA is a traditional herbal medicine which is to treat cardiovascular disease and has been shown to have various biological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and antitumor activities. However, there has been no study about the effect of tanshinone IIA on endometrial carcinoma. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the antitumor activity of tanshinone IIA against endometrial carcinoma and investigate the associated molecular mechanism. We demonstrated that tanshinone IIA induced cell apoptosis and inhibited migration. We further demonstrated that tanshinone IIA activated the intrinsic (mitochondrial) apoptotic pathway. Mechanistically, tanshinone IIA induced apoptosis by upregulating TRIB3 expression and inhibiting the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway. In addition, knockdown of TRIB3 with an shRNA lentivirus accelerated proliferation and attenuated inhibition mediated by tanshinone IIA. Finally, we further demonstrated that tanshinone IIA inhibited tumor growth by inducing TRIB3 expression in vivo. In conclusion, these findings suggest that tanshinone IIA has a significant antitumor effect by inducing apoptosis and may be used as a drug for the treatment of endometrial carcinoma.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity and nitrogen (N) deposition are two major environmental stresses which can affect plant growth. It's less clear that how the combined Cd accumulation and N deposition affect the male and female plants of dioecious species. The aim of the present study was to detect sex-specific responses to Cd stress and simulated N deposition in one-year-old male, female and hermaphrodite seedlings of Morus alba. Changes in morphology, physiology, root architecture and biomass of the three sex types of mulberry seedlings were determined. The results showed that Cd toxicity caused limited growth, impaired photosynthetic apparatus and decreased gas exchange rates with significant sex-specific differences. Mulberry was found to deploy detoxification mechanisms to avoid or tolerate toxic Cd effects through the activation of the antioxidant system, increasing proline and non-protein thiol contents, translocating Cd into different plant parts and decreasing biomass. Females displayed a low tolerance to high Cd and were more sensitive to Cd stress. Simulated N deposition alleviated the negative effects of Cd on leaves and decreased sex-specific differences in the three kinds of mulberry seedlings, but N fertilizer did not affect the total biomass. The N-stimulated increasing in proline and non-protein thiol contents might play a crucial role in resisting the damage caused by Cd stress, and the three kinds of mulberry seedlings had slightly different ways of improving Cd tolerance by N deposition. Sexual differences in Cd accumulation are correlated with root architecture. This study provides evidence for the utilization of mulberry to treat Cd-contaminated soils under N deposition.

RESUMO

The incidence of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) is increasing annually; however, the reported values are likely underestimated. Risk factors for VAIN include advanced age, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, history of hysterectomy, and simultaneous or previous cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical cancer cervical cancer. The most common presentation is abnormal cytology without clinical symptoms. Despite various treatment modalities available, the rate of disease recurrence is high, and its malignant potential has been documented. This study aimed to examine demographic and clinical characteristics and associated treatment outcomes of patients with VAIN. We retrospectively reviewed clinicopathologic data and clinical outcomes of patients diagnosed with VAIN at a single center between January 2010 and December 2017. Overall, 118 patients were included (average age 49.81 ± 9.77 years; range, 26-70 years). The distribution of the histologic grade was as follows: VAIN1, 30.5%; VAIN2, 41.5%; and VAIN3, 28.0%. In total, 97 (82.2%) patients had either prior or simultaneous cervical lesions, CIN (35.6%), or cervical cancer (55, 46.6%). A total of 100 cases (84.7%) were diagnosed using colposcopy and 18 (15.3%) were diagnosed by pathological accident after hysterectomy. Thin-prep cytology test (TCT) results were available for 112 (94.9%) patients, and 111 (94.1%) patients had abnormal cytology findings. Most patients were confirmed as HPV positive (115, 97.5%), and 84 (71.2%) patients were confirmed as positive for high-risk HPV types. Forty-two (35.6%) patients underwent hysterectomy before VAIN diagnosis, and the median interval between hysterectomy and VAIN diagnosis was 26.5 (range: 3-68) months. Most surgical indications were HPV-related diseases (34, 80.9%), such as CIN (8, 19.0%) or cervical cancer (26, 61.9%). Eight patients had no history of cervical lesions. A total of 100 patients underwent initial treatment. During the median follow-up period of 29 (range: 9-96) months, 78 (78%) patients experienced disease remission after initial treatment, 7 (7%) experienced disease recurrence, 10 (10%) had persistent disease, and 5 (5%) had progressive disease. Finally, two patients developed vaginal cancer without death. Colposcopy should be performed before vaginal hysterectomy for VAIN, particularly HPV-related cases. The incidence of VAIN was 20% after hysterectomy owing to non-HPV-related lesions; thus, this part of the screening should not be discontinued. VAIN grade 2,3 and VAIN associated with CIN or cervical cancer are disease types more likely to recur and progress to invasive cancer; active medical intervention is recommended.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of surgery of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion in post-menopausal women needs to be investigated. This study evaluated the clinical significance of cold-knife conization in the diagnosis and surgery of cervical high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions in post-menopausal women. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of post- and pre-menopausal patients with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. All patients received cold-knife conization as the primary therapy. RESULTS: The satisfactory rate of colposcopy was significantly lower in the post-menopausal group than in the pre-menopausal group (38.33 vs. 71.25%; χ2 = 36.202, P < 0.001). The overall positive margin rate of cold-knife conization (25.83 vs 12.50%; χ2 = 10.106, P = 0.001) and rate of positive endocervical cone margins (16.67 vs. 4.58%; χ2 = 14.843, P < 0.001) were significantly higher in the post-menopausal group. Moreover, 49 post- and 60 pre-menopausal women underwent subsequent surgical treatment (40.83 vs. 25.00%). Residual rate of positive and negative margins in patients before and after menopause was significantly different (χ2 = 5.711, P = 0.017; χ2 = 12.726, P < 0.001, respectively). The recurrence rate in post-menopausal women remained 3.85%. CONCLUSIONS: Cold-knife conization can be performed as a primary procedure for diagnosis and surgery of post-menopausal patients with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. Sufficient deep excisions are necessary to avoid positive endocervical margins, which can reduce the residual and recurrence of postoperative lesions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine the feasibility of a personalized music intervention with mechanically ventilated patients in the PICU. DESIGN: Pilot study with a quasi-experimental design. SETTING: Tertiary children's hospital in China with a 40-bed PICU. PATIENTS: Children, 1 month to 7 years, with mechanical ventilation were recruited and assigned to music group (n = 25) and control group (n = 25). INTERVENTIONS: Children in the music group received their own favorite music and listened for 60 minutes three times a day. The control group receive routine care without music. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Primary outcome measure was comfort measured with the COMFORT Behavior scale 5 minutes before and after the music. Secondary outcome measures were physiologic variables; heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation. Mechanical ventilation time, length of stay, and sedation medication were also collected. Qualitative analysis revealed that nurses had a positive attitude in delivering the interventions and identified improvements for the main trial. Children in the music group had lower COMFORT Behavior scores (15.7 vs 17.6; p = 0.011). Children in the music group had better physiologic outcomes; heart rate (140 vs 144; p = 0.039), respiration rate (40 vs 43; p = 0.036), systolic blood pressure (93 vs 95 mm Hg; p = 0.031), oxygen saturation (96% vs 95%; p < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure was not significantly (52 vs 53 mm Hg; p = 0.11). Children in the music group had a shorter ventilation time (148.7 vs 187.6; p = 0.044) and a shorter length of stay, but not significant (11.2 vs 13.8; p = 0.071). Children in the control group had higher total amount of on-demand midazolam (29 vs 33 mg; p = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS: Our pilot study indicates that personalized music intervention is feasible and might improve the comfort of children with mechanical ventilation. Further studies are needed to provide conclusive evidence in confirming the effectiveness of music interventions comforting critically ill children in PICUs.

RESUMO

Combined effects of cadmium (Cd) and acid rain on physiological characteristics in Eleocarpus glabripetalus seedlings were investigated under controlled conditions. The single Cd treatment and the combined Cd and acid rain treatment increased growth at low Cd concentrations, while decreased growth and photosynthesis at high Cd2+ concentrations. A low Cd2+ concentration (50 mg kg-1) combined with different acid rain treatments increased the seedling biomass. A high Cd2+ concentration (100 mg kg-1) under different acid rain treatments significantly decreased the biomass, the Fe content, chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic parameters. Relative electric conductivity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and peroxidase (POD) activity were increased while the reduced glutathione (GSH) content and catalase (CAT) activity were significantly lower at high Cd2+ concentration under acid rain. The results indicated that the combination of a high concentration of Cd2+ and acid rain aggravated the toxic effect of Cd2+ or acid rain alone on the growth and physiological parameters of E. glabripetalus due to serious damage to the chloroplast structure. These results provide novel insights into the combined effects of Cd2+and acid rain on woody plants and might also serve as a guide to evaluate forest restoration and biological safety in areas with Cd2+and acid rain pollution.

RESUMO

Aqueous-dispersed nanocrystalline cellulose functionalized-reduced graphene oxide (NCC-RGO) nanosheets (the precursor of the composite papers) were prepared via the reaction of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, NCC, and ascorbic acid. In this reaction, stiff rod-like NCC was attached to the surface of GO nanosheets via hydrogen bond interactions, which prevented the agglomeration of the nanosheets as the surface oxygen-containing functional groups were removed by ascorbic acid The NCC-RGO composite papers were fabricated using a flow-induced self-assembly strategy with vacuum filtration. NCC-RGO nanosheets underwent layer-by-layer self-assembly on the filter membrane as water permeated the membrane. The structures as well as the electrical and mechanical properties of the NCC-RGO nanosheets and the NCC-RGO composite papers were investigated. The results revealed that the aqueous dispersions of the NCC-RGO nanosheets exhibited long-term stability, consequently producing well-aligned, robust, electrically conductive NCC-RGO composite papers.

RESUMO

In this Communication, we develop a two-step acyclic diene metathesis in situ polymerization/cross-linking method to synthesize uniaxially aligned main-chain liquid crystal elastomers with chemically bonded near-infrared absorbing four-alkenyl-tailed croconaine-core cross-linkers. Because of the extraordinary photothermal conversion property, such a soft actuator material can raise its local temperature from 18 to 260 °C in 8 s, and lift up burdens 5600 times heavier than its own weight, under 808 nm near-infrared irradiation.

RESUMO

Seed-mediated synthesis of gold nanorods (AuNRs) has been widely used for diverse applications in the past decade. In this work, this synthetic process is demonstrated for multicolor biosensing for the first time. Our investigation reveals that ascorbic acid acts as a key factor to mediate the growth of AuNRs. This phenomenon is incorporated into the alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) system based on the fact that ALP can catalyze the conversion of ascorbic acid-phosphate into ascorbic acid with high efficiency. This allows us to develop a multicolor ELISA approach for sensitive detection of disease biomarkers with the naked eye. We show the proof-of-concept multicolor ELISA for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in human serum. The results show that different colors are presented in response to different concentrations of PSA, and a detection limit of 3 × 10(-15) g mL(-1) in human serum was achieved. The proposed multicolor ELISA could be a good supplement to conventional ELISA for POC diagnostics.

RESUMO

Polygalae Radix: is the dried root of Polygala tenuifolia Willd. or Polygala sibirica L., which has the effect of improving memory and cognitive function in traditional Chinese medicine. Modern pharmacological studies indicated that Polygalae Radix has rich pharmacological activities in vitro and in vivo, including protective effects on the nervous system, immune system, cardiovascular system and respiratory system, as well as antioxidant and antiepileptic pharmacological activities. Up to now, more than 160 metabolites from Polygalae Radix were identified, including triterpenoid saponins, xanthones, oligosaccharide esters and et al. The clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine has proved that Polygalae Radix has a certain irritation to the throat, and a large or long-term use will stimulate the digestive tract, and the main toxic metabolite is saponins. Therefore, Polygalae Radix should be pr ocessed or used in combination with other Chinese herbal medicines to reduce the irritation to the throat and reduce gastrointestinal irritation. This article provides a review of the metabolites, pharmacological activity, and toxicology of Polygalae Radix. It also discusses the future research prospects and existing problems of Polygalae Radix, providing reference for further research on Polygalae Radix.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metformin (MET), a worldwide used drug for treating type 2 diabetes but not metabolized by humans, has been found with the largest amount in the aquatic environment. Two MET chlorination byproducts, including Y and C, were transformed into drinking water during chlorination. However, the potential toxicity of the byproducts in hepatotoxicity and reproduction toxicity remains unclear. METHODS: The TOPKAT database predicted the toxicological properties of metformin disinfection by-products. The targets of metformin disinfection by-products were mainly obtained from the PharmMapper database, and then the targets of hepatotoxicity and reproductive toxicity were screened from GeneCards. The overlapping targets of toxic component targets and the hepatotoxicity or reproduction toxicity targets were regarded as the key targets. Then, the STRING database analyzed the key target to construct a protein-protein interaction network (PPI) and GO, and KEGG analysis was performed by the DAVID platform. Meanwhile, the PPI network and compound- target network were constructed by Cytoscape 3.9.1. Finally, Discovery Studio 2019 software was used for molecular docking verification of the two toxic compounds and the core genes. RESULTS: Y and C exhibited hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity evaluated by TOPKAT. There were 22 potential targets relating to compound Y and hepatotoxicity and reproduction toxicity and 14 potential targets relating to compound C and hepatotoxicity and reproduction toxicity. PPI network analysis showed that SRC, MAPK14, F2, PTPN1, IL2, MMP3, HRAS, and RARA might be the key targets; the KEGG analysis indicated that compounds Y and C caused hepatotoxicity through Hepatitis B, Pathways in cancer, Chemical carcinogenesis-reactive oxygen species, Epstein-Barr virus infection; compound Y and C caused reproduction toxicity through GnRH signaling pathway, Endocrine resistance, Prostate cancer, Progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation. Molecular docking results showed that 2 compounds could fit in the binding pocket of the 7 hub genes. CONCLUSION: This study preliminarily revealed the potential toxicity and possible toxicity mechanism of metformin disinfection by-products and provided a new idea for follow-up research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The rapid dissemination of the mcr-1 gene via plasmid-mediated transfer has raised concerns regarding the efficacy of colistin as a last-resort treatment for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. Current mcr-1 gene detection methods mainly focus on cultured bacteria, which is a complex and time-consuming process requiring skilled personnel, making it unsuitable for field analysis. METHODS: A rapid detection technique combining recombinase polymerase amplification with a lateral flow dipstick targeting uncultured clinical samples was developed. RESULTS: This new method targeting the mcr-1 gene region (23 232-23 642 bp, no. KP347127.1) achieved a low detection limit of 10 copies/µL. The whole process was carried out with high specificity and was completed within 20 min. The evaluation assay was conducted using 45 human faecal samples; 16 strains yielded a 98% accuracy, closely matching antimicrobial susceptibility outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The novel method integrates nucleic acid extraction, isothermal amplification, and a test assay, suggesting the potential for timely colistin resistance surveillance in frontline disease control and healthcare settings, supporting future prevention and clinical standardization efforts.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features of capillary leak syndrome (CLS) in children with sepsis, and to analyze its risk factors. METHODS: Clinical data of 384 children with sepsis was studied retrospectively. They included 304 cases of general sepsis, 54 cases of severe sepsis and 26 cases of septic shock, and were divided into non-CLS (n=356) and CLS groups (n=28). Univariate analysis was performed for each of the following variables: sex, age, malnutrition, anemia, coagulation disorders, white blood cell count, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, blood glucose, lactic acid, Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PRISM) III score, pediatric critical illness score (PICS), severe sepsis and number of failed organs≥3. The statistically significant variables (as independent variables) were subjected to multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The incidence rate of CLS in children with septic shock, severe sepsis and general sepsis were 42.3%, 20.1% and 1.3%, respectively, with significant differences among them (P<0.01). There were significant differences in anemia, coagulation disorders, CRP, PCT>2 ng/mL, TNF, IL-1, IL-6, blood glucose, lactic acid, PRISM III score, PICS and number of failed organs≥3 between the non-CLS and CLS groups (P<0.05). Severe sepsis/shock and PRISM III score were the independent risk factors for CLS in children with sepsis. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of sepsis and PRISM III score are positively correlated with the incidence of CLS in children with sepsis. Early monitoring of such factors as infection markers and blood glucose in children with severe sepsis and high PRISM III score may contribute to early diagnosis and effective intervention, thus reducing the mortality from CLS in children with sepsis.

RESUMO

Background: Colposcopy is recommended once human papillomavirus (HPV)16/18 infection is detected. However, not all HPV16/18-positive women will necessarily develop cervical lesions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the application of quantitative HPV16 E7 oncoprotein detection as a cervical cancer screening method for more efficient screening while minimizing unnecessary colposcopy. Methods: E7 oncoprotein (HPV16) was quantitatively detected in cervical exfoliated cells of HPV16-positive women. The levels of HPV16 E7 oncoprotein in different degrees of cervical lesions were compared, and the optimal cut-off value for identifying HSIL+ was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. With a pathological diagnosis as the gold standard, the sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and Kappa value were calculated to verify the diagnostic value of the method. Women diagnosed with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) and normal women were followed up for 5 years to evaluate the predictive value of HPV16 E7 protein for disease progression/persistent infection. Results: The expression level of HPV16 E7 oncoprotein was positively correlated with the degree of the cervical lesion (r = 0.589, P < 0.01). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.817 (confidence interval: 0.729-0.904). The cut-off value of E7 oncoprotein for identifying HSIL+ was 8.68 ng/ml. The SEN, SPE, PPV, NPV, and Kappa values of HPV16 E7 oncoprotein for the identification of HSIL+ were 87.1%,70.0%, 87.1%, 70.0%, and 0.571, respectively, which were higher than those of ThinPrep cytology test (TCT). The SEN, SPE, PPV, and NPV of HPV16 E7 oncoprotein in predicting disease progression/persistent infection were 93.75%, 91.30%, 88.24%, and 95.45%, respectively. Conclusion: The quantitative detection of HPV 16 E7 oncoprotein can not only accurately screen cervical lesions but also achieve efficient colposcopy referral. Additionally, HPV16 E7 oncoprotein can accurately predict the progression of cervical lesions and persistent HPV infection.

RESUMO

It is well known that conservation tillage can improve soil quality, such as soil organic matters. However, limited information on the conservation tillage impacts on pesticides has been reported, which is important to food security. To explore the specific effects of conservation tillage on herbicide residues in soils, parallel soil samples from seven sites under traditional tillage and conservation tillage were collected, respectively, in Jilin Province, Northeast China. The soil properties and characteristics of three herbicides(acetochlor, atrazine, and MCPA-Na) were measured. The results showed that conservation tillage significantly increased total organic carbon(TOC) content, soil water content, and the average particle size of soil aggregates[(2.1±0.1)%, (19.1±1.2)%, and (82.2±3.0) µm increased to(2.9±0.3)%, (22.3±1.5)%, and (97.2±4.2) µm, respectively]. The results also showed that different herbicides were correlated with different soil properties. For example, TOC content and soil water content were positively correlated with atrazine, whereas micro-aggregate content was negatively correlated with acetochlor. Therefore, the effects of conservation tillage on the three herbicide residues were different. For instance, conservation tillage significantly increased the residual amount of atrazine[from(3.8±0.3) ng·g-1 to (17.7±3.0) ng·g-1] in the Dongfeng site by increasing TOC content, whereas it significantly reduced the residual amount of acetochlor[from (50.6±10.3) ng·g-1 to (9.2±2.5) ng·g-1] in the Dehui site by increasing the average particle size of soil aggregates. Generally, this study suggests conservation tillage indeed affected herbicide residues in soils by affecting soil properties. However, the influence of conservation tillage on herbicide residue was dependent on the types of herbicides due to the complex effects of different soil properties on herbicide migration and degradation.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to develop a tool to measure paediatric specialist nurses' core competencies and examine the scale's validity and reliability. DESIGN: An exploratory quantitative study. METHODS: This study was performed in April 2022 with 302 paediatric specialist nurses in mainland China. Items were created through a literature review, a qualitative interview, and the Delphi method. The data were evaluated using descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, explanatory factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, Cronbach's alpha coefficient and split-half reliability. RESULTS: The final scale consisted of five factors and 32 items. The factors were communication, coordination and judgement abilities; professional technology mastery ability; specialist knowledge mastery ability; medical-related processes; and evidence-based nursing competencies. The explained total variance of the five factors was 62.216%. The scale-level and item-level CVI of this scale was 1.00, and the mean CVR of the total scale was 0.788. The Pearson correlation coefficients of each dimension and the total dimension of the scale was 0.709-0.892, and within each dimension, it was 0.435-0.651. The Cronbach's α of this scale was 0.944, and its split-half reliability was 0.883.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Yiyi Fuzi Baijiang formula (YFB) is a traditional Chinese medicine prescription composed of Coix seed, Radix Aconiti Lateralis and Patrinia villosa, which has been used to treat ulcerative colitis (UC) for thousands of years. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the therapeutic effect and metabolic analysis of YFB formula on UC in rats induced by 2,4,6-trinitro-benzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six main alkaloids in the YFB formula were determined by UPLC‒MS/MS. The rat UC model was induced by TNBS, and the therapeutic effect of YFB formula on UC was evaluated by disease activity index (DAI) score and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. UPLC-QTRAP-MS metabolomics technology was used to screen potential biomarkers for YFB treatment of UC in combination with multivariate data statistics and further analyze related metabolic pathways. Western blotting was used to detect the protein levels of NLRP1, NLRP3, NLRC4, ASC, pro-caspase1 and Caspase-1 in rat liver tissues. ELISA and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the contents of interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-21, IL-22, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-18 in rat serum and liver tissues. RESULTS: The DAI scores of the YFB groups were significantly reduced, and colon tissue injury was significantly improved (p < 0.01). The results of metabolomics analysis revealed 29 potential biomarkers in serum and 27 potential biomarkers in liver. YFB formula can treat UC by affecting glycerophospholipid metabolism, primary bile acid biosynthesis, glyoxylic acid and dicarboxylic acid metabolism, and arginine and proline metabolism. Compared with the model group, the contents of IL-17A, IL-21, IL-22, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-18 in the YFB groups were decreased in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.01). Compared with those in the model group, the protein levels of NLRP1, NLRP3, NLRC4, ASC, pro-caspase1 and Caspase-1 in the YFB groups were significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic effect of YFB formula on UC rats was dose dependent, and the effect of the YFB (2.046 g/kg) group was close to that of the positive group. YFB formula has an anti-inflammatory effect on UC by regulating the balance of Th17/Treg cells in rats.

RESUMO

This study examined lexical bundles (LBs) used differently by Chinese and American PhD students of linguistics in their dissertation abstracts. Two corpora were built, with each having 700 dissertation abstracts produced by Chinese and American PhD students of linguistics, respectively. The study then used lexical analysis software to retrieve frequently used three-word LBs, from which LBs having different frequencies at a significant level across the two corpora were identified and termed as bundles used differently (BUDs). BUDs were then categorized and analyzed manually in terms of structure, function, and distribution in rhetorical moves. The major findings were: (1) 57.14% of the frequently used LBs were BUDs, of which 90.67% had occurrences in both corpora. The BUDs distributed inequivalently across categories and moves, with the text-oriented category and the move of Result having the most BUDs; and (2) BUDs exhibited two major patterns: the Chinese and American students filled different constituents into structurally and functionally similar constructions, and used LBs of dissimilar functions to fulfill the same communicative purposes. These findings indicate that variations in LB use have a high pedagogic value and confirm the need for using corpora to identify and teach core genre-specific vocabularies to second/foreign language learners.

RESUMO

The present study explored the relations among foreign language (FL) classroom anxiety, enjoyment, expectancy-value motivation, and their predictive effects on Chinese high school students' self-rated FL proficiency. Participants were 280 senior high school Chinese English as a foreign language learners who were surveyed on their foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA), foreign language enjoyment (FLE), and expectancy-value motivation. Results showed that (1) the students generally experienced a medium to a high level of FL classroom emotions with FLE slightly higher than FLCA. They were more value-motivated than expectancy-motivated toward FL learning. Most of them perceived their FL proficiency as unsatisfying; (2) the students' FLE was significantly positively correlated with all dimensions of expectancy-value motivation, while their FLCA and expectancy-value motivation demonstrated a complex correlation pattern. As the students' FLCA level increased, their expectancy beliefs, intrinsic value, attainment value, and utility value decreased, but their cost value increased. By contrast, as their FLE level increased, their expectancy beliefs, intrinsic value, attainment value, utility value all increased, while their cost value first increased and then slightly decreased; and (3) expectancy beliefs, intrinsic value, private enjoyment in FL learning and anxiety arising from fear of negative evaluation jointly significantly predicted the students' self-rated FL proficiency. Implications for future research and teaching were also discussed.
