RESUMO

Texas discontinued state-sponsored business restrictions and mask mandates on March 10, 2021, and mandated that no government officials, including public school officials, may implement mask requirements even in areas where COVID-19 hospitalizations comprised more than 15% of hospitalizations. Nonetheless, some public school districts began the 2021-2022 school year with mask mandates in place. We used quasi-experimental methods to analyze the impact of school mask mandates, which appear to have resulted in approximately 40 fewer student cases per week in the first eight weeks of school. RESUMO

Exploring the interactions between gold nanoparticles and dye molecules is essentially significant, particularly for sensing, imaging and lasing applications. In this study, the gold nanoparticles were found to be strongly interacting with the eosin B dye molecules resulted in considerable changes in the thermal diffusivity of the dye and quenching of fluorescence. The laser ablation method was used to synthesize surfactant free spherical gold nanoparticles. The formation and optical properties of gold nanoparticles and eosin B dye solutions were analyzed using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. Size and structural inspections were carried using TEM images. Dual beam thermal lens spectroscopy was employed to investigate the thermal diffusivities of the dye-nanoparticle system. The thermal diffusivities of the samples were found to decrease with increase in concentration of gold nanoparticles. We have also observed an enhancement in the thermal lens signal of the eosin B dye with an increase in the concentration of gold nanoparticles in the system.

RESUMO

A theoretical study of the regioselectivity of the Diels-Alder reaction between 1,8-dichloroanthracene and acrolein is performed using DFT at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The FMO analysis, global and local reactivity indices confirmed the reported experimental results. Potential energy surface analysis showed that the cycloadditions (CAs) favor the formation of the anti product. These results are in good agreement with the reported results obtained experimentally where the anti is the major product.

RESUMO

The synthesis of the tetracyclic compounds 1-(4,5-dichloro-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracen-11-yl)-N-methylmethanamine (5) and 1-(1,8-dichloro-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracen-11-yl)-N-methylmethanamine (6) as a homologue of the anxiolytic and antidepressant drugs benzoctamine and maprotiline were described. The key intermediate aldehydes (3) and (4) were successfully synthesized via a [4 + 2] cycloaddition between acrolein and 1,8-dichloroanthracene. The synthesized compounds were investigated for antidepressant activity using the forced swimming test. Compounds (5), (6) and (3) showed significant reduction in the mice immobility indicating significant antidepressant effects. These compounds significantly reduced the immobility times at a dose 80 mg/kg by 84.0%, 86.7% and 71.1% respectively.

RESUMO

In the present work dual beam thermal lens technique is used for studying the solvent dependency on the quantum efficiency of a novel dye used for biomedical applications. The role of solvent in the absolute fluorescence quantum yield of 4-[(4-Aminophenyl)-(4-imino-1-cyclohexa-2, 5- dienylidene) methyl] aniline hydrochloride is studied using thermal lens technique. It is observed that the variation in solvents and its concentration results considerable variations in the fluorescence quantum yield. These variations are due to the non-radiative relaxation of the absorbed energy and because of the different solvent properties. The highest quantum yield of the dye is observed in the polar protic solvent-water.

RESUMO

A series of hitherto unreported anthracene-embedded dispirooxindoles has been synthesized via a one-pot three-component 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of an azomethine ylide, generated in situ from the reaction of isatin and sarcosine to 10-benzylideneanthracen-9(10H)-one as a dipolarophile in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide([bmim]Br), an ionic liquid. This reaction proceeded regio- and diastereoselectively, in good to excellent yields.

RESUMO

The dual beam thermal lens technique is an effective method for the measurement of fluorescence quantum yield of dye solutions. The concentration-dependent quantum yield of a novel dye of triaminotriphenylmethane family in ethanol is studied using this technique. The absolute fluorescence quantum yield is measured and is observed that the reduction in the quantum yield is due to the non-radiative relaxation of the absorbed energy.

RESUMO

Objectives: Workplace safety is essential to occupational health practices among healthcare providers, especially for nurses vulnerable to work-related hazards such as needle stick and sharp injuries. In Yemen, the underestimation and absence of reporting system and lack of health supplies in a collapsed health system exacerbated the needle stick and sharp injuries. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and associated factors of needle stick and sharp injuries among nurses in Taiz, Yemen. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 151 nurses working in three public hospitals in Taiz City. A semi-structured questionnaire was designed and delivered to the participants. Results: The prevalence of needle stick and sharp injuries among nurses was very high (95.36%), and around half were injured more than five times. Female nurses and those in an emergency department were more likely to be subjected to needle stick and sharp injuries (p = 0.018 and 0.021, respectively). Needle stick was the most common cause of injury (62.77%), and the fingers were the most exposed injury site (79.17%). Non-reporting injuries were very high (73.61%), and only one-third (34.21%) of them proceeded in the process of management, and less than one-quarter (23.68%) had been vaccinated. Conclusion: The prevalence of needle stick and sharp injuries among nurses in Taiz was very high, and determined by gender and place of work. Post-injury reporting and precautions were poor, which may increase the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections among clients and healthcare providers.

RESUMO

Objective This study aimed to explore mental and behavioral health support trends for children aged 3-17, analyzing treatment and counseling using United States data from the 2016-2020 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) database. Methods Employing a retrospective observational design, we systematically retrieved and analyzed NSCH Database data from 2016 to 2020. The focus was on understanding mental and behavioral health treatment percentages over time, specifically targeting demographic variations such as age groups, gender, race/ethnicity, and the federal poverty level percentage. Graphical representation utilized Excel, summarizing results based on aggregated data for distinct time intervals, highlighting the importance of mental and behavioral health support for children aged 3-17. Results The study identified significant temporal trends in mental and behavioral health treatment, revealing notable fluctuations across demographic and socio-economic variables. Of the 22,812 participants, 51.7% (CI: 50.2-53.1%, n=12,686) received treatment, exposing disparities. Gender differences were evident, with higher treatment rates in females (53.7%, CI: 51.6-55.9%, n=6,166) than males (50.1%, CI: 48.2-52.0%, n=6,520). Age-specific patterns indicated lower intervention rates in younger children (33.5%, CI: 28.6-38.8%, n=447, ages 3-5) compared to adolescents (58.1%, CI: 56.2-59.9%, n=8, 222 ages 12-17). Conclusion The conclusion highlights significant temporal fluctuations and pronounced demographic disparities. Findings underscore varying prevalence rates among age groups, genders, racial/ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic status categories. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and researchers, informing targeted interventions to enhance mental and behavioral health support for United States children.

RESUMO

This study applied ocean models data from Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) in assessing the impacts of the trends in key ocean parameters on the primary production of the Gulf of Guinea (GoG). Trend analyses, from 1993 to 2020, were done using linear regression and Mann-Kendall significance test methods to ascertain inter-annual and inter-seasonal variations and check the significance of the trends, respectively. Results affirm that temperature, salinity, nutrients, and oxygen play significant roles in the primary production of the GoG. Also, parameters such as temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-A, net primary production, phosphate, and dissolved oxygen have been experiencing increases between the study duration while silicate and nitrate have been declining in the GoG. However, there are regions and years with contrary values to the average trends. The varying level of significance of the trend showed that the impacts of the climate on the primary production of the GoG vary basin-wide.

RESUMO

Objective. This study aims to highlight the low birth weight (LBW) in Taiz City (Yemen), as LBW is one of the public health challenges experiencing a profound effect on newborns. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study since the interview and medical records were the sources of data to be analyzed by SPSS. Results. The findings of this study include; a high prevalence of LBW (39.11%), the maternal age was not associated with LBW (P = .68), and education level, economic status, residence place, and health status were not associated with LBW (P < .05). Although the pre-pregnancy BMI, during-pregnancy BMI, MUAC, and gestational age were significantly associated with LBW (P < .05), the only risk factor was gestational age (OR = 9.606, CI = 3.988-23.135, P = .00). Conclusion. LBW is highly prevalent in Taiz (Yemen), so providing good healthcare services is essential to manage LBW incidence.

RESUMO

Background School-based bullying is a global problem that negatively impacts the victims' and perpetrators' health and well-being. There is a paucity of data regarding bullying in schools and its association with suicide behaviors among adolescents in Liberia. Objective The study investigated the impact of bullying victimization on suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among adolescents in Liberia. It aimed to provide insights into the consequences of bullying victimization on adolescents' mental health regarding their thoughts of self-harm and suicide attempts. Methods The study utilized data from the 2017 Liberia Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS) to analyze information on 2744 students between the ages of 11 and 18 years, with 52.4% being males. Prevalence rates of bullying victimization and suicide behaviors were calculated using descriptive statistics. Multiple logistic regressions were used to model the relationship between being bullied and experiencing suicidal behaviors (ideation and attempts). Results Among the 2744 adolescents examined, 20% experienced suicidal thoughts, with about 30% of the adolescents reporting suicide attempts at some point in the year preceding the survey. Within 30 days prior to the survey, the prevalence of bullying victimization was 50%, with 44.9% experiencing frequent victimization (3 or more days). Bullying victimization was significantly linked to increased odds of suicidal ideation with planning (aOR: 1.86; P < 0.001), at least a suicide attempt (aOR: 2.16; P < 0.001), and multiple attempts at suicide (aOR: 2.67; P < 0.001). We also observed that a greater number of days bullied was dose-dependently associated with higher odds for suicide ideation and attempts. Conclusion These findings support and extend those from other developing countries, highlighting the association between school-based bullying and suicidal behaviors. The relatively high prevalence of bullying among adolescents in Liberia underscores the importance of implementing effective anti-bullying policies and suicide prevention strategies in schools.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With the global continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the large-scale administration of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is crucial to achieve herd immunity and curtail further spread of the virus, but success is contingent on public understanding and vaccine uptake. We aim to understand public perception about vaccines for COVID-19 through the wide-scale, organic discussion on Twitter. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study included Twitter posts matching the search criteria (('covid*' OR 'coronavirus') AND 'vaccine') posted during vaccine development from February 1st through December 11th, 2020. These COVID-19 vaccine related posts were analyzed with topic modeling, sentiment and emotion analysis, and demographic inference of users to provide insight into the evolution of public attitudes throughout the study period. FINDINGS: We evaluated 2,287,344 English tweets from 948,666 user accounts. Individuals represented 87.9 % (n = 834,224) of user accounts. Of individuals, men (n = 560,824) outnumbered women (n = 273,400) by 2:1 and 39.5 % (n = 329,776) of individuals were ≥40 years old. Daily mean sentiment fluctuated congruent with news events, but overall trended positively. Trust, anticipation, and fear were the three most predominant emotions; while fear was the most predominant emotion early in the study period, trust outpaced fear from April 2020 onward. Fear was more prevalent in tweets by individuals (26.3 % vs. organizations 19.4 %; p < 0.001), specifically among women (28.4 % vs. males 25.4 %; p < 0.001). Multiple topics had a monthly trend towards more positive sentiment. Tweets comparing COVID-19 to the influenza vaccine had strongly negative early sentiment but improved over time. INTERPRETATION: This study successfully explores sentiment, emotion, topics, and user demographics to elucidate important trends in public perception about COVID-19 vaccines. While public perception trended positively over the study period, some trends, especially within certain topic and demographic clusters, are concerning for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. These insights can provide targets for educational interventions and opportunity for continued real-time monitoring.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Electronic phenotyping is a method of using electronic-health-record (EHR) data to automate identifying a patient/population with a characteristic of interest. This study determines validity of using EHR data of children with overweight/obesity to electronically phenotype evidence of clinician 'attention' to high body mass index (BMI) and each of four distinct comorbidities. METHODS: We built five electronic phenotypes classifying 2-18-year-old children with overweight/obesity (n = 17,397) by electronic/health-record evidence of distinct attention to high body mass index, hypertension, lipid disorders, fatty liver, and prediabetes/diabetes. We reviewed, selected and cross-checked random charts to define items clinicians select in EHRs to build problem lists, and to order medications, laboratory tests and referrals to electronically classify attention to overweight/obesity and each comorbidity. Operating characteristics of each clinician-attention phenotype were determined by comparing comprehensive chart review by reviewers masked to electronic classification who adjudicated evidence of clinician attention to high BMI and each comorbidity. RESULTS: In a random sample of 817 visit-records reviewed/coded, specificity of each electronic phenotype is 99%-100% (with PPVs ranging from 96.8% for prediabetes/diabetes to 100% for dyslipidemia and hypertension). Sensitivities of the attention classifications range from 69% for hypertension (NPV, 98.9%) to 84.7% for high-BMI attention (NPV, 92.3%). CONCLUSIONS: Electronic phenotypes for clinician attention to overweight/obesity and distinct comorbidities are highly specific, with moderate (BMI) to modest (each comorbidity) sensitivity. The high specificity supports using phenotypes to identify children with prior high-BMI/comorbidity attention.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Lack of clinical trial awareness is a crucial barrier to clinical trial enrollment. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and factors associated with clinical trial awareness among US adults with self-reported depression and anxiety. METHODS: Data were collected from 896 adults who self-reported depression and anxiety from the 2020 Health Information National Trends Survey. Multinomial logistic regression was utilized to assess predictors of clinical trial awareness, particularly socio-demographic, health-related, and technological variables. Odds ratios (OR) for the associations were reported. RESULTS: About 60.4% of adults with self-reported depression or anxiety reported being aware of clinical trials. In the multivariable regression, education level, health-related social media use, and having access to a regular provider were all significantly associated with greater odds of clinical trial awareness among individuals with depression and/or anxiety. Specifically, individuals with at least some college education (OR 2.07, 95% confidence interval (CI); 1.28-3.34; p = 0.004) were more likely to report awareness of clinical trials than those with less than a college education. Similarly, compared to those without access to health providers, individuals with depression and/or anxiety who had a regular provider had greater odds of clinical trial awareness (OR 2.23, 95% CI; 1.16-4.31; p = 0.017). Additionally, those who reported two or more health-related uses of social media were significantly more likely to report clinical trial awareness than their counterparts who reported no health-related social media use (OR 3.17, 95% CI; 1.48-6.80; p = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Our study shows that about six in 10 adults with depression and anxiety in the United States were aware of clinical trials. However, some sub-groups of patients, particularly those without access to a regular health provider, those with a lower education level, and those with limited use of social media for health purposes, remain inadequately informed and may lack awareness of available clinical trials. These findings are crucial and identify subgroups of people with mental disorders that may benefit from targeted interventions to improve clinical trial awareness.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that has a significant impact on the lives of children and adolescents. This study conducts a comprehensive 20-year analysis of data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to investigate the prevalence of ADHD among American youth, as well as its demographic patterns and socioeconomic determinants. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of NCHS data spanning from 1997 to 2018 was carried out. The dataset included information on ADHD diagnoses, demographic characteristics (such as age, gender, and race/ethnicity), socioeconomic indicators (including poverty level and health insurance status), and temporal variables. A range of statistical analyses were performed, encompassing temporal trend analysis, demographic assessments, and socioeconomic examinations. RESULTS: It was consistently observed that boys had a higher prevalence of ADHD (12.93% compared to 5.61%), aligning with established trends. Among adolescents aged 10-17, the prevalence was the highest at 11.09%, while for the 5-9 age group, it stood at 6.57%. In terms of racial and ethnic groups, individuals identifying as two or more races exhibited the highest prevalence at 12.36%, followed by white (9.83%), black or African American (10.09%), Hispanic or Latino (5.36%), and non-Hispanic or Latino (10.64%). Socioeconomic disparities were evident, with a prevalence of 11.41% among those living below the poverty line, compared to 10.6% (100%-199% of the poverty line), 8.6% (200%-399%), and 8.39% (400% or more). Medicaid beneficiaries had the highest prevalence at 12.57%, followed by those with private insurance (9.65%), insured (8.11%), and uninsured (5.83%). CONCLUSION: These findings underscore the intricate relationship between ADHD prevalence and demographic and socioeconomic factors. It is imperative to address these disparities to ensure equitable assessment and intervention for ADHD, taking into account cultural influences, determinants of health tied to socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare for all children. This analysis by the NCHS provides essential insights into ADHD among American youth, emphasizing the necessity for tailored interventions, equitable healthcare access, and further research to comprehensively address this complex neurodevelopmental disorder.

RESUMO

Objective The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between wearable device (WD) use and physical activity (PA) levels among US adults with self-reported depression and anxiety. Methods Data were pooled from 2026 adults who self-reported depression and anxiety from the 2019 and 2020 Health Information National Trends Survey. The explanatory variable was WD use, and the outcomes were weekly PA levels and resistance strength training. Logistic regression was conducted to investigate the association between WD and PA parameters. Results About 33% of adults with self-reported depression/anxiety reported WD use. Only 32.5% and 34.2% of the population reported meeting the weekly recommended levels of physical activity (≥150 minutes/week) and strength and resistance exercise (≥2 times weekly), respectively. In adjusted analyses, the use of WD was not associated with meeting the national weekly recommendation for physical activity (OR 1.38, 95% CI (0.94, 2.04); p=0.10) or resistance strength training (OR 1.31, 95% CI (0.82, 2.08); p=0.26). Further exploratory analysis also showed that physical activity levels did not differ with the frequency of WD use. Conclusion Despite the popularity of WD use among people with mental disorders, we found that use of WD was not associated with increased physical activity measures, suggesting that although there is a promise for these tools to augment mental health, their real-world effectiveness in promoting physical activity in people with mental disorders remains to be proven.

RESUMO

Background There is a scarcity of studies delineating the trends of cardiovascular interventions in the hospitalized population stratified by body mass index (BMI). Our study aimed to study the burden of cardiovascular interventions and outcomes by BMI. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database between January 2016 and December 2020. We identified the population of interest using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code. We studied the BMI in five categories: "healthy weight" (HW; BMI < 19.9-24.9 kg/m2), "overweight" (OV; BMI = 25-29.9 kg/m2), "obesity class one" (OB1; BMI = 30-34.9 kg/m2), "obesity class two" (OB2; BMI = 35-39.9 kg/m2), and "obesity class three" (OB3; BMI > 40 kg/m2). Results There were 5,654,905 hospitalizations with an ICD-10 code related to BMI within this study period. The HW group had 1,103,659 (19.5%) hospitalizations, the OV group had 462,464 (8.2%), the OB1 group had 1,095,325 (19.4%), the OB2 group had 1,036,682 (18.3%), and the OB3 group had 1,956,775 (34.6%) hospitalizations. The mean age of the population with obesity was as follows: OB1 = 61 years (SD = 16); OB2 = 58 years (SD = 15.9); and OB3 = 55 years (SD = 15.5). The mean ages of the HW and OV groups were 68 years (SD = 16.6) and 65 years (SD = 16.1), respectively. In the HW group, there were 948 (8.1%) hospital admissions for aortic valve replacement (AVR), 54 (11%) for aortic valve repair (AVRr), 737 (15.9%) for mitral valve replacement (MVRr), 12 (17.1%) for mitral valve repair (MVR), 79 (2.2%) for left atrial appendage (LAA) closure, and 3390 (5.2%) for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The OV group had 1049 (8.9%) hospital admissions for AVRs, 42 (9%) for AVRr, 461 (10%) for MVRr, four (5.7%) for MVR, 307 (8.6%) for LAA closure, and 5703 (8.8%) for PCIs. The OB1 group had 3326 (28.4%) hospital admissions for AVR, 125 (26.9%) for AVRr, 1229 (26.7%) for MVRr, 23 (32.9%) for MVR, 1173 (32.9%) for LAA, and 20,255 (31.3%) for PCI, while the OB2 group had 2725 (23.3%) hospital admissions for AVR, 105 (22.6%) for AVRr, 898 (19.4%) for MVRr, 11 (15.7%) for MVR, 933 (26.2%) for LAA, and 16,773 (25.9%) for PCI. Lastly, the OB3 group had 3626 (31%) hospital admissions for AVR, 139 (29.9%) for AVRr, 1285 (27.8%) for MVRr, 20 (28.6%) for MVR, 1063 (29.9%) for LAA, and 18,589 (28.7%) for PCI. Conclusion Our study supports the evidence of increased cardiovascular interventions with increasing BMI. Albeit, an inconsistent presentation across the spectrum of cardiovascular diseases and outcomes, for example, equal or better outcomes in obese cohorts compared to the healthy weight population undergoing PCI. However, the increasing cardiovascular intervention burden in the youngest studied population suggests a rise in the cardiovascular disease burden among the young and partially explains their better outcomes. Steps to include weight management for these patients are paramount.
