[Diffuse poliencephalitis and visceral neoplasm (author's transl)]. / Polioencéphalite diffuse et néoplasme viscéral.

A case of diffuse polioencephalitis associated with non-differentiated bronchial carcinoma is reported. Clinically the patient presented mental distrubance and an extra-pyramidal syndrome. Anatomopathological investigation revealed inflammation of the cerebral hemispheres and the brain stem. Similar involvement of others regions of the central nervous system has been reported in the literature, probably indicating various locations of a single nosological entity. A viral origin is probable but not yet established.

[Minimal encephalitis in patients with renal transplant. Clinicopathological study and discussion of the role of the cytomegalovirus (author's transl)]. / Encéphalite à minima chez les transplantés rénaux. Etude anatomoclinique et discussion du rôle du virus cytomégalique.

An autopsy was performed in ten patients recipients of renal allograft who died from cytomegalovirus pulmonary infection. In six patients, encephalitis lesions disseminated in the whole brain were observed. These lesions were not symptomatic. The particular features of this entity and its relationships with the type of immunosuppression therapy are discussed.

[Bone histology and 25-OH vitamin D plasma levels in alcoholics without cirrhosis (author's transl)]. / Etude histologique de la minéralisation osseuse et taux de 25-hydroxycholecalciférol dans l'éthylisme chronique.

Bone mineralization is impaired in alcoholic non cirrhotics admitted to hospital for withdrawal. The defect is more marked in women than in men. Low 25-OH vitamin D plasma values may be observed in these patients and seem to be related to malnutrition. The degree of bone demineralization is not statistically correlated to 25-OH vitamin D plasma level.

[Paralytic ileus secondary to podophyllin poisoning]. / Ileus paralytique secondaire à une intoxication à la podophylline.

The authors report a case of general and local poisoning after erroneous intravaginal administration of podophyllin for warts. The clinical course mainly showed a 10 day paralytic ileus, vaginal and urethral lesions and a severe peripheral neurological illness: paresthesia, dysesthesia and ataxia. The authors stress the potential toxicity of podophyllin and recommend great caution in using this product.

Osteogenesis imperfecta associated with multiple myeloma.

In a case of osteogenesis imperfecta with multiple fractures already from childhood, myelomatosis was diagnosed at the age of 52 years because of a serum M-component (IgG, lambda), Bence Jones proteinuria, myeloma cells in the bone marrow, and osteolytic skeletal lesions. She died 10 months later. A partial postmortem examination of a larger bone lesion confirmed the diagnosis.

[Etiology and therapy of Ludwig's angina]. / Etiologie et thérapeutique de l'angine de Ludwig.

After two case reports of Ludwig's angina, the pathogenesis, the bacteriology and the treatment of this syndrome is reviewed. The initial antimicrobial therapy should be broad enough to inhibit the gram-negative and anaerobic organisms. The antibiotherapy should be completed by the incision and the drainage of the submandibular region. The sudden airway obstruction will be prevented by a tracheotomy under local anesthesia.
