RESUMO

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, combined with first principle and coupled self-consistent Poisson-Schrödinger calculations, we demonstrate that potassium (K) atoms adsorbed on the low-temperature phase of 1T-TiSe_{2} induce the creation of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and quantum confinement of its charge-density wave (CDW) at the surface. By further changing the K coverage, we tune the carrier density within the 2DEG that allows us to nullify, at the surface, the electronic energy gain due to exciton condensation in the CDW phase while preserving a long-range structural order. Our Letter constitutes a prime example of a controlled exciton-related many-body quantum state in reduced dimensionality by alkali-metal dosing.

RESUMO

When viewed as an elementary particle, the electron has spin and charge. When binding to the atomic nucleus, it also acquires an angular momentum quantum number corresponding to the quantized atomic orbital it occupies. Even if electrons in solids form bands and delocalize from the nuclei, in Mott insulators they retain their three fundamental quantum numbers: spin, charge and orbital. The hallmark of one-dimensional physics is a breaking up of the elementary electron into its separate degrees of freedom. The separation of the electron into independent quasi-particles that carry either spin (spinons) or charge (holons) was first observed fifteen years ago. Here we report observation of the separation of the orbital degree of freedom (orbiton) using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering on the one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr2CuO3. We resolve an orbiton separating itself from spinons and propagating through the lattice as a distinct quasi-particle with a substantial dispersion in energy over momentum, of about 0.2 electronvolts, over nearly one Brillouin zone.

RESUMO

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data reveal evidence of a crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) behavior in the prototypical charge density wave (CDW) material NbSe_{3}. In the low-temperature 3D regime, gaps in the electronic structure are observed due to two incommensurate CDWs, in agreement with x-ray diffraction and electronic-structure calculations. At higher temperatures we observe a spectral weight depletion that approaches the power-law behavior expected in one dimension. From the warping of the quasi-1D Fermi surface at low temperatures, we extract the energy scale of the dimensional crossover. This is corroborated by a detailed analysis of the density of states, which reveals a change in dimensional behavior dependent on binding energy. Our results offer an important insight into the dimensionality of excitations in quasi-1D materials.

RESUMO

We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of the quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K_{2}Cr_{3}As_{3}. We find that the Fermi surface contains two Fermi surface sheets, with linearly dispersing bands not displaying any significant band renormalizations. The one-dimensional band dispersions display a suppression of spectral intensity approaching the Fermi level according to a linear power law, over an energy range of ∼200 meV. This is interpreted as a signature of Tomonoga-Luttinger liquid physics, which provides a new perspective on the possibly unconventional superconductivity in this family of compounds.

RESUMO

The energy and momentum selectivity of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is exploited to address the ultrafast dynamics of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave (SDW) transition photoexcited in epitaxial thin films of chromium. We are able to quantitatively extract the evolution of the SDW order parameter Δ through the ultrafast phase transition and show that Δ is governed by the transient temperature of the thermalized electron gas, in a mean field description. The complete destruction of SDW order on a sub-100 fs time scale is observed, much faster than for conventional charge density wave materials. Our results reveal that equilibrium concepts for phase transitions such as the order parameter may be utilized even in the strongly nonadiabatic regime of ultrafast photoexcitation.

RESUMO

We report the spin-selective optical excitation of carriers in inversion-symmetric bulk samples of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) WSe_{2}. Employing time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trARPES) and complementary time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), we observe spin-, valley-, and layer-polarized excited state populations upon excitation with circularly polarized pump pulses, followed by ultrafast (<100 fs) scattering of carriers towards the global minimum of the conduction band. TDDFT reveals the character of the conduction band, into which electrons are initially excited, to be two-dimensional and localized within individual layers, whereas at the minimum of the conduction band, states have a three-dimensional character, facilitating interlayer charge transfer. These results establish the optical control of coupled spin-, valley-, and layer-polarized states in centrosymmetric materials with locally broken symmetries and suggest the suitability of TMDC multilayer and heterostructure materials for valleytronic and spintronic device concepts.

RESUMO

Several experiments have been performed on 1T-TiSe_{2} in order to identify whether the electronic structure is semimetallic or semiconducting without reaching a consensus. In this Letter, we theoretically study the impact of electron-hole and electron-phonon correlations on the bare semimetallic and semiconducting electronic structure. The resulting electron spectral functions provide a direct comparison of both cases and demonstrate that 1T-TiSe_{2} is of predominant semiconducting character with some spectral weight crossing the Fermi level.

RESUMO

Cuprates and other high-temperature superconductors consist of two-dimensional layers that are crucial to their properties. The dynamics of the quantum spins in these layers lie at the heart of the mystery of the cuprates. In bulk cuprates such as La(2)CuO(4), the presence of a weak coupling between the two-dimensional layers stabilizes a three-dimensional magnetic order up to high temperatures. In a truly two-dimensional system however, thermal spin fluctuations melt long-range order at any finite temperature. Here, we measure the spin response of isolated layers of La(2)CuO(4) that are only one-unit-cell-thick. We show that coherent magnetic excitations, magnons, known from the bulk order, persist even in a single layer of La(2)CuO(4), with no evidence for more complex correlations such as resonating valence bond correlations. These magnons are, therefore, well described by spin-wave theory (SWT). On the other hand, we also observe a high-energy magnetic continuum in the isotropic magnetic response that is not well described by two-magnon SWT, or indeed any existing theories.

RESUMO

We investigate the high-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the high-T(c) cuprate superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ) (Bi-2212) using Cu L(3) edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. Broad, dispersive magnetic excitations are observed, with a zone boundary energy of ∼ 300 meV and a weak dependence on doping. These excitations are strikingly similar to the bosons proposed to explain the high-energy "kink" observed in photoemission. A phenomenological calculation of the spin response, based on a parametrization of the the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy derived electronic structure and Yang-Rice-Zhang quasiparticles, provides a reasonable prediction of the energy dispersion of the observed magnetic excitations. These results indicate a possible unified framework to reconcile the magnetic and electronic properties of the cuprates and we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such an approach.

RESUMO

In 2012 several articles reported interesting findings for the ambulatory practice in internal general medicine. A negative rapid test for influenza does not rule out that diagnosis. A test assessing the walking speed in the elderly can help determining who would benefit from antihypertensive therapy. Antibiotic treatment has no benefit for acute uncomplicated rhinosinusitis and diverticulitis. Probiotics can reduce the risk of post-antibiotic diarrhea. Daily coffee intake could reduce mortality. Oral supplementation of calcium can be harmful to the cardiovascular system. Subclinical hyperthyroidism should be treated to prevent cardiovascular complications. Aspirin can prevent recurrences in case of a primary thromboembolic event. Local injection of corticosteroids under ultrasonographic guidance for plantar fasciitis can be a safe treatment. Ibuprofen can prevent acute mountain sickness.

RESUMO

In high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ti L edge of the charge-density-wave system 1T-TiSe(2), we observe sharp low energy loss peaks from electron-hole pair excitations developing at low temperature. These excitations are strongly dispersing as a function of the transferred momentum of light. We show that the unoccupied bands close to the Fermi level can effectively be probed in this broadband material. Furthermore, we extract the order parameter of the charge-density-wave phase from temperature-dependent measurements.

RESUMO

We address the lattice deformation of 1T-TiSe2 within the exciton condensate phase. We show that, at low temperature, condensed excitons influence the lattice through electron-phonon interaction. It is found that at zero temperature, in the exciton condensate phase of 1T-TiSe2, this exciton condensate exerts a force on the lattice generating ionic displacements comparable in amplitude to what is measured in experiment. This is thus the first quantitative estimation of the amplitude of the periodic lattice distortion observed in 1T-TiSe2 as a consequence of the exciton condensate phase.

RESUMO

We combine high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering with cluster calculations utilizing a recently derived effective magnetic scattering operator to analyze the polarization, excitation energy, and momentum-dependent excitation spectrum of the low-dimensional quantum magnet TiOCl in the range expected for orbital and magnetic excitations (0-2.5 eV). Ti 3d orbital excitations yield complete information on the temperature-dependent crystal-field splitting. In the spin-Peierls phase we observe a dispersive two-spinon excitation and estimate the inter- and intradimer magnetic exchange coupling from a comparison to cluster calculations.

RESUMO

Doctors must regularly adjust their patients' care according to recent relevant publications. The chief residents from the Department of Internal Medicine of a university hospital present some major themes of internal medicine treated during the year 2008, such as heart failure, diabetes, COPD, and thromboembolic disease. Emphasis will be placed primarily on changes in the daily hospital practice induced by these recent studies. This variety of topics illustrates both the broad spectrum of the current internal medicine, and the many uncertainties associated with modem medical practice based on evidence.

RESUMO

Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) employing a 500 kHz extreme-ultraviolet light source operating at 21.7 eV probe photon energy is reported. Based on a high-power ytterbium laser, optical parametric chirped pulse amplification, and ultraviolet-driven high-harmonic generation, the light source produces an isolated high-harmonic with 110 meV bandwidth and a flux of more than 1011 photons/s on the sample. Combined with a state-of-the-art ARPES chamber, this table-top experiment allows high-repetition rate pump-probe experiments of electron dynamics in occupied and normally unoccupied (excited) states in the entire Brillouin zone and with a temporal system response function below 40 fs.

RESUMO

In 26 hospitalized patients with depression, a combined pharmacogenetic test with dextromethorphan, a substrate of cytochrome P450IID6, and mephenytoin, the S-form of which is hydroxylated by a P450IIC isozyme, was carried out before amitriptyline therapy. Metabolites were determined in 24-hour urine samples collected on treatment day 8, and the contributions of individual compounds, including the four isomers of 10-hydroxyamitriptyline and 10-hydroxynortriptyline to total excretion were calculated. Formation of (-)-E-10-hydroxyamitriptyline and (-)-E-10-hydroxynortriptyline apparently depends on the activity of cytochrome P450IID6 because negative correlations existed between the log metabolic ratio of dextromethorphan and the relative quantities of these enantiomers. In contrast, correlations were positive for nortriptyline, (+)-E-10-hydroxynortriptyline, (-)-Z-10-hydroxynortriptyline, and (+)-Z-10-hydroxynortriptyline. The mephenytoin hydroxylase seems to participate in side-chain demethylation to the secondary and primary amines, because the log metabolic ratio of mephenytoin correlated negatively with the relative quantity of E-10-hydroxydidesmethylamitriptyline and positively with that of amitriptyline and its N-glucuronide.

RESUMO

The author studied the variation of the use of the diagnostic item "without apparent psychic symptoms" by the physicians of the University Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic in Lausanne between 1957 and 1979. The results showed a rise and then a fall of the use of this diagnostic item; the variation is related more to institutional habits and opportunity than to the concept of "normality". The rise can be explained by diverse circumstances amplifying the opportunity to use this item, while the fall is in relation to a change in habits of formulation and codification. It is fortunate that consulting psychiatrists leave a place for the appreciation of apparent normality. The explicit or implicit formulation of this appreciation as well as the frequency of its use is of little importance, as they are function of arbitrarily defined habits or opportunities.

RESUMO

We present a new high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission study of 1T-TiSe2 in both its room-temperature, normal phase and its low-temperature, charge-density wave phase. At low temperature the photoemission spectra are strongly modified, with large band renormalizations at high-symmetry points of the Brillouin zone and a very large transfer of spectral weight to backfolded bands. A calculation of the theoretical spectral function for an excitonic insulator phase reproduces the experimental features with very good agreement. This gives strong evidence in favor of the excitonic insulator scenario as a driving force for the charge-density wave transition in 1T-TiSe2.

RESUMO

This article is based on the study of 52 cases of Turner's syndrome, born between 1980 and 1996 and recorded in the Registry of Congenital Anomalies in the Canton of Vaud. In most cases the cytogenetic analysis was based on maternal multiple-marker screening, sonography findings or maternal age. The most common chromosome abnormality is complete monosomy X. The rare cases of mosaic and the one case of isochromosome mainly involve livebirths. Morphological analysis of foetuses revealed hygroma colli (84%) and hydrops (63%), frequently associated with major cardiac malformations. The livebirths present growth retardation, pterygium colli and facial dysmorphic features, but rarely complex malformations. In the light of our data, the probability of survival to birth is 0.8% and the prevalence in all clinical pregnancies is 1.1%.

RESUMO

An HPLC method is presented which allows the measurement in the same run of the enantiomers of mianserin, desmethylmianserin, and 8-hydroxymianserin in plasma and urine of mianserin-treated patients. Limits of quantitation for the (S)- and (R)-enantiomers of mianserin and desmethylmianserin were 4 and 2.5 ng/ml, respectively, in plasma, and for the (S)- and (R)-enantiomers of mianserin, desmethylmianserin, and 8-hydroxymianserin 5, 2.5, and 5 ng/ml, respectively, in urine. The measured ratios of (S)-mianserin/(R)-mianserin and (S)-desmethylmianserin/(R)-desmethylmianserin in the plasmas of 10 mianserin-treated patients, all extensive metabolizers of debrisoquine as determined by CYP2D6 genotyping, varied, respectively, from 1.0 to 4.06 and from 0.19 to 0.64. As the enantiomers of mianserin differ in their pharmacological profile, these results could partially explain why, until now, no consistent relationship has been established between the therapeutic response and total [(S) + (R)] plasma levels of this antidepressant.
