Adolescence may be defined as the period from 10 to 19 years of age. Adolescence is a significant period of human growth and maturation when various changes occur and requirement of nutrients is increased in girls due to increase demands for growth. This prospective type of analytical cross-sectional study was carried out to observe the status of Hb concentration and serum total iron binding capacity (TIBC) levels among iron deficiency anemic adolescent girl. This study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh from July 2019 to December 2020. For this purpose, 140 adolescent girl's age ranged from 10-19 years were selected in this study, among them, 70 healthy adolescent girls as control group (Group I) and 70 girls selected as study group (Group II) and they are iron deficiency anemic adolescent girls. Estimation of hemoglobin by cyanmethaemoglobin method and estimation of serum total iron binding capacity (TIBC) was determined by Ferrozine method using Globals iron and TIBC kit, UK. All data were expressed as mean ±SD and statistical significance of difference among the Group I and Group II were calculated by unpaired students''t' test. Hemoglobin (Hb) concentration significantly lowers in study group (Group II) in comparison with control group (Group I), Result is highly significant (p<0.001). Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) significantly higher in study group (Group II) in comparison with control group (Group I), Result is highly significant p<0.001). Immediate, long term and sustainable public health intervention would require for overcome the situation.

Most of the thalassemic children of Bangladesh are receiving repeated blood transfusion. But they do not receive chelation therapy due to financial constraints. As a result, iron overload occurs in various organs of these children. Extra iron that is loaded in thyroid gland causes thyroid dysfunction. This study was undertaken to evaluate thyroid status in children with transfusion dependent Thalassemia patient. This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in the Department of Pediatrics, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh from September 2016 to April 2018. Children having thalassemia diagnosed by Hb electrophoresis, aged 3-12 years of both sexes were included as study group. Children of same age and sex admitted in indoor of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital with minor illness and without thalassemia were taken as comparison group. Purposive Sampling technique was applied. Serum FT4, TSH and ferritin level were estimated in all children. Data analysis was done with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21.0. A total of 60 patients were enrolled as study group and another 60 patients were compared as comparison group. Mean ages of study group was 7.88±2.55 years and comparison group were 7.22±2.48 years. The mean pre-transfusion hemoglobin, serum ferritin, serum FT4 and serum TSH level were found 6.23±0.60 gm/dl, 2658.33±879.39 ng/ml, 15.14±4.40 fmol/mL, 4.29±4.60 µIU/mL respectively in study group. The mean serum FT4 was found significantly lower and mean serum TSH was significantly higher in thalassemic children in comparison to non-thalassemic children (p= <0.05). Frequency of subclinical hypothyroidism was found significantly higher in study group (25.0%) compared to comparison group (3.3%) (p=0.001). Mean serum ferritin level was found significantly higher in hypothyroid cases. Mean FT4 level was significantly lower and mean TSH level was significantly higher in hypothyroid thalassemic patients (p= <0.001). Significant positive correlation between serum ferritin level and serum TSH level was found. Higher serum ferritin level was found significantly associated with the development of hypothyroidism in thalassemic patients.

Children with severe to profound hearing disability got a drastic change in their lives by embracing cochlear implant. This study is done to compare the outcome of cochlear implant in listening using Category of Auditory Performance (CAP) and in speech development using Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) score among under 6 year pre-lingual deaf children who underwent cochlear implantation. This cross-sectional study was carried out at the Armed Forces Medical Institute, National Institute of ENT and ENT outpatient department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from October 2021 to September 2022. Total 384 pre-lingual deaf children with cochlear implant below 6 years of age were the study population of this study. The speech perception skill children with implants did not significantly differ between those under three years old and those over three. Impediment to cochlear implantation in Bangladeshi perspective was also analyzed.

Thalassemia is one of the most common haemoglobinopathies in the world. Transfusion dependent thalassemia patients need regular blood transfusion. Repeated blood transfusions lead to iron overloads which can affect various organs in the body including eyes. The present study aims to evaluate the ocular involvements in transfusion dependent thalassemia children and their relationship with duration of the disease and serum ferritin level. This cross-sectional observational study included 46 multi-transfused thalassemia children aged 3-18 years. Detailed ophthalmological examination including visual acuity, slit lamp bio microscopy, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy was done. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version (IBM) 23.0. Student's t-test and chi-square (χ²) test was done and p value of <0.05 was considered significant. Out of 46 thalassemia children male were 25(54.3%) and female were 21(45.7%). Mean age of the children was 8.94±5.04 years, mean duration of disease was 7.02±3.5 years and mean serum ferritin level 1543.68±914.43ng/dl. Ocular involvements were detected in 19(41.3%) children. Among them 8(17.39%) children had more than one ocular involvements. The ocular manifestations were decreased visual acuity in 17(36.95%), corneal dryness in 7(15.21%), lens opacity in 6(13.04%), optic disc atrophy in 7(15.21%), peripheral retinal pigmentation in 5(10.86%) and retinal vessels tortuosity in 3(6.52%) children. Higher serum ferritin level and increased duration of the disease were significantly (p<0.001) related with ocular involvement. Various ocular involvements were found in transfusion dependent thalassemia children. Therefore, transfusion dependent thalassemia children should be screened periodically for early detection and proper management of ocular changes.

Nephrotic syndrome is the most common glomerular disease affecting children. Hypothyroidism is one of the most important complications which occur due to urinary loss of protein bound thyroid hormones, such as thyroxin binding globulin, transthyretin and albumin. This cross sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pediatric, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Bangladesh from February 2018 to October 2019. This study was carried out to find out the thyroid profile in children with nephrotic syndrome and compared with thyroid profile of other acute illness in children. Total 122 children aged 2-12 years, further subdivided into Group A (n=61) suffering from nephrotic syndrome (1st attack, infrequent relapse) and Group B (n=61) other disease like viral fever, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, diarrhoea, UTI. Demographic details of patients and their relevant clinical details were obtained by an interviewer administered questionnaire. Blood for free T4, TSH were taken and compared between both groups. The mean FT4 values in Group A and Group B were 16.09±22.32fmol/ml and 68.22±11.65fmol/ml respectively, whereas the TSH level was significantly higher in Group A than controls (5.42±1.04 vs. 3.53±1.44). The T4 levels in nephrotic syndrome (Group A) patients were low. Analysis was done by using SPSS 22.0 version for windows software. Continuous and catagorical parameters were compared by unpaired 't' test and Chi-Square test. A p-value of 0.05 was considered significant. Hypothyroidism was found more in younger children i.e. age less than 6 years. This study concluded that children with nephrotic syndrome have a state of hypothyroidism.
