RESUMO
Cyanides, which are extremely toxic chemicals that are rapidly absorbed into the human body and interact with cytochrome oxidase, strongly inhibit cellular respiration to body death with convulsions. Cyanide ions that exist in many forms in nature such as those found in apricot kernels, cassava roots, and bamboo shoots as cyanogenic glycosides are inevitably used in various industries, including gold and silver mining as well as in dyes and plastic industries. In this study, for the sake of developing ultrahigh-sensitive sensors for cyanide monitoring in a simple manner, we chemically synthesize Aucore-Agshell hybrid nanomaterials of different core/shell thicknesses for colorimetric sensors and fiber optical sensors. Their sensing principle relies on the formation of the Ag/Au cyanocomplex upon cyanide injection. The generated metal cyanocomplex induced changes in refractive indices, causing changes in properties of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), i.e., optical absorbance change for the colorimetric sensors. For fiber optical sensors, the hybrid metal nanoparticles were immobilized on the fiber core surface and the metal cyanocomplex formation induced changes in the fiber cladding refractive index, enabling quantitative cyanide detection with ultrahigh sensitivity. The LSPR-based colorimetric sensor provided the lowest detectable cyanide concentration of 5 × 10-6 M, whereas the value for the fiber-based sensor was 8 × 10-11 M.
RESUMO
Measuring solution concentration plays an important role in chemical, biochemical, clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and biological analyses. In this work, we develop a transmission-mode localized surface plasmon resonance sensor chip system and convenient method which is highly efficient, highly sensitive for detection sensing using multimode fiber. The plasmonically active sensor's surface AuNPs with high-density NPs were decorated onto 1 cm sensing length of various clad-free fiber in the form of homogeneous monolayer utilizing a self-assembly process for immobilization of the target molecule. The carboxyl bond is formed through a functional reaction on the sensor head. Using the significance in the refractive index difference and numerical aperture, which is caused by a variation in the concentration of measuring bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein which can be accurately measured by the output signal. The refractive index variation of the medium analyte layer can be converted to signal output power change at the He-Ne wavelength of 632.8 nm. The sensor detection limit was estimated to be 0.075 ng ml-1for BSA protein which shows high sensitivity compared to other types of label-free optical biosensors. This also leads to a possibility of finding the improvement in the sensitivity label-free biosensors. The conventional method should allow multimode fiber biosensors to become a possible replacement for conventional biosensing techniques based on fluorescence.
RESUMO
Biodegradable periodic mesoporous organosilica (BPMO) has recently emerged as a promising type of mesoporous silica-based nanoparticle for biomedical applications. Like mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN), BPMO possesses a large surface area where various compounds can be attached. In this work, we attached boronophenylalanine (10BPA) to the surface and explored the potential of this nanomaterial for delivering boron-10 for use in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). This cancer therapy is based on the principle that the exposure of boron-10 to thermal neutron results in the release of a-particles that kill cancer cells. To attach 10BPA, the surface of BPMO was modified with diol groups which facilitated the efficient binding of 10BPA, yielding 10BPA-loaded BPMO (10BPA-BPMO). Surface modification with phosphonate was also carried out to increase the dispersibility of the nanoparticles. To investigate this nanomaterial's potential for BNCT, we first used human cancer cells and found that 10BPA-BPMO nanoparticles were efficiently taken up into the cancer cells and were localized in perinuclear regions. We then used a chicken egg tumor model, a versatile and convenient tumor model used to characterize nanomaterials. After observing significant tumor accumulation, 10BPA-BPMO injected chicken eggs were evaluated by irradiating with neutron beams. Dramatic inhibition of the tumor growth was observed. These results suggest the potential of 10BPA-BPMO as a novel boron agent for BNCT.

A series of hydrogen-based TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by the simple entrapment of TiO2 nanoparticles in different hydrogel matrices using gelation processes. The hydrogels, namely, agarose, alginate, and chitosan, were used as matrices for TiO2 immobilization. Morphological differences were characterized for the three different hybrid gel photocatalysts. The rate of methylene blue (MB) photodegradation increased with increasing initial TiO2 dosage in all samples. The structural properties of the hydrogels significantly affected the diffusion of MB and altered the photocatalytic activities. Among these three different hybrid gel photocatalysts, the chitosan-based TiO2 membrane showed superior activity to the agarose- and alginate-based TiO2 hybrid gels. In addition, chitosan/TiO2 still showed excellent photocatalytic activity after being reused in three cycles, suggesting that chitosan/TiO2 is a new potential eco-friendly and a cost-effective photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.
RESUMO
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as an alternative solvent for nanoparticle synthesis. There have been numerous advancements in the fabrication of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), but the potential of DESs in Ag NP synthesis was neither considered nor studied carefully. In this study, we present a novel strategy to fabricate Ag NPs in a DES (Ag NPs-DES). The DES composed of á´ -glucose, urea, and glycerol does not contain any anions to precipitate with Ag+ cations. Our Ag NPs-DES sample is used in a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor. The two analytes for SERS quantitation are nitrofurantoin (NFT) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) whose residues can be traced down to 10-8 M. The highest enhancement factors (EFs) are competitive at 6.29 × 107 and 1.69 × 107 for NFT and SDZ, respectively. Besides, the linearity coefficients are extremely close to 1 in the range of 10-8 to 10-3 M of concentration, and the SERS substrate shows remarkable uniformity along with great selectivity. This powerful SERS performance indicates that DESs have tremendous potential in the synthesis of nanomaterials for biosensor substrate construction.
RESUMO
Cellulose/ZnO (CZ) nanocomposites are promising antimicrobial materials known for their antibiotic-free nature, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness. In this study, cellulose fibers extracted from lotus petioles were utilized as a substrate and decorated with various shapes of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), including small bean, hexagonal ingot-like, long cylindrical, and hexagonal cylinder-shaped NPs. Increasing zinc salt molar concentration resulted in highly crystalline ZnO NPs forming and enhanced interactions between ZnO NPs and -OH groups of cellulose. The thermal stability and UV-visible absorption properties of the CZ samples were influenced by ZnO concentration. Notably, at a ZnO molar ratio of 0.1, the CZ 0.1 sample demonstrated the lowest weight loss, while the optical band gap gradually decreased from 3.0 to 2.45 eV from the CZ 0.01 to CZ 1.0 samples. The CZ nanocomposites exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (E. coli, Gram-negative) bacteria under visible light conditions, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.005 mg/mL for both bacterial strains. The bactericidal effects increased with higher concentrations of ZnO NPs, even achieving 100% inhibition. Incorporating ZnO NPs onto cellulose fibers derived from lotus plants presents a promising avenue for developing environmentally friendly materials with broad applications in antibacterial and environmental fields.
RESUMO
Biodegradable periodic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (B-PMO) are an outstanding nanocarrier due to their biodegradability and high drug load capacities. The present study describes a synthesis of a phenylene-containing tetrasulfide based B-PMO, named P4S. The incorporation of aromatic phenylene groups into the framework creates a strong interaction between nanoparticles (NPs) with aromatic rings in the cordycepin molecules. This results in the low release profile under various conditions. In addition, the replacement of this linker slowed the degradation of nanoparticles. The physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles are evaluated and compared with a biodegradable ethane-containing tetrasulfide based PMO and a non-degradable MCM-41. The biodegradability of P4S is also demonstrated in a reducing environment and the 100 nm spherical nanoparticles completely decomposed within 14 days. The porous structure of P4S has a high loading of hydrophilic cordycepin (approximately 731.52 mg g-1) with a slow releasing speed. The release rates of P4S NPs are significantly lower than other materials, such as liposomes, gelatin nanoparticles, and photo-crosslinked hyaluronic acid methacrylate hydrogels, in the same solution. This specific release behavior could guarantee drug therapeutic effects with minimum side-effects and optimized drug dosages. Most importantly, according to the in vitro cytotoxicity study, cordycepin-loaded P4S NPs could retain the toxicity against liver cancer cell (HepG2) while suppressed the cytotoxicity against normal cells (BAEC).

Biodegradable periodic mesoporous organosilica (BPMO) nanoparticles have emerged as a promising type of nanocarrier for drug delivery, given the biodegradable feature is advantageous for clinical translation. In this paper, we report synthesis and characterization of daunorubicin (DNR) loaded BPMO. DNR was loaded onto rhodamine B-labeled BPMO that contain tetrasulfide bonds. Tumor spheroids and chicken egg tumor models were used to characterize the activity in biological settings. In the first experiment we examined the uptake of BPMO into tumor spheroids prepared from ovarian cancer cells. BPMO were efficiently taken up into tumor spheroids and inhibited their growth. In the chicken egg tumor model, intravenous injection of DNR-loaded BPMO led to the elimination of ovarian tumor. Lack of adverse effect on organs such as lung appears to be due to excellent tumor accumulation of BPMO. Thus, DNR-loaded BPMO represents a promising nanodrug compared with free DNR currently used in cancer therapy. OK.
