RESUMO

A healthy 13-year-old patient with amelogenesis imperfecta was referred by her orthodontist to the joint consultation hour (Center for Specialised Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery). In addition to her amelogenesis imperfecta, she was diagnosed with a class 2 malocclusion and a mandibular hypoplasia. She was treated successfully through a multidisciplinary approach.

RESUMO

Ablative surgery for oral cancer results in loss or alterations of anatomical structures, which may impair oral functions, such as speech, mastication, and swallowing. Oral functions are impaired further by significant side-effects of additional postoperative radiation therapy. Improvement of oral functions may be achieved by implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation. The recommended treatment is a 4-implants retained overdenture. A fixed 2 unit implant-supported partial denture seems a feasible alternative treatment.

RESUMO

In a pilot study, the masticatory function of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis was studied. The chewing efficiency and maximum bite force were measured in five adult patients and compared with a control group consisting of healthy individuals. The chewing efficiency of the patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis was statistically significantly compromised compared to that of the control group. The maximum bite force was not statistically significantly smaller within this small group. The results of this pilot study support the hypothesis that the masticatory function of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis is compromised. We concluded that a more extensive study is necessary to investigate the masticatory function of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and to evaluate the consequences with regard to the quality of life.
